Summary The effect of increasing concentrations of p,p DDT on dry matter production and nitrogen fixation of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) growing in pots with volcanic soils of the southern region of Chile was studied. The chlorinated insecticides content of the soils ranged from low to very high (>20 mg/kg), being associated with the amount of insecticide applied. A detrimental effect of medium and high levels of DDT on growth, dry matter production and N-accumulation of clover was observed. The effects on nodulation and nitrogenase activity were smaller. These effects were higher when nutrient solutions were used instead of soil, because of the protective effects of soil colloids.
Resumen Se estudió el efecto de concentraciones crecientes de p,p DDT sobre la producción y parámetros de fijación de N del trébol blanco (Trifolium repens L.) en condiciones de invernadero en suelos volcánicos de la zona sur de Chile. Los contenidos de insecticidas clorados de los suelos de la región son desde bajos hasta muy altos (>20 mg/kg), dependiendo de las aplicaciones. Se apreció un efecto depresivo del DDT a dosis medias y altas sobre el crecimiento, producción de materia seca y N-acumulado del trébol y un efecto menor sobre nodulación y actividad nitrogenásica. Estos efectos fueron más acentuados cuando se trabajó con soluciones nutritivas que con suelo, debido a la protección ejercida por los coloides del suelo.

Résumé On a étudié l'effet de concentrations croissantes de p,p-DDT sur la production de matière sèche et sur la fixation de l'azote par le trèfle blanc (Trifolium repens L.) cultivé en serre sur des échantillons de sols volcaniques du sud du Chili. Dans les sols de cette région, la teneur en résidus d'insecticides chlorés varie entre <1 et >20 mg/kg suivant le niveau des prelévements. Le DDT inhibe la croissance, la production de matière sèche et l'accumulation d'azote par le trèfle. De plus, nous avons constaté un effet secondaire sur la nodulation et l'activité nitrogénasique. Ces effets sont plus marqués lorsqu'on utilise des solutions nutritives au lieu de terre, ce qui est dû à une protection éxercée par les colloides du sol.

Abstract. The primary-successional sere of a Hawaiian montane rain forest was inferred from an age sequence of eight closely located ‘a’ ā flows (clinker type lava); 8, 50, 140, ca. 300, ca. 400, ca. 1400, ca. 3000 and ca. 9000 yr, on a windward slope of Mauna Loa, Hawaii. All study sites (0.2 ha each) were at 1120 — 1250 m a.s.l. with 4000 mm mean annual rainfall. The 400-yr, 1400-yr, and 9000-yr flows had younger volcanic ash deposits, while the others were pure lava. Comparisons of tree size and foliar nutrients suggested that ash increased the availability of nitrogen, and subsequently standing biomass. An Unweighted Pair Group Cluster Analysis on the samples (flows) using quantitative vascular species composition revealed that clusters were correlated with age regardless of the substrate types (pure lava vs. ash), and an indirect ordination on the samples suggested that the sequence of sample scores along axis 1 was perfectly correlated with the age sequence. Although ash deposits increased biomass, they did not affect the sequence of the successional sere. Both pubescent and glabrous varieties of Metrosideros polymorpha (Myrtaceae) dominated upper canopy layers on all flows ≥ 50 yr and ≤ 1400 yr, but the pubescent variety was replaced by the glabrous on the flows ≥ 3000 yr. Lower layers were dominated initially by a matted fern, Dicranopteris linearis, up to 300 yr, and subsequently by tree ferns, Cibotium spp., to 9000 yr. The cover of Cibotium declined slightly after 3000 yr, while other native herb and shrub species increased. A ‘climax’ stage in the conventional sense was apparently not reached on the observed age gradient, because the sere changed continuously in biomass and species; this divergent successional phenomenon may be unique to Hawaii where the flora is naturally impoverished and disharmonic due to its geographic isolation in contrast to more diverse and harmonic floras in continents.  相似文献

An unusual Rhodotorula isolated from decayed wood of Nothofagus obliqua (Mirb.) Blume is described and illustrated. Rumex sect.Axillares first described by the author in 1937 is known to be represented in N. America by 20 endemic species. From S. America only five species, all endemic, were previously known; this number is raised in the present revision to 15. Outside America there exist small groups of endemic species in S. Africa and in the islands of Hawaii as well as in Australia and scattered single species in C. Africa, on the remote Atlantic islands of Tristan de Cunha and Gough Island, and in eastern Asia.—In Europe the section is completely absent, except for three American species which occur as rare aliens. TheAxillares are not only morphologically well-characterized by their growth—no leaf rosettes, flowering period practically unlimited by formation of later flowering axillary shoots, flowers often monoecious—but also by their genetic structure expressed by a different behaviour in hybridization. Hybrids are frequent between species of sect.Rumex (syn.Simplices) and are easy to recognize by their sterility which results in a certain peculiarity in habit. In contrast, no spontaneous hybrids are known with certainty among species of sect.Axillares. Most artificial hybrids are fairly fertile. So far only three hybrids between species of the two sections have been known. Three more have been found by the author in Chile, all being highly sterile and showing the growth characteristics resulting from sterility as occur in hybrids between species of sect.Rumex.
Resumen Rumex secciónAxillares fue descrito por primera vez por el autor en 1937. Se conoce en América del Norte con 20 especies endémicas. De América del Sur se conocían sólo 5 especies, todas ellas endemicas; este número asciende a 15 en la presente revision. Fuera de las Américas se encuentran pequeños grupos de especies endémicas en Sudáfrica, en las Islas de Hawaii y en Australia; especies aisladas se encuentran en Africa Central, en las lejanas Islas Atlánticas de Tristan de Cunha y Gough Island y en Asia Oriental. La sección no tiene representantes en Europa, con excepción de tres especies americanas introducidas, poco frecuentes. La secciónAxillares se caracteriza bien, tanto morfológicamente por su forma de creciemiento—sin rosetas foliares, período floral prácticamente ilimitado por la formación de inflorescencias axilares parciales, flores a menudo monoicas—como por su estructura genética que se manifiesta en un comportamiento diferente de hibridación. Híbridos son frecuentes en las especies de la secciónRumex (syn.Simplices) y reconocibles por su esterilidad que se expresa en cierta particularidad del habito. Al contrario, no hay seguridad de híbridos espontáneos en la secciónAxillares. La mayor parte de los híbridos artificiales son totalmente fértiles. Hasta ahora se conocían solo tres híbridos entre las especies de ambas secciones. Otros tres han sido encontrados por el autor en Chile. Todos completamente estériles y con las características de hábito típicas resultantes la esterilidad, como ocurre en los híbridos de la secciónRumex.

In February 1978, in Puerto Montt (Chile) the palearctic species Drosophila subobscura was detected. The expansion of the species in this country has been very rapid, and now it is found over a distance of at least 2000 km North-South. The newly established populations are very flourishing and show a high degree of inversion chromosomal polymorphism. On the basis of the chromosomal arrangements present, an hypothesis can be formulated about the origin and characteristics of the founder group. Possibly, the founders came from Eastern or South Eastern Spain and formed a group of 10 or more individuals. The colonization of D. subobscura in Chile seems to follow the model of expansion of a cosmopolitan species, passively transported by man rather than the more active expansion of colonizers less tied to human activity, envisaged in Carson's models of colonization processes. The high level of chromosomal polymorphism observed in the populations of D. subobscura in Chile, coincides with this interpretation.This work has been supported by a grant from the Programa de Cooperación con Iberoamérica. Question: Does the proximity of shrubs affect seasonal water stress of young Austrocedrus chilensis trees (a native conifer of the Austral Temperate Forest of South America) in xeric sites? Location: A. chilensis xeric forest in northwest Patagonia, Argentina. Methods: We examined the dependence of predawn twig water potential on tree development (seedling to adult) and proximity to nurse shrubs during spring and summer. We analysed spatial associations of seedlings, saplings and adult trees with nurse shrubs, and also evaluated if trees affected shrub canopy vitality. Results: Water stress in Austrocedrus trees was affected by shrub presence. Small trees (i.e.<0.5 m in height) growing in the open were most stressed, particularly in summer. Small trees growing within a shrub canopy had low water stress and little change between spring and summer. The opposite trend, however, was true for the medium‐height category (i.e. 0.5‐1.5 m in height); trees in this size category were more stressed when growing within the shrub canopy than in the open. Larger Austrocedrus trees (i.e.>2 m in height) were not affected by shrub presence. Austrocedrus trees were spatially associated with shrubs in all height classes; however, the percentage of living shrub canopy decreased with tree height. Conclusions: In xeric areas of northwest Patagonia, the strength and direction of interactions between A. chilensis and shrubs, in terms of tree water stress, are dynamic and modulated by tree size and environmental conditions. Overall, positive effects of shrubs on early developmental stages appear to be more important than subsequent negative interactions, since nursing effects could generate a spatial association of shrubs and Austrocedrus trees that persists through later successional stages. These findings shed light on mechanisms behind successional changes, and have important conservation and management implications.  相似文献

A cellulolytic wild-type strain of Penicillium purpurogenum was isolated from a soil sample in southern Chile. It grew best at 28°C from an inoculum of 4×107 spores/100 ml medium. Highest endoglucanase activity was with Sigmacell as carbon source and corn steep liquor as nitrogen source. Wheat bran enhanced the production of endoglucanase and -glucosidase. The enzymes in the crude supernatants were stable up to 50°C and between pH 4.4 and 5.6 for 48 h.J.Steiner and C. Glacier forelands provide valuable sites for the study of patterns and processes of primary succession The Storbreen glacier foreland, south-central Norway, has previously been the subject of a suite of community-level approaches Here the focus is population-level studies of six key pioneer plants Arabis alpina, Deschampsia alpina, Oxyria digyna, Poa alpina, Saxifraga cespitosa and Trisetum spicatum and four heath shrubs Betula nana, Empetrum hermaphroditum, Phyllodoce caerulea and Salix complex (Salix glauca and S lanata) Size-frequency distributions are used as indicators of population phenomena The optimal conditions for growth and fecundity of Arabis alpina and Saxifraga cespitosa appear to be almost immediately upon deglaciation (< 7 yr), although both achieve their maximum cover on slightly older terrain A similar pattern was noted for the grasses, although their optima come at slightly later times Population phenomena in Oxyria digyna could not be related to terrain age, indicating a differing role of this species within the succession Among the shrubs a number of demographic and behavioural patterns are identifiable as successional features, and other patterns are explicable in relation to changing histories of disturbance and site moisture relationships Establishment and build-up in Empetrum hermaphroditum and Salix complex do not appear to be environmentally constrained, in contrast to Betula nana and Phvllodoce caerulea Betula nana is the slowest species to colonize, but occasional early colonists appear healthy and fecund, pointing to a strong environmental sieve at the point of establishment The population patterns varied considerably among the shrub species, the most striking common feature being in mode of establishment Establishment of ramets by vegetative means occurs increasingly on older ground within the foreland (maximum terrain age 230 yr) but only in sites of the mature heath outside the foreland is it the characteristic mode of establishment In exception to this pattern, vegetative establishment of Phyllodoce caerulea is very rare in all conditions studied Discussion focuses upon the importance of population phenomena, seed dispersal and life-history characteristics in successional change It is concluded that processes involved in species turnover include both allogenic and autogenic elements and that although the two classes are difficult to separate in practice, autogenic factors become more significant whilst species-environment relations become tighter in later phases of vegetation development  相似文献

Summary Rhizopus oligosporus UQM 145F was grown on cassava starch medium without a preliminary treatment of starch. The fermentation pattern ofR. oligosporus is shown to be influenced significantly by the medium composition, pH of the growth culture and the size of the spore inoculum. By varying the carbon, nitrogen and mineral salt concentrations, it was found that either glucose accumulated due to excess hydrolysis of starch or single cell protein production became dominant. In the case of the carbon source, increases in the concentration of starch led to higher biomass values, but lower rates of protein production. These observations led to a new formulated medium, resulting in an 82.9% cassava starch utilization and a true protein yield of 5.32 g/100 g initial substrate. The response ofR. oligosporus to inorganic compounds such as (NH4)2SO4, urea, NaCl and MgSO4 indicates an interesting fermentation control system.
Resumen Rhizopus oligosporus UQM 145F se hizo crecer en un medio a base de almidón de casava sin que hubiera pasado por un tratamiento previo con almidón. Se demostró que el patrón de fermentación seguido porRh.oligosporus estaba significativamente influenciado por: la composición del medio, su pH y el tamaño del inóculo. Al variar las concentraciones de carbono, nitrógeno y sales minerales se observó que predominaba la acumulación de glucosa o bien la producción de proteínas unicelulares. Un incremento en la fuente de carbono aumentó la biomasa pero disminuyó el ritmo de producción de proteínas. Estas observaciones permitieron elaborar un nuevo medio de cultivo que resultó en la utilización del 82.9% del almidón de casava con un rendimiento en proteínas de 5.32 g/100 g de sustrato inicial. La respuesta deRh. oligosporus a compuestos inorgánicos como sulfato amónico, urea, cloruro sódico y sulfato magnésico indican la existencia de un sistema de control de la fermentación muy interesante.

Résumé On a fait croîtreRhizopus oligosporus UQM 145 F sur un milieu à base d'amidon de manioc sans traitement préalable de l'amidon. Le profil de fermentation parR. oligosporus apparaît être influencé de manière significative par la composition du milieu, le pH de la culture en croissance et la taille de l'inoculum de spores. En variant les concentrations en carbone, en azote et en sels minéraux, on remarque la prédominance tantôt de la protéine unicellulaire, tantôt de l'accumulation de glucose. Un accroissement en concentration conduit à des valeurs plus élevées de la biomasse mais en une moindre production de protéines. Ces observations ont abouti à une nouvelle formulation du milieu avec pour résultat une utilisation à 82.9% de l'amidon de manioc et un rendement vrai en protéines de 5.32 g/100 g de substrat initial. La réponse deR. oligosporus aux composés inorganiques comme le sulfate d'ammonium, l'uréi, le chlorure de sodium et le sulfate de magnésium sont indicateurs d'un système très intéressant de contrôle de la fermentation.

Soil nutrients and density and biomass of annual plants underneath and outside the canopy of Porlieria chilensis shrubs were measured at the end of the growing season in a protected arid coastal site in Chile. Levels of soil nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter were significantly higher underneath than outside the canopies of shrubs. Almost 4 times as many plants occurred outside than underneath shrubs, but no significant differences in total aboveground biomass were found. Several species had higher densities and/or biomass outside rather than underneath shrubs, whereas others showed the oppsite trend. Species richness was lower underneath P. chilensis canopy. The spatial microdistribution of ephemeral species may be explained by differential water and nutrient requirements. Comparison of the patterns observed in our protected site versus surrounding unprotected areas supports the generalization that man, by removing shrubs and trees, has changed a previous heterogeneous spatial distribution of nutrients to a more homogenous one.This is a contribution of the Program of Arid Zone Studies of the Universidad de la Serena  相似文献

Chromosome banding and meiotic evidence show that XX/XY systems found in two Eupsophus species (Amphibia-Leptodactylidae) represent early stages of sex chromosome differentiation. Pair 14 is heteromorphic in E. migueli males and represents the heterochromosomes. In E. roseus this pair is metacentric and does not show heteromorphism. Paracentromeric constitutive heterochromatin is present in all chromosomes except in the E. migueli and E. roseus metacentric Y chromosomes. Constitutive heterochromatin loss is the structural modification responsible for Y chromosome differentiation. Abstract. Alkaline xeric soils from SE Spain weathered from kakiritized dolomitic rocks and subjected to recurrent fires, show phosphorus immobilization, low nutrient availability and high cation content, which might affect plant nutrition. Currently, Ulex shrubland, with a variety of dolomitophilous endemics, is colonizing eroded areas and replacing the original shrubland communities. Variation in nutrient content during post-fire regeneration was studied in six species which differ widely in their successional status. All species showed a high consumption of nutrients immediately after the fire. A pattern of decline in internal nutrient levels, especially P, with time since fire was detected in mid-to-late successional shrubs: Juniperus oxycedrus, Genista spartioides, and to a lesser extent in Rosmarinus officinalis, a shrub species of intermediate successional status. This pattern of decline may represent a progressive change towards a metabolism with a low turnover along the age gradient. Early successional shrub species behaved in a different way. Cistus clusii showed a nutrient-cumulative strategy, especially for P, across the fire-age gradient. Ulex rivasgodayanus maximized internal N concentrations due to its symbiotic activity with N2-fixing bacteria. Cistus and Rosmarinus held high cation levels in their tissues. The nutritional characteristics of these shrub species are seen as advantageous adaptations to the specific soil properties and disturbance regime of the area.  相似文献

Summary The subcommissural organ (SCO), Reissner's fiber (RF) and its massa caudalis of lamprey larvae (Geotria australis) were investigated immunocytochemically by use of an antiserum raised against bovine RF as primary antibody. The affinities of RF and massa caudalis for Ricinus communis agglutinin I (RCA) with and without previous acid hydrolysis, concanavalin A (Con A), wheat-germ agglutinin (WGA), aldehyde fuchsin, and PAS reaction were also studied.SCO and massa caudalis were strongly immunoreactive, whereas RF proper was distinctly negative. RF did not react with Con A and RCA. Only the periphery of RF was WGA-positive. RCA showed affinity for RF only after acid hydrolysis. RF was homogeneously stained by the aldehyde-fuchsin and PAS-methods. At variance with RF proper, the periphery of the massa caudalis reacted with RCA without previous acid hydrolysis, but its core was WGA-positive and reacted with RCA only after hydrolysis. It is suggested that (i) RF has a coat of glycoproteins containing sialic acid as terminal residue, whereas the massa caudalis possesses a coat with galactose as terminal residue; (ii) in RF proper and the massa caudalis the spatial arrangement of glycoproteins might be different.Routine transmission electron-microscopic observations indicate that in larvae of Geotria australis an open communication exists between the ampulla caudalis and blood capillaries via large cavities or lacunae.Supported by Grant I 38259 from the Stiftung Volkswagenwerk, Federal Republic of Germany, Grant S-85-39 from the Dirección de Investigaciones, Universidad Austral de Chile, and Grant 6027 from Fondo Nacional de Desarrollo Científico y Tecnológico, Chile  相似文献

Summary In situ measurements of nitrogenase activities in some rice soils, representing three different agroclimatic zones of Sri Lanka, demonstrated that there is a great potential for nitrogen fixation in these paddy soils, provided that they are continuously flooded and that nitrogenous fertilizer levels are relatively low. Under such conditions cyanobacterial (blue-green algal) fixation predominates. In certain areas of the wet zone, with highly organic soils, cyanobacterial fixation could probably meet a great part of the N-fertilizer input recommended. Heterotrophic rhizosphere fixation may also be significant, especially in the dry zone. Low concentrations of fertilizer-N were found to stimulate cyanobacterial numbers and total nitrogen fixation, at one site (dry zone), whereas high levels negatively affected total fixation at all sites investigated. In the absence of N-fertilizers, inoculation as well as additions of Mo, increased cyanobacterial numbers, nitrogen fixation activity and available ammonia levels substantially at the investigated site (dry zone). Rice grain yields did not vary significantly between treatments, because of too large a heterogeneity in the field with respect to water management.
Resumen Medidas in situ de las actividades nitrogenàsicas de algunos suelos arroceros representativos de tres zonas agroclimáticas distintas de Sri Lanka demostraron que existe un potencial considerable para la fijación de nitrógeno en estos suelos encharacados siempre y cuando permanezcan bajo el agua y la fertilización nitrógenada se mantenga relativamente baja. En estas condiciones la fijación predominante es la realizada por cianobacterias (algas verdeazules). En algunas areas de la zona húmeda con suelos muy orgánicos la fijación mediante cianobacterias podría suministrar una gran parte del aporte en nitrógeno recomendado. La fijación heterotrófa en la rizosfera puede también representar un aporte significativo, especialmente en la zona seca. Bajas concentraciones de fertilizante nitrogenado estimularon el número de cianobacterias y la fijación de nitrógeno total en uno de los suelos estudiados (zona seca) mientras que niveles elevados afectaron negativamente a la fijación en todos los suelos estudiados. En ausencia de fertilizantes nitrógenados la inoculación así como adiciones de Mo incrementaron sustancialmente el número de cianobacterias, la actividad fijadora de nitrógeno y los niveles de amonio disponibles en el suelo estudiado (zona seca). La cosecha de arroz no varió significativamente entre los distintos tratamientos debido a la excesiva heterogeneidad en el uso del agua.

Resumé Des mesuresin situ d'activité de nitrogénase dans quelques sols de rizière, représentant trois zones agro-climatiques différentes du Sri Lanka, ont démontré qu'il y a une grande potentialité pour la fixation d'azote dans ces sols, pourvu qu'ils soient continuellement inondés et que le niveau de fertilisation azotée soit relativement bas. Dans ces conditions, la fixation par les cyanobactéries (algues bleu-vertes) prédomine. Dans certaines régions de la zone humide, aux sols à forte teneur en matière organique, la fixation par les cyanobactéries puet probablement satisfaire une grande partie du besoin recommandé en fertilisant azoté. La fixation par la rhizosphère hétérotrophe peut, elle aussi, être significative, surtout dans la zone sèche. Des concentrations faibles en fertilisant azoté ont révélé stimuler le nombre de cyanobactéries et la fixation totale d'azote, sur un site (zone sèche), tandis que des teneurs élevées affectaient négativement la fixation totale sur tous les sites étudiés. En absence de fertilisant azoté, l'inoculation ainsi que l'ajout de Mo ont augmenté le nombre de cyanobactéries, l'activité fixatrice d'azote et le niveau d'ammoniaque disponible, de manière substantielle sur le site étudié (zone sèche). Le rendement en graines de riz n'a pas varié de manière significative d'un traitment à l'autre, à cause d'une hétérogénéité trop grande sur le champ en matière de gestion d'eau.

There is currently much interest in restoration ecology in identifying native vegetation that can decrease the invasibility by exotic species of environments undergoing restoration. However, uncertainty remains about restoration's ability to limit exotic species, particularly in deserts where facilitative interactions between plants are prevalent. Using candidate native species for restoration in the Mojave Desert of the southwestern U.S.A., we experimentally assembled a range of plant communities from early successional forbs to late‐successional shrubs and assessed which vegetation types reduced the establishment of the priority invasive annuals Bromus rubens (red brome) and Schismus spp. (Mediterranean grass) in control and N‐enriched soils. Compared to early successional grass and shrub and late‐successional shrub communities, an early forb community best resisted invasion, reducing exotic species biomass by 88% (N added) and 97% (no N added) relative to controls (no native plants). In native species monocultures, Sphaeralcea ambigua (desert globemallow), an early successional forb, was the least invasible, reducing exotic biomass by 91%. However, the least‐invaded vegetation types did not reduce soil N or P relative to other vegetation types nor was native plant cover linked to invasibility, suggesting that other traits influenced native‐exotic species interactions. This study provides experimental field evidence that native vegetation types exist that may reduce exotic grass establishment in the Mojave Desert, and that these candidates for restoration are not necessarily late‐successional communities. More generally, results indicate the importance of careful native species selection when exotic species invasions must be constrained for restoration to be successful.  相似文献

Laboratory incubations of15N-amended soils from a sagebrush steppe in south-central Wyoming indicate that nutrient turnover and availability have complex patterns across the landscape and between microsites. Total and available N and P and microbial C and N were highest in topographic depressions characterized by tall shrub communities. Net and gross N mineralization rates and respiration were also highest in these areas, but microbial efficiencies expressing growth relative to respiration cost were highest in soils of exposed ridgetop sites (prostrate shrub communities). Similar patterns occurred between shrub and intershrub soils, with greater nutrient availability under shrubs, but lower microbial efficiencies under shrubs than between. Surface soils had higher soil nutrient pools and N mineralization rates than subsurface soils, but N and C turnover and microbial efficiencies were lower in those surface soils. All soils decreased in respiration, mineralization, and immobilization rates during the 30-day incubation period, apparently approaching a steady-state substrate use. Soil microbial activity of the high organic matter accumulation areas was apparently more limited by labile substrate.  相似文献

Canopy gap and chilling requirements for seed germination were assessed in 61 and 44 species, respectively, in the temperate rain forest of southern Chile. Germination assays within canopy gap and understorey were carried out under natural conditions. Germination tests in cold stratified and non-stratified seeds were performed under laboratory conditions. Seeds were collected of common trees, shrubs, vines and perennial herbs of forests in southern Chile. Final percent germination was significantly enhanced under canopy gap conditions in 19 species, and significantly reduced in 11 species. Germination proved indifferent under gap vs. understorey conditions in half the species tested. Cold stratification affected germination in 11 species: significantly increasing final germination of four species, and significantly decreasing final percent germination of seven species. A Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was applied with the purpose of identifying groups of species with similar germination strategies. Four attributes were included in the PCA: final germination percentage in canopy gap, germination rate in the laboratory, and gap-and chilling-dependency indices (EGAP and STRAT, respectively). The first axis separated species mainly on EGAP variation while the second axis separated them mainly according to STRAT variation; the two axes together explaining 73% of the among-species variation. A small group of trees and vines germinating best in the understorey and neutral to chilling could clearly be distinguished from the remaining species analyzed. Multifactorial ANOVAs were used for evaluating the combined effect of successional status, seed mass, dispersal period, life form, phylogenetic categories, and dispersal syndrome on EGAP and STRAT variation. The EGAP value of secondary successional species proved significantly greater than that of primary successional species and species with endozoochorous seed dispersal were significantly less dependent on chilling (according to STRAT values) compared to species with mainly wind-dispersed seeds. Abstract. Many ecological studies have addressed issues of vegetation spatial patterns in attempts to understand the processes generating them. We investigated changes in ecological processes during succession via the analysis of shrubs’ spatial patterns in a system of linear sand dunes, an arid ecosystem located in the Negev Desert in Israel during three consecutive years. We hypothesized that spatial patterns change from clustered to regular as succession progresses due to changes in the relative importance of facilitation and competition in this environment. In this ecosystem communities of early successional stages are frequently disturbed by high rates of sand movement, whereas in later successional stages sand stability is high. We mapped in the field individual shrubs on high‐resolution aerial photographs, and converted the digital images to a GIS data set. Using Ripley's K‐function we analysed spatial patterns at three levels: the single‐species level, among species and at the individual level, in three communities characterizing different successional stages. In the early successional communities we found clustered spatial patterns, in comparison with stable habitats where spatial patterns tended to be regular. We argue that these shifts in spatial patterns are indicative of the assumption that in this sand‐dune system ecological interactions change from facilitation to competition as succession progresses. Further, we argue that these interactions operate in different spatial scales at the different successional stages, and that the study of these processes should be conducted at the spatial scales specific to each community.  相似文献
