The role of the mother in promoting infant independence, reflected in the time spent out of contact with her by the infant, was addressed with a simple correlational approach to scores of time out of contact (Off) and frequencies of acts of maternal rejection and restriction through the infants’ first 16 weeks of life. Correlations of the extents of age changes from week to week were also examined. Infants differed consistently in the times they spent off from their fourth through their eighth weeks, while rates of maternal restriction and rejection were consistent from week 4 until at least week 8 in both sexes and from week 2 in females. The correlations were consistent with the view that time off was set at its week-4 and possibly later levels by maternal rejection, while some further changes in time off, resulting in a loss of consistency from week to week, reflected the extents to which mothers of daughters decreased their restrictive behavior. Weeks in which individual differences in maternal restriction and rejection were correlated with differences in time spent off were generally weeks in which changes in group means of these mean measures were correlated. In daughters, age changes of individual dyad’s scores of time off and maternal rejection were correlated between week 2 and week 4, supporting the view that in these early weeks age changes and individual differences were produced by the same processes. Findings from comparative and experimental studies, and the limitations of correlational approaches now available, are discussed.  相似文献

To assess the pattern of infant carrying across time and family members, we counted which animals in 13 well-established family groups of captive-bred marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) carried neonates during the first 8 weeks of life. The neonates were carried almost continuously for the first 3 weeks and then spent progressively more time independently. The mother did most of the carrying for the first 2 weeks, her contribution rising from day 1 to day 3 and declining thereafter. The contribution of the father was high on day 1, declined during the first week, and then rose to a peak in the fourth week. The contribution of the siblings rose sharply during the first week and declined thereafter. There was no overall difference in amount of infant carrying by each parent. The contribution of each sibling was small although in these large families the total contribution by siblings was large. These data may differ from previous observations because the breeding pairs were very well established, the families were large, and all except the youngest animals were very experienced in rearing and carrying. These data emphasise the group-dynamic nature of infant carrying in a primate species.  相似文献

Changes in the yield and chemical composition of milk, together with those in the nipple preferences and suckling behavior of infants, were followed in three lactating Japanese monkeys rearing single infants under laboratory conditions at monthly intervals for six months after their paturition. Milk accumulating in the mammary glands during a 4-hr separation of the infant was collected by milking under anesthesia with the aid of a physiological dose of oxytocin. The stage of full lactation appeared to last for about two or three months after parturition. The milk at this stage contained 14.0% of total solids, 4.2% of lipids, 1.6% of proteins, and 6.2% of lactose, and the concentrations of Na, Cl, and K in the milk water were 7.4, 15.1, and 5.9 mM, respectively. From the 9th or 13th week of lactation onwards, according to the individual, the milk composition changed appreciably and the time during which the young left hold of the mother's nipple also increased. The weaning of young in the Japanese monkey appears to begin during the 3rd or 4th month of age. The milk production then wanes and almost ceases by the end of the 6th month. The nipple preference of the young was generally established completely by the 3rd, or the 8th at latest, week of age. However, no difference in either the yield or composition of the milk secreted was found between the mammary glands of the preferred and non-preferred sides. Without regard to the apparent nipple preference, infants seem to ingest milk from the mother's breasts of both sides. Accurate estimation of the rate of milk production could not be achieved, but the rate was expected to be 150–200 g/day at the height of lactation based on the relation between the mother's body weight and the milk production rates of other primate species. A disparity was noted between the observed and estimated values for the milk yield, and a diurnal fluctuation in the milk secretion of the Japanese monkey was inferred. This study was conducted through the official system of the Primate Research Institute, Kyoto University, for cooperative research work with other institutions.  相似文献

Time patterns of activity-rest rhythms during and after pregnancy are increasingly recognised as important factors for the well-being and health of young families. This longitudinal study examined activity-rest patterns of couples during late pregnancy and subsequently the alterations in the periodic structure of parental and neonatal time patterns during the first four months after birth. Part I concentrates on the effects of late pregnancy and birth to the mother's rest-activity patterns and those of the father and, after birth, what time pattern the infant developed. Part II attempts to clarify how activity patterns of the entire family agree or disagree with each other and investigates how the infant synchronises with the environment that includes the process of parent-infant interaction. Activity data of, so far, seven families (father, mother and child) were continuously recorded using non-invasive Actiwatch units. Recordings of parental activity started at the beginning of the 37th week of gestation, and were continued in parallel with the infants' recordings in three series of three weeks each until four months after birth: 1st to 3rd week, 7th to 9th week and 13th to 15th week of life. In a standardised diary, record was kept of household routines, parental activities, type of feeding, initiation of sleep or waking up. Activity data of seven non-pregnant women were collected and used as a control. Irregular nocturnal activity epochs occurred frequently in pregnant women and were absent in non-pregnant women. Period lengthenings and shortenings of the circadian rhythms appeared in both parents from prepartum to postpartum. Activity at night increased from prepartum to postpartum in mothers and fathers. Three infants showed a marked circadian rhythm between day 3 and 14 after birth. All seven infants showed a predominant circadian rhythm between day 8 and 19 after birth. The onset of daytime activity of mothers and their infants corresponded well to each other. Postpartum frequency spectra of parents and child always had some ultradian components in common. Time patterns of activity-rest rhythms of couples and parents are shown to be altered during and after pregnancy and we suggest that the infants' adaptation to the environment begins during the first week that includes the process of mother-infant interaction.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Mosquito control evaluations of the granular formulation of 0.5% pyriproxyfen were undertaken in marshes and a pond in Busan during the period of July through September, 2001. In marsh condition where Culex pipiens pattens were predominantly breeding, the treatment of pyriproxyfen produced over an average of 95% mosquito larval reduction at a concentration of 0.05 mg/1 for the first 4 weeks in spite of heavy precipitation (total 274.4 mm) during the period. Reduction rates of 72.6% and 32.3% appeared in the 5th and 7th weeks probably due to heavy input of sewage and flood. However, the reduction rate increased again at the 8th week, showing a 94.5% reduction, probably because of the slow releasing of pyriproxyfen granular formulation. In the second treatment of pyriproxyfen, complete mortality was obtained at the 1st and 3rd weeks. Also, a satisfactory level of Cx. pipiens larval reduction of 96.6% was observed at the 4th week. In a pond assessment, the treatment of pyriproxyfen at a concentration of 0.05 mg/1 produced a complete reduction of Cx. pipiens pattens from the 1st week through the 4th week after treatment. In the second treatment, 100.0% reduction was obtained at the 1st and 2nd weeks in the same sites. The treatment resulted in 84.4% and 97.9% reduction of mosquitoes at the 3rd and 4th weeks, respectively.  相似文献

The effect of first contact of gilts with a mature boar at 23 or 28 weeks of age on their subsequent reproductive efficiency was studied over a 12-month period at a large intensive piggery in southern Australia. Following this contact, the gilts entered the mating shed at 29 weeks of age and were checked daily for oestrus, as assessed by the back-pressure test in the presence of the boar. Gilts that showed moderate or high responses were taken to a boar for mating. Sexual receptivity was then assessed by the time taken to “stand” after the first mount by the boar. Gilts that remained unmated at 35 weeks of age were culled, and their ovaries were examined.Of the 2660 gilts in the study, 2349 were mated and they had a farrowing rate of 88.2% with a mean litter size of 9.5 piglets, of which 0.7 piglets (7.4%) were born dead. The reproductive efficiency of the gilts following earlier contact with the boar was consistently higher than that of gilts exposed later. The mating rate of the week 23 gilts was greater than that of the week 28 gilts (70.1 vs 66.0%, P < 0.01), more appeared to show a high level of sexual receptivity (97.0 and 94.6%, N.S.) and fewer failed to mate when put to a boar (6.1 vs 9.5%, P < 0.01). The percentage of prepubertal gilts at 35 weeks of age was also lower (1.46 vs 3.03%, P < 0.01). The improved reproductive performance was estimated to be equivalent to 0.24 extra piglets born per gilt.  相似文献

The limb used to perform seven common activities was recorded during weekly observations of an infant orang-utan. For five of these behaviors, preferences were found that remained consistent in their direction, although there were week to week fluctuations in magnitude. Most notably, a right hand preference was found for nonfood reaching and a right hindlimb preference appeared for initiating locomotion. Although initially, food reaching was predominantly with the right hand, a shift toward preferential left hand use occurred during the final weeks of the study. Additionally, a left hand preference appeared when the infant touched either its body or head.  相似文献

The rate of elimination of heterologous albumin from the blood of chickens was found to vary considerably during the first week of age. The half-life obtained for 2-day-old chicks was 1.4 days while that found in birds between 1 and 6 weeks of age ranged from 0.8 to 1.1 days. The results are in agreement with previous observations that the onset of immunological activity of chickens occurs during the first week of age and that their full immunological competence inachieved between the 3rd and 4th weeks of age.  相似文献

The cellular immune response (MIF, E-rosette formation and changes in nucleolar morphology of lymphocytes) was followed as related to age and antigenic stimulation. MIF in healthy infants increased from the 2nd to the 12th week of life as compared with the first week, probably due to BCG vaccination. The total and active E-rosette formation did not change during the whole period of investigation. Ring-shaped nucleoli increased gradually from the second week of life. Active nucleoli increased up to the 4th week,i.e. after BCG vaccination and then slowly decreased. Micronucleoli being high in the first week, decreased during 24 weeks of life. After artificial colonization of the intestine the production of MIF was slightly lower in colonized infants than in controls from the 2nd to the 12th week. The other parameters followed were not influenced by colonization.  相似文献

A male Sichuan golden monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellanae) was born on July 24, 1986 to an adult pair on loan from the Chinese government. Physical and behavioral development of the infant, as well as the behavior of the parents, were recorded for the first 20 days of the infant's life. (On Day 21 the trio was returned to the Chongqing Zoo in the People's Republic of China.) The infant pelage was dark gray at birth but soon began changing to the orange-gold color typical of the adults. Forty hours of behavioral data were collected using a combination of scan sampling and all occurrences of selected behaviors techniques. The infant pushed against his mother and pulled toward objects in the enclosure beginning at 4 days of age. Time spent in these behaviors increased steadily and on Day 15 the infant broke contact with his mother for the first time. Mother-infant contact appeared to be maintained by both individuals mutually up to the infant's 10th day of the life. The percentage of time that the infant spent actively embracing his mother began to decline after that while the female continued to spend the majority of her time embracing the infant. During the first few days following the birth, the male always initiated and maintained proximity to the female and the infant. This “vigilant” behavior had declined somewhat by the end of the study.  相似文献

The characterization of cytokeratin (CK) in adult oral mucosa and developing teeth have been well documented in human. Cytokeratin distribution in developing oral mucosa has not yet been described. The aim of this study was to identify the expression of CK in human fetal tongue (week 10 to week 23) and to correlate the results with morphological maturation. Simple epithelial CK are expressed in all cell layers during the early stages, essentially in peridermal cells. From the 14th week, CK 18 is present only in the taste buds, making this polypeptide a reliable marker for this sensory organ. CK 4 and 13 are expressed from the 10th to the 23rd week by both ventral and dorsal lingual epithelia. Terminal differentiation keratins (CK 1, 2 and 10-11) can only be detected immunohistochemically at the 14th week in some cells on the external surface of some papillae. The number of these papillae and positive cells increase at the 19th and 23rd weeks. The terminal differentiation markers are expressed several weeks earlier than the formation of a well-distinguished keratinized layer.  相似文献

Although the growth of pheasants is an important issue, there are few publications providing information on body weight and morphometrics of pheasants at different ages. The aim of this study was to investigate body weight, tarsus length, wing length and wingspan in farmed pheasants aged 3-16 weeks. The study was carried out on 50 pheasants (31 females and 19 males). All one-day old birds were marked and kept until the 16th week of life. In the 3rd 8 h 12th and 16th weeks of life all pheasants were weighted and tarsus length, wing length and wingspan were measured. Male chicks appeared to be significantly heavier than females (P< or = 0.01) already in the third week of life. Also their wings were longer and their wingspan attained higher values (P < or = 0.05). Absolute gains of the majority of traits also differed between sexes (being larger in males) in all studied periods. Values of body weight, tarsus length and wingspan noted in the third week of life were significantly correlated with all later measurements. Thus body weight and some biometrical traits of pheasant chicks measured already at the 3rd week of life could be applied as predictors of future body weight and size.  相似文献

Previous studies on nonhuman primate maternal styles showed that variation in infant-directed behavior falls along two dimensions, traditionally labeled as protectiveness and rejection. We investigated maternal styles in rhesus (Macaca mulatta) and Japanese (M. fuscata) macaques living in analogous captive social groups, and correlated them with the levels of estrogen metabolites excreted in female feces during the perinatal period. We focally observed mother-infant pairs 3 hours per week during the first 12 weeks of infant life. We collected fecal samples twice a week from each mother, starting 4 weeks before delivery and ending 4 weeks after delivery. Three significant components were extracted by principal component analysis from 15 different infant directed behaviors, each reflecting a different aspect of mothering style: rejection is correlated with behavioral measures of maternal opposition to contact; protectiveness is correlated with maternal solicitude; and independence is correlated with time in contact, grooming and cradling. Levels of estrogen metabolites are significantly correlated to rejection but not to protectiveness or independence, indicating that, in nonhuman primates, individual endocrine changes related to maternal behavior might specifically affect the timing of contact interruption.  相似文献

This research assessed mother–infant relationships in rhesus and Japanese macaques living in analogous captive social groups, and monitored changes in the levels of excreted estrogen metabolites during the peripartum period. Each mother–infant pair was focally observed 3 h per week during the first 12 weeks of life of newborns. Fecal samples were collected twice a week from each mother, starting 4 weeks before delivery and ending 4 weeks after delivery. Infant-directed behaviors appeared to be consistently less protective/controlling and more rejecting in rhesus macaques than in Japanese macaques. Estrogen metabolite levels during the perinatal period were, on average, 3-fold higher in Japanese macaques and showed a sharp increase during the last weeks of pregnancy only in the Japanese macaque group. Considering the ecological and behavioral similarities between Japanese and rhesus macaques, the divergence between the two species in the onset and maintenance of maternal behavior was unexpected. This was possibly linked to the difference in the overall body size and life history, and to the striking divergence in estrogen metabolite variation during the peripartum period. Group size, social relationships, and average age of individuals in the two captive groups were not clearly involved in the recorded differences in maternal behavior. Electronic Publication  相似文献

Individual variation in infant caretaking behavior is prevalent among marmoset and tamarin monkeys. Although most group members participate in infant care, the timing and amount provided differs greatly. In this study, we quantified general trends in infant carrying behavior by using a longitudinal database that included 11 years of instantaneous scan observations following 80 births of cotton‐top tamarins. Using detailed focal observations on a subset of the same families (10 births) we identified influences that affected expression of infant care at the group and individual levels. Fathers were the primary carriers and paternal carry time gradually decreased with increasing infant age. Paternal carry time also decreased significantly with an increasing number of older sibling helpers. Most fathers began to carry on the first day postpartum. However, we report circumstances in which fathers delayed carrying until almost a month postpartum. Fathers retrieved infants the most, although adult brothers' rates of retrievals peaked and surpassed fathers' rates during week 4 postpartum. Fathers delayed rejection of infants until week 4, whereas mothers rejected infants immediately and throughout the eight weeks. Nonetheless, infants climbed onto their mothers more than onto any other family member. Mothers showed a high initial investment in carrying during the first two weeks, decreasing quickly thereafter. Maternal contributions to infant carrying remained low and relatively consistent regardless of group size. However, mothers dramatically increased their infant carrying behavior in families in which fathers were absent. Older siblings cared for infants more than did younger siblings, and brothers retrieved and carried infants more than did sisters. Individual expression of infant care changed to accommodate infant needs and changed according to varying social dynamics and circumstances across litters. Am. J. An understanding of recruitment is important for estimating population growth and viability, and their implications for conservation. We present the first results regarding the life history, maternal behavior and infant development of the critically endangered blue-eyed black lemur (Eulemur flavifrons) of Madagascar. The species breeds seasonally, with births occurring at the end of the dry season, between late August and October. Over two successive birth seasons in 2006 and 2007, we observed a total of 13 lactating females and 22 infants from six groups. We inferred age at first reproduction as 3 years, and calculated the birth rate as 1.0 infant per female per year with a mean inter-birth interval of 358 ± 24.81 days (319-410 days). Infants spent the first 3 weeks of life constantly with their mothers; locomotor independence and ingestion of solid food began at week 10, and the infants were weaned by week 25. After week 28, infants spent less than 20% of their time in contact with their mothers. Over the study period infant mortality was 22.7%, with predation and sickness observed as causes. Our results suggest that overall recruitment is relatively slow, which has implications for the species' survival, particularly given their restricted and threatened habitat.  相似文献

I discuss newborn baboon behavioral and proximity sex differences in a population of captive olive baboons (Papio anubis) living in a social group of >500 individuals. The data are based upon 20-min focal observations of 42 mother-newborn pairs (n = 27, n = 15) for infant-days 1–7 and 36 pairs (n = 23, n = 13) for infant-days 8–14 collected late-May through late-November 2001. I examined the first two weeks of infant life via behavioral, proximity, and approach-leave/contact analyses in order to determine whether behavioral sex differences exist during the first few days of life. I examine and analyze these 2 weeks independently due to different sample sizes. I used data from the total available sample population of 57 infants (n = 36, n = 21) to discuss birth, survivorship, and infant weight. Statistically significant age and/or age-sex interactions exist for all of the behavior and proximity measures during either infant-week 1 or 2. Moreover, there is a statistically significant difference in the birth sex ratio in the sample population but no significant difference in infant mortality by sex. There are also relative and significant differences in mothers' treatment of their newborn males and females. There are also some general tendencies for female newborns on average to suckle less and to explore more per focal observation than male infants do as they age. Conversely, male newborns average slightly more time per focal observation 1 m from the mother than do female infants. However, the observed differences may be influenced by maternal behavior in that mothers have higher rates of contact with their female than their male infants.  相似文献

Individually developing patterns of activity-rest rhythms in infants and the influence of environmental factors in the tuning and synchronisation of parent-infant pairs have important implications for the health of both infant and parents. After discharge from the hospital newborn infants are exposed to patterned influences of maternal and environmental regularities of a family's daily life resulting in varying degrees of social synchronisation. Actigraphic monitoring was used in this longitudinal study to examine how activity patterns of the entire family agree or disagree with each other, and how the infant entrains to the environment. Activity data of 12 families (father, mother and infant) were continuously recorded using non-invasive Actiwatch units. Recordings of parental activity started at the beginning of the 37th week of gestation, and were continued in parallel with the infants' recordings in three series of 21 days each until four months after birth: 1st to 3rd week, 7th to 9th week and 13th to 15th week of life. Fast Fourier transformation and cross correlation techniques were used to determine frequencies of each family member and to quantify the synchronisation of activity between parents and infants. To elucidate differences in social synchronisation between human cultures, synchronisation of a Melanesian family was additionally compared. Results showed the existence of corresponding ultradian frequencies in the activity patterns of mother-infant pairs at 1, 2 and 4 months. Increases in the synchronisation of parental activity were found from prenatal to postnatal and for mother-infant pairs from the first to the second month. Synchronisation between mother and infant always exceeded that of father and infant. Transient mono-, bi- or polyphasic activity patterns emerged in the infants immediately after birth. Good correspondence of mother-infant activity patterns during the early postnatal period was correlated with a rapid development of an entrained daily pattern in the infant.  相似文献

1. In six standard-bred mares and their foals diurnal changes in the cortisol and glucose levels and in FDPA activity were studies for 13 weeks of foal life. 2. In the cortisol level diurnal rhythm was found in the 3rd, 7th and 11th week of foal life and in the 11th week of lactation in mares. 3. In mares the mean diurnal cortisol level changed from 32 ng/ml in the first week to 57 in the 11th week and in foals from 24 in the first week to 16 ng/ml in the 11th week. 4. In the glucose level no diurnal rhythm was observed. 5. In mares the mean diurnal glucose level after parturition was about 58 mg/100 ml and increased to 83-85 mg/100 ml. In foals it changed from 105 to 128 mg/100 ml. 6. In the activity of FDPA no diurnal rhythm was observed. 7. The mean activity of FDPA changed in mares from 3.3 to 4.4 U and in foals from 5.7 to 7.5 U.  相似文献
