Oil spills threaten coastlines where biological processes supply essential ecosystem services. Therefore, it is crucial to understand how oil influences the microbial communities in sediments that play key roles in ecosystem functioning. Ecosystems such as sediments are characterized by intensive bioturbation due to burrowing macrofauna that may modify the microbial metabolisms. It is thus essential to consider the bioturbation when determining the impact of oil on microbial communities. In this study, an experimental laboratory device maintaining pristine collected mudflat sediments in microcosms closer to true environmental conditions – with tidal cycles and natural seawater – was used to simulate an oil spill under bioturbation conditions. Different conditions were applied to the microcosms including an addition of: standardized oil (Blend Arabian Light crude oil, 25.6 mg.g−1 wet sediment), the common burrowing organism Hediste (Nereis) diversicolor and both the oil and H. diversicolor. The addition of H. diversicolor and its associated bioturbation did not affect the removal of petroleum hydrocarbons. After 270 days, 60% of hydrocarbons had been removed in all microcosms irrespective of the H. diversicolor addition. However, 16S-rRNA gene and 16S-cDNA T-RFLP and RT-PCR-amplicon libraries analysis showed an effect of the condition on the bacterial community structure, composition, and dynamics, supported by PerMANOVA analysis. The 16S-cDNA libraries from microcosms where H. diversicolor was added (oiled and un-oiled) showed a marked dominance of sequences related to Gammaproteobacteria. However, in the oiled-library sequences associated to Deltaproteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were also highly represented. The 16S-cDNA libraries from oiled-microcosms (with and without H. diversicolor addition) revealed two distinct microbial communities characterized by different phylotypes associated to known hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria and dominated by Gammaproteobacteria and Deltaproteobacteria. In the oiled-microcosms, the addition of H. diversicolor reduced the phylotype-richness, sequences associated to Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and Plantomycetes were not detected. These observations highlight the influence of the bioturbation on the bacterial community structure without affecting the biodegradation capacities.  相似文献

Anthropogenic stressors can alter the structure and functioning of infaunal communities, which are key drivers of the carbon cycle in marine soft sediments. Nonetheless, the compounded effects of anthropogenic stressors on carbon fluxes in soft benthic systems remain largely unknown. Here, we investigated the cumulative effects of ocean acidification (OA) and hypoxia on the organic carbon fate in marine sediments, through a mesocosm experiment. Isotopically labelled macroalgal detritus (13C) was used as a tracer to assess carbon incorporation in faunal tissue and in sediments under different experimental conditions. In addition, labelled macroalgae (13C), previously exposed to elevated CO2, were also used to assess the organic carbon uptake by fauna and sediments, when both sources and consumers were exposed to elevated CO2. At elevated CO2, infauna increased the uptake of carbon, likely as compensatory response to the higher energetic costs faced under adverse environmental conditions. By contrast, there was no increase in carbon uptake by fauna exposed to both stressors in combination, indicating that even a short‐term hypoxic event may weaken the ability of marine invertebrates to withstand elevated CO2 conditions. In addition, both hypoxia and elevated CO2 increased organic carbon burial in the sediment, potentially affecting sediment biogeochemical processes. Since hypoxia and OA are predicted to increase in the face of climate change, our results suggest that local reduction of hypoxic events may mitigate the impacts of global climate change on marine soft‐sediment systems.  相似文献

The impact of microphytobenthos and different abundances of macrofauna (Nereis diversicolor) on temporal variation of benthic metabolism was investigated in laboratory microcosms. Measurements primarily included diurnal fluxes of O2 and CO2 as well as sediment profiles of Chlorophyll a and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Net and gross primary production (2-5 and 4-7 mmol CO2 m− 2 h− 1, respectively) were relatively stable in both defaunated and faunated sediment throughout a 12 h light period. The CO2 release from sediments immediately after onset of darkness ranged from 1.5 to 3.5 mmol CO2 m− 2 h− 1 followed by a consistent decrease during the next 12 h in the dark. The decrease was more conspicuous in faunated (about 50%) than defaunated (9%) sediment. Total carbon oxidation was in both cases fuelled primarily by microphytobenthic biomass, while EPS only contributed by 1-4%. Diurnal measurements of Nereis diversicolor ventilation activity showed a significant decrease in the dark that corresponds well to the observed decrease in total metabolic activity. It is concluded that changes in solute exchange associated with animals and burrows (e.g. microbial respiration) is a major controlling factor for total sediment metabolism. In general, the faunal impact was evident as about 50% enhanced CO2 release in the dark, while net primary production was reduced by 30-50%. The turnover time of produced organic carbon is therefore considerably shorter in the presence than absence of macrofauna. Thus, the daily average exchange of CO2 was almost balanced in bioturbated sediment with a 43% share of carbon oxidation mediated by direct faunal respiration. Defaunated sediment was net autotrophic with daily primary production exceeding microbial carbon oxidation by 40%. The present study clearly demonstrates that knowledge on interactions between microphytobenthos and macrofauna is essential for understanding carbon dynamics in shallow sediments.  相似文献

The common ragworm Hediste diversicolor inhabits the shallow marine and brackish waters in the North Temperate Zone of the Atlantic. This infaunal species builds U or Y-shaped burrows in the soft sediments. H. diversicolor is gonochoristic and remains atokous throughout its life. Due to the facility of harvesting of individuals by hand and their maintenance, this species represents a good biological material for experimental studies. In consequence, the common ragworm served as a model for endocrine control of reproduction in Polychaeta and played a fundamental role in the study of immune defence in Polychaeta.Life history characteristics (longevity, spawning season, feeding tactics and growth) and population dynamics (sex ratio, density and biomass) vary greatly according to geographical location of the populations. In addition, inter-population morphological, biochemical and physiological differences have been noticed in individuals from different areas and different environmental conditions in the same areas and could be related to the limited dispersal capacity of the species. H. diversicolor interacts with its environment. The construction of burrows by individuals increases the sediment–water interface. When they ventilate their burrows, individuals verticalize oxic zones into the sediment and promote microbial and meiofaunal growth alongside their burrows. Moreover, the common ragworm is a species of commercial interest because of its use as bait in recreational fishing and as food in aquaculture. In order to alleviate environmental pressure caused by excessive demand over optimal sustainable yield of bait fisheries, intensive aquaculture has been proposed. The common ragworm could be also used as biomonitor of pollution in estuarine ecosystems.  相似文献

Biological assemblages are constantly undergoing change, with species being introduced, extirpated and experiencing shifts in their densities. Theory and experimentation suggest that the impacts of such change on ecosystem functioning should be predictable based on the biological traits of the species involved. However, interspecific interactions could alter how species affect functioning, with the strength and sign of interactions potentially depending on environmental context (e.g. homogenous vs. heterogeneous conditions) and the function considered. Here, we assessed how concurrent changes to the densities of two common marine benthic invertebrates, Corophium volutator and Hediste diversicolor, affected the ecological functions of organic matter consumption and benthic-pelagic nutrient flux. Complementary experiments were conducted within homogenous laboratory microcosms and naturally heterogeneous field plots. When the densities of the species were increased within microcosms, interspecific interactions enhanced effects on organic matter consumption and reduced effects on nutrient flux. Trait-based predictions of how each species would affect functioning were only consistently supported when the density of the other species was low. In field plots, increasing the density of either species had a positive effect on organic matter consumption (with no significant interspecific interactions) but no effect on nutrient flux. Our results indicate that species-specific effects on ecosystem functioning can be altered by interspecific interactions, which can be either facilitative (positive) or antagonistic (negative) depending on the function considered. The impacts of biodiversity change may therefore not be predictable based solely on the biological traits of the species involved. Possible explanations for why interactions were detected in microcosms but not in the field are discussed.  相似文献

Impacts of organic enrichment and a modified benthic fauna community (caused by fish farming) on benthic mineralization rates and nutrient cycling were studied in sediments at one Danish and one Cypriote fish farm. Sediment organic matter concentration and macrofauna community composition were manipulated in microcosms and changes in total benthic metabolism (oxygen consumption, TCO2 production), anaerobic metabolism (sulfate reduction rates), nutrient fluxes and sediment parameters were followed for a period of 3 weeks. Mineralization rates were found to be highly correlated with irrigation velocities and largest fauna effects were found in the Danish sediments with the large and active irrigating climax species (Nereis diversicolor and Macoma balthica). Eastern Mediterranean climax species (Glycera rouxii and Naineris laevigata) also stimulated mineralization rates but to a smaller extent due to lower irrigation, whereas the opportunistic species (Capitella in Danish sediment and Hermodice carunculata in Cypriote sediment) showed less effect on mineralization. Ammonium and phosphate release increased with increasing irrigation velocities, but much less in Cyprus indicating higher nutrient retention at the ultra-oligotrophic location compared to eutrophic Danish site. Irrigation velocities, and thus mineralization rates, increased by organic matter loading, indicating larger fauna-induced oxidation in enriched environments. The result implies that a change in fauna structure in fish farm sediment towards smaller opportunistic polychaete species with lower irrigation will result in slower mineralization rates and potentially increase accumulation of organic waste products.  相似文献

Diatom blooms may be initiated by cells that have survived in the plankton or germinated resting stages from the sediments. However, it is not well understood how these different inocula contribute to bloom development. We followed diatom community development in twenty‐liter microcosms given different inocula. Surface sediment and phytoplankton were collected in Gullmar Fjord, Sweden. Replicate microcosms were then dosed with local sediment and/or plankton and incubated in situ in Gullmar Fjord. We also followed the concurrent development of the phytoplankton community in the fjord. Experiments run in both spring and fall 2002 showed that bloom development in the microcosms was significantly faster when seeded by planktonic cells. However, addition of sediment may have stimulated planktonic growth and also provided additional propagules. The type of inoculum used strongly influenced the diatom composition in the microcosms. Sediment additions, through germination of resting stages, resulted in communities dominated by Detonula confervacea and Thalassiosira minima in spring, and Skeletonema costatum in fall. Planktonic inocula resulted in blooms of T. nordenskioeldii and Chaetoceros debilis in spring, and S. costatum and several Chaetoceros spp. in fall. Microcosms dosed with both plankton and sediment showed a mixed species assemblage. Comparisons between the microcosms and fjord phytoplankton suggest an important role for benthic seeding of diatom blooms.  相似文献

Sedimentation and overfishing are important local stressors on coral reefs that can independently result in declines in coral recruitment and shifts to algal-dominated states. However, the role of herbivory in driving recovery across environmental gradients is often unclear. Here we investigate early successional benthic communities and coral recruitment across a sediment gradient in Palau, Micronesia over a 12-month period. Total sedimentation rates measured by ‘TurfPods’ varied from 0.03 ± 0.1 SE mg cm−2 d−1 at offshore sites to 1.32 ± 0.2 mg cm−2 d−1 at inshore sites. To assess benthic succession, three-dimensional settlement tiles were deployed at sites with experimental cages used to exclude tile access to larger herbivorous fish. Benthic assemblages exhibited rapid transitions across the sediment gradient within three months of deployment. At low levels of sedimentation (less than 0.6 mg cm−2 d−1), herbivory resulted in communities dominated by coral recruitment inducers (short turf algae and crustose coralline algae), whereas exclusion of herbivores resulted in the overgrowth of coral inhibitors (encrusting and upright foliose macroalgae). An ‘inducer threshold’ was found under increasing levels of sedimentation (greater than 0.6 mg cm−2 d−1), with coral inducers having limited to no presence in communities, and herbivore access to tiles resulted in sediment-laden turf algal assemblages, while exclusion of herbivores resulted in invertebrates (sponges, ascidians) and terrestrial sediment accumulation. A ‘coral recruitment threshold’ was found at 0.8 mg cm−2 d−1, below which net coral recruitment was reduced by 50% in the absence of herbivores, while recruitment was minimal above the threshold. Our results highlight nonlinear trajectories of benthic succession across sediment gradients and identify strong interactions between sediment and herbivory that have cascading effects on coral recruitment. Local management strategies that aim to reduce sedimentation and turbidity and manage herbivore fisheries can have measurable effects on benthic community succession and coral recruitment, enhancing reef resilience and driving coral recovery.  相似文献

Members of the polychaete family Nereididae do not occur naturally in the Caspian Sea but are documented intentional human introductions that commenced in 1939. However, the identity of the species involved has been uncertain; material has been identified as both Alitta succinea and Hediste diversicolor. In this study, we confirm the presence of both species in the Caspian Sea. We discuss the distribution of both species, based on tolerance to physical factors, especially salinity. Although establishment of this partially predatory Nereidid, as a food reservoir could facilitate the recreation of commercially exploited fish stock, the consequences for native benthic communities are unclear and may be subject to unforeseen negative impacts.  相似文献

Arsenic contamination in groundwater has been reported in the Jianghan Plain of China since 2005, yet little is known about the microbial communities involved in As mobilization in this area, especially the dissimilatory arsenate-reducing bacteria (DARB) communities. Here, we conducted a cultivation-independent investigation on core sediments collected from a region with arsenic-contaminated groundwater in the Jianghan Plain to reveal the total bacteria and DARB community structures. Highly diverse As-resistant bacteria communities were found from sediment samples via high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes. Notably, we identified 27 unique arrA gene (encoding the alpha subunit of dissimilatory arsenate reductase) phylotypes, none of which was related to any previously described arrA gene sequence. This suggests a novel and unique DARB community in the sediments of the Jianghan Plain and expands our knowledge about the distribution and diversity of this group of bacteria in natural environments. Moreover, RDA and CCA demonstrated that total bacterial communities and specific functional groups are controlled by different environmental factors. Specifically, sediment pH, NH4+, total nitrogen, total Fe, total organic carbon and total phosphorus were the key factors driving total bacterial community compositions, while As significantly shaped DARB community structures. This report is the first to describe DARB communities and their correlation with environmental factors in Jianghan Plain sediments, which could give us clues about the origin of the arsenic contamination of groundwater in this region.  相似文献

The main objective of this study was to measure the impact of benthic invertebrate diversity on processes occurring at the water-sediment interface. We analyzed the effects of interactions between three shallow water species (Cerastoderma edule, Corophium volutator, and Nereis diversicolor). The impacts of different species richness treatments were measured on sediment reworking, bacterial characteristics, and biogeochemical processes (bromide fluxes, O2 uptake, nutrient fluxes, and porewater chemistry) in sediment cores. The results showed that the three species exhibited different bioturbation activities in the experimental system: C. edule acted as a biodiffusor, mixing particles in the top 2 cm of the sediments; C. volutator produced and irrigated U-shaped tubes in the top 2 cm of the sediments; and N. diversicolor produced and irrigated burrow galleries in the whole sediment cores. C. edule had minor effects on biogeochemical processes, whereas the other species, through their irrigation of the burrows, increased the solute exchange between the water column and the sediment two-fold. These impacts on sediment structure and solute transport increased the O2 consumption and the release of nutrients from sediments. As N. diversicolor burrowed deeper in the sediment than C. volutator, it irrigated a greater volume of sediments, with great impact on the sediment cores. Most treatments with a mixture of species indicated that observed values were often lower than predicted values from the addition of the individual effects of each species, demonstrating a negative interaction among species. This type of negative interaction measured between species on ecosystem processes certainly resulted from an overlap of bioturbation activities among the three species which lived and foraged in the same habitat (water-sediment interface). All treatments with N. diversicolor (in isolation and in mixture) produced similar effect on sediment reworking, water fluxes, nutrient releases, porewater chemistry, and bacterial characteristics. Whichever species associated with N. diversicolor, the bioturbation activities of the worm hid the effect of the other species. The results suggest that, in the presence of several species that use and modify the same sediment space, impact of invertebrates on ecosystem processes was essentially due to the most efficient bioturbator of the community (N. diversicolor). In consequence, the functional traits (mode of bioturbation, depth of burrowing, feeding behaviour) of an individual species in a community could be more important than species richness for some ecosystem processes.  相似文献

Disturbance-mediated species loss has prompted research considering how ecosystem functions are changed when biota is impaired. However, there is still limited empirical evidence from natural environments evaluating the direct and indirect (i.e. via biota) effects of disturbance on ecosystem functioning. Oxygen deficiency is a widespread threat to coastal and estuarine communities. While the negative impacts of hypoxia on benthic communities are well known, few studies have assessed in situ how benthic communities subjected to different degrees of hypoxic stress alter their contribution to ecosystem functioning. We studied changes in sediment ecosystem function (i.e. oxygen and nutrient fluxes across the sediment water-interface) by artificially inducing hypoxia of different durations (0, 3, 7 and 48 days) in a subtidal sandy habitat. Benthic chamber incubations were used for measuring responses in sediment oxygen and nutrient fluxes. Changes in benthic species richness, structure and traits were quantified, while stress-induced behavioral changes were documented by observing bivalve reburial rates. The initial change in faunal behavior was followed by non-linear degradation in benthic parameters (abundance, biomass, bioturbation potential), gradually impairing the structural and functional composition of the benthic community. In terms of ecosystem function, the increasing duration of hypoxia altered sediment oxygen consumption and enhanced sediment effluxes of NH4 + and dissolved Si. Although effluxes of PO4 3− were not altered significantly, changes were observed in sediment PO4 3− sorption capability. The duration of hypoxia (i.e. number of days of stress) explained a minor part of the changes in ecosystem function. Instead, the benthic community and disturbance-driven changes within the benthos explained a larger proportion of the variability in sediment oxygen- and nutrient fluxes. Our results emphasize that the level of stress to the benthic habitat matters, and that the link between biodiversity and ecosystem function is likely to be affected by a range of factors in complex, natural environments.  相似文献

The effects of short term hypoxia on bioturbation activity and inherent solute fluxes are scarcely investigated even if increasing number of coastal areas are subjected to transient oxygen deficits. In this work dark fluxes of oxygen (O2), dissolved inorganic carbon (TCO2) and nutrients across the sediment-water interface, as well as rates of denitrification (isotope pairing), were measured in intact sediment cores collected from the dystrophic pond of Sali e Pauli (Sardinia, Italy). Sediments were incubated at 100, 70, 40 and 10% of O2 saturation in the overlying water, with both natural benthic communities, dominated by the polychaete Polydora ciliata (11.100 ± 2.500  ind. m− 2), and after the addition of individuals of the deep-burrower polychaete Hediste diversicolor. Below an uppermost oxic layer of ~ 1 mm, sediments were highly reduced, with up to 6 mM of S2− in the 5 mm layer. Flux of S2− and O2 calculated from pore water gradients were 8.61 ± 1.12 and − 2.27 ± 0.56 mmol m− 2 h− 1, respectively. However, sediment oxygen demand (SOD) calculated from core incubation was − 10.52 ± 0.33 mmol m− 2 h− 1, suggesting a major contribution of P. ciliata to O2-mediated sulphide oxidation. P. ciliata also strongly stimulated NH4+ and PO43− fluxes, with rates ~ 15 and ~ 30 folds higher, respectively, than those estimated from pore water gradients. P. ciliata activity was significantly reduced at 10% O2 saturation, coupled to decreased rates of solutes transfer. The addition of H. diversicolor further stimulated SOD, NH4+ efflux and SiO2 mobilisation. Similarly to P. ciliata, the degree of stimulation of SOD and NH4+ flux by H. diversicolor depended on the level of oxygen saturation. TCO2 regeneration, respiratory quotients, PO43− fluxes and denitrification of added 15NO3 were not affected by the addition of H. diversicolor, but depended upon the O2 levels in the water column. Denitrification rates supported by water column 14NO3 and sedimentary nitrification were both negligible (< 0.5 µmol m− 2 h− 1). They were not significantly affected by oxygen saturation nor by bioturbation, probably due to the limited availability of NO3 in the water column (< 3 µM) and O2 in the sediments. This study demonstrates for the first time the integrated short term effect of transient hypoxia and bioturbation on solute fluxes across the sediment-water interface within a simplified lagoonal benthic community.  相似文献

Ocean acidification (OA) may alter the behaviour of sediment‐bound metals, modifying their bioavailability and thus toxicity. We provide the first experimental test of this hypothesis with the amphipod Corophium volutator. Amphipods were exposed to two test sediments, one with relatively high metals concentrations (Σmetals 239 mg kg?1) and a reference sediment with lower contamination (Σmetals 82 mg kg?1) under conditions that mimic current and projected conditions of OA (390–1140 μatm pCO2). Survival and DNA damage was measured in the amphipods, whereas the flux of labile metals was measured in the sediment and water column (WC) using Diffusive Gradients in Thin‐films. The contaminated sediments became more acutely toxic to C. volutator under elevated pCO2 (1140 μatm). There was also a 2.7‐fold increase in DNA damage in amphipods exposed to the contaminated sediment at 750 μatm pCO2, as well as increased DNA damage in organisms exposed to the reference sediment, but only at 1140 μatm pCO2. The projected pCO2 concentrations increased the flux of nickel and zinc to labile states in the WC and pore water. However, the increase in metal flux at elevated pCO2 was equal between the reference and contaminated sediments or, occasionally, greater from reference sediments. Hence, the toxicological interaction between OA and contaminants could not be explained by e ffects of pH on metal speciation. We propose that the additive physiological effects of OA and contaminants will be more important than changes in metal speciation in determining the responses of benthos to contaminated sediments under OA. Our data demonstrate clear potential for near‐future OA to increase the susceptibility of benthic ecosystems to contaminants. Environmental policy should consider contaminants within the context of changing environmental conditions. Specifically, sediment metals guidelines may need to be reevaluated to afford appropriate environmental protection under future conditions of OA.  相似文献

The Macoma balthica community, which is widely distributed in intertidal soft sediments bordering the north Atlantic, is dominated by two functional groups with different sediment mixing modes: the biodiffusers M. balthica and Mya arenaria and the gallery-diffuser Nereis virens. To compare the effects of these two groups on sediment oxygen uptake rates, we used experimental microcosms with identical biovolumes to measure the influence of each species on oxygen uptake. The two biodiffusers had similar effects on oxygen uptake in spite of different space occupation and different feeding, ventilation and burrowing modes. Biodiffusers and gallery-diffusers had different effects on oxygen uptake. Periodic ventilation by the gallery-diffusers stimulated the oxygen uptake by the sediment more than the steady activities of the biodiffusers. Temporal variation in oxygen fluxes in bioturbated microcosms was linked to construction and maintenance of biogenic structures. The results confirm that the functional group approach to bioturbation is a useful tool for quantifying the effects of intertidal benthic communities on benthic fluxes.  相似文献

A survey was undertaken in 1985 to assess spatial and temporal trends in the benthic community structure in relation to sediment contamination and wastewater sources at 70 stations between Whitefish Bay and lower Lake George in the St. Marys River. Cluster analysis identified seven benthic communities. Three were identified as pollution impacted, based on a preponderance of tubificids and nematodes, usually at high densities (up to 259 000 m-2), but sometimes at low densities (< 100 m-2) at individual stations. Impacted communities occurred downstream of industrial and municipal sources and in depositional areas, and were confined mainly to Canadian waters. Unimpacted communities had greater numbers of taxa, and occurred upstream of point sources, along the U.S. shoreline, and in most areas of downstream lakes. Impacted and unimpacted communities were separated along particle size and contaminant gradients in river sediments. Despite recent reductions in pollutant loadings and improvements in sediment quality, no major changes were apparent in the status of the benthic community from earlier surveys.  相似文献

Microcosms were designed to facilitate studies of the fate, functioning, and ecological effects of microorganisms released into the aquatic environment. The microcosms were three-phase systems (sediment/water/air) with three compartments (a primary producer component, a herbivore grazer component, and intact sediment cores). The microcosms were validated by comparing gross ecological parameters and microbial community structure between the microcosms and the eutrophic Lake Bagsværd, which was simulated in the model. The photosynthetic potential and chlorophyll a concentrations were significantly lower in the microcosms than in the lake, which apparently was due to inorganic nutrient limitation. In the microcosms, total bacterial numbers and metabolic activity by [3H]thymidine incorporation were unaffected by the reduced algal biomass and primary production, simulating field conditions closely, with a strong dependence on temperature. Two days after filling the microcosms, the percentage of similarity of the microbial communities in the microcosm and Lake Bagsværd was 40%, measured by hybridizations of total microbial DNA. The similarity increased during the 10-day experimental period to 63–76%. In two experiments, Alcaligenes eutrophus AEO106(pRO101) was released into the microcosms. The release reduced the similarity between microcosms and lake to 2% and 27%, depending on the number of introduced cells. Concomitant to a decline in the A. eutrophus AEO106(pRO101) population, the similarity gradually recovered. It is concluded that the microcosms can simulate a freshwater lake ecosystem, but care has to be taken when extrapolating microcosm results to the source ecosystem because of the possible different selective conditions in the microcosm.  相似文献

This experimental study quantified and compared particle-mixing and solute transport by the polychaetes Marenzelleria neglecta (2 g ww, 3200 ind. m− 2) and Hediste diversicolor (2 g ww, 800 ind. m− 2) in Baltic Sea sediments. Particle tracers (luminophores) were added to the sediment surface and their vertical distribution in the sediment was measured after 10 d. The rate of particle mixing was quantified using a gallery-diffusion model calculating the biodiffusion coefficient Db and the non-local transport parameter r. Bioirrigation was measured by adding an inert solute tracer (bromide) to the overlying water 1, 1.5 and 2 d before the end of the experiment, and quantified by calculating the net bromide flux and fitting the bromide profiles to a 1D diffusion model providing an apparent biodiffusion coefficient Da. The two polychaete worms displayed similar particle-mixing and solute transport efficiencies (based on total biomass) despite different modes of bioturbation. However, H. diversicolor was a more efficient particle-reworker and M. neglecta a more efficient bioirrigator, on an individual level. H. diversicolor buried a higher percentage (13%) of luminophores below the top 0.5 cm surface layer than M. neglecta (6%). Db did not differ between the two species (2.4 × 10− 3 cm2 d− 1) indicating a similar rate of diffusive mixing of the top sediment, however, the non-local transport parameter r was 2.5 y− 1 for H. diversicolor and zero for M. neglecta, suggesting no significant particle-transport below the biodiffusive layer by M. neglecta. The average individual net bromide fluxes obtained were ca. 0.01 mL min− 1 for H. diversicolor and 0.003 mL min− 1 for M. neglecta, corresponding to an area-specific rate of ca. 12 L m− 2 d− 1 at the used densities. Da did not differ between the two polychaetes, suggesting a higher individual solute exchange efficiency of M. neglecta considering the much higher ventilation rates reported for H. diversicolor than for Marenzelleria sp. The ongoing colonization of Baltic Sea sediments by M. neglecta at high densities may thus lead to an enhanced soluble release of both nutrients and contaminants. These results add information to the understanding of the potential effects of the invasion of M. neglecta on sediment biogeochemistry when competing with and/or replacing native species.  相似文献

Effects of the burrowing mayfly, Hexagenia, on nitrogen and sulfur fractions of sediment, and overlying water were determined. Laboratory microcosms were used to reproduce the benthic environment. The activities of Hexagenia increased sediment Eh (1.98 ± 0.486 (22) mV · day −1), and decreased pH in sediment (−0.007 ± 0.001 (22) day −1) and overlying water(-0.024 ± 0.004 (10) day−1). In the control, Eh decreased and pH did not change. The presence of Hexagenia also markedly increased ammonia in sediment (5.46 ± 0.14 (22) ppm N · day−1) and overlying water (0.792 ± 0.154 (10) ppm N · day−1), while the control did not change. In addition, the sulfate fraction of sediment (0.177 ± 0.006 (17)% dry mass) and water (50.0 ± 4.9 (5) mg · I−1) in microcosms with Hexagenia was greater than that of the control (0.151 ± 0.005 (16)% dry mass; 14.7 ± 1.71 (3) mg · 1−1) at the termination of the experiment. Hexagenia may also stimulate the mineralization of carbon-bonded sulfur. The general role of Hexagenia in altering sediment chemistry is discussed.  相似文献
