Breeding success of Cape petrels at Nelson Island (South Shetland Islands) in 1991/1992 averaged 29%. Predation by skuas accounted for 76% of all nesting failures. Direct attacks prevailed over opportunistic predation. Intensity of observer disturbance alone could not account for the inter-colony variation in predation rate, which tended to increase with colony size, presence of nearby breeding skuas and local availability of other prey species (penguins). Predation was significantly lower on nests that could be attacked only, or more easily, from the air and nests with close neighbours. Selective predation on nests in which relatively narrower eggs were laid was independent of nest-site characteristics and laying date, suggesting an effect of parental age/experience on breeding success through antipredator behaviour. Development of oil-spitting behaviour in growing chicks balanced the parental attendance and effort in nest defence, which declined as chick age increased. Increased predation on lighter but not smaller chicks may reflect the lower ability of such chicks to defend themselves by spitting stomach oil. Seasonal variations of predation rate on Cape petrel nests did not result from predator swamping by numbers of simultaneously active nests, but rather reflected temporal availability of alternative prey. Eggs of the Cape petrel Daption capense at Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, exhibited high variability in volume between females (up to 48%), while for each individual female, both volume and shape of eggs were highly correlated over two seasons. Both female size and body-condition at laying were unrelated to egg-volume in the 'good'season 1991, but larger females produced larger eggs in the 'bad'season 1990, when eggs were smaller on average. In 1991, females in better body-condition, but not larger, started laying earlier. In spite of synchronized laying (75% of eggs laid within five days), egg-volume decreased with laying date. Egg-volume differed significantly between the two years, which could not be explained by changes in the breeding population or timing of breeding. The laying of relatively small eggs and low overall breeding success in 1990 most probably reflected changes in food availability. Overall hatchability was 88% and did not differ significantly between disturbed and control colonies in 1991. Larger and more rounded eggs showed better hatching success, but hatchability was related more to egg-volume whereas hatching rate was related more to egg-shape. As the majority of egg losses were attributable to predation, the hatching rate was influenced by parental performance relatively more than by hatchability. Hence the relationship between hatching rate and egg-shape probably reflects improvement in hatching success with female age/experience, whereas the relationship between egg-size and hatchability suggests effect of egg-size independently of parental traits.  相似文献

CapsuleFood independently affects both laying date and clutch size, suggesting that seasonal decline in clutch size is related to a decrease in food availability.

Aim To test the effect of food abundance on laying date and clutch size of the White Stork and identify the cause of seasonal decline in the number of eggs laid.

Methods During 1991 and 1996 we recorded clutch size and laying date of pairs breeding next to rubbish dumps (food abundant and constant throughout the breeding season) and birds breeding far from rubbish dumps (using natural food sources).

Results In 1991 there was no difference in mean laying date between pairs nesting at rubbish dumps and control pairs. Clutch size was significantly larger at rubbish dump nests. In contrast, mean laying date was earlier in control pairs in 1996 and there was no significant differences in clutch sizes, even when controlling for laying date effect.

Conclusion The results support the hypothesis that food availability independently affects both laying date and clutch size. The seasonal decline in clutch size close to rubbish dumps was negligible (1991) or much smaller than in the control zone (1996) suggesting that a progressive deterioration of natural food sources is the most probable reason for a decline in clutch size as the season advances.  相似文献

Mass changes in female southern elephant seals, sampled sequentially at different points through their annual cycle, were measured at King George Island, South Shetland Islands, during the 1995/1996 and 1996/1997 field seasons. Females weighed after they had given birth showed an increase of 37 ± 36 kg (mean ± SD), which represented 6.2 ± 6.4% in relation to their mass in the first breeding season. During the first aquatic phase, between the end of lactation and the beginning of moult, females gained a mean of 128 ± 35 kg, (n = 18) (2.19 ± 0.65 kg day−1), which represented between 27 and 83% of the mass they had lost during lactation. Nine females followed during moulting showed a mass loss rate of 5.0 ± 0.4 kg day−1, which was half the rate during lactation. Total mass loss during moulting (129 ± 22 kg) was not significantly different from mass gain for the same females between lactation and moult (135 ± 37 kg). Furthermore, at the end of moulting, female mass was not significantly different from the mass at the end of lactation. These masses represented 65 ± 5% and 64 ± 5%, respectively, of their initial mass after parturition. During the second period at sea, from the end of the moult until females hauled out to give birth in the following breeding season, the estimated mass gain was 1.45 ± 0.24 kg day−1 (n = 5), which was not significantly different to the rate of mass gain shown by the same females during the first period at sea (2.26 ± 0.70 kg day−1). Total mass gain during the second aquatic phase (364 ± 63 kg) was not correlated with the mass at the end of moulting, but it was positively related to the mass loss experienced by females from parturition until the end of the moulting period in the first breeding season. Laying dates for a population of individually marked Greater Kestrels Falco rupicoloides, on grass- and croplands near Pretoria, South Africa, were determined for 89 nesting attempts during 1975–1988. Laying occurred in the austral spring between 23 July and 11 November. Timing of laying was negatively correlated with rainfall of the previous summer and positively correlated with rainfall of the winter and spring preceding laying. Success in fledging young was significantly higher for clutches laid before the median laying date of 1 September and for clutches laid after seasons of above average rainfall.  相似文献

The seasonal variation in the foraging behaviour of king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) was studied at Heard Island (53°05′S, 73°30′E) during 1992/1993. On seven occasions throughout the breeding cycle, time-depth-light recorders were deployed on breeding adults to record the dive activities and foraging. Foraging locations changed with season: in autumn and spring 1992, adults foraged between 48–52°S and 74–78°E, about 370 km NNE of Heard Island close to the Polar Front. Two penguins tracked in winter travelled 2220 km east of Heard Island (95°E) along the northern ice limit, and 1220 km south of Heard Island to approximately 65°S, respectively. In spring (October), the penguins again foraged further north than during winter. The foraging area utilised in October overlapped the area where the penguins foraged in March/April. The penguins' diving behaviour also varied seasonally: the modal depth of deep dives (>50 m) increased from about 100 m in February to 220 m in October. Mean dive depths increased from 70 ± 52 m in March 1992 to 160 ± 68 m in August 1992. Penguins dived deep (>50 m) only during daylight hours (16 h in February, 9 h in July). Mean dive durations ranged from 2.9 ± 1.1 min in March 1992 to 5.1 ± 1.2 min in August 1992. Associated with changes in foraging location and dive behaviour was a change in diet composition: during summer the penguins ingested mainly myctophid fish (>90%) while in winter the most important diet item was squid. Deuterium-labeled water was used to measure changes in the proximate body composition during the lactation period and after weaning in southern elephant seal pups at King George Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. During the lactation period (23.0 ± 1.4 days) pups gained a mean of 4.9 ± 0.5 kg/day (n=7). Of the total mass gain (112 ± 8 kg), 38% was water, 48% was fat, and 11% was protein. This represented an increase in total body gross energy of 2437 ± 145 MJ. The proportion of body mass represented by fat was less than 2% at birth, increasing to 35 ± 2% at weaning. We followed the pups during a mean period of 36 ± 3 days after weaning. During this period, pups had a mean loss of 1.21 ± 0.10 kg/day (n=7) comprising 39% water, 48% fat, and 12% protein. Phenological studies have demonstrated changes in the timing of seasonal events across multiple taxonomic groups as the climate warms. Some northern European migrant bird populations, however, show little or no significant change in breeding phenology, resulting in synchrony with key food sources becoming mismatched. This phenological inertia has often been ascribed to migration constraints (i.e. arrival date at breeding grounds preventing earlier laying). This has been based primarily on research in The Netherlands and Germany where time between arrival and breeding is short (often as few as 9 days). Here, we test the arrival constraint hypothesis over a 15-year period for a U.K. pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) population where laying date is not constrained by arrival as the period between arrival and breeding is substantial and consistent (average 27 ± 4.57 days SD). Despite increasing spring temperatures and quantifiably stronger selection for early laying on the basis of number of offspring to fledge, we found no significant change in breeding phenology, in contrast with co-occurring resident blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus). We discuss possible non-migratory constraints on phenological adjustment, including limitations on plasticity, genetic constraints and competition, as well as the possibility of counter-selection pressures relating to adult survival, longevity or future reproductive success. Mass transfer from mother to pup during the lactation period, and mass recovery for the same females during the foraging period were measured in the southern elephant seal at King George Island, Antarctica. During the 19.2 ± 0.9-day lactation period measured (which represented 87% of the entire nursing), females lost a mean mass of 10.56 ± 1.76 kg/day (n = 27), while their pups gained a mean mass of 5.27 ± 1.1 kg/day. There was a correlation between daily body weight gain in pups and daily weight loss by their mothers. Pup weaning mass was positively related to maternal post-partum mass. Serial samples showed that weight losses by females and gains by their pups were not linear over lactation, but showed lower values at the beginning and at the end of lactation. During the 60.5 ± 6.2-day foraging phase between the end of lactation and molt, females gained 2.21 ± 0.65 kg/day (n = 12), or 54% of the mass lost during nursing. Growth rates reported here are higher than those reported in other breeding sites. However, the ratio of body mass loss by females to gain by their pups was similar, suggesting that higher growth rates and greater weaning mass at South Shetland are due to a higher mean weight of females on arrival at this breeding site. The foraging period was shorter and the mass gained greater than those measured at South Georgia; this could be related to relatively shorter distances to foraging areas. We made intensive observations of 50 pairs of Lesser Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos minor in southern Sweden from 1989 to 1992. Between 7% and 22% of the pairs each year defended a territory but laid no eggs. Overall, 76% of the pairs laying eggs raised fledglings, but this proportion was only 33% in 1991 when the weather was cold and wet. The mean clutch size (5.9) and brood size (4.5) in successful nests did not vary significantly between years. Incubation time was 1 day longer in 1991 (11–12 days) than in 1990 and 1992 (10–11 days). Number of young fledged per nesting attempt (3.5) and per pair (2.7) in the population also varied significantly between years. The initiation of egg laying varied between years but coincided each year remarkably well with the date when oak came into leaf. Breeding success is discussed, and comparisons are made with other hole-nesting species.  相似文献

Thousands of penguins are banded annually world-wide, even though little is known about the potential impact of these flipper bands. In this paper, the possible effect of banding on the survivorship, breeding frequency and other ecological factors on king penguins was investigated. The extended laying period (3–4 months) of the king penguin allows the observation of non-lethal effects that could influence the time of laying and thus the reproductive success. Three hundred and eighty-three breeding king penguins on the colony of “la Baie du Marin” on Possession Island, Crozet Archipelago were either single- or double-flipper banded. The results show that the returning birds were laying late the following breeding season, and that double-banded birds lay significantly later than single-banded birds. Furthermore, our data suggest a lower return rate for double-banded birds than for single-banded birds (45% as opposed to 76%). The low return rate of single-banded birds, when compared to an interannual survivorship estimated to be 96.5%, also raises questions concerning the potential impact of single banding. The diet of non-breeding male Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) was investigated at Harmony Point, Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands, by the analysis of 18 and 33 scats collected during February 1996 and 1997 respectively. Overall, fish were the most frequent prey (74.5%) and predominated by mass (54.4%), whereas krill predominated by number (94.2%). This coincides well with the pattern observed in 1997, but in 1996 krill was the most important prey by number and mass (50.2%). The importance of the remaining taxa represented in the samples (octopods, hyperiids and bivalves) was negligible. Among fish, myctophids represented 85.2% of the fish mass, with Gymnoscopelus nicholsi and Electrona antarctica being the main prey. These two species predominated in 1997, whereas the channichthyid Cryodraco antarcticus and the nototheniid Gobionotothen gibberifrons were dominant in 1996. The migratory capacity of metamorphs and their later integration into local breeding populations was studied in a Bufo calamita metapopulation inhabiting the northern Rhineland, Germany (1991–1994). A new tagging method allowed unequivocal distinction among metamorphs (n = 1,709), which originated either from the spring-breeding cohort in 1991 and 1992 or from the summer-breeding cohort in 1991. The life history of batch-marked individuals was followed until adulthood, focusing on postmetamorphic dispersal, choice of breeding locality and timing of adult reproduction. Almost all metamorphs left the patches used for breeding within a few weeks after emergence. They were found at about the same density in all favourable microhabitats in a radius of up to 2 km around their native patch. This demonstrates that even small toadlets (6–11 mm snout-to-vent length) migrate distances of several hundred metres within a short time and that they significantly help prevent local extinction in sink populations (rescue effect). Recaptures of reproductive adults originating from tagged metamorphs were limited to males belonging to the 1997 spring and summer cohorts. The absence of recaptured females was probably due to their greater vagility and later sexual maturation. First-breeding males (2 years old) without exception joined the breeding cohort from which they originated: early breeders originated from spawn of the spring cohort, mid-summer breeders from spawn of the summer cohort. This result is in accordance with the hypothesis that the integration of first breeders to a specific breeding cohort is genetically controlled in central European natterjacks. The exchange of individuals between different cohorts in the same patch is considerably less than the migratory exchange between the same breeding cohorts among local populations, as predicted from the allozyme data. The breeding biology of the gentoo penguin, Pygoscelis papua , was studied over a three-year period (1986–1988) at Bird Island, South Georgia, with particular reference to birds of known age or breeding experience. Laying date varied significantly between all three years, being three weeks later in 1987, when the breeding population decreased markedly. Factors involved in the timing of breeding are discussed. Within years egg-laying was highly synchronous: 95% of clutches were initiated in 14·5 days or less. The incubation period was 35 days and the laying interval, between the two eggs, 3·3–3·4 days. Chicks creched when 25–30 days old, and this varied between years, possibly related to food supply and chick growth. Chicks left the colony for the first time between 75 and 85 days of age. The breeding population at Bird Island decreased by 20% and increased by 84% in successive years during the study period. Breeding success (chicks fledged per egg laid) varied between 0·33 and 0·65 within colonies, but for the whole island was very consistent over the three years: 0·45, 0·51 and 0·47. Overall, colony differences were not correlated between years. Disturbance from Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella , is suggested as the cause of consistently lower breeding success at one colony. Mean egg weight varied annually, and with age of the breeding bird, nest location and, in one year, with laying date. Young, first-time breeders laid smaller eggs and had lower breeding success compared to older, experienced birds, similar to other seabirds. However, they differed from other species in laying on average earlier than older birds. The relationship between age, egg weight, laying date and breeding success is discussed in relation to predation and seasonal food supply.  相似文献

We investigated the diet and aspects of foraging effort among Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) breeding at three colonies on Ross Island, in the southwestern Ross Sea – Capes Royds, Bird and Crozier – during the chick-provisioning period of three austral summers, 1994–1995, 1995–1996 and 1996–1997. During the study period, pack-ice cover differed in waters offshore of these colonies, by colony, seasons and year. Diet differed among colonies only slightly. The fish Pleuragramma antarcticum was the most important prey, especially during years or periods within years when little pack ice was present. With respect to krill, which composed the remainder of diet, juvenile Euphausia crystallorophias were consumed predominantly in a year of heavy pack-ice cover; more adult krill were consumed in 2 years when pack ice was sparse. Foraging trip duration differed by colony, season and year and was related directly to distance from the colony to the nearest pack ice. The amount of food brought to chicks increased as trip duration increased, to a point (2 days), but then decreased as duration increased further (up to 4 days). On the basis of data on mass of parents and of meal sizes to chicks, it appeared that on the longest trips more of the food gathered by parents was used for self maintenance; on the longest trips, parents lost body mass. Successful foraging during chick rearing, the period when adult foraging is most intense, appears to depend on the proximity of pack ice to nesting colonies for this penguin species. The movements of gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) in Antarctica were studied by equipping a total of 37 birds captured at Ardley Island, South Shetlands between December 1991 and May 1996 with position-determining devices. Information on area usage was derived from 20 of these devices and covered the incubation period (N = 3 birds), the chick-rearing period (N = 14 birds) and the over-wintering period (N = 3 birds). During incubation birds only ventured further than 50 km from the colony 20% of the time and no individual ranged further than 200 km from the colony. In contrast, no individuals attending chicks ranged further than 16 km from the colony. During winter the maximum distance ranged from the colony was 268 km. Mean distances between the birds and the colony were 80, 81 and 127 km. Individual birds tended to associate with one spot, making short (10 day) forays away before returning to nodal areas. The ranging capacity of gentoo penguins appears considerably less than that of sympatric congeners and may reflect the ability of gentoo penguins to dive deeper and thus exploit prey not accessible to congeners. Observed phenological changes can be explained either by individual phenotypic plasticity or by evolutionary changes, but there is more evidence pointing towards phenotypic plasticity to explain the mechanism behind changes in bird phenology. However, most studies on phenology have been conducted on insectivorous bird species for which breeding is closely tied to temperature and insect emergence. In this study, we examined the consequences of climatic conditions on the nesting phenology of temperate breeding Canada Geese Branta canadensis maxima, which rely on a continuous food supply, during a 14‐year period (2003–16). We determined whether laying dates were plastically adjusted to spring environmental conditions, and whether this adjustment resulted in a laying date advancement. We further estimated the strength and shape of selection acting on breeding timing, by looking at the effect of laying date on the relative number of young successfully hatched in a nest. We found that Geese plastically adjusted their laying date to spring maximum temperature (and not to precipitation or ice break‐up), resulting in a 9‐day advancement of laying date in the population for that period. Laying date was also moderately repeatable (r = 0.23) and subject to directional selection, but stabilizing selection was negligible. We thus demonstrate how Canada Geese plastically adjust laying dates to temperature, which may further be beneficial to nesting success. Evolutionary change of laying date to selection related to climate change, however, is still possible.  相似文献

Port Lockroy, situated on the Antarctic Peninsula, is one of the most visited tourist sites in Antarctica. The effects of visitor disturbance on the breeding performance of gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) at Goudier Island, Port Lockroy was investigated during the austral summer of 1996/1997 by comparing pairs in treatment areas (visited by 35–55 tourists every 1–2 days) and control colonies (not visited by tourists). There were no differences between the two groups in the proportion of birds that laid, in hatching success or the proportion of single-chick broods. Pairs in treatment colonies laid a higher proportion of single-egg clutches, but this was related to colony location and unusually high snow accumulation. Most treatment colonies were situated on low-lying ground or in the lee of buildings, and probably had more late layers at the initial census. Only 11% of tourist visits had occurred by laying, making human disturbance an unlikely explanation for the higher proportion of single-egg clutches. Nests monitored in a disturbed colony and a control colony showed no differences in chick mass or survival up to 20 days of age. The overall breeding success, based on counts of creched birds, was similar to other southern populations of gentoo penguins, after correcting for mortality between creching and fledging. Historical data from Goudier Island indicate that the colony established itself in 1985 and has rapidly increased in size since then. The neighbouring colony at Alice Creek, which has been regularly visited by tourists for at least a decade, has also shown a population increase, although this expansion has been at a slower rate. We conclude that disturbance from tourist visits is unlikely to have been a major determinant of gentoo population change at Port Lockroy. Accepted: 8 November 1998  相似文献

This paper examines how flooded river valley conditions affect reproductive success of Hooded Crows Corvus cornix nesting in the biotope considered as primary for this species. The main goals of the present study were to determine the nesting period that most influences the breeding output and to investigate the factors influencing reproductive efficiency of the studied population. Mean survival rate of the whole nesting period (53 days––from egg laying to fledgling) was 0.371 (95% CL: 0.338–0.403), while mean survival for the incubation period (to day 21) was 0.850 (0.827–0.875) and mean survival rate for the nestling period was 0.499 (0.460–0.538). The study has shown that the most critical period in the breeding cycle is the first half of the nestling stage, especially from hatching to day 5. Furthermore, the study demonstrated how water conditions affect reproduction in untypical wetland species. Similarly to many other waterbirds, in the studied population of the Hooded Crow, water level positively influences its reproduction.  相似文献
