Field trials investigating the effect of visual cues on catches of Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae) at toxic targets impregnated with the female sex pheromone (Z)-9-tricosene, were conducted in a caged-layer deep-pit poultry unit in southern England. Targets treated with azamethiphos and baited with 2.5 g of 40% (Z)-9-tricosene impregnated beads caught significantly greater numbers of M. domestica than control targets. The greater attractiveness of the pheromone impregnated targets persisted for at least 5 weeks. The addition of longitudinal black stripes, or a regularly spaced pattern of black spots, to the white targets had no effect on catch rates. However, a pattern of clustered black spots, designed to imitate groups of feeding M. domestica, significantly increased target catches; this effect was particularly pronounced in the targets impregnated with (Z)-9-tricosene. Trials comparing the attractiveness of white and fluorescent yellow pheromone-treated targets under two different lighting regimes indicated that M. domestica does not have a significant preference for either colour. The implications of these results in relation to the control of M. domestica populations in poultry units are discussed.  相似文献

House fly (Musca domestica) males are highly attracted to dead female flies infected with the entomopathogenic fungus Entomophthora muscae. Because males orient to the larger abdomen of infected flies, both visual and chemical cues may be responsible for the heightened attraction to infected flies. Our behavioral assays demonstrated that the attraction is sex-specific-males were attracted more to infected females than to infected males, regardless of cadaver size. We examined the effect of E. muscae on the main component of the house fly sex pheromone, (Z)-9-tricosene, and other cuticular hydrocarbons including n-tricosane, n-pentacosane, (Z)-9-heptacosene, and total hydrocarbons of young (7 days old) and old (18 days old) virgin females. Young E. muscae-infected female flies accumulated significantly less sex pheromone and other hydrocarbons on their cuticular surface than uninfected females, whereas the cuticular hydrocarbons of older flies were unaffected by fungus infection. These results suggest that chemical cues other than (Z)-9-tricosene, visual cues other than abdomen size, or a combination of both sets of cues might be responsible for attraction of house fly males to E. muscae-infected females.  相似文献

The number of adult male and female house flies, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae), near varying levels of (Z)-9-tricosene alone (5, 50, or 100 micdrol) or combined (50 microl) with sugar was determined using conical screened traps on a dairy in southern California. Overall, significantly more males than females were collected in the traps. Significantly more flies (male and female) were collected in traps with (Z)-9-tricosene. There were no significant differences among doses of (Z)-9-tricosene alone, but numbers of both sexes were significantly higher in traps baited with (Z)-9-tricosene and sugar compared with the 5- and 50-microl doses without sugar. The age of female flies collected in traps was determined by pterin analysis. Mean female ages ranged from 94.7 to 99.6 degree-days (6.3-6.8 d of age) and did not differ significantly among treatments. Dissections of a subset of females from each treatment determined that collected females were primarily nongravid (86.3%). Proportions of gravid females that were collected did not differ among treatments.  相似文献

Using gas chromatography the relative amounts of (Z)-9-tricosene (muscalure) and some other hydrocarbons on the cuticle of 1- to 20-day-old houseflies (Musca domestica L.) from different strains were determined. Flies from a WHO strain, in culture since 1961, and first-generation laboratory-cultured flies from two wild-type strains from a poultry breeding and a cow-house with pigsty, respectively, were compared. On WHO females hydrocarbons with 23–25 C atoms constituted about 65% of the total hydrocarbons, whereas on wild-type females less than 2% of these compounds was present. (Z)-9-tricosene comprised up to 20–30% of the total hydrocarbons on 5- to 20-day-old WHO females, whereas less than 0.5% (Z)-9-tricosene was present on the wild-type females. We also compared the amounts of (Z)-9-tricosene and some other hydrocarbons on female houseflies, kept in culture in the laboratory for several generations. It appeared that whereas on first-generation wild-type females hardly or no (Z)-9-tricosene could be detected, the amounts of this substance had increased considerably after some tens of generations in the laboratory. It is suggested that this was due to selection in subsequent generations of high-density populations. Production of (Z)-9-tricosene and of tricosane was shown to be closely linked. Selection did not affect the production of other cuticular hydrocarbons by the females. It is suggested that in mixed populations (both sexes together in a cage) in the course of time (Z)-9-tricosene is transferred from females to males and (Z)-9-heptacosene from males to females. It is concluded that reproductive ability of houseflies does not primarily depend on the amounts of (Z)-9-tricosene on females, although higher amounts of this substance may increase contacts between males and females.  相似文献

The epicuticular and internal waxes of male and female houseflies were examined by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry at closely timed intervals from emergence until day-6 of adulthood. New components identified included tricosan-10-one, 9,10-epoxyheptacosane, heptacosen-12-one, a series of odd-carbon numbered dienes from C31 to C39, several positional isomers of monoenes including (Z)-9- and 7-pentacosene and a number of methyl- and dimethylalkanes. (Z)-9-tricosene appears in internal lipids prior to appearing on the surface of the insect, suggesting that it is transported in the hemolymph to its site of deposition on the epicuticle. The large increases in the amount of (Z)-9-tricosene in females from day-2 until day-6 is compensated for by a concomitant decrease in (Z)-9-heptacosene. The C23 epoxide and ketone only appear in females after the production of (Z)-9-tricosene is induced, and are only abundant in epicuticular waxes, suggesting they are formed after (Z)-9-tricosene is transported to the cells which are involved in taking them to the surface of the insect. Mathematical analysis indicated that the time shift between internal production and external accumulation in females is more than 24 h. The divergence between male and female lipid production occurs at an early stage, when insects are less than one day old.  相似文献

Sticky card captures of house flies, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae), were used to compare efficacy of screen-covered baits containing sugar, sugar and 0.1% (Z)-9-tricosene, sugar and 1.0% (Z)-9-tricosene, Golden Malrin [1.1% methomyl and 0.049% (Z)-9-tricosene], and Quick-Bayt [0.5% imidacloprid and 0.1% (Z)-9-tricosene]. The QuickBayt treatment caught more flies per hour (mean = 116.5) than sugar alone (mean = 81.0), but the addition of (Z)-9-tricosene to sugar did not increase fly capture compared with sugar alone. More males (65% of total) than females were collected on the sticky cards for all treatments. Fly kill by plain sugar (control) and the commercial baits Golden Malrin, QuikStrike Fly Abatement strips (1.0% nithiazine), and QuickBayt was tested over a 90-min period. An average of 1.4, 5.6, 363.0, and 1,266.0 flies were killed using sugar, Golden Malrin, QuikStrike, and QuickBayt, respectively. The similarity between Golden Malrin and plain sugar reflects severe resistance to this once effective methomyl bait. A no-choice feeding assay using lab-reared methomyl-susceptible and methomyl-resistant house flies was conducted with and without (Z)-9-tricosene. Adult mortality was significantly higher in the methomyl-susceptible strain exposed to treatments containing methomyl. Lower consumption of the methomyl treatments by resistant flies suggested resistance was behavioral and mortality was not influenced by (Z)-9-tricosene for either fly strain.  相似文献

The regulation of production of the sex pheromone (Z)-9-tricosene (Z9-23:Hy) in the housefly, Musca domestica, was studied by examining the chain length specificity of the fatty acyl-CoA elongation reactions and the reductive conversion of fatty acyl-CoAs to alkenes in 1- and 4-day-old male and female houseflies. Microsomal preparations from 4-day-old female insects produced as the predominant alkene Z9-23:Hy when incubated with malonyl-CoA, NADPH, and [9,10-3H2]oleoyl-CoA (18:1-CoA), whereas microsomal preparations from 4-day-old male insects produced predominantly (Z)-9-heptacosene (Z9-27:Hy). These are the major alkenes produced in vivo by Day 4 females and males, respectively. Microsomes prepared from both Day 1 males and Day 1 females produced Z9-27:Hy as the major alkene from labeled 18:1-CoA. This is the major alkene produced in vivo by both sexes at Day 1. An examination of the chain length specificity of the elongation reactions showed that microsomes prepared from Day 4 male insects readily elongated both 18:1-CoA and 15-[15,16-3H2]tetracosenoyl-CoA (24:1-CoA) to 28-carbon moieties, whereas microsomes from Day 4 female insects did not efficiently elongate either substrate beyond 24 carbons. With high substrate concentrations, microsomes prepared from male insects converted 24:1-CoA to Z9-23:Hy more efficiently than did those from females, whereas under lower and presumably more physiological substrate concentrations, microsomes from females had slightly higher activity than did those from males. Taken together, these data show that the regulation of the chain length of the alkenes, and thus sex pheromone production, in the housefly resides predominantly in the elongation reactions and not in the step which converts the fatty acyl-CoA to hydrocarbon.  相似文献

Waggle-dancing honeybee foragers emit four hydrocarbons that have been shown to stimulate colony foraging by reactivating experienced foragers and increasing the number of recruitment dances. These hydrocarbons, the alkanes tricosane and pentacosane, and the alkenes (Z)-9-tricosene and (Z)-9-pentacosene, are part of the array of social insects cuticular lipids which have been well studied in the context of nestmate recognition. This study seeks to determine which of the dance hydrocarbons produce the behavioral responses of forager bees by using a binary choice behavioral assay for attraction or repulsion to the volatile phase of the dance compounds. We found no significant deviation from random choice for single dance compounds and pairs of compounds, but bees were significantly attracted to a mixture of the three compounds (Z)-9-tricosene, tricosane, and pentacosane. These results suggest synergy among the waggle-dance hydrocarbons, which was unexpected based on previous research where, in the context of nestmate recognition, alkenes have been shown to play a key role in eliciting behavioral responses. Synergy among the waggle-dance hydrocarbons may provide specificity that facilitates adaptive, context-specific behavioral responses to this subset of cuticular hydrocarbons.  相似文献

The efficacy of synthetic female sex pheromone lures for Crocidolomia pavonana (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) in the cabbage fields of Java and Bali, Indonesia, was investigated by varying the composition and dosage of the components. The lure containing a synthetic pheromone blend of (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate (Z11–16: Ac) and (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9–14: Ac) at a 10:1 ratio acquired significantly more male catches than single component lures and the control lure. Meanwhile, no attraction was observed when lures with 1:1 and 1:10 blends were tested. The composition of Z11–16: Ac and Z9–14: Ac at a ratio of 5, 10 and 20:1 attracted more males than the control lures. Dosage studies showed that 0.055 and 0.55 mg of a mixture of Z11–16: Ac and Z9–14: Ac (10:1 ratio) attracted more males than the control. These results are the first demonstration of the efficacy of synthetic pheromone for C. pavonana in field conditions. The present study suggests the feasibility of pheromone-based monitoring as a simple and low-cost technique for integrated pest management of this pest.  相似文献

Chemical signals originating from the ovaries of gravid females of Musca domestica (Diptera: Cyclorrhapha: Muscidae) attract ovipositing females to common egg-laying sites. Behavioral experiments indicated that females preferred to oviposit in fermented wheat bran containing ovaries from reproductively mature houseflies. Females preferred to oviposit in fermented wheat bran than wet wheat bran. This effect was additive with the attraction to housefly ovaries. Solvent extracts from housefly ovaries were attractive to gravid females. Extracts obtained with hexane were most attractive to gravid females for egg laying, and extracts obtained with ethyl acetate attracted more egg laying than extracts obtained by dichloromethane. Gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed that tricosane and (Z)-9-tricosene were the main components of the hexane extracts. Both tricosane and (Z)-9-tricosene were shown to elicit dose-dependent aggregation of gravid females in oviposition bioassays, but high doses of either chemical were not attractive.  相似文献

The plum cankerworm moth, Cystidia couaggaria couaggaria (Geometridae: Ennominae), is a defoliator of Chinese plum trees (Prunus mume). The pheromone components of the female were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) with an electro-antennographic (EAG) detector and GC coupled with mass spectrometry. The crude pheromone extract included several EAG-active components, i.e., trienyl, dienyl, and saturated hydrocarbons, with a C21-C25 straight chain. The characteristic mass spectra indicated the unsaturated hydrocarbons to be (3Z,6Z,9Z)-3,6,9-trienes and (6Z,9Z)-6,9-dienes. In the fields, mixtures of the synthetic C<21 and C<23 trienes in a ratio of 2:3 and 1:4 successfully attracted males of this diurnal species during daytime. While the male antennae responded to the C25 triene and saturated hydrocarbons, their synergistic effects were not observed on the male attraction in the fields. Addition of the C21 diene interestingly inhibited the activity of the triene mixture. Males of Cystidia truncangulata, a sympatric diurnal congener of C. c. couaggaria, showed similar EAG responses to the unsaturated hydrocarbons, but no C. truncangulata males were attracted by the lures tested for C. c. couaggaria males, indicating that the identified hydrocarbons comprised the species-specific pheromone of C. c. couaggaria females.  相似文献

Pheromone production in the housefly was monitored during oögenesis and in ovariectomized insects by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) and radio-GLC. The presence of vitellogenic ovaries was required for the initiation of (Z)-9-tricosene (muscalure), (Z)-9,10-epoxytricosane and (Z)-14-tricosen-10-one synthesis. Methylalkane synthesis was enhanced by developing ovaries. Insects ovariectomized within 12 hr after emergence produced no detectable amounts of (Z)-9-tricosene, C23 epoxide nor C23 ketone and synthesized less methylalkanes than the controls. This effect was reversed by ovary implants. When flies were ovariectomized after oviposition, synthesis of (Z)-9-tricosene, C23 epoxide and C23 ketone continued. Thus, initiation of the synthesis of these C23 pheromone compounds required a vitellogenic ovary, but the ovary was not required to maintain synthesis.  相似文献

The attraction of the stink bug Euschistus conspersus Uhler to sources of the synthetic pheromone component methyl (2E,4Z)-decadienoate was investigated in a series of field experiments in native vegetation surrounding commercial apple orchards in Washington. In experiments with pheromone lures placed inside two different tube-type traps, stink bugs were attracted to the immediate area around traps in large numbers, but very few were caught in the traps. Pheromone lures attached directly to the host plant mullein, Verbascum thapsus L., demonstrated that these 'baited" plants attracted significantly more E. conspersus than unbaited plants. Spring (reproductive) and summer (reproductively diapausing) E. conspersus adults, both males and females, were attracted to pheromone-baited plants. There was no significant difference in the number of male or female E. conspersus attracted to pheromone-baited traps or plants in any of the experiments, further characterizing methyl (2E,4Z)-decadienoate as an aggregation, and not a sex pheromone. Stink bug aggregations formed within 24-48 h of lure placement on mullein plants and remained constant until the lure was removed after which aggregations declined over 3-4 d to the level of unbaited plants. The implications of these studies for E. conspersus monitoring and management are discussed.  相似文献

In a previous study we have reported that both (E,Z)-8,10-dodecadienol (E,Z) and (Z,Z)-8,10-dodecadienol (Z,Z) isomers inhibit the attraction of male codling moth, Cydia pomonella L. when added to (E,E)-8,10-dodecadienol (E,E) while the (Z,E)-8,10-dodecadienol (Z,E) isomer induces slight increase in the number of males attracted to the pheromone source. In the present study, we have tested the behavioral activity of the individual geometrical isomers E,Z; Z,E and Z,Z. A few number of codling moth males flew to the Z,E-isomer while the other two isomers (i.e. E,Z and Z,Z) did not elicit any upwind orientation. Analysis of the flight behavior to the E,E- and Z,E-isomer showed significant differences in most of the flight parameters evaluated. Based on the biological observations and molecular modeling, we suggest that the behavioral activity of the Z,E-isomer is due to presence of specific receptors for this isomer on male antennae and not to its structural resemblance to the E,E-isomer. These results underline the importance of the Z,E-isomer in sex attraction of male codling moth.  相似文献

Direct evidence is presented for the role of a cytochrome P-450 monooxygenase (called mixed-function oxidase, or polysubstrate mono-oxygenase, PSMO) in the metabolism of the sex pheromone (Z)-9-tricosene to its corresponding epoxide and ketone in the housefly. A secondary alcohol, most likely an intermediate in the conversion of the alkene to the ketone, was also tentatively identified. The results of in vivo and in vitro experiments showed that the PSMO inhibitors, piperonyl butoxide (PB) and carbon monoxide, markedly inhibited the formation of epoxide and ketone from (9,10-3H) (Z)-9-tricosene. An examination of the relative rates of (Z)-9-tricosene metabolism showed that males exhibited a higher rate of metabolism than females with the antennae of males showing the highest activity of any tissue/organ examined. The major product from all tissues/organs was the epoxide. Data from experiments with subcellular fractions showed that the microsomal fraction had the majority of enzyme activity, which was strongly inhibited by PB and CO and required NADPH and O2 for activity. A carbon monoxide difference spectrum with reduced cytochrome showed maximal absorbance at 450 nm and allowed quantification of the cytochrome P-450 in the microsomal fraction of 0.410-nmol cytochrome P-450 mg?1 protein. Interaction of (Z)-9-tricosene with the cytochrome P-450 resulted in a type I spectrum, indicating that the pheromone binds to a hydrophobic site adjacent to the heme moiety of the oxidized cytochrome P-450.  相似文献

The moth Tecia (Scrobipalpopsis) solanivora Povolny (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is the most important pest of potato, Solanum spp., in Central America and adjacent South American countries. Insecticide treatments are not sufficiently effective; therefore, we investigated the feasibility of pheromone-mediated mating disruption for control of T. solanivora. Pheromone dispensers were formulated with 70 mg of the three sex pheromone compounds (E)-3-dodecenyl acetate, (Z)-3-dodecenyl acetate, and dodecyl acetate, in a ratio of 100:56:100, respectively. Male attraction to these compounds is optimal at a ratio of 100:1:20, thus the mating disruption dispensers contained an off-blend, which attracted only a few males. Nonetheless, one mating disruption dispenser suppressed male attraction to calling females in a flight tunnel and reduced male activation in response to female pheromone. Communication disruption is accordingly due to camouflage of the female signal and possibly due to a reduction of male responsiveness by sensory imbalance. Only a few males were observed in a 3-ha potato field treated with 84 g pheromone/ha, compared with an untreated control field. During 2 mo, male attraction to traps baited with calling females or synthetic pheromone was strongly reduced. This reduction confirms the potential of mating disruption for management of T. solanivora. The efficacy of the pheromone treatment can be further improved by earlier dispenser application, by increased dispenser load, and by treatment of larger fields to reduce immigration of mated females.  相似文献

Pheromone gland extracts from calling female Plodia interpunctella contained at least seven compounds that consistently elicited electroantennographic responses from male antennae upon gas chromatographic analysis. Three of these compounds were found to be the previously identified gland constituents, i.e., (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadienyl acetate (Z9,E12-14:OAc), (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadienal (Z9,E12-14:Ald) and (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadienol (Z9,E12-14:OH). A fourth EAD-active compound was identified as (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:OAc). The homologue (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate (Z11-16:OAc) was also identified in the extracts, but showed no EAD activity. The identity of all five compounds was confirmed by comparison of GC retention times and mass spectra with those of synthetic standards. In flight tunnel tests there were no significant differences in response of male P. interpunctella to the bait containing all four EAD-active compounds and the responses to female gland extacts. A behavioural assay of different two-compound blends in the flight tunnel showed that only addition of the corresponding aldehyde to the major pheromone component Z9,E12-14:OAc raised the male response. A subtractive assay, however, revealed that the exclusion of any of the compounds from the complete four-compound blend reduced its activity significantly. We thus conclude that the female-produced sex pheromone of P. interpunctella consists of at least four components, i.e., Z9,E12-14:OAc, Z9,E12-14:Ald, Z9,E12-14:OH and Z9-14:OAc.In a field trapping test performed in a storage facility, the four-component blend attracted significantly more males of P. interpunctella than traps baited with Z9,E12-14:OAc alone. In contrast, the highest number of Ephestia kuehniella males was found in the traps baited with this major component, suggesting that the secondary pheromone components contribute to the species specificity of the blend.  相似文献

Abstract:  The behavioural response of Brazilian apple leafroller males, Bonagota cranaodes (Meyrick), to natural and synthetic sex pheromone was studied in a wind tunnel. Calling females elicited upwind flights followed by landing and wingfanning at the source in 72% of the males tested. Female gland extracts, with the main compound ( E , Z )3,5dodecadienyl acetate released at 100 pg/min, attracted 57% of the males to the source. Few males (1%) were attracted to the main compound alone, released at the same rate. Even a synthetic blend of all five gland compounds eliciting an antennal response, formulated according to their proportion in female gland extracts, was barely attractive (7%). Comparison of this synthetic blend and female gland extracts indicates a behavioural role of other gland compounds. Male attraction was significantly increased (34%) in response to a 100 : 5 : 5 : 5-blend of the main compound and three minor gland compounds, ( Z )-5-dodecenyl acetate, ( E , Z )-3,5-tetradecadienyl acetate, and ( Z )-9-hexadecenyl acetate.  相似文献

The response of the two most abundant cockchafer species in central Europe, Melolontha hippocastani and M. melolontha, towards phenol, mixtures of phenol with the leaf alcohol (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol and the known cockchafer pheromones, 1,4-benzoquinone (M. hippocastani) and toluquinone (M. melolontha), was investigated in the field. During the swarming period at dusk, phenol attracted males of both species, and enhanced the known attraction of cockchafer males towards (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol. A mixture of phenol plus (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol was less attractive for M. hippocastani males than a mixture of (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol plus 1,4-benzoquinone, whereas phenol plus (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol attracted as many M. melolontha males as a mixture of (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol plus toluquinone. In both species three component mixtures containing phenol, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, and the respective benzoquinone did not capture more males than two component mixtures consisting of only (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol and the benzoquinone. A possible role of phenol as another cockchafer sex pheromone component is discussed.  相似文献
