Dispersal plays an important role in the establishment and maintenance of biodiversity and, for most deep-sea benthic marine invertebrates, it occurs mainly during the larval stages. Therefore, the mode of reproduction (and thus dispersal ability) will affect greatly the biogeographic and bathymetric distributions of deep-sea organisms. We tested the hypothesis that, for bathyal and abyssal echinoderms and ascidians of the Atlantic Ocean, species with planktotrophic larval development have broader biogeographic and bathymetric ranges than species with lecithotrophic development. In comparing two groups with lecithotrophic development, we found that ascidians, which probably have a shorter larval period and therefore less dispersal potential, were present in fewer geographic regions than elasipod holothurians, which are likely to have longer larval periods. For asteroids and echinoids, both the geographic and bathymetric ranges were greater for lecithotrophic than for planktotrophic species. For these two classes, the relationships of egg diameter with geographic and bathymetric range were either linearly increasing or non-monotonic. We conclude that lecithotrophic development does not necessarily constrain dispersal in the deep sea, probably because species with planktotrophic development may be confined to regions of high detrital input from the sea surface. Our data suggest that more information is necessary on lengths of larval period for different species to accurately assess dispersal in the deep sea. 相似文献

Macroevolutionary consequences of developmental mode in temnopleurid echinoids from the Tertiary of southern Australia 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Abstract Taxonomic revision and cladistic analysis of a morphological dataset for Australian Tertiary temnopleurids resolve the phylogeny of the group and allow the testing of a series of hypotheses about the evolution of larval development and consequences of changes in development. Australian Tertiary temnopleurids encompass all three major developmental types found in marine invertebrates (planktotrophy, lecithotrophy, and brooding). Planktotrophy is plesiomorphic for this clade, and nonplanktotrophic larval development evolved independently at least three times during the Tertiary. The change to a nonplanktotrophic mode of larval development is unidirectional with no evidence of reversal. In addition, there is no evidence of an ordered transformation series from planktotrophy through planktonic lecithotrophy to brooding. In common with previous studies of other invertebrate groups, analysis of the raw data suggests that nonplanktotrophic taxa within this clade have significantly shorter species longevities, more restricted geographic ranges and higher speciation rates than taxa with planktotrophic development. However, analysis using phylogenetically independent contrasts is unable to confirm that the stratigraphic and geographic patterns are unbiased by the phylogenetic relationships of the included taxa. 相似文献

Poecilogony, a rare phenomenon in marine invertebrates, occurs when alternative larval morphs differing in dispersal potential or trophic mode are produced from a single genome. Because both poecilogony and cryptic species are prevalent among sea slugs in the suborder Sacoglossa (Gastropoda: Opisthobranchia), molecular data are needed to confirm cases of variable development and to place them in a phylogenetic context. The nominal species Alderia modesta produces long-lived, feeding larvae throughout the North Atlantic and Pacific, but in California can also produce short-lived larvae that metamorphose without feeding. We collected morphological, developmental, and molecular data for Alderia from 17 sites spanning the eastern and western Pacific and North Atlantic. Estuaries south of Bodega Harbor, California, contained a cryptic species (hereafter Alderia sp.) with variable development, sister to the strictly planktotrophic A. modesta. The smaller Alderia sp. seasonally toggled between planktotrophy and lecithotrophy, with some individuals differing in development but sharing mitochondrial DNA haplotypes. The sibling species overlapped in Tomales Bay, California, but showed no evidence of hybridization; laboratory mating trials suggest postzygotic isolation has arisen. Intra- and interspecific divergence times were estimated using a molecular clock calibrated with geminate sacoglossans. Speciation occurred about 4.1 million years ago during a major marine radiation in the eastern Pacific, when large inland embayments in California may have isolated ancestral populations. Atlantic and Pacific A. modesta diverged about 1.7 million years ago, suggesting trans-Arctic gene flow was interrupted by Pleistocene glaciation. Both Alderia species showed evidence of late Pleistocene population expansion, but the southern Alderia sp. likely experienced a more pronounced bottleneck. Reduced body size may have incurred selection against obligate planktotrophy in Alderia sp. by limiting fecundity in the face of high larval mortality rates in warm months. Alternatively, poecilogony may be an adaptive response to seasonal opening of estuaries, facilitating dispersal by long-lived larvae. An improved understanding of the forces controlling seasonal shifts in development in Alderia sp. may yield insight into the evolutionary forces promoting transitions to nonfeeding larvae. 相似文献

Interactive effects of two or more life-history traits on fitness have the potential to create suites of coadapted traits. Propagule (egg or seed) size is one such trait that is believed to have undergone coadaptation with other traits. Phylogenetic analyses of salmonid fishes have revealed an association between large eggs and semelparity, leading to the question of which came first. It has been hypothesized that an increased egg size would have increased juvenile relative to adult survival, favoring a subsequent increase in reproductive effort and eventually semelparity. Others have suggested that this is insufficient to cause a shift in parity, implying to the contrary that semelparity gave rise to larger eggs. In a previous study we showed that environmental unpredictability might select for production of larger propagules. Here we use simulations to directly model how propagule size evolves in response to environmental unpredictability with varying degrees of iteroparity. Our results demonstrate that environmental unpredictability causes pronounced propagule size divergence between iteroparous and purely semelparous species in taxa with a fixed age at maturity (e.g., pure annual species). However, even rare incidents of repeat breeding are sufficient to reduce selection for larger propagules substantially and thus divergence. Furthermore, introducing variation in age at maturity within propagule size genotypes has evolutionary effects similar to that of repeat breeding. Environmental unpredictability is thus unlikely to provide a general alternative explanation for the observed egg size divergence between iteroparous and semelparous salmonids. 相似文献

Two oceans, two taxa and one mode of development: latitudinal diversity patterns of South American crabs and test for possible causal processes 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The latitudinal gradient of species diversity is a widely recognized but poorly understood phenomenon. In marine systems, differences in dispersal abilities among species may pose an additional problem in identifying the processes that affect diversity. We compared latitudinal diversity gradients along two parallel continental coasts, the east and west coasts of South America, of two groups of Crustacea (Brachyura and Anomura), which exclusively exhibit planktonic development. We also evaluated the species‐area and the energy‐input hypotheses. Diversity decreased with increasing latitude for both groups in both oceans. Results suggest that the spatial structure of sea surface temperature (SST) explains diversity of both groups at large, but not small (< 5°), scales. Range size and latitude were not correlated. We hypothesize that SST differentially affects taxa with contrasting modes of development, influencing patterns of diversity. We suggest that developmental modes of marine organisms should be considered in future diversity analyses. 相似文献

Gross anatomical characters of all 18 species of Littorina are used to construct a phylogenetic hypothesis for the genus, by the method of cladistic analysis. The resulting cladogram suggests that of the four subgenera of Littorina, one (Littorina) is paraphyletic. It is uncertain whether the genus Mainwaringia should be included in Littorina. It is shown that the non-planktotrophic Littorina species in the northern Atlantic comprise a monophyletic group, with the sister-species L. kurila and/or L. subrotundata in the northern Pacific. Invasion of the Atlantic by a minimum of two Pacific species, across the Arctic migration route established during the late Cenozoic, is sufficient to account for the modern distribution of the subgenera Littorina and Neritrema. The importance of the cladogram as a basis for hypotheses of adaptation is illustrated by a discussion of spawn and development in Littorina. 相似文献

Population structure is not a simple function of reproductive mode and larval type: insights from tropical corals 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
1. For a wide range of organisms, heritable variation in life-history characteristics has been shown to be strongly subject to selection, reflecting the impact that variation in characters such as genotypic diversity, duration of larval development and adaptations for dispersal can have on the fitness of offspring and the make-up of populations. Indeed, variation in life-history characteristics, especially reproduction and larval type, have often been used to predict patterns of dispersal and resultant population structures in marine invertebrates. 2. Scleractinian corals are excellent models with which to test this relationship, as they exhibit almost every possible combination of reproductive mode and larval type. Some general patterns are emerging but, contrary to expectations, genetic data suggest that while populations of broadcast spawning species may be genotypically diverse they may be heavily reliant on localized recruitment rather than widespread dispersal of larvae. 3. Here we use microsatellites to test the importance of localized recruitment by comparing the genetic structure of populations of two broadcast spawning corals with contrasting modes of reproduction and larval development; Goniastrea favulus is self-compatible, has sticky, negatively buoyant eggs and larvae and is expected to have restricted dispersal of gametes and larvae. In contrast, Platygyra daedalea is self-incompatibile, spawns positively buoyant egg-sperm bundles and has planktonic development. 4. Surprisingly, spatial-autocorrelation revealed no fine-scale clustering of similar genotypes within sites for G. favulus, but showed a non-random distribution of genotypes in P. daedalea. Both species showed similar levels of genetic subdivision among sites separated by 50-100 m (F(ST) = 0.03), suggesting that larval dispersal may be equivalent in both species. 5. Interestingly, as fragmentation has been considered rare in massive corals, our sample of 284 P. daedalea colonies included 28 replicated genotypes that were each unlikely (P < 0.05) to have been derived independently from sexual reproduction. 6. We conclude that the extreme life history of G. favulus does not produce unusually fine-scale genetic structure and subsequently, that reproductive mode and larval type may not be not good predictors of population structure or dispersal ability. 相似文献

Clutch size, egg size, larval size and duration of larval period were estimated for samples of Bombina bombina and B. variegata from several populations. Bombina variegata lays fewer eggs per batch (mean 17.4) than B. bombina (mean 32.5). The volume of B. variegata eggs is 2.4 times greater and the dry weight 2.3 times greater than that of B. bombina. As a consequence, the volume of B. variegata hatchlings and their dry weight are respectively 1.9 times and 2.5 times greater than that of B. bombina. Analysis of variance showed that variation of egg size in B. variegata is significantly greater than in B. bombina. When reared under laboratory conditions freshly metamorphosed individuals of both species showed no difference in body size or weight. Although growth rates are equal, tadpoles of B. variegata reached metamorphosis 14 days earlier than B. bombina tadpoles because of differences in size of hatchlings. Differences in reproductive parameters found for the two European Bombina species can be interpreted as adaptations to contrasting environments in which they breed. 相似文献

Abstract 1. We evaluated the relation between plant‐mediated larval traits and the fitness of female bagworms, Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis Haworth (Lepidoptera: Psychidae) by sampling 29 populations of bagworms on five plant genera (Thuja, Pinus, Picea, Juniperus, and Gleditsia). 2. Compared with those on other genera of plants, female larvae on Thuja attained a larger size at pupation and developed faster. The superior quality of Thuja as a larval food plant resulted in a higher potential fitness of females, as indicated by a low level of pupal mortality and high fecundity. 3. The fecundity of females increased with pupal size on different plant genera, and the effect of host plant genus was negligible compared with pupal size. 4. The mating success of females varied among different populations (0–37% unmated females), but neither host plant, emergence time, nor the size of females had a significant influence on the proportion of mated females. 5. The conversion of adult biomass into reproductive tissue, measured as the ratio between the biomass of eggs divided by the biomass of calling females, increased with the pupal size of females and approached 90% for large females. The high rate of egg conversion in bagworms may be related to the neoteny of short‐lived females that invest little in somatic tissue. 相似文献

The evolutionary consequences of changes in landscape dynamics for the evolution of life history syndromes are studied using
a metapopulation model. We consider in turn the long-term effects of a change in the local disturbance rate, in the maximal
local population persistence, in habitat productivity, and in habitat fragmentation. We examine the consequences of selective
interactions between dispersal and reproductive effort by comparing the outcome of joint evolution to a situation where the
species has lost the potential to evolve either its reproductive effort or its dispersal rate. We relax the classical assumption
that any occupied site in the metapopulation reaches its carrying capacity immediately after recolonization. Our main conclusions
are the following: (1) genetic diversity modifies the range of landscape parameters for which the metapopulation is viable,
but it alters very little the qualitative evolutionary trends observed for each trait within this range. Although they are
both part of a competition/colonization axis, reproductive effort and dispersal are not substitutable traits: their evolution
reflects more directly the change in the landscape dynamics, than a selective interaction among them. (2) no general syndrome
of covariation between reproductive effort and dispersal can be predicted: the pattern of association between the two traits
depends on the type of change in landscape dynamics and on the saturation level. We review empirical evidence on colonizer
syndromes and suggest lines for further empirical work.

Divergent selection pressures among populations can result not only in significant differentiation in morphology, physiology and behaviour, but also in how these traits are related to each other, thereby driving the processes of local adaptation and speciation. In the Australian zebra finch, we investigated whether domesticated stock, bred in captivity over tens of generations, differ in their response to a life‐history manipulation, compared to birds taken directly from the wild. In a ‘common aviary’ experiment, we thereto experimentally manipulated the environmental conditions experienced by nestlings early in life by means of a brood size manipulation, and subsequently assessed its short‐ and long‐term consequences on growth, ornamentation, immune function and reproduction. As expected, we found that early environmental conditions had a marked effect on both short‐ and long‐term morphological and life‐history traits in all birds. However, although there were pronounced differences between wild and domesticated birds with respect to the absolute expression of many of these traits, which are indicative of the different selection pressures wild and domesticated birds were exposed to in the recent past, manipulated rearing conditions affected morphology and ornamentation of wild and domesticated finches in a very similar way. This suggests that despite significant differentiation between wild and domesticated birds, selection has not altered the relationships among traits. Thus, life‐history strategies and investment trade‐offs may be relatively stable and not easily altered by selection. This is a reassuring finding in the light of the widespread use of domesticated birds in studies of life‐history evolution and sexual selection, and suggests that adaptive explanations may be legitimate when referring to captive bird studies. 相似文献
