It has been documented that social isolation imparts deleterious effects on gregarious rodents species,but caging in group imparts such effects on solitary rodents. This study was attempted at examining how kinship to affect body weight,behavioral interaction,mate choice and fitness when we caged male and female rat-like hamsters Tscheskia triton in pair,a solitary species. We found that females paired with nonsibling males became heavier than the females paired with sibling males,but both agonistic and amicable behavior between paired males and females did not differ between sibling and nonsibling groups. This indicated that kinship might reduce females' obesity in response to forced cohabitation,and dissociation might exist between physiological and behavioral responses. Furthermore,binary choice tests revealed that social familiarity between either siblings or nonsiblings decreased their investigating time spent in opposite sex conspecific of cage mates and/or their scents as compared with those of nonmates,suggesting effects of social association on mate and kin selection of the hamsters. On the other side,both females and males caged in pair with siblings show a preference between unfamiliar siblings or their scents and the counterparts of nonsiblings after two month separation,indicating that the kin recognition of the hamsters might also rely on phenotype matching. In addition,cohabitation (or permanent presence of fathers) elicited a lower survival of pups in nonsibling pairs than sibling pairs,but did not affect litter size,suggesting that kinship affects fitness when housing male and female ratlike hamsters together. Therefore,inbreeding might be adapted for rare and endangered animals.  相似文献

Male and female prairie deermice housed singly from weaning (21 days) until 40 days of age had urine from one of the following sources applied daily to their nostrils: sexually mature laboratory population males or females, and sexually mature breeder males or females from our laboratory colony. Other males and females were treated with water. Records were obtained of the weights of the tests, seminal vesicles and bacula of males and the ovaries and uteri of females at 40 days of age. The major results of this study were as follow: Female urine from sexually mature and inhibited population or isolated mice stimulated the development of the male reproductive organs significantly more than water or male urine. Male urine applied to young males did not differentially affect the weights of their reproductive organs compared with water and thus showed no inhibition effects. The reproductive organs of females treated with male urine did not differ significantly in weight from those of females treated with female urine. Females treated with water developed significantly larger uteri than those treated with urine from sexually mature population females (P≤0.02), inhibited population females (P<0.001) and inhibited population males (P<0.007).  相似文献

Apple maggot females, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh), were maintained (with males) singly or in groups of 5 in laboratory cages without fruit from eclosion until 15 days of age (when males were removed). When hawthorn, apple or artificial fruit were introduced on Day 16, females caged in groups laid significantly more eggs per female, irrespective of fruit type, than females caged singly. A follow-up laboratory experiment revealed that the oviposition-enhancing effect of grouping was due largely or exclusively to caging regime on day of access to fruit and not to prior caging regime. Subsequent laboratory-cage tests indicated that none of the following factors contributed significantly to the oviposition-enhancing effect of grouping under laboratory cage conditions: odor of fruit punctures, odor of eggs, odor of marking pheromone, or presence of other females on fruit, all as potential stimuli eliciting female attraction to fruit; or presence of fruit punctures, eggs, or marking pheromone, all as potential oviposition-enhancing stimuli following alighting on a fruit. The only contributing factor of significance uncovered here was the enhanced propensity of an arriving female to bore into a fruit shortly after encounter with an occupying female engaged in ovipositional behavior. We consider such enhancement as suggestive of socially facilitated egglaying behavior, which we discuss.  相似文献

Data from published sources about size and composition of wild common marmoset groups (Callithrix jacchus) were analyzed to see if the number of juveniles in a group is closely related to the number of other group members. Mean group size was 8.7 members including 4.4 adults (1.8 females, 2.5 males), 2.9 subadults, and 1.4 juveniles. The number of juveniles was significantly positively correlated to the number of adult males. Groups with one or two adult males had significantly fewer juveniles (mean: 1:1 juveniles) than groups containing more than two adult males (mean: 2.0 juveniles). Apart from a different number of subadults, results showed obvious similarities between common marmosets and tamarins of the genus Saguinus in size and composition of subgroups of adults as well as the key role of adult males in mediating the reproductive success of a breeding female. Common marmoset females seem to gain direct fitness benefits in increased reproductive success from the presence of a larger number of adult males. Whether or not other group members get fitness benefits depends on the reproductive strategy of adult males (monogamy vs. polyandry), their kinship, and on the genetic relationship of nonbreeders to the offspring of the breeding female. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Gorillas live in polygamous harem groups, generally composed of one male, several adult females, and their offspring. With an equal numbers of male and female gorillas born in captivity, however, housing gorillas in social breeding units inevitably means that some males will not have access to female social partners. Thus, the future of the captive gorilla population depends on the collective ability of zoos to house equal numbers of males and females. This study examined the behavioral profiles of two all-male groups of captive lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) to provide information on this type of housing situation. One group consisted of three subadult individuals, while the other consisted of two subadults and a silverback. Data were collected during two 6-month intervals, for a total of 284 hr. The behavioral profiles of the animals were stable over the course of the study but proximity patterns changed. Differences in feeding, solitary play, and object-directed behavior were found between groups, while no significant differences were observed in affiliative or agonistic social behavior. At both institutions, group cohesion appeared to be high, particularly between subadults; these individuals spent approximately 10% of their time engaging in social behavior and 25-50% of their time in close proximity (within 5 m). However, the Zoo Atlanta males spent significantly more time within 1 m and 5 m of each other than the Santa Barbara males, which may reflect a higher level of cohesiveness among members of the Zoo Atlanta group. The behavioral profiles of the animals in this study were similar to those found in bachelor groups of wild mountain gorillas. One notable exception was the absence of homosexual behavior between the silverback and subadults in Santa Barbara and the low frequency of this behavior between subadults in both groups. The effects on the thermogenic activity of brown adipose tissue of caging mice singly or in groups of different sizes has been investigated. At 23 degrees C the total cytochrome oxidase activity and the level of mitochondrial GDP binding were higher in mice caged singly than in mice caged in groups of three or six. At 4 degrees C GDP binding and cytochrome oxidase activity were lower in mice caged in groups of two, three or six than in mice caged singly. The mitochondrial concentration of uncoupling protein was not clearly affected by the number of mice in each cage.  相似文献

Conventional solitary caging for research rabbits precludes many postural and social behaviors. Several studies that have investigated enrichment strategies for rabbit does have found intact males usually too aggressive for paired or group housing. This study investigated the possibilities that male siblings will remain compatible if never separated from birth and that castration will improve compatibility among young sibling male rabbits. As a side benefit of pair housing for all rabbits, the larger cages (modified dog cages) allowed rest and other postures not possible in conventional single cages. In addition, there was no evidence of the stereotypies observed among individually housed rabbits. Castrated, post-weanling, male, Flemish Giant x Giant Chinchilla rabbit littermates demonstrated a significantly higher level of living together compatibly than did the intact controls. All rabbits chose to rest in close proximity or contact, although this preference was stronger in castrated males. During puberty, intact males displayed more serious aggression. We conclude that young adult littermate rabbits can live compatibly as pairs and that castration improves compatibility among males. Paired rabbits exhibit many postures and behaviors that are not possible in the small, solitary cages currently listed as minimum recommendations.  相似文献

Four groups of squirrel monkeys were observed to determine the primary basis of adult group structure. These studies included observations on (1) intact and gonadectomized males and females during and after breeding; (2) intact adults only; (3) subadults only; and, (4) a mixed group of adults and subadults. The spatial distribution of subjects in each group was used as a basic measure of social organization. It was found that for adults, regardless of hormonal status, between-sex distances were consistently greater than within-sex distances. This sexually segregated adult structure was largely attributable to the females' attaction to one another and overt rejection of the males. Subadults by themselves did not show any clear sexual segregation. However, in the presence of an adult structure, the subadults gradually manifested the segregated pattern of the adults by gravitating toward same-sex adults. These results indicate that the socialization process, rather than endogenous hormonal status, is the major determinant of adult social structure in squirrel monkeys.  相似文献

Females of the tropical weevilCleogonus rubetra oviposit into fruits of the leguminous treeAndira inermis, and larvae develop in the pulp and seed of these fruits. We hypothesized three alternative tactics by which males might secure matings. By using focal observations of males and by evaluating predictions specific to each hypothesis, we demonstrate that males search within aggregations of conspecifics for receptive females, and upon finding a suitable partner, males mount and perform courtship behavior consisting of stroking the eyes and sides of the female's abdomen. Males also stridulate and emit a sequence of short buzzing sounds. While mounted, males actively prevent rival males from mating with their partner. Males defend their mates for a mean duration of 3.7 h (including copulation). As predicted, paired males were larger than solitary individuals, although the difference was marginally nonsignificant. The overabundance of fruits relative to males, the prolonged period during which females are active, and the probability of last male sperm precedence are factors that may have contributed to the evolution of this female-defense tactic by males. Paired females were significantly larger than solitary females. We observed no competition among females for mates, and the correlation between elytron length of paired males and females was not significant.  相似文献

Objective: To determine if group housing affects the variance of body composition parameters in a highly inbred mouse strain. Research Methods and Procedures: Thirty 3‐week‐old male C57BL/6J mice were obtained from the Jackson Laboratory. Fifteen mice were housed individually, and 15 mice were housed in groups of 5/cage. Animals were fed ad libitum and maintained in the same room under a 12:12‐hour light/dark photoperiod at 22 °C for 9 weeks. Animals were killed, and fat mass, soft‐lean tissue mass, bone mineral density (BMD), and bone mineral content (BMC) were determined by DXA. At necropsy, weights of the paired epididymal fat pads, paired retroperitoneal fat pads, right inguinal fat pad, liver, kidneys, paired testes, and seminal vesicles were obtained. Results: Relative to mice housed singly, group‐housed mice showed significantly greater variance in percentage of body fat, testes weight, and BMC. Group‐housed mice tended to show greater variance in liver weights and BMD. Mice housed singly were smaller, had less soft‐lean tissue mass and BMC, and lower BMD when compared with group‐housed mice. Discussion: These results suggest that with respect to body composition parameters, mice housed singly are more similar to one another than are group‐housed mice, most likely because of a reduction in environmental (predominately behavioral/social) effects. Thus, mice housed singly may be more representative of genotypic effects on body composition than group‐housed mice. Whether other inbred strains of mice show similar responses to housing condition is unknown.  相似文献

Volatile chemosignals released by female CBA mice are shown to affect the chromosome machinery of bone marrow cells in mature syngenic males in different ways depending on the experimental conditions. Chemosignals excreted by solitary adult females decrease the frequency of mitotic disturbances in bone marrow dividing cells of male recipients as compared with the spontaneous level in control animals. At the same time, 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, a pheromone released only by females caged at high densities, increases the frequency of mitotic disturbances. A preliminary 24-h treatment of males with chemosignals excreted by solitary females reduces the effect of a subsequent exposure to 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, however, the frequency of disturbances is still higher than that in the control. The simultaneous exposure to both chemosignals results in complete neutralization of the 2,5-dimethylpyrazine effect, and the frequency of mitotic disturbances does not differ from that observed after the exposure to solitary female chemosignals. It is hypothesized that the cytogenetic effects found in male recipients depend on the social housing conditions under which female chemosignal donors were kept.  相似文献

The links between psychosocial stress, social status, reproductive function, and urinary cortisol were assessed in social groups of black tufted-ear marmosets (Callithrix kuhli). Urinary cortisol excretion was monitored in cases of intrafamily conflict (“sibling fights”) and in daughters in four distinct social contexts: in the family group, while housed singly or in same-sex pairs, and while paired with a male pairmate. Cortisol excretion was elevated in participants in intra-family conflict on the day of and the day following the conflict, relative to concentrations a week prior to or following the conflict. Daughters in natal family groups had concentrations of cortisol that did not differ from reproductively active adult females. This finding held for daughters who were either anovulatory or undergoing ovulatory cycles while in the natal family group. Natal family members and male pairmates exerted buffering effects on levels of activity in the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis (HPA) in female C. kuhli. Placing females in solitary housing led to significantly increased cortisol excretion. In the 2 months subsequent to pairing with a male partner, excreted cortisol concentrations in females declined significantly. Daughters removed from their natal family group and housed with a sister did not exhibit increased cortisol levels. These data reveal that activity in the (HPA) axis in marmosets is sensitive to psychosocial stressors, and that urinary cortisol can provide a useful quantitative measure of HPA reactivity. As in other callitrichids, delayed breeding in daughters and reproductive anomalies in C. kuhli appear to be mediated by mechanisms other than elevated HPA activity. Am. J. A variety of psychosocial factors have been shown to influence immunological responses in laboratory primates. The present investigation examined the effects of social housing condition on cell-mediated immune responses, comparing rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) in three housing conditions (single, pair, and group). Subjects included 12 adults of both sexes in each housing condition (N=36). Multiple blood samples (0, 4, 8, and 12 months) were collected for immunological analyses, including lymphocyte subsets, lymphocyte proliferation to pathogens and nonspecific mitogens, natural killer cell activity, and cytokine production. CD4(+) to CD8(+) ratios differed significantly across housing conditions and singly caged subjects had significantly lower CD4(+)/CD8(+) after the 4-month timepoint than did socially housed (pair and group) subjects. CD4(+) to CD8(+) ratios were positively correlated within subjects, suggesting a trait-like aspect to this parameter. Lymphocyte proliferation responses to all four gastrointestinal pathogens differed across housing conditions (at least at the 0.08 level), as did proliferation responses to StaphA, and the production of cytokines (IFN-gamma, IL-2, and IL-10). Proliferation responses of singly caged monkeys did not differ from socially housed monkeys and the highest levels of both IFN-gamma and IL-10 were produced by group housed subjects. The data demonstrate that social housing condition affects immune responses. While not unidirectional, these effects generally suggest enhanced immune responses for socially housed animals. Since rhesus monkeys live socially in nature, and the immune responses of singly housed animals differed from those housed socially, there is considerable motivation and justification for suggesting that the use of singly housed rhesus macaques may complicate interpretations of normal immunological responses. This may have important implications for the management, treatment, and selection of primate subjects for immunological studies.  相似文献

Life-history traits were compared in twenty-two clones of Daphnia cucullata from the pre-alpine lake Klostersee in southern Germany. Clones were kept under standardized conditions (18 °C; 16:8 L/D) both singly and with 25 females per glass. Clones belonged to two genotype groups distinguished by enzyme electrophoresis. 11 of the clones had the genotype FM at the phosphate glucose isomerase locus and 11 the genotype MM. Neonates and adults of the age class 10 to 21 days were larger in one group (FM) than in the other group (MM). The size specific growth rates within any age class depended on age and body size and differed between the genotype groups. The fecundity of young FM animals (< 16 days) was significantly higher than that of MM animals, but for older females fecundity did not differ significantly. Senescence started about 6 days earlier in FM than in MM. The data are consistent with results of a field study on Daphnia cucullata in the Klostersee (Jacobs, 1990).  相似文献

In the study of Japanese macaques, two types of male transfer between groups, defined by the age of transfer and known as bottom- or top-rank transfer, have received much attention, whereas the meaning of the period of solitary life has received very little. Male solitary life has been regarded simply as a transient state between group transfer. We found that male solitary life is restricted to a specific period in the life history of Japanese macaques living on Koshima Islet. This period started when the body weights of males and females began to diverge and ended when the body weight increase of males had stopped. Solitary lifestyle is related to the growth of adolescent and post-adolescent males. We hypothesize that a solitary lifestyle is a necessary step for adolescent and post-adolescent males to achieve their full adult growth by avoiding feeding competition with others, especially with adult females. Increments of body weight increase between 3 and 15 years were larger for the sons of lower- and middle-rank females than for those of higher-ranking females. Although the sons of lower- plus middle-ranking females grew later, they achieved a full adult body weight similar to that of sons of higher-ranking females by the age of 15. We believe that this body weight increase was achieved because of the solitary lifestyle of adolescent and post-adolescent males. In 1999, we measured the body mass of 101 wild ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) inhabiting the Berenty Reserve, Madagascar. In addition, we counted the number of ticks [Haemaphysalis (Rhipistoma) lemuris Hoogstraal, 1953] infesting their facial skin and external auditory meatuses. For both males and females, the body mass appeared to increase until the age of 3 years. With the apparent exception of infants, there were no sexual differences in body mass. Within a group, higher-ranked adult males tended to be heavier than lower-ranked males. In contrast, there was no consistent correlation between the body mass of females and their ranks. Among the study groups, there was a small difference in body mass and significant difference in the number of ticks infesting the facial skin and external auditory meatuses. In particular, lemurs of a group who inhabited an area of gallery forest in the study area exhibited the smallest values of body mass and were severely infested with ticks. Such group variations were not consistently correlated with the reproductive parameters of the study groups. Abstract Field observations of groups of the prickly forest skink, Gnypetoscincus queenslandiae (Reptilia: Scincidae), from north‐eastern Australia, that consist of different sized individuals under the same log have generated speculation about the social structure and dispersal patterns of this species. A total of 411 skinks were sampled from 12 rainforest sites on the Atherton Tableland in the Wet Tropics of north‐eastern Australia. Relatedness statistics calculated using nine microsatellite DNA loci showed that prickly forest skinks are significantly more related to animals within their own group than to those in other groups, and there is a significantly greater relatedness between subadults less than 2 years old and adults within the same group. This relationship was no longer apparent between individuals estimated to be 2 to 3 years old and adults in the same group. Thirty per cent of individuals estimated to be less than 2 years old were likely to be the offspring of an adult under the same log, whereas only 7% of individuals between 2 and 3 years old were. Using mark‐recapture techniques, movement distances between 0 and 94 m were recorded, with an average movement distance of 12.8 m, or 1.5 m per month between captures. Movements of 0–5 m were the most frequent for all ages and sexes. Subadults tended to move further per month on average than adults, but there was no difference in average movement between adult males and females. Thus I found little evidence to support a hypothesis of complex social structuring in prickly forest skinks. Rather, groups of lizards under logs appear to be a result of high, but variable, dispersal of subadults in their first 2 years.  相似文献
