The dietary management of childhood diabetes is complex. Is it possible to educate young people to balance carbohydrate with their insulin? Can dietary knowledge be translated into lasting behaviour change? Do present teaching methods provide the skills necessary for children and parents to adjust their insulin therapy adequately? Evidence shows great variation in glycaemic control between centres and countries but the impact of dietary education methods is poorly evaluated and its links with clinical and psychosocial outcomes is virtually unknown. There is also little evidence to suggest cohesive teamworking with clear dietary targets for glycaemic control, lipids, incidence of hypoglycaemia, compliance, effect on peer and sibling relationships, and evaluation of individual dietary components, e.g. fibre, fat, antioxidants. There is wide variation in methods of dietary education, which are often based on historic practice. They include rigid counting of grams of carbohydrate, carbohydrate portion assessments, qualitative diets, low glycaemic index diets and the more recent 'intensified' carbohydrate measures with daily adjustments of insulin (the basis also of pump management). This last method has many benefits although it requires extensive nutrition education, it allows greater flexibility and variety of food intake, is sensitive to the varying daily energy expenditure of childhood and it addresses postprandial glycaemic excursions, all of which are inadequately managed by conventional therapy. However, one of the problems of overemphasizing carbohydrate measurement is that total carbohydrate intake may be suppressed, with a resulting increase in fat, this may contribute to an increase in cardiovascular risk. The ISPAD Consensus Guidelines 2000 contain dietary recommendations but scientific evidence is often lacking. Limited dietary studies show that some countries can meet guidelines more successfully than others. There are many reasons for this, such as food availability, types of food eaten, food preferences and family/cultural/religious influences. Educational methods must be adapted to local customs. Is there enough evidence to recommend a particular dietary education method? What outcomes do we hope to achieve? The workshop explored these issues in order to develop a deeper understanding of the complexity of dietary modification in childhood diabetes.  相似文献

目的:了解重庆市市区中小学教师膳食食物摄入与营养知识知晓情况,为指导该人群合理营养膳食提供依据。方法:以问卷形式对重庆市市区1345名中小学教师的膳食结构及营养知识知晓情况进行调查并对调查结果进行分析。结果:每天喝牛奶的占76%;经常摄入豆制品的占74%;经常摄入鱼类的占52%;每天摄入肉类的占50%;经常摄入蛋类的占78%;每天摄入蔬菜200 g的占55%;经常摄入粗粮的占73%。对自身膳食营养重视的占62%;回答了解或知道中国居民膳食指南占总人数的38%,其中男性占12%,女性占26%;回答了解或知道中国居民膳食宝塔的占37%,其中男性占10%,女性占27%。结论:该人群膳食食物摄入种类较多,食物来源丰富,但营养知识知晓情况较低,对自身健康关注的意识还有待提高。  相似文献

本文在文献研究和实地调查的基础之上, 结合目前开展的关于壮族生物多样性相关传统知识的调查、整理与编目工作, 分别从酸食文化、织染文化、地名文化和文学艺术的角度对壮族文化多样性和生物多样性之间的关系进行了初步探究, 并从自然崇拜、乡规民约和习惯法、传统生态观念以及传统医药文化等几个方面探讨了传统文化对当地生物多样性的保护作用。结果表明: (1)壮族文化多样性与生物多样性密切相关。丰富的生物多样性孕育了传统文化, 而传统文化的形成和发展又直接或间接地丰富了当地的生物多样性; (2)壮族人民在长期生产生活中创造的传统文化和传统知识促进了当地生物多样性的保护与可持续利用; 而对生物多样性的保护又进一步保障了当地传统文化的传承。本文还对传统知识和传统文化的发展现状及受威胁因素进行了讨论, 并以此为基础, 提出传承壮族传统文化、保护和可持续利用传统知识的相关建议, 即应通过加强宣传和立法, 建立传统知识数据库和发展乡村旅游等形式, 加强对传统知识与传统文化的保护。  相似文献

目的:评价营养保健知识宣教对妇女产褥期营养保健知识认知、饮食行为的效果。方法:选择青岛市孕晚期妇女作为研究对象,随机分为干预组和对照组,对干预组对象进行营养保健知识宣教。结果:干预组对象大部分营养保健知识的知晓率显著高于对照组,干预组对象从医务人员、书刊杂志获得营养保健知识的发生率(83.1%、72.3%)显著高于对照组对象(65.2%、56.0%);干预组对象薯类、鱼类、豆制品、绿叶蔬菜、坚果,膳食纤维、烟酸、钙、维生素C的每日摄入量显著高于对照组,蛋类,胆固醇的摄入量显著低于对照组。结论:针对性强的营养保健知识教育能明显提高产褥期妇女知识水平,促进健康的饮食行为,因此应推广有针对性的营养保健知识宣教。  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Wild food plants (WFPs) contribute to the nutrition, economy and even cultural identity of people in many parts of the world. Different factors determine the preference and use of WFPs such as abundance, availability, cultural preference, economic conditions, shortage periods or unsecure food production systems. Understanding these factors and knowing the patterns of selection, use and cultural significance and value of wild food plants for local communities is helpful in setting priorities for conservation and/or domestication of these plants. Thus in this study knowledge of wild food plant use among four groups namely Dai, Lahu, Hani and Mountain Han in Naban River Watershed National Nature Reserve ((NRWNNR), Xishuangbanna were documented and analyzed to find the similarity and difference among their plant use. METHODS: Data on wild food plant use was collected through freelisting and semi-structured interviews and participatory field collection and direct observation. Botanical plant sample specimens were collected, prepared, dried and identified. RESULTS: A total of 173 species and subspecies from 64 families and one species of lichen (Ramalina sp.) are used as WFP. There were differences on the saliency of wild food plant species among four ethnic groups. Consensus analysis revealed that knowledge of wild food plant use for each ethnic group differs from others with some variation in each group. Among informant attributes only age was related with the knowledge if wild food plant use, whereas no significant relationship was found between gender and age*gender and informants knowledge of wild food plant use. CONCLUSION: Wild food plants are still used extensively by local people in the NRWNNR, some of them on a daily base. This diversity of wild food plants provide important source of nutrients for the local communities which much of their caloric intake comes from one or few crops. The results also show the role of ethnicity on the preference and use of wild food plants. There is a big potential for harvesting, participatory domestication and marketing of WFPs especially in the tourism sector in the area.  相似文献

Apartheid isolated South Africa economically and politically from the global arena and its citizens culturally from one another. Post-apartheid policymakers have sought to address prior inequalities in education, health care and employment, concerns central to biodiversity conservation initiatives. This article examines the role of school gardening programs on the distribution and transmission of local phytomedicinal knowledge. Urban Cape Town, an area of high biocultural diversity, presents a unique environment in which to observe cultural distinctions in medicinal plant utilization, the impact of school gardening, and the recent cultural amalgamation in local knowledge transmission. Local healers chose 16 common medicinal plants, which were used to examine fifth and seventh graders’ knowledge of local remedies. Results indicate that knowledge of different plants was concentrated in specific ethnic groups and amongst recent migrants. It is proposed that ethnic separation during the apartheid era insulated cultures on socioeconomic and geo-environmental strata, thereby preserving local knowledge.  相似文献

Based on concerns that useful weed diversity in agroecosystems as well as associated traditional knowledge may be declining due to agricultural intensification and indiscriminate eradication of weeds, we studied weed diversity and use by local ethnic groups in tea plantations in northern Thailand under different agricultural intensities and landscape complexities, namely agroforestry, organic, and Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) based conventional system. In each system, we sampled five tea plantations using belt-transects of 25 m2. Use data were collected through interviews with specialist informants. We recorded 214 weed species (gamma-diversity) of which 66 were useful. Agroforestry system had the highest alpha- and beta-weed diversity, suggesting that the low agricultural intensity and high landscape complexity in this system is associated with higher weed diversity in tea plantations. The common weed species were clearly different in the three systems and only a small fraction (22 species) of widespread weeds was shared among them, resulting in low weed similarity between systems. The 66 useful species of weeds were mostly for food and medicine. Uses of some weeds were shared between systems. Many of the useful weeds are invasive species, suggesting that they are prevalent and inexpensive plant resources for rural people and could represent alternative resources in the future. Because the occurrence of invasive weeds may affect the natural habitats of the native flora, integrating the exploitation of weeds into weed management strategies may reduce the weed population while sustaining agrobiodiversity and conserving associated traditional knowledge in the long term.  相似文献

传统生态知识是民族生态学研究的核心范畴,国外已有多年的研究基础,国内的相关研究正是方兴未艾。通过文献查询和比较分析等方法,介绍了国外已有的传统生态知识的民族生态学分析框架的3个模型:知识-实践-信仰的三角形框架;本土经验知识-资源管理知识-社会制度知识-世界观知识的四椭圆框架;事实观察-管理体系-旧有及当下利用-伦理价值-文化特征-宇宙观的五边形框架。结合田野调查研究,提出了一个立体的传统生态知识的民族生态学分析模型,强调了传统生态知识的动态特征,将民族对于自然的被动认识和主动认知、民族人际关系规范、民族的哲学与伦理等方面所呈现出的传统生态知识进行了分类,从而为民族生态学的调查研究提供了方法上的建议。最后总结了这个立体的传统生态知识分析框架的意义,并建议在我国的生态文明建设中发展和应用民族生态学。  相似文献

Despite being located at the crossroads of Asia, genetics of the Afghanistan populations have been largely overlooked. It is currently inhabited by five major ethnic populations: Pashtun, Tajik, Hazara, Uzbek and Turkmen. Here we present autosomal from a subset of our samples, mitochondrial and Y- chromosome data from over 500 Afghan samples among these 5 ethnic groups. This Afghan data was supplemented with the same Y-chromosome analyses of samples from Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia and updated Pakistani samples (HGDP-CEPH). The data presented here was integrated into existing knowledge of pan-Eurasian genetic diversity. The pattern of genetic variation, revealed by structure-like and Principal Component analyses and Analysis of Molecular Variance indicates that the people of Afghanistan are made up of a mosaic of components representing various geographic regions of Eurasian ancestry. The absence of a major Central Asian-specific component indicates that the Hindu Kush, like the gene pool of Central Asian populations in general, is a confluence of gene flows rather than a source of distinctly autochthonous populations that have arisen in situ: a conclusion that is reinforced by the phylogeography of both haploid loci.  相似文献

This study investigated 5-year cumulative incidence of unhealthy dietary habits across various gender and age groups within the CroHort study, a repeated cross-sectional survey of Croatian adults. The results monitoring the frequency of certain foodstuffs consumption indicate that 10.6% of examinees (10.9% of men, and 9.1% of women) reported worsening of their dietary habits in 2008 as compared to 2003. The cumulative incidence of unhealthy diet was higher in men than in women, and was highest in younger age-groups (18-34 years), both in men and women. The public health programmes should be strengthened in a way which would put a special emphasis on education of younger adults, especially males, on nutrition health impact and healthy diet principles.  相似文献

The data on mitochondrial DNA diversity in seven local populations (villages) and four territorial groups of Tatars of the Tobol-Irtysh basin are presented. In the Turkic-speaking populations from the Tobol and Irtysh river basins, high levels of intergroup and interpopulation mtDNA variation were observed. It was demonstrated that genetic diversity of the territorial groups of Tatars of the Tobol-Irtysh basin resulted from various interethnic relationships and different ethnic components integrated into these groups.  相似文献

This article discusses the prospects and limitations of the scientific basis for offering personalized nutrition advice based upon individual genetic information. Two divergent scientific positions are presented, with an ethical comment. The crucial question is whether the current knowledge base is sufficiently strong for taking an ethically responsible decision to offer personalized nutrition advice based upon gene–diet–health interaction. According to the first position, the evidence base for translating the outcomes of nutrigenomics research into personalized nutritional advice is as yet immature. There is also limited evidence that genotype-based dietary advice will motivate appropriate behavior changes. Filling the gaps in our knowledge will require larger and better randomized controlled trials. According to the second position, personalized nutrition must be evaluated in relation to generally accepted standard dietary advice—partly derived from epidemiological observations and usually not proven by clinical trials. With personalized nutrition, we cannot demand stronger evidence. In several specific cases of gene–diet interaction, it may be more beneficial for individuals with specific genotypes to follow personalized advice rather than general dietary recommendations. The ethical comment, finally, considers the ethical aspects of deciding how to proceed in the face of such uncertainty. Two approaches for an ethically responsible way forward are proposed. Arguing from a precautionary approach, it is suggested that personalized dietary advice should be offered only when there is strong scientific evidence for health effects, followed by stepwise evaluation of unforeseen behavioral and psychological effects. Arguing from theoretical and applied ethics as well as psychology, it is also suggested that personalized advice should avoid paternalism and instead focus on supporting the autonomous choice of each person.  相似文献

Despite careful attention to animal nutrition and wellbeing, gastrointestinal distress remains relatively common in captive non‐human primates (NHPs), particularly dietary specialists such as folivores. These patterns may be a result of marked dietary differences between captive and wild settings and associated impacts on the gut microbiome. However, given that most existing studies target NHP dietary specialists, it is unclear if captive environments have distinct impacts on the gut microbiome of NHPs with different dietary niches. To begin to examine this question, we used 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicon sequences to compare the gut microbiomes of five NHP genera categorized either as folivores (Alouatta, Colobus) or non‐folivores (Cercopithecus, Gorilla, Pan) sampled both in captivity and in the wild. Though captivity affected the gut microbiomes of all NHPs in this study, the effects were largest in folivorous NHPs. Shifts in gut microbial diversity and in the relative abundances of fiber‐degrading microbial taxa suggest that these findings are driven by marked dietary shifts for folivorous NHPs in captive settings. We propose that zoos and other captive care institutions consider including more natural browse in folivorous NHP diets and regularly bank fecal samples to further explore the relationship between NHP diet, the gut microbiome, and health outcomes.  相似文献

This paper examines the relationship between obesity, knowledge and education in a South Australian community setting. In public health circles and public understandings it is commonly assumed that obesity is the result of lack of knowledge about the right things to eat or how to take care of oneself. It is thought that education will fill this knowledge lacunae and most public health campaigns have education as the main platform of information dissemination to enact behavioural change. Based on long‐standing ethnographic work in a community targeted as obesogenic, I explore the limits of mainstream nutrition education, and how constructing people as having deficit knowledge has the unwarranted effect of implying ignorance. Key to the analysis is Ingold's articulation of different modalities of education, one dominant mode which inducts people into rules and regulations of already pre‐formed knowledge, and another which sees education as learning that goes on in the doing of everyday environments.  相似文献

The sustainable use of natural and agricultural biodiversity in the diet can be instrumental to preserve existing food biodiversity, address malnutrition, and mitigate adverse effects of dietary changes worldwide. This systematic review of literature summarizes the current evidence on the contribution of plant and animal biodiversity to human diets in terms of energy intake, micronutrient intake, and dietary diversification. Peer-reviewed studies were searched in ten databases using pre-defined search terms. Only original studies assessing food biodiversity and dietary intake were included, resulting in a total of 34 studies. 7, 14, and 17 studies reported information in relation to energy intake, micronutrient intake, and dietary diversification, respectively. In general, locally available foods were found to be important sources of energy, micronutrients, and dietary diversification in the diet of particularly rural and forest communities of highly biodiverse ecosystems. The current evidence shows local food biodiversity as important contributor of nutritious diets. Findings are, however, limited to populations living in highly biodiverse areas. Research on the contribution of biodiversity in diets of industrialized and urban settings needs more attention. Instruments are needed that would more appropriately measure the dietary contribution of local biodiversity.  相似文献

There has been significant recent interest in the commercial utilisation of algae based on their valuable chemical constituents many of which exhibit multiple bioactivities with applications in the food, cosmetic, agri- and horticultural sectors and in human health. Compounds of particular commercial interest include pigments, lipids and fatty acids, proteins, polysaccharides and phenolics which all display considerable diversity between and within taxa. The chemical composition of natural algal populations is further influenced by spatial and temporal changes in environmental parameters including light, temperature, nutrients and salinity, as well as biotic interactions. As reported bioactivities are closely linked to specific compounds it is important to understand, and be able to quantify, existing chemical diversity and variability. This review outlines the taxonomic, ecological and chemical diversity between, and within, different algal groups and the implications for commercial utilisation of algae from natural populations. The biochemical diversity and complexity of commercially important types of compounds and their environmental and developmental control are addressed. Such knowledge is likely to help achieve higher and more consistent levels of bioactivity in natural samples and may allow selective harvesting according to algal species and local environmental conditions for different groups of compounds.  相似文献

Human and ecosystem health converge around biological diversity issues. Cultivated and wild plants as food and medicine make essential contributions to human health, which in turn provides rationales for conservation. While wild and cultivated plant diversity reasonably facilitates dietary diversity and positive health outcomes, the challenges of demonstrating this relationship limit its impact in concept, policy, and practice. We present a rationale for testing the dietary contribution of biological diversity to improved eye health as a case study based on existing phytochemical, pharmacological, and clinical knowledge. We consider the empirical evidence needed to substantiate, interpret, and apply this relationship at a population and ecosystem level within a unified research framework. Epidemiological data strongly support the prevention of childhood vitamin A deficiency blindness, cataract, and age-related macular degeneration by fruit and vegetable consumption. Phytonutrients, including the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, protect the eye from oxidative stress and harmful light exposure. Laboratory, community, and population level research should prioritize food composition of dietary plants from both agriculture and the wild. Intervention studies, focus groups, and transmission of knowledge of local species and varieties within communities will further interpretation of epidemiological data. Population-based studies combining clinical data and measures of access and consumption of biological diversity are key to demonstrating the important relationships among biodiversity, dietary diversity, and health outcomes.  相似文献

The importance of medicinal plants in traditional healthcare practices, providing clues to new areas of research and in biodiversity conservation is now well recognized. However, information on the uses for plants for medicine is lacking from many interior areas of Himalaya. Keeping this in view the present study was initiated in a tribal dominated hinterland of western Himalaya. The study aimed to look into the diversity of plant resources that are used by local people for curing various ailments. Questionnaire surveys, participatory observations and field visits were planned to illicit information on the uses of various plants. It was found that 35 plant species are commonly used by local people for curing various diseases. In most of the cases (45%) under ground part of the plant was used. New medicinal uses of Ranunculus hirtellus and Anemone rupicola are reported from this area. Similarly, preparation of "sik" a traditional recipe served as a nutritious diet to pregnant women is also not documented elsewhere. Implication of developmental activities and changing socio-economic conditions on the traditional knowledge are also discussed.  相似文献

长毛谷(Changmaogu/Oryza sativa)是云南省兰坪白族普米族自治县白族支系拉玛人传统栽植的一个特有的有色稻种,是我国农家品种的典型代表,处于稀有濒危状态,但对该品种的研究较少。为促进长毛谷保护及可持续利用,该研究利用民族植物学及营养学的方法,对兰坪当地有关长毛谷品质特征、传统知识与文化、开发利用现状及存在的问题进行了调查和分析,并测定稀有农家品种长毛谷的营养成分,与普通常见稻种的营养成分进行对比,探究长毛谷的营养价值。结果表明:(1)长毛谷产地的白族支系拉玛人积累了丰富的关于长毛谷的传统知识和文化,包括传统耕作知识、相关历史典故、传统食用知识和种子的交换及保存文化。(2)长毛谷具有高含量的可利用碳水化合物、水分、灰分、总膳食纤维和花青素且含有一定量的原花青素,表明长毛谷具有较高的营养保健价值。综上认为,长毛谷的原生境保护模式可为其他农家品种的保护提供科学参考,有利于长毛谷等农家品种的可持续利用。  相似文献
