Grooming was observed in 11 wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) in Mahale, Tanzania, and the number of removal and stroke movements and grooming duration were recorded. Removal movements were more frequent during social grooming than during self-grooming. Chimpanzees used one or both hands for grooming, and grooming using both hands was more efficient for removing small objects. Due to physical constraints, self-grooming of the arms was almost always done using only one hand. The removal movement frequency during arm grooming was lower when self-grooming than when grooming another. They were more likely to use both hands during grooming another than during self-grooming, and fewer physical constraints during social grooming enabled a higher level of hygienic grooming.  相似文献

A hormonal basis for sex differences in the self-grooming of rats   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The self-grooming behavior of prepubescent male and female rats is described. Sex differences were observed in components of grooming addressed to the genitals, but not in other aspects of grooming. A hormonal basis for the sex difference was examined in two experiments. When females were injected with testosterone propionate (TP) on the day of birth, their subsequent grooming was found to be no different from that of control-treated females. However, males and females gonadectomized at weaning and treated daily with TP each performed significantly more genital self-grooming than oil-treated controls. There were no sex differences in gonadectomized, oil-treated rats, and sex differences in response to TP were limited to greater responsiveness of females to a 50-micrograms, but not 200-micrograms, TP dose. These results lead to the conclusion that sex differences in self-grooming can be accounted for primarily by differences in testosterone availability during the peripubertal period.  相似文献

Social grooming in primates is a complex behavior in which monkeys stroke, pick, or otherwise manipulate a companion’s body surface. While grooming has been associated with important social functions, researchers who have examined its physical characteristics, such as body site preferences, have focused on its role in skin care and ectoparasite removal. Whether the form of social grooming is constrained primarily by utilitarian or social functions was empirically tested by directly comparing this behavior with self-grooming, which was assumed to have primarily utilitarian functions. Predictions made concerning social grooming, based on a comparison with self-grooming, were tested by examining site preferences, duration of grooming (overall and to specific body sites), and method of grooming (stroking, picking, or a combination of the two) in rhesus monkeys. None of these predictions was verified. The physical characteristics of social grooming could not be predicted from the way an animal groomed itself. There was no relationship between site preferences in these two types of grooming. Animals groomed others for longer periods of time than they groomed themselves, both overall and when grooming specific sites. The methods these animals used differed markedly in self-and social grooming: they primarily picked at their own hair or skin but, when grooming others, varied their technique across sites, stroking the hair where it was thickest and picking where the hair was sparse. These results suggest that utilitarian functions are not the most important factors constraining the form of social grooming.  相似文献

CRF-induced excessive grooming behavior in rats and mice   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
We studied the grooming response to lateral ventricle injection of CRF in both rats and mice under similar conditions. One microgram of CRF ICV induced a pronounced increase (3- to 4-fold) in the frequency of self-grooming in rats, but only a much smaller (less than 20%) increase in mice. The minimum effective dose of CRF in rats was 300 ng. Although ACTH1-24 induced less grooming in mice than in rats, the difference in potency did not appear to be sufficient to explain the differences between the effectiveness of CRF in the two species. Whereas ACTH increased all types of grooming scored. CRF increased all forms of grooming except flank scratching with the hind limb. The major effect of CRF was to increase the number of episodes of grooming, whereas ACTH1-24 tended to prolong the length of individual episodes. The excessive grooming induced by ICV CRF was not affected by prior treatment with dexamethasone, suggesting that the increased grooming was not due to secondary release of ACTH from the pituitary. Nevertheless, ICV CRF might induce grooming by releasing MSH/ACTH from cerebral storage sites. CRF-induced grooming, like ACTH-induced grooming, was inhibited by naloxone pretreatment. Despite the small qualitative differences, CRF-induced grooming could be due to secondary release of ACTH.  相似文献

One family group of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) maintained in captivity under natural environmental conditions (Natal, Brazil, 05°46'S, 35°12'W) was observed by focal sampling at two non-consecutive days per week during two non-consecutive pregnancies (pregnancy 1: the last 8 fortnights before parturition; pregnancy 2: the last 5 ones) and after parturition (4 fortnights for both). The hourly percentiles of the duration of self-grooming and allogrooming interactions of the reproductive pair were submitted to Cosinor analysis for the 24-h period (p ≤ 0.05). The reproductive female's progesterone was monitored by fecal collection twice a week between 7:00 h to 9:00 h. Levels of progesterone were determined by ELISA method. During pregnancy 1, all interactions of the reproductive pair showed a 24-h statistically significant period. However, after parturition this periodicity is not present in some behaviors of the reproductive male. This animal presents the 24-h periodicity only toward to the reproductive female, the subadult son and to the newborns. Hormonal levels of the reproductive female showed isolated increases above 100 ng/g at the second and third fortnight after parturition, but did not characterize ovulation. Between pregnancy 1 and 2, the family was increased by the birth of four animals. During pregnancy 2, a statistically significant 24-h period was find only in self-grooming of the reproductive male and female, and in the interactions between the reproductive pair. Also, in the interactions of the reproductive male with only one of the juvenile son. After parturition the reproductive female ovulated at the second fortnight and became pregnant again. At this time, those interactions still have a 24-h period, except in grooming directed to the juvenile son by the reproductive male. As in the first post-partum, grooming directed to the newborns showed statistically significant 24-h period. These results suggest that the reproductive pair performs 24-h rhythmic grooming interactions only with some animals, supposed to be the preferential grooming partners. Furthermore, the temporal grooming expression in common marmosets may be affected by the reproductive condition (progesterone levels) of the reproductive female, by the care of newborn after parturition and the group size.  相似文献

Rats frequently emit grooming actions in a highly stereotyped, syntactic chain in which three distinct phases of facially directed forearm movements are sequentially emitted in a rule-governed pattern and followed by body-directed licking. The present study evaluated the effects of the full dopamine D1 agonist, SKF 81297, and the partial dopamine D1 agonist, SKF 38393, on the duration of individual phases of stereotyped grooming chains. We found that systemic administration of SKF 81297 significantly shortened grooming chain duration. An examination of the fine temporal structure of syntactic grooming chain actions showed that duration changes were correlated with decreased numbers of actions in phases I and IV of the chain. Phases II and III were not changed in duration, although there were some structural distortions introduced. The partial D1 agonist, SKF 38393, had no effect on duration or number of component actions in the grooming chain. Based on these results, we hypothesize that the timing of syntactic grooming phase transitions may involve a D1-mediated internal clock process that is altered by full D1 agonist activation. By this model, SKF 81297 increases the speed of the clock used for the temporal control of grooming actions, and thus shortens phase durations.  相似文献

Structural rules for grooming are examined in the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus). Two types of bouts are found: short bouts with no predictable temporal pattern and long bouts with some degree of periodic occurrence. Transitions in long bouts are mostly based on anatomical proximity. Grooming movements cluster together according to function and body region. Evidence for hierarchical organization obtained by clustering is confirmed by the proportion of occurrence of movements in long and short bouts. Individual birds are similar enough on measures of occurrence, transition and hierarchica structure for pooling of subjects to be justified; this suggests that the organizational rules found here are to a large extent species-typical.  相似文献

Grooming behaviour is the most common innate behaviour in animals. In rodents, it consists of sequences of movements organized in four phases, executed symmetrically on both sides of the animal and creating a syntactic chain of behavioural events. The grooming syntax can be altered by stress and novelty, as well as by several mutations and brain lesions. Grooming behaviour is known to be affected by alterations of the dopamine system, including dopamine receptor modulation, dopamine alteration in genetically modified animals, and after brain lesion. While a lot is known about the initiation and syntactic modifications of this refined sequence of movements, effects of unilateral lesion of dopamine neurons are unclear particularly regarding the symmetry of syntactic chains. In the present work we studied grooming in mice unilaterally lesioned in the medial forebrain bundle by 6-hydroxydopamine. We found a reduction in completion of grooming bouts, associated with reduction in number of transitions between grooming phases. The data also revealed the development of asymmetry in grooming behaviour, with reduced tendency to groom the contralateral side to the lesion. Symmetry was recovered following treatment with L-DOPA. Thus, the present work shows that unilateral lesion of dopamine neurons reduces self-grooming behaviour by affecting duration and numbers of events. It produces premature discontinuation of grooming chains but the sequence syntax remains correct. This deficient grooming could be considered as an intrinsic symptom of Parkinson’s disease in animal models and could present some similarities with abnormalities of motor movement sequencing seen in patients. Our study also suggests grooming analysis as an additional method to screen parkinsonism in animal models.  相似文献

The interacting effects of thyroid hormone, age, and duration of starvation on the enzyme and liver lipid responses of BHE rats to starvation-refeeding were studied. Rats were starved for 2, 4, or 7 days and refed a 65% glucose diet for 2 days. The rats were either 150 or 420 days of age and injected daily with either saline or 10 micrograms thyroxine/100 g body weight. Neither age nor duration of starvation affected the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase or malic enzyme activity or liver lipid response to starvation-refeeding. However, thyroxine treatment potentiated the response to starvation-refeeding in the 420-day-old rats when the duration of starvation increased from 2 to 7 days.  相似文献

Summary In starlings, the breeding season is terminated by a state of photorefractoriness. Birds remain completely reproductively inactive as long as long days are maintained, and only exposure to short days restores photosensitivity. Two experiments investigated the role of different doses of thyroxine in the development of photosensitivity in castrated starlings. First, photorefractory castrated male starlings were moved from long (18L:6D) to short (8L:16D) days, and received in the drinking water either 1 or 10 mg · 1-1 thyroxine for the first 7 weeks of a 14-week observation period. Control birds regained photosensitivity after 5 weeks of short days, as signaled by a spontaneous increase in plasma LH, whereas the return to photosensitivity was delayed until weeks 7 and 9 in the 1- and 10-mg · 1-1 thyroxine-treated birds, respectively. In the second experiment, the effect of different doses of thyroxine was explored at the level of the hypothalamic Gn-RH neurosecretory neurones. The acquisition of photosensitivity in control birds transferred from long to short days was characterized by a marked increase in hypothalamic Gn-RH content (while long-day controls maintained low Gn-RH content). Doses of 10 and 20 mg · 1-1 of thyroxine completely prevented the return to photosensitivity, as seen through changes in either plasma LH concentrations or hypothalamic Gn-RH content, while a dose of 1 mg · 1-1 allowed a partial recovery of photosensitivity, as hypothalamic Gn-RH content increased to an intermediate level and the spontaneous rise in plasma LH occurred slowly but steadily.Abbreviations Gn-RH gonadotrophin-releasing hormone - LH luteinizing hormone - LHRH-I luteinizing hormone releasing hormone  相似文献

Natural rodent grooming and other instinctive behavior serves as a natural model of complex movement sequences. Rodent grooming has syntactic (rule-driven) sequences and more random movement patterns. Both incorporate the same movements--only the serial structure differs. Recordings of neural activity in the dorsolateral striatum and the substantia nigra pars reticulata indicate preferential activation during syntactic sequences over more random sequences. Neurons that are responsive during syntactic grooming sequences are often unresponsive or have reverse activation profiles during kinematically similar movements that occur in flexible or random grooming sequences. Few neurons could be categorized as strictly movement related--instead they were activated only in the context of particular sequential patterns of movements. Particular sequential patterns included "syntactic chain" grooming sequences of paw, head, and body movements and also "warm-up" sequences, which consist of head and body/limb movements that precede locomotion after a period of quiet resting (Golani 1992). Activation during warm-up was less intense and less frequent than during grooming sequences, but both sequences activated neurons above baseline levels, and the same neurons sometimes responded to both sequences. The fact that striatal neurons code 2 natural sequences which are made up of different constituent movements suggests that the basal ganglia may have a generalized role in sequence control. The basal ganglia are modulated by the context of the sequence and may play an executive function in the complex natural patterns of sequenced behaviour.  相似文献

Maternal behavior of Koltushi High- and Low-avoidance (KHA and KLA) rats strains was assessed over the prewealing period (days 6-21). Ten litters of each strain were observed during the light phase of the light/dark cycle. In a series of experiments, rat pups were taken from the maternal nest and placed into the opposite corner of the cage. The following parameters of the maternal behavior were recorded: the latency of the first contact with the pups, pup licking, latency of carrying/retrieval of the first pup back to the nest, time of returning to the nest of the whole litter, and mother's spontaneous behavior (grooming and locomotion time) over the course of 10 min of observation. KLA mothers stayed with their pups and took care of them more frequently than KHA mothers during the light phase of the circadian cycle. Time of self-grooming was significantly higher in KHA rats. The highest levels of self-grooming of mothers was registered on the first day of testing. The latency of the first coming to pups after their removal from the nest was lower in KHA rats, but they needed more time to returned all pups to the nest. The experimental evidence suggests that the KHA but not KLA rats with the active coping style and higher stress reactivity display disorders in maternal behavior in a novel situation.  相似文献

Motility assessment before birth can be used to evaluate the integrity of the nervous system. Sideways bending (SB) of head and/or rump, the earliest embryonic motility in both humans and guinea pigs, can be visualized sonographically. We know from other species that early embryonic motility is cyclic. This study explores the distribution of SB-to-SB intervals in human and guinea pig embryos before the appearance of more complex movements such as general movements. We hypothesized that the activity in both species is cyclic. We made 15-min sonographic recordings of SBs between 5 weeks and 0 days (5wk0d) and 7wk0d conceptional age (CA) in 18 human embryos of uncomplicated IVF pregnancies (term 38 weeks) and in 20 guinea pig embryos between 3wk4d and 4wk0d CA (term 9 weeks). SB-to-SB interval durations were categorized as long (≥10 s) or short (<10 s) intervals. For human embryos, the median values for long and short intervals were 61 s (range, 10-165 s) and 3 s (range, 1-9 s) respectively; for guinea pigs 38 s (range, 10-288 s) and 5 s (range, 1-9 s), respectively. During development, the duration of long intervals decreased while the number of short intervals increased for both species. The earliest embryonic motility in the human and guinea pig is performed cyclically with distinct developmental milestones. The resemblance of their interval development offers promising possibilities to use the guinea pig as a noninvasive animal model of external influences on motor and neural development.  相似文献

To prevent epidemics, insect societies have evolved collective disease defences that are highly effective at curing exposed individuals and limiting disease transmission to healthy group members. Grooming is an important sanitary behaviour—either performed towards oneself (self-grooming) or towards others (allogrooming)—to remove infectious agents from the body surface of exposed individuals, but at the risk of disease contraction by the groomer. We use garden ants (Lasius neglectus) and the fungal pathogen Metarhizium as a model system to study how pathogen presence affects self-grooming and allogrooming between exposed and healthy individuals. We develop an epidemiological SIS model to explore how experimentally observed grooming patterns affect disease spread within the colony, thereby providing a direct link between the expression and direction of sanitary behaviours, and their effects on colony-level epidemiology. We find that fungus-exposed ants increase self-grooming, while simultaneously decreasing allogrooming. This behavioural modulation seems universally adaptive and is predicted to contain disease spread in a great variety of host–pathogen systems. In contrast, allogrooming directed towards pathogen-exposed individuals might both increase and decrease disease risk. Our model reveals that the effect of allogrooming depends on the balance between pathogen infectiousness and efficiency of social host defences, which are likely to vary across host–pathogen systems.  相似文献

The present study was carried out on a Palearctic-Indian migratory species, the blackheaded bunting (Emberiza melanocephala), to understand the importance of photoperiodism and circannual rhythms in determining seasonality in changes in body mass and testis size in birds. An initial experiment determined the effects of duration and intensity of light on photoperiodic induction. The birds were exposed to different photoperiods (hours of light:hours of darkness; 11.5L:12.5D, 12L:12D, 12.5L:11.5D and 13L:11D) at the same (approximately 450 lux) light intensity, and to 13L:11D at different light intensities (50-, 100-, 400-, 800- and 1000-lux). The induction and subsequent regression of photoperiodic responses were dependent upon duration and intensity of the light period until these reached threshold. A second experiment investigated if an endogenous seasonal rhythm underlies photoperiodism in buntings. Birds maintained since February on a 8L: 16D photoperiod (a non-inductive short day length invariably used to ensure photosensitivity in photoperiodic species) were subjected periodically to 16L:8D (a long day length), one group every month from mid-March to mid-August. The magnitude of long day response in body mass and testes decreased as the duration of the short days progressed, but testicular response was restored in birds that were exposed to long days in July and August. The birds exposed simultaneously to short, long, and natural day lengths for 32 weeks underwent an induction-regression cycle under long days and natural day lengths, but not under short days in which a decrease in body mass occurred after about 20 weeks. The last experiment examined the importance of latitudinal migration on photoperiodism, by comparing the response to long days of three groups which included birds from populations those were held in the outdoor aviary for 1 or 2 years at 27 degrees N and those immediately arrived from their breeding grounds (approximately 40 degrees N). There was no difference in the photoperiodic induction among the three groups, indicating that neither experience to changing photoperiods during a migratory journey, nor to long photoperiods at breeding grounds, were critical for a subsequent response (initiation-termination-reinitiation) cycle. Taken together, these findings suggest that (1) the blackheaded bunting has its own endogenous timing program, which is regulated by the photoperiod, and (2) the photoperiodic programs of bunting are flexible enough to accommodate variations in the amplitude of environmental cycles. Thus, it appears that photoperiodism has evolved independently of the evolution of migration in this species.  相似文献

Summary Pharmacological doses of thyroxine are able to mimic the effects of long photoperiods in Japanese quail. In birds maintained on short daylengths thrice-weekly injections of 100 g thyroxine cause full testicular maturation at rates not greatly different from those seen if quail are exposed to long days. Thyroxine stimulates increases in the secretion of FSH and LH, in pituitary prolactin content and in the hypothalamic content of Gn-RH. The effects are dose-dependent. If female quail kept on short daylengths are given thyroxine their ovaries develop and they lay eggs. In castrated male quail on short days thyroxine causes a ten-fold increase in circulating LH within a week. Thyroxine injections are also capable of maintaining quail in a photorefractory state even when they are transferred to short daylengths. The results suggest that thyroxine mimics long days by acting high in the photoneuroendocrine system and does not simply act to facilitate hormone secretion per se. This is in line with growing evidence in mammals and birds that parts of the photoperiodic machinery are sensitive to thyroid hormones.Abbreviations Gn-RH gonadotropin releasing hormone - FSH follicle stimulating hormone - LH luteinizing hormone - T 4 thyroxine  相似文献

To explore the role of the thyroid gland in the control of seasonal reproduction in obligately photoperiodic American tree sparrows (Spizella arborea), the effects of (1) thyroxine administered in drinking water to thyroid-intact photosensitive or photorefractory birds, and (2) radiothyroidectomy before and after photostimulation and during photorefractoriness were examined. Chronic administration of pharmacological doses of thyroxine induced testicular growth and usually regression in initially photosensitive birds held on short or intermediate daylengths. Some thyroxine-treated birds with regressed testes were absolutely photorefractory, but most remained photosensitive. Exogenous thyroxine never induced testicular growth in photorefractory birds moved to short days, though it often impeded, and sometimes even blocked, the recovery of photosensitivity. Although circumstantial, these effects of exogenous thyroxine are consistent with an hypothesis that assigns to thyroid hormones two roles — one stimulatory and the other inhibitory — in the control of seasonal reproduction. Radiothyroidectomy before photostimulation inhibited (but did not prevent) photoinduced testicular growth, blocked spontaneous testicular regression, suppressed molt, and prevented photorefractoriness. Moreover, as demonstrated by testicular growth after thyroxine replacemnt therapy, radiothyroidectomy during photorefractoriness later restored photosensitivity despite continued photostimulation. Thus, euthyroidism is an essential condition for maximizing (but not for initiating) photoinduced testicular growth and for triggering and maintaining photorefractoriness in photostimulated tree sparrows. However, when performed early during photostimulation, radiothyroidectomy neither immediately induced nor later blocked spontaneous testicular regression. Thus, endogenous thyroid hormones and long days may interact during a critical period to program a sequence of physiological events that plays out as photorefractoriness in chronically photostimulated birds. Such an organizational event cannot be permanent, for seasonal reproduction is episodic and its control mechanism necessarily cyclic. Because thyroidectomy simulated the well-known restorative effect of short days (and exogenous thyroxine impeded it), short days may dissipate photorefractoriness by creating a milieu wherein thyroid hormones are deficient or inactive.Abbreviations ANOVA analysis of variance - bTSH bovine thyroid stimulating hormone - GnRH gonadotropin-releasing hormone - LH luteinizing hormone - nL: nD daily light: dark regime (n is duration in hours) - SEM standard error of the mean - SNK Student-Newman-Keuls test - T4 thyroxine - TH thyroid hormone - TR thyroid hormone receptor  相似文献

Social insects employ many types of defense mechanisms against parasites and pathogens because they face high risks from infections due to crowded living conditions with closely related nestmates. Grooming behavior, including self-grooming and allogrooming, can remove fungal spores on the cuticles of social insects and may be a behavioral defense mechanism to improve survivorship. Allogrooming between nestmates has been predicted to be especially important as a defense against ectoparasites. However, little is known about the plasticity of grooming behavior in susceptible environments. Here, we show that the ant Lasius japonicus increases the frequency of allogrooming rather than self-grooming to improve survivorship against the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae. We found that increasing fungal dosage and ant group size influenced the plasticity of grooming behavior. Additionally, the survival rate of the ants over 30 days improved with increased group size. Our results suggest that social insects opt for altruistic behavior to prevent the spread of diseases. This study illustrates how ants maintain colonies through grooming behavior in the presence of fungal spores.  相似文献
