Bacteriophages are bacterial viruses and have been used for almost a century as antimicrobial agents. In the West, their use diminished when chemical antibiotics were introduced, but they remain a common therapeutic approach in parts of eastern Europe. Increasing antibiotic resistance in bacteria has driven the demand for novel therapies to control infections and led to the replacement of antibiotics in animal husbandry. Alongside this, increased pressure to improve food safety has created a need for faster detection of pathogenic bacteria. Hence, there has been a resurgence of interest in bacteriophage applications, and this has encouraged the emergence of a large number of biotech companies hoping to commercialize their use. Research in Europe and the United States has increased steadily, leading to the development of a range of applications for bacteriophage agents for the healthcare, veterinary and agricultural sectors. This article will attempt to answer the question of whether bacteriophages are now delivering on their potential. 相似文献

Biodiversity now is considered a highly valuable material, providing manifold services of high importance for the well-being
of humankind. However, biodiversity globally is rapidly diminishing and, despite efforts to halt the loss of biodiversity,
positive effects are hardly visible. Biodiversity monitoring, the close observation of our natural environment, is imperative
to determine the state and trend of organism populations and their habitats. Therefore, it has become a centrepiece of nature
conservation across the globe. However, monitoring activities are not centrally coordinated, differ vastly in their monitoring
targets, sampling designs, and human resource needs. This special issue on biodiversity and monitoring presents an overview
of the current state of biodiversity monitoring in Europe, gives suggestions for the integration of monitoring data to improve
the geographical and taxonomic coverage, deals with general methodological aspects of monitoring biodiversity across different
geographic scales, the involvement of the public in monitoring activities, and provides some monitoring case studies. The
special issue is aimed to provide recommendations and suggestions for more standardized monitoring approaches, and is mainly
based on the findings of the EU-project EuMon. 相似文献

Aside from a few serendipitous discoveries, small proteins of less than 50 amino acids in bacteria and 100 amino acids in eukaryotes were largely ignored due to challenges in their genetic and biochemical detection. However, with the ever-increasing availability of completed genome sequences and deep sequencing, which allows analysis of genome-wide ribosome occupancy, hundreds of small proteins are now being identified. This brings to the forefront the challenges and opportunities associated with the characterization of these proteins.See research article: http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2164/15/946. 相似文献

Molecular biologists have long dreamed of switching genes on and off at will in any part of the body during embryonic development. Their dream is now coming true thanks to the transparency of the embryonic body of the zebrafish ( Danio rerio), which has made gene manipulation by photoillumination possible. 相似文献
