Spatial and daily variation in photosynthetic water-use efficiency was examined in leaves of Betula pendula Roth with respect to distribution of hydraulic conductance within the crown, morphological properties of stomata, and water availability. Intrinsic water-use efficiency (A n/g s) was determined from gas-exchange measurements performed both in situ in a natural forest stand and on detached shoots under laboratory conditions. In intact foliage, sun leaves demonstrated significantly higher (P < 0.001) A n/g s than shade leaves, as photosynthesis in the lower canopy was chronically limited by low light availability. However, this difference reversed in the mid-day period under sufficient irradiance (I > 800 μmol m−2 s−1): A n/g s averaged 28.8 and 24.0 μmol mol−1 (P < 0.01) for shade and sun leaves, respectively. This last finding coincided with the data obtained in laboratory conditions: under equivalent leaf water supply and light, A n/g s in shade foliage was greater (P < 0.001) than in sun foliage across a wide range of irradiance. Thus, shade foliage of B. pendula is characterized by inherently higher A n/g s than sun foliage, associated with more conservative stomatal behavior, and lower soil-to-leaf (K T) and leaf hydraulic conductances. Under unlimited light conditions, a within-crown trade-off between A n/g s and K T becomes apparent. Differences in stomatal conductance between the detached shoots from sunlit and shaded canopy layers were largely attributable to the variation in stomatal morphology; significant relationships were established with characteristics combining stomatal size and density (relative stomatal surface, stomatal pore area index). Stomatal morphology is very likely involved in long-term adjustment of photosynthetic WUE.  相似文献

Accurate estimation of terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP) remains a challenge despite its importance in the global carbon cycle. Chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) has been recently adopted to understand photosynthesis and its response to the environment, particularly with remote sensing data. However, it remains unclear how ChlF and photosynthesis are linked at different spatial scales across the growing season. We examined seasonal relationships between ChlF and photosynthesis at the leaf, canopy, and ecosystem scales and explored how leaf‐level ChlF was linked with canopy‐scale solar‐induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) in a temperate deciduous forest at Harvard Forest, Massachusetts, USA. Our results show that ChlF captured the seasonal variations of photosynthesis with significant linear relationships between ChlF and photosynthesis across the growing season over different spatial scales (R= 0.73, 0.77, and 0.86 at leaf, canopy, and satellite scales, respectively; P < 0.0001). We developed a model to estimate GPP from the tower‐based measurement of SIF and leaf‐level ChlF parameters. The estimation of GPP from this model agreed well with flux tower observations of GPP (R= 0.68; P < 0.0001), demonstrating the potential of SIF for modeling GPP. At the leaf scale, we found that leaf Fq/Fm, the fraction of absorbed photons that are used for photochemistry for a light‐adapted measurement from a pulse amplitude modulation fluorometer, was the best leaf fluorescence parameter to correlate with canopy SIF yield (SIF/APAR, R= 0.79; P < 0.0001). We also found that canopy SIF and SIF‐derived GPP (GPPSIF) were strongly correlated to leaf‐level biochemistry and canopy structure, including chlorophyll content (R= 0.65 for canopy GPPSIF and chlorophyll content; P < 0.0001), leaf area index (LAI) (R= 0.35 for canopy GPPSIF and LAI; P < 0.0001), and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) (R= 0.36 for canopy GPPSIF and NDVI; P < 0.0001). Our results suggest that ChlF can be a powerful tool to track photosynthetic rates at leaf, canopy, and ecosystem scales.  相似文献

In recent years, many studies have focused on the limiting role of mesophyll conductance (gm) to photosynthesis (An) under water stress, but no studies have examined the effect of drought on gm through the forest canopy. We investigated limitations to An on leaves at different heights in a mixed adult stand of sessile oak (Quercus petraea) and beech (Fagus sylvatica) trees during a moderately dry summer. Moderate drought decreased An of top and lowest beech canopy leaves much more than in leaves located in the mid canopy; whereas in oak, An of the lower canopy was decreased more than in sunlit leaves. The decrease of An was probably not due to leaf‐level biochemistry given that VCmax was generally unaffected by drought. The reduction in An was instead associated with reduction in stomatal and mesophyll conductances. Drought‐induced increases in stomatal limitations were largest in leaves from the top canopy, whereas drought‐induced increases in mesophyll limitations were largest in leaves from the lowest canopy. Sensitivity analysis highlighted the need to decompose the canopy into different leaf layers and to incorporate the limitation imposed by gm when assessing the impact of drought on the gas exchange of tree canopies.  相似文献

The success of the desert shrub Larrea tridentata (creosotebush) has been largely attributed to temperature acclimation and stomatal control of photosynthesis (A) under drought stress. However, there is a paucity of field data on these relationships. To address this void, we conducted a joint field and modelling study that encompassed a diverse set of environmental conditions. At a Larrea‐dominated site in southern New Mexico we manipulated soil moisture during the growing season over a 2‐year period and measured plant pre‐dawn water potential (Ψpd), stomatal conductance (g) and A of individual shrubs. We used these data to develop a semi‐mechanistic photosynthesis model (A–Season) that explicitly couples internal CO2 (Ci) and g. Vapour pressure deficit (VPD) and Ψpd affect instantaneous g in a manner that is consistent with a biophysical model of stomatal regulation of leaf water potential. Ci is modelled as a function of g, derived from a simplification of a typical ACi curve. After incorporating the effects of growing temperature on stomatal behaviour, the model was able to capture the large diurnal fluctuations in A, g and Ci and the observed hysteresis in g versus Ci dynamics. Our field data and application of the A–Season model suggest that dogma attributed to Larrea's success is supported with regard to stomatal responses to VPD and Ψpd, but not for mechanisms of temperature acclimation and CO2 demand.  相似文献

A comparative study on stomatal control under water deficit was conducted on grapevines of the cultivars Grenache, of Mediterranean origin, and Syrah of mesic origin, grown near Montpellier, France and Geisenheim, Germany. Syrah maintained similar maximum stomatal conductance (gmax) and maximum leaf photosynthesis (Amax) values than Grenache at lower predawn leaf water potentials, Ψleaf, throughout the season. The Ψleaf of Syrah decreased strongly during the day and was lower in stressed than in watered plants, showing anisohydric stomatal behaviour. In contrast, Grenache showed isohydric stomatal behaviour in which Ψleaf did not drop significantly below the minimum Ψleaf of watered plants. When g was plotted versus leaf specific hydraulic conductance, Kl, incorporating leaf transpiration rate and whole‐plant water potential gradients, previous differences between varieties disappeared both on a seasonal and diurnal scale. This suggested that isohydric and anisohydric behaviour could be regulated by hydraulic conductance. Pressure‐flow measurements on excised organs from plants not previously stressed revealed that Grenache had a two‐ to three‐fold larger hydraulic conductance per unit path length (Kh) and a four‐ to six‐fold larger leaf area specific conductivity (LSC) in leaf petioles than Syrah. Differences between internodes were only apparent for LSC and were much smaller. Cavitation detected as ultrasound acoustic emissions on air‐dried shoots showed higher rates for Grenache than Syrah during the early phases of the dry‐down. It is hypothesized that the differences in water‐conducting capacity of stems and especially petioles may be at the origin of the near‐isohydric and anisohydric behaviour of g.  相似文献

Light gradients within tree canopies play a major role in the distribution of plant resources that define the photosynthetic capacity of sun and shade leaves. However, the biochemical and diffusional constraints on gas exchange in sun and shade leaves in response to light remain poorly quantified, but critical for predicting canopy carbon and water exchange. To investigate the CO2 diffusion pathway of sun and shade leaves, leaf gas exchange was coupled with concurrent measurements of carbon isotope discrimination to measure net leaf photosynthesis (An), stomatal conductance (gs) and mesophyll conductance (gm) in Eucalyptus tereticornis trees grown in climate controlled whole‐tree chambers. Compared to sun leaves, shade leaves had lower An, gm, leaf nitrogen and photosynthetic capacity (Amax) but gs was similar. When light intensity was temporarily increased for shade leaves to match that of sun leaves, both gs and gm increased, and An increased to values greater than sun leaves. We show that dynamic physiological responses of shade leaves to altered light environments have implications for up‐scaling leaf level measurements and predicting whole canopy carbon gain. Despite exhibiting reduced photosynthetic capacity, the rapid up‐regulation of gm with increased light enables shade leaves to respond quickly to sunflecks.  相似文献

Most C3 plant species have partially open stomata during the night especially in the 3–5 h before dawn. This pre‐dawn stomatal opening has been hypothesized to enhance early‐morning photosynthesis (A) by reducing diffusion limitations to CO2 at dawn. We tested this hypothesis in cultivated Helianthus annuus using whole‐shoot gas exchange, leaf level gas exchange and modelling approaches. One hour pre‐dawn low‐humidity treatments were used to reduce pre‐dawn stomatal conductance (g). At the whole‐shoot level, a difference of pre‐dawn g (0.40 versus 0.17 mol m?2 s?1) did not significantly affect A during the first hour after dawn. Shorter term effects were investigated with leaf level gas exchange measurements and a difference of pre‐dawn g (0.10 versus 0.04 mol m?2 s?1) affected g and A for only 5 min after dawn. The potential effects of a wider range of stomatal apertures were explored with an empirical model of the relationship between A and intercellular CO2 concentration during the half‐hour after dawn. Modelling results demonstrated that even extremely low pre‐dawn stomatal conductance values have only a minimal effect on early‐morning A for a few minutes after dawn. Thus, we found no evidence that pre‐dawn stomatal opening enhances A.  相似文献

Air temperatures in the arid western United States are predicted to increase over the next century. These increases will likely impact the distribution of plant species, particularly dioecious species that show a spatial segregation of the sexes across broad resource gradients. On the basis of spatial segregation patterns, we hypothesized that temperature increases will have a greater negative impact on female plants compared with co‐occurring male plants of dioecious species. This hypothesis was tested by examining the whole‐plant carbon and water relations of 10‐year‐old female (= 18) and male (= 13) Acer negundo Sarg. trees grown in a common garden in Salt Lake City, UT. The trees were established from cuttings collected where the growing season temperature averaged about 6.5 °C cooler than at the common garden. During May and June, stem sap flux (Js) was similar between genders, but averaged 25% higher in males during the warmer months of July and August. Daytime canopy stomatal conductance (gs) per unit leaf area was 12% higher in females in May : June, but was 11% higher in males in July : August. We combined measurements of sap flux–scaled transpiration with measurements of tree allometry and δ13C of leaf soluble sugars to estimate whole‐tree carbon assimilation (Atree) and water use efficiency (WUE) (Atree : Etree). Atree was similar between genders until late August when Atree was 32% higher in male trees. Atree : Etree was on average 7% higher in females than in males during the growing season. Patterns of Js, gs, Atree and Atree : Etree in the present study were in contrast to those previously reported for A. negundo genders under native growing season temperatures. Results suggest that the spatial segregation of the sexes could shift under global warming such that female plants lose their dominance in high‐resource habitats, and males increase their dominance in relatively lower‐resource habitats.  相似文献

Photosynthesis of individual field-grown cotton leaves during ontogeny   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Photosynthetic characteristics of field-grown cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) leaves were determined at several insertion levels within the canopy during the growing season. Single-leaf measurements of net photosynthesis (Pn), stomatal conductance to CO2 (gs·CO2), substomatal CO2, leaf area expansion, leaf nitrogen, and light intensity (PPFD) were recorded for undisturbed leaves within the crop canopy at 3–4 day intervals during the development of all leaves at main-stem nodes 8, 10, and 12. Patterns of Pn during leaf ontogeny exhibited three distinct phases; a rapid increase to maximum at 16–20 days after leaf unfolding, a relatively short plateau, and a period of linear decline to negligible Pn at 60–65 days. Analysis of the parameters which contributed to the rise and fall pattern of Pn with leaf age indicated the primary involvement of leaf area expansion, leaf nitrogen, PPFD, and gs·CO2 in this process. The response of Pn and gs·CO2 to incident PPFD conditions during canopy development was highly age dependent. For leaves less than 16 days old, the patterns of Pn and gs·CO2 were largely controlled by non-PPFD factors, while for older leaves Pn and gs·CO2 were more closely coupled to PPFD-mediated processes. Maximum values of Pn were not significantly different for any of the leaves monitored in this study, however, those leaves at main-stem node 8 did possess a significantly diminished photosynthetic capacity with age compared to upper canopy leaves. This accelerated decline in Pn could not be explained by age-related variations in gs·CO2 since all leaves showed similar changes in gs·CO2 with leaf age.Abbreviations gs·CO2 stomatal conductance to CO2 - Pn net photosynthesis - PPFD photosynthetic photon flux density  相似文献

It has been suggested that desert vegetation will show the strongest response to rising atmospheric carbon dioxide due to strong water limitations in these systems that may be ameliorated by both photosynthetic enhancements and reductions in stomatal conductance. Here, we report the long‐term effect of 55 Pa atmospheric CO2 on photosynthesis and stomatal conductance for three Mojave Desert shrubs of differing leaf phenology (Ambrosia dumosa—drought‐deciduous, Krameria erecta—winter‐deciduous, Larrea tridentata—evergreen). The shrubs were growing in an undisturbed ecosystem fumigated using FACE technology and were measured over a four‐year period that included both above and below‐average precipitation. Daily integrated photosynthesis (Aday) was significantly enhanced by elevated CO2 for all three species, although Krameria erecta showed the greatest enhancements (63% vs. 32% for the other species) enhancements were constant throughout the entire measurement period. Only one species, Larrea tridentata, decreased stomatal conductance by 25–50% in response to elevated CO2, and then only at the onset of the summer dry season and following late summer convective precipitation. Similarly, reductions in the maximum carboxylation rate of Rubisco were limited to Larrea during spring. These results suggest that the elevated CO2 response of desert vegetation is a function of complex interactions between species functional types and prevailing environmental conditions. Elevated CO2 did not extend the active growing season into the summer dry season because of overall negligible stomatal conductance responses that did not result in significant water conservation. Overall, we expect the greatest response of desert vegetation during years with above‐average precipitation when the active growing season is not limited to ~ 2 months and, consequently, the effects of increased photosynthesis can accumulate over a biologically significant time period.  相似文献

Rising atmospheric concentrations of CO2 (Ca) can reduce stomatal conductance and transpiration rate in trees, but the magnitude of this effect varies considerably among experiments. The theory of optimal stomatal behaviour predicts that the ratio of photosynthesis to transpiration (instantaneous transpiration efficiency, ITE) should increase in proportion to Ca. We hypothesized that plants regulate stomatal conductance optimally in response to rising Ca. We tested this hypothesis with data from young Eucalyptus saligna Sm. trees grown in 12 climate‐controlled whole‐tree chambers for 2 years at ambient and elevated Ca. Elevated Ca was ambient + 240 ppm, 60% higher than ambient Ca. Leaf‐scale gas exchange was measured throughout the second year of the study and leaf‐scale ITE increased by 60% under elevated Ca, as predicted. Values of leaf‐scale ITE depended strongly on vapour pressure deficit (D) in both CO2 treatments. Whole‐canopy CO2 and H2O fluxes were also monitored continuously for each chamber throughout the second year. There were small differences in D between Ca treatments, which had important effects on values of canopy‐scale ITE. However, when Ca treatments were compared at the same D, canopy‐scale ITE was consistently increased by 60%, again as predicted. Importantly, leaf and canopy‐scale ITE were not significantly different, indicating that ITE was not scale‐dependent. Observed changes in transpiration rate could be explained on the basis that ITE increased in proportion to Ca. The effect of elevated Ca on photosynthesis increased with rising D. At high D, Ca had a large effect on photosynthesis and a small effect on transpiration rate. At low D, in contrast, there was a small effect of Ca on photosynthesis, but a much larger effect on transpiration rate. If shown to be a general response, the proportionality of ITE with Ca will allow us to predict the effects of Ca on transpiration rate.  相似文献

The study presents a theoretical basis of a stomatal behavior-based coupled model for estimating photosynthesis, A, and transpiration, E. Outputs of the model were tested against data observed in a maize (Zea mays L.) field. The model was developed by introducing the internal conductance, g ic, to CO2 assimilation, and the general equation of stomatal conductance, g sw, to H2O diffusion, into models of CO2 and H2O diffusion through the stomata of plant leaves. The coupled model is easier for practical use since the model only includes environmental variables, such as ambient CO2 concentration, leaf temperature, humidity and photosynthetic photon flux received at the leaves within the canopy. Moreover, concept of g ic, and factors controlling A and E were discussed, and applicability of the model was examined with the data collected in the maize field.  相似文献

Shoots of the tropical latex-producing tree Hevea brasiliensis (rubber tree) grow according to a periodic pattern, producing four to five whorls of leaves per year. All leaves in the same whorl were considered to be in the same leaf-age class, in order to assess the evolution of photosynthesis with leaf age in three clones of rubber trees, in a plantation in eastern Thailand. Light-saturated CO2 assimilation rate (A max) decreased more with leaf age than did photosynthetic capacity (maximal rate of carboxylation, V cmax , and maximum rate of electron transport, J max), which was estimated by fitting a biochemical photosynthesis model to the CO2-response curves. Nitrogen-use efficiency (A max/Na, Na is nitrogen content per leaf area) decreased also with leaf age, whereas J max and V cmax did not correlate with N a. Although measurements were performed during the rainy season, the leaf gas exchange parameter that showed the best correlation with A max was stomatal conductance (g s). An asymptotic function was fitted to the A max-g s relationship, with R 2 = 0.85. A max, V cmax, J max and g s varied more among different whorls in the same clone than among different clones in the same whorl. We concluded that leaf whorl was an appropriate parameter to characterize leaves for the purpose of modelling canopy photosynthesis in field-grown rubber trees, and that stomatal conductance was the most important variable explaining changes in A max with leaf age in rubber trees.  相似文献

A lower than theoretically expected increase in leaf photosynthesis with long‐term elevation of carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]) is often attributed to limitations in the capacity of the plant to utilize the additional photosynthate, possibly resulting from restrictions in rooting volume, nitrogen supply or genetic constraints. Field‐grown, nitrogen‐fixing soybean with indeterminate flowering might therefore be expected to escape these limitations. Soybean was grown from emergence to grain maturity in ambient air (372 µmol mol?1[CO2]) and in air enriched with CO2 (552 µmol mol?1[CO2]) using Free‐Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) technology. The diurnal courses of leaf CO2 uptake (A) and stomatal conductance (gs) for upper canopy leaves were followed throughout development from the appearance of the first true leaf to the completion of seed filling. Across the growing season the daily integrals of leaf photosynthetic CO2 uptake (A′) increased by 24.6% in elevated [CO2] and the average mid‐day gs decreased by 21.9%. The increase in A′ was about half the 44.5% theoretical maximum increase calculated from Rubisco kinetics. There was no evidence that the stimulation of A was affected by time of day, as expected if elevated [CO2] led to a large accumulation of leaf carbohydrates towards the end of the photoperiod. In general, the proportion of assimilated carbon that accumulated in the leaf as non‐structural carbohydrate over the photoperiod was small (< 10%) and independent of [CO2] treatment. By contrast to A′, daily integrals of PSII electron transport measured by modulated chlorophyll fluorescence were not significantly increased by elevated [CO2]. This indicates that A at elevated [CO2] in these field conditions was predominantly ribulose‐1,5‐bisphosphate (RubP) limited rather than Rubisco limited. There was no evidence of any loss of stimulation toward the end of the growing season; the largest stimulation of A′ occurred during late seed filling. The stimulation of photosynthesis was, however, transiently lost for a brief period just before seed fill. At this point, daytime accumulation of foliar carbohydrates was maximal, and the hexose:sucrose ratio in plants grown at elevated [CO2] was significantly larger than that in plants grown at current [CO2]. The results show that even for a crop lacking the constraints that have been considered to limit the responses of C3 plants to rising [CO2] in the long term, the actual increase in A over the growing season is considerably less than the increase predicted from theory.  相似文献

We assessed the daily time‐courses of CO2 assimilation rate (A), leaf transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance for water vapour (gs), leaf water potential ( Ψ w) and tree transpiration in a wet and a dry season for three late‐stage canopy rainforest tree species in French Guiana differing in leaf carbon isotope composition ( δ 13C). The lower sunlit leaf δ 13C values found in Virola surinamensis ( ? 29·9‰) and in Diplotropis purpurea ( ? 30·9‰), two light‐demanding species, as compared to Eperua falcata ( ? 28·6‰), a shade‐semi‐tolerant species, were clearly associated with higher maximum gs values of sunlit leaves in the two former species. These two species were also characterized by a high sensitivity of gs, sap flow density (Ju) and canopy conductance (gc) to seasonal soil drought, allowing maintenance of high midday Ψ w values in the dry season. The data for Diplotropis provided an original picture of increasing midday Ψ w with increasing soil drought. In Virola, stomata were extremely sensitive to seasonal soil drought, leading to a dramatic decrease in leaf and tree transpiration in the dry season, whereas midday Ψ w remained close to ? 0·3 MPa. The mechanisms underlying such an extremely high sensitivity of stomata to soil drought remain unknown. In Eperua, gs of sunlit leaves was non‐responsive to seasonal drought, whereas Ju and gc were lower in the dry season. This suggests a higher stomatal sensitivity to seasonal drought in shaded leaves than in sunlit ones in this species.  相似文献

Crops show considerable capacity to adjust their photosynthetic characteristics to seasonal changes in temperature. However, how photosynthesis acclimates to changes in seasonal temperature under future climate conditions has not been revealed. We measured leaf photosynthesis (An) of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and rice (Oryza sativa L.) grown under four combinations of two levels of CO2 (ambient and enriched up to 500 µmol/mol) and two levels of canopy temperature (ambient and increased by 1.5–2.0°C) in temperature by free‐air CO2 enrichment (T‐FACE) systems. Parameters of a biochemical C3‐photosynthesis model and of a stomatal conductance (gs) model were estimated for the four conditions and for several crop stages. Some biochemical parameters related to electron transport and most gs parameters showed acclimation to seasonal growth temperature in both crops. The acclimation response did not differ much between wheat and rice, nor among the four treatments of the T‐FACE systems, when the difference in the seasonal growth temperature was accounted for. The relationships between biochemical parameters and leaf nitrogen content were consistent across leaf ranks, developmental stages, and treatment conditions. The acclimation had a strong impact on gs model parameters: when parameter values of a particular stage were used, the model failed to correctly estimate gs values of other stages. Further analysis using the coupled gs–biochemical photosynthesis model showed that ignoring the acclimation effect did not result in critical errors in estimating leaf photosynthesis under future climate, as long as parameter values were measured or derived from data obtained before flowering.  相似文献

Stomata regulate CO2 uptake for photosynthesis and water loss through transpiration. The approaches used to represent stomatal conductance (gs) in models vary. In particular, current understanding of drivers of the variation in a key parameter in those models, the slope parameter (i.e. a measure of intrinsic plant water‐use‐efficiency), is still limited, particularly in the tropics. Here we collected diurnal measurements of leaf gas exchange and leaf water potential (Ψleaf), and a suite of plant traits from the upper canopy of 15 tropical trees in two contrasting Panamanian forests throughout the dry season of the 2016 El Niño. The plant traits included wood density, leaf‐mass‐per‐area (LMA), leaf carboxylation capacity (Vc,max), leaf water content, the degree of isohydry, and predawn Ψleaf. We first investigated how the choice of four commonly used leaf‐level gs models with and without the inclusion of Ψleaf as an additional predictor variable influence the ability to predict gs, and then explored the abiotic (i.e. month, site‐month interaction) and biotic (i.e. tree‐species‐specific characteristics) drivers of slope parameter variation. Our results show that the inclusion of Ψleaf did not improve model performance and that the models that represent the response of gs to vapor pressure deficit performed better than corresponding models that respond to relative humidity. Within each gs model, we found large variation in the slope parameter, and this variation was attributable to the biotic driver, rather than abiotic drivers. We further investigated potential relationships between the slope parameter and the six available plant traits mentioned above, and found that only one trait, LMA, had a significant correlation with the slope parameter (R2 = 0.66, n = 15), highlighting a potential path towards improved model parameterization. This study advances understanding of gs dynamics over seasonal drought, and identifies a practical, trait‐based approach to improve modeling of carbon and water exchange in tropical forests.  相似文献

Trees on the northern boundary of Asian tropics experience hot-humid and cool-dry seasons, but little is known about their seasonal dynamics in canopy physiology. We used a canopy crane to reach the canopy of nine tropical tree species and measured canopy leaf gas exchange, water status, and trunk sap flux during the hot-humid and cool-dry seasons in Xishuangbanna, China. We found that most tree species exhibited significant reductions in maximum photosynthetic rate (Amax), stomatal conductance (gsmax), predawn and midday leaf water potentials, and maximum sap flux density in the cool-dry season. Compared to the hot-humid season, Amax declined by 19–60%, and maximum water flux declined by ?14% (an increase) to 42%. The cool-dry season decline in Amax of four species can be partly explained by an increased stomatal limitation (decreased gsmax and intercellular CO2 concentrations). Therefore, a predicted increase in drought in this region may decrease the carbon sequestration and productivity of these forests. We did not find a tradeoff between performance (Amax in the hot-humid season) and persistence through the cool-dry season; species with higher Amax in the hot-humid season did not show higher percent seasonal declines in the cool-dry season. Amax was significantly and positively associated with the trunk sap flux for both seasons, but the association was weaker in the cool-dry season. Thus, our results suggest that some tradeoffs and trait associations are environment dependent. Our results are important for understanding carbon and water fluxes of seasonal tropical forests and their responses to environmental changes.

We examined factors that limit diurnal and seasonal photosynthesis in Leymus cinereus, a robust tussock grass from shrub-steppes of western North America. Data from plants in a natural stand and in experimental field plots indicate that this bunchgrass has 1) a high photosynthetic capacity, 2) high leaf nitrogen content and high nitrogen-use efficiency, 3) a steep leaf-to-air diffusion gradient for carbon dioxide, which enhances intrinsic water-use efficiency, and 4) photosynthetic tissues that tolerate severe water stress and recover quickly from moderate water stress. Midday depressions of CO2 assimilation (A) and stomatal conductance were slight in plants with plentiful water, but marked in plants subject to moderate water stress. Midday stomatal closure in moderately stressed plants reduced intercellular carbon dioxide concentration (ci) by ≈40 μl liter-1. The maximum rate of A achieved during the day for severely stressed plants (predawn water potential = -4 MPa) was one-third and daily carbon gain per unit leaf area was about one-fourth that of well-watered plants. For plants in the natural stand, CO2-saturated photosynthesis declined almost linearly with decreasing soil water availability over the growing season, whereas there was little effect on A at CO2 ambient levels or on carboxylation efficiency until predawn water potentials reached -1.8 MPa. Nitrogen-use efficiency declined with diminishing soil moisture, but there was no seasonal change in stomatal limitation or instantaneous water-use efficiency as estimated from A vs. ci curves at optimal leaf temperature and moderate atmospheric evaporative demand. Thus, reduced stomatal conductance in response to increased evaporative demand may increase stomatal limitation diumally, but over the growing season, stomatal limitation estimated from A vs. ci curves is relatively constant because maximum stomatal conductance is closely tuned to the CO2 assimilatory capacity of the mesophyll.  相似文献

The dual-source Shuttleworth-Wallace model has been widely used to estimate and partition crop evapotranspiration (λET). Canopy stomatal conductance (Gsc), an essential parameter of the model, is often calculated by scaling up leaf stomatal conductance, considering the canopy as one single leaf in a so-called “big-leaf” model. However, Gsc can be overestimated or underestimated depending on leaf area index level in the big-leaf model, due to a non-linear stomatal response to light. A dual-leaf model, scaling up Gsc from leaf to canopy, was developed in this study. The non-linear stomata-light relationship was incorporated by dividing the canopy into sunlit and shaded fractions and calculating each fraction separately according to absorbed irradiances. The model includes: (1) the absorbed irradiance, determined by separately integrating the sunlit and shaded leaves with consideration of both beam and diffuse radiation; (2) leaf area for the sunlit and shaded fractions; and (3) a leaf conductance model that accounts for the response of stomata to PAR, vapor pressure deficit and available soil water. In contrast to the significant errors of Gsc in the big-leaf model, the predicted Gsc using the dual-leaf model had a high degree of data-model agreement; the slope of the linear regression between daytime predictions and measurements was 1.01 (R2 = 0.98), with RMSE of 0.6120 mm s−1 for four clear-sky days in different growth stages. The estimates of half-hourly λET using the dual-source dual-leaf model (DSDL) agreed well with measurements and the error was within 5% during two growing seasons of maize with differing hydrometeorological and management strategies. Moreover, the estimates of soil evaporation using the DSDL model closely matched actual measurements. Our results indicate that the DSDL model can produce more accurate estimation of Gsc and λET, compared to the big-leaf model, and thus is an effective alternative approach for estimating and partitioning λET.  相似文献
