Four methods of determining the substrate requirements for synthesisof a kiwifruit [Actinidia deliciosa (A. Chev.) C. F. Liang etA. R. Ferguson var. deliciosa cv. Hayward] berry were comparedusing data derived from common kiwifruit berry samples collectedfrom anthesis to fruit maturity. The four methods were basedon fruit proximal analysis, elemental analysis, heats of combustion,or tissue carbon content. All methods gave similar patternsof seasonal costs and values of final cost to the plant (mean1.21 g glucose g–1 season–1) but there was lessagreement for growth respiration (mean 0.147 g glucose g–1season–1). This is the first time that a continuous recordof growth cost over the course of development has been presented, and the trends in seasonal cost reflect the uptake into andsynthesis of the different biochemical constituents in the fruit. The differences between the results of each method reflect theunderlying assumptions used in their development. It appearsfrom this work that the method of McDermitt and Loomis (1981),utilizing elemental analyses, is most preferred. Actinidia deliciosa (A. Chev.) C. F. Liang et A. R. Elemental and proximate organic compositions were determinedfor biomass samples from two cultivars of grain sorghum [Sorghumbicolor (L.) Moench] grown in the field with two levels of nitrogensupply. Several methods of calculating the costs of biomasssynthesis were compared. Penning de Vries' Production Values(PV), based on proximate analyses and Glucose Values (GV) calculatedfrom elemental analyses or heats of combustion, yielded similartrends in response to variation in nitrogen supply and plantage but were not different for the two cultivars. The correctnessof the GV calculations was confirmed through comparisons ofmeasured and predicted heats of combustion. The ratio of PV/GV,representing the growth efficiency (E) of the samples, was closeto constant (0·84 + 0·02). Since PV is an estimateof the true growth yield, the constant growth efficiency allowsthe estimation of that value from elemental analyses. The truegrowth yield of the sorghum crops ranged from 0·73 to0·74 g biomass g–1 glucose when grown with adequateN and from 0·77 to 0·78 with low N supply. Overthe crop cycle, with adequate N, 0·19 of the C used ingrowth processes was calculated as lost in growth respiration;with limited N, 0·17 was lost. Sorghum bicolor (L.) Carbon dioxide efflux from 5- to 20-day-old pea fruits was measuredfor plants grown in controlled environment at 15 °C and600 µmol s–1 m–2 photon flux density in a16 h photoperiod. The rate of CO2 output per fruit increasedquickly from 0.005 to 0.018 mg CO2 min–1 during fruitelongation and subsequently more slowly to 0.030 mg CO2 min–1as the fruits inflated. On a d. wt basis the rate was highest,0.175 mg CO2 g–1 min–1, in the youngest fruits anddeclined curvilinearly with increasing fruit weight to 0.02mg CO2 g–1 min–1. Separation of maintenance andgrowth components was achieved by starvation methods and bymultiple regression analysis. From the latter method estimatesof the maintenance coefficient declined hyperbolically from150±8.7 mg carbohydrate g–1 d. wt day–1 inthe very young fruits (0.05 g) to 10.4±0.36 mg carbohydrateg–1 d. wt day–1 in older fruits (2.0 g). On a nitrogenbasis maintenance costs decreased from 2240 to 310 mg carbohydrateg–1 nitrogen day–1 while nitrogen concentrationfell from 6.7 to 3 per cent d. wt. A simple linear relationshipbetween maintenance cost per unit d. wt and nitrogen concentrationwas not observed. A growth coefficient of 50±6.7 mg carbohydrate g–1growth (equivalent to a conversion efficiency, YG, of 0.95)was estimated for all fruits examined. The overall efficiency, Y, increased from a mean of 0.70 to0.85 during fruit elongation and subsequently declined to 0.80.For a given fruit weight, efficiency increased asymptoticallywith relative growth rate; both asymptote and slope of the relationshipincreased as the fruits grew. Phytoplankton biomass, primary production rates and inorganicnutrients were measured in the uppermost layer of the ice-edgeregion and in open water and compared with environmental factorsduring a three-week cruise in September – October 1979.Biomass and production values were low (maximum 2.2 µgchl a l–1, 2.5 mg C m–3 h–1). A post-bloomcommunity of diatoms, consisting mainly of representatives ofChaetoceros, Leptocylindrus, Nitzschia and Thalassiosira, waspredominant. Concentrations of phosphate were quite low (maximum0.55 µM I–1). Nitrate and silicate ranged from nomeasurable quantities to 5.7 µM l–1 and 3.8 µMl–1, respectively. The possibility of light and nutrientlimitation on phytoplankton growth is discussed.  相似文献

Biomass, net primary production and energy fixation in an agesequence of Himalayan alder (Alnus nepalensis D. Don) plantationswere estimated in the Kalimpong forest division of the easternHimalayas. Biomass in the plantations ranged from 106 t ha–1(7-year stand) to 606 t ha–1 (56-year stand) demonstratingthe potential of the alder for accumulating large biomass. Netprimary production and net energy fixation rates of the plantationswere reduced by nearly half in the 7-year stand (25 t ha–1year–1; 421 x 106 kJ ha–1 year–1) comparedwith the 56-year stand (13 t ha–1 year–1; 215 x106 kJ ha–1 year–1). Compartmental models of energystorage and flow rates were developed for the 7-year and 56-yearstands. The production efficiency, energy conversion efficiencyand energy efficiency in N2 fixation have inverse relationshipswith plantation age. These efficiencies, when treated with eachother, showed significant exponential functions. Alnus nepalensis D. Growth and nitrate uptake kinetics in vegetatively growing barley(Hordeum vulgare L., cvs Laevigatum, Golf, and Mette) were investigatedin solution culture under long-term limitations of externalnitrogen availability. Nitrate was fed to the cultures at relativeaddition rates (RA) ranging from 0.02 to 0.2 d–1. Therelative growth rate (RG, calculated for total plant dry weight)correlated well with RA in the range 0.02 to 0.07 d–1.In the RA range from 0.07 to 0.2 d–1 RG continued to increase, but an increasing fraction of nitrogen, added and absorbed, was apparently stored rather than used for structural growth. The RG of the roots was less affected by RA. Vmax, for net nitrateuptake increased with RA up to 0.11 d–1, but decreasedat higher RA. The decline in Vmax coincided with a build-upof nitrate stores in both roots and shoots. Vmax, expressedper unit nitrogen in the plants (the relative Vmax, was higherthan required for maintenance of growth (up to 30-fold) at lowRA, whereas at higher RA the relative Vmax decreased. Kineticpredictions of steady-state external nitrate concentrationsduring N-limited growth ranged from 0.2 to 5.0 mmol m–3over the RG range 0.02 to 0.11 d–1. It is suggested thatthe nitrate uptake system is not under specific regulation atlow RA, but co-ordinated with root protein synthesis and growthin general. At RA higher than 0.11 d–1, however, specificregulation of nitrate uptake, possibly via root nitrate pools, become important. The three cultivars showed very similar growthand nitrate uptake characteristics. Key words: Barley, growth, nitrogen limitation, nitrate uptake, kinetics  相似文献

In situ growth and development of Neocalanus flemingeri/plumchrusstage C1–C4 copepodites were estimated by both the artificial-cohortand the single-stage incubation methods in March, April andMay of 2001–2005 at 5–6°C. Results from thesetwo methods were comparable and consistent. In the field, C1–C4stage durations ranged from 7 to >100 days, dependent ontemperature and chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration. Averagestage durations were 12.4–14.1 days, yielding an averageof 56 days to reach C5, but under optimal conditions stage durationswere closer to 10 days, shortening the time to reach C5 (fromC1) to 46 days. Generally, growth rates decreased with increasingstage, ranging from 0.28 day–1 to close to zero but weretypically between 0.20 and 0.05 day–1, averaging 0.110± 0.006 day–1 (mean ± SE) for single-stageand 0.107 ± 0.005 day–1 (mean ± SE) forartificial-cohort methods. Growth was well described by equationsof Michaelis–Menten form, with maximum growth rates (Gmax)of 0.17–0.18 day–1 and half saturation Chl a concentrations(Kchl) of 0.45–0.46 mg m–3 for combined C1–3,while Gmax dropped to 0.08–0.09 day–1 but Kchl remainedat 0.38–0.93 mg m–3 for C4. In this study, in situgrowth of N. flemingeri/plumchrus was frequently food limitedto some degree, particularly during March. A comparison withglobal models of copepod growth rates suggests that these modelsstill require considerable refinement. We suggest that the artificial-cohortmethod is the most practical approach to generating the multispeciesdata required to address these deficiencies.  相似文献

Two approaches to quantifying relationships between nutrientsupply and plant growth were compared with respect to growth, partitioning, uptake and assimilation of NO3 by non-nodulatedpea (Pisum sativum L. cv. Marma). Plants grown in flowing solutionculture were supplied with NO3 at relative addition rates(RAR) of 0·03, 0·06, 0·12, and 0·18d–1, or constant external concentrations ([NO3)of 3, 10, 20, and 100 mmol m–3 over 19 d. Following acclimation, relative growth rates (RGR)approached the corresponding RARbetween 0·03–0.12 d-1, although growth was notlimited by N supply at RAR =0.18 d-1. Growth rates showed littlechange with [NO3–] between 10–100 mmol m–3(RGR=0·15 –0·16 d-1). The absence of growthlimitation over this range was suggested by high unit absorptionrates of NO3, accumulation of NO3 in tissues andprogressive increases in shoot: root ratio. Rates of net uptakeof NO3 from 1 mol m–3 solutions were assessed relativeto the growth-related requirement for NO3, showing thatthe relative uptake capacity increased with RGR between 0·03–0·06d–1 , but decreased thereafter to a theoretical minimumvalue at RGR  相似文献

The effect of glucose on flower bud formation was studied inthin-layer tissue cultures of epidermal strips from flower stalksof Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Samsun. A minimum concentration of 30 mol m–3 glucose in the MS-mediumcontaining 1.0 mmol m–3 of both NAA and BA was necessaryfor flower bud formation. With 150 mol m–3 glucose a minimumstay of 10 d was required for optimal flower bud formation. Withholding glucose for a limited period at different time intervalsafter the onset of culture caused a delay in flower bud formationand did not affect previous development on glucose. The resultsindicated that competence for flower bud initiation is not restrictedto the early stage of culture. The process may start at anytime later at the appropriate glucose concentration. However, for both optimal initiation and further development of flowerbuds the presence of a metabolizable sugar is required. Incubationof the tissue on glucose is associated with higher respirationrate. Key words: Flower formation, Glucose, mannitol, Nicotiana tabacum, Respiration, tissue culture  相似文献

The calanoid copepod, Eudiaplomus graciloides, was reared fromegg to adult on uni-algal diets (0.1. 0.5 and 2.5 mg dry wt1–1) using the green alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii,as food, or on a mixed diet consisting of Lake Esrom water filteredthrough a plankton net with pore size 45 µm and supplementedwith C. reinhardtii (2.5 mg dry wt 1–1). On the mixeddiet at 21.0°C growth in body dry wt (W, µg dry wt)was exponential, and the growth constants were 0.21 day–1in the early to mid juvenile stage (N1 - C4) and 0.11 day–1in the late juvenile to early adult stage (C4-A). At 14.5°Cthe corresponding growth rate constants were 0.10 and 0.08 day–1.Similar growth rates were found at uni-algal concentrationsof 0.5 and 2.5 mg dry wt I–1, and it was argued that thethreshold concentration for growth in Eudiaptomus was closeto 0.1 mg dry wt I–1. The clearance (C, ml h–1)of copepodites was measured on the uni-algal diets. The constantsof the regression (C = aWb) were: a = 0.125, b = 0.858 (2000C. reinhardtii ml–1), a = 0.068, b = 0.849 (10 000), a= 0.028, b = 0.875 (50 000). Ingestion rates were calculatedfrom the clearances and the average algal concentrations. Atthe three food levels the average daily rations were 30, 67and 125% of body dry wt. The respiration rate (R, nl O2 h–1)was measured in individuals reared on the mixed diet. The constantsof the regression (R = aWb) were: a = 4.82, b = 1.07 (nauplii,14.5°C), a = 4.17, b = 0.904 (copepodites and adults, 14.5°C),a = 6.87, b = 0.757 (copepodites and adults, 21.0°C). Nosignificant difference in the respiration rate of copepoditesreared on uni-algal diets and the mixed diet could be demonstrated.Energy budgets were calculated. The assimilation efficiencyand the gross growth efficiency of copepodites decreased markedlywith increasing food concentration, the net growth efficiencyvaried from an average of 0.44 at the lowest algal concentrationto 0.60 on the mixed diet. The results are discussed in relationto previous findings with both freshwater and marine copepods.  相似文献

When grown in pots and well-watered, the relative growth ratesof the above ground parts of two species of Moricandia (M. arvensis,an intermediate C3–C4 species, and M. moricandioides,a C3 species) were inferior to those of two cultivated Brassicaspecies (B. campestris and B. napus). The Moricandia specieshad thicker leaves (greater d.wt per unit leaf area) with morechlorophyll than the Brassica species and had slightly greaterrates of photosynthesis per unit leaf area at an irradiance(400–700 nm) of 2000 µmol quanta m–2 s –1.Leaves of M. arvensis, known to have a CO2 compensation pointbetween that of C3 and C4 species, had a lower ratio of theintercellular to atmospheric partial pressure of CO2 (C1/Ca)and a greater instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE) thanthose of M. moricandioides and the Brassica species. In 6–14-day-old etiolated seedlings of Euphorbia lashyrisa latex triterpene synthesis of 19 µg day–1 wasrecorded. This production was proportional to stem growth. Laticiferdistribution in the cotyledons and stem was studied. In ultra-thinsections the occurrence of many mitochondria was observed. A14C-latex triterpene synthesis was measured after 14C-glucoseand 14C-sucrose uptake by the cotyledons in which most of the14C-triterpenes were synthesized. 14C-incorporation into theselipids from [1–14C]glucose, [6-14C]glucose and [3,4–14points to a glycolytic catabolism of glucose prior to terpenesynthesis. The possible involvement of mitochondria in thissynthesis is discussed. Euphorbia lathyris, triterpene synthesis, laticifer, latex, mitochondria, ultrastructure  相似文献

Yield stress threshold (Y) and volumetric extensibility () arethe rheological properties that appear to control root growth. In this study they were measured in wheat roots by means ofparallel measurement of the growth rate (r) of intact wheatroots and of the turgor pressures (P) of individual cells withinthe expansion zone. Growth and turgor pressure were manipulatedby immersion in graded osmoticum (mannitol) solutions. Turgorwas measured with a pressure probe and growth rate by visualobservation. The influence of various growth conditions on Yand was investigated; (a) At 27 °C.In 0.5 mol m–3 CaCl2 r, P, Y and were20.7±4.6 µm min–1, 0.77±0.05 MPa,0.07±0.03 MPa and 26±1.9 µm min–1MPa–1 (expressed as increase in length), respectively.Following 24 h growth in 10 mol m–3 KC1 these parametersbecame 12.3±3.5 µm min–1, 0.72±0.04MPa, 0.13±0.01 MPa and 21±0.7 µm min–1MPa–1. After 24 h osmotic adjustment in 150 mol m–3mannitol/0.5 mol m–3 CaCl2 r= 19.6±4.2 µmmin–1, P = 0.68±0.05 MPa and Y and were 0.07±0.04MPa and 30±0.2 µm min–1 MPa–01, respectively. After 24 h growth in 350 mol m–3 mannitol/0.5 mol m–3CaCl2 r= 13.3±4.1 µm min–1, P= 0.58±0.07MPa, Y=0.12±0.01 MPa and ø 32±0.2 tim min–1MPa–1. During osmotic adjustment in 200 mol m–3mannitol/0.5 mol m–3 CaCl2, with or without KCl, the recoveryof growth rate corresponded to turgor pressure recovery (t1/2approximately 3 h). (b) At 15 °C. Lowered temperature dramatically influencedthe growth parameters which became r= 8.3±2.8 um min–1,P=0.78 MPa, r=<0.2 MPa and =15±0.1 µm min–1MPa–1. Therefore, Y and are influenced by 10 mol m–3 K+ ionsand low temperature. In each case the effective pressure forgrowth (P-Y) was large indicating that small fluctuations ofsoil water potential will not stop root elongation. Chickpea cultivar ILC 482 was inoculated with salt-tolerantRhizobium strain Ch191 in solution culture with different saltconcentrations added either immediately with inoculation or5 d later. The inhibitory effect of salinity on nodulation ofchickpea occurred at 40 dS m–1 (34.2 mol m–3 NaCl)and nodulation was completely inhibited at 7 dS m–1 (61.6mol m–3 NaCl); the plants died at 8 dS m–1 (71.8mol m–3 NaCl). Chickpea cultivar ILC 482 inoculated with Rhizobium strain Ch191spcstrwas grown in two pot experiments and irrigated with saline water.Salinity (NaCl equivalent to 1–4 dS m–1) significantlydecreased shoot and root dry weight, total nodule number perplant, nodule weight and average nodule weight. The resultsindicate that Rhizobium strain Ch191 forms an infective andeffective symbiosis with chickpea under saline and non-salineconditions; this legume was more salt-sensitive compared tothe rhizobia, the roots were more sensitive than the shoots, and N2 fixation was more sensitive to salinity than plant growth. Cultivated Agave mapisaga and A. salmiana can have an extremelyhigh above-ground dry-weight productivity of 40 Mg ha–1yr–1. To help understand the below-ground capabilitiesthat support the high above-ground productivity of these Crassulaceanacid metabolism plants, roots were studied in the laboratoryand in plantations near Mexico City. For approximately 15-year-oldplants, the lateral spread of roots from the plant base averaged1.3 m and the maximal root depth was 0.8 m, both considerablygreater than for desert succulents of the same age. Root andshoot growth occurred all year, although the increase in shootgrowth at the beginning of the wet season preceded the increasein growth of main roots. New lateral roots branching from themain roots were more common at the beginning of the wet season, which favoured water uptake with a minimal biomass investment, whereas growth of new main roots occurred later in the growingseason. The root: shoot dry weight ratio was extremely low, less than 0.07 for 6-year-old plants of both species, and decreasedwith plant age. The elongation rates of main roots and lateralroots were 10 to 17 mm d–1, higher than for various desertsucculents but similar to elongation rates for roots of highlyproductive C3 and C4 agronomic species. The respiration rateof attached main roots was 32 µmol CO2 evolved kg–1dry weight s–1 at 4 weeks of age, that of lateral rootswas about 70% higher, and both rates decreased with root age.Such respiration rates are 4- to 5-fold higher than for Agavedeserti, but similar to rates for C3 and C4 agronomic species. The root hydraulic conductivity had a maximal value of 3 x 10–7ms–1 MPa–1 at 4 weeks of age, similar to A. deserti. The radial hydraulic conductivity from the root surface to thexylem decreased and the axial conductivity along the xylem increasedwith root age, again similar to A. deserti. Thus, although rootsof A. mapisaga and A. salmiana had hydraulic properties perunit length similar to those of a desert agave, their highergrowth rates, their higher respiration rates, and the greatersoil volume explored by their roots than for various desertsucculents apparently helped support their high above-groundbiomass productivity Key words: Crassulacean acid metabolism, productivity, root elongation rate, root system, water uptake  相似文献

The internal cycling of nitrogen (N) has been studied in applerootstocks grown in sand culture and subjected to a constantN supply, or defoliation, or withholding the N supply in theautumn in order to manipulate the amount of N stored over thewinter. The trees subsequently received either no N or 8–0mol N m–3 (labelled with 15N to 498 atom%) with the irrigationthe following spring in order to determine the effect of thecurrent N supply on the remobilization of N for leaf growth. Provision of an autumnal N supply delayed leaf senescence andreduced the amount of N withdrawn from leaves from 156 mg Nplant–1 to 91 mg N plant–1. Loss of protein ribulose1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RUBISCO) accounted for83–87% of the soluble protein N lost during leaf senescence, there being a preferential loss of RUBISCO compared with othersoluble leaf proteins. Remobilization of N from perennial woody tissues (stems androots) in the spring was used predominantly for leaf growth. The amount of N remobilized depended upon the size of the Nstore, but was unaffected by the current N supply, demonstratingthat fertilization of trees does not alter the efficiency withwhich they cycle N. Degradation of RUBISCO in the autumn accountedfor between 32% and 48% of the N subsequently remobilized forleaf growth the following spring, suggesting that RUBISCO hasa role as a summer store for N. Measurements of microclimate and photosynthesis of lucerne var.Europe were made in the field during the spring of 1976. Themaximum rate of canopy gross photosynthesis (14.3 g CO2 m–2h–1, I = ) was 2.5 times greater than that of S 24 perennialryegrass at the same LAI. This difference was due to differencesin individual leaf photosynthesis. The photosynthetic rate ofthe youngest fully expanded leaf of lucerne remained constantthroughout the experimental period at 3.6 g CO2 m–2 h–1(300 W m–2). Measurements of soil water potential profiles indicated thatlucerne extracted water from the soil to a depth of at least800 mm, with a region of maximum uptake between 400 and 600mm. This capability, with a moderate mean leaf resistance of460 s m–1, conferred a high assimilation efficiency onlucerne, with a mean water use efficiency of 34 g H2O lost pergram of carbohydrate assimilated, compared with 200 g H2O pergram of carbohydrate for S 24. We used coleoptile sections of Avena sativa, Sorghum bicolor, and Zea mays seedlings to examine interactions between epidermalgrowth factor (EGF) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) that mayaffect plant growth and development. Our 24-h bioassays employedthree controls ranging in dilution from 10–4 to 10–8g ml–1: (1) 50 mM potassium-phosphate buffer solution(pH=6.0), (2) bovine serum albumin, a nonspecific protein; and(3) IAA; plus two treatments: (1) mouse epidermal growth factor(EGF) ranging from 10–6 to 10–10gml–1, and(2) EGF + IAA. In all three species growth in IAA, EGF, andEGF + IAA treatments showed significant increases over controls;EGF+IAA showed significant increases in growth over IAA alone. As the concentrations of IAA decreased, the EGF and IAA interactionbecame more pronounced. At the highest IAA concentrations, EGF+ IAA increased growth rates ca. 2% to 39%, whereas at lowerIAA concentrations EGF + IAA promoted growth as much as 121%,thereby lowering the normal IAA physiological set point up tothree or four orders of magnitude. Our data suggest that aninteraction between EGF and IAA may allow plants to recognizeand respond to animal biochemical messengers, resulting in changesin plant cell elongation that ultimately may alter plant growthpatterns. The growth of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) in mesotrophicLake Constance was measured in situ during a 13 month period.Experiments were conducted with 10 µm pre-filtered lakewater incubated in diffusion chambers at 3 m water depth atthe sampling location for 24 h. Growth rates were calculatedfrom changes in cell numbers occurring during the period ofincubation. Growth rates of all dominant taxa showed pronouncedseasonal variation (–0.13 to 1.76 day–1 and weregenerally highest in summer at high water temperatures. In situgrowth rates were well below maximum growth rates known forthe respective and similar species from laboratory experiments. While water temperature was a key parameter positively relatedto the growth of all HNF species, the effect of various potentialfood items was taxon specific and less clear. Bacterial abundancewas equally important as temperature for growth in the smallbactenvorous Spumella sp., but was insignificant for growthrates of the larger omnivorous Kathablepharis sp. In Spuniellasp., 84% of the observed seasonal variation of its growth ratecould be explained by temperature and bacterial food supply.Based on these results, a multiple linear regression equationwith temperature and bacterial concentration as dependent variableswas calculated for the growth rate of Spumella. Taxon-specificproduction rates were derived from growth rates and averagebiomass of these two species, and compared to total HNF productionestimated from previously measured community growth rates andbiomass in Lake Constance. Production peaks of Spumella sp.and Kathablepharis sp. alternated seasonally. Total HINF productionranged from –0.01 to 10 mg C m–3 day–1. Theaverage seasonal production varied between 1.4 and 33 mg C m–3day–1 over 6 consecutive years. These small protozoa thuscontribute a substantial amount to total zooplankton productionin Lake Constance.  相似文献

In two experiments, the functioning and metabolism of nodulesof white clover, following a defoliation which removed abouthalf the shoot tissue, were compared with those of undefoliatedplants. In one experiment, the specific respiration rates of nodulesfrom undefoliated plants varied between 1160 and 1830 µmolCO2 g–1h–1, of which nodule ‘growth and maintenance’accounted for 22 ± 2 per cent, or 27 ± 3.6 percent, according to method of calculation. Defoliation reducedspecific nodule respiration and nodule ‘growth and maintenance’respiration by 60–70 per cent, and rate of N2 fixationby a similar proportion. The original rate of nodule metabolismwas re-established after about 5 d of regrowth; during regrowthnodule respiration was quantitatively related to rate of N2,fixation: 9.1 µmol CO2 µmol–1N2. With the possible exception of nodules examined 24 h after defoliation, the efficiency of energy utilization in nitrogenase functioningin both experiments was the same in defoliated and undefoliatedplants: 2.0±0.1 µmol CO2 µmol–1 C2H4;similarly, there was no change in the efficiency of nitrogenasefunctioning as rate of N2 fixation increased with plant growthfrom 1 to 22 µmol N2 per plant h–1. Exposure of nodulated white clover root systems to a 10 percent acetylene gas mixture resulted in a sharp peak in rateof ethylene production after 1.5–2.5 min; subsequently, rate of ethylene production declined rapidly before stabilisingafter 0.5–1 h at a rate about 50 per cent of that initiallyobserved. Regression of ‘peak’ rate of ethyleneproduction on rate of N2 fixation indicated a value of 2.9 µmolC2H4 µmol–1 N2, for rates of N2 fixation between1 and 22 µmol N2 per plant h–1. The relationshipsbetween nitrogenase respiration, acetylene reduction rates andN2 fixation rates are discussed.
