Seasonal variation in N2 fixation, N transfer from clover to ryegrass, and soil N absorption in white clover–ryegrass swards were investigated under field conditions over three consecutive years. The plots were established with different seeding ratios of clover and ryegrass and contrasting fertilizer N ranging from 3 to 72 kg ha-1 year-1.An initially poor clover population needed at least one growing season to reach the same yield output as an initially well established clover population. The clover content of the sward decreased by the annual application of 72 kg N ha-1 but not by smaller N dressings. The total amount of atmospherically derived N in clover growing in mixture with ryegrass was, on average over the three years equal to 83, 71, 68 and 60 kg N ha-1 for the treatments of 3, 24, 48 and 72 kg N ha-1, respectively. The proportion of atmospherically derived N declined with increasing N application, but never became smaller than 80% of total clover N. The proportion of atmospherically derived N in a pure stand white clover amounted to 60–80% of the total N content, equivalent to 109, 110, 103 and 90 kg N ha-1 for the treatments of 3, 24, 48 and 72 kg N ha-1, respectively.Only small amounts of atmospherically derived N was transferred to the associated ryegrass during the first production year, while in each of the following years up to 21 kg ha-1 was transferred. The average amount of N transferred from clover to ryegrass was equivalent to 3, 16 and 31% of the N accumulated in ryegrass in the first, second and third production year, respectively. Expressed relative to the total amount of fixed N2 in the clover–ryegrass mixture, the transfer amounted to 3, 17 and 22% in the first, second and third production year, respectively. Thus transfer of atmospherically derived N from clover contributed significantly to the N economy of the associated ryegrass. The clover–ryegrass mixture absorbed constantly higher amount of soil derived N than the pure stands of the two species. Only 11% of the total accumulated fertilizer N and soil derived N in the mixture was contained within the clover component. Lower water use efficiencies for the plants grown in mixture compared to pure stands were mainly related to the increased N uptake in the mixture, with the subsequent increase in growth compared to the pure stands. It is concluded that positive interactions between clover and ryegrass growing in mixture ensure a more efficient fixation of atmospheric N2 and absorption of fertilizer N and soil derived N than pure stands of the same species.  相似文献

A simple three equation model is proposed for the feedback regulation of nitrate uptake and N2 fixation, based on the concentration of the organic N substrate pool within the plant and two parameters denoting the N substrate concentrations at which half-maximal inhibition occurs. This model simulated three contrasting phenotypes of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) inbred lines with (1) normal rates of nitrate uptake and N2 fixation (NNU); (2) low rates of nitrate uptake (LNU); and (3) very low rates of N2 fixation (VLF). The LNU phenotype was simulated by a decrease in the value of the inhibition parameter for nitrate uptake and the VLF phenotype was simulated by a decrease in the value of the N2 fixation inhibition parameter. The model was tested against nitrate uptake data obtained from white clover plants growing in flowing nutrient culture. There was an accurate prediction of the increase in nitrate uptake caused by N2 fixation activity of the NNU and LNU inbred lines being interrupted by a switch in gas phase from air to Ar : O2. The model was also tested against data for nitrate uptake, N2 fixation and %N from fixation for the three inbred clover lines grown in flowing nutrient culture at 0, 5 or 20 mmol m(-3) N(3-). Again there was accurate prediction of nitrate uptake, although simulated values for N2 fixation were more variable. The simple model has potential use as a sub-routine in larger models of legume growth under field conditions.  相似文献

Summary Nodulation of pea cv. Afghanistan and cv. Iran by a nodulating Rhizobium strain is suppressed by the presence of a non-nodulating strain. The degree of suppression varies, dependent on the Rhizobium strains used. There is a great variation in the competitive ability of the Rhizobium strains and this is not related to the ability to form root nodules. The critical period of competition is restricted to ca. 24 hours after inoculation.  相似文献

Summary Sodium nitrate applications ranging from 0.36 to 22.84 mM N were shown to depress rates of nodule formation and reduce total nitrogen fixation (acetylene reduction) in white clover plants grown in aseptic test tube culture.Low nitrate levels gave an initial depression in symbiotic activity but the reduction was of short duration and these treatments were subsequently associated with enhanced rates of nodule formation and nitrogen fixation. As a result, phenotypic variation appeared to be strongly differentially affected by the amount of nitrate present. A subsequent experiment suggested that much of the variation was a consequence of early enhancement of plant growth rates by low levels of nitrate followed by rapid depletion thus giving a transitory inhibitory effect. This was confirmed in a third experiment in which the range of nitrate concentration was held constant. Differential effects on variability in nodule formation and nitrogen fixation were then greatly reduced but there was still a residual level of plant-to-plant variation. The results have clear implications for selecting genetic variants capable of fixing di-nitrogen in the presence of combined N. The provision of a single limiting dose of combined nitrogen to a population containing individuals with inherently different growth rates can bring about variations in the phenotypic expression of symbiotic characters. These variations are unlikely to be based on genetic factors which have a direct and stable effect on nodule development and nitrogenase activity. The implications of the results for plant breeding are discussed.  相似文献

Summary White clover (Trifolium repens L.) plants grown in pots and supplied with the same concentration x days of15N labelled nitrate, but in contrasting patterns and doses had similar N concentrations but differed in the proportions devived from N2 fixation and nitrate. N2-fixation and nodule dry weight responded rapidly (2–3 days) to changes in nitrate availability. Plants exposed frequently to small doses of nitrate took up more nitrate (and hence relied less on N2-fixation) and had greater dry weights and shoot: root ratios than those exposed to larger doses less often. In mixed ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)/clover communities clover's ability to either successfully compete for nitrate or fix N2 gave it consistently higher N concentrations than grass whether they were given high or low nitrate nutrient. This higher N concentration was accompanied by greater dry weights than grass in the low nitrate swards but not where high levels of nitrate were applied.  相似文献

Ninety eight white clover genotypes were cloned and grown in pots at two levels of phosphorus (P) supply in soil. After harvest the nitrogen (N) and P content of shoot (leaf, petiole and unrooted stolon), stolon and root tissue was determined. Broad sense heritabilities for %N, %P, and proportion of total N or P in each tissue type were calculated. Heritabilities ranged from 0.22 to 0.68. They were generally higher for %P than %N; and higher in shoot and stolon tissue than root tissue for %P, %N, and proportion of N or P. Level of P in which plants were grown had little effect on heritability values. Genotypes from bred cultivars differed from those collected from hill country pastures for plant size, and partitioning of N and P to shoot, stolon and root. Relationships between plant characters were examined to determine the consequences of selection.  相似文献

Summary The responses of white clover (cv NZ Grasslands Huia grown in four UK hill soil types) to additions of lime and P, to inoculation with Rhizobium and mycorrhizal fungi, and to differences in soil water status were assessed in pot and field experiments. With a deep peat soil in pots, shoot production, nodulation and N fixation by clover were increased by 160, 130 and 85% respectively following inoculation with mycorrhiza, but in the field, despite a doubling of root infection, there was no response in growth. On a brown earth soil in the field inoculation with one endophyte (Glomus mosseae L1) out of four tested depressed production of white clover shoots by 42% but enhanced that of leeks (Allium porrum) by 50%; the others were without effect. With dry peaty podzol and brown earth soils in pots, clover shoot production was highest with added P when a water holding capacity of 80% was maintained, but roots from the latter had only 2.6 compared to 68 nodules per plant from the former. Further work is required to explain poor nodulation in the brown earth soils.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) fertiliser and clover cultivar choice affect competition and productivity in grass-clover mixtures. Pure stands and mixtures of perennial ryegrass and white clover cultivars with contrasting growth habits were examined. The aim of this work was to study the effect of repetitive nitrogen (N) application and cultivar combination on competition and productivity, N yield in the harvested herbage, N2 fixation in mixtures and pure stands, and transfer of N from clover to the companion grass. Large-leaved white clover cultivar Alice and small-leaved cv. Gwenda and perennial ryegrass cvs. Barlet (erect) and Heraut (prostrate) were sown in pure stands and as four binary grass-clover mixtures on a sandy soil in 1995. In the mixtures, two levels of N fertiliser were applied: 0 (-N) and 150 and 180 kg ha-1 y-1 N (+N) in 1996 and 1997, respectively, while the grass monocultures received three N levels (0, 140/180 and 280/360 kg ha-1) in 1996 and 1997, respectively. No N was applied to pure clover. The plots were cut five times during 1996 and six times during 1997. Fertiliser N was applied in early spring and after every harvest. The treatments were continued until the summer of 1999. In pure grass, the applied N was effectively recovered. In mixtures, N application affected competition by enhancing grass growth and the overall effect of N application was 17 kg DM per kg N applied in 1996. However, there was no yield response to N fertilizer in 1997, because this was compensated for by a higher clover production in unfertilised mixtures. In 1997, -N mixtures yielded more N than +N mixtures, owing to the higher clover content and N2 fixation. Large-leaved clover cv. Alice was better able to withstand the negative effect of repetitive N application on clover production in mixtures and increased its proportion during the growing season of the second harvest year. In 1997, mixtures with Alice yielded more N than mixtures with Gwenda, but in pure clover swards, there was no cultivar effect on N yield. Also, during the autumn of 1998 and the spring of 1999, the clover content was highest in mixtures with Alice. Harvested N and apparent N2 fixation were almost twice as high in 1997 as in 1996. N yield and apparent N2 fixation were higher in pure clover than in mixtures. In mixtures, the apparent N2 fixation in 1996 was 142 kg N ha-1, irrespective of cultivar or N treatment. In 1997, it was on average 337 kg N ha-1, and higher in -N mixtures and in mixtures with Alice. For each tonne of clover DM in the harvested herbage, 65 and 57 kg N was harvested in 1996 and 1997 in -N mixtures, respectively. The apparent transfer of clover-derived N to grass was on average 29 and 70 kg N ha-1 yr-1 in 1996 and 1997, respectively. It was highest in +N mixtures and highest in mixtures with Gwenda in 1997. In contrast to clover, the grass cultivars were very similar in their productivity and seasonal patterns, despite their contrasting growth habits. Seasonal trends in N yield, N transfer and N recovery are discussed in relation to fertilizer application regimes and variation in production patterns in mixtures and pure stands. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The effects of P deficiency on growth, N(2)-fixation and photosynthesis in white clover (Trifolium repens L.) plants were investigated using three contrasting relative addition rates of P, or following abrupt withdrawal of the P supply. Responses to a constant below-optimum P supply rate consisted of a decline in N(2)-fixation per unit root weight and a small reduction in the efficiency with which electrons were allocated to the reduction of N(2) in nodules. Abrupt removal of P arrested nodule growth and caused a substantial decline in nitrogenase activity per unit root weight, but not per unit nodule mass. Similarly, the rate of photosynthesis per unit leaf area was unaffected by abrupt P removal, whereas CO(2) acquisition for the plant as a whole decreased due to a decline in total leaf area, leaf area per unit leaf weight and utilization of incoming radiation. These changes followed the decline in tissue P concentrations. The ratio between CO(2)-fixation and N(2)-fixation was maintained under short-term P deprivation but increased under long-term low P supply, indicating a regulatory inhibition of nodule activity following morphological and growth adjustments. It is concluded that N(2)-fixation did not limit the growth of clover plants experiencing P deficiency. A low P status induced changes in the relative growth of roots, nodules and shoots rather than changes in N and/or C uptake rates per unit mass or area of these organs.  相似文献

Nitrogenase (N2ase; EC 1.18.6.1) activity (H2 evolution) and root respiration (CO2 evolution) were measured under either N2:O2 or Ar:O2 gas mixtures in intact nodulated roots from white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) plants grown either as spaced or as dense stands. The short-term nitrate (5 m M ) inhibition of N2-fixation was promoted by competition for light between clover shoots, which reduced CO2 net assimilation rate. Oxygen-diffusion permeability of the nodule declined during nitrate treatment but after nitrate removal from the liquid medium its recovery parallelled that of nitrogenase activity. Rhizosphere pO2 was increased from 20 to 80 kPa under N2:O2. A simple mono-exponential model, fitted to the nodule permeability response to pO2, indicated NO3 induced changes in minimum and maximum nodule O2-diffusion permeability. Peak H2 production rates at 80 kPa O2 and in Ar:O2 were close to the pre-decline rates at 20 kPa O2. At the end of the nitrate treatment, this O2-induced recovery in nitrogenase activity reached 71 and 82%; for clover plants from spaced and dense stands, respectively. The respective roles of oxygen diffusion and phloem supply for the short-term inhibition of nitrogenase activity in nitrate-treated clovers are discussed.  相似文献

Effects of mineral nitrogen (2, 4, 6 and 8 m M NH4NO3) and nodulation with Rhizobium on frost hardiness in seedlings of white clover ( Trifolium repens ) have been studied. Seedlings of a population from Bodø (67°N lat.) were grown in Leonard jars under controlled conditions in a phytotron. For induction of frost hardening, plants were first exposed to 12 h photoperiod conditions for 2 weeks at 18°C, then for 2 weeks at 6°C and finally for 2 weeks at 0.5°C. Frost hardiness after treatments at 6 and 0.5°C was significantly enhanced by increasing nitrogen supply and was positively correlated with total nitrogen content of the stolons. Frost hardiness of nodulated plants correlated to the tissue nitrogen concentration. Content of soluble proteins in stolons decreased during hardening at 6°C but did not change during treatment at 0.5°C. There were minor changes in total amount of free amino acids during hardening. Both absolute and relative amounts of proline and arginine increased, and those of asparagine decreased during hardening. Absolute amounts of all free amino acids increased with increasing nitrogen supply, but the changes during hardening were similar in all treatments. There was a significant increase in the content of soluble carbohydrates during hardening. However, this increase was inversely related to nitrogen supply.  相似文献

Biological N2 fixation in clover is an important source of N in low external-N input farming systems. Using the natural 15N-abundance method, variations in N2 fixation were investigated in grazed and mowed plots of a ryegrass/white clover field. Ryegrass 15N varied considerably, from 0.2 to 5.6 under mowed conditions and from –3.3 to 11.6 under grazed conditions. Variations in 15N white clover were lower than in ryegrass, especially in the mowed plots (SE = 0.05, n = 20). The variations in the percentage of nitrogen derived from the atmosphere (%Ndfa) in white clover were highest in the grazed plots where it ranged from 12 to 96% (mean = 64%) compared with the mowed plots where it ranged from 64 to 92% (mean = 79%). Thus, the N2 fixation per unit white clover DM in the grazed ley was lower and more variable than under mowing conditions.Urine from dairy cows equivalent to 0, 200, 400 and 800 kg N ha-1 was applied to a ryegrass/white clover plot 6, 4 or 2 weeks before harvest. Without urine application 15N of ryegrass was positive. By increasing urine application (15N = –1) two weeks before sampling, the 15N of ryegrass decreased strongly to about –7 (P < 0.001). However, this effect was only observed when urine was applied two weeks before sampling. When applying 800 kg N four and six weeks before sampling, 15N in ryegrass was not significantly different from the treatment without urine application. White clover 15N was unaffected by whatever changes occurred in 15N of the plant-available soil N pool (reflected in 15N of ryegrass). This indicates that within the time span of this experiment, N2 fixation per unit DM was not affected by urine. Therefore, newly deposited urine may not be the main contributing factor to the variation in %Ndfa found in the grazed fields. This experiment suggested that the natural abundance method can be applied for estimating %Ndfa without disturbance in natural animal-grazed systems.  相似文献

Perennial ryegrass and perennial ryegrass/white clover permanent dairy pastures are compared with respect to productivity, environmental impact and financial costs in nitrate vulnerable zones (NVZ) in the UK. With appropriate management, and utilisation of recommended perennial ryegrass and white clover cultivars, white clover is likely to stabilise at around 20% of total dry matter production in a mixed pasture. Plant dry matter production and milk production from a perennial ryegrass/white clover pasture are likely to be similar to that from a perennial ryegrass pasture receiving 200 kg N ha−1 annum−1 and around 70% of that obtained with perennial ryegrass supplied with 350–400 kg N ha−1 annum−1. Nitrate, phosphorus and methane losses from the system and decreases in biodiversity relative to a grazed indigenous sward are likely to be similar for a perennial ryegrass/white clover pasture and a perennial ryegrass pasture receiving 200 kg N ha−1 annum−1: nitrate leachate from both systems is likely to comply with European legislation. Greenhouse gas emissions resulting from nitrogen (N) fertiliser production would be avoided with the perennial ryegrass/white clover pasture. Within NVZ stocking rate restrictions, white clover can provide the N required by a pasture at a lower financial cost than that incurred by the application of N fertiliser.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Growth of bedding plants, in small peat plugs, relies on nutrients in the irrigation solution. The object of the study was to find a way of modifying the nutrient supply so that good-quality seedlings can be grown rapidly and yet have the high root : shoot ratios essential for efficient transplanting. METHODS: A new procedure was devised in which the concentrations of nutrients in the irrigation solution were modified during growth according to changing plant demand, instead of maintaining the same concentrations throughout growth. The new procedure depends on published algorithms for the dependence of growth rate and optimal plant nutrient concentrations on shoot dry weight W(s) (g m(-2)), and on measuring evapotranspiration rates and shoot dry weights at weekly intervals. Pansy, Viola tricola 'Universal plus yellow' and petunia, Petunia hybrida 'Multiflora light salmon vein' were grown in four independent experiments with the expected optimum nutrient concentration and fractions of the optimum. Root and shoot weights were measured during growth. KEY RESULTS: For each level of nutrient supply W(s) increased with time (t) in days, according to the equation DeltaW(s)/Deltat=K(2)W(s)/(100+W(s)) in which the growth rate coefficient (K(2)) remained approximately constant throughout growth. The value of K(2) for the optimum treatment was defined by incoming radiation and temperature. The value of K(2) for each sub-optimum treatment relative to that for the optimum treatment was logarithmically related to the sub-optimal nutrient supply. Provided the aerial environment was optimal, R(sb)/R(o) approximately W(o)/W(sb) where R is the root : shoot ratio, W is the shoot dry weight, and sb and o indicate sub-optimum and optimum nutrient supplies, respectively. Sub-optimal nutrient concentrations also depressed shoot growth without appreciably affecting root growth when the aerial environment was non-limiting. CONCLUSION: The new procedure can predict the effects of nutrient supply, incoming radiation and temperature on the time course of shoot growth and the root : shoot ratio for a range of growing conditions.  相似文献

Perennial legume such as alfalfa have the capacity to sustain shoot regrowth and some nodule N2-fixation after removal (cutting) of shoots which contain practically all of the plant's photosynthetic capacity. The role of the roots in supporting these processes has not been fully described. Measurements were made of the nodules' responses to removal of shoots from 8-week-old seedlings in terms of N2-fixation, as nitrogenase activity (NA) measured as acetylene reduction, dark CO2 fixation, measured as in vitro phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) activity, and total non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) content. These properties decreased and recovered in that sequence, which suggests that nodule NSC supported the substrate requirements of NA and PEPC immediately after cutting. The utilization and redistribution or root carbon and nitrogen, prelabeled with 14C and 15N, were also followed after cutting 8-week-old alfalfa seedlings. In the first 2 weeks of regrowth 12% of root C and 25% of root N were transferred for incorporation into new shoots. Up to 40% of the root C was used for plant respiration to support 28 days of shoot regrowth and N2-fixation. The decline of N2-fixation was slower after cutting and its minimum activity rose up 45% of pre-cut activity as root reserves were built up with plant age. Therefore, the stored reserves of nodulated roots play an important role in support of N2-fixation after cutting.Contribution No. 1265 from Plant Research Center.Contribution No. 1265 from Plant Research Center.  相似文献

To increase our insight into the above- and belowground N flows in grass and grass-clover swards relations between crop and soil parameters were studied in a cutting trial with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) monocultures and ryegrass–white clover (Trifolium repens) mixtures. The effects of clover cultivar on herbage yield, the amount of clover-derived nitrogen, apparent N transfer to companion grass, dynamics of N and organic matter in the soil were estimated. The grass monocultures had very low DM yields (<2.1 t ha-1) and a low N concentration in the harvested herbage. During 1992–1995 the annual herbage DM yield in the mixtures ranged from 7.0 to 14.3 t ha-1, the white clover DM yield from 2.4 to 11.2 t ha-1 and the mean annual clover content in the herbage DM harvested from 34 to 78%. Mixtures with the large-leaved clover cv. Alice yielded significantly more herbage and clover DM and had a higher clover content than mixtures with small/medium-leaved cvs. Gwenda and Retor. Grass cultivar did not consistently affect yield, botanical composition or soil characteristics. The apparent N2 fixation was very high, ranging from 150 to 545 kg N ha-1 in the different mixtures. For each tonne of clover DM in the harvested herbage 49 to 63 kg N was harvested, while the apparent N transfer from clover to grass varied between 55 and 113 kg N ha-1 year-1.The net N mineralization rate was lower under monocultures than under mixtures. The C mineralization and the amounts of C and N in active soil organic matter fractions were similar for monocultures and mixtures, but the C:N ratio of the active soil organic matter fractions were higher under grass than under mixtures. This explains the lower N mineralization under grass.  相似文献
