The aim of our study was to compare crank torque profile and perceived exertion between the Monark ergometer (818 E) and two outdoor cycling conditions: level ground and uphill road cycling. Seven male cyclists performed seven tests in seated position at different pedaling cadences: (a) in the laboratory at 60, 80, and 100 rpm; (b) on level terrain at 80 and 100 rpm; and (c) on uphill terrain (9.25% grade) at 60 and 80 rpm. The cyclists exercised for 1 min at their maximal aerobic power. The Monark ergometer and the bicycle were equipped with the SRM Training System (Schoberer, Germany) for the measurement of power output (W), torque (Nxm), pedaling cadence (rpm), and cycling velocity (kmxh-1). The most important findings of this study indicate that at maximal aerobic power the crank torque profiles in the Monark ergometer (818 E) were significantly different (especially on dead points of the crank cycle) and generate a higher perceived exertion compared with road cycling conditions.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to develop a 3-minute, all-out test protocol using the Monark cycle ergometer for estimating the critical power (CP) and anaerobic work capacity (AWC) with the resistance based on body weight. Twelve moderately trained adults (mean age ± SD = 23.2 ± 3.5 years) performed an incremental cycle ergometer test to exhaustion. The CP and AWC were estimated from the original work limit (W(lim)) vs. time limit (T(lim)) relationship (CP(PT)) and a 3-minute all-out test (CP(3min)) against a fixed resistance and compared with the CP and AWC estimated from the new 3-minute tests on the Monark cycle ergometer (CP(3.5%) and CP(4.5%)). The resistance values for the CP(3.5%) and CP(4.5%) tests were set at 3.5 and 4.5% of the subject's body weight (kilograms). The results indicated that there were no significant differences (p > 0.05) among mean CP values for CP(PT) (178 ± 47 W), CP(3.5%) (173 ± 40 W), and CP(4.5%) (186 ± 44 W). The mean CP(3min) (193 ± 54 W), however, was significantly greater than CP(PT) and CP(3.5%). There were no significant differences in AWC for the CP(PT) (13,412 ± 6,247 J), CP(3min) (10,895 ± 2,923 J), and CP(4.5%) (9,842 ± 4,394 J). The AWC values for the CP(PT) and CP(3min), however, were significantly greater than CP(3.5%) (8,357 ± 2,946 J). The results of this study indicated that CP and AWC could be estimated from a single 3-minute work bout test on the Monark cycle ergometer with the resistance set at 4.5% of the body weight. A single work bout test with the resistance based on the individual's body weight provides a practical and accessible method to estimate CP and AWC.  相似文献

The fish assemblage of a traditional Kata fishery and the stomach contents of Wallago attu were studied over a period of one year from a large floodplain system in Bangladesh. A total of 19 species of fish and 2 species of shrimp were recorded. W. attu (9.7–17.8%), Mystus vittatus (6.0–11.3%), M. aor (5.0–12.1%), Amblypharyngodon mola (4.4–9.3%) and Mastacembelus armatus (3.5–10.5%) dominated the catch. W.␣attu occupied the top position in abundance throughout the year, followed by M. vittatus and M. aor. Bagridae, Siluridae and Cyprinidae were three major families that contributed respectively 21.0, 17.4 and 16.1% of the total catch. Considerable seasonality was observed in the abundance of different fishes. A total of 14 different prey items were recorded, belonging to three major groups (fish, prawn and plant matters). The fish fed on at least eight species of small fishes (A. mola, M. vittatus, M. cavasius, Puntius stigma, P. ticto, Puntius sp., Glossogobius guris, and Heteropneustes fossilis) and some other unidentified small fishes. Other major prey items were small prawn, fish and prawn remains, and macroalgae. A. mola was the most important food item, contributing 23.7% of the total amount of diet by weight and 19.9% by frequency of occurrence. A. mola was followed by unidentified small prawn (13.7%), M. vittatus (13.1%), and unidentified small fishes (8.8%) by weight and by unidentified small fishes (15.9%), fish remains (12.5%), and M.␣vittatus (12.3%) by occurrence. Of the major diet categories, fish contributed 74.3% of the total diet by weight and 80.9% by occurrence, prawn contributed 18.5% by weight and 11.0% by occurrence and plants contributed 7.2% by weight and 8.1% by occurrence. A. mola and small shrimps were positively selected by W. attu. We concluded that W. attu is a piscivorous predator with potential impacts on prey fish communities; we also hypothesized that a specialized food-web based on the Kata fishery exists in and around the Katas which is of particular ecological significance.  相似文献

The 30-second, all-out Wingate test evaluates anaerobic performance using an upper or lower body cycle ergometer (cycle Wingate test). A recent study showed that using a modified electromagnetically braked elliptical trainer for Wingate testing (EWT) leads to greater power outcomes because of larger muscle group recruitment. The main purpose of this study was to modify an elliptical trainer using an easily understandable mechanical brake system instead of an electromagnetically braked modification. Our secondary aim was to determine a proper test load for the EWT to reveal the most efficient anaerobic test outcomes such as peak power (PP), average power (AP), minimum power (MP), power drop (PD), and fatigue index ratio (FI%) and to evaluate the retest reliability of the selected test load. Delta lactate responses (ΔLa) were also analyzed to confirm all the anaerobic performance of the athletes. Thirty healthy and well-trained male university athletes were selected to participate in the study. By analysis of variance, an 18% body mass workload yielded significantly greater test outcomes (PP = 19.5 ± 2.4 W·kg, AP = 13.7 ± 1.7 W·kg, PD = 27.9 ± 5 W·s, FI% = 58.4 ± 3.3%, and ΔLa = 15.4 ± 1.7 mM) than the other (12-24% body mass) tested loads (p < 0.05). Test and retest results for relative PP, AP, MP, PD, FI%, and ΔLa were highly correlated (r = 0.97, 0.98, 0.94, 0.91, 0.81, and 0.95, respectively). In conclusion, it was found that the mechanically braked modification of an elliptical trainer successfully estimated anaerobic power and capacity. A workload of 18% body mass was optimal for measuring maximal and reliable anaerobic power outcomes. Anaerobic testing using an EWT may be more useful to athletes and coaches than traditional cycle ergometers because a greater proportion of muscle groups are worked during exercise on an elliptical trainer.  相似文献

Four incremental protocols of knee extension exercise of different stage durations were compared to study the effect of the protocol upon power output at the last stage (P peak). Previous studies of knee extension have found very different power outputs with similar ergometers and these large differences have been interpreted as being the result of the fatigue due to the durations of the protocols. The knee extension device used in previous studies was modified to avoid the action of the knee and hip flexors: the subjects pushing on a lever instead of pulling a rod. In the present study five subjects performed four incremental knee extension exercises which differed with regard to stage duration (60, 90, 180 or 360 s) on this ergometer. The P peak, peak oxygen uptake (O2peak) and peak heart rate (HRpeak) were measured at the end of each of these four incremental protocols. In eight subjects, the reliability of the protocols with the two shortest increments (60 and 90-s stages) was verified by measuring P peak at 60 s and 90 s (P peak60, P peak90) twice. The knee ergometer proposed in the present paper was easy to use without any special training and should improve the measurement of P peak. The P peak60 [49.4 (SD 5.6) W] was higher than at 180 s [P peak180, 43.6 (SD 5.8) W, P < 0.05] and at 360 s [P peak360, 43.4 (SD 5.3) W, P < 0.05]. All the other differences in P peak, O2 peak and HRpeak were not significant. All correlations between P peak60, P peak90, P peak180 and P peak360 were significant, except those between P peak360 and P peak90 or P peak180. The effect of the stage duration on power output and oxygen uptake at the end of the knee extension exercises was not great. Consequently, the large differences in power output and oxygen uptake observed in previous studies cannot be explained by the protocol only. The significant difference between P peak 60 and P peak90 was of the order of 10% in agreement with findings in the literature using cycle ergometry. The reliability of P peak60 and P peak90 was high and the use of these protocols can be recommended if further studies show that the measurement of P peak, is useful in the evaluation of local endurance. The aims of the present study were: first, to assess the interindividual variations of a spontaneously chosen crank rate (SCCR) in relation to the power developed during an incremental upper body exercise on an arm ergometer set at a constant power regime, and second, to compare heart rate (HR) responses, expired minute ventilation ( E) and oxygen consumption (O2) when the pedal rates were chosen spontaneously (TSCCR) or set at ±10% of the freely chosen rates (T+10% and T−10%, respectively). The mean pedal rate values were linearly related (P < 0.01) with the power developed during arm cranking (r = 0.96), although large variations of pedalling rate strategies were observed between subjects. Maximal power (MP) and time to exhaustion values were significantly higher (P < 0.05) during TSCCR than during T+10% and T−10%. Peak O2 values were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in T+10% than in TSCCR and T−10%. The increase in HR, E, and O2 mean values, in relation to the increase in the power developed, was significantly higher (P < 0.05) when the pedal rate was set at plus 10% of the SCCR (T±10%) than in the two other conditions. The findings of the present study suggest that the use of an electromagnetically braked ergometer, which automatically adjusts the resistance component to maintain a constant work rate, should be used in order to achieve the highest MP values during an incremental upper body exercise. The purpose of the present study was to use ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) from the Borg (6-20) and OMNI-Leg (0-10) scales to determine the Physical Working Capacity at the Borg and OMNI thresholds (PWC(BORG) and PWC(OMNI)). PWC(BORG) and PWC(OMNI) were compared with other fatigue thresholds determined from the measurement of heart rate (the Physical Working Capacity at the Heart Rate Threshold: PWC(HRT)), and oxygen consumption (the Physical Working Capacity at the Oxygen Consumption Threshold, PWC(VO2)), as well as the ventilatory threshold (VT). Fifteen men and women volunteers (mean age +/- SD = 22 +/- 1 years) performed an incremental test to exhaustion on an electronically braked ergometer for the determination of VO2 peak and VT. The subjects also performed 4 randomly ordered workbouts to exhaustion at different power outputs (ranging from 60 to 206W) for the determination of PWC(BORG), PWC(OMNI), PWC(HRT), and PWC(VO2). The results indicated that there were no significant mean differences among the fatigue thresholds: PWC(BORG) (mean +/- SD = 133 +/- 37W; 67 +/- 8% of VO2 peak), PWC(OMNI) (137 +/- 44W; 68 +/- 9% of VO2 peak), PWC(HRT) (135 +/- 36W; 68 +/- 8% of VO2 peak), PWC(VO2) (145 +/- 41W; 72 +/- 7% of VO2 peak) and VT (131 +/- 45W; 66 +/- 8% of VO2 peak). The results of this study indicated that the mathematical model used to estimate PWC(HRT) and PWC(VO2) can be applied to ratings of perceived exertion to determine PWC(BORG) and PWC(OMNI) during cycle ergometry. Salient features of the PWC(BORG) and PWC(OMNI) tests are that they are simple to administer and require the use of only an RPE scale, a stopwatch, and a cycle ergometer. Furthermore, the power outputs at the PWC(BORG) and PWC(OMNI) may be useful to estimate the VT noninvasively and without the need for expired gas analysis.  相似文献

A novel approach has been developed for the quantification of total mechanical power output produced by an isolated, well-defined muscle group during dynamic exercise in humans at different contraction frequencies. The calculation of total power output comprises the external power delivered to the ergometer (i.e., the external power output setting of the ergometer) and the "internal" power generated to overcome inertial and gravitational forces related to movement of the lower limb. Total power output was determined at contraction frequencies of 60 and 100 rpm. At 60 rpm, the internal power was 18+/- 1 W (range: 16-19 W) at external power outputs that ranged between 0 and 50 W. This was less (P<0.05) than the internal power of 33+/-2 W (27-38 W) at 100 rpm at 0-50 W. Moreover, at 100 rpm, internal power was lower (P<0.05) at the higher external power outputs. Pulmonary oxygen uptake was observed to be greater (P<0.05) at 100 than at 60 rpm at comparable total power outputs, suggesting that mechanical efficiency is lower at 100 rpm. Thus a method was developed that allowed accurate determination of the total power output during exercise generated by an isolated muscle group at different contraction frequencies.  相似文献

The effect of a 3-week exercise programme on performance and economy of walking was analysed in 16 male patients with chronic heart failure [mean age 51.8 (SD 6.9) years, height 174.9 (SD 6.3) cm, body mass 75.3 (SD 11.5) kg, ejection fraction 20.8 (SD 5.0)%]. They were submitted to a cardiopulmonary exercise test on a cycle ergometer and a 6-min walking test on a treadmill before and after the period of exercise training. The training programme consisted of interval cycle (five times a week for 15 min), and treadmill ergometer training (three times a week for 10 min) at approximately 70% cycling peak oxygen uptake (O2peak) and supplementary exercises (three times a week for 20 min). Compared to the pre values cycling O2peak [11.9 (SD 2.9) vs 14.0 (SD 2.3) ml ·  kg–1 · min–1], maximal self paced walking speed [0.68 (SD 0.33) vs 1.16 (SD 0.30) m · s–1], and net walking power [2.16 (SD 0.89) vs 2.73 (SD 0.91) W · kg–1] had increased (P < 0.01) while net energy cost [3.31 (SD 0.66) vs 2.33 (SD 0.38) J · kg–1 ·  m–1] had decreased (P < 0.001) after the training period. Approximately 42% of the increase of walking speed resulted from a higher walking power output, whereas approximately 58% corresponded to a positive effect on walking economy. The improvement in walking economy was a function of an increase in walking velocity itself and a result of a more efficient walking technique. These results would indicate that in patients with marked exercise intolerance, adequate exercise training programmes could contribute to favourable metabolic changes with positive effects on the economy of motion. Research protocols require that the actual braking power (Wb) of electrically braked ergometers (EBE) is precisely set at the chosen power level, stable, and universally programmable. No commercially available EBEs appear to meet jointly the above conditions. In fact, EBE settings were found to deviate up to 25% from the reference level (WR), their Wb to drop as a result of increased temperature as much as 30% within 1 h of continuous operation, and the programming features to be limited and rigid. To overcome the above pitfalls a procedure for building or improving EBEs is presented whereby 1) the stator of the brake used as a dynamometer is mounted on ball bearings, the torque being transmitted to a strain gauge; 2) the number of revolutions of the rotor is measured on a cogwheel by a proximity detector and an impulse counter; and 3) the torque and impulse number signals are fed into a low-priced microcomputer controlling the brake's power supply. The device has proved to be satisfactory in following any preprogrammed exercise-forcing functions. In the range approximately 10-500 W, Wb = WR +/- 1%.  相似文献

The necessity of assessing the accuracy of spatial data derived from remote sensing methods and used in geographic information system (GIS) analyses has been regarded as a critical component of many projects. In this article, supervised classified QuickBird satellite imageries of submersed macrophytes of the Gavaraget region of Lake Sevan (Armenia) during 2006–2008 are validated in a GIS environment. The results of this assessment are represented by error matrices presenting the overall accuracy, the user and producer accuracies in each category, as well as the kappa coefficients. The assessments were done at three levels: the vegetation types, the growth (vertical) type, and the species levels. At the vegetation level, an overall accuracy of more than 86% was achieved in 2006 and 2007, while that in 2008 was about 72%. Substantial agreements were achieved between the classified remote sensing data and the reference (groundtruth) data for both 2006 and 2007. Only a fair agreement was attained in 2008. The kappa coefficients ranged from 0.39 to 0.89. At the growth type level, only the 2006 classification attained a substantial agreement, with an overall accuracy of 80%. The 2007 and 2008 classifications had above average and average overall accuracies of 72 and 64%, respectively. The kappa coefficient had a lowest value of 0.35 and a highest value of 0.70 at the growth type level. At the species level, Chara spp. or Zannichellia palustris and Potamogeton pectinatus had high user accuracies of more than 90% and a high overall accuracy of 82% in 2006. High user accuracies (>80%) occurred for P. pectinatus (for 2007 and 2008) and No Vegetation (for 2007). The remaining species, however, had low user and producer accuracies of less than 64%. The kappa coefficients ranged between 0.36 and 0.73 at the species level.  相似文献

Two types of rapidly biodegradable vegetable products (the liquid fraction of clover and the glycerol-containing sidestream from biodiesel production) were selected for anodic oxidation in microbial fuel cells (MFC) equipped with a biocathode. As benchmark references, five abundant amino-acids in plant sap (l-glutamine, l-glutamic acid, l-asparagine, l-aspartic acid and l-alanine) were tested separately. Their performance was in the same order of magnitude of clover sap oxidation (145–225 A m−3 MFC; 39–95 W m−3 MFC). Glycerol oxidation resulted in competitive current and power outputs (111 A m−3 MFC; 23 W m−3 MFC).  相似文献

Photoperiodic time measurement regulating larval diapause in the pitcher-plant mosquito, Wyeomyia smithii, varies in a close relationship with latitude. The critical photoperiod mediating the maintenance and termination of diapause is positively correlated with latitude (r 2 = 0.977) among six populations from southern (30–31° N), intermediate (40° N), and northern (46–49° N) latitudes in North America. The developmental response to unnaturally short and to unnaturally long photoperiods declines with increasing latitude, so that longer critical photoperiods are associated with a downward rather than a lateral shift in the photoperiodic response curve. Exotic light and dark cycles of varying period (T) with a short (10 h) photophase and a scotophase ranging from 14 (T = 24) to 62 (T = 72) h, reveal two geographic patterns: a decline in perturbability of the photoperiodic clock with increasing latitude, and no change with latitude in the 21-h period of rising and falling development with increasing T. These results show (1) that there is a rhythmic component to photoperiodic time measurement in W. smithii, (2) that the period of this rhythm is about 21 h in all populations, and (3) that more northern populations show decreasing responsiveness to photoperiod and increasing stability against perturbation by exotic period lengths (T > 24). Previous studies on W.␣smithii indicate that this single temperate species of a tropical and subtropical genus has evolved from south to north. We therefore conclude that the evolution of increasing critical photoperiod in W. smithii during its adaptive radiation into North America has more likely involved the amplitude and not the period of the underlying circadian pacemaker. In tropical lakes relatively little is known about the general relationship between nutrient concentration and phytoplankton biomass. Using data from 192 lakes from tropical and subtropical regions we examine the relationship between total P (TP) and chlorophyll (Chl). The lakes are all located between 30° S to 31° N include systems in Asia, Africa, and North and South America but are dominated by Brazilian (n=79) and subtropical N. American (n=67) systems. The systems vary in morphometry (mean depth and lake area), trophic state as well total N (TN) to␣total P (TP) ratios and light extinction. Despite a nearly 500-fold range in TP concentrations (2–970 μg P l−1), there was a poorer relationship between log TP and log Chl (r 2=0.42) than is generally observed for temperate systems from either narrow or broad geographic regions. N limitation is not a likely explanation for the relatively weak TP–Chl relationship in the tropical–subtropical systems. Systems had high average TN:TP ratios and neither a multiple regression with log TP and log TN nor separating systems with high TN:TP (>17 by weight) improved the predictive power of the log TP–log Chl relationship.  相似文献

Summary Somatic embryogenesis from mature zygotic embryos of salgare?o pine (Pinus nigra Arn. ssp. salzmannii) was induced after 2 wk of culture in L1 medium [Murashige and Skoog mineral solution with 10.7 μM naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 8.8 μM 6-benzyladenine (BA)] or L2 medium [Gupta and Durzan mineral solution (DCR)] supplemented with the phytohormone combination as above. Four different combinations of growth regulators, NAA (2.6–10.7 μM) and BA (6.6–8.8 μM), were tried for subsequent passage. The best percentage of embryo induction and manifestation was obtained on DCR medium with 2.6 μM NAA and 6.6–8.8 μM BA. Transfer of isolated somatic embryos from the basal media to L3 medium (Quoirin and Le Poivre modified mineral solution without hormones and supplemented with 0.3% activated charcoal), facilitated random embryo maturation and some development into plantlets.  相似文献

William Bateson (1861–1926) has long occupied a controversial role in the history of biology at the turn of the twentieth century. For the most part, Bateson has been situated as the British translator of Mendel or as the outspoken antagonist of W.␣F. R. Weldon and Karl Pearson’s biometrics program. Less has been made of Bateson’s transition from embryologist to advocate for discontinuous variation, and the precise role of British and American influences in that transition, in the years leading up to the publication of his massive Materials for the Study of Variation (1894). In this paper, I first attempt to trace Bateson’s development in his early career before turning to search for the development of the moniker “anti-Darwinist” that has been attached to Bateson in well-known histories of the neo-Darwinian Synthesis.  相似文献

The vertical positioning of benthic invertebrates should be a trade-off between the risky, but productive, sediment surface and the safer, but physiologically harsher, conditions deeper down in the sediment. This is because the foraging efficiency of benthic fish decreases with sediment depth, whereas the sediment surface is generally better oxygenated and has a higher resource quality than lower layers. We studied how two benthic fish predators, bream (Abramis brama) and ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus), affected the community composition and vertical distribution of benthos, and their indirect effects on algae and suspended material, in field enclosures. Whereas bream had significant effects on the density, composition and distribution of the benthos, ruffe had no such effects. The total benthos biomass in bream treatments was an-order of magnitude lower in the upper sediment layer (0–1 cm) and three times lower in the middle layer (1–3 cm) than in the controls, whereas there were no significant effects in the deepest layer (3–10 cm). Bivalves persisted in the deepest layer although their density was reduced in shallow sediment, whereas gastropods faced the risk of local extinction in the presence of bream. As indirect effects, small-bodied cladocerans, phytoplankton, periphyton and both organic and inorganic suspended material were higher in the bream treatments. We␣conclude that the impact of bream diminished substantially with increasing sediment depth, enabling invertebrates to survive in the sediment and to persist in the presence of bream. However, there were␣no␣indications of any group adjusting their vertical position behaviourally as a response to predation threat.  相似文献

Two field experiments were conducted in Hawaii to determine the responses of lepidopteran pests and their associated natural enemies to broccoli (Brassica oleracea), grown in monoculture or interplanted with chili pepper (Capsicum annuum), or yellow sweetclover (YSC) (Melilotus officinalis). The population responses of Artogeia rapae and Trichoplusia ni to habitat types were not consistent during the field trials. Additionally, their reactions to habitat diversification differed according to non-host plant species. For example, Trichoplusia ni densities were significantly lower in the broccoli–YSC habitat contrasted with the broccoli–pepper habitat on most sampling dates. Similarly, the proportion of plants damaged by Hellula undalis was significantly lower in the broccoli–YSC habitat contrasted with broccoli–pepper habitat. Findings from the study, suggest that biological control agents (e.g., spiders, parasitoids, and␣entomopathogens) are the most significant factors influencing the abundance of A.␣rapae in habitat type and that these agents inflict greater mortality on A. rapae in diculture than monoculture habitats.  相似文献

During 2002–2004, three laboratories in Canada and France collaborated to improve initiation of somatic embryogenesis (SE) in jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.), eastern white pine (P. strobus L.), maritime pine (P. pinaster Ait.), and Scots pine (P.␣sylvestris L.), giving particular attention to the effects of (1) N-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-N′-phenylurea (CPPU) versus various concentrations of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and benzyladenine (BA), (2) differences in basal nutrient media, i.e., macro- and microelements, and (3) gelling agent concentration. The work was carried out separately at␣each laboratory, but the details of media compositions were shared and tested on their respective species. Results indicate that the developmental stage of the zygotic embryo (ZE) and genotype effects had a large influence on SE initiation, and that genetic effects were consistent over time. Different species responded differently to PGR types and concentration, basal nutrient media, trace elements, and their combinations. Currently, our best initiation rates based on a selected group of genotypes, optimal development stage of ZE, and medium are 3.9% for jack pine, 54.6% for eastern white pine, 76.2% for maritime pine, and 19.7% for Scots pine.  相似文献
