Activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), creatine phosphokinase (CPK), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were determined in plasma, kidney, liver, and muscle from five species of captive birds. Few differences occurred in plasma activities between sexes but considerable differences occurred between species. All five enzymes were detected in each of the tissues sampled. Relative enzyme activities in liver, kidney, and muscle were similar for each species. CPK activity was much higher in muscle than in liver or kidney and, of the five enzymes studied, may be the best indicator of muscle damage. Most of the other enzymes were more evenly distributed among the three tissues, and no organ-specific enzyme could be identified for liver or kidney. Because of interspecific variations in plasma enzyme activities, it is important to establish baseline values for each species to ensure accurate interpretation of results.  相似文献

The influence of male dominance on male-female social interactions was examined in black ducks, Anas rubripes, and mallards, A. platyrhynchos, that were raised from hatch in four different groups (male and female mallards; male and female black ducks; male mallards and female black ducks; male black ducks and female mallards). The mate preference of females, independent of the influence of male dominance, was determined by exposing females to four caged, isolated males, one from each different group. All females preferred the type of male they had been raised with since hatch. Females were then exposed to the same four males, now free-swimming, to determine how male dominance influenced the initial preference. Under these conditions, each female associated primarily with the most dominant of the four males, regardless of her initial mate preference. Mallards were the most dominant males in all tests. These results demonstrate that male dominance influences social interactions and is one factor contributing to hybridization between these two species.  相似文献

The nonmigratory and endemic Florida mottled duck (Anas fulvigula fulvigula) is facing conservation threats from the combined effects of urbanization and introgressive hybridization with feral mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and mallard x mottled duck hybrids. In the past, the status of the Florida mottled duck population was assessed during annual aerial surveys and most brown ducks (mottled ducks, mallards, and hybrids of them) detected during the survey would have been mottled ducks. But the release of domesticated mallards for aesthetic purposes has led to increases in the prevalence of mallards-hybrids (mallards or mallard x mottled duck hybrids) throughout peninsular Florida, USA, and because it is impossible to differentiate among mottled ducks, female mallards, and hybrids during aerial surveys, helicopter surveys were halted in 2009 until state researchers could conduct a range-wide study to determine what proportion of brown ducks are mottled ducks versus mallards-hybrids. We used plumage keys and high-resolution photography to categorize brown ducks from 557 wetland grid points as either mottled ducks or mallards-hybrids. Of the 5,179 brown ducks categorized, 40.1% were mottled ducks and 59.9% were mallards-hybrids. We used logistic regression analysis to model the interactive effect of a site's latitude and level of urbanization (urban gradient value within a 2-km buffer) to generate a predictive raster surface (1-km resolution) of the study area with values corresponding to the probability that a brown duck observed within a cell is a pure mottled duck. Predicted values will be used as correction factors when estimating final mottled duck population abundance from brown-duck survey data. Additionally, the predictive raster surface will be used to identify wetlands where mottled ducks remain predominant so that these sites can be targeted for preservation. Overall, mallards-hybrids outnumbered mottled ducks throughout most of peninsular Florida, especially in more urbanized regions, and their current prevalence rate presents a serious conservation threat, via hybridization, to extant mottled duck populations.  相似文献

In winter, pen-reared and wild black ducks (Anas rubripes), and game farm and wild mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), maintained on pelleted feed, were sham-dosed or given one number 4 lead shot. After 14 days, dosed birds were redosed with two or four additional lead shot. This dosing regimen also was repeated in summer using pen-reared black ducks and game farm mallards. Based upon mortality, overt intoxication, weight change, delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase activity and protoporphyrin concentration, black ducks and mallards were found to be equally tolerant to lead shot. However, captive wild ducks were more sensitive than their domesticated counterparts, as evidenced by greater mortality and weight loss following lead shot administration. This difference may be related to stress associated with captivity and unnatural diet.  相似文献

The amino-acid enzymes (aspartate-, alanine- and tyrosine transaminases, serine dehydratase, glutamate dehydrogenase, glutamine synthetase, adenylate deaminase and arginase) activities in the liver and kidney of developing rats (days 19 and 21 after conception and 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 after birth) compared with adults were determined in crude homogenates. Most enzymes attained the adult levels early after birth or at weaning, showing a marked trend towards amino-acid nitrogen conservation during late foetal and specially during the neonatal period, increasing their activity during lactation. It is postulated that these changes are closely related to availability of low grade protein in diet as well as to maturation of amino-acid homeostasis maintenance for growth.  相似文献

The significance of changes in lymph flow for the extracellular distribution and transport of cellular enzymes and for the level of enzyme activities in plasma was investigated. Specimens of thoracic duct lymph were obtained from an extracorporal lymph shunt in anaesthetized, conscious resting and treadmill exercising dogs (6 km X h-1 for 1 h) The activity of 10 enzymes and of protein content in lymph and plasma were studied, as well as lymph flow, lymphatic transport, and the lymph-plasma ratio of these compounds. Lactate, pH, and blood gases were monitored in venous blood. Lymph flow of 0.80 ml X min-1 in anaesthetized dogs more than doubled (to 1.86 ml X min-1) when the animals were conscious and resting. In anaesthetized dogs lymph enzyme activity was higher only for enzymes of predominately hepatic origin, such as choline esterase (CHE) and alanine aminoferase (ALAT), and was lower for aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT) and aldolase (ALD). In conscious dogs, due to activation of the skeletal muscle "tissue pump", lymphatic transport of enzymes with rather high activity in skeletal muscle, and of protein, is significantly enhanced. Enzyme activities in plasma, however, did not differ between the groups. Lymph-plasma activity ratios higher than one were found for lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), ASAT, creatine kinase (CK), ALD, and phosphohexose isomerase (PHI). Exercise stimulated lymph flow up to 4.9 ml X min-1, and increased the lymphatic activities of those enzymes with a lymph-plasma ratio higher than unity, these enzymes increasing in the plasma due to the highly increased lymphatic transport.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

In aerobic organisms, the use of oxygen (O(2)) to produce energy is associated with the production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), which reacts with biological molecules to produce oxidized metabolites such as malondialdehyde (MDA). This experiment focused on male Swiss mice 12 weeks of age synchronized for 3 weeks by the 12 h light (rest)/12 h dark (activity) span. Different and comparable groups of animals (n=10) were sacrificed at six different circadian stages: 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, and 21 h after light onset (HALO). The 24 h mean MDA level varied among organs of mice in non-stress conditions and was comparable in brain and liver but lower than in kidney. As the MDA 24 h status constitutes only a part of ROS damages in sites differing by their oxygen use, lipid composition, and detoxification capacity, the temporal patterns of their MDA content were comparatively studied in relationship to the animal rest-activity cycle. The results revealed significant circadian rhythms with the peak time located during the rest span (approximately =5 HALO) for both brain and liver, but during the activity span for the kidney ( approximately =21 HALO) and plasma (approximately =13 HALO). This chronobiological study showed that under physiological conditions, lipid peroxidation depends on several factors. The MDA peak/trough might be used as a tool to detect moments of high/low sensitivity of tissues to ROS attack in rodents.  相似文献

The effect of lipolytic, glycolytic and proteolytic enzymes on the activities of plasma membrane enzyme activities in rat liver and kidney has been investigated by a pretreatment of tissue sections with the lytic enzymes. 2. The action of the proteolytic enzymes causes a very strong decrease of leucyl--naphthylamidase activity, whereas the activities of ATP-ase, 5-nucleotidase and alkaline phosphatase show a lesser decrease. This indicates a different membrane anchorage of leucyl--naphthylamidase as compared to that of the phosphatases. 3. Treatment with glycolytic enzymes results in a decrease of 5-nucleotidase and ATP-ase activity, whereas liver alkaline phosphatase and leucyl--naphthylamidase show an increase in activity. 4. Treatment with phospholipase C gives about the same results. The very strong decrease of 5-nucleotidase activity indicates a great dependence on phospholipids.  相似文献

This paper describes the determination in rainbow trout of the normal levels in the plasma of eight enzymes known to be significant in animal pathology. Some relationships between plasma enzyme levels and the enzyme activities in selected tissues are discussed. For LDH which is ubiquitously distributed, we chose, by way of saturation tests, the optimum concentrations of pyruvate and NADH in the assay medium. The LDH 'isoenzyme ratio' was determined for heart tissue, liver, and white muscle. When blood was withdrawn from caudal vessels, we observed a net increase of plasma enzyme activities, mainly of CPK and LDH, which was demonstrated to originate from surrounding muscle. Thus cardiac sampling was the only suitable way of obtaining blood for this kind of study. Slightly haemolyzed blood appeared suitable for enzyme determinations except for Alk Pase which is about 50 times more concentrated in erythrocytes than in plasma. CPK was highly concentrated in the heart and the muscle, GOT was concentrated in the heart while the liver appeared to be a valuable source of GDH (as well as the kidney) and GPT.  相似文献

Macrocysts of a protozoan parasite, Sarcocystis sp., were found in 28 of 173 American black ducks (Anas rubripes) examined during winters 1984-1985, 1985-1986 and 1986-1987 in south coastal New Jersey (USA). No macrocysts were detected in 80 juvenile black ducks. In adults, the prevalence of macrocysts increased from 3% (1 of 37) in 1984-1985, to 36% (12 of 33) in 1985-1986, and 65% (15 of 23) in 1986-1987. This increase could result in a greater number of harvested birds being discarded, or a change in the attitudes of waterfowl hunters towards black ducks.  相似文献
