There is a need for a device for improved management of the airway of small laboratory animals during general anaesthesia. This report introduces such a device, referred to here as the airway device (AD). The AD has some similarity to the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) developed for human patients, but the mask portion of the device is specifically designed for small laboratory animals. In addition, the device has an oesophageal extension and unlike the LMA does not have a cuff associated with the mask. This report also shares experience of tests of one prototype AD with six New Zealand white rabbits. The AD was used for administering isoflurane and its effectiveness was evaluated during conditions of spontaneous and controlled intermittent positive pressure ventilation. The results provide encouragement for further development of the AD for airway management of small laboratory animals.  相似文献

Alphaxolone-alphadolone anaesthesia in laboratory animals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The anaesthetic steroid combination alphaxolone-alphadolone is a well-established short-acting injectable agent for cats and primates. It can be recommended for intravenous administration to rats, rabbits, neonatal pigs, mice and hamsters. It has limited value in mice and hamsters by the intraperitoneal route, but provides sedation in ferrets and neonatal pigs when injected intramuscularly. It can be given repeatedly or continuously to maintain anaesthesia for long periods without the development of tolerance or cumulation.  相似文献

Campylobacter pylori, first isolated in 1982, is now recognized as a primary cause of acute gastritis in man, and there is substantial data suggesting that this organism also plays an important role in the pathogenesis of duodenal ulcers. More recently, Campylobacter-like organisms and other morphologically distinct spiral bacteria have been isolated from gastric lesions in a variety of laboratory animal species. The zoonotic significance of C. pylori and other gastric spiral bacteria isolated from man as well as laboratory and domestic animals requires further study. An appreciation of the ecological and pathological role of gastric spiral bacteria in domestic and laboratory animals is an essential first step when considering the role and proper selection of animal models in the study of C. pylori gastroduodenal disease.  相似文献

Environmental enrichment for laboratory animals has come to be viewed as a potential method for improving animal well-being in addition to its original sense as a paradigm for learning how experience molds the brain. It is suggested that the term housing supplementation better describes the wide range of alterations to laboratory animal housing that has been proposed or investigated. Changes in the environments of animals have important effects on brain structure, physiology, and behavior--including recovery from illness and injury--and on which genes are expressed in various organs. Studies are reviewed that show how the brain and other organs respond to environmental change. These data warrant caution that minor cage supplementation intended for improvement of animal well-being may alter important aspects of an animal's physiology and development in a manner not easily predicted from available research. Thus, various forms of housing supplementation, although utilized or even preferred by the animals, may not enhance laboratory animal well-being and may be detrimental to the research for which the laboratory animals are used.  相似文献

In order to determine the presence of dermatophytes in healthy skin, 200 animals from the animal house of Faculty of Medicine, U.N.A.M., were studied; these were 50 rats, 50 rabbits, 50 mice, and 50 guinea pigs. Out of these 200 animals, 29.5% had positive isolation of Trichophyton mentagrophytes, var. lacticolor. The frequency variation was: rats, 68%; rabbits, 36%; mice, 8%; and guinea pigs, 6%. Male rats and male rabbits, had the higher incidence of positives. The epidemiologic repercussion of these and the significance to use these animals in biomedical investigation is discussed.  相似文献
