Fisher's theory of the sex ratio may be extended to the social Hymenoptera; this extension must consider the unusual genetic structure of the Hymenoptera. Queens, workers, and laying workers generally have different equilibrial sex ratios of offspring and different equilibrial ratios of investment in offspring of the two sexes; these differences are the consequence of asymmetries in the degrees of relatedness between the queen, a worker, and a laying worker to male and female offspring. The equilibrial ratios of investment for the queen, a worker, and a laying worker are derived by finding the relative expected reproductive successes of genes in males and in reproductive females.  相似文献

Worker policing (mutual repression of reproduction) in the eusocial Hymenoptera represents a leading example of how coercion can facilitate cooperation. The occurrence of worker policing in “primitively” eusocial species with low mating frequencies, which lack relatedness differences conducive to policing, suggests that separate factors may underlie the origin and maintenance of worker policing. We tested this hypothesis by investigating conflict over male parentage in the primitively eusocial, monandrous bumblebee, Bombus terrestris. Using observations, experiments, and microsatellite genotyping, we found that: (a) worker‐ but not queen‐laid male eggs are nearly all eaten (by queens, reproductive, and nonreproductive workers) soon after being laid, so accounting for low observed frequencies of larval and adult worker‐produced males; (b) queen‐ and worker‐laid male eggs have equal viabilities; (c) workers discriminate between queen‐ and worker‐laid eggs using cues on eggs and egg cells that almost certainly originate from queens. The cooccurrence in B. terrestris of these three key elements of “classical” worker policing as found in the highly eusocial, polyandrous honeybees provides novel support for the hypothesis that worker policing can originate in the absence of relatedness differences maintaining it. Worker policing in B. terrestris almost certainly arose via reproductive competition among workers, that is, as “selfish” policing.  相似文献

The median proportion of investment in females among 11 populations of seven bumble bee (Bombus) species was 0.32 (range 0.07 to 0.64). By contrast, two species of workerless social parasites in the related genus Psithyrus had female-biased sex allocation, the reasons for which remain unclear. Male-biased sex allocation in Bombus contradicts the predictions of Trivers and Hare''s sex ratio model for the social Hymenoptera, which are that the population sex investment ratio should be 0.5 (1:1) under queen control and 0.75 (3:1 females:males) under worker control (assuming single, once-mated, outbred queens and non-reproductive workers). Male bias in Bombus does not appear to be either an artefact, or purely the result of symbiotic sex ratio distorters. According to modifications of the Trivers–Hare model, the level of worker male-production in Bombus is insufficient to account for observed levels of male bias. There is also no evidence that male bias arises from either local resource competition (related females compete for resources) or local mate enhancement (related males cooperate in securing mates). Bulmer presented models predicting sexual selection for protandry (males are produced before females) in annual social Hymenoptera and, as a consequence (given some parameter values), male-biased sex allocation. Bumble bees fit the assumptions of Bulmer''s models and are protandrous. These models therefore represent the best current explanation for the bees'' male-biased sex investment ratios. This conclusion suggests that the relative timing of the production of the sexes strongly influences sex allocation in the social Hymenoptera.  相似文献

Background

Cooperation and conflict in social insects are closely linked to the genetic structure of the colony. Kin selection theory predicts conflict over the production of males between the workers and the queen and between the workers themselves, depending on intra-colonial relatedness but also on other factors like colony efficiency, sex ratios, cost of worker reproduction and worker dominance behaviour. In most bumblebee (Bombus) species the queen wins this conflict and often dominates male production. However, most studies in bumblebees have been conducted with only a few selected, mostly single mated species from temperate climate regions. Here we study the genetic colony composition of the facultative polyandrous neotropical bumblebee Bombus wilmattae, to assess the outcome of the queen-worker conflict over male production and to detect potential worker policing.

Results

A total of 120 males from five colonies were genotyped with up to nine microsatellite markers to infer their parentage. Four of the five colonies were queen right at point of time of male sampling, while one had an uncertain queen status. The workers clearly dominated production of males with an average of 84.9% +/- 14.3% of males being worker sons. In the two doubly mated colonies 62.5% and 96.7% of the male offspring originated from workers and both patrilines participated in male production. Inferring the mother genotypes from the male offspring, between four to eight workers participated in the production of males.

Conclusions

In this study we show that the workers clearly win the queen-worker conflict over male production in B. wilmattae, which sets them apart from the temperate bumblebee species studied so far. Workers clearly dominated male production in the singly as well the doubly mated colonies, with up to eight workers producing male offspring in a single colony. Moreover no monopolization of reproduction by single workers occurred.  相似文献

Summary Stingless bees usually have one, singly-mated queen. This can lead to a genetic conflict of interest between the queen and the non-laying workers over who should produce the males. In many stingless bee species workers have developed ovaries and can produce male-destined eggs. In this study we compile the available data on who produces the males in stingless bees. Worker reproduction is common but less frequent than expected from predictions built on relatedness-based preferences of non-laying workers. We tested whether the pattern in worker reproduction can be explained best by queen control, by an arms race between workers and their queen, by the costs of losing workers to reproductive competition, or by phylogenetic constraints. The data are consistent with the view that there is ongoing conflict over male production that is resolved differently depending on the specific dynamics of costs and benefits of worker reproduction. There was also a role for phylogeny; Melipona workers often reproduced while Plebeia and Australian stingless bee workers seldom or never did. The high worker reproduction in Melipona may reflect low costs, because many of the replaced queen-laid eggs would become excess queens.Received 17 April 2003; revised 2 September 2003; accepted 5 September 2003.  相似文献

The efficiency of social groups is generally optimized by a division of labour, achieved through behavioural or morphological diversity of members. In social insects, colonies may increase the morphological diversity of workers by recruiting standing genetic variance for size and shape via multiply mated queens (polyandry) or multiple‐breeding queens (polygyny). However, greater worker diversity in multi‐lineage species may also have evolved due to mutual worker policing if there is worker reproduction. Such policing reduces the pressure on workers to maintain reproductive morphologies, allowing the evolution of greater developmental plasticity and the maintenance of more genetic variance for worker size and shape in populations. Pheidole ants vary greatly in the diversity of worker castes. Also, their workers lack ovaries and are thus invariably sterile regardless of the queen mating frequency and numbers of queens per colony. This allowed us to perform an across‐species study examining the genetic effects of recruiting more patrilines on the developmental diversity of workers in the absence of confounding effects from worker policing. Using highly variable microsatellite markers, we found that the effective mating frequency of the soldier‐polymorphic P. rhea (avg. meN = 2.65) was significantly higher than that of the dimorphic P. spadonia (avg. meN = 1.06), despite a significant paternity skew in P. rhea (avg. B = 0.10). Our findings support the idea that mating strategies of queens may co‐evolve with selection to increase the diversity of workers. We also detected patriline bias in the production of different worker sizes, which provides direct evidence for a genetic component to worker polymorphism.  相似文献

1. There is growing evidence that sexually mature but morphologically juvenile males of Atlantic salmon (precocious or mature male parr) actively participate in reproduction and, therefore, in the genetic composition of the populations of this species. The impact of mature male parr on the effective population size (Ne) of such populations has been previously studied under experimental settings, but no studies have been performed directly on natural populations. 2. Continuous monitoring and sampling of all sea returns is possible in the Lérez River (northwest of Spain). From demographic data on variances of reproductive success and genetic data from six microsatellite marker loci we carried out parentage assignment and assessed the impact of male parr on demographic and genetic estimates of Ne in two consecutive years. 3. Our results reveal that: (i) approximately 60% of the total sire paternity is attributable to mature parr; (ii) mature parr decrease the variance of reproductive success of males by a threefold factor and increase the effective population size of males by a 10‐fold factor; (iii) however, they do not substantially affect the variance of reproductive success and the effective size of females; (iv) mature parr increase two‐to threefold the overall effective size of the population but the ratio Ne/N, where N is the population size including or not mature parr in each case, is not affected.  相似文献

Kin selection theory predicts that honeybee (Apis mellifera) workers should largely refrain from producing their own offspring, as the workers collectively have higher inclusive fitness if they rear the sons of their mother, the queen. Studies that have quantified levels of ovary activation and reproduction among workers have largely supported this prediction. We sampled pre‐emergent male pupae and adult workers from seven colonies at regular intervals throughout the reproductive part of the season. We show that the overall contribution of workers to male (drone) production is 4.2%, nearly 40 times higher than is generally reported, and is highest during reproductive swarming, when an average of 6.2% of the males genotyped are worker‐produced. Similarly, workers in our samples were 100 times more likely to have active ovaries than previously assumed. Worker reproduction is seasonally influenced and peaks when colonies are rearing new queens. Not all worker subfamilies contribute equally to reproduction. Instead, certain subfamilies are massively over‐represented in drone brood. By laying eggs within the period in which many colonies produce virgin queens, these rare worker subfamilies increase their direct fitness via their well‐timed sons.  相似文献

Levels of random genetic drift are influenced by demographic factors, such as mating system, sex ratio and age structure. The effective population size (Ne) is a useful measure for quantifying genetic drift. Evaluating relative contributions of different demographic factors to Ne is therefore important to identify what makes a population vulnerable to loss of genetic variation. Until recently, models for estimating Ne have required many simplifying assumptions, making them unsuitable for this task. Here, using data from a small, harvested moose population, we demonstrate the use of a stochastic demographic framework allowing for fluctuations in both population size and age distribution to estimate and decompose the total demographic variance and hence the ratio of effective to total population size (Ne/N) into components originating from sex, age, survival and reproduction. We not only show which components contribute most to Ne/N currently, but also which components have the greatest potential for changing Ne/N. In this relatively long‐lived polygynous system we show that Ne/N is most sensitive to the demographic variance of older males, and that both reproductive autocorrelations (i.e., a tendency for the same individuals to be successful several years in a row) and covariance between survival and reproduction contribute to decreasing Ne/N (increasing genetic drift). These conditions are common in nature and can be caused by common hunting strategies. Thus, the framework presented here has great potential to increase our understanding of the demographic processes that contribute to genetic drift and viability of populations, and to inform management decisions.  相似文献

The hallmark of eusociality is the division of labour between reproductive (queen) and nonreproductive (worker) females. Yet in many eusocial insects, workers retain the ability to produce haploid male offspring from unfertilized eggs. The reproductive potential of workers has well‐documented consequences for the structure and function of insect colonies, but its implications at the population level are less often considered. We show that worker reproduction in honey bees can have an important role in maintaining genetic diversity at the sex locus in invasive populations. The honey bee sex locus is homozygous‐lethal, and, all else being equal, a higher allele number in the population lead to higher mean brood survival. In an invasive population of the honey bee Apis cerana in Australia, workers contribute significantly to male production: 38% of male‐producing colonies are queenless, and these contribute one‐third of all males at mating congregations. Using a model, we show that such male production by queenless workers will increase the number of sex alleles retained in nascent invasive populations following founder events, relative to a scenario in which only queens reproduce. We conclude that by rescuing sex locus diversity that would otherwise be lost, workers' sons help honey bee populations to minimize the negative effects of inbreeding after founder events and so contribute to their success as invaders.  相似文献

Eusociality and male haploidy of bumblebees (Bombus spp.) enhance the deleterious effects of population decline and aggravate the degeneration of population fitness compared to solitary and diploid species. The highly dispersive male sex may be the prime driver to connect otherwise isolated populations. We therefore studied the temporal and spatial structure of the male population of Bombus terrestris (Linnaeus 1758) and Bombus lapidarius (Linnaeus 1758) using microsatellite DNA markers. We found that the majority of the males in a 1000 m2 sampling area originated from colonies located outside of the workers foraging range, which was consistent with the genetic distances among colonies. The analyses of temporal population sub-structure based on both colony detection rate over time and the clustering software STRUCTURE consistently suggested one large and temporally unstructured male population. Our results indicate an extended male flight distance for both species. Though the range of queen dispersal remains to be studied, the effective size (N e) of bumblebees is increased by extended male mating flight ranges (A m ) exceeding worker foraging distance by factor 1.66 (A m  = 69.75 km2) and 1.74 (A m  = 13.41 km2), B. terrestris and B. lapidarius, respectively. Thus this behaviour may counteract genetic deprivation and its effects. All populations were genetically highly diverse and showed no signs of inbreeding. We discuss the implications of our findings in context of bumblebee population dynamics and conservation. We also highlight the effects and benefits of sampling both workers and males for population genetic studies.  相似文献

Effective population size (N e) quantifies the effects of micro-evolutionary processes and the rate of loss of genetic diversity in a population. Several demographic and mating parameters reduce N e. Theoretical studies elucidate the impacts of various demographic and mating system parameters on N e, while empirical studies illustrate realized N e for species with differing life histories and mating systems. However, effect of intra-specific variation in mating system on effective size remains largely unexplored. In this paper we investigated the effect of promiscuous and polygynous mating on N e in two wild populations of the short-nosed fruit bat, Cynopterus sphinx. N e/N (ratio of effective population size to census size) was lower than unity in both populations, and much lower for the polygynous population compared to promiscuous population. Elasticity analyses reveal that N e/N was sensitive to deviations in the sex ratio. Variance in female reproductive success had a higher impact on N e compared to variance in male reproductive success in the promiscuous population. However, for the polygynous population, impact of variance in male reproductive success on N e was higher than that of variance in female reproductive success. Our results suggest that depending on mating system, different populations of the same species could have alternate evolutionary trajectories. The rate of loss of genetic diversity would be lower for the promiscuous population compared to the polygynous population. Our study is the first to highlight which parameters would most significantly impact population specific N e under different mating systems.  相似文献

Many salmonid fish populations have anadromous (i.e. migratory) and nonanadromous individuals co‐existing in sympatry. The nonanadromous individuals, frequently males, mature at a much smaller size in freshwater without undergoing marine migrations and often successfully fertilize many eggs laid by anadromous females. Because these small males do not recruit to fisheries, they are often not regarded in high esteem by fishers. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, Johnstone et al. ( 2013 ) demonstrate that by substantially contributing to reproduction, such males help maintain genetic diversity in a declining population of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Their results show that estimates of effective population size (Ne), obtained by counting the number of anadromous adults returning from sea and correcting for unequal sex ratios, are lower than estimates generated from genetic markers. Many mechanisms are expected to reduce Ne below the adult census population size (N); the opposite pattern of NN observed by Johnstone et al. ( 2013 ) is difficult to explain unless the reproductive effort of nonanadromous males is accounted for. The results have important implications for the conservation of small populations and highlight the challenges of relating Ne to N in organisms with complex life histories.  相似文献

Summary. In a few, scattered species of social Hymenoptera, unmated workers are capable of producing female offspring from unfertilized eggs through thelytokous parthenogenesis. Regular thelytoky has previously been demonstrated in a number of populations of the neotropical ant Platythyrea punctata. Nevertheless, the finding of males and inseminated queens and workers suggested the sporadic occurrence of sex. In this study we investigated the genetic structure of colonies from Puerto Rico and Costa Rica in order to detect traces of occasional sexual reproduction. Most Puerto Rican colonies had a clonal structure with all nestmates sharing the same multilocus genotype, indicating that thelytoky is the predominant mode of reproduction. Genetic variability was detected in six of 18 colonies and might have arisen from adoption of alien workers in one colony and from the adoption of alien workers, recombination during parthenogenesis, or sexual reproduction in the other colonies. The reproductive of one of these latter colonies was found to be an inseminated worker (gamergate), and the genotypes of its nestmates definitively suggested recombination and sexual reproduction. Three gamergates were found in a single colony collected in Costa Rica, and all produced offspring from fertilized eggs, while uninseminated workers were apparently incapable of reproducing by thelytoky.Received 10 August 2004; revised 20 October 2004; accepted 3 November 2004.  相似文献

Workers of the Florida harvester ant (Pogonomyrmex badius), the only North American Pogonomyrmex with a polymorphic worker caste, produce males when colonies are orphaned. In this study,we assessed the reproductive potential of workers of each caste group, minors and majors, in the presence and absence of the queen, and tested whether males produced in natural queen-right colonies are derived from workers. Worker size was positively correlated with ovariole number such that major workers had approximately double the number of ovarioles as minor workers. The number of vitellogenic oocytes, a measure of reproductive potential, was greater in major compared to minor workers and increased in both worker castes when queens were removed. Major workers have greater reproductive potential than minors although they represent a minority within the colony (~5% of workers are majors). Worker produced eggs were visible in colonies 28 – 35 days after queen removal. This time lag, from queen removal to egg production, is similar to other ants and bees. Though workers are capable of producing viable eggs, we found no evidence that they do so in queen-right colonies, suggesting that worker reproduction is controlled via some social mechanism (self restraint, policing, or inhibition). This result supports predictions of kin selection theory – that due to multiple mating by the queen workers are more related to queen-produced males than most worker-produced males and should thus favor reproduction by the queen and inhibit reproduction by other workers. Summary We studied the nesting and social biology of two aggregations of the obligately eusocial halictine bee Lasioglossum malachurum at Agios Nikolaos Monemvasias (ANM) in southern Greece. Observations and nest excavations carried out from May to June 2000, revealed social and demographic variation between aggregations and years at ANM, as well as notable differences between these and other European populations. In southern Greece, the colony cycle includes multiple broods: the first two broods comprise only workers, whereas the third brood comprises workers, males, and gynes. Although pleometrosis is unknown in other populations, in the ANM region, as many as 10% of nests have more than one foundress. Newly emerged workers and gynes exhibit non-overlapping size distributions, but a few queens are worker-sized, indicating that workers occasionally overwinter and become foundresses. Although the vast majority of workers are unmated and most exhibit no ovarian development, an increase in worker ovarian development at the time of male production suggests that many males may develop from worker-laid eggs. Worker reproduction seems to be inhibited by the presence of queens, and annual variation in queen mortality may underlie annual variation in worker ovarian development. Across Europe, the major demographic and social differences among L. malachurum populations are in the number of worker broods and the extent of worker ovarian development. This contrasts with the results of a principal components analysis of social traits among 15 social L. (Evylaeus) populations, which shows that interspecific social variation is defined by the proportion of males in the early brood, the proportion of workers mated, queen-worker size dimorphism, gyne overwintering locale, and the proportion of workers with developed ovaries.Received 17 June 2002; revised 16 January 2002; accepted 27 January 2003.  相似文献

Density dependence in vital rates is a key feature affecting temporal fluctuations of natural populations. This has important implications for the rate of random genetic drift. Mating systems also greatly affect effective population sizes, but knowledge of how mating system and density regulation interact to affect random genetic drift is poor. Using theoretical models and simulations, we compare Ne in short‐lived, density‐dependent animal populations with different mating systems. We study the impact of a fluctuating, density‐dependent sex ratio and consider both a stable and a fluctuating environment. We find a negative relationship between annual Ne/N and adult population size N due to density dependence, suggesting that loss of genetic variation is reduced at small densities. The magnitude of this decrease was affected by mating system and life history. A male‐biased, density‐dependent sex ratio reduces the rate of genetic drift compared to an equal, density‐independent sex ratio, but a stochastic change towards male bias reduces the Ne/N ratio. Environmental stochasticity amplifies temporal fluctuations in population size and is thus vital to consider in estimation of effective population sizes over longer time periods. Our results on the reduced loss of genetic variation at small densities, particularly in polygamous populations, indicate that density regulation may facilitate adaptive evolution at small population sizes.  相似文献

In eusocial Hymenoptera, worker reproduction is affected by various factors, especially the genetic structure of the colony. Kinship theory predicts that hymenopteran workers prefer to produce sons rather than brothers when a single, once-mated queen is in a colony, while such worker reproduction is expected to be mutually inhibited by other workers under multiple mating of the queen. To test these predictions we observed the behaviour of the myrmicine ant Aphaenogaster smythiesi japonica. Observation of the social structure of 60 queenright colonies indicated monogyny and microsatellite DNA analysis of 14 colonies showed monandry. Under laboratory conditions, workers with functional ovaries laid only trophic eggs in the presence of the queen and produced viable eggs in her absence. In an experiment in which colonies split and reunited, workers that had well-developed ovarioles with viable oocytes were frequently attacked by other workers from the queenright groups. The number of oocytes in a worker's ovarioles was positively correlated with the frequency of being attacked. The results show that a worker's production of males in this species is potentially inhibited by worker policing, contrary to the prediction that worker policing is not predominant in monogynous and monandrous societies. Worker honeybees (Apis mellifera) usually only lay eggs when their colony is queenless. However, an extremely rare ''anarchistic'' phenotype occurs, in which workers develop functional ovaries and lay large numbers of haploid eggs which develop into adult drones despite the presence of the queen. Studies of such colonies can give important insights into the mechanisms by which worker sterility is maintained in normal colonies. Here we report on the results of a breeding programme which enhanced the frequency of the anarchistic phenotype. Colonies derived from queens inseminated only by worker-laid males showed up to 9% of workers with highly developed ovaries. In these colonies a large proportion of males arose from worker-laid eggs. Colonies headed by queens inseminated with 50% worker-laid drones and 50% queen-laid drones showed variable phenotypes. In most such colonies there was no worker reproduction. In some, many workers had highly developed ovaries, but no worker-laid eggs were reared. In one colony, many worker-laid eggs were reared to maturity. The results suggest that the anarchy phenotype results from a complex interaction of queen genotype, the worker genotype of subfamilies that successfully reproduce and of those that do not, and the external environment.  相似文献

Differentiation of neotenics is easily induced by orphaning the worker termites of Reticulitermes speratus (Kolbe). Although it has previously been reported that the sex ratio of neotenics is female-biased, the background of this phenomenon and the gonad developmental process of workers in artificially orphaned colonies are unknown. Although both male and female conspicuous neotenics can emerge as a response to the orphaning of the colony, we observed that majority of the reproductive males that are formed do not molt into the neotenic morph and are therefore inconspicuous in the population. Participation of the inconspicuous reproductive males in sexual reproduction was confirmed by genetic analysis. Slight pigmentation of the abdominal sternites is the only characteristic of the inconspicuous reproductive males that enables them to be distinguished from normal male workers. The presence of the female ergatoid (one type of female neotenic) did not induce the production of inconspicuous reproductive males during the 12-week experiment time.  相似文献
