The engineering characteristics of the KPF-4 Phoenix megajoule Mather-type plasma focus facility constructed at the Sukhumi Physicotechnical Institute are described. Results from preliminary studies of the plasma dynamics at a capacitive-storage energy of up to 700 kJ are discussed. Future experiments in KPF-4 will be oriented at technological applications and will complement the studies carried out in the 2.8-MJ Filippovtype PF-3 plasma focus facility at the Nuclear Fusion Institute of the Russian Research Centre Kurchatov Institute. 相似文献

Magnetorotational instability of a weakly ionized accretion disk with an admixture of charged dust grains in a magnetic field with the axial and toroidal components is analyzed. The dispersion relation for perturbations perpendicular to the disk plane is derived with allowance for both the Hall current and the finite transverse plasma conductivity. It is shown that dust grains play an important role in the disk magnetic dynamics. Due to the effect of dust grains, the Hall current can reverse its direction as compared to the case of electron-ion plasma. As a result, the instability threshold shifts toward the short-wavelength range. Under certain conditions, electromagnetic fluctuations of any length can become unstable. It is established that the instability criterion for waves of any scale length is satisfied within a finite interval of the density ratio between the dust and electron plasma components. The width of this interval and the instability growth rate as functions of the plasma parameters and the configuration of the magnetic field in the disk are analyzed. 相似文献

Results are presented from measurements of the azimuthal magnetic fields within imploding multiwire tungsten arrays in the Angara-5-1 facility at currents of 2.5–4 MA. It is shown that the penetration of the magnetic field into the axial region of the wire array lags behind the discharge current pulse. The current of a precursor produced at the array axis prior to the implosion of the bulk array mass is measured. It is found that the magnetic field in the initial stage of implosion is azimuthally nonuniform. The mass distribution inside the array is calculated from the measured magnetic field. 相似文献

Allometric scaling laws have received increasing attention due to the recent theoretical advancements. However, existing evidence suggests that the scaling relationships may vary a lot without much consistency, which poses a challenge to the applicability of general theories. In this report, I demonstrate that much of the discrepancy may be an artefact caused by the limited use of methods for estimating the parameters in the allometric scaling equations. I suggest alternative procedures that can be utilized to avoid biased interpretations. The comments are largely applicable to any research that involves parameterization of equations. 相似文献

For more than a decade, Midwest Research Institute (MRI) has investigated the effects of exposure to 60 Hz electric and magnetic fields (EMF) on human physiology, performance, and biochemistry. This accumulated experience, new research directions, and limited resources made it important to design more comprehensive and operationally cost-effective exposure facilities. Here we describe the new, integrated laboratory exposure test facilities recently constructed at MRI and present data on relevant characteristics of the exposure systems. Concentric coil systems were developed to generate uniform magnetic fields within the three new exposure rooms, with rapid cancellation of the field to ambient levels in the rest of the laboratory. Control systems are fully automated, computer-based, and independent. These provide the operational flexibility needed to present fields of different magnitudes, frequencies, and polarization. The local geomagnetic field can be modulated and/or canceled, and both AC and DC fields can be presented in various combinations. Capabilities for conducting double-blind experiments with true active-sham exposure conditions were implemented using bifilar windings and applying current flow in the opposite direction for each wire in a pair. The new facilities provide a comprehensive capability for laboratory-based human research on the potential effects of exposure to AC and DC magnetic fields. 相似文献

Many biological processes, from cellular metabolism to population dynamics, are characterized by particular allometric scaling relationships between rate and size (power laws). A statistical model for mapping specific quantitative trait loci (QTLs) that are responsible for allometric scaling laws has been developed. We present an improved model for allometric mapping of QTLs based on a more general allometry equation. This improved model includes two steps: (1) use model II regression analysis to estimate the parameters underlying universal allometric scaling laws, and (2) substitute the estimated allometric parameters in the mixture-based mapping model to obtain the estimation of QTL position and effects. This model has been validated by a real example for a mouse F2 progeny, in which two QTLs were detected on different chromosomes that determine the allometric relationship between growth rate and body weight. 相似文献

Results of measurements of magnetic fields in the plasma pinching region during the compression of the deuterium plasma current sheath (PCS) at the PF-1000 plasma focus facility are presented. The fine structure of the PCS (shock wave-magnetic piston) and its variations in the course of plasma compression toward the facility axis are studied using magnetic probes and laser interferometry. The radial distributions of the plasma density and current in the PCS are compared. It is shown that, in the shock wave region, the electron density of the compressed plasma is on the order of ~1018 cm?3, whereas the PCS current is almost entirely concentrated in the magnetic piston region—a plasma layer with an electron density of less than 1015 cm?3. Efficient transportation of the current by the PCS into the axial region of the facility in discharges with a high neutron yield (Y n > 1011 neutrons/shot) is detected. It is shown that the total neutron yield is well described by the dependence Y n ≈ (1.5–3) × 1010 I p 4 , where I p is the pinch current (in MA) flowing within the region r ≤ 13 mm. 相似文献

There have been few studies on the effects of static magnetic fields at the cellular level, compared to those of extremely low frequency magnetic fields. Past studies have shown that a static magnetic field alone does not have a lethal effect on the basic properties of cell growth and survival under normal culture conditions, regardless of the magnetic density. Most but not all studies have also suggested that a static magnetic field has no effect on changes in cell growth rate. It has also been shown that cell cycle distribution is not influenced by extremely strong static magnetic fields (up to a maximum of 10 T). A further area of interest is whether static magnetic fields cause DNA damage, which can be evaluated by determination of the frequency of micronucleus formation. The presence or absence of such micronuclei can confirm whether a particular treatment damages cellular DNA. This method has been used to confirm that a static magnetic field alone has no such effect. However, the frequency of micronucleus formation increases significantly when certain treatments (e.g., X-irradiation) are given prior to exposure to a 10 T static magnetic field. It has also been reported that treatment with trace amounts of ferrous ions in the cell culture medium and exposure to a static magnetic field increases DNA damage, which is detected using the comet assay. In addition, many studies have found a strong magnetic field that can induce orientation phenomena in cell culture. 相似文献

The empirical rules relating metabolic rate and body size are described in terms of (i) a scaling exponent, which refers to the ratio of the fractional change in metabolic rate to a change in body size, (ii) a proportionality constant, which describes the rate of energy expenditure in an organism of unit mass. This article integrates the chemiosmotic theory of energy transduction with the methods of quantum statistics to propose a molecular mechanism which, in sharp contrast to competing models, explains both the variation in scaling exponents and the taxon-specific differences in proportionality constants. The new model is universal in the sense that it applies to unicellular organisms, plants and animals. 相似文献

Results from experimental studies of plasma storage in a Penning-Malmberg trap at the LEPTA facility are presented. The number of stored particles is found to increase substantially when using the so-called “rotating wall” method, in which a transverse rotating electric field generated by a cylindrical segmented electrode cut into four pairs is applied to the plasma storage region. The conditions of transverse compression of the plasma bunch under the action of the rotating field and buffer gas are studied. The optimal storage parameters are determined for these experimental conditions. Mechanisms of the action of the rotating field and buffer gas on the process of plasma storage are discussed. 相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of the implosion of wire (tungsten, aluminum, and molybdenum) and fiber (kapron) arrays at the Angara 5-1 facility at currents of up to 4 MA. The radial distributions of the azimuthal magnetic field in the stage of plasma production in such arrays are measured in detail for the first time, and the radial profiles of the current density are evaluated. The data obtained using an optical streak camera are compared with the results of measurements of the current and voltage. Current peaks have been observed and measured in electrolytic ionic current of L-glutamic acid aqueous solutions at room temperature, in static magnetic fields of 20, 40, and 60 muT flux densities, with a superimposed extremely low-frequency, (1/10) Hz, alternating magnetic field flux density of 40 nT. The distributions of the peaks have mean values centered at the cyclotron resonance frequency of the singly charged L-glutamic acid ion molecular mass in the corresponding static field. Amplitudes and widths of the peaks are compared and analyzed to extract their correlation. The results can be considered a contribution to the understanding of the experimental phenomenology in low-frequency electromagnetic fields on ionic currents of L-glutamic amino acid aqueous solutions. The results can be of interest in the studies on the interaction of the electromagnetic fields with some structural neurotransmitters in cellular medium. 相似文献

Results of experiments on the compression of tungsten wire arrays by the plasma current sheath (PCS) of the PF-3 facility at currents of up to 2 MA are presented. The efficiency of current transportation to the wire array and switching-over of the discharge current to the array were studied. Information on the penetration of the magnetic field into the wire array obtained using microprobes made it possible to compare the obtained experimental data with the results of magnetic field measurements carried out at other high-power electrophysical devices. The intensity of plasma production from tungsten wires under the action of the plasma focus PCS is estimated. The experimental results are tested against the existing models of wire array implosion with prolonged plasma production. 相似文献

A magnetic flux density (MFD) and electric-field (E-field) data-acquisition system was built for characterizing extremely low-frequency fields in residences. Every 2 min during 24-h periods, MFD and E-field measurements were made in 43 homes in King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties of Washington State. The total electrical energy used in each residence during the 24-h measurement period was also recorded, and maps were drawn to scale of the distribution wiring within 43 m (140 ft) of these homes. Finally, on a separate date, field measurements were made in each home during an epidemiological interview. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: 1) 24-h-average MFD measured at two separate points in the family room were correlated, as were a 24-h-average bedroom measurement and the mean of the two family-room measurements. 2) The 24-h-average family-room MFD and E-field measurements were uncorrelated. 3) The 24-h-average total harmonic distortions of family-room MFD and E-fields were less than about 24% and 7%, respectively. 4) Residential MFD exhibited a definite 24-h (diurnal) cycle. 5) The 24-h-average and interviewer-measured MFD were correlated. 6) Residential 24-h-average MFD were correlated with the wiring code developed by Wertheimer and Leeper. 7) An improved prediction of 24-h-average residential MFD was obtained using the total number of service drops, the distance to neighboring transmission lines, and the number of primary phase conductors. 相似文献

Many biological processes, from cellular metabolism to population dynamics, are characterized by particular allometric scaling (power-law) relationships between size and rate. Although such allometric relationships may be under genetic determination, their precise genetic mechanisms have not been clearly understood due to a lack of a statistical analytical method. In this paper, we present a basic statistical framework for mapping quantitative genes (or quantitative trait loci, QTL) responsible for universal quarter-power scaling laws of organic structure and function with the entire body size. Our model framework allows the testing of whether a single QTL affects the allometric relationship of two traits or whether more than one linked QTL is segregating. Like traditional multi-trait mapping, this new model can increase the power to detect the underlying QTL and the precision of its localization on the genome. Beyond the traditional method, this model is integrated with pervasive scaling laws to take advantage of the mechanistic relationships of biological structures and processes. Simulation studies indicate that the estimation precision of the QTL position and effect can be improved when the scaling relationship of the two traits is considered. The application of our model in a real example from forest trees leads to successful detection of a QTL governing the allometric relationship of third-year stem height with third-year stem biomass. The model proposed here has implications for genetic, evolutionary, biomedicinal and breeding research. 相似文献

This paper presents previously unobserved signals in the 1H NMR spectra of oxidized and reduced [2Fe-2S]-ferredoxin from Anabaena 7120 detected at 400, 500, and 600 MHz. The signals shifted to low field exhibited longitudinal relaxation (T1) values in the range of 100-400 microseconds and line widths in the range of 1-10 kHz (at 400 MHz), and the chemical shifts of all signals showed strong temperature dependence. Although the line widths were smaller at lower magnetic fields, the resolution was better at higher magnetic fields. In the oxidized state, a broad signal was detected at 37 ppm, which corresponds to at least 6 protons, and whose chemical shift exhibits positive temperature dependence. This signal also was found in oxidized ferredoxin reconstituted in 2H2O, which excludes the signal as arising from solvent-exchangeable amide protons. In the reduced state, four signals detected between 90 and 140 ppm exhibited negative temperature dependence. These consisted of two pairs of signals, each pair having one component with half the linewidth of the other. On the basis of their chemical shifts, linewidths, longitudinal relaxation properties, and temperature dependence we assigned these resonances to four of the beta hydrogens of the ligated cysteines. Two solvent-exchangeable hyperfine-shifted signals were found in the reduced state; these are located upfield of the diamagnetic region. The low-field hyperfine resonances of half-reduced ferredoxin in the presence of sodium dithionite showed a self electron transfer exchange rate that was slow on the NMR scale as observed earlier (Chan, T., and Markley, J. L. (1983) Biochemistry 22, 5982-5987), but the exchange rate was accelerated in the presence of methyl viologen. 相似文献

Simple scaling laws are developed for the severity and characteristic time scales of influenza A infection in man. The scaling laws are based on a model of the infection described by six coupled ordinary differential equations that describe the time courses of the numbers of infectious viral particles, activated cytotoxic T-lymphocytes, interferon molecules, infected cells, uninfected cells, and the subset of uninfected cells that are protected by interferon from viral infection. Computer simulations show that the disease can be regarded approximately as a two-stage process. In the first stage, the growth in the number of infected cells is determined primarily by the interferon-enhanced limitation in the available number of target cells. In the second stage, the bulk of the duration of the infection is determined mainly by the destruction of the infected cells by the cytotoxic T-lymphocytes. The severity and characteristic times of the infection are found to depend simply on the logarithm of the initial number of viruses. 相似文献

A method is described for evaluating electric fields induced by ELF magnetic fields into electrically inhomogeneous, low-conductivity (less than 5 S/m) structures. It is applied to cylinders and spheres, and numerical results are given for electrical properties that are representative of some tissues, or of cells embedded either in saline solution or a tissue matrix.
