1. Pure tone displacement sensitivity and bandwidth were measured from the saccule of the ear in two anabantid species (Trichogaster trichopterus and Helostoma temincki) using microphonic potentials with a 1 microV RMS threshold for the second harmonic of the stimulus frequency. 2. Saccular microphonics were recorded in both species from 80 to 1600 Hz, with lowest thresholds between 100 and 200 Hz. The overall microphonic response curves (sensitivity and bandwidth) of the two species were statistically similar to one another with an analysis of variance, although there were statistically different thresholds at 100 and 800 Hz. 3. The hair cell orientation patterns of the saccular epithelia differ in the two species. Consequently, the comparative sizes of the saccular sensory epithelium and numbers of sensory hair cells were examined. The saccular sensory epithelium of Helostoma is about 40% larger and contains nearly 50% more hair cells than the saccular epithelium of a comparably sized Trichogaster. 4. An extracranial air bubble, located in the suprabranchial chamber, is found in both species. The bubble has direct access to the saccular chamber in Trichogaster through a foramen which is absent in Helostoma. Despite the difference in morphology and the larger numbers of sensory hair cells in Helostoma, hearing sensitivity and bandwidth is similar in the two species. Although the structural differences in the auditory periphery do not affect pure tone sensitivity and bandwidth, other aspects of fish hearing such as frequency discrimination, discrimination of signals in the presence of noise, and/or sound localization ability may be affected by these structural differences.  相似文献

Repeated stimulus causes a specific suppression of neuronal responses, which is so-called as Stimulus-Specific Adaptation (SSA). This effect can be recovered when the stimulus changes. In the auditory system SSA is a well-known phenomenon that appears at different levels of the mammalian auditory pathway. In this study, we explored the effects of adaptation to a particular stimulus on the auditory tuning curves of anesthetized rats. We used two sequences and compared the responses of each tone combination in these two conditions. First sequence consists of different pure tone combinations that were presented randomly. In the second one, the same stimuli of the first sequence were presented in the context of an adapted stimulus (adapter) that occupied 80% of sequence probability. The population results demonstrated that the adaptation factor decreased the frequency response area and made a change in the tuning curve to shift it unevenly toward the higher thresholds of tones. The local field potentials and multi-unit activity responses have indicated that the neural activities strength of the adapted frequency has been suppressed as well as with lower suppression in neighboring frequencies. This aforementioned reduction changed the characteristic frequency of the tuning curve.  相似文献

Seven different limb malformations types were defined in 544 affected newborns, apparently free from other anomalies, obtained from a series of 297,299 livebirths. These seven malformation types were: polydactyly, limb reduction, brachydactyly, symphalangy, syndactyly and split hand/foot. One anomaly type was present in 472 newborns (1.58/1,000) and two or three in 72 (0.24/1,000). The observed combinations of two or three limb malformation types cannot be explained as chance association. Therefore, a common etiopathogenic mechanism has to be considered when two or more limb malformation types are combined in a given individual. The most frequent observed combinations were: reduction-brachydactyly, reduction-syndactyly, brachydactyly-syndactyly, polydactyly-syndactyly, and reduction-brachydactyly-syndactyly. Based on affected limb distribution, sex ratio, and familial recurrence rates, it is suggest that a reduction anomaly is the primary component in all tested combinations while syndactyly tends to be a secondary one when combined with any other limb anomaly type.  相似文献

Symmetry-based resistance as a novel means of lower limb rehabilitation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Robotic devices hold much promise for use as rehabilitation aids but their success depends on identifying effective strategies for controlling human-robot interaction forces. We developed a robotic device to test a novel method of controlling interaction forces with the intent of improving force symmetry in the limbs. Users perform lower limb extensions against a computer-controlled resistive load. The control software increases resistance above baseline in proportion to lower limb force asymmetry (balance between left and right limb forces). As a preliminary trial to test the device and controller, we conducted two experiments on neurologically intact subjects. In experiment 1, one group of subjects received symmetry-based resistance while performing lower limb extensions (n=10). A control group performed the same movements with constant resistance (n=10). The symmetry-based resistance group improved lower limb symmetry during training (ANOVA, p<0.05), whereas the control subjects did not. In experiment 2, subjects (n=10) successfully used symmetry-based resistance to alter their lower limb force production towards a target asymmetry (ANOVA, p<0.05). These studies suggest that symmetry-based resistance may hold rehabilitation benefits after orthopedic or neurological injury. Specifically, performing strength training therapy with this controller may allow hemiparetic individuals to focus better on increasing strength and neuromuscular recruitment in their paretic limb while experiencing symmetric limb forces.  相似文献

对声音时间信息的分辨在人和动物感知声音信息的过程中至关重要.在自然声环境中,声音信息总处于一定的噪声背景下.文章以间隔探测阈值为指标测定了人对纯音和噪声的间隔探测阈值,以及持续噪声背景对间隔探测阈值的影响.声音信号采用1000~10000 Hz的纯音信号和白噪声信号,声音强度为70 dB SPL.背景噪声为持续白噪声,强度分别为45、55、65 dB SPL.结果表明,对纯音信号,随着背景噪声强度增加,间隔探测阈值有升高的趋势.对噪声信号来说,45、55 dB SPL的背景噪声对噪声信号的间隔探测阈值无显著影响,但65 dB SPL的背景噪声使间隔探测阈值显著升高.研究结果提示,背景噪声能够在一定程度上影响人对声音时间信息的感知,影响的程度与背景噪声的强度有关.  相似文献

Abnormal and excessive plantar pressure is a major risk factor for the development of foot ulcers in patients with loss of protective pain sensation. Repeated pressure with each step can result in inflammation at specific points, followed by ulcer formation. Patients with peripheral nerve disease are unable to prevent the development of such lesions, which often lead to amputation. For this reason, it has been suggested that a fundamental therapeutic intervention should be the reduction of high plantar pressure. We have developed a portable, battery-operated ambulatory foot pressure device (AFPD) which has two important functions: (1) to determine the areas of high plantar pressure, and (2) to provide an acoustic alarm, adjusted to a specific pressure load, which is triggered when weight-bearing exceeds the predetermined plantar pressure. A memory of plantar pressure parameters allows for downloading of the data and sequential analysis during the investigation period. Such an alarm device could replace the lack of pain sensation and may play an important role in the prevention of ulcer development and lower extremity amputation.  相似文献

Hearing in the FM-bat Phyllostomus discolor: a behavioral audiogram   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0  
Absolute auditory thresholds of six adult lesser spear-nosed bats Phyllostomus discolor (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) were determined in a two-alternative forced-choice procedure. Behavioral responses to pure tone stimuli could be elicited throughout the tested frequency range of 5–142 kHz. The shape of the average audiogram is characterized by two sensitivity peaks and a pronounced increase of thresholds around 55 kHz, and towards the limits of the tested frequency range. The spectral extent of both sensitivity peaks shows a close relation to the bandwidth of two types of species-specific vocalizations. The first low threshold area (> 10 and < 55 kHz) of the audiogram seems perfectly adapted to the directive call used for intraspecific communication, whereas the second sensitivity peak, centered around 85 kHz, covers most of the bandwidth of the species' echolocation calls.Abbreviations CF constant frequency - FM frequency modulation - l left - r right - SPL Sound pressure level  相似文献

Recent studies have determined a seemingly consistent feature of able-bodied level ground walking, termed the roll-over shape, which is the effective rocker (cam) shape that the lower limb system conforms to between heel contact and contralateral heel contact during walking (first half of the gait cycle). The roll-over shape has been found to be largely unaffected by changes in walking speed, load carriage, and shoe heel height. However, it is unclear from previous studies whether persons are controlling their lower limb systems to maintain a consistent roll-over shape or whether this finding is a byproduct of their attempt to keep ankle kinematic patterns similar during the first half of the gait cycle. We measured the ankle–foot roll-over shapes and ankle kinematics of eleven able-bodied subjects while walking on rocker shoes of different radii. We hypothesized that the ankle flexion patterns during single support would change to maintain a similar roll-over shape. We also hypothesized that with decrease in rocker shoe radii, the difference in ankle flexion between the end and beginning of single support would decrease. Our results supported these hypotheses. Ankle kinematics were changed significantly during walking with the different rocker shoe radii (p<0.001), while ankle–foot roll-over shape radii (p=0.146) and fore–aft position (p=0.132) were not significantly affected. The results of this study have direct implications for designers of ankle–foot prostheses, orthoses, walking casts/boots, and rocker shoes. The results may also be relevant to researchers studying control of human movements.  相似文献

In a two-alternative, forced-choice task lesser bulldog bats were trained to distinguish between a pure tone pulse and a pulse composed of a series of brief tonal steps oscillating between two different frequencies. The tone-step pulse gradually approximates the pure tone pulse as the frequency difference between the steps becomes progressively smaller. Frequency difference limens for the brief tonal frequency steps were determined for a broad range of ultrasonic frequencies. The variation in tone-step difference limens with frequency appears to be correlated to the frequency structure of the bat's short-constant-frequency/frequency-modulated echolocation sound. There was a marked decline in the value of the relative frequency difference limens (Weber ratio) over a fairly narrow range of frequencies above the constant frequency and a sharp increase in threshold above this range. The relative thresholds for frequency discrimination were small and uniform over the frequency range of the frequency-modulated sweep and increased for frequencies below the frequency- modulated sweep. Thus, the most accurate frequency-discrimination abilities occur over a narrow frequency range around the frequency of the constant-frequency component of returning echoes. 用不同频率的短纯音骨导刺激,在7名(14耳)听力正常受试者同时记录双耳声诱发耳声发射(EOAE)。此法比单耳轮流记录省时一半。研究结果表明,EOAE 为一种窄带声,其中心频率随刺激声频率增高而增高,提示 EOAE 产生部位在接受刺激声频率对应的耳蜗部位附近。EOAE 的潜伏期与刺激强度无明显关系,但有随刺激声频率增高而变短的趋势,可能与不同频率刺激声诱发的 EOAE 在基底膜上产生的部位与鼓膜之间的距离不等有关。除1耳用4.0kHz 外,用1.0,2.0,3.0和4.0kHz 短纯音刺激在14耳全可记录到 EOAE,0.5kHz和6.0kHz 则分别在10耳和7耳记录到 EOAE。0.5—6.0kHz 短纯音诱发的 EOAE 的阈值均值连线所得的声发射耳蜗图上可见,1.0kHz 处阈值最低,而在这些受试者所测得的中耳共振频率平均值为1100±230Hz,推测1.0kHz EOAE 阈值最低与中耳的传导函数有关。本文描述的骨导双耳同时记录 EOAE 并描记声发射耳蜗图的方法可用于临床的听力客观评价。  相似文献

In the present study, we examined the frequency dependence of auditory search performance. Detection thresholds were measured for an 800-Hz target tone in a sequence of distractor tones (informational masking) as a function of frequency separation between the target and the distractor tones. The results showed that the thresholds decreased monotonically with frequency separation increasing. To further quantify the frequency dependence of auditory search performance, we applied a roex function (Patterson and Moore, 1986) to estimate a filter bandwidth for the threshold data. The estimated bandwidth was wider than that of an auditory filter by a factor of five (Leek et al., 1991). This result, together with some earlier results (Mori, 2003), demonstrates the effectiveness of the informational masking we used.  相似文献

This research compares the performance of bottom-up, self-motivated behavioral interventions with top-down interventions targeted at controlling an "Influenza-like-illness". Both types of interventions use a variant of the ring strategy. In the first case, when the fraction of a person's direct contacts who are diagnosed exceeds a threshold, that person decides to seek prophylaxis, e.g. vaccine or antivirals; in the second case, we consider two intervention protocols, denoted Block and School: when a fraction of people who are diagnosed in a Census Block (resp., School) exceeds the threshold, prophylax the entire Block (resp., School). Results show that the bottom-up strategy outperforms the top-down strategies under our parameter settings. Even in situations where the Block strategy reduces the overall attack rate well, it incurs a much higher cost. These findings lend credence to the notion that if people used antivirals effectively, making them available quickly on demand to private citizens could be a very effective way to control an outbreak.  相似文献

Frequency selectivity of hearing was measured in the green treefrog, Hyla cinerea. A psychophysical technique based on reflex modification was used to obtain masked threshold estimates for pure tones (300-5,400 Hz) presented against two levels of broadband masking noise. A pure tone (S-1) presented 200 ms prior to a reflex-eliciting stimulus (S-2) inhibited the motor reflex response to S-2. The magnitude of this reflex modification effect varied systematically with the sound pressure level (SPL) of S-1, and threshold was defined as the SPL of S-1 at which the reflex modification effect disappeared. Masked thresholds were used to calculate critical ratios, an index of the auditory system's frequency selectivity. The frequency selectivity of the treefrog's hearing is greatest and critical ratios are lowest (22-24 dB) at about 900 and 3,000 Hz, the two spectral regions dominant in the male treefrog's species-specific advertisement call. These results suggest that the treefrog's auditory system may be specialized to reject noise at biologically-relevant frequencies. As in other vertebrates, critical ratios remain constant when background noise level is varied; however, the shape of the treefrog's critical ratio function across frequencies differs from the typical vertebrate function that increases with increasing frequency at a slope of about 3 dB/octave. Instead, the treefrog's critical ratio function resembles its pure tone audiogram. Although the shape of the treefrog's critical ratio function is atypical, the critical ratio values themselves are comparable to those of many other vertebrates in the same frequency range. In electromyographic studies on healthy subjects, we recorded the H reflex from the right m. soleus and measured changes in the magnitude of this reflex response related to voluntary movements of the contralateral lower limb performed according to a visual signal. The effects of back and plantar flexions of the contralateral foot of the tested subject in the lying and standing positions were examined. Changes in the H reflex magnitude began to be recorded 60 to 90 msec prior to voluntary movements of the contralateral limb. When the subject was in the lying position, these changes looked like facilitation of the H reflex at both types of movement of the contralateral foot. When the subject stood, facilitation preceded back flexion of the foot of this extremity, while plantar flexion was preceded by inhibition of the tested H reflex. Our results show that the pattern of preliminary changes in the muscle tone of one of the lower limbs is determined by the type of future movement of another limb and peculiarities of the support function realized by this limb.  相似文献

An uncommon trackway of a seabird consisting of impressions of the right foot accompanied at the left side at the supposed position of the foot only by holes was produced by a gull having two legs, but only one foot. Foot size and stride are typical of an adult herring gull. The stride is unequal between right-left and left-right impression by ~15% as the digitigrade producer experienced re-distribution of load due to the missing foot. Tracks of disabled seabirds are underrepresented in reports of both modern settings as well as the fossil record when compared with modern observations. In present time, about 2% of the seabirds have injured feet or legs. Today, however, injuries of seabirds might have increased due to human fishery activities. Actual observations show that fossilisation of such trackways is favoured by microbes preferentially growing in the impressions that are moist for a prolonged period of time.  相似文献

The duration of stance and swing phase and step and stride length are important parameters in human gait. In this technical note a low-cost ultrasonic motion analysis system is described that is capable of measuring these temporal and spatial parameters while subjects walk on the floor. By using the propagation delay of sound when transmitted in air, this system is able to record the position of the subjects' feet. A small ultrasonic receiver is attached to both shoes of the subject while a transmitter is placed stationary on the floor. Four healthy subjects were used to test the device. Subtracting positions of the foot with zero velocity yielded step and stride length. The duration of stance and swing phase was calculated from heel-strike and toe-off. Comparison with data obtained from foot contact switches showed that applying two relative thresholds to the speed graph of the foot could reliably generate heel-strike and toe-off. Although the device is tested on healthy subjects in this study, it promises to be extremely valuable in examining pathological gait. When gait is asymmetrical, walking speed is not constant or when patients do not completely lift their feet, most existing devices will fail to correctly assess the proper gait parameters. Our device does not have this shortcoming and it will accurately demonstrate asymmetries and variations in the patient's gait. Despite walking with a wider step width, amputees remain 20% more likely to fall than non-amputees. Since mediolateral (ML) balance is critical for ambulation and contingent on ML foot placement, we used a ML disturbance to perturb walking balance and explore the influence of prosthetic foot stiffness on balance recovery. Ten transtibial amputees were fit with two commonly prescribed prosthetic feet with differing stiffness characteristics; 12 non-amputees also participated. A perturbation device that released an air burst just before heel strike imposed a repeatable medial or lateral disturbance in foot placement. After a medial disturbance, the first recovery step width was narrowed (p<0.0001) for the prosthetic limb (−103%), the sound limb (−51%) and non-amputees (−41%) and more than twice as variable. The ML inclination angle remained reduced (−109%) for the prosthetic limb, while the sound limb and non-amputees approached undisturbed levels (p<0.0004). Amputees required five steps to return to undisturbed step width after a prosthetic medial disturbance versus two steps for the sound limb and for non-amputees. After a lateral disturbance, the first recovery step was widened for the prosthetic limb (+82%), sound limb (+75%), and wider than non-amputees (+51%; p<0.0001), with all participants requiring three steps to return to undisturbed step width. Amputees also exhibited a similar upper torso response compared to the non-amputees for both disturbances. Prosthetic feet with different stiffness properties did not have a significant effect. In conclusion, amputee balance was particularly challenged by medial disturbances to the prosthetic limb implying a need for improved interventions that address these balance deficits.  相似文献

The effect of inescapable foot-shock on the tail-flick response and on the startle response to brief shocks and brief tones was studied in rats. In the first experiment, 25 minutes of inescapable foot shock (stressor) produced a significant increase in tail-flick latency which was antagonized by the opioid antagonist naloxone (2.0 mg/kg). In the second experiment, the startle response to an electric shock to the tail was significantly diminished by the stressor, and this effect was not significantly reduced by naloxone. However, the size of the startle response to a brief tone was significantly increased in rats treated with naloxone. Thus, rats injected with naloxone had a decreased startle to shock but an increased startle to tone following inescapable foot shock. Finally, tones which preceded shocks by one second produced a facilitation of the startle response to the shocks in tests that followed exposure to the stressor. This facilitation was not affected significantly by naloxone. These results indicate that the changes in the startle response following the stressor were not mediated exclusively by endogenous opioids.  相似文献

In anurans reproductive behavior is strongly seasonal. During the spring, frogs emerge from hibernation and males vocalize for mating or advertising territories. Female frogs have the ability to evaluate the quality of the males'' resources on the basis of these vocalizations. Although studies revealed that central single torus semicircularis neurons in frogs exhibit season plasticity, the plasticity of peripheral auditory sensitivity in frog is unknown. In this study the seasonally plasticity of peripheral auditory sensitivity was test in the Emei music frog Babina daunchina, by comparing thresholds and latencies of auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) evoked by tone pips and clicks in the reproductive and non-reproductive seasons. The results show that both ABR thresholds and latency differ significantly between the reproductive and non-reproductive seasons. The thresholds of tone pip evoked ABRs in the non-reproductive season increased significantly about 10 dB than those in the reproductive season for frequencies from 1 KHz to 6 KHz. ABR latencies to waveform valley values for tone pips for the same frequencies using appropriate threshold stimulus levels are longer than those in the reproductive season for frequencies from 1.5 to 6 KHz range, although from 0.2 to 1.5 KHz range it is shorter in the non-reproductive season. These results demonstrated that peripheral auditory frequency sensitivity exhibits seasonal plasticity changes which may be adaptive to seasonal reproductive behavior in frogs.  相似文献
