The experiments in which phosphorus radionuclide was added to samples of algobacterial community of the Yenisei River taken near the production area of the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (Zheleznogorsk) made possible determining the uptake rates and coefficients of radionuclide accumulation by microorganisms. Ratios between processes of adsorption and accumulation of phosphorus radionuclide by components of water seston (suspended matter) have been determined. The portion of the specific radioactivity of phosphorus adsorbed by unit mass of seston (and algae) has been found to be not more than 7% of the activity accumulated by algal cells.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out in which 241Am was added to water samples containing macrophytes of the Yenisei River, and the radionuclide absorption rates and concentration factors were determined for the plants. It has been shown that the water moss (Fontinalis antipyretica) has a higher capacity to accumulate 241Am than the Canadian pondweed (Elodea canadensis) does. The laboratory experiments revealed that the capacity of dead biomass of the Canadian pondweed to accumulate 241Am is twice higher than that of living biomass. In contrast, no significant increase in 241Am accumulation by dead biomass of the water moss has been recorded. The transuranic element 241Am was firmly fixed by the plant biomass and was not released into water in the course of long-duration experiments.  相似文献

We performed bag experiments in a Canadian Shield lake with generally high seston (suspended food particles mainly composed of algae) carbon (C):phosphorus (P) ratios, and investigated the responses of individual and population growth of herbivorous Daphnia dentifera on their abundance with (+P) and without (−P) a phosphorus enrichment to lake water. In both treatments, increased abundance of D. dentifera reduced seston C concentration and was accompanied by decreases in population and individual growth rates. However, P-enrichment increased seston P concentration and then reduced seston C:P ratio from 400–700 to ca 100 (by atoms). As a result, both individual and population growth rates were significantly higher in the +P treatment at all animal abundances even though seston C concentrations were similar between the treatments. The magnitude of the growth enhancement by the P-enrichment was independent of animal abundance. Stepwise regression analyses revealed that 71 and 90% of the variance in the population and individual growth rates, respectively, were explained by seston C and P concentrations, and that the contribution of the seston P concentration was roughly the same as that of seston C. Such joint effects of seston C and P indicate that food quality (P content) as well as food quantity (C concentration) can influence Daphnia not only at the level of individual growth but also at the level of population dynamics in P-limited lakes. Our results thus strongly corroborate the hypothesis that the population development of a key herbivore Daphnia in P-limited Canadian Shield lakes is inhibited by the direct effects of P-limited food on individual growth, which weaken the strength of trophic cascading interactions starting from piscivorous fish through planktivorous fish and zooplankton to algae.  相似文献

Quantitative ratios of the biomasses of bacterio- and phytoplankton, interrelation of their production characteristics, and association of the functional characteristics with environmental factors were studied for Lake Khanka, the Yenisei River, and the Krasnoyarsk Reservoir. The ratio between the biomasses of bacterioplankton (Bb) and phytoplankton (Bp) in these water bodies was shown to vary within the range exceeding three orders of magnitude. Bacterioplankton biomass was relatively stable and varied from sample to sample by an order of magnitude. In more than 50% of the samples (total sample number, 495), bacterioplankton biomass exceeded that of the phytoplankton. The average Bb/Bp ratios for Lake Khanka, Yenisei River, and Krasnoyarsk Reservoir were 5.1, 2, and 1.4, respectively. Increased Bb/Bp ratios were found to correlate with elevated specific (per unit biomass) phytoplankton production. This finding indicated additional supply of biogenic elements to phytoplankton due to their recycling by bacterial communities. The ratio between bacterioplankton and phytoplankton production for Lake Khanka varied from year to year (0.07 to 0.76). For the Yenisei River and the Krasnoyarsk Reservoir these ratios were on average 0.19 and 0.27, respectively. According to the literature data for other water bodies, bacterial production may reach from 10 to over 100% of the primary production. The equilibrium density of bacterioplankton (maximal density of the population) in Lake Khanka was ~1.5 times higher than in the Yenisei River and the Krasnoyarsk Reservoir due to higher content of suspended mineral matter and associated organo-mineral detritus in the lake. The interaction between dissolved organic compounds sorbed on the surface of mineral particles results in chemical alteration of biochemically stable substrate into compounds which may be assimilated by aquatic microorganisms.  相似文献

The formation, particle size distribution, structure and retention of aggregates were studied in a river‐lake system of the lowland River Spree and factors influencing these processes were evaluated. Samples were taken from the inflow and outflow of a flushed lake, as well as along the adjacent flowing reach of the River Spree, between April 2001 and May 2002. The aim was to record the influence of the seasons and different turbulence intensities on the size, shape, composition, abundance and transport properties of the particles. As additional parameters, the phytoplankton biomass, the concentration of suspended particulate matter, the concentrations of nutrients and the discharge were measured. The abundance of the particles showed a strong seasonality in the investigated period, which closely correlated with the concentrations of suspended particulate matter and particulate organic matter in the water column. The organic carbon content of the suspended matter varied between 37% (dry weight) in summer and about 14% in winter. The concentration of particles ranged between 500 and 2500 particles/ml. The number of particles was significantly lower upstream from the lake than at the downstream transects. The majority of the aggregates in the River Spree were smaller than 500 µm, most of the particles even showing a diameter less than 50 µm. Many particles, above all algae, were washed out of the lake Neuendorfer See into the adjacent flowing reach of the River Spree. Algae influenced the abundance of the particles and contributed to the formation of aggregates with their stickiness. In the river flowing section large particles were formed by turbulence structures, whilst simultaneously the number of smaller particles decreased in the water column caused by aggregation processes. In general, an increasing flow velocity and discharge rate resulted in a larger amount of aggregates in the water column. On the other hand, particle abundance was reduced in the flow direction when the flow velocity was low. Under these conditions particles were retained by sedimentation and benthic filter‐feeding. The results of the studies devoted to the distribution of radionuclides 90Sr, 137Cs, 238Pu, 239 + 240Pu and 241Am in 1998-2003 in main components of Glubokoe Lake and Dalekoe-1 Lake located within Krasnensky flood lands of the Pripyat River (inner exclusion zone of the Chernobyl NPP) were analysed. In the last 150 years, the Lower Mississippi River (LMR) floodplain was extensively reduced in area with conversion of once regularly inundated floodplain wetlands to dry land. Yet, between the present levees, there remain substantial remnants of the historical floodplain, including various types of permanent backwater habitats. We hypothesized that degree and timing of hydrologic connection with the river main channel drives variation in physical and chemical properties, and phytoplankton community dynamics, in backwaters. Over 23 months, measurements were made in several sites varying in connection with the main channel. At high stages, the channel and backwaters converged in having elevated turbidity, suspended solids and dissolved nutrient concentrations, reduced algal biomass and production, a seston C:N ratio indicating predominantly allochthonous organic matter sources, and a diatom-dominated community. When connection was reduced, backwaters declined in suspended sediments and nutrients, surged in production and biomass, had a seston C:N ratio reflecting autochthonous production, and switched to a community dominated by cryptomonad algae. With prolonged isolation, biomass-specific production became nitrogen limited and declined. By a conceptual model, we illustrate the seasonally variable role of permanent floodplain backwaters as major sources of algal organic matter, and potentially for nutrient sequestration, within the Lower Mississippi system.  相似文献

Resuspension of bottom sediments by wind andtide-driven currents often occur in shallow waters,coastal embayments and estuaries. These processes maylead to dramatic variations in the concentration andorganic richness of suspended particle assemblages.Since resuspended matter is mainly inorganic,decreasing organic contents are usually associatedwith higher seston loads.Under this environmental context the feeding behaviourof bivalves shows a wide degree of plasticity, whichhas been interpreted as having high adaptive value. Inorder to evaluate benefits derived from thisbehaviour, we have used functional relationshipsobtained in previous studies, relating feedingparameters to characteristics of suspended food, topredict the effect that different feeding responseswould have exerted. In cockles, main processesdetermining energy acquisition are feeding rates andpreingestive food selection. Thus, the procedurefollowed in the present work consisted of simulatingrates of food absorption under alternative feedingbehaviours characterised by: (a) no preferentialingestion of filtered organic matter and (b) maintenance ofconstant clearance rates. In theabsence of selection of organic matter at thepreingestive level, ingestion rate of organics (OIR)would decline with increasing seston loads to 30% ofvalues predicted by functions fitted to experimentaldata; difference in absorption rate (AR) would be evengreater, falling to 10%, due to the strong effectthat the organic content of ingested matter exerts onabsorption efficiency. On the other hand, had theclearance rate (CR) kept constant despite theincreasing seston load, OIR and AR would have fallento values respectively 30% and 49% lower than actualvalues.From these results it is concluded that the ability ofsorting particles before ingestion and the capabilityof adjusting clearance rate are key elements in thefeeding behaviour that enable cockles to be welladapted to cope with changes in the water columncaused by resuspension events.  相似文献

The retention of 241Am in mice 48 h after administration by gavage is reported here. The 241Am was given to mice in the form of either 241Am nitrate or 241Am citrate. The 241Am was also injected into rats in the same form. The homogenized livers of those rats were subsequently administered by gavage to another group of mice. The retention of 241Am citrate was 1.5 X 10(-2)% of the original dose and was the highest among the compounds examined. The retention of biologically incorporated 241Am into the liver as 241Am nitrate and as 241Am citrate was 2.4 X 10(-3) and 2.6 X 10(-3)%, respectively, and was similar to the retention of 241Am nitrate, which was 2.8 X 10(-3)%. The ratio of the retention in the carcass to that in the liver for the 241Am citrate was lower than that of the 241Am nitrate and the biologically incorporated 241Am. This difference indicates that the distribution of 241Am in the animal body depends on the chemical form administered. The retention of liver-incorporated 241Am as citrate after autolysis of the liver is similar to that of fresh liver-incorporated 241Am citrate.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the genome damage induced by 241Am-irradiation using different parameters of cytogenetic evaluation in Allium-test. The root tip cells test-system for the cytogenetic effects studying was used. 241AmCl3 of different concentrations was used (1.5 x 10(-9)-1.5 x 10(-7) g/l). Water solution-to-plant transfer factor for 241Am was found to be 0.18 +/- 0.04. The internal doses of 241Am accumulated during germination were 0.37-37.00 cGy. The impact of 241Am-irradiation was evaluated on the mitotic index (MI), the yield of aberrant anaphases (AA), the distribution of chromosome aberrations number in cells and the average level of lesion of aberrant cell (LAC). Probably all these parameters are differ in sensitivity to damage factor, but only some changes in MI was revealed. It is supposed, that the absence of any changes in the distribution of chromosome aberrations number in cells and the average level of LAC in 241Am-irradiated cells confirm the absence of significant 241Am-impact on chromosomes, as the alpha-irradiation should cause significant damages in chromosomes. Although solutions of 241Am were high-concentrated, the seedlings didn't accumulate high internal doses. It appears the distribution of 241Am is a significantly heterogeneous hence it is possible the absorbed doses in nuclei can't reach the level necessary for revealing of cytogenetic effects.  相似文献

Summary The uptake of239Pu and241Am from different clay mineral-organic matter-sand mixtures simulating contrasting soil types was examined in growth chamber experiments. The mixtures represented various combinations of organic matter (0, 5 and 10%), kaolinite (11 type) and montomorillonite (21 type) clay minerals, each at the levels of 5, 10 and 25%, and purified quartz sand (as filler).Results indicated a marked reduction in uptake of both239Pu and241Am with increase in organic matter as well as clay content of the mixtures. The Pu Concentration Ratios (CRs) ranged from (2.5–7.0)×10–3 in the case of kaolinite-organic matter mixtures, and from (0.9–5.5)×10–3 in the case of montmorillonite-organic matter mixtures. The corresponding values of Am Concentration Ratios (CRs) obtained were (1.9–725.4)×10–3 in the case of kaolinite-organic matter mixtures, and between (0.7–3.5)×10–3 for the montmorillonite-organic matter mixtures.Reduction in the uptake of241Am with increasing clay content was more pronounced in the montmorillonite clay-organic matter mixtures as compared to that in the case of kaolinite-organic matter mixtures. While similar qualitative reduction in239Pu CRs with increasing clay content was observed, the reduction was less marked than in the case of241Am. The values for Am CRs were higher than the corresponding Pu CRs in kaolinite based mixtures whereas in the case of montmorillonite-organic matter mixtures Pu CRs exceeded the Am CRs.Increasing organic matter content and its interaction with both kaolinite and montmorillonite clay minerals were found to be equally effective in reducing the uptake of239Pu as well as241Am by plants.  相似文献

1. Food selection experiments were conducted by acclimating calanoid copepods (Eudiaptomus spp.) in suspensions of natural seston and then adding pairs of dual-labelled (14C/32P) algae. Each feeding trial measured selectivity between a small, high-quality reference alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardii, and a test alga that differed in size and/or food quality. The influence of food concentration on food selection was tested by using seston from two lakes with contrasting food abundance and by including treatments with filtered lake water ('starved’) and seston diluted with filtered water or enriched with cultured algae. 2. Copepods that had been starved or acclimated to natural seston with low food abundance preferred the larger of two labelled algae, regardless of the nutritional quality of the algae. In agreement with the predictions of an optimal diet model, however, copepods that were acclimated to high food conditions discriminated against low-quality foods, including digestion-resistant algae and dead algae. 3. Selectivity coefficients showed excellent agreement with a previous study involving the same taxa of copepods and labelled algae but in which the copepods had been acclimated to pairs of cultured algae rather than natural seston. Thus, these comparisons emphasize the importance of food availability in modulating copepod selectivity for foods that differ in nutritional quality and suggest that such behaviour occurs in nature.  相似文献

Seston in the impounded North Anna River (NAR) was analyzed and compared to that in the free-flowing South Anna River (SAR) in Virginia, U.S.A. A wet filtration technique was used to separate seston into five size classes. The overall quantity of organic seston was much lower in the NAR than in the SAR. The seston in the NAR was composed of more living organisms, in particular zooplankters in the medium large (234–864 µm) and small (105–234 µm) size classes and diatoms and other algae in the fine (43–105 µm) and very fine (25–43 µm) size classes. The percentage of zooplankton declined sharply before reaching the downstream study site (32 km). The seston in the NAR tended to consist of slightly larger particles, but 80–85% of the seston in both rivers was in the ultrafine (0.45–25 µm) size class, which was almost entirely composed of detritus. One indication of seston food quality, the organic/inorganic ratio, was considerably higher for the medium large and small size classes in the NAR immediately below the dam and for the fine and very fine size classes farther downstream. Another indication of food quality, the usable caloric content, showed that the seston in the NAR contained considerably less total assimilable energy as far as 32 km downstream from the dam, but that the medium large and small size classes were rich in assimilable energy immediately below the dam because of zooplankton released from the reservoir. Thus, the overall quantity and quality of seston was lower in the NAR, but the quality of the seston, for at least a short distance below the dam, was higher in a well-defined size range that can be effectively utilized by certain filter feeders.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. In 1981–84 limnocorral (LC) experiments were performed in Lake Lucerne. Switzerland, to manipulate the planktonic community by varying P fertilization and by removing large zooplankton (with a 95 μm screen).
2. The C:P ratios in both suspended and entrapped seston exceeded the 'ideal' C:P ratio of 106 proposed by Redfield, Ketchum & Richards (1963) when P was limiting algal growth.
3. P fertilization could decrease the sestonic C:P ratio to 106 only when P did not limit algal growth; P additions far exceeding the P loading of eutrophic lakes were necessary to obtain this situation.
4. Changes in epilimnetic C:P ratios were usually related to short- term changes in primary production, caused by variable in situ light conditions and turbulence, and subsequent variation in POC concentrations.
5. Entrapped seston in the 95 μm-filtered LCs showed C:P ratios slightly higher than those of suspended seston, indicating fast P release and slower C mineralization in the epilimnetic nutrient cycle.
6. Removing large crustacean zooplankton enhanced epilimnetic P mineralization, and C:P ratios of entrapped seston in the 95 μm-filtered LCs were increased.
7 Detritus formed a relatively high proportion of the seston and amounted to more than two-thirds of the measured POC concentration.
8. Calculations of algal P uptake using information on sestonic C:P ratios and 14C uptake rates are questionable, as long as detritus cannot be separated from algae and net carbon uptake cannot be accurately measured.  相似文献

1. We determined the longitudinal pattern of organic matter concentration, quality, size composition and spiralling length along a 310-km grassland river system (Taieri River, New Zealand). 2. Organic seston concentration (0.24–4.05 mg ash-free dry mass (AFDM) l–1) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration (2.3–5.7 mg C l–1) showed no obvious longitudinal patterns. In contrast, there was a significant downstream increase in inorganic seston concentration (0.13–13.73 mg ash l–1), presumably because of a downstream increase in the proportion of the catchment developed for agriculture. 3. Although there was a trend toward increasing particle size in the first 25 km of the river continuum, organic seston was primarily composed of ultrafine particles (0.6–30 μm) at all study sites. The ratio of coarse (> 250 μm) to ultrafine organic seston decreased logarithmically down the continuum. Organic content generally decreased with particle size. Ultrafine particles, however, had significantly higher organic fractions than fine (60–100 μm) and very fine (30–60 μm) particles. 4. Daily organic carbon turnover length ranged from 10 to 98 km and increased downstream. This is consistent with other studies along river continua and suggests that organic carbon turnover length is largely controlled by the relationship between channel dimensions and discharge, rather than the presence of specific retention devices. 5. Concentrations and nutritional quality of organic seston and concentrations of DOC were highest in an unconstrained floodplain reach in the upper river. These data suggest that new material enters the river channel in this reach, potentially providing an important energy source for the river community downstream. The effect of this reach on the longitudinal pattern of organic matter concentration and quality emphasizes how changes in channel form can alter river ecosystem structure and function.  相似文献

Analyses of stable isotope (δ13C and δ15N) and C:N ratios of food webs within a floodplain and a constricted-channel region of the Ohio River during October 1993 and July 1994 indicate that the increasingly influential flood pulse concept (FPC) does not, for either location, adequately address food web structure for this very large river. Furthermore, results of this study suggest that the riverine productivity model (RPM) is more appropriate than the widely known river continuum concept (RCC) for the constricted region of this river. These␣conclusions are based on stable isotope analyses of potential sources of organic matter (riparian C3 trees, riparian C4 grasses and agricultural crops, submerged macrophytes, benthic filamentous algae, benthic particulate organic matter, and transported organic matter containing detritus and phytoplankton) and various functional feeding groups of invertebrate and fish consumers. The FPC, which stresses the key contribution of organic matter, particularly terrestrial organic matter, originating from the floodplain to riverine food webs, was judged inappropriate for the floodplain region of the Ohio River for hydrodynamic and biotic reasons. The rising limb and peak period of discharge typically occur in November through March when temperatures are low (generally much less than 10°C) and greater than bank-full conditions are relatively unpredictable and short-lived. The major food potentially available to riverine organisms migrating into the floodplain would be decaying vegetation because autotrophic production is temperature and light limited and terrestrial insect production is minimal at that time. It is clear from our data that terrestrial C4 plants contribute little, if anything, to the consumer food web (based on δ13C values), and δ15N values for C3 plants, coarse benthic organic matter, and fine benthic organic matter were too depleted (∼7–12‰ lower than most invertebrate consumer values) for this organic matter to be supporting the food web. The RPM, which emphasizes the primary role of autotrophic production in large rivers, is the most viable of the remaining two ecosystem models for the constricted-channel region of the Ohio based on stable isotope linkage between sources and consumers of organic matter in the food web. The most important form of food web organic matter is apparently transported (suspended) fine (FTOM) and ultra-fine particulate organic matter. We propose that phytoplankton and detritus of an autochthonous origin in the seston would represent a more usable energy source for benthic (bivalve molluscs, hydropsychid caddisflies) and planktonic (microcrustaceans) suspension feeders than the more refractory allochthonous materials derived from upstream processing of terrestrial organic matter. Benthic grazers depend heavily on nonfilamentous benthic algae (based on gut analysis from a separate study), but filamentous benthic algae have no apparent connection to invertebrate consumers (based on δ13C values). Amphipod and crayfish show a strong relationship to aquatic macrophytes (possibly through detrital organic matter rather than living plant tissue). These observations contrast with the prediction of the RCC that food webs in large rivers are based principally on refractory FTOM and dissolved organic matter from upstream inefficiencies in organic-matter processing and the bacteria growing upon these suspended or dissolved detrital compounds. The conclusions drawn here for the Ohio River cannot yet be extended to other floodplain and constricted-channel rivers in temperate and tropical latitudes until more comparable data are available on relatively pristine and moderately regulated rivers. Wistar rats were given a single inhalation exposure to high-fired 241AmO2 particles and examined over their life span. A total of 310 rats were used: 259 exposed to 241Am for life-span study, 30 exposed to 241Am for early metabolism study, and 21 unexposed life-span controls. The activity median aerodynamic diameter of the aerosols was 0.75-1.39 microns. About 55% of alveolarly deposited 241Am was cleared from the lung with a half-life of 0.5 days, 37% with a half-life of 7 days, and 8% with a half-life of 580 days. Group mean lung doses ranged from less than 5.7 rad up to 1500 rad. Significant early mortality due to radiation pneumonitis was seen only in the highest exposure group. The percentage of rats with lung tumors was 0% for controls (21 rats), 1% at lifetime lung doses less than 10 rad (139 rats), 7% at 10-50 rad (86 rats), 0% at 50-100 rad (9 rats), 60% at 100-500 rad (10 rats), and 7% at 500 rad (15 rats). Only one liver and one bone tumor were found in all exposed rats, both at lifetime tissue doses less than 10 rad. The fate and carcinogenicity of inhaled 241AmO2 in the lung of rats were similar to what has previously been described for inhaled 244CmO2.  相似文献

Five laboratory experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of supplements of fatty acids and a green alga on the individual growth and reproduction of three species of tropical cladocerans Ceriodaphnia richardi, Daphnia ambigua, and D. gessneri feeding on natural seston from the Brazilian Lake Monte Alegre. Cohorts of newborns from cultivated females were submitted to one of the following treatments: (1) Natural seston, (2) Natural seston + microcapsules of EPA and DHA or linoleic and linolenic fatty acids, (3) Natural seston + oil-free microcapsules, and (4) Natural seston + green alga Scenedesmus spinosus (1 mg C l−1). Particulate organic carbon, algal carbon, C:P ratios of seston and green alga, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) content of seston and cladocerans, as well as phytoplankton composition, size, and shape were measured. The addition of fatty acids to seston did not significantly enhance growth and reproduction of the cladocerans, suggesting that sestonic PUFA content is sufficient for promoting cladoceran development, even in the cool–dry season when the fatty acids used in the experiments were 5–10 times lower in the seston than in the warm–wet season. Despite high C:P molar ratios in most experiments, there was only one indication of growth limitation by P. Reproduction was more affected than individual growth on some occasions by food quantity (energy) caused apparently by algal size, morphology, and digestion resistance. Energy availability, which is affected by algae morphological characteristics, seems to prevail over PUFA and P in controlling growth and reproduction of cladocerans in tropical Lake Monte Alegre.  相似文献

以百农矮抗58小麦为材料,采用大田试验的方法,研究了始穗期喷施不同浓度(0,10、30、50 mg·L-1)的5-氨基乙酰丙酸(ALA)对冬小麦花后干物质生产和旗叶衰老的影响.结果表明:10~50 mg·L-1 ALA处理有利于植株对干物质的积累,至成熟期其干物质总量明显高于对照(0 mg·L-1);10~50 mg·L-1 ALA处理各器官干物质的分配率与对照没有显著性差异,但其花后生产的干物质对产量的贡献率显著高于对照;在开花期,10~50 mg·L-1ALA处理的叶面积指数与对照没有显著性差异,但在乳熟期和腊熟期,叶面积指数显著高于对照.从开花期至蜡熟期,10~50 mg·L-1 ALA处理的旗叶SPAD值和净光合速率均高于对照;在灌浆后期,ALA处理降低了旗叶丙二醛(MDA)含量和相对电导率.与对照相比,10~50mg·L-1 ALA处理冬小麦的穗粒数、千粒重和产量显著增加,其中以30 mg·L-1 ALA处理增产效果最大.  相似文献

The metabolic cost as measured by respiration and ammonia excretion rates associated with a selective as compared to a non-selective feeding behaviour was determined for the blue mussel, Mytilus trossulus. Mussels were challenged with four environmentally relevant seston matrices of different quality and quantity, which were known to evoke either a sorting response (i.e., selective feeding) where organic-rich particles were selected over inorganic particles as compared to no sorting (i.e., non-selective) where either inorganic or organic particles were ingested by the bivalve. Seston matrices were prepared by mixing known quantities of silt and algae such that the following extent of feeding responses would occur; no pre-sorting of ingested material, (1) no algae+50 mg silt l−1, (2) 150×106 cells l−1 of algae+no silt, and, where pre-sorting of ingested material occurred, (3) 20×106 cells l−1 of algae and 20 mg l−1 of silt, and (4) 150×106 cells l−1 of algae and 50 mg l 1 of silt. A control, which represented basal metabolism consisting of mussels exposed only to filtered seawater (0.45 μm), was included for a total of five treatments. Mussel respiration and ammonia excretion rates were independent of whether mussels were pre-sorting or not sorting ingested material. Of the four matrices, only rates determined for conditions of maximum seston quality and quantity where pre-sorting of the seston occurred were significantly different from control mussels (p<0.05, ANOVA). Estimates of net energy used for feeding, where net energy is total energy intake (food) minus energy expenditure (energy lost through respiration and excreta as measured by ammonia excretion rates), indicated that feeding, whether selective or non-selective required only 0.92% of net energy intake. Hence, mussels appear to be highly adapted to a dynamic food environment with negligible costs associated with the feeding process, even when significant pre-selection of organic-rich particles occurs.  相似文献
