Benthic algal biomass and productivity in high subarctic streams,Alaska   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
Year-round measurements of the standing crop of epilithic algae (as chlorophyll a concentration) in two streams — one second and one fourth order (map scale 1:63 360) — in interior Alaska (64°–65° N) were only about one tenth that reported from streams of temperate North America. Cell densities in these streams, however, were similar to those in comparable temperate streams. Year-round domination of the benthic flora by very tiny diatoms (Achnanthes spp.) may explain the apparent disparity between low chlorophyll a content and nearly average cell densities. Chlorophyll a standing crop in a more alkaline groundwater-fed stream, however, was higher and within the range of similarly sized temperate streams. Maximum chlorophyll a standing crop varied positively with alkalinity in 5 clear-water streams where standing crop was measured on natural or artificial substrates. Seasonal mean concentrations of sestonic chlorophyll a (used as estimates of benthic algal chlorophyll a standing crop) varied directly and significantly with alkalinity among ten clear-water streams; and, with total phosphorus among 8 of 10 clear-water and 5 brown-water streams studied. During the summer, when there is little darkness, gross primary productivity (as estimated by the diurnal dissolved-oxygen method) was similar to that of northern temperate streams. 利用Ludox-QPS方法并结合沉积环境因子的综合分析,研究了2011年4月采自长江口及东海10个站位以底栖硅藻、纤毛虫和异养小鞭毛虫为代表的微型底栖生物及小型底栖生物的组成、丰度和生物量、分布及生态特点。结果表明,底栖硅藻的丰度 (5.92 ? 104 ind/10 cm2) 和生物量 (83.29 ?g C/10 cm2) 远高于纤毛虫 (丰度为1036 ind/10 cm2,生物量为3.33 ?g C/10 cm2)、异养小鞭毛虫 (丰度为4451 ind/10 cm2,生物量为2.51 ?g C/10 cm2) 和小型底栖生物 (丰度为1947 ? 849 ind/10 cm2,生物量为49.01? 22.05 ?g C/10 cm2)。在鉴定出的11个小型底栖生物类群中,线虫占小型底栖生物总丰度的90%和总生物量的37%。底栖硅藻生物量在长江口及东海海域呈由近岸向外海逐渐降低的分布特点,而底栖纤毛虫、异养小鞭毛虫及小型底栖生物的分布则正相反。在垂直分布上,76%的硅藻和80%的线虫分布在0–2 cm沉积物表层,仅1%的硅藻和6%的线虫分布在5–8 cm分层。统计分析表明,底栖硅藻的现存量与沉积物中叶绿素a含量呈极显著的正相关,与底层水温度呈弱的正相关;该海域底栖原生动物和小型底栖生物的分布受多个因子而非单一环境因子的共同作用。对比分析表明,长江口及东海单位体积沉积物中的硅藻丰度较水体中的硅藻丰度高2个数量级,沉积物中相当部分的叶绿素a含量可能系底栖硅藻所贡献;表层8 cm沉积物中纤毛虫的丰度约是上层30 m水柱中纤毛虫丰度的30倍,生物量约是后者的40倍。尽管纤毛虫在生物量上远小于小型底栖生物,但其估算的生产力约是后者的3倍;而异养小鞭毛虫由于个体更小,其周转率可能较纤毛虫更高。长江口及东海陆架区原生动物和小型底栖生物的高现存量及生产力预示着其在该海域生态系统中的重要作用。  相似文献

SUMMARY. Phytoplankton surveys of Cayuga Lake over the past 60 years indicate that summer algal crops have doubled and spring algal crops have increased 20-fold. The pattern of algal seasonal succession has changed from a summer maximum comprised of a mixture of diatoms, greens and blue-greens to a spring maximum comprised of diatoms followed by diminished summer levels with dominance by greens and blue-greens. Summer algal standing crop and the shift to a spring pulse are shown to be related phenomena resulting from the pattern of phosphorus loading to the lake. The combination of data on algal biomass, chlorophyll and Secchi disc transparency serve to describe the long-term trend in the lake's trophic state and demonstrate a large increase in algal standing crop in the period roughly coincidental with the advent of phosphorus-based detergents. The increase in algal standing crop from pre-1940 levels to present levels closely corresponds with that predicted by the Oglesby—Schaffner regression model from the increase in phosphorus loading due to phosphorus-based detergents.  相似文献

Periphyton samples were collected at 15 sites in the Middle Fork of the Salmon River drainage basin, Idaho, USA to test certain principles of the River Continuum Concept (RCC) and to characterize the diatom communities. The standing crop of chlorophyll a increased from 2nd to 4th order streams, peaked in the 5th order stream, and declined in higher orders. These data support the RCC predictions except that peak values were reached somewhat earlier, in terms of stream order, because of the lack of shading in these streams. Also, downstream decreases were not completely attributable to increasing turbidity and decreasing benthic productivity, and may be partially related to discharge. The number of scraping invertebrates was positively correlated with the standing crop og periphyton (AFDM, not chlorophyll a); this, too, supports the predictions of the RCC. One hundred forty-five species of diatoms were identified and the system is characterized by an Achnanthes minutissima – Fragilaria pinnata - Navicula seminulum – Cocconeis placentula community.  相似文献

Seasonal nutrient enrichment experiments (short-term bioassays) were conducted in three Florida lakes of different trophic states to determine the effects of addition of various nutrient combinations upon chlorophyll a and phytoplankton standing crops. Nutrient enriched surface water samples with crustacean zooplankton removed were incubated in situ in clear polyethylene bags for 3 to 6 days. The 25 factorial design employed two levels (ambient and enriched) of each of five nutrients [NH4 +, PO inf4 sup3− , Fe -EDTA, SiO inf3 sup2− and a cation (Ca2+ or K+) or trace elements]. Ammonium produced significant increases in chlorophyll a and phytoplankton standing crops in all experiments. Phosphate produced similar results in the mesotrophic lake, but the eutrophic lakes had both positive and nonsignificant responses which varied seasonally between lakes. Iron increased chlorophyll a in most experiments but affected total phytoplankton standing crop only during the summer and fall. Silicon had negative effects in some experiments. Cations and trace elements produced marked differences between lakes for chlorophyll a, but total phytoplankton standing crop showed few significant responses. Synergistic responses to two- and three-factor interactions were observed in all lakes. Differences in the responses of phytoplankton taxonomic divisions to enrichment may be responsible for much of the between lake variation in chlorophyll a and total phytoplankton volume responses. Nutrient limitations in these lakes are discussed and related to limnological factors and predictive models.  相似文献

Methods of estimating the standing crops of epipsammic diatoms have been evaluated and compared with those used for epipelic algal crops.

Good correlations between chlorophyll a content and cell counts were obtained for epipelic populations, but because of the presence of large numbers of decaying cells, inseparable from living cells, such correlation was not obtained with epipsammic algae, even after correction of the pigment estimates for the presence of pheophytin a. The standing crop of epipsammic algae was at all times greater than that of epipelic algae at the same sampling station, and this was attributed to the differential effects of sediment disturbance by burrowing animals and water movements.  相似文献

In 1981, experiments to study the toxicity of copper in its ionic, complexed (to humic acid) and adsorbed (on cellulose fibers from a local paper mill) forms on species composition, standing crop, and photosynthesis of phytoplankton were conducted in chemostats with natural aggregations composed mainly of either green algae or of diatoms from the Saguenay River. In the aggregations of green algae, the rates of primary production were more strongly inhibited by copper than were the chlorophyll a concentrations, whereas the cell numbers, standing crop and rates of primary production of the diatoms were all strongly inhibited by copper.  相似文献

The photosynthetic activities of benthic diatoms in response to temperature changes were assessed by measuring chlorophyll fluorescence kinetics. Small benthic diatom species with large surface area to volume (SA/V) ratios responded to increasing temperature differently from large diatoms, since larger ratios caused lower photosynthetic activity under high-temperature conditions. The small SA/V ratios of large cells may be advantageous in benthic environments under adverse conditions such as high temperature and/or strong light. A size-dependent differential response of benthic diatoms to changes in environmental factors such as temperature may result in an altered distribution of the different diatom communities.  相似文献

A mesocosm facility is being developed by the CSIRO Division of Fisheries to study the movement, fate and impact of pollutants in coastal marine environments. Initially, we are studying coastal habitats in S.W Australia that are subject to wave action. A 12 week experiment assessed changes in biotic and abiotic components of sediment brought from the field into mesocosms. In these sediments, benthic microalgae are the major primary producers. Microalgal standing stocks were measured as the concentration of chlorophyll a and phaeopigments in the top 2 cm of sediment, and these measures were compared among mesocosms and field sites. Significant increases in chlorophyll a and phaeopigments, increased numbers of species and a shift from episammic to periphytic diatoms were observed, possibly caused by decreased water motion in mesocosms or other containment effects. Results from statistical power analyses suggested that our sampling was sufficiently well replicated and successfully incorporated variation at small spatial and temporal scales. Sampling effort used in this experiment should form the basis for future work with benthic microalgae.  相似文献

Plankton and benthic invertebrate populations were examined along a 160 km section of the St. Lawrence River between Lake Ontario and Waddington, New York during a period of ice cover. Algal biomass was low in winter with diatoms and cryptomonads the most prominent forms. Zooplankton biomass was about one-tenth the algal standing crop and cyclopoid copepods predominated. Phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass declined downriver providing evidence that most plankton was imported from Lake Ontario. Benthic invertebrate standing crop was greatest near Lake Ontario where molluscs were abundant. The downriver macroinvertebrate community shifted to coarse particle feeders, namely annelids and chironomids. Beds of accumulated detrital material derived primarily from dieback of macrophytes were particularly rich in benthic invertebrates.  相似文献

Exposure to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) may alter the structure and function of freshwater ecosystems. However, there remains a paucity of studies investigating the effects of AgNP exposure on freshwater communities in the natural environment where interactions with the ambient environment may modify AgNP toxicity. We used nutrient diffusing substrates to determine the interactive effects of AgNP exposure and phosphorus (P) enrichment on natural assemblages of periphyton in three Canadian Shield lakes. The lakes were all phosphorus poor and spanned a gradient of dissolved organic carbon availability. Ag slowly accumulated in the exposed periphyton, which decreased periphyton carbon and chlorophyll a content and increased periphyton C:P and N:P in the carbon rich lakes. We found significant interactions between AgNP and P treatments on periphyton carbon, autotroph standing crop and periphyton stoichiometry in the carbon poor lake such that P enhanced the negative effects of AgNPs on chlorophyll a and lessened the impact of AgNP exposure on periphyton stoichiometry. Our results contrast with those of other studies demonstrating that P addition decreases metal toxicity for phytoplankton, suggesting that benthic and pelagic primary producers may react differently to AgNP exposure and highlighting the importance of in situ assays when assessing potential effects of AgNPs in fresh waters.  相似文献

Limnological characteristics of six subtropical lakes were monitored to determine the factors which regulate chlorophyll α concentrations and phytoplankton standing crops. Most physical chemical variables showed non-significant differences with depth but differences between lakes often were large. Phytoplankton blooms occurred throughout the year and there were marked differences between the hypereutrophic and mesotrophic lakes in chlorophyll α concentrations, standing stocks, and dominant species. Densities of total zooplankton and rotifers in the hypereutrophic lakes were 3- to 6-fold greater than in the mesotrophic lakes. Regression models for chlorophyll α and total phytoplankton cell volume were calculated for each lake and for all lakes combined, but R2 values and numbers of shared variables tended to be low indicating the need for additional variables and more frequent sampling.  相似文献

Primary production of phytoplankton and standing crops of zooplankton and zoobenthos were intensively surveyed in Lake Teganuma during May 1983–April 1984. The annual mean chlorophyll a concentrations were as high as 304 µg · l–1–383 µg · l–1. The daily gross primary production of phytoplankton was high throughout the year. The peak production rate was recorded in August and September, when blue-green algae bloomed. The annual gross primary production was estimated as 1450 g C · m–2 · y–1, extremely high as compared with other temperate eutrophic lakes. Zooplankton was predominantly composed of rotifers. The annual mean standing crop of zooplankton was 0.182 g C · m–2 around the middle between the inlets and the outlet and was lower than in most other temperate eutrophic lakes. Zoobenthos was mostly composed of Oligochaeta and chironomids. The annual mean standing crop of zoobenthos ranged from 0.052 g C · m–2 to 0.265 g C · m–2, the lowest values among temperate eutrophic lakes, which is in contrast to the high primary production.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in standing crop of coarse, benthic detritus at five locations across a second-order stream were studied between May 1971 and May 1972. Standing crop near the banks varied seasonally with highest quantities in the autumn and winter, whereas near midstream seasonal changes in standing crop were negligible. Mean annual standing crop was 747 g/m2 (ash-free dry weight) near the banks and 225 g/m2 (AFDW) at midstream. Deposition experiments showed that standing crops of detritus came to equilibrium in 2–3 days at midstream and in about one week near the banks. Nitrogen content of coarse detritus, which ranged between 0.65 and 3.51% (AFDW), did not vary seasonally but was significantly greater near the banks than at midstream.  相似文献

The mid-summer phytoplankton communities of more than 100 Adirondack lakes ranging in pH from 4.0 to 7.2 were characterized in relation to 25 physical-chemical parameters. Phytoplankton species richness declined significantly with increasing acidity. Acidic lakes (pH < 5.0) averaged fewer than 20 species while more circumneutral waters (pH > 6.5) averaged more than 33 species. Phytoplankton abundance was not significantly correlated with any of the measured physical-chemical parameters, but standing crop parameters, i.e., chlorophyll a and phytoplankton biovolume, did correlate significantly with several parameters. Midsummer standing crop correlated best with total phosphorus concentration but acidity status affected the standing crop-phosphorus relationship. Circumneutral waters of low phosphorus content, i.e. < 10 µg·1–1 TP, averaged 3.62 µg·1–1 chlorophyll a whereas acidic lakes of the same phosphorus content averaged only 1.96 µg·1–1 chlorophyll a. The midsummer chlorophyll content of lakes of high phosphorus content, i.e. > 10 µg·1–1 TP, was not significantly affected by acidity status.Adirondack phytoplankton community composition changes with increasing acidity. The numbers of species in midsummer collections within all major taxonomic groups of algae are reduced with increasing acidity. The midsummer phytoplankton communities of acidic Adirondack lakes can generally be characterized into four broad types; 1) the depauperate clear water acid lake assemblage dominated by dinoflagellates, 2) the more diverse oligotrophic acid lake community dominated by cryptomonads, green algae, and chrysophytes, 3) the productive acid lake assemblage dominated by green algae, and 4) the chrysophyte dominated community. The major phytoplankton community types of acid lakes are associated with different levels of nutrients, aluminum concentrations, and humic influences.  相似文献

The physical and chemical variabilities as well as the distribution of diatoms of six boreal lakes in the Laurentian Mountains (southern Québec, Canada) were studied. The lakes are located along an altitudinal gradient and were sampled at a biweekly resolution from May through October, 2002. In general, we found later onset and weaker lake stratification under colder climates. Lake circulation and SiO2 are strongly correlated and together significantly explain the distribution of diatoms of the individual lakes. Diatoms that accumulated in the sediment traps were mostly composed of benthic species, suggesting resuspension. However, diatom flux and lake circulation were not significantly correlated, the diatom assemblages in the sediment traps were similar in two consecutive years, and species–environment relationships were comparable among lakes, which indicates that the effects of resuspension were minimal. In addition, we found that one lake was more productive due to forest logging. The forest in the catchment of Lake Maxi was entirely clear-cut shortly prior to our sampling. Mean total phosphorus, dissolved organic carbon, and chlorophyll a concentrations were significantly higher when compared to the other five study lakes. This study seeks to improve our understanding of how diatoms in boreal lakes respond to climate change and forest clear-cut.  相似文献

Potential effects of extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields on periphyton were studied from 1983 to 1993 using a Before, After, Control and Impact design. The study was conducted at two sites on the Ford River, a fourth-order brown water trout stream in Dickinson County, Michigan. The Reference site received 4.9–6.5 times less exposure to ground electric fields and from 300 to 334 times less exposure to magnetic flux from 1989 to 1993 when the antenna was operational at 76 Hz than did the Antenna site. The objective of the study was to determine if ELF electromagnetic fields had caused changes in structure and/or function of algal communities in the Ford River. Significant differences in chlorophyll a standing crop and daily accumulation rate (a surrogate for primary productivity), and organic matter standing crop and daily accumulation rate were observed between the Reference and Antenna site after the antenna became operational. These four related community function variables all increased at the Antenna site with largest and most consistent increases occurring for chlorophyll measures. Compared to pre-operational data, the increase in chlorophyll at the Antenna site also occurred during a period of low amperage testing in 1986–1988, and did not increase further when the antenna became fully operational in 1989, indicating a low threshold for response. There was no significant differences between the Antenna and Reference sites in community structure variables such as diversity, evenness and the relative abundance of dominant diatoms. Thus, 76 Hz ELF electromagnetic radiation apparently did not change the basic makeup of the diatom community but did increase accumulation rates and standing crops of chlorophyll a and organic matter.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris have distinct phytoplankton populations. During 1975–76, the standing crop measured as chlorophyll- a was 5.5 times greater in Padarn than in Peris and the production rate, determined by the 14CO2 method, was faster by 3.4 times. These differences were attributed to the higher concentrations of phosphorus in the lower lake caused by treated sewage effluent. Incident light intensity, which was slightly lower in Peris due to mountain shading, and temperature, which was 1–4°C higher in Padarn, made little significant contribution to these differences during the summer. The reduced transparency of Padarn water, compared with that of Peris, resulted from denser phytopiankton crops in Padarn. During the summer, Padarn exhibited carbon dioxide depletion which correlated with the chlorophyll concentration. Light inhibition at the surfaces of both lakes correlated with solar radiation intensity. However, the relationship between pigment content and maximum photosynthetic rate was poor. Extracellular products accounted for about 16% of the total production in the lakes. Uptake of 14C-labelled acetate was low compared with that of 14CO2 uptake.  相似文献

1. The organic matter dynamics of streams dominated by herbs and grass on their banks are poorly understood, despite the fact that such streams are common worldwide. Further, herbs and grasses can provide large quantities of detritus to stream food webs, and particularly small streams can be heavily shaded by overhanging vegetation, perhaps limiting in‐stream primary production. 2. We quantified the standing crop of edge vegetation and associated macroinvertebrate communities along three headwater streams with herbaceous and grass riparian vegetation on agricultural land in the Piedmont of Maryland, U.S.A., measured the decomposition of four common species of herbs and grasses using experimental leaf packs, and removed edge vegetation experimentally to determine the effect of shading on benthic algal production. 3. Large standing crops of plant material (average range: 68–276 g ash‐free dry mass per m−2), composed largely of monocotyledons, were found at all three study streams. These values are similar to those for coarse particulate organic matter in deciduous forested streams in the eastern U.S.A. In addition, diverse assemblages of shredding macroinvertebrates were observed at all three study sites. 4. Decomposition of the herbs was faster than that of the grasses, and both decomposed faster than most deciduous tree leaf litter. The decomposition rates of the herbs and grasses were significantly related to leaf quality as measured by leaf nitrogen content. Macroinvertebrate shredders colonized all experimental leaf packs, and the colonization of the herbs was faster than that of the grasses. 5. The accrual of chlorophyll‐a after the removal of shading vegetation was faster than that measured prior to removal as well as that in an unmanipulated control reach. 6. Given that the standing crop of organic matter in streams with herbs and grass along their banks was similar to that in forested streams, that the organic matter was rich in nitrogen and used by detritivores, and riparian shading limited algal growth, we suggest that herbaceous and grass plant material may be an important allochthonous food resource in such systems.  相似文献

We used red shiner (Cyprinella lutrensis) as a model to examine ecosystem effects of water column stream minnows (Cyprinidae) in experimental streams. Benthic primary productivity, benthic invertebrate abundance, water column nutrient concentrations, size distribution of benthic particulate organic matter (BPOM), and sedimentation rates were measured across a range of fish densities (0–26.6 fish m–2) over a 35-day period. In addition, effects of fish density on algal standing crop and benthic invertebrates in experimental streams were examined over a longer time span (156 and 203 days). After 35 days, benthic primary productivity was positively associated with fish density, with an approximate three-fold increase in productivity between experimental streams stocked with no fish and those with 26.6 fish m–2. No effects on other ecosystem properties were detected after 35 days. Additionally, there was no effect on algal standing crop after 156 or 203 days and no effect on benthic invertebrates after 203 days. Because red shiners fed primarily on terrestrial insects, this experiment suggests that water column minnows can affect primary productivity in streams by transporting nutrients from terrestrial sources to the benthic compartment of the ecosystem. However, this effect may only be important in streams or during periods when nutrients are limiting.  相似文献
