In fry, 1- and 2-year old juvenile Atlantic salmon, relatively small superficial red muscle fibres staining well for glycogen and succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) but with little myofibrillar ATPase, were evident on either side of the lateral line, in June. Well differentiated relatively large white fibres contained lower concentrations of glycogen than the red fibres, higher ATPase and no SDH, except traces in the larger 1- and 2-year-olds. Intermediate size pink fibres, which were also intermediate between red and white fibres in their staining properties, occurred in a thin diffuse layer along the red-white boundary, thickest at the apex near the vertebral column, and most evident in the younger fish.  相似文献

Salmon eggs were incubated at 5, 8 or 11° C from fertilization to hatching. At Gorodilov stages 25, 27, 29, 31 and 33 transverse sections of whole embryos (at somite level 10–15) were prepared for histochemistry and electron microscopy. At every stage up to hatching, cross–sectional areas of the embryos were not different between temperatures, and from stage 27 onwards there was also no difference in the ratio of white to red muscle. However, there were more muscle fibres but of smaller average diameter in both the red and white muscle for the colder temperature embryos. At hatching there were also more nuclei (per cross–section) in the colder embryos but more nuclei per muscle fibre in the warmer embryos. In all cases the 8° C embryos were intermediate between 5 and 11° C embryos in their muscle parameters. Fast and slow muscle fibres could only be distinguished in the embryos by alkali–stable ATPase reactions. Succinic dehydrogenase activity was low in embryonic fish. No differences between the temperature groups were detected in the histochemical reactions for either ATPase or succinic dehydrogenase activities.  相似文献

This paper describes an experimental study of the effects of food supply, growth rates and social interactions on homing by juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in response to displacement. Groups of five fish were housed in a section of an artificial stream and given either rations allowing maximum growth (the rich condition) or 0·1 of this amount (the poor condition); daily specific growth rates were significantly higher in the rich condition. After a 6-day settlement period, the fish were captured, displaced downstream and their movements recorded over the next 3 h. Prior to displacement, the fish showed a high degree of site fidelity and high levels of aggression. Dominant fish and those with stronger site attachment grew faster prior to displacement, these effects being independent. Following displacement, 24% of all fish returned to their previously favoured site and stayed there, 23% returned home initially, but subsequently moved on, 5% settled in a new site and 49% failed to move. The distribution of responses was identical for the rich and poor conditions, but fish that homed were dominant and had grown faster during the pre-displacement period.  相似文献

Atlantic halibut eggs and yolk-sac larvae were incubated at 1, 5 and 8° C. Eggs incubated at 8° C gave slightly shorter larvae at hatching with a significantly smaller total cross-sectional area of white muscle fibres than eggs incubated at 5° C. Transport of eggs 2 days prior to hatching gave significantly longer larvae at hatching with a significantly larger red fibre cross-sectional area than when eggs were transported shortly after the blastopore closure. A higher survival until 230 degree days after hatching was also observed in the former group. All eggs incubated at 1° C died before hatching and all larvae incubated at 1° C died before 45 degree days after hatching. From hatching until 230 degree days the total white cross-sectional area increased threefold in all temperature groups. The increase in white cross-sectional area was entirely due to hypertrophy between hatching and 150 degree days (10 mm L S). Recruitment of new white fibres increased in germinal zones at the dorsal, ventral and lateral borders of the myotome from 150 degree days onwards, but at 230 degree days (12–13 mm L S) the recruitment fibre zone constituted <10% of the total white cross-sectional area. Larval incubation at 8° C gave slightly longer larvae with a significantly larger cross-sectional area of recruitment fibres at 230 degree days than incubation at 5° C. The larval group incubated at 8° C also had a significantly lower survival until 230 degree days than did the 5° C group. Incubation temperature regimes did not affect the volume density of myofibrils in the axial muscle fibres at 230 degree days. Thus hypertrophy is the predominant mechanism of axial white muscle growth in Atlantic halibut yolk-sac larvae and an increased rearing temperature during the yolk-sac stage increases white muscle fibre hyperplasia.  相似文献

Both red and white muscle fibre numbers in juvenile Atlantic salmon increased gradually with fish length throughout the freshwater growth period. Mean fibre area increased as fish grew to 6.5 cm f.l. , but thereafter was unrelated to fish length. Hyperplasia was most obvious when fish were growing fastest, and was the dominant growth process in fish over 6.5 cm f.l. Hypertrophy was most important when growth was slow, as in autumn and winter.
Mean white fibre area was significantly smaller in deep muscle than at medial and superficial sites. Total cross-sectional area of red, white and total trunk muscle increased with fish length. The ratio of red: white cross-sectional area increased with fish length to a plateau at about 10% after 6.5 cm f.l.  相似文献

Juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar subjected to three weeks of cooler temperatures were 8·5% smaller than controls at the end of the temperature manipulation, but had caught up in size 20 weeks later. The behavioural means is examined by which this catch-up or compensatory growth is achieved. While on average compensating fish did not spend more time feeding, dominant fish within each group gained more exclusive access to the feeding area during periods of catch-up growth. Therefore the extent to which compensatory growth could be achieved was dependent on both the social status of the individual and the dominants' ability to monopolize the food patch.  相似文献

1. Anthropogenic disturbances of the physical habitat and corresponding effects on fish performance are key issues in stream conservation and restoration. Reduced habitat complexity because of increased sediment loadings and canalization is of particular importance, but it is not clear to what extent fish populations are influenced directly by changes in the physical environment, or indirectly through changes in the biotic environment affecting the food availability. 2. Here, we test for the direct effect of habitat complexity on the performance (growth) of juvenile Atlantic salmon by manipulating shelter availability (interstitial spaces in the substrate) across 20 semi‐natural stream channels without altering the substrate composition, and stocking each channel with a common density of fish. A simple method for measuring salmonid shelters using flexible PVC tubes was developed and tested. Daytime sheltering behaviour and growth rates were compared across the channels differing in shelter availability. 3. Measured shelter availability was strongly negatively correlated with observed number of fish not finding shelters and mass loss rates of the fish (growth performance) increased with decreasing number of measured shelters. Number and mean depth of interstitial spaces explained up to 68% and 24% of the among‐channel variation in sheltering behaviour and growth performance, respectively. Furthermore, negative effects of shelter reduction increased with fish body size. Thus, changes in habitat structure may even influence the size selection gradients. 4. Shelter availability is an easily measured variable, possibly affecting the population demographics and long‐term evolutionary processes, and is therefore a key habitat factor to be considered in stream restoration and habitat classification.  相似文献

The proportion of mature male parr in 11 families of Atlantic salmon, Sulrno sulur, reared under similar conditions in fresh water varied from 0–43%. The mature males were smaller than their siblings in December as 1 + and in late March. After individual tagging and transfer to a sea cage in early April. the previously mature males grew faster than previously immature salmon during the next 6 months. This compensatory growth resulted in almost equal size between the two groups. The results are discussed in relation to the different life strategies of salmon.  相似文献

Sea‐age at maturity of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar decreased with increasing values of the seasonal NAOI from February to April. Body mass increment from smolts to adults of one‐sea‐winter Atlantic salmon increased with increasing NAOI in May at the time when the juveniles moved to sea.  相似文献

The seasonal growth trajectories of wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar juveniles by age group within the Margaree River, Canada, are described. Circuli counts from scales were used to infer growth rates at different ages and these were used to predict the proportions of age 2‐ and 3‐year old smolts from different portions of the watershed. In the wild Atlantic salmon juveniles from the Margaree River, there was no bimodality in fork length frequencies and no 1 year old smolts were produced. Water temperature differences during the growing season were insufficient to explain the differences in growth rates and size at age among the sites sampled. There was a positive association between the growth rate in the first year and the subsequent age at smoltification. In the Margaree River, differences in tributary specific growth rates and size at age were expected to produce important differences in the relative ages at smoltification.  相似文献

In aquaculture, competitive interactions for food are a major source of growth rate variation, since they result in aggressive individuals acquiring a disproportionate amount of food and growing faster. Consequently, such competition increases the variance and skew of the size distribution of fish. In Atlantic salmon Salmo salar acquaculture, rearing is often initiated with juveniles of uniform size. However, the initial factors allowing fish to out-compete others of the same size is unclear. This study shows that individual differences in standard metabolic rate (SMR) may contribute to differences in aggression between juvenile Atlantic salmon. Fish were segregated into three holding tanks on the basis of differences in relative SMR aggression was highest in the tank containing high SMR fish, and lowest in a low SMR group. However, there were no significant differences in mean growth between the three treatments, although the skew of the size distribution was much less in the low SMR group than in the high SMR group. Therefore, although mean growth was not improved in the low SMR group by excluding high SMR fish, their growth subsequently showed less variability, possibly as a consequence of fewer despotic individuals gaining disproportionate access to food.  相似文献

The effect of water temperature on the duration of sperm motility, the time lapse after activation by fresh water and the fertility of eggs was studied in Atlantic salmon and brown trout. Eggs of both species were fully fertile in fresh water after 512 s. No interspecific differences were noted in egg fertility at the lower water temperatures, but the brown trout eggs showed a higher resistance to high temperatures, indicating a better physiological thermotolerance. A highly significant effect of temperature on the overall duration of sperm motility was found, with a marked peak at 3−4°C for salmon and a weaker one for trout. After freshwater activation the eggs of both species remained fertile for a longer time than the sperm were mobile.  相似文献

A large size variation amongst life histories for stream-dwelling Atlantic salmon Salmo salar was found and the relative effect of life histories on size varied over time. As early as December (age 0+ years), fish that later smolted at age 2+ years were significantly larger than fish that did not smolt at age 2+ years. In contrast, there were no mass differences at age 0+ years between fish that would mature or not at age 1+ years (October). The mass differences between smolts and non-smolts persisted until smolting, and differences between mature and immature fish first appeared in May (age 1+ years). Following September (age 1+ years), there was also a significant interaction between smolting and maturity. Previously mature and immature age 2+ year smolts were not significantly different in size, but immature age 2+ year non-smolts were much lighter than mature age 2+ year non-smolts. Based on mass differences, the apparent 'decision' to smolt occurred c . 5 months before (winter, age 0+ years) the decision to mature (late spring, age 1+ years). In addition to strong seasonal growth variation, sizes of freshwater Atlantic salmon were largely structured by the complex interaction between smolt-age and maturity.  相似文献

From November to May, the lipid mass in the viscera and carcass of juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar that were undergoing smolt transformation prior to seaward migration ('early migrants') were significantly greater than those of their siblings that would delay migration for at least a further year. During winter (November-February), the depletion of lipid associated with the viscera was significantly greater in early migrants, whilst lipid depletion in the remaining carcass was greater in delayed migrants. Early migrants continued to deplete both lipid compartments in spring (February-May), whereas delayed migrants depleted visceral lipid but replenished carcass lipid over the same period. Fatty acid accumulation rates (a measure of storage lipid synthesis rates) were two to six times greater in visceral than in carcass lipid throughout the study, suggesting that lipid turnover is much more rapid in the viscera. There were no differences in fatty acid accumulation rates between migrant groups in November, despite the much lower food consumption rate of delayed migrants at that time, suggesting that these fish allocated a larger proportion of their nutritional resources to lipid synthesis. In the carcass lipid of early migrants, and in both the visceral and carcass lipid of delayed migrants, the fatty acid accumulation rate was negatively correlated with lipid mass. Fatty acid accumulation rates increased from November to February in both visceral and carcass lipid in the two migrant groups. The fatty acid accumulation rate in carcass lipid was significantly higher in delayed migrants than in early migrants in February, but not in May. These results support the hypothesis that life history strategies involving rapid growth will result in a relatively low allocation of resources to lipid reserves.  相似文献

1. Patterns of sheltering and activity are of fundamental importance in the ecology of animals and in determining interactions among predators and prey. Balancing decreased mortality risk when sheltering with increased feeding rate when exposed is believed to be a key determinant of diel patterns of sheltering in many animals. 2. Despite lower foraging efficiency at night than during the day, Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr are nocturnal during winter and at low summer temperatures. Nocturnal activity also occurs at warm water temperatures during summer, but little is known about the functional significance of this behaviour. 3. This study aimed to determine: (1) the preferred activity and shelter pattern of Atlantic salmon parr during warm summer months, and (2) their response to variations in food availability when balancing growth rate (G) and mortality risk (M), as expressed through time out of shelter. We differentiated among four potential responses to reduced food availability: (1) no response; (2) G decreases but M remains constant; (3) G remains constant but M increases; and (4) G decreases and M increases. 4. Time exposed from shelter was inversely related to food availability. Fish subject to high food availability were significantly less active during the day than those with restricted rations. However, food availability had no significant effect on the extent to which fish were active at night. There was no evidence of variation in growth rate with food availability. 5. Salmon were predominantly nocturnal at high ration levels, consistent with their previously reported behaviour during winter. Rather than switching to diurnal behaviour at high temperatures per se, as previously was supposed, it appears that the fish are diurnal only to the extent needed to sustain a growth rate, and this extent depends on food availability. 6. Atlantic salmon parr modulate the amount of time they are active rather than growth when responding to variations in food availability over an order of magnitude.  相似文献

It is well documented that prior residence confers advantagesin territorial disputes, but its impact on other aspects ofbehavior and fitness is less understood. We tested how priorresidence influences the subsequent feeding behavior and growthperformance of dispersing Atlantic salmon fry (Salmo salar)using experimental manipulations of residence in a seminaturalstream tank. In replicated trials, groups of seven "primary"fish were released into the stream tank 3 days ahead of seven"secondary" fish. Standardized behavioral observations were madeon each fish over the following 14 days, after which all fishwere removed and measured. Primaries and secondaries were initiallythe same size and body condition and exhibited the same degreeof site fidelity. However, primaries darted higher into thewater column to intercept prey items, fed at a higher rate, and subsequently grew faster. Larger fish (in terms of body length)tended to be more dominant, and dominants grew faster than subordinates. However, there was no difference in dominance between primaries andsecondaries. These results suggest that the well-documentedadvantage of early-emerging salmon fry over late-emerging frycannot be completely attributed to intrinsic differences andthat the advantage is partly mediated via a prior residenceeffect. Furthermore, prior residents gain foraging advantageswithout necessarily becoming more dominant.  相似文献

For the 6 years for which detailed data are readily available, estimates of the survival of emergent fry of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., to the first and second autumns at a site on the Shelligan Burn are consistent with the dome-shaped Ricker model with about 11 emergent fry m−2 maximizing recruitment. The data are not satisfactorily fitted by the asymptotic Beverton and Holt model. A possible mechanism, which results from the observed inversely density-dependent growth, is discussed briefly.  相似文献

This study confirmed earlier evidence for a correlation between otolith increment width and resting metabolic rate in the absence of somatic growth in Atlantic salmon parr. However, increment width responded more conservatively to a change in temperature than did resting metabolic rate. Consequently, the study demonstrated that although increment width varied with temperature the process governing accretion rate was not simply related to resting metabolic rate.  相似文献
