Summary The lamina ganglionaris of the superposition eye of Cloeon dipterum is composed of separate optic cartridges arranged in a hexagonal pattern. Each optic cartridge consists of one central, radially branched monopolar cell (Li) surrounded by a crown of seven retinula cell terminals and two more unilaterally branched monopolar cells (La1/La2) situated close together outside the cartridge. Projections to neighbouring cartridges have not been observed. In most cases, synaptic contacts could be seen between a presynaptic retinula cell and more than two other postsynaptic profiles, which belong to monopolar cells or sometimes to glial cells.Seven retinula cell fibers of one ommatidium pass in a bundle through the basement membrane, run into their respective cartridges without changing orientation and terminate at approximately equal levels in the lamina. Long visual fibers with endings in the medulla are not visible in the superposition eye lamina, but are present in the lateral apposition eye. The relationship between the behaviour of the animal, optic mechanisms of the superposition eye and the structure of the lamina is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The superposition eye of the cockchafer, Melolontha melolontha, exhibits the typical features of many nocturnal and crepuscular scarabaeid beetles: the dioptric apparatus of each ommatidium consists of a thick corneal lens with a strong inner convexity attached to a crystalline cone, that is surrounded by two primary and 9–11 secondary pigment cells. The clear zone contains the unpigmented extensions of the secondary pigment cells, which surround the cell bodies of seven retinula (receptor) cells per ommatidium and a retinular tract formed by them. The seven-lobed fused rhabdoms are composed by the rhabdomeres of the receptor cells 1–7. The rhabdoms are optically separated from each other by a tracheal sheath around the retinulae. The orientation of the microvilli diverges in a fan-like fashion within each rhabdomere. The proximally situated retinula cell 8 does not form a rhabdomere. This standard form of ommatidium stands in contrast to another type of ommatidium found in the dorsal rim area of the eye. The dorsal rim ommatidia are characterized by the following anatomical specializations: (1) The corneal lenses are not clear but contain light-scattering, bubble-like inclusions. (2) The rhabdom length is increased approximately by a factor of two. (3) The rhabdoms have unlobed shapes. (4) Within each rhabdomere the microvilli are parallel to each other. The microvilli of receptor 1 are oriented 90° to those of receptors 2–7. (5) The tracheal sheaths around the retinulae are missing. These findings indicate that the photoreceptors of the dorsal rim area are strongly polarization sensitive and have large visual fields. In the dorsal rim ommatidia of other insects, functionally similar anatomical specializations have been found. In these species, the dorsal rim area of the eye was demonstrated to be the eye region that is responsible for the detection of polarized light. We suggest that the dorsal rim area of the cockchafer eye subserves the same function and that the beetles use the polarization pattern of the sky for orientation during their migrations.  相似文献

Summary Neuronal elements, i.e. first and second order neurons, of the first optic ganglion of three waterbugs, N. glauca, C. punctata and G. lacustris, are analyzed on the basis of light and electron microscopy.Eight retinula cell axons, leaving each ommatidium, disperse to different cartridges as they enter the laminar outer plexiform layer. Such a pattern of divergence is one of the conditions for neuronal superposition; it is observed for all three species of waterbugs. The manner in which the receptors of a single bundle of ommatidia split of within the lamina, whereby information from receptors up to three or five horizontal rows away can converge upon the same cartridge, differs among the species. Six of the eight axons of retinula cells R1-6, the short visual fibers end at different levels within the bilayered lamina, whereas the central pair of retinula cells R7/8, the long visual fibers, run directly through the lamina to a corresponding unit of the medulla. Four types of monopolar cells L1–L4 are classified; their branching patterns seem to be correlated to the splitting and termination of retinula cell axons. The topographical relationship and synaptic organization between retinula cell terminals and monopolar cells in the two laminar layers are identified by examination of serial ultrathin sections of single Golgi-stained neurons. An attempt is made to correlate some anatomical findings, especially the neuronal superposition, to results from physiological investigations on the hemipteran retina.  相似文献

We have studied the anatomy and optics of the eyes of a range of mosquito species from the wholly dark-active blood-feeding Anopheles gambiae to the diurnal plant-feeder Toxorhynchites brevipalpis. Consistent with studies by Satô in the 1950s, we find that dark-active and crepuscular species have short fused rhabdoms with a conical construction. This maximises the amount of light the rhabdoms receive from the almost hemispherical wide-aperture lenses. Toxorhynchites, on the other hand, has long narrow rhabdomeres that are separated from each other over their entire length, and so resemble the open rhabdoms of advanced flies (Brachycera and Cyclorrhapha). These findings are confirmed by studies of the pseudopupil, whose form indicates the layout of the rhabdomere tips in the focal plane of each ommatidial lens. In anopheline species the pseudopupil is a single undivided ellipse, indicating a fused rhabdom structure, whereas in Toxorhynchites there is a ring of six outer elements surrounding a central one. This means that each rhabdomere views a separate direction in space, and our measurements indicate that, as in higher Diptera, adjacent rhabdomeres share their fields of view with one of the rhabdomeres in the immediately adjacent ommatidia. This in turn means that in the diurnal type of mosquito eye there is a basis for neural superposition, but the fused construction of anopheline rhabdoms precludes this. The Aedes species studied were similar to Anopheles but with lenses of less extreme aperture, and Sabethes cyaneus, a diurnal blood-feeder, was intermediate in structure, with fused conical rhabdoms in the centre of the eye and unfused rhabdomeres around the periphery.  相似文献

Observations of the infrared deep pseudopupil, optical determinations of the corneal nodal point, and histological methods were used to relate the visual fields of individual rhabdomeres to the array of ommatidial optical axes in four insects with open rhabdoms: the tenebrionid beetle Zophobas morio, the earwig Forficula auricularia, the crane fly Tipula pruinosa, and the backswimmer Notonecta glauca. The open rhabdoms of all four species have a central pair of rhabdomeres surrounded by six peripheral rhabdomeres. At night, a distal pigment aperture is fully open and the rhabdom receives light over an angle approximately six times the interommatidial angle. Different rhabdomeres within the same ommatidium do not share the same visual axis, and the visual fields of the peripheral rhabdomeres overlap the optical axes of several near-by ommatidia. During the day, the pigment aperture is considerably smaller, and all rhabdomeres share the same visual field of about two interommatidial angles, or less, depending on the degree of light adaptation. The pigment aperture serves two functions: (1) it allows the circadian rhythm to switch between the night and day sampling patterns, and (2) it works as a light driven pupil during the day.Theoretical considerations suggest that, in the night eye, the peripheral retinula cells are involved in neural pooling in the lamina, with asymmetric pooling fields matching the visual fields of the rhabdomeres. Such a system provides high sensitivity for nocturnal vision, and the open rhabdom has the potential of feeding information into parallel spatial channels with different tradeoffs between resolution and sensitivity. Modification of this operational principle to suit a strictly diurnal life, makes the contractile pigment aperture superfluous, and decreasing angular sensitivities together with decreasing pooling fields lead to a neural superposition eye.Abbreviations DPP deep pseudopupil - LMC large monopolar cell  相似文献

Six neural elements, viz., retinular axons, a giant monopolar axon, straight descending processes (type I), lamina monopolar axons (type II), processes containing clusters of dense-core vesicles (type III), and processes coursing in various directions with varicosities (type IV), have been identified at the ultrastructural level in the lamina neuropil of the larval tiger beetle Cicindela chinensis. Retinular axons make presynaptic contact with all other types of processes. Type I and II processes possess many pre-and postsynaptic loci. Type II processes presumably constitute retinotopic afferent pathways. It remains uncertain whether type I processes are lamina monopolar axons or long retinular axons extending to the medullar neuropil. Type III processes may be efferent neurons or branches of afferent neurons contributing to local circuits. A giant monopolar axon extends many branches throughout the lamina neuropil; these branches are postsynaptic to retinular axons, and may be nonretinotopic and afferent. Type IV processes course obliquely in the neuropil, being postsynaptic to retinular axons, and presynaptic to type I processes.  相似文献

Summary The gross structure and neuronal elements of the first optic ganglion of two crabs, Scylla serrata and Leptograpsus variegatus, are described on the basis of Golgi (selective silver) and reduced silver preparations. Of the eight retinula cells of each ommatidium, seven end within the lamina, while the eighth cell sends a long fibre to the external medulla. Five types of monopolar neurons are described, three types of large tangential fibres, and one fibre which may be centrifugal. The marked stratification of the lamina is produced by several features. The main synaptic region, the plexiform layer, is divided by a band of tangential fibres; the short retinula fibres end at two levels in the plexiform layer; and two types of monopolar cells have arborisations confined to the distal or proximal parts of the plexiform layer. The information presently available concerning the retina-lamina projection in Crustacea is examined. Some of the implications of retina and lamina structure are discussed in conjunction with what is known about their electrophysiology.  相似文献

Summary The arrangement of first and second order neurons in an optic cartridge and the topographical relationships of the second order neurons within a cartridge and to groups of surrounding cartridges have been analyzed in the visual system of the bee, Apis mellifera, from light and electron microscope studies on Golgi preparations. At the level of the monopolar cell body layer, the nine retinula cell fibres of each ommatidium, the six short visual fibres arranged in a circle surrounding the three long visual fibres, become cartridges as a consequence of the appearance of the second order neurons (L-fibres) which join the R-fibre bundles. Two of the four different L-fibre types, L-1 and L-2, remain together in the centre of the cartridge throughout the lamina. The axons of the L-3 and L-4 fibres, however, have their position integrated into the circle formed by the endings of the short visual fibres. On the basis of further examination of light and especially electron microscopical Golgi material, the different L-fibres can be classified into four types which appear in each cartridge. The clear stratification in the first synaptic region (A, B and C) seems to be the best criterion for a morphological classification since such a classification necessarily also includes a functional basis. According to a naming system based on the position of the lateral processes, L-fibres with side branches in strata A, B and C are called L-1 fibres. Fibres with lateral processes in strata A and B are L-2 fibres; monopolar cell fibres with branches only in the second stratum B are L-fibres of type 3; and all monopolar cells with branches only in stratum C are called L-4 fibres. In addition to the branching pattern covering only the parent cartridge, two of the four fibre types (L-2 and L-4) have long collaterals reaching neighbouring cartridges: L-2 in stratum A and L-4 in stratum C. These collaterals presumably form a substrate for lateral interactions.  相似文献

Seven of the photoreceptor axons of each ommatidium in the compound eye of the prawn Pandalus borealis end in two layers in the optic lamina. They have expanded terminals in the optic cartridges; four distally and three proximally in each cartridge. All seven receptor terminals are presynaptic to one lamina monopolar neuron (M2) of the cartridge. This monopolar neuron is situated centrally in the cartridge and has a thick axis fibre with radially arranged branches, and its axon has a terminal in medulla externa. At the synapses, an arrowlike presynaptic bar is found facing three postsynaptic profiles. The receptor terminals have several characteristics. Their cytoplasm is filled with empty and coated vesicles, and contains numeorus large mitochondria and clusters of tubular elements. There is a longitudinally arranged fascicle of filaments partly surrounded by electron-dense amorphous material in the terminals. Centrally towards M2, numerous neural spines invaginate into the terminal. Along the entire terminal periphery, there are invaginations from the glial cells. The terminals also form small knoblike protrusions extending into the surrounding glial cells.  相似文献

The visual system of the larval tiger beetle (Cicindela chinensis) consists of six (two large, two mediumsized, and two small) stemmata on either side of the head, and an underlying neuropil mass. Each stemma exhibits a corneal lens and an underlying rhabdom layer. Retinular cells extend single proximal axons into the neuropil mass. The neuropil mass has a flattened heart-shape, and consists of two juxtaposed identical structures, each being a neuropil complex of each of the two large stemmata. The complex consists of lamina and medulla neuropils. Most retinular axons terminate in the lamina neuropil. Axons of two types of lamina monopolar neurons descend parallel to each other into the lamina neuropil. Moreover, each lamina neuropil contains a single giant monopolar neuron. Possible centrifugal processes and tangential neurons also occur. Lamina monopolar axons descend straight into the medulla neuropil. Medulla neurons spread fan-shaped dendrites distally in the medulla neuropil and send single axons toward the protocerebrum. These data are discussed with respecct to the unique visual behavior of this larva and in comparison with other insect visual systems.  相似文献

The Anopheles gambiae genome project yielded almost complete sequences for the autosomes and for a large part of the X chromosome, however, no information for the Y chromosome was obtained. Yet, by design, fragmented Y chromosome sequences should be present in the resulting assembly. Here we report the search for Anopheles Y chromosome genes using a strategy successfully applied for identification of Y genes in Drosophila. A complete set of the unmapped scaffolds was targeted in a broad TBLASTN search using both A. gambiae predicted genes and all proteins from nr database as query sequences. After filtering of the BLAST report, we selected 181 scaffolds possibly containing fragments of Y chromosome genes to experimentally test their Y-linkage. Surprisingly, none of the tested sequences appeared to originate from the Y chromosome. Several factors could account for the failure to detect Y genes, including their different organization in A. gambiae compared to Drosophila and the suboptimal quality of the assembly and annotation of the Anopheles genome. Regardless of the cause, our results illuminate problems associated with the genome analysis of outbred organisms.  相似文献

The number of Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles arabiensis females that used each of the 33 sampled breeding sites in west Kenya was estimated by microsatellite markers and related statistics to test the hypothesis that conspecific females share aquatic sites. Totally, 166 An. gambiae and 168 An. arabiensis larvae were identified and were genotyped. The mean number of larvae per breeding site was 8.3 for An. gambiae and 8.4 for An. arabiensis. The likelihood method estimated that, for An. gambiae, the mean number of females that would have laid eggs per breeding site was 5.2 and ranged from 2 to 9, and for An. arabiensis, the mean was 5.0 with a range of 2–10. The clustering method estimated that the mean number of females laying eggs per breeding site was 6.8 for An. gambiae. The results provide molecular evidence that females of one or both species share breeding sites.  相似文献

Summary In the crab, Leptograpsus variegatus, the projection of retinula cell axons to the lamina was investigated by tracing them through a series of semi-thin sections. Forty-four such axons were traced from a single group of ommatidia as far as the distal layers of the lamina. The eight receptor axons of one ommatidium project to a single lamina cartridge. Therefore, because the crab has a fused rhabdom, angular information is conserved in vision, and the outside world is projected literally onto the lamina, just as it is in the standard non-dipteran pattern of insects. The belief of previous workers that other decapod eyes show neural superposition was an inference based primarily on the patterns of penetration of the basement membrane by receptor axons, and on degeneration experiments. This evidence is reviewed, shown to be inadequate and discussed in the light of the projection now demonstrated for Leptograpsus.  相似文献

Drones (Apis mellifera ) were attracted to a lure scented with queen pheromone suspended at a height of 11–18m. An unscented test object, usually a black sphere, was lowered on a vertical string at a horizontal distance of 50 cm or 103 cm from the scented lure. Drones often made a rapid, direct, displacement from the scented lure to the test object. Drones responded to objects that subtended an angle as small as 0.41° which is less than the acceptance angle of a single ommatidium. We calculate that a drone can respond to a stimulus corresponding to a reduction in the light incident on one ommatidium at a time of 8%; the brevity of the stimulus on each ommatidium would seem to be a factor in the design of the eye.  相似文献

Summary The apposition eyes of the corduliid dragonfly Hemicordulia tau are each divided by pigment colour, facet size and facet arrangement into three regions: dorsal, ventral, and a posterior larval strip. Each ommatidium has two primary pigment cells, twenty-five secondary pigment cells, and eight receptor cells, all surrounded by tracheae which probably prevent light passing between ommatidia, and reduce the weight of the eye. Electron microscopy reveals that the receptor cells are of two types: small vestigial cells making virtually no contribution to the rhabdom, and full-size typical cells. The ventral ommatidia have a distal typical cell (oriented either horizontally or vertically), four medial typical cells, two proximal typical cells and one full-length vestigial cell. The dorsal ommatidia have only four full-length typical cells, and one distal and three vestigial full-length cells. The cross-section of dorsal rhabdoms is small and circular distally, but expands to a large three-pointed star medially and proximally. The tiered receptor arrangement in the ventral ommatidia is typical of other Odonata but the dorsal structure has not been fully described in other species. Specialised dorsal eye regions are typical of insects that detect others against the sky.  相似文献

Panorpa larvae possess stemmata (lateral ocelli), which have the structure of compound eyes, and stemma lamina and stemma medulla neuropils. A distinct lobula neuropil is lacking. The stemma neuropils have a columnar organization. They contain lamina monopolar cells, and both short and long visual fibers. All the identified larval monopolar neurons have radially arranged dendrites along the entire depth of the lamina neuropil and a single terminal arborization within the medulla (L1/L2-type). The terminals of visual fibers have short spiny lateral projections. Long fibers possess en passant synapses within the lamina. The same principles of organization of first and second order visual neuropils are found in Panorpa imagines. In contrast to the larvae, a lobula neuropil is present. Adults have monopolar cells of the L1-type that are similar to the L1-neurons found in Diptera. The columnar organization, the presence of short and long visual fibers, and lamina monopolar neurons are thus features common to both visual systems, viz., the larval (stemmata) and the imaginal (compound eyes).  相似文献

The development of the cephalothecoid peridium of Aporothielavia leptoderma was examined using light and electron microscopy. Early stages in ascoma initiation were consistent with previous reports for other species in the Chaetomiaceae. However, as young cleistothecia increased in size, clusters of peridial cells in the outer textura angularis elongated in a radial pattern around a central cell or cell cluster to form rosettes of relatively thick-walled segments that marked the central areas of incipient cephalothecoid plates. The external flank along median portions of the radial cells became thin walled and swelled outwards so that each plate became concave and was separated from adjacent plates by a more or less circular to polygonal ridge of knuckle-shaped swellings. When dry, mature peridia split apart along some of the ridges demarcating individual plates but an internal mechanism for liberating ascospores from the confines of the ascoma was not observed. Physical disturbance of mature cleistothecia by beetles, when enclosed together in a Petri dish, shattered the peridia, liberating the ascospores. Smaller insects were unable to cause disarticulation of the cephalothecoid plates. Because of the presence of an apical germ pore in the ascospores and morphological similarity to Chaetomidium arxii, the new combination Chaetomidium leptoderma (syn. Thielavia leptoderma) comb. nov. is proposed.  相似文献

We used ITS and trnL sequence data, analyzed separately and combined by MP, to explore species relationships and concepts in Trema (Celtidaceae), a pantropical genus of pioneer trees. Whether Trema is monophyletic or includes Parasponia is still unresolved. Three clades within Trema received moderate to high support, one from the New World and two from the Old World, but their relationships were not resolved. In the New World, specimens of T. micrantha formed two groups consistent with endocarp morphology. Group I, with smaller brown endocarps, is a highly supported clade sister to T. lamarckiana. Group II, with larger black endocarps, is poorly resolved with several subclades, including the highly supported T. integerrima clade. Both Old World clades contain Asian and African species, with three or more species in each region. Trema orientalis is not monophyletic: specimens from Africa formed a highly supported clade sister to T. africana, while those from Asia were sister to T. aspera from Australia.  相似文献
