Abstract

Effects of temperature and sea water on germination behaviour of Althenia filiformis Petit seeds. - Germination capacity and energy of Althenia filiformis Petit seeds have been investigated, 90 and 180 days after ripening, to carry out a preliminary study on ecology of this species.

This species, halophite and hydrophyte, is spreaded along the coast shores of middle-west mediterranean sea and atlantic shores of Morocco, Spain, Portugal and France.

Seeds were soaked in the dark, at 10°, 20°, 30°C, in solutions at different salt concentration: sea water; sea water diluted in deionized water at ratios (v/v) 1: 2, 1: 4, 1: 8; sea water plus 26 gr/l NaCl; deionized water, as control.

The experimental results show that germination is reduced and delayed when seeds are soaked in progressively concentrated salt solutions; in sea water plus 26 gr/l NaCl seed germination is inhibited.

Seeds pretreated by soaking at 3°C for 10 days in sea water diluted (1:1) by deionized water did not show, when soaked in salt solution at weak and middle concentration, any delay in germination in comparison with unpretreated seeds. On the contrary, pretreated and unpretreated seeds sown in sea water at 30°C had shown, 180 days after ripening, a significant depression in germination values as compared with seeds sown at 20°C.  相似文献

Limonium supinum, a perennial herb with interest for the restoration and gardening of arid zones, is widely distributed in saline areas from southeastern Iberian Peninsula. Laboratory experiments were carried out to assess the effects of temperature and salinity on seed germination and on germination recovery from the effects of saline conditions after transfer to distilled water. Seed germination responses were determined over a four temperature regimes (20/10, 25/15, 30/20 and 35/25 °C; 12 h light/12 h dark photoperiod) and six salinities (0, 100, 150, 200, 400 and 600 mM NaCl). The higher germination percentages were obtained in non-saline conditions, under all temperature regimes. An alternating temperature of 20 °C light and 10 °C dark yielded the maximum germination for any saline concentration. Increase in salinity delayed the beginning and end of germination and reduced the final percentage of germination, which becomes completely inhibited at 600 mM NaCl. The adverse effect of salinity is reinforced by high temperatures (30/20 and 35/25 °C). The germination rate was also negatively affected by the increase in salinity and temperature. The final recovery percentages in high salt treatments were near 100%, indicating that exposure to high concentration of NaCl did not inhibit germination permanently.  相似文献

The seeds of Crithmmm maritimum L. were germinated floating on various concentrations of sea water up to 50% at constant temperatures of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25°C and at alternating temperatures of 5 and 15°C. 5 and 25°C. and 15 and 25°C. Significantly higher germination was obtained at alternating than at constant temperature. When two constant temperatures at which no germination occurred were alternated, good germination was obtained. There was reduced germination and increase in time of first germination as sea water concentration increased, in the absence of sea water, high temperature caused not only severe inhibition of germination but also permanent injury to the seeds. The results help to explain the germination behaviour of the species in nature.  相似文献

The collembolan Cryptopygus antarcticus Willem is potentially exposed to habitat salinities equal to (or greater than) sea water, as a result of sea spray, drying of littoral habitats, dispersal or temporary entrapment on the surface of sea water, or exposure to localized salt deposits from dense vertebrate populations on terrestrial habitats. To test the impact of this exposure on C. antarcticus, the tolerance of the collembolan to being placed on the surface of sea water and solutions of higher salt concentrations is investigated. The effects of acclimation to exposure to liquids of different salinities [44, 100 and 200 parts per thousand (ppt) sea salt] on cold and heat tolerance, as well as thermal activity thresholds, are also explored. Cryptopygus antarcticus shows > 75% survival after 10 days of exposure to both sea water and 100‐ppt salt, whereas it exhibits significantly lower survival after 5 days (60% survival) and 10 days (40%) of exposure to a 200‐ppt solution. Body water content also decreases after exposure to all salinities, and particularly to the 200‐ppt solution, in which > 50% of body water is lost after 10 days. Acclimation results in greater cold tolerance, although heat tolerance at 33, 35 and 37 °C is either unaltered or reduced. The thermal activity thresholds of C. antarcticus at both high and low temperatures are also negatively affected by saline exposure. The data demonstrate the capacity of C. antarcticus to tolerate periods of exposure to saline conditions, and also show that this exposure can enhance cross‐tolerance to low temperatures. The present study also demonstrates that salinity‐associated stress at moderately low and high temperatures narrows the thermal range of activity, thus reducing the ability of collembolans to forage, develop and reproduce. © 2013 The Royal Entomological Society  相似文献

Tomato pollen germination, pollen tube growth and respiratory activity were recorded during incubation in a liquid medium for 7 h over a temperature range of 15–35°C. Although the initial rate of respiration was highest at 30°C, both at 30°C and 35°C respiration decreased after the first hour of incubation due to high temperature impairment of germination and pollen tube growth. The total per cent germination of pollen over the 7-h period was maximal at 15°C whereas pollen tube length was maximal at 25°C. Although the production of CO2 measured at hourly intervals throughout the incubation period did not correlate to a statistically significant level with either the per cent pollen germination or the length of the pollen tubes alone, nevertheless from 2 h after the start of incubation, it closely correlated with the values for germination × pollen tube length, indicating that the respiratory activity of tomato pollen at a given time is a function of both the per cent germination and the pollen tube growth. We suggest therefore that the rate of respiration might be preferable to a simple germination test for the assessment of pollen germination ability since it expresses not only the pollen germination potential but also the growth vigour of the pollen tubes. In addition, where in vitro tests are designed to assess pollen germination–temperature interactions, they should employ a long incubation period (e.g. 7 h) to permit differences in sensitivity to temperature to be observed.  相似文献

The effects of an ecologically relevant range of salinities (2, 12, 22, 32) on thermal preferences and growth of adult mummichogs Fundulus heteroclitus were determined for fish from a southern Chesapeake Bay population. Salinity did not affect the mean temperature selected by F. heteroclitus in a thermal gradient, which was identified as 26.6°C based on observations of 240 individuals. Salinity and temperature had significant and interacting effects on growth rates of F. heteroclitus measured over 12 weeks. Growth rates were highest overall and remained high over a broader range of temperatures at moderate salinities (12 and 22), while high growth rates were shifted toward lower temperatures for fish grown at a salinity of 2 and higher temperatures at a salinity of 32. Significant reductions in growth relative to the optimal conditions (28.6°C, salinity of 22) were observed at the coolest (19.6°C) and warmest (33.6°C) temperature tested at all salinities, as well as temperatures ≥ 26.6°C at a salinity of 2, ≥ 28.6°C at a salinity of 12 and ≤ 26.6°C at a salinity of 32. Growth rates provide a long-term, organismal measure of performance and results of this study indicate that performance may be reduced under conditions that the highly euryhaline F. heteroclitus can otherwise easily tolerate. The combination of reduced salinity and increased temperature that is predicted for temperate estuaries as a result of climate change may have negative effects on growth of this ecologically important species.  相似文献

At constant temperatures between 15.6 and 32°C the incubation time of eggs ofDiatraea saccharalis (F.) was reduced by each increase in temperature. At 34°C the time decreased. Highest (98.6%) and lowest (9.9%) egg hatch occurred at 26 and 34°C, respectively. Larvae completed development at temperatures ranging from 22 to 34°C; however, only 4.4% of the larvae pupated at 34°C. Duration of the larval stage at 30°C (♂=18.1 days; ♀=19.1 days) was ca. 14 days shorter than at 22°C. Maximum rate of development in the pupal stage occurred at 28°C (ca. 6.8 days), and a higher temperature increased developmental time and mortality. Adult longevity and egg production generally were reduced with increasing temperatures and egg production was highest at 24°C (729.8 eggs/ moth). As many as 7 larval stages occurred; but most larvae completed development in 5 stages, and none completed development in less than 5 stages. The female larval stage was ca. 1 day longer than that of males, and this difference occurred primarily in the 5th stage.  相似文献

Effects of salinity, temperature and their interactions on the rate and final percentage of germination were evaluated for two populations (Msarref, Oued dkouk) of the invasive glycophyte Lotus creticus Linné, grown under arid environmental conditions of the Tunisia. Seeds that were not treated with NaCl germinated well in a wide range of temperatures. For both populations, maximum germination occurred in distilled water at 25°C and lowest germination for all salinities was at 35°C. Germination was substantially delayed and significantly reduced with an increase in NaCl to levels above 300 mm . Compared to the Oued dkouk population, final germination and germination rate of the Msarref population was completely inhibited at 300 mm NaCl. The interactive effect of temperature and NaCl concentration on final germination and germination rate was significant (P < 0.01), indicating that the germination response to salinity depended on temperature. The inhibition of Oued dkouk population seed germination at high salt concentration was mostly due to osmotic effects while ionic effects were noted at Msarref population. The germination behaviour of the Oued dkouk population would therefore imply adaptive mechanisms to saline environments, while in the Msarref population such mechanisms seem to be absent. Since seed germination is more sensitive to salinity stress than the growth of established plants, the greater tolerance to salinity of Oued dkouk population would be an adaptive feature of this population to saline environment.  相似文献

The effects of temperature, relative humidity and water activity on germination of conidia of an isolate of Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. pathogenic to the triatomine vector of Chagas' disease, Rhodnius prolixus Stål., were investigated in vitro. Germination occurred at temperatures between 15 °C and 35 °C under saturated atmosphere and the optima ranged from 25 °C to 3O °C. At the extreme temperatures tested (15 °C and 35 °C) the germination process was delayed, but germination rates reached more than 95%. Germination of B. bassiana conidia was strongly affected by moisture conditions. The availability of water, in both atmospheric and liquid conditions, caused changes in germination times as well as in germination rates. For example, at 25 °C + O.5 °C, germination took place within 20 h at 95.5% RH, whereas it needed 72 h of incubation at 90% RH. Germination times increased as the water activity declined from 0.96 aw to 0.92 aw. Below 0.92 aw, o germination was observed after a 72 h incubation time.  相似文献

Mechanical scarification of seeds ofPhaseolus mungo L. resulted in 100 per cent gormination in comparison to 90 per cent dormant control. Seeds treated with concentrated sulphuric acid for 8 min led to 85 per cent germination. Heat treatment at 70 °C for 24 h exhibited 75 per cent gormination, while boiled water treatment for 7 min caused 65 per cent germination.  相似文献

The aquatic corixid Trichocorixa reticulata (Guerin-Meneville) inhabits coastal marshes, brackish water ponds and salt ponds of high salinity, suggesting the presence of well developed mechanisms for hydromineral regulation.Groups of corixids acclimated in salinities ranging from fresh water to just above 300% sea water (100‰) were analyzed for total body water content, haemolymph ionic and osmotic levels, and haemolymph free amino acids.Results indicate an excellent ability to maintain haemolymph Na+, Cl?, Mg2+ and K+ hyperosmotic to the medium at low salinities and hyposmotic at high salinities. Calcium appears to conform closely to changes in external medium, becoming hyposmotic at very high salinities (80‰).Total haemolymph osmotic pressure was well regulated, the freezing point depression varying from 0.75°C in distilled water to 1.15°C in salinities of 100‰. Total body water was maintained at approx. 75% of the total animal wet weight at all salinities tested.Free amino acids were maintained between 40–60 mM in all tests and did not appear to change with salinity.  相似文献

Three-month ‘old’ and ‘fresh’ seedsof Talinum triangulare were subjected to various treatmentsto induce early and rapid germination. Scarification and activated carbon were the most effective treatmentsin improving total germination in fresh seeds, while the 3 and5 per cent thiourea treatments were most effective in improvingtotal germination in old seeds. Activated carbon, scarificationand 5 per cent thiourea treatments enhanced early germinationin both old and fresh seeds. Cumulative percentage germinationwas very high in fresh seeds after scarification or after treatmentwith activated carbon and 5 per cent thiourea, and lowest inseeds treated with 3 per cent thiourea and hot water. In oldseeds, highest cumulative percentage germination was obtainedwith 3 and 5 per cent thiourea treatments and scarification.Generally, higher germination was obtained with fresh seedsthan with old seeds. Partial seed-coat removal and treatment with 5 per cent thiouriaresulted in a higher rate of and cumulative percentage germinationcompared with seeds with the coat partially removed but nottreated with thiourea. Constantly high temperature (34 °C) increased both rateand total germination compared with seeds planted at room temperature(20–23 °C). Treatments that did not induce germinationwere 1 per cent thiourea, H2SO4, cold water soaking at roomtemperature, 6 per cent hydrogen peroxide and soil planting.These treatments effected less than 3 per cent germination. Stages of Metaseiulus occidentalis sensitive to photoperiod induction of diapause were determined by transferring various stadia into diapause-inducing conditions, and rearing them until adult females could be scored for reproductive condition. When eggs were transferred to 10 hr light at 19°C from 24 hr light at 25°C and the mites reared to adults, 92 per cent entered diapause. When larvae and all subsequent stages were kept under the inductive conditions, 62 per cent of adult females diapaused. Mites transferred as protonymphs into inductive conditions yielded only 10 per cent in diapause, and mites transferred as deutonymphs or newly emerged females did not enter diapause.However, adult females reared from eggs at 19°C under 12 hr light (which is near the critical photophase of 11·2 hr at 19°C) showed an unexpected sensitivity to photoperiod. Some newly emerged females oviposited upon transfer to an 8 hr photophase at 19°C. Some then stopped ovipositing and apparently entered diapause; these females resumed ovipositing after intervals ranging from 34 to 100 days. This was termed ‘switching’ into diapause. Some females reared under a 16 hr photophase at 19°C ‘switched’ also upon transfer as adults to shorter photophases—either 8 or 12 hr at 19°C. Thus, ‘switching’ may be due to transfer to shorter photophases. Promptness of mating vs delayed mating allowed ‘switching’ to be more easily detected.  相似文献

研究了厦门海区盐度和温度对北美海蓬子 (Salicornia bigelovii )种子萌发和幼苗生长的影响。结果显示, 海蓬子种子对温度变化反应非常敏感, 在15°C时发芽率最高(94%), 但萌发指数最低, 而在20°C时萌发指数最大; 在盐度5 g.L-1时种子具有最高的发芽率和萌发指数, 在盐度50 g.L-1时仍有13.3 %的发芽率, 并且各种盐度处理下逐日萌发指数均能在2天内达到最大。盐度10-20 g.L-1最适宜幼苗生长, 高盐(>30 g.L-1)具有一定的抑制作用, 主要表现为生长缓慢, 含水量和根系活力下降, 并且根的盐敏感程度大于茎。在不同盐度处理下, 北美海蓬子适应一种新的耐盐机制, 在无盐(0 g.L-1)和高盐(40 g.L-1) 胁迫下, 过氧化氢酶(catalas e, CAT)和过氧化物酶(peroxide, POD)这2种酶蛋白对盐离子效应敏感, 起主要的抗氧化作用; 相反, 生长在适宜盐度范围(10-30 g.L-1)内, 超氧化物歧化酶(superoxide dismutase, SOD)维持较高活性。研究结果表明, 北美海蓬子适宜在沿海滩涂环境条件下生长, 有望作为一种抗盐耐海水蔬菜加以开发和利用, 并进一步在污染海水净化修复中发挥可能的生态功能。  相似文献

A sterile germination study with seeds of some common phanerogamic water plants showed almost 100 per cent germination for seeds of Alisma plantago–aquatica, Baldellia ranunculoides and Nymphaea alba. Seeds of Potamogeton lucens could be germinated to about 40 per cent, seeds of Polygonum amphibium germinated sporadically while those of Cladium mariscus could not be germinated at all. Freshly harvested seeds of Alisma and Baldellia showed an ability to germinate at both 20°C and 35°C. A stratification period of one month at +4°C gave germination of all species tested, with the exception of Cladium. Potamogeton germinated in light only, the other species both in light and darkness. Treatment times for surface sterilization in disinfectants are given.  相似文献

A germination study was carried out on seeds of Clinopodium sandalioticum (Bacch. & Brullo) Bacch. & Brullo ex Peruzzi & Conti (Lamiaceae), a wild aromatic plant endemic to Sardinia. Seeds were incubated at a range of constant (5–25°C) and an alternating temperatures regime (25/10°C), with 12 hours of irradiance per day. The results achieved at 10°C were also compared with those obtained after a period of cold stratification at 5°C for three months. Final seed germination ranged from ca. 28% (5°C) to ca. 72% (25/10°C). A base temperature for germination (Tb) of ca. 5°C and a thermal constant for 50% germination (S) of 89.3°Cd were identified and an optimal temperature for germination (To) was estimated to be comprised between 20 and 25°C. Cold stratification negatively affected seed viability and germination at 10°C. Although a typical “Mediterranean germination syndrome”, could not be detected for C. sandalioticum seeds, these results were coherent with those previously reported for other Mediterranean Lamiaceae species.  相似文献

Crisp lettuce plants cv. Saladin were grown from the time they started flowering, at 20/10°C (16 h day, 8 h night), 25/15°C and 30/20°C in glasshouses on two occasions in 1985. Yields of seed increased from, on average, 15 g to 27 g and then fell to 20 g per plant with progressive increases in temperature. The number of mature florets per plant increased with temperature but the number of seeds per mature floret was lower at 20/10°C and 30/20°C than at 25/15°C. An increase in temperature reduced mean seed weight by up to 45%, seed volume by 15%, cell numerical volume density (Nv) by 27% and the number of cells per seed by 39%. Percentage seed germination reached a maximum early in seed development at the stage when the pappus appeared through the involucral bracts. Differences in percentage germination and vigour of seeds (slope test) from different temperatures were accounted for largely by the effects on mean seed weight. However, when germinated at 30°C seeds produced at 30/20°C germinated more readily than those produced at 25/15°C or 20/10°C. Seed vigour gradually increased with an increase in the length of storage after harvest, reaching a maximum after 260 days. In general, seeds produced at 25/15°C exhibited a greater variation in numbers of seeds per floret, Nv, seed weight, times of seedling emergence, seedling and mature head weight than seeds produced at lower or higher temperatures.  相似文献

At temperatures between 25 and 35°C, 100% of Prosopis chilensis seeds germinated within 24 h. At higher temperatures, the germination rate was reduced; at 50°C, seeds did not germinate. After germination at 25°C, the optimal temperature for seedling growth was 35°C and the seedlings did not grow at a temperature of 50°C. However, when germination was at 35°C, the optimal temperature for seedling growth was 40°C and some seedlings grew at 50°C, suggesting that thermotolerance was induced during seed germination at 35°C. Further thermotolerance can be induced in seedlings germinated at 35°C, by exposing them to 40°C for 2h. Under these conditions, seedlings exhibited increased growth rate at 45 and 50°C. Fluorography of SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the proteins synthesized and accumulated during 2 h at temperatures of 35, 40, 45 and 50°C in the presence of [35S]methionine revealed the expression of 11 proteins not detectable at 35°C. Most of the proteins present at 35°C also increased in expression. The temperature for maximal expression of these proteins was 45°C.  相似文献

Studies on the germination of Cassia acutifolia (senna) seedsindicated, that they were highly tolerant of salinities up to16.0 mmhos cm–1, and 50 per cent reduction in germinationoccurred, at about 20.0 mmhos cm.1. Air temperature had a significanteffect on senna germination at substrate salinities between10.0 and 25.0 mmhos cm–1. Seedling growth was more sensitive to salinity and alkalinitythan the germination stage. Young plant survival and total podyield were significantly reduced in soil salinities higher than11.0 minhoa cm–1, and this was more pronounced when plantswere irrigated at short intervals with saline waters. The sensitivityof senna to higher levels of salinities was correlated withthe higher rate of chloride accumulation in the tissue resultingin specific chloride injury. The germination of seeds of three species of forage grasses, Lolium perenne, Festuca pratensis and Dactylis glomerata, was studied after storage for 3–5 years under five different storage conditions: in aluminium foil packets at —25°C, 0°C and laboratory temperature (c. 18°C), and in manilla paper packets at 0°C and laboratory temperature. With Lolium perenne and Festuca pratensis high germination values at 3 and 7 days were obtained from seed stored at — 25 °C and 0°C in foil packets (5% moisture), but at laboratory temperatures, seed from foil packets gave lower germination values than those from manilla paper packets. At all three temperatures Dactylis glomerata germination after 7 and 14 days was higher in seed stored in foil than in manilla packages. With all three species stored in manilla packets, germination was higher after laboratory than cold storage.  相似文献
