1. The distribution of phospholipase D (phosphatidylcholine phosphatido-hydrolase, EC 3.1.4.4) was examined in the tissues of a number of plants and seeds. 2. The highest activities were found in various swollen storage tissues of certain plants: cabbage, central stalk; cauliflower, flower; celery, swollen leaf stalk; Kohl rabi, swollen stem; carrot, root; pea and marrow, seed. 3. Appreciable activity was retained in pea seeds for at least 1 year after drying. After germination and growth in the dark the total activity present in the cotyledons and also in the whole seedling decreased. 4. In the growing pea seedling (7 days old), about 3% of the total activity was in the plumule, 9% in the root and the remainder in the cotyledons. However, the activity in the root on a dry-weight basis was higher than that in the cotyledons. In both the root and the plumule the activity on a wet- or a dry-weight basis was highest in the growing tip. 5. The activity per dry weight in the roots and aerial parts of pea plants declined to low values as growth continued, but roots struck from cuttings of mature plants showed the same high activity as found in roots from young seedlings with cotyledons attached. 6. The total phospholipids present in the cotyledons of pea seeds were depleted on germination and growth. Of the individual phospholipids, phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine showed the same loss in 11 days as the whole phospholipid fraction, whereas phosphatidylinositol was decreased to a greater extent and cardiolipin and phosphatidylserine were not decreased. There was no increase of phosphatidic acid, as might have been expected if the phospholipids had disappeared through phospholipase D hydrolysis. 7. It is concluded that phospholipase D in plant storage tissues and seeds may be related to the rapid growth involved in their formation rather than being necessary for the utilization of their food reserve substances.  相似文献

Morphological defense traits of plants such as trichomes potentially compromise biological control in agroecosystems because they may hinder predation by natural enemies. To investigate whether plant trichomes hinder red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), as biological control agents in soybean, field and greenhouse experiments were conducted in which we manipulated fire ant density in plots of three soybean isolines varying in trichome density. Resulting treatment effects on the abundance of herbivores, other natural enemies, plant herbivory, and yield were assessed. Trichomes did not inhibit fire ants from foraging on plants in the field or in the greenhouse, and fire ant predation of herbivores in the field was actually greater on pubescent plants relative to glabrous plants. Consequently, fire ants more strongly reduced plant damage by herbivores on pubescent plants. This effect, however, did not translate into greater yield from pubescent plants at high fire ant densities. Intraguild predation by fire ants, in contrast, was weak, inconsistent, and did not vary with trichome density. Rather than hindering fire ant predation, therefore, soybean trichomes instead increased fire ant predation of herbivores resulting in enhanced tritrophic effects of fire ants on pubescent plants. This effect was likely the result of a functional response by fire ants to the greater abundance of caterpillar prey on pubescent plants. Given the ubiquity of lepidopteran herbivores and the functional response to prey shown by many generalist arthropod predators, a positive indirect effect of trichomes on predation by natural enemies might be more far more common than is currently appreciated.  相似文献

During 7 d of precocious maturation of soybean seed (Glycinemax), the starch content declined and soluble sugar levels increasedin patterns similar to natural seed dehydration and maturation.Total seed protein content and total seed dry weight increasedwhereas oil content remained relatively unchanged. Overall,the proportions of the constituents in precociously maturedseeds were comparable to naturally mature seeds. Precociouslymatured soybean seeds showed much the same germination and seedlinggrowth frequency patterns as naturally matured seeds. Griffithella hookeriana (Tul.) Warm. (Podostemaceae) is a thalloid plant with no true leaves, stem or root. The seeds are extremely small (1000 seeds weigh 0.809 mg) and can be germinated on moist filter paper, but the resulting seedlings fail to survive beyond 5–6 days. A technique of germinating seeds in vitro on thermocole cubes floated in Murashige and Skoog's liquid medium (MS 1/5 strength with 0.5% sucrose) in continuous light (500–1000 lux) at 27±2°C has been developed. During germination, the radicular pole emerges from the seed coat and elongation of the two cotyledons follows. Rhizoids arise from the radicular pole and secrete a sticky substance that helps the seedling to adhere firmly to the substratum. The plumular apex ceases to funciton after producing 2 or 3 pairs of leaf-like outgrowths. A lateral protuberance is formed from the primary axis below the level of cotyledons and develops into a flat, green and oval, round or tubular (branched or unbranched) thallus (up to 0.5–0.8 cm in diameter) within 65–70 days. There is a high mortality of seedlings and plants at various stages of development: about 20% senesce before the initiation of the plumule, 15–20% after the formation of the leaf-like structures and 2–4% during the thallus stage. Seeds retain 83% viability for more than a year when stored dry at 10–15°C.  相似文献

The directed dispersal hypothesis has two components: (1) non-random seed deposition by a predicted vector, which removes greater amounts of seeds to specific sites, and (2) higher seed survival and seedling establishment in these specific sites. Several studies suggest that ants perform both tasks. This study was designed to cover the processes from post-dispersed seeds to established juvenile plants of a typical ant-dispersed species. Our main objective was to determine whether Ricinus communis benefits from directed dispersal by ants to maintain its populations in previously colonized habitats. We examined whether there were differences between ant nest pile mounds and their vicinities in the: (1) densities of seeds with and without elaiosome, seedlings and juveniles; (2) performance of post-dispersed seeds (without elaiosome), which may be affected by seed density, a key feature attracting seed predators; (3) nutrient quantities; (4) number of germinated seeds and juvenile biomass measurements; and (5) ant protection of seedlings from herbivores. There were more seeds without elaiosome, seedlings and juveniles in pile mounds, and seeds with elaiosome were equally distributed. There was no difference in the number of non-removed seeds in pile mounds and in their vicinities, and there was no tendency for this difference to increase or decrease with time or with initial seed density. Apparently, there was no difference in nutrient contents in soils of pile mounds and their vicinities. Likewise, there was no difference in the number of seeds germinated and in the biomass measurements of juveniles in both soils. Ants did not provide differential protection for seedlings in pile mounds against potential herbivores. The dispersal of Ricinus seeds by ants had a marked effect on the distribution pattern of the seeds, seedlings and juveniles of this species. However, there were no additional advantages for the seeds, seedlings and juveniles in pile mounds and, therefore, Ricinus does not benefit from directed dispersal by ants to maintain its populations in the study sites.  相似文献

Cynara cardunculus L. seeds were germinated in vitro under environmentally controlled conditions. Seeds showed a 60% germination rate, and three growth stages were established based on the seedling mean relative growth rate (RGR). Root, stem and cotyledons were compared in these stages with respect to the emergence of total proteases and cardosin activity and its allocation in the seedling. In growth stage I (1st-5th post-germinative days), seedlings grew very slowly. Total proteases and cardosins were already active at the onset of seedlings in the stem. Total soluble protein remained constant in cardoon seedlings during stage I, and the content of all free amino acids (aa) but proline (Pro) was equally allocated on the 1st post-germinative day. In growth stage II (5th-10th post-germinative days), seedlings grew intensively and exhibited fully developed cotyledons. A pronounced increase in the content of all free aa up to the middle of growth stage II in both stems and roots was observed. In addition, the allocation of the total proteolytic activity and cardosins followed a gradient from the root to the seedling shoot. However, the whole seedling soluble protein remained constant up to the 7th day in and tended to peak on the 10th post-germinative day, being allocated mainly to the seedling stem. In growth stage III (10th-15th post-germinative days), cardoon seedlings exhibited the lowest mean RGR and the highest R/S growth ratio. An intensive degradation of total soluble protein present in the whole seedling except for cotyledons (ca. 5-fold) was observed. Nevertheless, in growth stage III, both the gradients exhibited by total proteases and cardosins activities between the root and the seedling shoot were enhanced, as were contents of all aa except Pro, exhibiting the highest levels in cotyledons on the 15th post-germinative day.  相似文献

Myrmecochory (seed dispersal by ants) is a prominent dispersal mechanism in many environments, and can play a key role in local vegetation dynamics. Here we investigate its interaction with another key process in vegetation dynamics—fire. We examine ant dispersal of seeds immediately before and after experimental burning in an Australian tropical savanna, one of the world’s most fire-prone ecosystems. Specifically, our study addressed the effects of burning on: (1) the composition of ants removing seeds, (2) number of seed removals, and (3) distance of seed dispersal. Fire led to higher rates of seed removal post-fire when compared with unburnt habitat, and markedly altered dispersal distance, with mean dispersal distance increasing more than twofold (from 1.6 to 3.8 m), and many distance dispersal events greater than the pre-fire maximum (7.55 m) being recorded. These changes were due primarily to longer foraging ranges of species of Iridomyrmex, most likely in response to the simplification of their foraging landscape. The significance of enhanced seed-removal rates and distance dispersal for seedling establishment is unclear because the benefits to plants in having their seeds dispersed by ants in northern Australia are poorly known. However, an enhanced removal rate would enhance any benefit of reduced predation by rodents. Similarly, the broader range of dispersal distances would appear to benefit plants in terms of reduced parent–offspring conflict and sibling competition, and the location of favourable seedling microsites. Given the high frequency of fire in Australian tropical savannas, enhanced benefits of seed dispersal by ants would apply for much of the year.  相似文献

The total cotyledon extract of soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr. var. Coker 136) seedlings underwent lipolysis as measured by the release of fatty acids. The highest lipolytic activity occurred at pH 9. This lipolytic activity was absent in the dry seeds and increased after germination concomitant with the decrease in total lipids. Using spherosomes (lipid bodies) isolated from the cotyledons during the peak stage of lipolysis (5-7 days) as substrates, about 40% of the lipase activity was found in the glyoxysomes after organelle breakage had been accounted for; the remaining activity was distributed among other subcellular fractions but none was found in the spherosomal fraction. The glyoxysomal lipase had maximal activity at pH 9, and catalyzed the hydrolysis of tri-, di-, and monoacylglycerols of linoleic acid, the most abundant fatty acid in soybean. The spherosomes contained a neutral lipase that could hydrolyze monolinolein and N-methylindoxylmyristate, but not trilinolein. This spherosomal lipase activity dropped off rapidly during early seedling growth, preceding lipolysis. Spherosomes isolated from either dry or germinated seeds did not possess lipolytic activity, and spherosomes from germinated seeds but not from dry seeds could serve as substrates for the glyoxysomal lipase. It is concluded that the glyoxysomal lipase is the enzyme catalyzing the initial hydrolysis of storage triacylglycerols.  相似文献

Endophytic fungi of 3 age classes (seeds, seedlings, and mature plants) and 5 tissue classes (cotyledons, seed coats, roots, stems, and leaves) of coastal sand dune legumes Canavalia cathartica and Canavalia maritima were assessed by plating surface-sterilized segments on malt extract agar. Forty-six fungal taxa comprising 6 ascomycetes, 33 mitosporic fungi, 2 zygomycetes, and 5 sterile morphospecies were recovered. There was no significant difference in the colonization frequency of endophytes between plant species (p = 0.4098, Student's t test). Among the age classes, endophytic fungi colonized over 90% of seedlings and mature plants. Similarly, among tissue classes, endophytic fungi colonized over 90% of root, stem, and leaf segments. Diversity and richness of endophytic fungi were higher in C. cathartica than in C. maritima. Rarefaction curves revealed a "higher expected number of species" in mature plants of C. cathartica and seedlings of C. maritima, whereas it was highest in leaves of both plant species. The most dominant endophyte, Chaetomium globosum, colonized over 50% of the root, stem, and leaf segments of C. maritima and over 50% of the root segments of C. cathartica. The colonization frequency of C. globosum was found to be 5%-12.5% in seeds and increased up to 40%-64.4% in seedlings or mature plants. Halosarpheia sp. was the only marine fungus recovered among the endophytes.  相似文献

Some studies on the effects of xanthine oxidase inhibitor allopurinol [4-hydroxypyrazolo(3,4-d)pyrimidine] on allantoin metabolism of soybean plants (Glycine max cv. Tamanishiki) are reported. Soybean seedlings, aseptically germinated for 96 hours on agar containing 1 millimolar allopurinol, contained only slight amounts of allantoin, allantoic acid, and urea as compared with controls. Analysis of purines and pyrimidines of the allopurinol-treated seedlings showed marked accumulation of xanthine both in the cotyledons and seedling axes. No hypoxanthine accumulation was found. Xanthine accumulation due to allopurinol treatment was relatively low after the cotyledons had fallen. For nodulated plants, allopurinol caused a significant drop in allantoin (+allantoic acid) in the stems and nodules, accompanied by a striking accumulation of xanthine in the nodules. The xanthine concentration in the nodules far exceeded that in the germinated seedlings. Allopurinol at a concentration of 50 micromolar strongly inhibited xanthine oxidase prepared from soybean nodules.

The results suggested that the main pathway of allantoin formation in soybean plants was through purine decomposition, via xanthine-uric acid. It was specially noted that a very active purine-decomposing system existed in soybean nodules.

对经“神舟4号”卫星搭载后的SP2代凤仙花的形态变异进行了研究。结果表明:子叶数目除有了两片的外,尚有三片和四片的。子叶形态上出现连生子叶、杯状子叶和大小不等子叶。真叶的形态上出现线状披针形,其小孢子母细胞减数分裂不正常,小孢子不育。花的结构上出现花瓣增多和花的叶化现象。茎的分枝上,有的不分枝,仅具主茎,有的分枝多达40枝以上。这些变化对研究和认识航天诱变育种有一定的理论和实际的意义。  相似文献

The natural patterns of myrmecochory are disrupted by the dominance of red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) in the southeastern United States. This leads to questions about the role of fire ants as seed dispersers. We examined the fate of ant-dispersed seed in the longleaf pine ecosystem. First, we determined removal rates for a suite of common ground cover species. Then, we verified the final location of removed seeds by using a wax cast to examine nest contents, and locating dyed seeds deposited in trash piles on the ground surface. Finally, we determined if the germination rate of seeds deposited by fire ants was affected by ant dispersion. Fire ants were most attracted to elaiosome-bearing seed and collected nonelaiosome-bearing seed at a much lower rate. No seeds were found in the contents of wax castings of fire ant nest chambers, suggesting that seed is not stored within the nest. Of the dyed seeds that we presented to fire ants, 30–40 % were recollected in surface trash piles in the mound vicinity within 1 week following removal. Undiscovered seeds were considered destroyed or buried in foraging tunnels. A small percentage of the deposited seeds were able to germinate, but there was no difference in the percent germination between seeds manipulated by fire ants and the control. Low germination was likely due to a high percentage of immature seeds used in the study. Our findings support a growing body of evidence that fire ants facilitate the movement of seeds in the longleaf pine ecosystem.  相似文献

The activities of adenosylhomocysteinase (EC 3.3.1.1) and adenosine nucleosidase (EC 3.2.2.7) were assayed in extracts from yellow lupin (Lupinus luteus L.) cotyledons at different stages of seed formation and seedling development. Adenosylhomocysteinase activity was demonstrated in all the cotyledon extracts examined. Its lowest level was found in the dry seeds and the highest, in 4-day-old seedling cotyledons. Extracts from the cotyledons of maturating seeds, dry seeds, and seedlings up to the second day of growth exhibited no adenosine nucleosidase activity. Adenosine nucleosidase activity appeared in the cotyledons of 2-day-old seedlings and its highest level was reached in 4-to 5-day-old seedlings. There is no inhibitor of adenosine nucleosidase in the maturating and dry yellow lupin seeds. No activator of a possible zymogen form of adenosine nucleosidase from maturating or dry seeds occurs in the growing seedlings.  相似文献

Schismus arabicus, a desert annual grass, is one of the most common pasture annuals in the deserts of Israel and Asia. S. arabicus exhibits a unique set of adaptations and survival strategies, which enable it to germinate, develop and produce seeds even in years with annual rainfall of less than 100 mm. The current study examined whether an annual rhythm exists in the survival ability of S. arabicus seedlings exposed to desiccation. Our results indicate that survival of S. arabicus seedlings after six different periods of 7 to 42 days of desiccation depended on the month of germination of the caryopses (seeds). Seed germination was 80–100% in all experiments, regardless the month of germination; however, seedlings that germinated in different months varied in their root and shoot elongation rates. None of about 2,500 seedlings that germinated in July (in each of the 4 years) survived the desiccation treatment. The percentages of surviving seedlings in each month of June from 2002 to 2005 were less than 40%. In contrast, over 80% of the seedlings that germinated in each of the months of December and January survived after the desiccation periods of 7–42 days. Seedlings that survived were transferred to 5 L soil pots in which the seedlings developed into mature plants, completed their life cycle and produced seeds that germinated well. The current study demonstrated a novel phenomenon indicating that seedling survival in plants may depend on an annual periodicity according to the date of germination.  相似文献

Seed size is normally distributed for many annual species, while mature plant size is frequently positively skewed. A study was conducted to determine the influence of seed size and the role of genetic differences in determining relative seedling size for Ludwigia leptocarpa. Seed size had a significant effect on percentage germination and time of seed germination but no effect on dry weight or leaf area of seedlings. Seed size and spacing had a significant effect on seedling dry weight for plants grown under competition, while relative day of emergence had no effect. Familial (genetic) differences were found in average seed weight between maternal plants, but not in average number of days to germination, average weight of seeds which germinated, or shoot dry weight. It is concluded that neither seed size alone nor genetic differences between plants are directly responsible for the development of size hierarchies in Ludwigia leptocarpa populations. Large seed size does convey an advantage in growth when plants from seeds of differing initial size interact.  相似文献

Non-myrmecochorous plant species are able to colonize Formica polyctena mounds. Galium aparine has been chosen as a model to study this kind of ant-plant association. In order to understand benefits to ants and plants, we have studied removal rates of fruits by ant workers, and compared soil seed material, seedling pattern and development of plants of the nest versus forest.Ant workers remove fruits at very low rates; removal time for half of the sample of 10 seeds was on average 5 h. Removed fruits were usually lost within 20–30 cm distance of the ant route. The soil samples from the nests contained a higher number of fruits, than those from randomly chosen sites in the forest. Seeds start to germinate in late August; on the F. polyctena mounds significantly earlier than at surrounding places. The seedling density was higher within experimental quadrats located on mound sites especially in late September–early October. The highest density of seedlings was on the slope of the mound. Plants from mounds are significantly longer, have a higher number of nodes during all stages of development and a higher mortality rate than that at surrounding places.The interactions between G. aparine and F. polyctena ants are asymmetrical. In spite of higher mortality rate of seedlings on mounds, ants provide some benefits to the plant. Firstly, workers are additional dispersal agents for G. aparine fruits. Furthermore, the soil peculiarities of ant mounds are beneficial for seed germination and seedling growth. G. aparine does not provide ants with energetically valuable food like plants with elaiosome-bearing seeds. Moreover, the high density of seedlings and plants on the mounds shades the nest.  相似文献

Diamine oxidase (DAO, EC 1.4.3.6.) activity and polyamine content were measured in the shoot apex, leaves, epicotyl, cotyledons, hypocotyl and roots of light-grown bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Lingot) and soybean ( Glycine max L. cv. Sakai) seedlings at 3 different stages of germination (5, 8 and 14 days) as well as in embryos and cotyledons from soaked seeds. No DAO activity was detected in embryos and cotyledons of either plants. In bean seedlings DAO activity was only detectable in the shoot apex, primary leaves and cotyledons, while in soybean the activity was only detectable in the hypocotyl and roots. During seedling growth, in both plants, a different pattern of DAO activity was observed. In both species spermidine and spermine were the most abundant polyamines in embryos and cotyledons. Cadaverine, absent in bean, was only detected in soybean embryos. In the seedlings of both plants, increasing gradients of putrescine, spermidine and spermine from base to shoot apex were found. A high concentration of cadaverine was present in soybean hypocotyls and roots. A possible correlation between DAO activity and the endogenous content of the preferential substrate is discussed in relation to the possible involvement of the enzyme in regulating the cellular level of polyamines.  相似文献

 北京东灵山区的人工油松(Pinus tabulaeformis)林中常常混生有萌生的辽东栎(Quercus wutaishanica)种群。局部地带辽东栎与油松形成混交林,在山脊及山坡上部一些特殊生境辽东栎甚至取代油松林成为优势种。为了探讨北京东灵山区辽东栎林的天然更新机制及辽东栎幼苗在人工油松林中的天然更新,在油松人工林的林下和林缘两种生境条件下将辽东栎种子播种于2 cm深的土中,对辽东栎幼苗的补充和建立进行了对照试验。结果显示,在辽东栎结实丰年,两种生境条件下播种后辽东栎种子丢失差异并不显著,而辽东栎幼苗补充和建立方面的差异极显著。由于森林动物特别是啮齿类动物的活动对辽东栎幼苗建立的影响具有二重性:消耗种子与促进萌发,本试验特别关注辽东栎幼苗子叶丢失现象及其丢失后果。由于辽东栎种子萌根较早,在幼苗出土前其粗大的主根长达10~20 cm,并已初步形成根系,表明已有相当比例的营养物质从子叶转移到根部。因此当幼苗出土后如果仅仅只是子叶的丢失对辽东栎幼苗的成活和生长均无明显的影响。通过研究发现辽东栎幼苗期子叶丢失有3种形式:1)仅丢失子叶,幼苗其它部位未受伤害,多发生在林缘生境中,占发芽坚果的29.69%;2)整个幼苗连根被拖出地面,多发生在林下生境,占62.43%;3)在子叶与根颈的连接处主干被咬断,林缘为50.88%,显著高于林下的8.41%。但只有后两种形式才导致幼苗死亡。导致这些现象的原因是由于林缘土壤腐殖质含量低,比较干燥,土质较坚实,以及幼苗出土前坚果主根生长得较长等缘故,当幼苗遭受动物捕食时不会轻易地被拖出地面,拖走的往往仅仅是子叶。至生长季节结束,林缘样方辽东栎幼苗的成活率接近20%,茎干平均高度7.94 cm,芽数11.24·株-1,叶片平均干重为81.14 mg·株-1,且几乎全部由丢失子叶的幼苗所构成;而林下样方辽东栎幼苗的成活率不足2%,茎干平均高度4.74 cm,芽数7.52·株-1,叶片平均干重仅为42.27 mg·株-1,以未丢失子叶的幼苗为主。试验结果表明,林缘及类似林缘的环境条件更有利于辽东栎的实生更新。  相似文献
