Field observations on the relationship between male mating success and emergence timing in the funnel-web spider,Agelena limbata, were conducted.Agelena limbata is an annual species and adult males appear slightly earlier than adult females in July. As males deposit a copulatory plug at the female epigynum after copulation, copulation with virgin females is important to males. The number of copulations in males with virgin females, which strongly correlates with the longevity of males and the number of females that males courted, did not correlate with the emergence timing of males. Early emerged males and females were significantly larger in size than later ones, but the correlation coefficient between the emerged date and the cephalothorax width was not strong. Males that emerged earlier did not have any advantage in copulating with larger and more fecund females. Furthermore, virgin females first copulated on average 7.9 days after their final molt and the mortality rate of adult males increased after the final molt. These factors may favor the smaller degree of protandry in male emergence timing inA. limbata.  相似文献

Logistic regression analysis was used to analyse sex allocation in a population of the leaf-cutting ant Acromyrmex balzani occurring in a pasture in southern Brazil. The field sample consisted of 151 fungus-garden chambers (18 queenright and 133 queenless), belonging to 50 nests with three vertically stacked chambers per nest on average. Taking nest chamber as the unit of analysis, seven predictor variables were considered: sampling date, chamber depth, chamber volume, weight of fungus garden, presence of a queen, number of large workers, and number of small to medium workers. The population-level numerical proportion of females was 0.548 and the inferred proportional energetic investment in females 0.672. The former was not significantly different from 0.5 (P=0.168), but the latter was (P=0.0003). The proportional investment in females per fungus garden increased with the number of large workers present (P=0.0002) and decreased with the dry weight of the fungus garden (P=0.012). This implies that resource acquisition through foraging is likely to be a major proximate determinant of sex allocation. The negative correlation between female bias and fungus garden weight might be due to developing adult females requiring more food than males, but this hypothesis could not be confirmed by direct statistical evidence.  相似文献

Transmission of conidia between mates of the Asian longhorned beetle, Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), was studied using two isolates of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium brunneum Petch (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) (formerly M. anisopliae). After one beetle was inoculated and caged with a mate for 6 h, conidia were rinsed off each beetle using Tween-80 and pentane to count conidia transferred. Treated males transmitted more conidia to females than treated females transferred to males. Untreated partners did not die as quickly as their inoculated mates, but died significantly faster than controls. For beetles inoculated with ARSEF 7711, the difference in time to death between inoculated beetles and their untreated mates was shorter when males were inoculated than when females were inoculated. We hypothesize that greater conidial transmission from males to females was due to their relative positions during copulation and the prolonged post-copulatory mate-guarding characteristic of males.  相似文献

Summary The polychaeteOphryotrocha puerilis is a male-to-female sex-changer, whereasO. labronica has separate sexes throughout life. In other respects the two species are remarkably similar: they occur in the same habitat, they look the same, they eat the same things, and in someO. labronica populations sex-changers can actually be found. The size-advantage hypothesis predicts that inO. puerilis males should not benefit reproductively from a size increase as much as males inO. labronica: henceO. puerilis but notO. labronica males should change to the female sex at a certain size. I experimentally compared reproductive success at different body sizes between the two species. In isolated male-female pairs reproductive rate increased significantly with female body size but not with male body size, and this pattern was the same in both species. Hence male fecundityper se cannot account for the difference in reproductive type between the two species. In other experiments I investigated if larger males gained access to more females because they were superior competitors for mates or were preferred by females, compared to small males. InO. puerilis the combined effect of these two factors conferred no size advantage to the males, whereas inO. labronica larger males acquired more females than did smaller males. Hence interactions among males and females, in accordance with the size-advantage hypothesis, can explain why sex change is maintained inO. puerilis, and why separate sexes are maintained inO. labronica.  相似文献

The pygmy chimpanzee, or bonobo, Pan paniscus, diplays a fission-fusion social organization in which individuals associate in parties that vary in size and composition. Data from a 2-year field study of nonprovisioned P. paniscusshow that party composition varies with party size. Although females, on average, outnumber males, the proportion of males in the party increases in larger parties. This effect was not due to the greater number of known females. Both females and males will join and leave a party in the company of others, but only males appear frequently to join or leave as lone individuals. All-male parties were not observed, but all-female (nonnursery) parties were relatively common. These trends reflect greater cohesion among females than observed in P. troglodytes schweinfurthii.Cohesion between males and female P. paniscusmay increase with party size.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 Single males, single females or pairs of dung beetles, Onthophagus vacca, were released on artificial small (100 g) or large (1000 g) dung pats in the laboratory. Emigrating beetles were trapped at 12 h intervals, and the number and size of the brood chambers were recorded after each replicate.
  • 2 Emigration of males was delayed if females were present in the same dung pats, whereas emigration times of females were independent of the presence or absence of males.
  • 3 A residency of 60 h proved to be a threshold value. Females emigrating before this time did not breed, whereas those emigrating later had built at least two brood chambers.
  • 4 Females paired with males built more brood chambers than single females.
  • 5 The reproductive success of pairs was not influenced by the size of the dung pats.

In many species, males are shorter-lived than females, and, mostly anecdotally, shorter lifespan was also attributed to Daphnia males. This does not necessarily stay in accordance with the biological roles of the sexes in Daphnia. Daphnia females maximize their fitness by maximizing the number of produced offspring, which incurs costs associated with quick attainment of large body size: metabolic costs of fast growth and increased risk of predation. In contrast, Daphnia males maximize fitness by maximizing the number of fertilized females, and seem to follow the strategy that enables them to maximize the lifetime female encounter rate, which should increase with lengthening lifespan. As arguments exist both in favour and against males living longer than females, we tested for differences in physiological lifespan of Daphnia magna males and females. Although maximum observed lifespan was always equal or longer in males than in females, no statistically significant differences were found. The results indicate that Daphnia males should not be considered short-lived anymore.  相似文献

Mating and oviposition behaviors were studied inCallosobruchus subinnotatus. Copulation was most frequent during the late scotophase, 2–3 h before onset of photophase. The females were less willing to mate during photophase, which increased the time to initiate mating while decreasing the duration of mating. Females exhibited increased movement prior to mating, resting immediately after mating, and remained stationary for 6 h when oviposition commenced. Multiple mating by both males and females affected the number of eggs laid, duration of mating, and uncoupling time at the end of mating. Females that mated two or three times laid more eggs than females that mated once or more than three times. Females that remainedin copula for less than 18 min showed greater readiness to remate than those that remainedin copula longer. There was a gradual decrease in the number of eggs females could lay with an increase in the number of previous matings by males.  相似文献

Quasi-monthly samples of the Antarctic pectinid bivalve Adamussium colbecki were examined to determine the gametogenic pattern and periodicity. Both female and male gametogenic patterns show a very distinct seasonal development, with the initiation of gametogenesis in October and spawning in late September and early October of the following year. The duration of the gametogenic cycle is unusually short for Antarctic benthos, being 12 months. Reproductive effort (ratio of gonad mass to total tissue mass) is significantly higher in males than females, and males are ready to spawn earlier in the austral winter than females. The digestive gland also shows a strong seasonal cycle but develops earlier than the gonad. We propose that energy from the spring bloom is stored in the digestive gland before being transferred to the gonads. Gonad size, digestive-gland size and, to a lesser extent, adductor-muscle size, are related to adult size in most samples. The length of the gametogenic cycle suggests that reproduction in A. colbecki is more pectinid than Antarctic.  相似文献

Under dry environmental conditions the sex ratio of many dioecious plants is male-biased, which is usually explained by the higher susceptibility of females to drought stress. We investigated if spatio-temporal variation in the sex ratio ofSilene otites could be explained by the higher sensitivity of female plants to drought stress as compared to males. Long-term field observations, however, did not support this hypothesis. The sex ratio in 34 patches at the study site in Central Germany changed from slightly female biased in 1994 to strongly male-biased in 1997 and 1998. The interannual change in the proportion of plants that were female was positively correlated with the number of days with soil-water deficit in the late summer, suggesting higher mortality in males than in females under drought stress. In two closely studied patches, mortality in males was also higher than in females, although this difference could not be related to drought stress. These field observations were supported by an experiment with potted plants in two climate chambers, in which male mortality was higher during a three-week period without water supply. We conclude that the often reported male bias in patches ofS. otites is not caused by sexual differences in the sensitivity to drought stress. Field data in this study, however, suggest that maleS. otites plants flower earlier than females, which causes a shift in sex ratio to more male bias among flowering plants.  相似文献

The relative positions of the orbital and nasal openings in African apes and humans were studied by a new methodological approach based on the automatic determination, by image analysis techniques, of horizontal and vertical lines of reference. The material used consisted ofGorilla gorilla (38 males and 20 females),Pan troglodytes (19 males and 13 females), and modernHomo spaiens (51 males and 41 females). This allowed the relative positions of the orbital and nasal openings to be quantified by the determination of medio-lateral and vertical orbitonasal indices of overlap. In all the species studied, a medio-lateral orbitonasal overlap was systematically observed. This indicates that nasal breadth is always larger than interorbital distance. Medio-lateral overalp was greatest inGorilla, reduced inHomo, and intermediate inPan. By contrast, onlyHomo presents systematically a vertical overlap: a vertical overlap was sometimes observed inPan, but never inGorilla. Homo presented the greatest vertical overlap, andGorilla the least; the disposition inPan was intermediate. The interspectific study of the relationships between medio-lateral and vertical overlap inGorilla, Pan, andHomo demonstrated that an increase in veritical overlap was correlated with a decrease of medio-lateral overlap. Sexual dimorphism in orbitonasal relationships was systematically greatest inGorilla, and reduced inPan andHomo, this is also the case for the orbital, nasal, and orbitonasal parameters measured in this study. All these results provide interesting elements for understanding the morphological evolution of the middle face in hominoids.  相似文献

The relationship between the quality/quantity of male investment and the feeding behavior of females was investigated in a bruchid weevil, Bruchidius dorsalis (Fahraeus), whose males donate nutrition via seminal fluid to females. Experiments on the effect of feeding regimes of both sexes on the mating frequency of females showed that females mated at a higher frequency if given low-quality food or poor male investment. On the other hand, the experiment that examined the effect of male investment quality on female feeding behavior showed that females receiving the high-quality investment exhibited feeding behavior less often. These results suggest that male investment and feeding behavior play the same role for B. dorsalis females. These experiments also showed that there are sex-related asymmetries in mating and feeding behaviors: females mated more often but males fed more often. Moreover, a field census suggested that only males visited non-host flowers to feed on the pollen and nectar during the non-flowering period of the host plants; females always stayed on the host plants irrespective of the flowering phenology. These results suggest that in B. dorsalis courtship role reversal and sex-specific feeding modes are fairly fixed and obligatory, and that male investment, derived from sexual selection, could affect the feeding behavior and spatial distribution of both sexes, which may have far-reaching impact in various ecological contexts.  相似文献

Sex ratio and sexual dimorphism were studied in the dioecious tree Taxus baccata. We examined five populations of T. baccata in Poland and Ukraine to identify the differences between male and female individuals. The sex of all individuals, height and diameter, needle length and area, specific leaf area (SLA), the number of stomata rows, stomatal density, and content of carbon and nitrogen were measured to identify the differences between male and female individuals. The relationship between sex ratio and climatic conditions, age and population size were analysed using data collected from the field and the literature. Female trees were shorter than males, but needles of females were longer and had larger area. Although there were no differences among sexes in SLA, nitrogen and carbon concentration, we found a positive correlation between nitrogen concentration and SLA among females. The sex ratio changed with tree height within populations, and taller height classes were biased in favour of males. Regardless of population age, the percentage of females within populations was positively correlated with precipitation. Probably high reproductive effort caused female trees to lose in competition with males, and this loss may also be enhanced by lower drought tolerance in females and could contribute to risk of extinction for T. baccata. The continental geographic range of T. baccata may be restricted by limited occurrence of females, which demand higher water resources than males.  相似文献

Responses of males and females to salinity were studied in order to reveal sex‐specific adaptation and evolution in Populus cathayana Rehd cuttings. This dioecious tree species plays an important role in maintaining ecological stability and providing commercial raw material in southwest China. Female and male cuttings of P. cathayana were treated for about 1 month with 0, 75 and 150 mM NaCl. Plant growth traits, gas exchange parameters, chlorophyll pigments, intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi), membrane system injuries, ion transport and ultrastructural morphology were assessed and compared between sexes. Salt stress caused less negative effects on the dry matter accumulation, growth rate of height, growth rate of stem base diameter, total number of leaves and photosynthetic abilities in males than in females. Relative electrolyte leakage increased more in females than in males under salinity stress. Soil salinity reduced the amounts of leaf chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll, and the chlorophyll a/b ratio more in females than in males. WUEi decreased in both sexes under salinity. Regarding the ultrastructural morphology, thylakoid swelling in chloroplasts and degrading structures in mitochondria were more frequent in females than in males. Moreover, females exhibited significantly higher Na+ and Cl? concentrations in leaves and stems, but lower concentrations in roots than did males under salinity. In all, female cuttings of P. cathayana are more sensitive to salinity stress than males, which could be partially due to males having a better ability to restrain Na+ transport from roots to shoots than do females.  相似文献

With flow-through respirometry under video tracking, the CO2 release of adult male and female Pardosa lugubris (wolf spider) and Marpissa muscosa (jumping spider) was measured during rest and activity. Activity metabolism was measured in phases in which the animals were spontaneously active and during forced exercise. Standard metabolic rates (VCO2/t) were 1.43 nmol s–1 g–1 in M. muscosa and 1.7–1.8 nmol s–1 g–1 in P. lugubris. Egg production caused higher resting rates in females compared with the males in P. lugubris. Maximum mass-specific CO2 release, the additional amount of CO2 released after activity and the factorial aerobic scope were higher in M. muscosa. Additionally, half-time recovery and the lag between end of activity and maximum CO2 release were lower in the jumping spider. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that the well-developed tracheal system in jumping spiders increases the efficiency of the respiratory system in comparison with wolf spiders, which possess similarly developed lungs but only a simple tracheal system that is restricted to the opisthosoma.Communicated by G. In most species females do not exhibit conspicuous sexual behaviours and female mate preferences are often measured by means of the time spent close to males. In spite of its widespread use, in only a few studies has this measure been validated as a reliable indicator of female mate preference. Sex-role-reversed species offer a better opportunity to test female preferences, as females usually court males. We tested in a sex-role-reversed population of the blenny Salaria pavo (Risso) if the time spent by females close to males related to the number of courtship displays directed towards males, and whether these measures of female preference reliably predicted matings. Females were simultaneously presented with two males behind a glass partition and the time spent close to each male was measured. We then allowed females to have access to the males' compartments and measured the courtship behaviours performed by females towards each male and recorded with which of the males females spawned. Females spent more time close to the male that subsequently received more courtship displays, and the preferred male had a more developed head crest. However, both measures of female preference failed to predict matings. Females were often attacked by males and probably had, in some occasions, to spawn with the less preferred male. Females that spawned with the previously preferred male had more swollen bellies than females that spawned with the less preferred male, suggesting a male preference towards more ripe females. These results validate the use of "time spent close to a sexual partner" as a measure of female preference in S. pavo. We argue that matings may not always reliably indicate mate preferences, particularly in the less choosy sex.Communicated by R. Serrão Santos  相似文献

InDrosophila montana andD. littoralis (species of theD. virilis group), females use male courtship song in their mate choice in wild preferring males which produce short and dense sound pulses (Aspi and Hoikkala, 1995). In the present study these song characters were found to be repeatable among overwintered males. Male progenies of wild-caught flies reared in the laboratory, and inD. montana also the males collected in wild before overwintering, exhibited very little variation between males in these characters. Contrary to pulse characters, pulse train characters measured forD. montana song varied significantly between laboratory-reared males. Our findings suggest that inD. montana andD. littoralis song characters playing a part in sexual selection in the wild are more condition dependent than song characters which are not the direct targets of female choice.  相似文献

Eighteen adult skeletons ofLoris tardigradus lydekkerianus (4 males and 4 females) andNycticebus coucang (6 males and 4 females) have been studied for the asymmetries in the long bones of the limbs and of the clavicles. The bones of the upper extremity are longer in the right inLoris andNycticebus. Asymmetry favours the right side more inLoris than inNycticebus regarding the thigh bone and the total length of the lower extremity. Lorises do not essentially differ from the other primates including man, regarding the asymmetries of the lower extremities as they do in regard to the asymmetries of the upper extremities.Averages of the percentage asymmetries are higher in females than in males. Cases of symmetry are rarer in clavicles (0%) than in the other bones of the upper and lower extremities ofLoris andNycticebus but they do favour radius inNycticebus (45%) alone. There are no significant sex differences in the 2 series in the distribution of the asymmetries. The average of the degrees in which the lengths of the corresponding limb bones are unequal on the 2 sides of the body are approximately the same inLoris (0.78),Hylobatidae (0.70) and the great apes (0.72) with regard to the upper extremities. In the lower extremities, however, these degrees including those in man (0.63) and the macaque (0.61), excepting inHylobatidae (0.86) are practically the same as inNycticebus (0.61) while much higher than those inLoris (0.43).This investigation forms a part of the main research programme based on the anatomical and metrical data, on the Indian Lorises, conducted under the aegis of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi, during the years 1962–65.This paper was presented before the section of Anthropology and Archaeology of the Indian Science Congress Association at its 54th annual session held at Hyderabad in January 3–9, 1967.  相似文献

Repeated matings offset costs of reproduction in female crickets   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Summary Courtship food gifts can be a significant source of nutrition to females and costly for males to produce; hence, costs of reproduction should be reduced for multiple-mating females and increased for multiplemating males in a gift-giving species. We tested this hypothesis by experimentally manipulating mating opportunities of males and females of two cricket species,Gryllodes sigillatus, a gift-giving species andGryllus veletis, a non-gift-giving species. Females of both species consume the externally attached spermatophore after mating, but inG. sigillatus, the sperm-containing ampulla is accompanied by a large gelatinous spermatophylax. In both species, survival of mated females given limited access to males was reduced relative to virgin females, thus suggesting a cost of reproduction to females. However, females given unlimited mating opportunities lived as long as virgins and also produced significantly more offspring than limited-access females. These results suggest that benefits of repeated matings, particularly those arising through spermatophore consumption, offset costs of reproduction in females. Lack of a treatment by species interaction suggests that females of both species derive nutritional benefits through spermatophore consumption, and that any additional advantage to the consumption of the spermatophylax inG. sigillatus is offset by more frequent mating byG. veletis females. In contrast to females, varying mating opportunities had no effect on male survival, suggesting that mating effort is not very costly to males. Male survival increased linearly with body mass but only when males were food-deprived, suggesting that larger males possess greater initial energy reserves to sustain their longevity when food-stressed.  相似文献

Host-searching and mating in an outbreeding parasitoid wasp   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Abstract.
  • 1 Female parasitoid wasps (Hymenoptera) must search for hosts to reproduce, but only require mates if their broods are to contain female progeny. In outbreeding species, females locate mates after dispersal from the emergence site. Unmated females may therefore face a trade-off between searching for hosts and searching for mates, if hosts and mates are spatially separated.
  • 2 In the outbreeding parasitoid Bracon hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), males and females are spatially segregated in the field. Females are found primarily below the surface of stored corn where they search for hosts, whereas males are found on or above the surface.
  • 3 Wasps placed in laboratory observation chambers designed to mimic B.hebetor's stored corn habitat distributed themselves in a manner consistent with field observations. Males remained on the surface of the grain, whereas females moved below the surface to attack hosts.
  • 4 In the laboratory, female distribution was influenced by their mating status, the presence of males or hosts, and female age. Virgin females were more reluctant to move into the corn than were mated females, younger females foraged deeper than older females, and all females moved deeper into the com when males were present.
  • 5 10% of all females did not mate even when males were present in the chambers, a percentage consistent with previous observations from the field. If B.hebetor faces a trade-off between host-searching and mate-searching, the trade-off seems to be part of 'split sex ratio strategies', with some females remaining constrained to producing only male offspring.
