Understanding the link between ontogeny (development) and phylogeny (evolution) remains a key aim of biology. Heterochrony, the altered timing of developmental events between ancestors and descendants, could be such a link although the processes responsible for producing heterochrony, widely viewed as an interspecific phenomenon, are still unclear. However, intraspecific variation in developmental event timing, if heritable, could provide the raw material from which heterochronies originate. To date, however, heritable developmental event timing has not been demonstrated, although recent work did suggest a genetic basis for intraspecific differences in event timing in the embryonic development of the pond snail, Radix balthica. Consequently, here we used high-resolution (temporal and spatial) imaging of the entire embryonic development of R. balthica to perform a parent–offspring comparison of the timing of twelve, physiological and morphological developmental events. Between-parent differences in the timing of all events were good predictors of such timing differences between their offspring, and heritability was demonstrated for two of these events (foot attachment and crawling). Such heritable intraspecific variation in developmental event timing could be the raw material for speciation events, providing a fundamental link between ontogeny and phylogeny, via heterochrony. 相似文献

Summary Cachaça (sugarcane wine) was produced using different yeast strains, six being strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and one each of Candida apicola, Hanseniaspora occidentalis, Pichia subpelliculosa and Schizosaccharomyces pombe. The ethanol yields (%) of the non-Saccharomyces strains were similar to those of the Saccharomyces strains. The following determinations were carried out on the cachaça: acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate, propanol, isobutyl alcohol, isoamyl alcohol, volatile acidity. The cachaças showed variations in the levels of secondary compounds, but these variations did not result in differences (P ≤ 0.05) in the sensory attributes of aroma and flavour and overall impression. Of the volatile compounds quantified in the cachaças, only propanol showed a positive correlation (P ≤ 0.05) with the flavour attributes and overall impression. The S. pombe strain was considered inadequate for the production of cachaça. The cachaças were classified into five groups in an exploratory Hierarchical Cluster Analysis as a function of the volatile compounds. Principal Component Analysis showed that 93% of the variation (PC 1) occurred among the samples, and was explained by the individual volatile compounds and the total secondary compounds, with the exception of isoamyl alcohol only 7% (PC 2) was associated with the volatile acidity. The negative correlations shown between the volatile compounds of the cachaças and the ethanol content of the sugarcane wine, with the exception of acetaldehyde, showed that the variation in ethanol content of the sugarcane wine is an important factor for standardization of the ethanol/volatiles ratio and the beverage quality. 相似文献

β-1,3-glucan is a major component of fungal cell walls with various biological activities, including effects on the production of inflammatory mediators in vivo and in vitro. However, few reports have examined its influence on the fungal cell itself. In this study, the influences of β-1,3-glucan on the growth and cell wall structure of fungi was examined. Aspergillus fumigatus was cultured with a synthetic medium, C-limiting medium, in the presence or absence of β-1,3-glucan. Hyphal growth was promoted in liquid and solid-cultures by adding β-1,3-glucan. Glucose and dextran did not induce growth. The influence on cell wall structure of the β-glucan-added cultures was examined by enzymolysis and NMR spectroscopy and the amount of β-1,3-glucan found to be changed. β-1,3-glucan has been widely detected in the environment. In this study, it was demonstrated that β-1,3-glucan causes promotion of the growth, and a change in the cell wall architecture, of Aspergillus. Unregulated distribution of β-1,3-glucan would be strongly related to the incidence of infectious diseases and allergy caused by Aspergillus spp. 相似文献

The results of these experiments demonstrate that serum prolactin concentrations in heifers are directly related to ambient temperature. Serum prolactin concentrations were greatest when animals were exposed to 32°C and smallest when exposed to 4.5°C. Injection of 10µg of thyrotropinreleasing hormone (TRH) caused serum prolactin to increase within 5 min after treatment, and serum concentrations were related to ambient temperature. Herbivorous insects exploit many different plants and plant parts and often adopt different feeding strategies throughout their life cycle. The conceptual framework for investigating insect–plant interactions relies heavily on explanations invoking plant chemistry, neglecting a suite of competing and interacting pressures that may also limit herbivory. In the present paper, the methods by which ontogeny, feeding strategies and morphological characters inhibit herbivory by mandibulate holometabolous insects are examined. The emphasis on mechanical disruption of plant cells in the insect digestive strategy changes the relative importance of plant ‘defences’, increasing the importance of leaf structure in inhibiting herbivory. Coupled with the implications of substantial morphological and behavioural changes in ontogeny, herbivores adopt a range of approaches to herbivory that are independent of plant chemistry alone. Many insect herbivores exhibit substantial ontogenetic character displacement in mandibular morphology. This is tightly correlated with changes in feeding strategy, with changes to the cutting edges of mandibles increasing the efficiency of feeding. The changes in feeding strategy are also characterized by changes in feeding behaviour, with many larvae feeding gregariously in early instars. Non‐nutritive hypotheses considering the importance of natural enemies, shelter‐building and thermoregulation may also be invoked to explain the ontogenetic consequences of changes to feeding behaviour. There is a need to integrate these factors into a framework considering the gamut of potential explanations of insect herbivory, recognizing that ontogenetic constraints are not only viable explanations but a logical starting point. The interrelations between ontogeny, size, morphology and behaviour highlight the complexity of insect–plant relationships. Given the many methods used by insect herbivores to overcome the challenges of consuming foliage, the need for species‐specific and stage‐ specific research investigating ontogeny and host use by insect herbivores is critical for developing general theories of insect–plant interactions. 相似文献

Summary Busulphan and Endoxan® inhibit the normal course of ovarian follicular growth. Older secondary as well as all antral follicles perish within a very short time.Growing follicles, which at the beginning of the experiment exhibited only one layer, remained intact and single-layered during the entire duration of the experiment. The oocytes, however, continue growing, and the cytoplasmic structures, which are characteristic of older growing follicles, develop in them as well as in the follicle cells. Even a theca formation develops.In some of the growing follicles which have remained single-layered, after 10 days of Busulphan administration, some liquor folliculi is produced and accumulates in a fissure-shaped antrum between the zona pellucida and the follicular epithelium. 相似文献

Sample sites of `brousse tigrée' and related vegetation types are described for Mali and Niger. Species composition and physical structure of the herbaceous layer as well as woody plant population were recorded at all sites together with data on soils and natural resource management. Herbage yield was measured whereas foliage yield and wood mass were calculated using allometry equation calibrated for each species. `Brousse tigrée' is characterized by the regularly alternating bare-soil stripes with dense linear thickets arranged perpendicularly to the slope. There was no clear superiority in total plant production of `brousse tigrée' when compared to neighbouring site with diffuse vegetation. However, the pattern of `brousse tigrée' tended to favour woody plant yield to the detriment of herbage yield. The number of herbaceous species recorded per site (22–26) was slightly above Sahelian vegetation average despite low number of species per 1-m2 quadrat (6–9), bare soil excluded. This species richness reflects the diversity in edaphic niches resulting from the redistribution and local concentration of water resources and shade. The high spatial heterogeneity and species richness of the herbaceous layer in `brousse tigrée' did not attenuate the interannual variation in herbage yield despite low yields. Except for the herb layer, little evidence was found of grazing influence on the vegetation structure and yield a few hundred metres away from livestock concentration points. On the other hand, the clearing of thickets for cropping led to severe soil erosion which threaten the resilience of `brousse tigrée'. These observations and the well-defined climatic, soiland topographic situations under which the `brousse tigrée' occurs invalidate the hypothesis of an anthropic origin of that vegetationpattern. 相似文献

Exposure to enhanced levels of ambient ultraviolet (UV) radiation (UVR) can have adverse effects on aquatic organisms including damage at the cellular and molecular level and impairment of development, fecundity and survival. Much research has been conducted on the role of the harmful UVB radiation. However, due to its greater penetration in water the more abundant UVA radiation can also act as an environmental stressor. Little is known about UVR effects on sperm characteristics although sperm cells should be especially prone to UV-induced oxidative stress. Moreover, UV-related changes in oxidative status may affect the phenotypic expression of energetically costly sexual ornaments. We investigated the effects of long-term exposure to ecologically relevant levels of simulated UVA radiation on sperm quality and sexual ornamentation in three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Males were assigned to three spectral exposure treatments differing in the UV spectral part so that they received either enhanced, moderate or no UVA radiation. The results reveal that exposure to enhanced ambient UVA levels had detrimental effects on both male breeding coloration and sperm velocity providing evidence that UVR affects traits targeted by pre- and post-copulatory sexual selection. By highlighting the role of UVA as a factor influencing fitness-relevant traits, our findings may contribute to a better understanding of the consequences of current and future levels of solar UVR for mating systems and life history. 相似文献

Abstract Archival data from the MIDUS survey (Brim et al., 2000), a nationally representative sample, on 309 MZ and 333 DZ twin pairs aged 25–74 years were used to test the psychometrics and behavioral genetics of life history strategy. We organized 253 of the originally administered 2,000 questions into 30 scales measuring life history traits (e.g., quality of family relationships and altruism towards kin), medical symptoms (e.g., thyroid problems), personality traits (e.g., neuroticism, extraversion, conscientiousness), and social background (e.g., financial security). A single higher‐order factor, indicating a general life history strategy, composed of three lower‐order factors, was replicated. Factor analyses were then performed on the genetic variance‐covariance matrices. We found that (a) a single higher‐order factor explained the preponderance of the genetic correlations among the scales and (b) this higher‐order factor was itself 68 percent heritable and accounted for 82 percent of the genetic variance among the three component lower‐order factors. 相似文献

This study examined the influence of a 1-year brisk walking programme on endurance fitness and the amount and distribution of body fat in a group of formerly sedentary men. Seventy-two males, aged 42–59 years, body mass index 25.2 (0.3) kg·m–2 [mean (SEM)], were randomly allocated to either a walking group (n = 48) or control group (n = 24). Brisk walking speed was evaluated using a 1.6-km track walk. Changes in endurance fitness were assessed by measuring blood lactate concentration and heart rate during submaximal treadmill walking. Body composition was determined by hydrostatic weighing and anthropometry; energy intake was assessed from 7-day weighed food inventories. Differences in the response of walkers and controls were examined using two-way analyses of variance. Forty-two walkers (87.5%) completed the study and averaged 27.9 (1.4) min·day–1 of brisk walking (range 11–46). Brisk walking speed averaged 1.95 (0.03) m·s–1 and elicited approximately 68 (1) % of maximum heart rate. Heart rate and blood lactate concentration during submaximal treadmill walking were significantly reduced in the walkers after 3, 6 and 12 months and the oxygen uptake at a reference blood lactate concentration of 2 mmol·l–1 was increased by 3.2 ml·kg–1. min–1 (14.9%) in the walkers at 6 months (P< 0.01). Although skinfold thicknesses at anterior thigh and medial calf sites decreased significantly for the walkers, the response of the two groups did not differ significantly for other body composition variables or for energy intake. 相似文献

Personality exists in non-human animals and can impact fitness. There is, however, a shortage of empirical studies in certain areas within the field, and fundamental evolutionary theory on personality remains largely untested. For example, little is known on how variation in personality is maintained over evolutionary time. Theory suggests that fluctuating selection pressures due to spatiotemporal variation in conditions, e.g. food availability, is a possible mechanism and a few studies have shown that the success of different personality types varies with spatiotemporal conditions. However, it remains unknown whether different mechanisms can maintain personality within a species. Here we use a reintroduction programme for the critically endangered European mink (Mustela lutreola) to test whether multiple personality trait domains (boldness, exploration and sociability) affected survival in two different years and islands. This was done through pre-release personality tests and post-release radio-tracking monitoring. Survival was positively correlated with boldness, whereas the relationship with exploration was either negative or positive depending on year/island. The results show a complex relationship between personality and survival and suggest that exploration can be maintained over evolutionary time via spatiotemporal variation in conditions. However, in contrast to exploration, boldness did not vary spatiotemporally and sociability had no impact on survival. This indicates that different personality trait domains might be maintained by different mechanisms. To date, personality has been studied primarily within behavioural sciences, but through empirical findings we highlight the importance of personality also in ecology and conservation biology. 相似文献

The protolytic equilibrium of fluorescein in aqueous solutions was studied in the presence of cycloheptaamylose (β-cyclodextrin, or β-CD). The constants of stepwise ionization of the dye (), Ka0, Ka1, and Ka2 were determined using vis-spectroscopy at ionic strength 0.05 M (NaCl + buffer) and 25 °C. In the presence of 0.0086 M β-CD, the indices of ionization constants are as follows: pKa0 = 1.21 ± 0.12, pKa1 = 5.08 ± 0.03, pKa2 = 6.35 ± 0.02. The changes in these pKas, as compared with the values determined without cyclodextrin, are unequal. Namely, the pKa0 value decreases by 1.0, while the pKa1 value increases by 0.7. Thus, the introduction of β-CD allows to govern the ratios Ka0/Ka1 and Ka1/Ka2, which are equal to, respectively, 141 and 151 in water, and 7.4 × 103 and 18.6 with cyclodextrin added. Rationalization of the observed phenomenon is possible taking into account the detailed scheme of protolytic equilibrium. Conclusions concerning tautomerism of dye molecules were deduced from absorption spectra; the fractions of tautomers, tautomerization constants, and microscopic ionization constants were evaluated. These data allow concluding that the main reason for the aforementioned pKa alterations is the binding of H2R by the cyclodextrin cavity accompanied by turning these neutral species into the colorless lactone. The host-guest interaction of neutral species of fluorescein isothiocyanate, 2,7-dichlorofluorescein, and 3′,4′,5′,6′-tetrachlorofluorescein also results in the cyclodextrin-assisted shift of tautomeric equilibrium. Such nature of interactions is proved by the addition of competing agents, camphor-4-carboxylic acid and sodium n-nonylsulfonate, which results in the removing of neutral dye species from the cycloheptaamylose cavity. 相似文献

The dispersion of the depolarization ratio of two prominent Raman lines (1,375 cm–1 and 1,638 cm–1) of oxyhemoglobin-N-ethyl succinimide have been examined for pH values between pH=6.0 and 8.5. Both exhibit a significant pH dependence. Calculation of the Raman tensor in terms of a fifth-order time dependent theory provides information about the pH-dependence of parameters reflecting symmetry classified distortions of the prosthetic heme group. To correlate these distortions with the functional properties of the molecule the following protocol was used: 1) An allosteric model suggested by Herzfeld and Stanley (1974) has been applied to O2-binding curves measured at different pH values between 6.5 and 9.0. From this calculation one obtains both, the energy differences between different molecular conformations and the equilibrium constants of oxygen and proton binding. 2) A titration model was formulated relating each conformation of a molecule to a distinct set of distortion parameters of the heme group. 3) The distortion parameters resulting from the analysis of our Raman data were assigned as an effective value due to incoherent superposition of the distortion parameters related to the different titration states. The application of this procedure yields an excellent reproduction of the pH-dependent effective distortion parameters of both Raman lines investigated. It is shown that the protonation of two tertiary effector groups located in the -subunits affect the symmetry of the heme in a contrary manner: the protonation of a His-residue (pK=8.2, probably His(FG4)) causes a symmetric position of the proximal imidazole thus lowering the perturbations of the heme core. Further it influences the interaction between amino acid residues of the heme cavity and pyrrole side chains (probably Val (FG5)-vinyl (pyrrole 3) thus causing a decrease of the distortions related to the peripheral part of the heme. In contrast, the protonation of Lys (EF6) causes a tilt position of the proximal imidazole and an increase of asymmetric perturbations of the heme core, whereas the interaction between the pyrrole side chains and the heme cavity is weakened. Our results are consistent with stereochemical predictions of Moffat (1971) concerning the existence of an H-bond between His(FG4) and Cys(F9).Abbreviations DPR

Recent studies of typically monogamous passerine birds have suggested that the fitness benefits males derive by caring for their young may not be as great as was previously thought. This study was conducted to determine whether parental care by male dark-eyed juncos, Junco hyemalis, serves to increase either the quantity or quality of young that they produce. Over a 4-year period, males were caught at the time their eggs hatched, and the subsequent growth and survival of the young of unaided females and control pairs were compared. Broods raised by unaided females gained body mass more slowly and fledged at slightly lower mass than those raised by two parents. However, fledging mass was not correlated with survival to independence. There were no differences in tarsus growth between the two treatment groups. Entire brood loss to predators occurred as often among females without male help as it did among those with male help. However, partial brood loss was more common among female-only broods than among controls; this difference was largely attributable to higher rates of starvation and exposure in female-only broods. There appeared to be an interaction between growth and predation. Female-only broods that were below the median mass of combined treatment groups at 5 days of age were more likely than all other broods to experience partial or complete predation. Male impact on offspring survival varied with age of the offspring. When years were combined, males tended to increase survival during the first half of the nestling period, but their impact at the time of nest-leaving was minimal. In all years, from nest-leaving to independence (ca. 2 weeks), broods without male help survived only about half as well as did those with male help. Independent young raised by one parent were as likely to return the following spring as were young raised by two parents. Thus, paternal care benefits males by improving the survivorship of their fledglings, and may also act as a buffer against poor female parental quality and inclement weather. However, the magnitude of these benefits is such that bigamous males might achieve greater reproductive success than monogamous males. Various possible male strategies are discussed. 相似文献

Abstract The influence Of temperature on the growth and survival of first-instar larvae of black beetle feeding in soil was examined. Similarly the consumption, utilisation, growth, and survival of second- and third-instar larvae feeding on carrot were investigated using gravimetric methods. Soil temperatures in the range 20–25° c were found to be necessary for optimum growth of all instars. First-instar larval growth increased exponentially over the temperature range 10–20°c. Third-instar larvae were tolerant of higher temperatures than second-instar larvae. The temperatures for optimum levels of consumption and utilisation of carrot varied between the instars. 相似文献

Taurine, one of the sulfur-containing amino acids, has several functions in vivo. It has been reported that taurine acts on γ-aminobutyric acid receptors as an agonist and to promote inhibitory neurotransmission. Milk, especially colostrum, contains taurine and it is known that milk taurine is essential for the normal development of offspring. β-Alanine is transported via a taurine transporter and a protein-assisted amino acid transporter, the same ones that transport taurine. The present study aimed to investigate whether the growth and behavior of offspring could be altered by modification of the taurine concentration in milk. Pregnant ICR mice were separated into 3 groups: 1) a control group, 2) a taurine group, and 3) a β-alanine group. During the lactation periods, dams were administered, respectively, with 0.9% saline (10?ml/kg, i.p.), taurine dissolved in 0.9% saline (43 mg/10?ml/kg, i.p.), or β-alanine dissolved in 0.9% saline (31 mg/10?ml/kg, i.p.). Interestingly, the taurine concentration in milk was significantly decreased by the administration of β-alanine, but not altered by the taurine treatment. The body weight of offspring was significantly lower in the β-alanine group. β-Alanine treatment caused a significant decline in taurine concentration in the brains of offspring, and it was negatively correlated with total distance traveled in the open field test at postnatal day 15. Thus, decreased taurine concentration in the brain induced hyperactivity in offspring. These results suggested that milk taurine may have important role of regulating the growth and behavior of offspring. 相似文献

Canine parvovirus (CPV) emerged in 1978 an a new pathogen of dogs, which spread around the world and now appears endemic in the domesticated and wild dog populations in all countries. CPV is over 98% identical in DNA sequence to viruses which had been known for many years in cats, mink and raccoons, and genetic analysis has revealed that the differences in canine host range are determined by a small number of changes in the capsid protein gene. Comparison of the atomic structures of the CPV and FPV capsids shows that the changes affecting host range and virus-specific antigenic sites are exposed on the capsid surface in three different positions within a raised region at the threefold axis of symmetry, which is also the site of major antigenic determinants on the capsid. Three types of CPV have been defined by antigenic analysis with monoclonal antibodies. The original CPV strain (called CPV type-2) was only present in nature for a few years, and by 1981 it had been largely replaced in nature by a variant of CPV (CPV type 2a), which in turn replaced between 1984 and 1990 by a further variant (CPV type-2b). Those viruses differed by less than 0.2% of their genome sequences, but in each case the replacement apparently occurred on a global scale. The true ancestry of CPV is not clear, but the apparent emergence of the new types of CPV and its subsequent evolution suggest that this is a useful model for the emergence of new viruses with extended host ranges and their continuing adaptation. 相似文献

Unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) were measured in human peripheral lymphocytes from healthy volunteers. These processes were induced by the catalytic system Fe2+-sodium ascorbate. The degree of induced LPO was measured spectrophotometrically by the thiobarbituric acid assay. UDS was detected by scintillometric measurement of the incorporation of 3H-thymidine into DNA. The protective action by fat-soluble vitamin E (d,l-α-tocopherol) and the artificial antioxidant pyritinol on UDS and LPO was also investigated.The system Fe2+ (2 μmole/1)-sodium ascorbate (30 μmole/1) increased the LPO level in healthy volunteers approximately 2.5 times and the incorporation of 3H-thymidine by 60–70%. α-Tocopherol (0.2 mmole/1) very efficiently suppressed LPO processes (p < 0.01) and the oxidative damage of DNA measured as UDS was also significantly diminished (p < 0.05). Pyritinol had no effect on LPO and UDS under our experimental conditions. 相似文献
