Unit responses in the anterior zone of the suprasylvian gyrus to visual, electrodermal, and acoustic stimulation were investigated in experiments on unanesthetized cats immobilized with tubocurarine. Electrical activity was recorded from 131 units, 121 of which were spontaneously active. In 65.5% of cells responses consisted of a short or long increase or a decrease in intensity of spike activity. Most cells (58.2%) were monosensory. Responses to visual stimulation were given by 72% of neurons, to electrodermal by 61.6%, and to acoustic by 9.3%. The corresponding latent periods were 20–40, 20–30, and 15–20 msec. Responses of the same neurons to different peripheral stimuli were uniform or they differed in their dynamics. Intracellular recording gave responses in the form of EPSPs (amplitude 4–5 mV, duration 60–80 msec) or, rarely, IPSPs (amplitude 2–3 mV, duration 160–200 msec). The functional organization of the associative cortex and mechanisms of analysis of incoming afferent information are discussed.A. A. Postsynaptic potentials (PSPs) of 83 neurons in the motor cortex of unanesthetized cats in response to electrodermal, photic, and acoustic stimulation were investigated by intra-and quasi-intracellular recording methods. Most cells responded to stimulation of at least one limb. About 60% of neurons of the posterior and over 75% of neurons of the anterior sigmoid gyrus responded to stimulation of two (or more) limbs. In 29 of 39 neurons of the anterior and 12 of 44 of the posterior sigmoid gyrus PSPs with a short (less than 50 msec) and stable latent period were evoked by flashes and clicks. On presentation of two somesthetic stimuli complete blocking (if the interval was less than 30–60 msec) or weakening (interval 30–200 msec) of responses to the second (testing) stimulus was observed. On presentation of paired photic (or acoustic) stimuli or paired stimuli of different modalities at various intervals from 0 to 100 msec, the testing response was often potentiated. The character of the responses and their interaction thus differed from those obtained under chloralose anesthesia [6, 7]. It is postulated that under the action of chloralose a system of neurons with strong excitatory feedback is formed in the motor cortex which may respond to stimuli of different modalities by something resembling the "all or nothing" principle.Brain Institute, Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. Unit responses in the suprasylvian gyrus of the cat to flashes of different wavelengths were studied. Especially in the Clare-Bishop region, about 80% of suprasylvian neurons were found to be color-specific. Four classes of neurons responding differently to different regions of the spectrum were distinguished. The possible principle of coding of information on stimulus color by neurons of the suprasylvian areas is discussed.I. S. In response to stimulation of the posterior lateral nucleus in unanesthetized cats immobilized with D-tubocurarine an evoked potential consisting of three components with a latent period of 3–5 msec appeared in area 5b of the suprasylvian gyrus. All three components were reversed at about the same depth in the cortex (1500–1600 µ). Reversal of the potential shows that it is generated in that area by neurons evidently located in deeper layers of the cortex and is not conducted to it physically from other regions. Responses of 53 spontaneously active neurons in the same area of the cortex to stimulation of the posterior lateral nucleus were investigated. A characteristic feature of these reponses was that inhibition occurred nearly all of them. In 22 neurons the responses began with inhibition, which lasted from 30 to 400 msec. In 30 neurons inhibition appeared immediately after excitation while one neuron responded by excitation alone. The latent periods of the excitatory responses varied from 3 to 28 msec. The short latent period of the evoked potentials and of some single units responses (3–6 msec) confirms morphological evidence of direct connections between the posterior lateral nucleus and area 5b of the suprasylvian gyrus. Repetitive stimulation of that nucleus led to strengthening of both excitation and inhibition. Influences of the posterior lateral nucleus were opposite to those of the specific nuclei: the posterior ventrolateral nucleus and the lateral and medial geniculate bodies. Stimulation of the nonspecific reticular nucleus, however, evoked discharges from neurons like those produced by stimulation of the posterior lateral nucleus.A. A. Unit and focal responses arising in the parietal associative region (anterior part of the middle suprasylvian gyrus) to various forms of peripheral stimulation were investigated in acute experiments on cats anesthetized by intraperitoneal injection of chloralose (40 mg/kg) and pentobarbital (20 mg/kg). Under these conditions focal potentials of the associative response (AR) type appear. They consist of three components: negative, positive, and negative. The positive and second negative components have their polarity changed as the recording electrode is inserted to a depth of 1200–1500 µ. Two types of unit responses related to the development of the positive and negative phases are distinguished. This applies to responses of both monosensory and polysensory neurons, and even the same neuron may give responses of both first and second types because of their unstable latent period. In the case of intracellular or "partial intracellular" recording, excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs and IPSPs) corresponding to the first and second types of responses were observed, so that the total unit response had the form of an EPSP-IPSP-EPSP-IPSP sequence. With most neurons whose activity was recorded in this way the first EPSP and IPSP were not observed.State Medical Institute, Kemerovo. Of 103 neurons in the rostral part of the posterior sigmoid gyrus of the cat cortex 30 responded to stimulation of the ventro-posterolateral and ventrolateral nuclei of the thalamus (VPL and VL), 42 responded to stimulation of VL only, and 31 to stimulation of VPL only. It was shown by intracellular recording that stimulation of VPL induces a spike response with or without subsequent IPSPs in some neurons and an initial IPSP in others. The spike frequency of single neurons reached 60/sec, but the IPSP frequency never exceeded 10–20/sec. Stimulation of VL was accompanied by: a) antidromic spike responses; b) short-latency monosynaptic EPSPs and spikes capable of following a stimulation frequency of 100/sec; c) long-latency polysynaptic EPSPs and spikes appearing in response to stimulation at 4–8/sec; d) short-latency IPSPs; e) long-latency IPSPs increasing in intensity on repetition of infrequent stimuli. It is concluded that the afferent inputs from the relay nuclei to neurons of the somatosensory cortex are heterogeneous. An important role is postulated for recurrent inhibition in the genesis of the long-latency IPSPs arising in response to stimulation of VL, and for direct afferent inhibition during IPSPs evoked by stimulation of VPL. It is shown that the rostral part of the posterior sigmoid gyrus performs the role of somatic projection and motor cortex simultaneously.A. A. The activity of single neurons of the visual cortex in the initial state and upon presentation of a certain program of stimuli, which included a series of modality-specific (light flashes, continuous light) and nonspecific (clicks, tone) stimuli used separately and in combination, was recorded extracellularly by glass electrodes in unanesthetized and uncurarized white rats restrained in a stall. The responses of the neurons to flashes and clicks were analyzed by the poststimulus histogram method. The regular shifts of neuronal activity in response to light flashes (with a frequency of one per second) in the form of an increase or decrease of firing rate were noted not only during the first 150–200 msec (short-latent responses — SLR) but also later, after 700–800 msec (long-latent responses — LLR). The LLR differed from the SLR also by greater variability (decrease or increase upon repeating the stimuli) and by pronounced interaction with the modality-nonspecific stimuli, which had a weak effect on the SLR and by themselves very rarely evoked responses of the visual cortex neurons. The neuron could demonstrate several LLR with a different latent period. The independent nature of each LLR was indicated by the relative independence of its dynamics. All these data permit the consideration that one and the same neuron in one cycle of its activity can be included in different functional systems of the brain, which evidently provide direct reception of information arriving over specific sensory conductors and its subsequent processing. Therefore, neurons, which made up more than half of those investigated, can be regarded as polyfunctional.N. I. Changes of the activity of cortical neurons were studied in the posterior crucial gyrus and in the middle parts of the suprasylvian and ectosylvian gyri on cooling the brain to 18°C and below. In exact experiments it was noted that cooling the cortex to 18.8–21.8° causes a complete cessation of neuron activity. The kinetics of the change of activity under these conditions follows a definite order: first an increase of the frequency of spike discharges is observed (31–27°), then a decrease of their amplitude (at 25–22°), and finally a complete disappearance of neuron activity (at 21.8–18.8°). Discontinuation of the cooling leads to restoration of the activity of the nerve cells in inverse order: low-amplitude high-frequency discharges manifest (at 23–26°), the amplitude of the spikes increases (at 29–31°) and then the initial activity is restored (at 31–32°). The decrease of neuron activity depends on the rate of temperature drop in the cortex. The faster the cortex is cooled, the lower is the temperature at which the neurons cease to function. And conversely, slow cooling of the cortex causes an inactivation of the spike potentials at a higher temperature.S. M. Kirov Gorki State Medical Institute. Responses of 251 neurons in the anterior part of the middle suprasylvian gyrus to stimulation of primary sensory (auditory, visual, somatosensory) areas and also to acoustic, visual, and somatosensory stimuli were studied in acute experiments on cats anesthetized with chloralose (40 mg/kg) and pentobarbital (20 mg/kg). Three groups of neurons were distinguished by their responses to stimulation of the primary sensory areas: those responding by an increased firing rate (117) or by inhibition (35) and those not responding (99). Responses of 193 neurons to stimulation of the peripheral afferent systems were analyzed. Neurons of the parietal associative cortex responded more frequently to cortical stimulation than to peripheral. By the duration of the latent period of their response to cortical stimulation the neurons were divided into three groups: those with short (less than 20 msec), medium (20–30 msec), and long latent periods (over 30 msec). The first group was the largest.Kemerovo State Medical Institute. Translated from Neirofiziologiya, Vol. 4, No. 5, pp. 524–530, September–October, 1972.  相似文献

Responses of 304 neurons in the anterior part of the middle suprasylvian gyrus in cats to acoustic, photic, and somatosensory stimulation and also to simultaneous presentation of 2 or 3 stimuli of these modalities. Three groups of neurons were distinguished: those responding by an increased firing rate (187) or by inhibition (22) and those not responding (95). The first group comprised mono- (64) and polysensory (105) and well as neurons responding only to a combination (18). On the basis of the convergent properties of the polysensory neurons in this region it is postulated that the parietal cortex performs principally integrative processes based on iteraction of visual-cutaneous and cutaneo-auditory afferent information.State Medical Institute, Kemerovo. Neurons sending fibers to different loci of the suprasylvian gyrus (SSG) of the porpoise(Phocaena phocaena) cortex were located in the thalamus by retrograde horseradish peroxidase transport and fluorescent tracing techniques. Horseradish peroxidase injection into the anterior section of the suprasylvian gyrus led to retrograde labelling of neurons in the lateral portion of the ventrobasal complex of nuclei and the ventroposteroinferior nucleus. A group of labelled cells was found in the ventral section of the main medial geniculate nucleus. Injecting bisbenzimide into different loci of the medial suprasylvian gyrus also led to retrograde labelling of neurons belonging to the ventral division of the main medial geniculate nucleus. Somewhat lower numbers of labelled cells were found in the inferior nucleus of the pulvinar. Small groups of labelled neurons were also found in the lateral nucleus of the pulvinar, the medioventral nucleus of the medial geniculate body, and the posterior complex of nuclei. A similar distribution of labelled cells was also observed after injecting bisbenzimide into the more caudal portion of the gyrus, although the location of labelled cells in the ventral division of the main medial geniculate nucleus and the lower pulvinar nucleus were shifted in a lateral direction.A. Projections between areas 5 and 7 and the lateral suprasylvian gyrus (Clare-Bishop area) were investigated using anterograde degeneration techniques. This showed a topographic organization of projections from areas 5 and 7 to the lateral suprasylvian gyrus. Area 5 association fibers terminate mainly in the anterior portion of the lateral suprasylvian gyrus; this corresponds to the intermediate zone and anterior section of the posterior suprasylvian region. Area 7 efferents are located more caudally, terminating in the posterior section of the intermediate zone and in the posterior region, excluding the outer posterior limits. Fields 5 and 7 give rise to single efferent fibers terminating in the auditory cortex. Fibers from area 5 terminate in the medial ectosylvian and medial, sylvian gyri, i.e., in zones Al and AII or areas 22 and 50. A projection from area 7 terminates at the superior border of the medial ectosylvian gyrus, corresponding to the upper limit of zone A1 or areas 22 and 50.L. A. Responses of cortical neurons in the posterior sigmoid gyrus of cats anesthetized with chloralose to electrical stimulation of somatic and visceral nerves were recorded. Bimodal viscero-somatic neurons are predominant in this part of the cortex and some of them also respond to light. Besides the polysensory modally-specific neurons it was also possible to distinguish a group of modally nonspecific cells (27%), whose responses to different stimuli did not differ statistically from each other. Simultaneous stimulation of visceral and somatic nerves led to facilitation of activity of the long-latency neurons; this was reflected in a decrease of 10 msec in the latent period of the response and an increase in the number of spikes per discharge.A. Responses of caudate neurons to stimulation of the anterior sigmoid and various parts of the suprasylvian gyrus were studied in acute experiments on cats. The experiments consisted of two series: on animals with an intact thalamus and on animals after preliminary destruction of the nonspecific thalamic nuclei. Stimulation of all cortical areas tested in intact animals evoked complex multicomponent responses in caudate neurons with (or without) initial excitation, followed by a phase of inhibition and late activation. The latent periods of the initial responses to stimulation of all parts of the cortex were long and averaged 14.5–25.5 msec. Quantitative and qualitative differences were established in responses of the caudate neurons to stimulation of different parts of the cortex. Considerable convergence of cortical influences on neurons of the caudate nucleus was found. After destruction of the nonspecific thalamic nuclei all components of the complex response of the caudate neurons to cortical stimulation were preserved, and only the time course of late activation was modified.A. Unit responses in the anterior sigmoid gyrus of cats anesthetized with chloralose (70 mg/kg) to vestibular nerve stimulation and their interaction with responses to acoustic and facial nerve stimulation were investigated. The focus of maximal activity of the vestibular projection was shown to lie a little rostrally to the anterior suprasylvian sulcus. The modality specificity of this part of the cortex to vestibular impulses is reflected in the shortest values of latent periods and the distinct phasic character of the responses, and also in the numerical preponderance of neurons with short-latency responses. Although considerable topographic overlapping of the vestibular projection by acoustic and somatosensory (facial zone) projections is found, the vestibular afferent input predominates over the other afferent inputs.I. Unit activity in the caudate nucleus evoked by paired stimulation of the anterior sigmoid and middle suprasylvian gyri was studied in acute experiments on cats. Responses in most neurons to testing stimulation of the anterior sigmoid gyrus during the period of inhibition of spontaneous activity evoked by conditioning stimulation of the suprasylvian gyrus were preserved, but in isolated cases they were actually facilitated. Meanwhile conditioning stimulation of the anterior sigmoid gyrus in the period of inhibition depressed responses to testing stimulation of the suprasylvian gyrus. Similar results were obtained in experiments on animals with deep transcortical sections between the sensomotor and parietal regions, ruling out the possibility of interaction between the stimulated zones at the cortical level.A. Investigation of unit responses of the cerebellar cortex (lobules VI–VII of the vermis) to acoustic stimulation showed that the great majority of neurons responded by a discharge of one spike or a group of spikes with a latent period of 10–40 msec and with a low fluctuation value. Neurons identified as Purkinje cells responded to sound either by inhibition of spontaneous activity or by a "climbing fiber response" with a latent period of 40–60 msec and with a high fluctuation value. In 4 of 80 neurons a prolonged (lasting about 1 sec or more), variable response with a latent period of 225–580 msec was observed. The minimal thresholds of unit responses to acoustic stimuli were distributed within the range from –7 to 77 dB, with a mode from 20 to 50 dB. All the characteristics of the cerebellar unit responses studied were independent of the intensity, duration, and frequency of the sound, like neurons of short-latency type in the inferior colliculi. In certain properties — firing pattern, latent period, and threshold of response — the cerebellar neurons resemble neurons of higher levels of the auditory system: the medial geniculate body and auditory cortex.I. The responses of the neurons to electrocutaneous stimulation, light flashes, and clicks in the cortical region of the motor representation of the rabbit forelimb were investigated by means of intra- and quasiintracellular recordings. In unanesthetized animals, in only eight out of 65 neurons did postsynaptic potentials (PSP) with a short (10–30 msec) latent period arise in response to light and sound. In 15 neurons, long latency (50–150 msec) responses to one or both of these stimuli were recorded. In most of the cells, short latency stable responses to stimulation of the contralateral forelimb and unstable long latency responses to light and/or sound, frequently of the nature of an increase in the background "synaptic noise," were observed. Under deep chloralose narcosis, the type of convergence was sharply changed: in most of the neurons, short latency responses to all the stimuli used appeared. However, the picture of convergence differed from that described earlier [5,6] for the motor cortex of the cat under chloralose narcosis. The responses to various stimuli were less similar to one another; the somesthetic modality substantially "predominated" (judging by the stability and nature of the interaction of the response).Brain Institute, Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. In cats we have simultaneously (monopolarly) recorded the responses in different parts of the associative cortex (ac) (motor cortex, proreal, orbital, anterior marginal, and mid-part of the suprasylvian gyri) appearing for different peripheral stimulations (stimulation of the skin of the forelimbs, a light flash and a sound click). In all the regions of the ac associative responses (ar) almost identical in configuration appeared to all the peripheral stimulations. The ar of the orbitofrontal and the motor cortex differed from the ar of the suprasylvian gyrus in the shorter latent period and greater stability. In each part of the ac we found the same focus of maximum activity for all the peripheral stimulations. For paired stimulations of the same and different modalities the greatest stability in relation to the blocking influence due to the conditioning stimulation characterized the ar which appeared in response to skin stimulation in the orbitofrontal cortex and the ar which appeared in the suprasylvian gyrus on exposure to a light flash. It is assumed that in the orbitofrontal cortex an efferent discharge is formed in response to pulses of different sensory modality whereas in the suprasylvian gyrus there is only sensory integration. Some aspects of afferent convergence are discussed.Institute of Physiology, Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR, Tbilisi. Cats were immobilized with D-tubocurarine. Responses of 231 neurons of the thalamic nucleus lateralis posterior to cortical stimulation in areas 5b and 21 of the suprasylvian gyrus were studied. Responses of 34 neurons were antidromic, indicating the existence of a direct projection of this nucleus to the cortical areas studied. This projection was most extensive in area 5b. The long latencies (up to 60 msec) of the antidromic responses of some neurons indicate that axons of certain neurons of thalamic nucleus lateralis posterior conduct excitation very slowly (0.3 m/sec). Orthodromic responses with latencies of 2–3 msec to cortical stimulation point to the presence of direct pathways from cortex to nucleus. The flow of afferent impulses into the nucleus from area 5b is stronger than from area 21. Convergence of impulses from these areas was observed on 44% of neurons of the nucleus. Cortical stimulation of areas 5b and 21 evoked postsynaptic inhibition in most neurons of the nucleus. It is concluded that two-way direct connections exist between nucleus lateralis posterior of the thalamus and the suprasylvian cortex.  相似文献
