Microbial communities are typically characterized by conditions of nutrient limitation so the availability of the resources is likely a key factor in the niche differentiation across all species and in the regulation of the community structure. In this study we have investigated whether four species exhibit any in situ short‐term changes in substrate uptake pattern when exposed to variations in substrate and growth conditions. Microautoradiography was combined with fluorescence in situ hybridization to investigate in situ cell‐specific substrate uptake profiles of four probe‐defined coexisting species in a wastewater treatment plant with enhanced biological phosphorus removal. These were the filamentous ‘Candidatus Microthrix’ and Caldilinea (type 0803), the polyphosphate‐accumulating organism ‘Candidatus Accumulibacter’, and the denitrifying Azoarcus. The experimental conditions mimicked the conditions potentially encountered in the respective environment (starvation, high/low substrate concentration, induction with specific substrates, and single/multiple substrates). The results showed that each probe‐defined species exhibited very distinct and constant substrate uptake profile in time and space, which hardly changed under any of the conditions tested. Such niche partitioning implies that a significant change in substrate composition will be reflected in a changed community structure rather than the substrate uptake response from the different species.  相似文献

Substrate choice, swimming activity and risk to predation by burbot (Lota lota) of the well established Gammarus roeselii and the invader Dikerogammarus villosus were studied in mixed and single-species aquarium experiments. We used stones, gravel and aquatic weeds (Elodea, Chara) as substrates. We hypothesized that both species have different substrate preferences and that substrate affects the predation risk. We also assumed that presence of D. villosus influences substrate preference and predation risk of G. roeselii since the invader is known to affect the behavior of other gammarids. Adults of D. villosus in single species experiments and juveniles in mixed and single species experiments were evenly distributed over the different substrates but adults in mixed species experiments were more likely to prefer stone substrate. In contrast, adults and juveniles of G. roeselii clearly preferred aquatic weeds independent of the presence/absence of the invader. Both species preferred substrates with fissured surface over substrates with smooth surface. Gammarus roeselii was observed swimming more often than D. villosus in the open water but its swimming activity was lower when its preferred substrate was present compared with its swimming activity if non-preferred substrates were present. Predation rate of burbot on D. villosus was comparatively low and independent of the substrate. Burbot consumed many more G. roeselii than D. villosus, both in mixed and single species experiments. But when the preferred substrate of G. roeselii (weeds) was used in the experiments, predation rate of burbot on G. roeselii was somewhat lower than that when non-preferred substrates were present. The results of the experiments support our hypothesis that the gammarids studied here have different substrate preferences and that presence of the preferred substrate can affect predation risk. However, there is no evidence that presence of D. villosus affected substrate choice or predation risk in G. roeselii. We consider that differences in use of spatial niches permit co-existence of G. roeselii and D. villosus in the wild when substrates are diverse. The fact that G. roeselii than D. villosus is more often observed swimming in the open water may explain its higher risk of being captured by fish.  相似文献

The paper focuses on the effect of a nine-year utilisation of the peat-bark substrate and crop rotation of six main forest tree species on changes in the substrate enzymatic activity during successive rotation cycles. The study was conducted in the forest nursery in the years 1989–1997. Seedlings of Scots pine Pinus sylvestris, Norway spruce Picea abies, European larch Larix decidua, pendiculate oak Quercus robur, common beech Fagus silvatica, and silver birch Betula overrucosa were grown on peat-bark substrate. The activity of soil enzymes: betaglucosidase, invertase, urease, asparginase, acid phosphatase and dehydrogenases was assessed. The succession of three 3-year crop rotation cycles with species following each other according to the rotation plan was subject to observations. The obtained results have confirmed recent suppositions that the tree species and their rotation modify soil enzymatic activity. The enzymatic activity of the peat-bark substrate changed after each three-year crop rotation cycle and decreased with time. After the second crop rotation cycle the activity of betaglucosidase, urease, asparginase was found to be lower, and the activity of invertase and dehydrogenases — higher. After three crop rotation cycles the positive effect of appropriate species rotation on the enzymatic activity of the substrate was noted.  相似文献

Effects of learning in two microhabitat specialists, Leptopilina boulardia Barbotin et al. and L. fimbriata Kieffer were compared to previous and new results of learning in the microhabitat generalist L. heterotoma Thomson. Females were given one or more oviposition experiences on hosts in different types of substrate. In all species oviposition experience affected the choice for a substrate, although this effect of learning was considerably less in L. fimbriata compared to the other two species. Patch times, known to be highly determined by experience in the generalist L. heterotoma, were much less flexible in the specialists. L. boulardi and L. fimbriata have fixed patch times on their natural substrate and have variable patch times on other substrates only. In all three species one oviposition affected the choice for a substrate. Additional ovipositions showed no different effect. An accumulative effect of the number of ovipositions on patch times was found in L. heterotoma only. Retention of the learning effect was only studied in L. boulardi, and was shown to be similar to that reported for L. heterotoma, i.e. two to three days. Although learning was found in both the generalist and the specialist species studied, it seems to affect their foraging behaviour differently.  相似文献

Summary Leaf-eating invertebrates selectively ingest leaf areas rich in fungal cells. The effect of this process on coincident and cumulative species diversity (species numbers and evenness) of the fungi was studied on 3 substrates (oak leaves, larch and spruce needles) in 2 hardwater and 2 softwater streams. Cumulative species number of colonizing fungi follows the equation S=k·A z(A=area below decay curve of the substrate, k=substrate-specific constant, Z=0.47). Higher feeding activity means faster weight loss of the substrate which leads to lower species richness of the fungi. The opposite is true for early successional stages on larch needles. Evenness of the fungi (distribution of individuals among species) is negatively correlated with feeding intensity by invertebrates, as measured by increased decay rates. The overall effect of leaf-eating invertebrates on aquatic hyphomycetes resembles that of potent competitors preempting substrate otherwise used by a late successional tail of relatively rare fungi.  相似文献

In a temperate riparian forest, the effects of substrate types, canopy gaps and conspecific seedfall density were investigated on the seed-to-seedling process for the five dominant species (Aesculus turbinata, Fagus crenata, Acer mono, Pterocarya rhoifolia and Cercidiphyllum japonicum). Densities of seedfall and subsequent seedling recruits were measured in the stand over a period of 6 years. A model assuming that local density of seedling recruits is proportional to seedfall density in the preceding year significantly explained a spatial variation in seedling recruits for all species. Several environmental factors were then added. Substrate composition had a positive effect on P. rhoifolia and C. japonicum. P. rhoifolia was favored by gravel substrate, which also explained the adult distribution of this species in this forest. C. japonicum appeared to be facilitated by a mineral-soil substrate. However, the distributions of this substrate and adults of C. japonicum did not follow each other closely. A. mono was negatively affected by gaps, and F. crenata was negatively affected by conspecific seedfall density. In contrast, A. turbinata was not significantly affected by any of the environmental factors tested. The microenvironmental heterogeneity in this forest explained species coexistence to a limited extent in the context of seed-to-seedling processes. Performances at later stages of the life-cycle and/or catastrophic disturbances (e.g. landslides) might have a stronger influence on species coexistence in this forest.  相似文献

The relationship between caddisfly assemblage structure and four selected environmental variables (substrate, water depth, flow type and amount of the coarse particulate organic matter) was investigated in a Slovenian lowland stream. Caddisflies were sampled at four stream reaches according to selected microhabitat types. All together, 168 quantitative samples were taken at 21 sampling points between October 1998 and July 1999. Of 48 collected species, 30 were included in the analysis. Significant correlation was observed between species and environmental variables. As a complement to a CCA biplot representation, species assemblages within the community were also determined using cluster analysis. Nine groups and subgroups were established. Most caddisfly species prefer coarse substrate in shallow water (5–10 cm) with chute water flow, whereas few species were found on fine substrate in deep water. A significant positive correlation was found between mean substrate size and total number of species, and between indices of species richness and diversity, whereas depth did not show any correlation with these parameters. Seven species were found mostly in marginal habitats, whereas four (Potamophylax rotundipennis, Anabolia furcata, Athripsodes bilineatus and Lithax obscurus) did not show any strong preferences for selected parameters. In addition, habitat preferences were associated with the feeding types of the caddis larvae.  相似文献

Samples of a calcareous conglomerate rock colonized by Squamarina cartilaginea and a siliceous schist colonized by Acarospora scotica were cut and examined with SEM-backscattered electron imaging. Both species produce extensive rhizomorphs (sensu lato), whose component hyphae interpenetrated, separated, and incorporated substrate particles in the course of development. Rhizomorph expansion and contraction associated with hydration cycles could also detach adherent fragments within the substrate. In S. cartilaginea, rhizomorphs and associated hyphae also directly penetrated the calcareous substrate matrix, probably by chemical dissolution. Those of A. scotica appeared to penetrate the schist mainly by forcing their way between the fine, angular, somewhat flattened particles which comprises the substrate. The orientation of these particles influenced the form of developing rhizomorphs and the subsequent pattern of substrate exfoliation. Lichen compounds of potential biode-teriorative significance occurred within the squamules of both species but were not detectable in their rhizomorphs. Lichenized photobionts were abundant within the substrate; their developmental relationship to epilithic squamules could be demonstrated in the case of A. scotica.  相似文献

The results of a long investigation (20 years) on bryophyte diversity of 28 Sicilian caves are reported; the study regarded both karstic and volcanic caves, located at altitudes ranging from 15 to 2030 m a.s.l. The bryophyte diversity consists of a total of 136 taxa, 20 liverworts, 3 hornworts and 113 mosses. The ecological analysis was performed using the Ellenberg indicator values for moisture, light and soil reaction to the substrate. On the whole, mesophytic and meso-hygrophytic, sciophytic and photo-sciophytic species strongly prevail independently from the geological nature of the caves; the values of the soil reaction to the substrate well reflect the characteristics of the substrate. The phytogeographical analysis shows the prevalence of the Mediterranean species, followed by the temperate and southern-temperate species. It is remarkable the occurrence of boreo-arctic-montane species, which find refuge for their survival in some high-altitude caves. Some typical species well adapted to the cave environment are reported, including Amphidium mougeotii, Isopterygiopsis pulchella, Thamnobryum alopecurum and Rhynchostegiella tenella, showing a troglophilous character. The occurrence of species of phytogeographical significance, as well as of conservation interest, e.g. Ptychostomum cernuum, Tortula bolanderi, Rhabdoweisia fugax, Grimmia torquata, Brachytheciastrum collinum, very rare in Italy, is emphasized too.  相似文献

The effect of 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) and the juvenile hormone (JH) on the activity of the arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AANAT) was studied in young females of wild-type D. virilis and D. melanogaster. 20E feeding of the flies led to a decrease in AANAT activity in both species when dopamine (DA) was used as substrate, but did not affect the enzyme activity when octopamine (OA) was used as substrate. JH application increased AANAT activity with DA as substrate in both species, but did not change it with OA as substrate. AANAT activity was also measured in young females of a JH-deficient strain of D. melanogaster, apterous 56f . A decrease in the enzyme activity was observed in the mutant females as compared to wild-type. Mechanisms of regulation of DA level by gonadotropins in Drosophila are discussed.  相似文献

Synopsis Relationships between quantitative measures of habitat type and the biomass of Chaetodon, Scarus and Parupeneus species were investigated across 35 reef sites in the Inner Seychelles Group. Multiple regression was used to determine the proportion of variance in biomass between sites which could be explained by depth, exposure, vertical relief, topographic complexity, live coral cover, coral rubble cover, rock cover, sand cover, underlying carbonate substrate, underlying sand substrate, underlying rock substrate and an index of fishing intensity. A significant proportion of the variance in biomass was explained by habitat variables and the index of fishing intensity for 7 of 12 Chaetodon species (23–52% of variance explained), 3 of 6 Parupeneus species (33–40%), and 10 of 13 Scarus species (14–46%). Within genera, different groups of habitat variables explained the variance in biomass for different species and, of the variables studied, only the proportion of underlying sand substrate failed to explain a significant proportion of the variance in biomass for any species. Quantitative relationships between the biomass of Chaetodon and habitat were often in accordance with those suggested by previous studies of their ecology, life-history and distribution at other Indo-Pacific locations. However, the habitat associations of the Parupeneus and some Scarus species have not been studied at other locations and clearly warrant further investigation. It was concluded that habitat was an important determinant of the distribution of many Seychelles reef fishes, but that the habitat variables examined were rarely the most important determinant of biomass. However, the inclusion of a procedure to collect habitat data provided a useful means by which to reduce the unexplained variance associated with visual census biomass estimates and therefore improves the possibility of elucidating the effects of other factors on the biomass of Seychelles reef fishes.  相似文献

The dominance of Corallina thalli in an intertidal algal assemblage was examined by a series of algal removal experiments to test the hypothesis that other tam are competitively excluded from rock substrate. An alternate explanation, that environmental factors seasonally filter out taxa leaving Corallina as the only alga adapted for year to year survival, was considered. Development of vegetation on patches of naturally exposed bare rock was monitored and compared with manipulated surfaces. Thalli of several species were selectively removed from exposed surfaces and intact turf;. changes in tam occupying primary substrate were recorded over more than three years. No significant differences in mean percent cover for Corallina, Lithothrix, bare rock, or algal crusts were found among treatments. Except for initial growth of colonizing species, abundances of other species dad not increase in the absence of Corallina. Large amounts of rock remained bare or intermittently covered by transient populations of short-lived algae. Data from single quad-rats, where individual clumps of Lithothrix were followed from month to month, indicated that the continued presence of this co-occurring and often abundant species depended on turnover of short-lived thalli rather than persistence of the same clumps. No interactions were found among the several categories of species that appeared after rock substrate was cleared. Most species were the same ones that grew, epiphytically in intact turf at the same time. In control quadrats Corallina maintained 59-95% cover while slowly increasing on surfaces earlier exposed. I predict that Corallina species will regain their dominance in the absence of competitors for primary substrate if the slowly spreading basal crusts remain undisturbed. Morphological and life history characteristics are identified that adapt Corallina to its dominant role in this habitat.  相似文献

This paper describes the macroflora and macrofauna associated with two bull kelp species,Laminaria hyperborea andL. digitata, at the island of Helgoland, North Sea. During a study period of seven months (March–September 1987), 29 macroflora species and 125 macrofauna species were found. The dominant taxonomic groups were Polychaeta (25 species), Bryozoa (17), Amphipoda (14), Hydrozoa (10) and Ascidiae (8). The species maximum was in July. In general,L. hyperborea was preferred as a substrate for settlement toL. digitata. Composition of the communities associated with kelp changed during the season according to exposure to wave action, and according to location on the kelp thallus. The rhizoid community of both kelps bore more species at exposed locations. Wave-exposedL. digitata lacked obvious faunal settlement on both phylloid and cauloid. Phylloid and cauloid ofL. hyperborea were chosen as an attractive substrate at both sheltered and wave-exposed locations, showing an association of encrusting bryozoan and hydrozoan colonies.  相似文献

Spring fens are isolated treeless wetlands of a high conservation value. Their environmental conditions are strongly related to their groundwater chemistry, which controls species distribution within various groups of organisms. Clitellates, a dominant group of non-insect aquatic fauna, however, have never been studied in these habitats. It is unclear from previous studies to what extent the distribution of aquatic non-insect taxa reflects water chemistry rather than the substrate structure. We studied 34 spring fens sampled in 17 isolated sites in the Western Carpathian Mountains to determine mainly the effects of water chemistry and substrate structure on variation in species richness and composition of clitellate assemblages as examples of the non-insect fauna. A total of 34 taxa were found, with 3–15 taxa collected per sample. Species richness was negatively correlated with water mineral concentration measured as water electric conductivity (r = −0.57, P < 0.001) and positively with TOC (r = 0.60, P < 0.001). Surprisingly, the lowest number of taxa was found in calcareous fens and richness increased towards Sphagnum-fens. There was a species turnover related to changes in mineral richness and substrate characters. The main change of species composition was promoted by changes in substrate structure. The second gradient of species composition was linked with the amount of nutrients, moisture, and dominance of sphagna, and was associated with an increase of eurytopic species in fens with high nutrient availability. It was difficult to separate the effects of water chemistry and substrate on clitellate species distributions owing to the fact that variation in tufa precipitation and vegetation was driven by water chemistry changes. This study presented the first quantitative data on fen clitellate assemblages, which appear to have an unusual pattern of species richness. In contrast to plants and molluscs, calcareous fens appeared to be a harsh environment for clitellate species. Only few specialized species, mainly Trichodrilus strandi, were able to establish viable populations. The significant effect of water chemistry on clitellate distribution patterns raises questions about the direct influence of water chemistry on non-insect aquatic taxa, which have previously been considered to be mostly determined by substrate characteristics.  相似文献

Most species preferred periphytic environments. Most species have a broad ecological range, only a few being bog specialists. In the genus Panorpa (Insecta: Mecoptera), also known as scorpionflies, premating behavior includes repeated sequences of slow wing movements (waving, fanning, flagging) which are accompanied by rapid abdomen vibrations that generate substantial substrate‐borne sound. It is still unknown whether wing patterns or vibratory signals contain information about species identity, sex and/or the quality of potential mating partners. Besides species‐specific pheromones, these multimodal signals may be of particular importance for the maintenance of reproductive isolation in sympatrically occurring scorpionfly species. Here, we analyzed phyologenetic relationships among, and the pattern of forewings as well as substrate‐borne sound in 3 different sympatric Central‐European scorpionfly species (P. communis, P. germanica, and P. alpina). Divergence time estimates, based on 879 bp of the mitochondrial COI gene, indicate longstanding separate evolutionary histories for the studied Panorpa species. Morphological analysis revealed that wing length as an indicator of body size increased in the following order: P. alpina < P. germanica < P. communis. Individuals can be assigned to the correct species and sex with high accuracy just by evaluation of the number of dark spots and the proportion of wing pigmentation. Despite high variability of interpulse period at an individual level, across species analysis revealed a positive correlation of average interpulse period as well as mean signal amplitude with forewing length. These results suggest wing patterns, but less likely vibratory signals, to contain information about species identity. Furthermore, receivers may be able to estimate the body size of a signaler solely on the basis of substrate‐borne sound.  相似文献

In area, New Caledonia is the smallest of the world’s 25 official biodiversity hotspots, but in many taxonomic groups, the island has the highest concentration of species on earth, particularly so in the freshwater insect order Trichoptera. This study aims at applying molecular data and morphology for estimating the real species diversity of the genus Agmina on New Caledonia and investigating potential effects of ultramafic rock substrate on diversification. A dated molecular phylogeny was applied to study diversity and diversification related to geological substrate using the dispersal–extinction–cladogenesis model, diva and Bayesian ancestral character reconstruction. More than 47 species (> 63%) were unknown to science. Initial radiation occurred on ultramafic substrate followed by several independent dispersal events to nonultramafic substrate. The rate of shift from ultramafic to nonultramafic substrate was significantly higher than the rate of shift in the opposite direction, indicating a possible cost associated with living on ultramafic substrate.  相似文献

Summary Plethodon richmondi shenandoah occurs in at least three geographically isolated talus slopes in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, U.S.A., each surrounded by a continuous population of Plethodon c. cinereus in the soil outside the talus. Distributions are contiguous but largely non-overlapping. The talus presents a much drier habitat than does the surrounding soil. Four experiments were designed to test the responses of the two species to moisture and substrate. Although shenandoah lives in a habitat generally drier than that of cinereus, both species choose the wet end of a moisture gradient and do not differ significantly in moisture preference. When given choices between a substrate of rock or soil, the two species respond similarly: neither expresses a preference when both substrates are moist and both choose soil over rock as the substrates dry, showing that substrate preference is based on moisture content and not texture. A third experiment demonstrates that cinereus suffers significantly greater mortality and loss of body water when subjected to a drying rock substrate than when subjected to a soil substrate, since the latter holds moisture longer. Thus the talus most likely presents a greater stress of dehydration to salamanders than does the soil. A fourth experiment shows that when forced to dehydrate, shenandoah survives longer, loses significantly less body water per hour, and withstands a greater loss of body water before death than does cinereus.The conclusions drawn are that cinereus inhabits areas of deep soil not due to a preference for that substrate but due to the requirement of a moist substrate, and it cannot enter the talus due to the dry conditions there. P. r. shenandoah, on the other hand, neither prefers the rocky nor the dry conditions of the talus and is probably excluded from the soil by the presence of cinereus. The survival of shenandoah in the talus is due, at least in part, to its ability to withstand the stress of dehydration for a longer period than can cinereus.  相似文献

Some introduced species compete directly with native species for resources and their spread can alter communities, while others do not proliferate and remain benign. This study compares community structure and diversity in adjacent areas dominated by the introduced alga Avrainvillea sp. or native algal species on a hard substrate reef. The biomass and species composition of 15 paired plots (30 in total, plot type based on dominance of Avrainvillea sp. or native species) were quantified. Plots dominated by Avrainvillea sp. had a significantly different assemblage of species characterized by lower algal diversity, mostly Dictyota spp. and Laurencia sp., and a higher abundance and diversity of invertebrates, such as small arthropods, polychaetes, and brittlestars. These results suggest that as Avrainvillea sp. becomes more abundant on hard substrate reefs, it will engineer a different community composed of algal epiphytes and an invertebrate assemblage more typically associated with algae in soft sediments.  相似文献
