The environmental and body temperatures of two groups of elderly women have been measured. One group was living in a local authority home (L.A.H.) and the others in their own homes in North London. The L.A.H. provided a constant environmental temperature which was at all times higher than that of the private houses. In the latter group the ambient temperature was higher in bed-sitting rooms than in houses with separate living rooms and bedrooms.Body temperatures in summer were similar throughout both groups. In winter the skin and mouth temperatures of the subjects living independently were lower than those in the L.A.H.Four subjects who had low mouth temperatures measured during two consecutive winters did not prove to have lowered deep body temperatures. The diet of these four subjects was similar in respect of all nutrients to that found in other groups of subjects of the same age, and in relation to published dietary standards was adequate in all respects.  相似文献

The present study monitored daily and seasonal variations of rectal temperature in response to different environmental temperatures in alpacas bred in the Italian Apennines at 300 m a.s.l. In each season, the rectal temperature of 33 clinically healthy alpacas was measured three times/day (morning, midday, afternoon). Ambient temperatures were also recorded. Rectal temperatures ranged from a minimum value of 35.1 to a maximum of 39.4°C, with a maximum daily thermal excursion (ΔTrec) of 3.2°C. Temperatures increased throughout the day, with highly significant differences recorded in both young and adult animals between all the time bands (P < 0.001). These differences were particularly dramatic for adults in summer, when the mean rectal temperature in the morning was 36.3 ± 0.13°C, probably as a consequence of recent shearing. Significant ΔTrec differences were recorded depending on the season in both young and adult animals (P < 0.001), with the highest ΔTrec values recorded in summer (although the highest daily ambient excursion value was recorded in winter). In conclusion, similarly to alpacas bred in their natural environment, alpacas bred in Italy show a wide thermal neutrality zone, which is probably an adaptive response, that allows the animals to save energy. In the Italian Apennines, in order to prevent situations of hypothermia, with possible detrimental effects on alpacas’ health and welfare, shearing should be carried out only in warm seasons.  相似文献

In the deserts of northern and southern Africa, respectively, ants of the genera Cataglyphisf oerster (Formicinae) and Ocymyrmexe mery (Myrmicinae) occupy the same ecological niche, which comprises that of a strictly diurnal thermophilic scavenger. Their daily foraging activities exhibit a bimodal pattern in summer and unimodality or complete inactivity in winter. The present study investigates whether these overall patterns are a result of endogenous annual activity rhythms of the colony or are triggered directly by the prevailing ambient temperatures. By exploiting various seasonal temperature regimes and, in particular, by creating near‐nest winter conditions experimentally in summer, it is shown that the latter hypothesis is generally true. However, there are daily and annual variations in the temperature set points at which foraging activities start and finish. These temperatures are lower in the winter than in the summer months and, in summer, they are lower in the morning than in the afternoon. The level of foraging activity in the afternoon reaches maximum values at surface temperatures of 60–63 °C. This means that, in summer months, these thermophilic ants concentrate their foraging activities into a period of almost lethal temperature regimes, during which they have to devote a substantial portion of their time outside the nest to respite (i.e. cooling‐off) behaviour.  相似文献

Effects of season on sleep and skin temperature in the elderly   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The effects of season on sleep and skin temperature (Tsk) in 19 healthy, elderly volunteers were investigated. Measurements were obtained in summer, winter, and fall, and activity levels were monitored using a wrist actigraph system for five consecutive days. The temperature and humidity of the bedrooms of the subjects’ homes were measured continuously for five days. During actigraphic measurement, Tsk during sleep was measured for two nights. The bedroom temperature and humidity significantly increased in summer compared to winter and fall. In summer, the total sleep time decreased (mean ± SE min; summer, 350.8 ± 15.7; winter, 426.5 ± 14.2; fall, 403.2 ± 16.4) and wakefulness increased (P < 0.003) compared to those in fall or winter. The sleep efficiency index that was derived from wrist actigraphy was significantly decreased (P < 0.001) in summer (81.4 ± 2.9%) compared with winter (91.6 ± 1.3%) or fall (90.2 ± 1.2%). The forehead Tsk significantly increased, while the chest and thigh Tsks were decreased in summer compared to those in fall or winter. These results suggest that, in the elderly, sleep is disturbed in summer more than in other seasons, and that this disturbance is related to fluctuations in Tsk.  相似文献

Physiological functions are impaired in various organs in aged people, as manifest by, e.g., renal and cardiac dysfunction and muscle atrophy. The elderly are also at increased risk of both hypothermia and hyperthermia in extreme temperatures. The majority of those over 65 years old have elevated serum osmolality. Our hypothesis is that the elderly have suppressed osmolality control in different seasons compared to the young. Eight healthy young men and six healthy older men participated in this study. The experiments were performed during spring, summer, autumn and winter in Japan, with average atmospheric temperatures of 15–20°C in spring, 25–30°C in summer, 15–23°C in autumn and 5–10°C in winter. Each subject immersed his lower legs in warm water at 40°C for 30 min. Core (tympanic) temperature and sweat rate at chest were recorded continuously. Blood was taken pre-immersion to measure the concentrations of antidiuretic hormone, serum osmolality, plasma renin activity, angiotensin II, aldosterone, leptin, thyroid stimulating hormone, fT3 and fT4. The results suggested that the elderly have suppressed osmolality control compared to the young; osmolality was especially elevated in winter compared to the summer in elderly subjects. Therefore, particularly in the elderly, balancing fluid by drinking water should be encouraged to maintain euhydration status in winter.  相似文献

Leaf movements of bush bean plants were studied at the relatively low photon flux density of 0.2 mmol/m2 per s, and air temperatures of 25° and 35° C in a growth chamber. A beta-ray gauge system was used to monitor continuously pulvinus water status and bending. Leaf angles were below the horizontal and were linearly related to the soil water content (R≥−0.91 at 25° C and R≥−0.93 at 35° C). The beta-ray transmission maxima coincided with the stem temperature minima in darkness and vice versa when brightness prevailed as the growth chamber temperature varied with the photoperiod. Leaf angle increased linearly with increased beta-ray transmission. The Q10 temperature coefficient, a measure of the metabolic energy requirement for leaf movement between 25° and 35° C was estimated at 1.8, and the corresponding mean Arrhenius constant at 423 kJ/mol for bush bean. Rock hyrax (Procavia capensis) are faced with large daily fluctuations in ambient temperature during summer and winter. In this study, peritoneal body temperature of free-living rock hyrax was investigated. During winter, when low ambient temperatures and food supply prevail, rock hyrax maintained a lower core body temperature relative to summer. In winter body temperatures during the day were more variable than at night. This daytime variability is likely a result of body temperatures being raised from basking in the sun. Body temperatures recorded during winter never fell to low levels recorded in previous laboratory studies. During summer ambient temperatures exceeded the thermoneutral zone of the rock hyrax throughout most of the day, while crevice temperatures remained within the thermoneutral zone of rock hyrax. However, in summer variation in core body temperature was small. Minimum and maximum body temperatures did not coincide with minimum and maximum ambient temperatures. Constant body temperatures were also recorded when ambient temperatures reached lethal limits. During summer it is likely that rock hyrax select cooler refugia to escape lethal temperatures and to prevent excessive water loss. Body temperature of rock hyrax recorded in this study reflects the adaptability of this animal to the wide range of ambient temperatures experienced in its natural environment.  相似文献

Evaluation of mean skin temperature formulas by infrared thermography   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
To study the reliabiliity of formulas for calculating mean skin temperature (T sk), values were computed by 18 different techniques and were compared with the mean of 10,841 skin temperatures measured by infrared thermography. One hundred whole-body infrared thermograms were scanned in ten resting males while changing the air temperature from 40° C to 4° C. Local, regional average and mean skin temperatures were obtained using an image processing system. The agreement frequency, defined as the percentage of the calculated T sk values which agreed with the corresponding infrared thermographic T sk within ±0.2° C, ranged for with the various formulas from 7% to 80%. In many sites, the local skin temperature did not coincide with the regional average skin temperature. When the local skin temperatures which showed the highest percentage similarity to the regional average skin temperature within ±0.4° C were applied to the formula, the agreement frequency was markedly improved for all formulas. However, the agreement frequency was not affected by changing the weighting factors from specific constants to individually measured values of regional surface area. By applying the physiologically reliable accuracy range of ±0.2° C in the moderate and ±0.4° C in the cool condition, agreement frequencies of at least 95% were observed in formulas involving seven or more skin temperature measurement sites, including the hand and foot. We conclude that calculation of a reliable mean skin temperature must involve more than seven skin temperature measurement sites regardless of ambient temperature. Optimal sites for skin temperature measurement are proposed for various formulas. Received: 2 December 1996 / Accepted: 25 June 1997  相似文献

Locomotor activity rhythms of the Japanese newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster, were recorded under a semi-natural condition using phototransistor systems. The daily activity rhythm showed a seasonal change: the locomotor activity was mainly diurnal (active during the daytime) from spring to early summer; mainly nocturnal (active during the night-time) from summer to autumn; and showed either a diurnal or nocturnal pattern, depending on the ambient temperature, in winter. To analyze the daily activity in detail, we observed the behavior of a group of newts (three males, three females) throughout 24 h. Four types of behavior (respiration, feeding, mating, and resting on the land) were observed. Each behavior had daily rhythms and showed a seasonal change. The behavior on land showed mainly a nocturnal or bimodal pattern (activity rhythms with two peaks) throughout the year and was more frequently observed in summer. Mating behavior also showed a seasonal change: high activity in spring, with peaks in the early morning and evening, but no activity in summer. Except in winter, feeding and respiratory behavior showed no seasonal changes in either activity period or frequency. Coupling between behavior and the clock seems to be weak in the Japanese newt because of indistinct daily rhythms and frequent phase changes of locomotor activity in water. Physical factors such as humidity and temperature seem to affect strongly the daily activity of the newts. Received: 21 April 1997 / Accepted: 1 September 1997  相似文献

This study evaluated the influence of a neutral vs. a moderately warm environment on the diurnal variation in muscular power. Twelve male subjects [27.0 (±4) years] performed two different jump tests [a squat jump (SJ) and a counter-movement jump (CMJ)] and a brief maximal sprint on cycle ergometer (CS) in four different conditions (morning/neutral, morning/moderately warm and humid, afternoon/neutral, and afternoon/moderately warm and humid). The morning experiments were conducted between 07:00 and 09:00 h, and the afternoon experiments were conducted between 17:00 and 19:00 h. The mean laboratory temperatures and humidity were 20 (±1)°C, 70 (±5)% and 29 (±1)°C, 57 (±4)% for the neutral and moderately warm and humid conditions, respectively. Rectal temperature and leg skin temperature were significantly dependent on both time-of-day and ambient temperature. An interaction effect (P < 0.05) was noted between time-of-day and ambient temperature for the power developed for the CMJ, the SJ, and half of a pedal revolution during the cycling sprint. In summary, (i) the same subjects were influenced by time-of-day differently, depending on the ambient temperature during testing; (ii) time-of-day affected muscular performance only in the neutral condition, (iii) the moderately warm and humid condition blunted the diurnal variation in muscular performance, and (iv) the effect of the ambient temperature was dependent on time-of-day.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to confirm the effects of ADL (Activity of Daily Living) and gender on circadian rhythms of the elderly in a nursing home. Twenty-one elderly volunteers, aged over 65 years, were divided in four groups depending on their ADL and gender: subjects with almost no problem in ADL (H males, H females) and those who were almost bedridden (L males, L females). Oral temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, time of sleep and wake, subjective sleepiness, overall feeling and vitality were measured every 4 hours during the day continuously for six days. The circadian rhythm was calculated by using the least squares fit of cosine function. Subjective sleep quality was also surveyed. In the sleep/wake rhythm, the mesor was significantly higher in L males compared to the other groups and the amplitude was significantly lower in L females compared to other groups. The subjective sleepiness was higher in L males compared to the other groups and L females showed a higher sleepiness compared to H females. No significant difference among the group was observed in subjective sleep quality. In conclusion, these results indicate that the subjective sleepiness and sleep/wake rhythm differ depending on ADL and gender, although no significant difference was observed in physiological parameters. ADL and gender based difference in subjective sleepiness and sleep/wake rhythm should be taken into account with regard to the care of the elderly in nursing homes.  相似文献

In winter, summer, spring and fall, groups of 200 g Sprague Dawley male rats were kept for 14 days at constant Ta 28°C±°C and LD 12:12(07:00–19:00 h). They were fed a laboratory chow (P) or a semi-purified diet (H). They were weighed at 0, 7 and 14 days. Cold resistance was determined by the fall in rectal temperature during 4 hours of restrained exposure to +1°C either in the morning (09:00 – 13:00 h) or in the afternoon (14:00 – 18:00 h). Rats fed the H diet could better tolerate cold exposure in the morning than in the afternoon, whereas the chow-fed rats were more vulnerable and became severely hypothermic both in morning and afternoon. The greater morning resistance provided by the H diet was evident in summer and winter but not in spring or fall. With both diets, cold resistance as well as growth decreased during spring and fall. Frozen storage of the diets and the water for use during other seasons showed that the nutrients per se were not a factor in the observed seasonal cycle. Although humidity in the 28°C room varied between a minimum of 26.5% in April to a maximum of 44.3% in August, it was not a statistically significant factor in the growth cycle. Arguments are presented to rule out relative humidity as a significant factor in the seasonal variation in the degree of cold resistance. A significant correlation was found for growth and cold resistance with geomagnetic activity.NRCC # 17310  相似文献

Two large-scale surveys of body temperatures in elderly people living at home were carried out in the winter of 1972. Most of the homes visited were cold with room temperatures below the minimum recommended by the Department of Health. Deep body temperatures below 35·5°C were found in 10% of those studied, and the difference between the skin temperature and the core temperature was also reduced in this group. Such individuals are at risk of developing hypothermia since they show evidence of some degree of thermoregulatory failure. Further research is needed, but meanwhile there are practical measures that could be taken to reduce the risk of hypothermia in the elderly.  相似文献

Little is known about how animals from tropical and subtropical climates adjust their energy expenditure to cope with seasonal changes of climate and food availability. To provide such information, we studied the thermal physiology, torpor patterns and energetics of the nocturnal blossom-bat (Syconycteris australis 18 g) from a subtropical habitat in both summer and winter. In both seasons, S. australis frequently entered daily torpor at ambient temperatures between 12 and 25°C when food and water were withheld. Unlike patterns observed in temperate animals, mean minimum metabolic rates during torpor were lower in summer (0.47 ± 0.07 ml O2 g−1 h−1) than in winter (0.75 ± 0.11 ml O2 g−1 h−1). Body temperatures during torpor were regulated at 19.3 ± 1.0°C in summer and at 23.4 ± 2.0°C in winter. Torpor bout duration was significantly longer in summer (7.3 ± 0.6 h) than in winter (5.5 ± 0.3 h), but in both seasons, bout duration was not affected by ambient temperature. Consequently, average daily metabolic rates were also significantly lower in summer than in winter. Body temperatures and metabolic rates in normothermic bats did not change with season. Our findings on seasonal changes of torpor in this bat from the subtropics are opposite to those made for many species from cold climates which generally show deeper and longer torpor in winter and are often entirely homeothermic in summer. More pronounced torpor in subtropical S. australis in summer may be due to low or unpredictable nectar availability, short nights which limit the time available for foraging, and long days without access to food. Thus, the reversed seasonal response of this subtropical bat in comparison to temperate species may be an appropriate response to ecological constraints.   Diurnal changes in titratable acidity, photosynthesis, energy dissipation activity, and the carotenoid composition of differently oriented cladodes of the cactus Opuntia macrorhiza were characterized during exposure to full sunlight in the field. Four cladode faces were chosen such that each was exposed to maximum photon flux densities (PFD) at different times of the day in addition to receiving different daily integrated PFDs. The sum of all carotenoids per chlorophyll was found to increase with increasing exposure to PFD, with the carotenoids of the xanthophyll cycle present in the most exposed face at more than twice the concentration found in the least exposed face. All faces exhibited large increases in xanthophyll cycle-dependent energy dissipation as the sun rose in the morning, even those receiving only minimal levels of diffuse radiation. The transient high levels of energy dissipation in those faces that did not receive direct sunlight in the morning may have been due to low temperature inhibition of photosynthesis (predawn low of 2°C). For the two faces receiving peak PFDs in the morning hours (north and east faces), the level of energy dissipation activity increased rapidly during exposure to direct sunlight in the early morning, gradually declining in the late morning under warm temperatures, and was negligible during the afternoon low light conditions. Changes in the xanthophyll cycle paralleled the changes in energy dissipation with the majority of the cycle present as violaxanthin (V) prior to sunrise, largely de-epoxidized to zeaxanthin (Z) and antheraxanthin (A) during exposure to direct sunlight, and reconverted to V during the afternoon. For the two faces receiving peak PFDs in the afternoon (south and west faces), energy dissipation activity increased dramatically during the early morning low light period, subsequently decreasing during midday as decarboxylation of malic acid proceeded maximally (providing a high concentration of CO2 for photosynthesis), and then increased to the highest level in the late afternoon as the supply of malic acid was depleted and rates of photosynthetic electron transport declined. The xanthophyll cycle, largely present as Z and A prior to sunrise in the south and west faces, was de-epoxidized to the greatest extent in the late afternoon, followed by epoxidation back to the predawn level by sunset. In all cladode faces high levels of energy dissipation activity were accompanied by decreases in the intrinsic efficiency of photosystem II (PSII), indicative of a regulatory process that diverted the excess energy away from the reaction centers during periods of excess light. Furthermore, the overnight retention of Z and A by the south and west faces was accompanied by a sustained reduction in PSII efficiency (i.e., “photoinhibition”). We suggest that this “photoinhibition” represents the sustained engagement of nocturnally retained Z and A in the photoprotective down-regulation of PSII. Access to an evaporative cooling system can increase production in dairy cows because of improved thermal comfort. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of ambient temperature on thermoregulation, plasma cortisol, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-I), and productive status, and to determine the efficiency of an evaporative cooling system on physiological responses under different weather patterns. A total of 28 Holstein cows were divided into two groups, one with and the other without access to a cooling system with fans and mist in the free stall. The parameters were analyzed during morning (0700 hours) and afternoon milking (1430 hours) under five different weather patterns throughout the year (fall, winter, spring, dry summer, and rainy summer). Rectal temperature (RT), body surface temperature (BS), base of tail temperature (TT), and respiratory frequency (RF) were lower in the morning (P?<?0.01). The cooling system did not affect RT, and both the groups had values below 38.56 over the year (P?=?0.11). Cortisol and IGF-I may have been influenced by the seasons, in opposite ways. Cortisol concentrations were higher in winter (P?<?0.05) and IGF-I was higher during spring-summer (P?<?0.05). The air temperature and the temperature humidity index showed positive moderate correlations to RT, BS, TT, and RF (P?<?0.001). The ambient temperature was found to have a positive correlation with the physiological variables, independent of the cooling system, but cooled animals exhibited higher milk production during spring and summer (P?<?0.01).  相似文献

The present study aimed to evaluate the utility of the activities of daily living (ADL) index for partially dependent elderly people (ADL-PDI) when applied longitudinally to an institutionalized partially dependent (PD) group, and to determine the characteristics of the longitudinal change in ADL ability of the PD group. The subjects were ten Japanese PD living at welfare institutions for the aged such as accredited nursing homes and health facilities (mean age was 82.2 +/- 2.32 years in total; 84.3 +/- 4.18 years for five males; 80.3 +/- 2.33 years for five females). The questionnaire consisted of the ADL-PDI, the Barthel index (BI), physical independence, dementia independence, anamnesis, body impairments, use of assisting devices, the institutionalized period, and type of medical rehabilitation and medical treatment, and was administered to the subjects twice during their institutionalized period. All testers were staff working at the subjects' institution, such as occupational therapists, physiotherapists and nurses. The result of the longitudinal ADL assessment was that ADL-PDI may evaluate the longitudinal change in ADL ability on a unidimensional scale. The utility of the standard for discriminating the functional level of the elderly using the ADL-PDI score, which was indicated in our previous study (Sato et al., 2001), was supported by longitudinal data. Furthermore, the BI was superior to the ADL-PDI in evaluating the disabled elderly with lower functional levels. However, the ADL-PDI was better than the BI in evaluating the disabled elderly with a higher functional level and was considered to have wider applications in evaluating the ADL ability of the elderly.  相似文献

Temperature dependent changes in the mode of energy metabolism and in acid-base status were studied in the range from −1.7 to 26 °C in two populations of Arenicola marina collected in summer as well as in winter from intertidal flats of the North Sea (boreal) and the White Sea (subpolar). Extreme temperatures led to an accumulation of anaerobic end products, indicating the existence of both a low and a high critical temperature, beyond which anaerobic metabolism becomes involved in energy production. In summer animals from the North Sea the high critical temperature was found at temperatures above 20 °C, and the low critical temperature below 5 °C. Latitudinal or seasonal cold adaptation lead to a more or less parallel shift of both high and low critical temperature values to lower values. Between critical temperatures intracellular pH declined with rising temperature. Slopes varied between −0.012 and −0.022 pH- units/°C. In summer animals from the North Sea, the slope was slightly less than in White Sea animals, but differences appeared independent of the season. However, slopes were no longer linear beyond critical temperatures. A drop in intracellular pH at low temperatures coincided with the accumulation of volatile fatty acids in the body wall tissue of North Sea animals. A failure of active pHi adjustment is held responsible for the reduced ΔpHi/ΔT at temperatures above the high critical temperature. Extracellular pH was kept constant over the whole temperature range investigated. The ability of North Sea animals to adapt to temperatures beyond the critical temperature is poor compared to White Sea specimens. The larger range of temperature fluctuations at the White Sea is seen as a reason for the higher adaptational capacity of the subpolar animals. A hypothesis is proposed that among other mechanisms critical temperature values are set by an adjustment of mitochondrial density and thus, aerobic capacity. Accepted: 20 August 1996  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the diurnal variation in core temperature in aluminium shift-workers exposed to hot ambient conditions. Core temperature was continuously recorded via an ingestible radio-telemetry thermistor in 29 shift-workers. Data from the morning, afternoon and night shifts were aggregated for each participant to obtain 24-h recordings during work duties. Complete data were obtained from 10 participants. Results showed that body core temperatures recorded in the afternoon (from 12:00 h to 20:00 h) were significantly higher (P<0.05) than in the late evening, night and early morning (from 21:00 h to 08:00 h). In addition, core temperature displayed a circadian variation with a mesor of 37.45 (±0.19) °C, an amplitude of 0.23 (±0.12) °C and an acrophase at 16:36 h (±3:37 h). The peak values of core temperature recorded at each hour of the day on the work site followed the same pattern with an acrophase in the early afternoon. In summary, our data showed that shift-workers present higher core temperatures in the afternoon than in the morning or during the night. In addition, it was not the work duration but the hour-of-day that triggered the variation in core temperature. This result partly explains previous observations that workers under heat stress have a higher probability of heat illness during daytime shifts than during the night shift, and suggests that special care should be given to the afternoon shift and to the end of the morning shift.  相似文献
