Pollination biology, breeding system, and floral phenology of the columnar cactus Stenocereus stellatus were studied in wild, wild managed in situ and cultivated populations of central Mexico, in order to examine whether these aspects have been modified under domestication and whether they determine reproductive barriers between wild and manipulated individuals. Individuals of both wild and manipulated populations are self-incompatible, indicating that artificial selection has not modified the breeding system. Their pollination biology is also similar. Anthesis is mainly nocturnal, with a peak of nectar production between 0200 and 0400 when the stigma presents maximum turgidity. Nocturnal visitors are the effective pollinators. Nearly 75% of flowers exposed for nocturnal pollination set fruit, while none of the flowers exposed for diurnal pollination produced fruits. The bats Leptonycteris curasoae, L. nivalis, and Choeronycteris mexicana (Glossophaginae) are the most likely pollinators, and their time of foraging is synchronized with the time of nectar production and stigma receptivity in S. stellatus. Bats potentially move pollen over a considerable distance, so there is apparently no spatial isolation to prevent pollen exchange between wild and cultivated populations. Phenological studies showed that there are also no apparent temporal barriers. However, manual cross pollination failed between some domesticated and wild phenotypes, suggesting that gene flow between wild and cultivated populations might be limited by pollen incompatibility.  相似文献

It has been suggested that there is a geographic dichotomy in the pollination systems of chiropterophilous columnar cacti: in intra‐tropical areas they are pollinated almost exclusively by bats, whereas in extratropical areas they are pollinated by bats, birds and bees. However, currently the studies are clumped both taxonomically (mainly Pachycereeae species) and geographically (mainly in the Tehuacan Valley and the Sonoran Desert). This clumping limits the possibility of generalising the pattern to other regions or cactus tribes. Only four of the 36 chiropterophilous cacti in Pilosocereus have been studied. Despite the tropical distribution of two Pilosocereus species, bees account for 40–100% of their fruit set. We examined how specialised is the pollination system of P. leucocephalus in eastern Mexico. As we studied tropical populations, we expected a bat‐specialised pollination system. However, previous studies of Pilosocereus suggest that a generalised pollination system is also possible. We found that this cactus is mainly bat‐pollinated (bats account for 33–65% of fruit set); although to a lesser degree, diurnal visitors also caused some fruit set (7–15%). Diurnal visitors were more effective in populations containing honeybee hives. P. leucocephalus is partially self‐compatible (14–18% of fructification) but unable to set fruit without visitors. Despite the variation in pollination system, P. leucocephalus shows more affinity with other columnar cacti from tropical regions than with those from extratropical regions. Although we report here that a new species of tropical Pilosocereus is relatively bat‐specialised, this Cereeae genus is more flexible in its pollination system than the Pachycereeae genera.  相似文献

We document the pollination biology and mating systems of Neobuxbaumia mezcalaensis and Neobuxbaumia macrocephala, two Mexican giant columnar cacti. These two species form mixed forests in the western Tehuacan Valley, Mexico. The flowers of both N. mezcalaensis and N. macrocephala exhibit nocturnal anthesis, are self-incompatible, and are pollinated primarily by three species of nectar-feeding bats (Choeronycteris mexicana, Leptonycteris curasoae, and Leptonycteris nivalis). Neobuxbaumia mezcalaensis is androdioecious, a breeding system that appears to be uncommon among Cactaceae. Neobuxbaumia macrocephala is hermaphroditic. We hypothesize that columnar cacti show a geographical dichotomy in floral biology specialization that probably can be related to predictability in pollinator abundance.  相似文献

The geographic dichotomy hypothesis suggests that columnar cacti inhabiting the tropics depend on flower visitors (birds and bats) for their pollination, showing highly specialized animal‐pollinated systems. This pattern has been demonstrated for the northern hemisphere; however, our knowledge of the species of columnar cacti growing in the southern tropics is still scarce. In this study, we studied the reproductive biology of Oreocereus fossulatus (Cactaceae, Tribe Trichocereae), an endemic, columnar cactus of the tropical Andes, to determine if its pollination system tends to be more generalized (mixed systems of autogamy and xenogamy) than specialized (xenogamy) as a consequence of the geographic position of where it lives. Observations of the frequency of visits showed that Patagona gigas (Trochillidae) is its main pollinator. It visits the flowers when they are open, coinciding with the periods of greater floral reward (dusk and dawn of the first day of anthesis). The treatments of autogamy, xenogamy and geitonogamy produced fruits, showing that O. fossulatus exhibits a generalized pollination system, in the same way as its congeneric species O. celsianus, which is distributed farther south in the Prepuna biogeographical region. Our results suggest that species partially specializing in pollination by hummingbirds and, besides, capable of autopollination, could be common in the tropical and subtropical Andes, probably as a response to the unpredictable environments present in their ecosystems.  相似文献

Cross‐ and self‐fertilization in angiosperms are regulated by several factors, and a knowledge of the mechanism and time of spontaneous self‐pollination offers opportunities for a better understanding of the evolution of mating systems and floral traits. The floral biology of five species of Gentianaceae found in high‐altitude neotropical grassland is presented, with emphasis on the mechanisms that promote spontaneous self‐pollination. A presumed floral Batesian mimicry system is suggested between the rare and rewardless Zygostigma australe and Calydorea campestris, a species of Iridaceae with pollen‐flowers, pollinated by syrphids and bees. The floral morphology of the other four gentian species points to three different pollination syndromes: melittophily, phalaenophily and ornithophily. However, with the exception of the nocturnal Helia oblongifolia, flowers are nectarless and appear to exhibit non‐model deceptive mechanisms, providing similar floral cues to some sympatric rewarding species with the same syndrome. The similar mechanism of spontaneous self‐pollination in Calolisianthus pedunculatus, Calolisianthus pendulus and H. oblongifolia (Helieae) is based on the stigmatic movements towards the anthers. Selfing is promoted by movements of the style/stigma and of the corolla in Deianira nervosa and Z. australe (Chironieae), respectively. The movements of stamens, style and stigma during anthesis seem to be the most common method of spontaneous self‐pollination in angiosperms. It is suggested that the evolution of delayed spontaneous self‐pollination would be more expected in those taxa with dichogamous flowers associated with herkogamy. Such a characteristic is frequent in long‐lived flowers of certain groups of Asteridae, which comprise most documented cases of autonomous selfing. Thus, the presence of dichogamy associated with herkogamy (which supposedly evolved as a result of selection to promote both separation of male and female functions and the efficient transfer of cross pollen) may be the first step in the adaptive evolution of delayed selfing to provide reproductive assurance. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 160 , 357–368.  相似文献

  • To determine seed removal influence on seed populations, we need to quantify pre‐ and post‐dispersal seed removal. Several studies have quantified seed removal in temperate American deserts, but few studies have been performed in tropical deserts. These studies have only quantified pre‐ or post‐dispersal seed removal, thus underestimating the influence of seed removal. We evaluated pre‐ and post‐dispersal seed removal in the columnar cactus Stenocereus stellatus in a Mexican tropical desert.
  • We performed selective exclosure experiments to estimate percentage of seeds removed by ants, birds and rodents during the pre‐ and post‐dispersal phases. We also conducted field samplings to estimate abundance of the most common seed removers.
  • Birds (10–28%) removed a higher percentage of seeds than ants (2%) and rodents (1–4%) during pre‐dispersal seed removal. Melanerpes hypopolius was probably the main bird removing seeds from fruits. Ants (62–64%) removed a higher percentage of seeds than birds (34–38%) and rodents (16–30%) during post‐dispersal seed removal. Pogonomyrmex barbatus was probably the main ant removing seeds from soil.
  • Birds and ants are the main pre‐ and post‐dispersal seed removers in S. stellatus, respectively. Further studies in other S. stellatus populations and plants with different life forms and fruit types will contribute to evaluate seed removal in tropical American deserts.

  • Mexico has one of the highest diversities of barrel cacti species worldwide; however, all are threatened and require conservation policies. Information on their reproductive biology is crucial, but few studies are available. Ferocactus recurvus subsp. recurvus is a barrel cactus endemic to the Tehuacán‐Cuicatlán Valley. Our research aimed to characterise its floral and pollination biology. We hypothesised bee pollination, as suggested by its floral morphology and behaviour, and self‐incompatibility, like most barrel cacti studied.
  • Three study sites were selected in the semiarid Zapotitlán Valley, Mexico. We examined 190 flowers from 180 plants to determine: morphometry and behaviour of flowers, flower visitors and probable pollinators, and breeding system.
  • Flowers showed diurnal anthesis, lasting 2–5 days, the stigma being receptive on day 2 or 3 after the start of anthesis. Flowers produced scarce/no nectar and main visitors were bees (Apidae), followed by flies (Muscidae), ants (Formicidae), thrips (Thripidae) and hummingbirds (Throchilidae); however, only native bees and occasionally wasps contacted the stigma and anthers. Pollination experiments revealed that this species is self‐incompatible and xenogamous. In natural conditions, fruit set was 60% and cross‐pollination fruit set was 100%. Percentage seed germination resulting from cross‐pollination was higher than in the control treatment.
  • Our results provide ecological information for conservation programmes to ensure a high probability of breeding and seed production in natural populations of F. recurvus.

GLP‐1 is an incretin peptide involved in the regulation of glucose metabolism and the glucose‐dependent stimulation of insulin secretion. Ex‐4 is a paralog of GLP‐1 that has comparable GLP‐1R potency but extended physiological action. GLP‐1 and Ex‐4 are helical peptides that share ~50% sequence homology but differ at several residues, notably the second amino acid which controls susceptibility to DPP‐IV cleavage. This single amino acid difference yields divergent receptor potency when studied in the context of the two hormone sequences. Ex‐4 uniquely tolerates Gly2 through select amino acid differences in the middle region of the peptide that are absent in GLP‐1. We report that substitution of Ex‐4 amino acids Glu16, Leu21, and Glu24 to the GLP‐1 sequence enabled Gly2 tolerance. The coordination of the N‐terminus with these central residues shows an interaction of substantial importance not only to DPP‐IV stability but also to receptor activation. Extension of this observation to glucagon‐based co‐agonist peptides showed different structural requirements for effective communication between the N‐terminus and the mid‐section of these peptides in achieving high potency agonism at the GLP‐1 and GCGRs. In a changing climate, it is imperative to understand potential ecosystem resilience at all taxonomic levels. I compare seasonal small mammal utilization of woodlands (tree islands) and grasslands in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, to elucidate macrohabitat relationships and to test whether the two macrohabitats are similar in their ability to serve as a source of colonizers for the other after disturbance. Capture–mark–recapture data revealed that abundances for Dendromus mesomelas and Gerbilliscus leucogaster were higher in grasslands than tree islands, while Mus indutus abundance appeared higher in the grasslands in the dry season but roughly equal in the rainy season. Mastomys spp. and Steatomys pratensis maintained low levels in the grassland habitat throughout the year and experienced a population peak in the tree island habitat during the rainy season. There were no significant differences in sex ratio, mean mass or breeding condition. Dominance and total biomass were higher in the grasslands with the trend more pronounced in the rainy season. Terrestrial small mammals in the Okavango Delta employ differing strategies in macrohabitat selection and some exploit tree islands when herbaceous cover is present. Metacommunity dynamics exist for some species, and both habitats can serve as a source of colonizers under certain conditions.  相似文献

Abstract. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of flooding and draw‐down on the germination from the coastal grassland seed banks and to determine whether the effect of flooding varies between the delta and the seashore. Seed bank samples were collected from three shore transects in SW Finland, two on the shore of the Baltic Sea and one on the delta of River Kokemäenjoki. Samples were germinated in non‐flooded and flooded conditions for over a month, after which both treatments were maintained in non‐flooded conditions. A total of 9267 seedlings of 47 species germinated and mean density of seeds in the soil was ca. 84 000/m2. Most of the seedlings were monocots (98%) and perennials (98%). Ca. 30–40% of the species found in the above‐ground vegetation had a seed bank including the majority of the most abundant species. The number of seeds and species richness increased as the organic layer became thicker. The organic layer was thicker in the seashore samples and the seed bank was significantly larger than in the delta. The flooding and draw‐down treatment significantly increased the number of germinating seedlings in the seashore and also increased species richness in two transects, one in the delta and the other in the seashore. Two species, Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani and Typha latifolia, had significantly higher germination in the flooded treatment than in the non‐flooded. Apparently, many species in these coastal grasslands have adapted to flood disturbance and for seeds of some species flooding may work as a positive signal, possibly breaking dormancy.  相似文献

Although the pollinators of some plant species differ across regions, only a few mammal‐pollinated plant species have regional pollinator differences in Asia. Mucuna macrocarpa (Fabaceae) is pollinated by squirrels, flying foxes, and macaques in subtropical and temperate islands. In this study, the pollination system of M. macrocarpa was identified in tropical Asia, where the genus originally diversified. This species requires “explosive opening” of the flower, where the wing petals must be pressed down and the banner petal pushed upward to fully expose the stamens and pistil. A bagging experiment showed that fruits did not develop in inflorescences (n = 66) with unopened flowers, whereas fruits developed in 68.7% of inflorescences (n = 131) with opened flowers. This indicated that the explosive opening is needed for the species to reproduce. Four potential pollinator mammals were identified by a video camera‐trap survey, and 78.3% and 60.1% of monitored inflorescences (n = 138) were opened by gray‐bellied squirrels (Callosciurus caniceps) and Finlayson's squirrels (C. finlaysonii), respectively, even though more than 10 mammal species visited flowers. Nectar was surrounded by the calyx, and the volume and sugar concentration of secreted nectar did not change during the day. This nectar secretion pattern is similar to those reported by previous studies in other regions. These results showed that the main pollinators of M. macrocarpa in the tropics are squirrels. However, the species' nectar secretion pattern is not specifically adapted to this particular pollinator. Pollinators of M. macrocarpa differ throughout the distribution range based on the fauna present, but there might not have been no distinctive changes in the attractive traits that accompanied these changes in pollinators.  相似文献

Caesalpinia echinata (brazilwood) is a threatened tree endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic forest with a global importance as it is worldwide used to manufacture the most desirable bows for violins, violas, and cellos. Although there is an international initiative for its conservation, there is a lack of studies on the reproductive biology of the species, as for the genus, a fundamental understanding for the conservation of any species. In this paper, we investigated the phenology, pollination, and breeding system of C. echinata, presenting some conservation guidelines for the species, together with a review of studies on the reproductive biology in Caesalpinia s.l. The genus has a complex taxonomic history with recent attempts to reassign its limits. Pending a final resolution of the placing of some species (including C. echinata) our revision covers the traditional Caesalpinia s.l. and includes annotations indicating to which segregate genus each species is now considered to belong, as well as the appropriate combination where this has already been published. Field work was undertaken from October/2004 to December/2006 at the Tapacurá Ecological Station, northeastern Brazil. Flowering occurred mainly in the dry season and the peak of seed dispersal was at the beginning of the wet season. Anthesis is diurnal, lasting 1 day. The flowers are zygomorphic, yellow, sweet-scented, and the effective pollinators were mainly medium-sized to large bees of the genera Centris and Xylocopa, together with the introduced Apis mellifera. Nectar volume and sugar concentration averaged 2.9±1.0 μL and 29.5±9.4%, respectively. The ovary has 1–4 ovules (2.35±0.58) and the pollen/ovule ratio was 5631.2; pollen viability was high (95.9±4.8%). Natural fruit set was low (9.2%) with mature fruits averaging 1.7±0.9 seeds. Results of the controlled pollinations and analysis of pollen tube growth revealed C. echinata presents late-acting self-incompatibility. The pollination biology and breeding system of C. echinata are discussed, together with available data on its genetics and physiology, in terms of best conservation practice for this endangered species. Data on the reproductive biology of the genus are scarce, revealing the predominance of bee pollination and SI system, with the occurrence of late-acting self-incompatibility mechanisms in some species.  相似文献

Question: Although mangrove forests are generally regarded as highly threatened, some studies have shown that mangrove canopies in the Pacific coast of Mexico have been increasing in recent decades. We investigated the possible causes driving this reported mangrove expansion. Location: The mangrove lagoons of Magdalena Bay in Baja California, Mexico. Methods: We used 50‐year‐old aerial photographs and 24‐year‐old satellite images to compare long‐term vegetation change, surveyed a coastal vegetation transect to analyse flooding levels, compiled six decades of tidal and oceanographic information, as well as hurricane data to analyse changes in storm frequency or sea‐level conditions, and used isotopic analysis to date the age of trees along the gradient. Results: A significant increase in mangrove cover has occurred in backwaters of the lagoons during the last 40 years, and especially during the El Niño anomalies of the 1980s and 1990s, while at the same time the mangrove fringe has been receding. Conclusions: The observed change can be attributed to the combined action of the warm surface waters of El Niño events and sea‐level rise. Jointly, these two effects are sufficient to flood large areas of previously non‐flooded salt flats, dispersing mangrove seedlings inland. The inland expansion of mangroves, however, does not ease conservation concerns, as it is the seaward fringes, and not the inland margins, that provide the most valuable environmental services for fisheries and coastal protection.  相似文献

Abstract. Plant life‐form abundance along a 600 m altitudinal gradient (1600–2200 m a.s.l.) in the semi‐arid valley of Zapotitlán, México was correlated with soil characteristics and climatic variables. One mixed soil sample was taken and analysed for each of six elevations, temperature was estimated using a terrestrial thermal gradient, and precipitation using a linear regression between total annual precipitation and the elevation of the weather stations in the valley. Rosettes, microphanerophytes, therophytes and nanophanerophytes were well represented throughout the gradient. Columnar cacti were restricted to the 1600–1800 m range, and geophytes to the 1700–1800 m range. In general, abundance of life forms was inversely associated with altitude. Multiple regression analysis did not show parameters to significantly explain the abundance of rosettes, nanophanerophytes, epiphytes, geophytes and hemiparasites; altitude and nitrogen proved significant for columnar cacti, succulents and chamaephytes; altitude, pH, electrical conductivity and nitrogen were significant for globose cacti; pH was significant for therophytes; and altitude was significant for microphanerophytes.  相似文献

Pancreatic cancer is a highly aggressive malignancy with limited treatment options. Type‐I interferons (e.g. IFN‐α/‐β) have several anti‐tumour activities. Over the past few years, clinical studies evaluating the effect of adjuvant IFN‐α therapy in pancreatic cancer yielded equivocal results. Although IFN‐α and ‐β act via the type‐I IFN receptor, the role of the number of receptors present on tumour cells is still unknown. Therefore, this study associated, for the first time, in a large panel of pancreatic cancer cell lines the effects of IFN‐α/‐β with the expression of type‐I IFN receptors. The anti‐tumour effects of IFN‐α or IFN‐β on cell proliferation and apoptosis were evaluated in 11 human pancreatic cell lines. Type‐I IFN receptor expression was determined on both the mRNA and protein level. After 7 days of incubation, IFN‐α significantly reduced cell growth in eight cell lines by 5–67%. IFN‐β inhibited cell growth statistically significant in all cell lines by 43–100%. After 3 days of treatment, IFN‐β induced significantly more apoptosis than IFN‐α. The cell lines variably expressed the type‐I IFN receptor. The maximal inhibitory effect of IFN‐α was positively correlated with the IFNAR‐1 mRNA (P < 0.05, r = 0.63), IFNAR‐2c mRNA (P < 0.05, r = 0.69) and protein expression (P < 0.05, r = 0.65). Human pancreatic cancer cell lines variably respond to IFN‐α and ‐β. The expression level of the type‐I IFN receptor is of predictive value for the direct anti‐tumour effects of IFN‐α treatment. More importantly, IFN‐β induces anti‐tumour effects already at much lower concentrations, is less dependent on interferon receptor expression and seems, therefore, more promising than IFN‐α.  相似文献

The yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) 26S proteasome consists of the 19S regulatory particle (19S RP) and 20S proteasome subunits. We detected comprehensively co‐ and post‐translational modifications of these subunits using proteomic techniques. First, using MS/MS, we investigated the N‐terminal modifications of three 19S RP subunits, Rpt1, Rpn13, and Rpn15, which had been unclear, and found that the N‐terminus of Rpt1 is not modified, whereas that of Rpn13 and Rpn15 is acetylated. Second, we identified a total of 33 Ser/Thr phosphorylation sites in 15 subunits of the proteasome. The data obtained by us and other groups reveal that the 26S proteasome contains at least 88 phospho‐amino acids including 63 pSer, 23 pThr, and 2 pTyr residues. Dephosphorylation treatment of the 19S RP with λ phosphatase resulted in a 30% decrease in ATPase activity, demonstrating that phosphorylation is involved in the regulation of ATPase activity in the proteasome. Third, we tried to detect glycosylated subunits of the 26S proteasome. However, we identified neither N‐ and O‐linked oligosaccharides nor O‐linked β‐N‐acetylglucosamine in the 19S RP and 20S proteasome subunits. To date, a total of 110 co‐ and post‐translational modifications, including Nα‐acetylation, Nα‐myristoylation, and phosphorylation, in the yeast 26S proteasome have been identified.  相似文献
