Summary Thiobacillus thiooxidans is capable of oxidizing sulfur in digested sludge, while decreasing the pH value from about 5.5 to, say, 1.0 to 1.5. Insoluble metal sulfides can be solubilized through this acidification. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans oxidises pyritic ore in the presence of 6% centrifuged sludge if the pH value is adjusted to about 2.5. When mixing T. thiooxidans and T. ferrooxidans with sludge and 1% sulfur, the former acidifies the sludge and the latter oxidizes metal sulfides; together they solubilize more metal than T. thiooxidans alone. The following metals solubilized from their sulfides have been investigated so far: iron, copper, zinc, nickel, and cadmium. The possibility of recycling metals from sewage sludge with this method is discussed.  相似文献

The Effects of Bacterial Leaching on Metal Partitioning in Sewage Sludge   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The partitioning of Mn, Al, Zn, Cu and Ti ions in municipal sewage sludge was investigated before and after bioleaching processes effectuated by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans. Oxidation–reduction potential increase and pH decrease were obtained as a result of bacterial activity. A less pronounced and constant decrease was obtained with A. ferrooxidans, whereas A. thiooxidans presented a lag phase before a steep pH decrease. Metal solubilization was accomplished in experimental systems supplemented with energy source, Fe2+ for A. ferrooxidans and S0 for A. thiooxidans. Solubilization efficiency differed for each metal except for Al, and was relatively similar for either organism. Metal partitioning was conducted using a five-step sequential extraction procedure before and after the bioleaching. The results indicated that Zn and Mn ions were mostly associated with the organic fraction, whereas Cu, Al and Ti ions with the sulphide/residue fraction. The bioleaching process caused prompt solubilization of metals mostly associated with the more labile fractions (exchangeable, adsorbed and organically bound metals), whereas those associated to the less labile ones (EDTA and sulphide/residue fractions) were exchanged towards more labile fractions.  相似文献

Two patterns of solubilization of metal ions resulting from bioleaching of sewage sludge by sulphur-oxidizing Thiobacillus spp. were established as a function of pH. Chromium and copper ions required a pH of 2–3 to initiate their solubilization, whereas nickel and zinc ions had their solubilization initiated at pH 6–6.5. The patterns obtained were independent of the sludge solids concentrations investigated (10, 17, 25, 32.5 and 40 g l–1).  相似文献

The typical euryhaline clamVillorita cyprinoides (Hanley) was acclimated to copper and zinc at salinity 13 × 10−3 and < 1 × 10−3 (fresh water). Acclimation enhanced the lethal tolerance, as denoted by dose-survival curves, which was more pronounced after zinc acclimation. In fresh water copper acclimation sensitized the organisms. The copper accumulation trend was significantly changed consequent to metal acclimation, especially after zinc acclimation, indicating some tissue metal regulatory effect. Acclimation to copper equiped the organism to survive for longer periods with increased body burden of copper, while zinc acclimation supressed the uptake of the more toxic ion copper. The earlier report of increased uptake of zinc by this organism during combined exposure with copper is corelated in the present context. The role of metallothionein like protein in providing protection against metal toxicity, the environmental implication of acclimation phenomena are indicated  相似文献

Summary Heavy metal-loaded sewage sludge was leached abiotically using FeCl2 and FeCl3 which are applied in waste water treatment plants to eliminate phosphate and for coagulation. Due to the hydrolyzing nature of ferric iron, ferric chloride (100 mmll L–1) was able to solubilize more than 90% of copper and zinc and more than 80% of cadmium, with an optimal pulp density of 3% (w/v), after 10 h of exposition at 25°C. Chromium, lead and nickel were solubilized to an extent of 40–70%. With the exception of copper (redoxolysis), all heavy metals monitored were leached following the principle of acidolysis. Chemical leaching with iron resulted in a secondary contamination of sewage sludge (96 g iron per kg dry weight). The insoluble iron compounds which were precipitated for adsorbed to sludge flocks could be resolubilized with oxalic acid (100 mM, pH<3.3) up to an extent of 90%. Iron was leached by acidolysis and held in solution by complexation with oxalic acid. The pH optimum for the treatment of sewage sludge with 100 mmol L–1 oxalic acid was pH 3.3. At this pH an excessive solubilization of nutrient elements and compounds (phosphorus, nitrogen, alkali and alkali earth elements) could be avoided concomitantly leaching 75% iron. Furthermore the hydrophobicity of the sewage sludge was significantly reduced as a result of treatment with iron chloride.Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (isolated from arsenopyrite and adapted on sewage sludge) utilized ferrous iron as an energy source in the presence of chloride ions (FeCl2) as efficiently as ferrous sulphate. No toxic effects of oxalic acid onT. ferrooxidans were observed at the prevailing concentration.  相似文献

Two strains of Thiobacillus, T. ferrooxidans and T. thiooxidans, have been isolated from a bacterial inoculum cultivated during a one-year period in a 1001 continuous laboratory pilot for treatment of an arsenopyrite/pyrite concentrate. The optimum pH for the growth of both strains has been found to be between 1.7 and 2.5. Because of the high metal toxicity in bioleach pulps, the tolerance of T. ferrooxidans and T. thiooxidans with respect to iron and arsenic has been studied. The growth of both strains is inhibited with 10 g/l of ferric ion, 5 g/l of arsenite and 40 g/l of arsenate. 20 g/l of ferrous iron is toxic to T. ferrooxidans but 30 g/l is necessary to impede the growth of T. thiooxidans.  相似文献

In this study, we present the response of spinach to different amendment rates of sewage sludge (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 g kg?1) in a greenhouse pot experiment, where plant growth, biomass and heavy metal uptake were measured. The results showed that sewage sludge application increased soil electric conductivity (EC), organic matter, chromium and zinc concentrations and decreased soil pH. All heavy metal concentrations of the sewage sludge were below the permissible limits for land application of sewage sludge recommended by the Council of the European Communities. Biomass and all growth parameters (except the shoot/root ratio) of spinach showed a positive response to sewage sludge applications up to 40 g kg?1 compared to the control soil. Increasing the sewage sludge amendment rate caused an increase in all heavy metal concentrations (except lead) in spinach root and shoot. However, all heavy metal concentrations (except chromium and iron) were in the normal range and did not reach the phytotoxic levels. The spinach was characterized by a bioaccumulation factor <1.0 for all heavy metals. The translocation factor (TF) varied among the heavy metals as well as among the sewage sludge amendment rates. Spinach translocation mechanisms clearly restricted heavy metal transport to the edible parts (shoot) because the TFs for all heavy metals (except zinc) were <1.0. In conclusion, sewage sludge used in the present study can be considered for use as a fertilizer in spinach production systems in Saudi Arabia, and the results can serve as a management method for sewage sludge.  相似文献

Teniasis
The aim of this study was to investigate the changes of level of the essential elements of copper, magnesium, and zinc status in cases of teniasis in children. Copper, magnesium, and zinc levels were measured in 40 children who were positive for intestinal parasite of Taenia saginata. Scores were obtained for the positives and their 30 age- and sex-matched T. saginata-negative healthy children. The mean concentration of copper, magnesium, and zinc in blood showed no statistically difference in T. saginata-positive children than in their controls both in females (p>0.05) and males (p>0.05). However, a clear numerically decrease was observed especially in magnesium and zinc levels compared to the controls both in females and males. The average magnesium concentration in T. saginata-positive female children and male children were 20±1.9 and 22±2.2 mg/L and it was 27±2.1 and 27±2.3 mg/L in controls, respectively. The mean values of the zinc in blood were 0.76±0.5 and 0.72±0.4 mg/L in T. saginata-positive female children and male children and 0.85±0.3 and 0.81±0.5 mg/L in female and male controls, respectively. No correlation could be demonstrated between age and mean values of copper, magnesium, and zinc in T. saginata-positive females and males and controls (p>0.05). No significant correlation could be found between blood copper, magnesium and zinc levels in T. saginata-positive female and male children and controls (p>0.05). Although there was no statistical correlation observed in copper, magnesium, and zinc levels between patients and controls, there seem to be, especially in magnesium and zinc levels, a decrease, whereas no change was seen in the zinc level in children infected with T. saginata compared to controls.  相似文献

Summary In the presence of iron, which is always associated with natural sulphide ores, the percentages of copper dissolution in the bioleaching of covellite were 34 and 45 % when Thiobacillus thiooxidans and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were used together and when an indirect bioleaching with attached bacteria was performed respectively. In the latter, the percentage of copper dissolution was still higher than the percentages obtained with pure cultures (36 % with a T. thiooxidans culture and 40 % with a T. ferrooxidans culture).  相似文献

The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of the multiflora rose var. “Jatar” (Rosa multiflora Thunb. ex Murray) and the Virginia fanpetals (Sida hermaphrodita Rusby) to phytoextract heavy metals from municipal sewage sludge. The 6-year field experiment involved four levels of fertilization with sewage sludge at doses of 0, 10, 20, 40, and 60 Mg DM (Dry Mass) sludge ha?1. The increasing doses of sewage sludge were found to significantly increase the yield of multiflora rose and Virginia fanpetals biomass. They also significantly increased the content of heavy metals in these plants. The highest uptake of heavy metals by the multiflora rose and Virginia fanpetals crops was recorded at the fertilization dose of 60 Mg DM ? ha?1. Our investigations show that the Virginia fanpetals was more efficient in the phytoextraction of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Cd from the sewage sludge than the multiflora rose, due to the greater yields and higher heavy metal uptake by the former plant. In turn, the multiflora rose phytoextracted greater amounts of Pb from the sewage sludge. The analyses indicate that the Virginia fanpetals can be used for phytoremediation (phytoextraction) of heavy metals contained in sewage sludge.  相似文献

The aerobic biodegradation of lindane (γ-hexachlorocyclohexane) by a consortium of acclimated bacteria from sediment at a polluted site on the Suquia River, Cordoba, Argentina, is reported. The bacteria were acclimated for 30 days under aerobic conditions, using a minimal culture medium containing lindane (0.034 mM) as sole carbon source. Growth of the bacterial consortium decreased at a lindane concentration of 1.03 mM and was totally inhibited at 2.41 mM. The consortium showed initial lindane degradation rates of 4.92×10−3, 11.0×10−3 and 34.8×10−3 mM h−1 when exposed to lindane concentrations of 0.069, 0.137 and 0.412 mM, respectively. Chloride concentration increased during aerobic biodegradation, indicating lindane mineralization. A metabolite identified as γ-2,3,4,5,6-pentachlorocyclohexene appeared during the first 24 h of biodegradation. Four different bacteria, identified as Sphingobacterium spiritivorum, Ochrobactrum anthropi, Bosea thiooxidans and Sphingomonas paucimobilis, were isolated. Pure strains of B. thiooxidans and S. paucimobilis degraded lindane after 3 days of aerobic incubation. This is the first report of lindane biodegradation by B. thiooxidans.  相似文献

Selective enrichments enabled the recovery of moderately thermophilic isolates with copper bioleaching ability from a spent copper sulfide heap. Phylogenetic and physiological characterization revealed that the isolates were closely related to Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans, Acidithiobacillus caldus and Acidimicrobium ferrooxidans. While isolates exhibited similar physiological characteristics to their corresponding type strains, in general they displayed similar or greater tolerance of high copper, zinc, nickel and cobalt concentrations. Considerable variation was found between species and between several strains related to S. thermosulfidooxidans. It is concluded that adaptation to metals present in the bioleaching heap from which they were isolated contributed to but did not entirely explain high metals tolerances. Higher metals tolerance did not confer stronger bioleaching performance, suggesting that a physical, mineralogical or chemical process is rate limiting for a specific ore or concentrate.  相似文献

The capacity of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans to reduce different concentrations of hexavalent chromium in shake flask cultures has been investigated. A. ferrooxidans reduces 100% of chromium (VI) at concentrations of 1, 2.5 and 5 ppm, but in the presence of 10 ppm only 42.9% of chromium (VI) was reduced after 11 days of incubation. A. thiooxidans showed a lower capacity to reduce this ion and total reduction of chromium (VI) was only obtained for concentrations of 1 and 2.5 ppm, whereas 64.7% and 30.5% was reached for 5 and 10 ppm, respectively, after 11 days. A continuous flow mode system was subsequently investigated, in which A. thiooxidans was immobilized on elemental sulphur and the acidic medium obtained was employed to solubilize chromium (III) and to reduce chromium (VI) present in a real electroplating waste [30% of chromium (III) and 0.1% of chromium (VI)]. The system enabled the reduction of 92.7% of hexavalent chromium and represents a promising way to treat this type of waste in the industry.  相似文献

To investigate the possible natural development of heavy metal tolerance in VA-mycorrhizal fungi, plants of Agrostis capillaris from an uncontaminated, a copper-contaminated and a zinc/cadmium-contaminated area were examined for VA-mycorrhizal infection. During a period of 5 years (1987 to 1991) the plants of the copper-tolerant population were hardly infected, whereas the population on the uncontaminated soil showed a mean infection of nearly 60% and the zinc/cadmium-tolerant population of 40%. A detailed analysis of the surroundings of the copper-enriched site revealed the presence of VA-mycorrhizal fungi and a negative correlation between the infection rate of A. capillaris and the copper content of the soil. In contrast to the copper-contaminated soil, the abundant presence of VA-mycorrhizal fungi in the area contaminated by zinc and cadmium indicates that these fungi have evolved a zinc and cadmium tolerance and that they may play a role in the zinc and cadmium tolerance of A. capillaris.  相似文献

Particles of copper, bronze and zinc were embedded into a polymer using cold-spray technology to produce loading density gradients of metal particles. The gradients were used to identify the species with the highest tolerance to the release of copper and zinc ions. The gradients also established the minimum effective release rates (MERRs) of copper and zinc ions needed to prevent the recruitment of fouling under field conditions. Watersipora sp. and Simplaria pseudomilitaris had the highest tolerances to the release of metal ions. Copper and bronze gradient tubes were similar in their MERRs of copper ions against Watersipora sp. (0.058?g?m?2?h?1 and 0.054?g?m?2?h?1, respectively) and against S. pseudomilitaris (0.030?g?m?2?h?1 and 0.025?g?m?2?h?1, respectively). Zinc was not an effective antifoulant, with failure within two weeks. In conclusion, cold-spray gradients were effective in determining MERRs and these outcomes provide the basis for the development of cold-spray surfaces with pre-determined life-spans using controlled MERRs.  相似文献

Olestra is a non-caloric fat substitute consisting of fatty acids esterified to sucrose. Previous work has shown that olestra is not metabolized in the gut and is excreted unmodified in human feces. To better understand the fate of olestra in engineered and natural environments, aerobic bacteria and fungi that degrade olestra were enriched from sewage sludges, soils and municipal solid waste compost not previously exposed to olestra. Various mixed and pure cultures were obtained from these sources which were able to utilize olestra as a sole carbon and energy source. The fastest growing enrichment was obtained from activated sludge and later yielded an olestra-degrading pure culture of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This mixed culture extensively degraded both 14C-fatty acid labeled olestra and 14C-sucrose labeled olestra during 8 days of incubation. Longer-term incubation with pure cultures of P. aeruginosa demonstrated that >98% of 14C-sucrose labeled olestra and >72% of 14C-fatty acid labeled olestra was mineralized to CO2 after 69 days. These results indicate that olestra degraders are present in environments not previously exposed to olestra and that olestra can serve as a sole carbon and energy source. Furthermore, a common bacterial species was isolated from activated sludge and shown to have the ability to degrade olestra.  相似文献

Copper dissolution from a sulfide ore (with covellite as the main copper phase) was investigated in cultures of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans or Thiobacillus thiooxidans and in abiotic controls. In unsupplemented media, T. ferrooxidans was more efficient than T. thiooxidans. In the presence of ferric iron, the dissolution of covellite was not significantly different in cultures inoculated with T. ferrooxidans or T. thiooxidans. However, the most extraction was found in T. thiooxidans cultures supplemented with ferrous sulfate. The first results were explained by the mechanism proposed by Schippers and Sand (Appl Envir Microbiol 65:319-321, 1999), which involves polysulfides and sulfur as intermediates. This mechanism was extended to explain the behavior of T. thiooxidans culture supplemented with ferrous iron.  相似文献
