The morphology of three colubrid snakes, Elaphe subradiata, Psammodynastes pulverulentus, Lycodon aulicus capucinus , and the viper Trimeresurus albolabris , were examined from populations throughout the Lesser Sunda islands using canonical variate analysis. The Lesser Sundas form the western part of two extensive Island chains, the Banda Arcs, that lie between the large islands on the Sunda (Asian) and Sahul (Australian) continental shelves. The snakes of the Lesser Sunda islands show considerable intraspecific variation in morphology. Populations of Trimeresurus albolabris from Wetar and Psammodynastes pulverulentus from Alor show the greatest morphological separation from conspecifics. The most pronounced morphological differentiation in multidimensional space occurs between populations on islands that remained separated throughout the Pleistocene, when sea levels were about 120 m lower than present. Consensus tree evaluation of Mahalanobis distance for populations of these four species and Dendrelaphis pubis on the islands of Lombok, Sumba, Flores, Lembata and Alor, supports the finding that populations from islands that remained isolated throughout the Pleistocene by sea barriers show the greatest morphological divergence.  相似文献

Bird counts were made on the islands of Java, Bali, Lombok and Sumbawa during a 16 day study in September 1973 in order to compare bird populations either side of Wallace's Line (running between Bali and Lombok). Evidence was collected which showed that the two westerly islands of Java and Bali share a relatively similar bird fauna, but this differs noticeably from the bird life found more to the east. The conspicuous faunal break which occurs between Bali and Lombok appears to represent a transition from a rich fauna associated with the large continental island of Java, to a somewhat impoverished fauna of the outlying oceanic islands. Marked differences in habitat on the four islands were considered to be primarily important in dictating this change.
Using frequency and abundance estimates for the different bird families it was shown that Java and Bali have a preponderance of Oriental (Asian) birds while Lombok and Sumbawa have more conspicuous Australian elements. However, when the presence or absence of species or families alone are considered all four islands have more Oriental types. It seems that a small range of Australian species including honey eaters, wood swallows, zebra finches and parrots are relatively abundant on Lombok and Sumbawa, and are a sufficiently conspicuous feature of the fauna east of Wallace's Line to impress the visitor that he has entered Australasia.
The bird counts illustrate some of the changes originally described by A. R. Wallace (1860).  相似文献

The East Indies triangle, bordered by the Phillipines, Malay Peninsula and New Guinea, has a high level of tropical marine species biodiversity. Pristipomoides multidens is a large, long-lived, fecund snapper species that is distributed throughout the East Indies and Indo-Pacific. Samples were analysed from central and eastern Indonesia and northern Australia to test for genetic discontinuities in population structure. Fish (n = 377) were collected from the Indonesian islands of Bali, Sumbawa, Flores, West Timor, Tanimbar and Tual along with 131 fish from two northern Australian locations (Arafura and Timor Seas) from a previous study. Genetic variation in the control region of the mitochondrial genome was assayed using restriction fragment length polymorphism and direct sequencing. Haplotype diversity was high (0.67-0.82), as was intraspecific sequence divergence (range 0-5.8%). F(ST) between pairs of populations ranged from 0 to 0.2753. Genetic subdivision was apparent on a small spatial scale; F(ST) was 0.16 over 191 km (Bali/Sumbawa) and 0.17 over 491 km (Bali/Flores). Constraints to dispersal that contribute to, and maintain, the observed degree of genetic subdivision are experienced presumably by all life history stages of this tropical marine finfish. The constraints may include (1) little or no movement of eggs or larvae, (2) little or no home range or migratory movement of adults and (3) loss of larval cohorts due to transport of larvae away from suitable habitat by prevailing currents.  相似文献

Morphological and genetic analyses of Eonycteris spelaea from 15 islands along the Banda Arc, from Sumatra to Timor and including Kalimantan and Sulawesi, revealed considerable divergence between islands and geographical patterning. On the basis of both morphology and genetics, the populations on the large islands of Greater Sunda (Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan and Sulawesi) are generally distinct from one another and from those on the islands in Nusa Tenggara (Lombok to Timor), which form a more cohesive cluster. These differences may be the result of the Nusa Tenggara populations having been colonized more recently than those on the Greater Sunda, and probably from a single source. All biological measures of the relationships between island populations are positively associated with the extent of the sea-crossing between them, indicating the sea is an important barrier to movement. Multivariate analyses show the presence of a marked trend for body size to increase from west to east. However, individuals from Kalimantan are not consistent with this trend, being smaller than predicted, and on the two outer Banda Arc islands of Sumba and Timor animals are a little larger than predicted from the longitudinal trend. These differences could be due to the relative isolation of these populations or differing environmental conditions. There is also a negative relationship between body size and island area, but this is confounded by the longitudinal trend. No significant longitudinal trends in the genetic data were detected and the trend in body size may be an adaptive response to an environmental cline that is known to occur in this region.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 79, 511–522.  相似文献

Genetic variations within and between troops of the Indonesian crab-eating macaque (Macaca fascicularis) were studied. A total of 456 blood samples were collected from 29 free-ranging troops in 19 different localities on Sumatra, Java, Bali, Lombok and Sumbawa. Blood protein polymorphisms were examined electrophoretically. Mean genetic variability within troops was estimated to be Ppoly=12.22% and =3.84%. Troops inhabiting small islands showed lower variability. Genetic differences were more marked between troops on different islands than between troops on the same island. Additionally, clinal variations of allelic frequencies at some loci were detected. The genetic features and socio-ecological and evolutionary implications are discussed.  相似文献

Aim To investigate patterns of habitat use in nineteen populations of parrots on three Wallacean islands, and examine the degree to which habitats used by a species can be predicted across islands. Location The Wallacean islands on Buru, Seram and Sumba. Methods A logistic regression method was used to relate the presence/absence of parrot species at census plots to vegetation axes derived from ‘gross’ habitat parameters such as altitude, tree sizes, and percentages of vegetation coverage at different strata. Receiver Operating Characteristic Plots were then used to test predictions of habitat use by conspecific populations on the nearby and distant islands, and by different parrot species on the same island. Results Parrots on Buru and nearby Seram tended to be associated with open-canopied lowland forests, while on the distant and low-lying island of Sumba, the preference was for closed-canopy forests at higher altitudes. There were usually close affinities in habitat usage by conspecific populations on the two nearby islands. One exception was where the species occurred on the two islands as separate subspecies. Habitat preferences on Sumba, however, were so distinct that paradigms developed for Buru and Seram failed to predict distributions on this distant island. Main conclusions For populations on more distant islands, it will usually be better to predict habitat use by considering the habitat used by other parrot species occurring on that island, than a conspecific population from another region. Conservation research programmes which concentrate parrot study on just one or two islands in every region of Wallacea may be more successful than those which ‘run through’ several islands in a group, but which miss out whole regions.  相似文献

Hanging by a Thread: Natural Metallic Mordant Processes in Traditional Indonesian Textiles. Despite the availability of synthetic dyes and the impact of significant religious, social, and economic change, textile weavers in more remote areas of Indonesia continue naturally dyed textile production as a living tradition. This paper documents mordant plants in Sulawesi, West Kalimantan, and nine islands in eastern Indonesia (Bali, Flores, Java, Lembata, Nusa Penida, Rai Jua, Savu, Sumba, and West Timor). These plants, such as various Symplocos species, are hyperaccumulators of aluminum compounds. Other plants used as sources of alkaline ash, of saponifiable oils and fats and for ritual purposes in the dyeing process, are also recorded.  相似文献

The limacoid land snail Asperitas Gude, 1911 encompasses several vividly coloured, yet poorly known species that are distributed throughout the Lesser Sunda Islands, Sulawesi, and the Moluccas. We examined the variation in shell morphology, including the use of geometric morphometrics, and reproductive anatomy of snails from Timor and several adjacent islands. These studies revealed that none of the taxa described from Timor and considered to be endemic to this island could be reliably distinguished from any of the others. In addition to the systematic ambiguity of morphological characteristics, we uncovered rather low amounts of genetic differentiation in the mitochondrial marker cytochrome c oxidase subunit I that was not consistent with the current taxonomy. Based on these observations, we conclude that there is just a single Asperitas species on Timor that exhibits notable variability in shell characters and body colour. This variability is ascribed to the combined effects of polymorphic colour patterns with locally varying selection in different habitats and along altitudinal gradients. Individuals from the adjacent islands of Flores, Sumbawa, Solor and Romang, which are deemed to represent distinct species-level taxa, exhibit similar amounts of variation in shell and body colour. They exhibit a consistent reproductive anatomy and overall negligible amounts of mitochondrial differentiation from the populations on Timor. Patterns in shell variation do not lend support to previously held ideas that different Sunda Islands harbour distinct radiations of polytypic Asperitas species. By contrast, we suggest that the taxonomic diversity of Asperitas has been overestimated for the over-reliance on shell features and that many presently accepted taxa are likely mere synonyms of fewer and more widespread species.  相似文献

Mimicry rings are present among Delias butterflies, and those butterflies are also considered to be mimetic models of other lepidopteran insects; however, experimental evidence for their unpalatability to predators is limited. In Bali and Timor, a total of three mimicry rings of Delias species are present; particularly, male and female D. lemoulti join different rings in Timor. The present study examined the unpalatability of Delias in Bali and Timor to the caged avian predator Pycnonotus aurigaster. The birds ate eight Delias species in similar numbers, and ate the palatable butterfly Mycalesis horsfieldii much more frequently than Delias butterflies. The result suggests that the three mimicry rings of Delias species in Bali and Timor are Müllerian rather than Batesian. Based on previous findings on their phylogenetic relationships, the Müllerian mimicry rings of Delias in Bali and Timor are suggested to have emerged through the convergent evolution and phylogenetic constraints of wing color patterns. In the D. hyparete species group, mimetic radiation may have occurred between Bali and Timor.  相似文献

The evolutionary significance of spatial habitat gaps has been well recognized since Alfred Russel Wallace compared the faunas of Bali and Lombok. Gaps between islands influence population structuring of some species, and flightless birds are expected to show strong partitioning even where habitat gaps are narrow. We examined the population structure of the most numerous living flightless land bird in New Zealand, Weka (Gallirallus australis). We surveyed Weka and their feather lice in native and introduced populations using genetic data gathered from DNA sequences of mitochondrial genes and nuclear β‐fibrinogen and five microsatellite loci. We found low genetic diversity among extant Weka population samples. Two genetic clusters were evident in the mtDNA from Weka and their lice, but partitioning at nuclear loci was less abrupt. Many formerly recognized subspecies/species were not supported; instead, we infer one subspecies for each of the two main New Zealand islands. Although currently range restricted, North Island Weka have higher mtDNA diversity than the more wide‐ranging southern Weka. Mismatch and neutrality statistics indicate North Island Weka experienced rapid and recent population reduction, while South Island Weka display the signature of recent expansion. Similar haplotype data from a widespread flying relative of Weka and other New Zealand birds revealed instances of North Island—South Island partitioning associated with a narrow habitat gap (Cook Strait). However, contrasting patterns indicate priority effects and other ecological factors have a strong influence on spatial exchange at this scale.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This is the first systematic treatment of the Diplommatinidae of Timor-Leste, the country that encompasses the eastern part of the island of Timor. Three diplommatinid species in two genera were recorded from the western part of the island in previous systematic literature. Based on 28 samples collected between 2010 and 2012 throughout Timor-Leste, we describe five additional species (Diplommatina atauroensis n. sp., Palaina ainaro n. sp., Palaina orelimo n. sp., Palaina tuba n. sp., and Palaina brandontrani n. sp.), raising the number of diplommatinid species on the island to eight. Two species previously described from West Timor (Diplommatina fluminis B. Rensch, 1931 and Palaina mutis Greke, 2017) were also recorded in Timor-Leste; both appear to be more widespread, the former also occurring on the neighbouring island of Sumba and possibly also on Flores, Bali and Java. However, all newly described species are known only from their type localities, all of which are on exposed limestone. They are deemed to be narrow range endemics that probably do not occur outside Timor-Leste.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been prevalent in Indonesia since 2003 causing major losses to poultry production and human deaths. Live bird markets are considered high risk areas due to the density of large numbers of mixed poultry species of unknown disease status. Understanding trader knowledge and perceptions of HPAI and biosecurity is critical to reducing transmission risk and controlling the disease. An interview-administered survey was conducted at 17 live bird markets on the islands of Bali and Lombok in 2008 and 2009. A total of 413 live poultry traders were interviewed. Respondents were mostly male (89%) with a mean age of 45 years (range: 19–81). The main source of AI information was TV (78%), although personal communication was also identified to be an important source, particularly among female traders (60%) and respondents from Bali (43%). More than half (58%) of live poultry traders interviewed knew that infected birds can transmit HPAI viruses but were generally unaware that viruses can be introduced to markets by fomites. Cleaning cages and disposing of sick and dead birds were recognized as the most important steps to prevent the spread of disease by respondents. Two thirds (n = 277) of respondents were unwilling to report sudden or suspicious bird deaths to authorities. Bali vendors perceive biosecurity to be of higher importance than Lombok vendors and are more willing to improve biosecurity within markets than traders in Lombok. Collectors and traders selling large numbers (>214) of poultry, or selling both chickens and ducks, have better knowledge of HPAI transmission and prevention than vendors or traders selling smaller quantities or only one species of poultry. Education was strongly associated with better knowledge but did not influence positive reporting behavior. Our study reveals that most live poultry traders have limited knowledge of HPAI transmission and prevention and are generally reluctant to report bird deaths. Greater efforts are needed to engage local government, market managers and traders in education and awareness programs, regulatory measures and incentive mechanisms. Understanding and evaluating the social responses to such an integrated approach could lead to more effective HPAI prevention and control.  相似文献

The blue tit (Parus caeruleus teneriffae group) is proposed to have colonised the Canary Islands from North Africa according to an east-to-west stepping stone model, and today, the species group is divided into four subspecies, differing in morphological, acoustic, and ecological characters. This colonisation hypothesis was tested and the population structure between and within the islands studied using mitochondrial DNA sequences of the non-coding and relatively fast evolving control region. Our results suggest that one of the central islands, Tenerife, was colonised first and the other islands from there. Three of the presently recognised four subspecies are monophyletic, exception being the subspecies teneriffae, which consists of two monophyletic groups, the one including birds of Tenerife and La Gomera and the other birds of Gran Canaria. The Gran Canarian birds are well differentiated from birds of the other islands and should be given a subspecies status. In addition, the teneriffae subspecies group is clearly distinct from the European caeruleus group, and therefore the blue tit assemblage should be divided into two species.  相似文献

Although Indonesia has been rabies-infected since at least the 1880s, some islands remain rabies-free, such as Lombok. However, due to its adjacency to rabies-infected islands such as Bali and Flores, there is considerable risk of a rabies incursion. As part of a rabies risk assessment project, surveys were conducted to estimate the size of the dog population and to describe dog management practices of households belonging to different ethnic groups. A photographic-recapture method was employed and the number of unowned dogs was estimated. A total of 400 dog owning households were interviewed, 300 at an urban site and 100 at a rural site. The majority of the interviewed households belonged to the Balinese ethnic group. Owned dogs were more likely male, and non-pedigree or local breed. These households kept their dogs either fully restricted, semi-free roaming or free-roaming but full restriction was reported only at the urban site. Dog bite cases were reported to be higher at the urban site, and commonly affected children/young adults to 20 years old and males. A higher number of unowned dogs was observed at the urban site than at the rural site. Data generated within these surveys can inform rabies risk assessment models to quantify the probability of rabies being released into Lombok and resulting in the infection of the local dog population. The information gained is critical for efforts to educate dog owners about rabies, as a component of preparedness to prevent the establishment of rabies should an incursion occur.  相似文献

Aim There are currently few population genetic studies on widely distributed SE Asian terrestrial organisms. We have studied the genetic diversification pattern of the giant wood spider, Nephila pilipes (Araneae: Tetragnathidae) to see whether fluctuations in rain forest extents generated by Quaternary climatic changes left signatures on populations of this agile terrestrial arthropod. Location The collecting localities were distributed in the following seven regions: (1) N Australia; (2) India (Calcutta, Karziranga and Sukna); (3) SE Asia (N Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Bali); (4) SE China (Fujian, Guandong, Hong Kong and Hainan); (5) SW China (Guangxi and Yunnan); (6) E Asian islands (Ryukyu islands and Taiwan); and (7) the Philippine Islands. Methods A total of 374 specimens were collected from the East Asian continent and islands, SE Asia, India, and northern Australia. Mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene partial sequences were used as the molecular marker to infer the phylogeographic diversification patterns. Results From the specimens collected, 67 haplotypes were identified, which could be grouped into five major clades. The dominant clade contained populations in regions ranging from Okinawa to Bali (spanning a distance of more than 4000 km), but their genetic variations were not structured and were not significantly associated with geographical distances. Three clades contained specimens collected from peripheral regions of the distribution range of N. pilipes, such as India, N Australia, and NE Asia. Members of the clade distributed in NE Asia were sympatric but those of the clades distributed in Australia and India were allopatric with those of the dominant clade. Main conclusions The results of this study indicate that, during Quaternary glacial periods, the rain forests in SE Asia might have been more or less continuous and thus generated an unstructured genetic diversification pattern of N. pilipes inhabiting this region. However, during such periods, populations in peripheral regions such as India, N Australia and NE Asia might have been isolated in refugia, thus accounting for the observed genetic divergence from populations in the SE Asian region.  相似文献

The plant from eastern Aegean islands, S. Turkey, Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria and N. Iraq is recognized as a subspecies of Paeonia mascula based on a large quantity of herbarium specimens from the major herbaria in Europe. The subspecies, Paeonia mascula subsp. orientalis (Thiebaut) D. Y. Hong, is characterized by nearly always having some leaflets segmented and the total number of leaflets and segments ranging from (9) 12 to 18 (23); leaflets and segments broadly elliptical to ovate-rounded and usually glabrous or sparsely villous on the lower surface.  相似文献

The effects of selective logging and other types of forest exploitation on bird communities are often studied latitudinally, i.e. a contemporaneous comparison of disturbed and pristine areas. Such an approach assumes that before disturbance those areas were equivalent. By comparing communities at a single site before and after disturbance, a so called longitudinal approach does not make that assumption but such studies can be resource intensive. In this study we adopt a latitudinal approach to explore the effects of disturbance on birds, but pay specific attention to whether natural geographically-based variation in the forest ecosystem may be a major contributory factor equal to, or greater than, effects of disturbance. Bird census data were collected from two Indonesian islands, Sumba and Buru. On Sumba the differences between habitat types in terms of species richness, species accumulation rates, and numbers of birds were swamped by simple site differences between the forest blocks sampled. On Buru, disturbed areas were more diverse than mature forest but it was still not possible to discount the effects of natural variation between forest areas. Although the islands support bird faunas which are rather similar in size and origin, local species diversities and abundances were significantly greater on Sumba. Substituting space for time is a common strategy in ecological research but the results of such studies should be viewed with caution.  相似文献

At the time of sperm-egg fusion in Discoglossus pictus, a large amount of electron-dense material of an unknown nature is liberated from the sperm. In the present work we studied this material in D. pictus sperm, using an assay utilising strips of autoradiographic film as a gelatin substrate for proteolytic enzymes. Upon treatment with A23187, D. pictus sperm produced a large halo on the gelatin substrate, indicating the presence of enzymes released by the sperm at the time of the acrosome reaction. In contrast, Xenopus laevis sperm did not produce halos upon treatment with A23187. The use of protease inhibitors such as TLCK, leupeptin, chymostatin, SBTI and EACA strongly suggests that the D. pictus whole acrosome contains trypsin and chymotrypsin activity while an SBTI-sensitive activity is absent in a small portion of the acrosome, possibly the anteriormost region. Furthermore, the material released at the acrosome reaction also contains an EACA-inhibited activity, indicating the presence of plasminogen activator. We conclude that D. pictus sperm release proteolytic enzyme(s) that may act at the egg surface at the time of gamete fusion.  相似文献
