Summary Evidence of root nodulation and N2 fixation byParasponia parviflora Miq. found earlier by Akkermanset al. 1, 2 was confirmed, although with a lower value for N2 fixation. In contrast to the above-mentioned investigation, theParasponia trees examined in the present study were growing under natural conditions.The evidence giving by Akkermanset al. 1, 2, that Trinick's Trema is aParasponia species was confirmed by cytological and structural studies of Parasponia root nodules, which resembled closely the Trema root nodules of Trinick19. Moreover, evidence was obtained thatTrema cannabina Lour. growing in natural habitat on Java and two imported, hitherto unexamined,Trema species (T. micrantha andT. guineensis) bore no root nodules.Isolates fromParasponia parviflora root nodules produced effective root nodules both in sterile Parasponia seedlings and sterileVigna unguiculata (cowpea) andMacroptilium atropurpureum plants confirming their identity as Rhizobium.  相似文献

The regeneration of canopy and subeanopy species in a mid-elevation, primary rain forest in the Coastal Range of Isla de Chiloé (42°30S), in the cold-temperate region of Chile, was studied by comparing seedling and sapling abundances under the forest canopy, and within 36 tree-fall gaps. The forest was dominated byAmomyrtus luma andLaurelia philippiana (33 and 32% of the main canopy individuals), and two subcanopy species (Myrceugenia ovata, andMyrceugenia planipes) were also important. Uncommon species in the canopy wereDrimys winteri, Amomyrtus meli, andRaphithamnus spinosus. Tree-fall gaps were created generally by the fall of several trees, and the main canopy species were the principal gap-makers. Gap sizes varied between 28 and 972 m2, with a mean of 197 m2. Seedling and sapling abundances indicate that the dominant species are capable of regenerating below the canopy, but they also germinate and show enhanced growth within small light gaps. For one of the common subcanopy species (M. planipes) and the two infrequent canopy species (D. winteri, andA. meli) regeneration seems to depend entirely on tree-fall gaps. Thus, in this forest, light gaps allow the persistence of infrequent canopy species, but seem less important for the regeneration and maintenance of dominant canopy species.  相似文献

To study the influence of gap structure and bamboo species on the regrowth of montane Atlantic forest, colonization by plants was characterized in 30 treefall gaps (30.3–500.5 m2). The study was conducted at Santa Virgínia (45°30 W, 23°17 S), a 4970-ha reserve of Atlantic montane forest in southeastern Brazil. Area covered by bamboos ranged from 0% to 100% of gap area. Average height of surrounding canopies ranged from 12 to 30 m. As gap are covered by bamboo and average height of surrounding canopies increased, both density and richness of pioneer woody species decreased. Density and richness of shade-tolerant species were negatively influenced by gap area. Low-light-demanding species of Miconia, Leandra and Rapanea accounted for the majority of both pioneer species and individuals sampled, whereas high-light demanding pioneers of Cecropia, Alchornea and Tibouchina were poorly represented. We suggest that in the Atlantic montane forest bamboo species compete for gaps, excluding other light-demanding pioneers. This results in an overall reduction of pioneer species richness in the Atlantic forest.  相似文献

Three pioneer tree species —Salix humboldtiana, Cecropia latiloba, Senna reticulata — form monospecific stands in the Central Amazonian white-water flood plain. In contrast toterra firma forests where species composition is unpredictable even for pioneer species, in Central Amazonianvárzea the occurrence of the main colonizing species seems to be predictable. This predictability is linked to characteristic habitat conditions and the low number of pioneer species. This preference for different habitats is reflected by different germination and early growth, by the structural and physiological characteristics, as well as by the reproductive and morphological adaptations of the three main species. The germination rate was above 90% in all species, and the duration until germination ranged between one day inSalix and 14 days inCecropia. Stem elongation was more than 10 cm per month inSalix andCecropia, and about 50 cm per month inSenna. Wood specific gravity ranged from 0.33 g cm−3 inCecropia to 0.45 g cm−3 inSenna. The annual wood increment increased by 1.20 (Cecropia), 1.23 (Salix) to 2.14 cm per year (Senna). All species produced adventitious roots, lenticels and/or stem hypertrophy. Leaf photosynthesis was between 17 and 20 μmol m−2s−1, and reached a maximum of 30 μmol m−2s−1 inSenna. Flowering and fruiting inSalix occurred throughout the year, whereas inCecropia andSenna they were concentrated in the flooded period.Salix humboldtiana occurs mainly at low sites subjected to long periods of inundation and high sedimentation rates. OnceSalix has formed dense forest stands, sedimentation and water currents are reduced at these sites andCecropia latiloba may take over. This species grows on low to middle elevations in the flooding gradient at sites with lower current and sedimentation rates.Senna reticulata does not tolerate submergence and colonizes habitats that may have strong currents and high sedimentation on higher levels in the flooding gradient.  相似文献

Summary A method was devised to isolate mutants carrying deletions through several genetic loci (chlD + andchlA +) which are involved in the membrane-bound nitrate respiratory complex ofEscherichia coli. Specific transducing phages were used to reintroduce these genes. Comparisons of membrane fractions from these transduced strains showed five membrane proteins that are necessary for the formation of an active nitrate respiration system. Two particular bacterial genes (chlD + andchlA +) were shown to control these five membrane proteins.Three of the proteins specified bychlA +, appear to be constitutively controlled and always present in the membrane ofE. coli irrespective of growth conditions, while the other two proteins, specified bychlD +, appear to be induced byanaerobic growth in the presence of nitrate.  相似文献

Four species of fast-growing pioneer tree species in the genus Cecropia exist in the forests in central Panama. Cecropia insignis is dominant in old-growth forests but absent from nearby secondary forests; C. obtusifolia, and C. peltata are abundant in secondary forests but rare in old-growth forest, and C. longipes is uncommon in both. To determine whether Cecropia habitat associations are a consequence of local dispersal or differences in recruitment success, we grew seedlings of these species in common gardens in large treefall gaps in secondary and old-growth forest. In contrast to the observed adult distribution, only C. insignis grew significantly over 16 months in secondary forests; remaining species were heavily browsed by herbivores. C. insignis also grew and survived best in old-growth forest. Differences in susceptibility to herbivory did not result from an ant defence mutualism; none of the plants were colonised by ants during the experiment. To test whether C. insignis, the species least susceptible to herbivory, trades off investment in growth in favour of defence, we also grew the four Cecropia species in a screened growing house under light conditions comparable to large forest gaps. Contrary to expectation, species growth rates were similar; only C. peltata grew significantly faster than C. insignis. These results suggest that (1) conditions in ~40-year-old secondary forests no longer support the recruitment of Cecropia species, which are canopy dominants there; and (2) among congeners, differences in plant traits with little apparent cost to growth can have large impacts on recruitment by affecting palatability to herbivores.  相似文献

Summary The area-specific coductance of the membrane in the acid and basic zones (denoted byG A andG B , respectively) ofChara cells was measured in flowing solutions, containing 5mm zwitterionic buffer, as a function of the external pH(denoted by pH0). During illuminationG A was 1 S/m2 for pH0 in the range 5 to 8.5, and increased markedly to 3 to 6 S/m2 at higher pH0.G B , however, was always larger thanG A during illumination with a typical magnitude of 5 to 15 S/m2 for pH0 6 to 12. Thus under many experimental conditions it is possible that there is no single correct value for the membrane area-specific conductance. A flow of current in the external medium between the acid and basic regions was found to be associated with pH banding, and also withG B exceedingG A . This current could be present in flowing solutions without added HCO 3 over a wide range of pH0 and at high (25mm) buffer concentration. Combining measurements ofG A andG B with measurements of the currents in the acid and basic zones (denoted byJ A andJ B , respectively), it was estimated that the resting (i.e. in the absence of net current flow) potential difference (PD) across the membranes within the individual zones (denoted byU A andU B ) was –265±20 and –183±5 mV, respectively, during illumination. Upon the removal of illumination at pH0-7.5,G A ,G B andJ B were found to decrease rapidly during the initial few hundred seconds. During this period (U B V m ) remained relatively constant. A transient hyperpolarization ofV m often occurred, the magnitude of which was correlated with the magnitude ofJ B prior to the removal of illumination. After some 0.5 to 1 ksec of darkness,G A andG B had both decreased considerably and nowG A G B andU A U B V m . Eventually, after 2 to 8 ksec of darkness, the membrane conductance was effectively homogeneous with a much smaller magnitude (typically<0.2S/m2) andV m was depolarized by typically 5 to 15 mV.  相似文献

In naturally infested soil containingPythium ultimum, P. acanthicum andPhytophthora megasperma, onlyP. ultimum was associated with root rot and damped-off seedlings. Damping-off was promoted by low soil temperatures and by flooding. Seedling stands were markedly reduced when seed was pre-incubated in soil at 12°C but not at 25°C or 35°C. Dusting carrot seed with metalaxyl significantly increased seedling stands in the field at rates from 1.5–6 g kg−1 seed and in both flooded and unflooded, naturally infested soil at 3.15 g kg−1. In greenhouse experiments using artifically infested soil,P. ultimum andP. paroecandrum caused damping-off of carrot seedlings andRhizoctonia solani reduced root and shoot weights.R. solani caused damping-off in nutrient-enriched soil.P. acanthicum andP. megasperma were not pathogenic to seedlings, although both fungi colonized roots. Soil populations of allPythium spp., particularlyP. ultimum, increased during growth of seedlings and population growth ofP. megasperma was promoted by periodic flooding. Infestation of soil withP. acanthicum did not reduce damping-off of carrot seedlings byP. ultimum orP. paroecandrum, but significantly increased root and shoot weights and decreased root colonization byR. solani P. acanthicum has potential as a biocontrol agent againstR. solani.  相似文献

The response of Japanese beech (Fagus japonica Maxim.) sprouts to canopy gaps in natural beech forest in central Japan was studied using two contrasted gaps in which tree-ring chronologies of regenerating stems were analyzed. The gaps were created by uprooting of a single Quercus mongolica var. grosseserrata stem (diameter: 50 cm; gap size: 40 m2; 23 years old) and by concurrent uprootings of four F. japonica stools (gap size: 180 m2; 30 years old). Japanese beech sprouts emerged before and after the gap formation and dominated stem populations in both gaps. In gaps, growth of F. japonica sprouts was equal or lower than growth of stems of seed origin, but most sprouts (F. japonica, Acer mono var. marmoratum) appeared a few years before emergence of seedlings. The small gap created by single stem fall was dominated by some beech sprouts from stools adjacent to the gap. The multiple gap was not closed by beech sprouts from stools surrounding the gap, but some dominant beech stems were resprouts from the uprooted beech stools. The existence of a sprout bank under the canopy may play an important role in the closing process of gaps in natural Japanese beech forest.  相似文献

The relative importance of endogenous abscisic acid (ABA), as well as Na+ and Cl in NaCl-induced responses related to growth in roots of rice seedlings were investigated. The increase in ammonium, proline and H2O2 levels, and cell wall peroxidase (POD) activity has been shown to be related to NaCl-inhibited root growth of rice seedlings. Increasing concentrations of NaCl from 50 to 150 mM progressively decreased root growth and increased both Na+ and Cl. Treatment with NaCl in the presence of 4,4-diisothiocyano-2,2-disulfonic acid (DIDS, a nonpermeating amino-reactive disulfonic acid known to inhibit the uptake of Cl) had less Cl level in roots than that in the absence of DIDS, but did not affect the levels of Na+, and responses related to growth in roots. Treatment with 50 mM Na-gluconate (the anion of which is not permeable to membrane) had similar Na+ level in roots as that with 100 mM NaCl. It was found that treatment with 50 mM Na-gluconate effected growth reduction and growth-related responses in roots in the same way as 100 mM NaCl. All these results suggest that Cl is not required for NaCl-induced responses in root of rice seedlings. Endogenous ABA level showed no increase in roots of rice seedlings exposed to 150 mM NaCl. It is unlikely that ABA is associated with NaCl-inhibited root growth of rice seedlings.  相似文献

In Ochroma pyramidale (Cav. ex Lam.) Urb., photon-saturated photosynthetic capacity (P Nmax) was 13 mol(CO2) m–2 s–1. Average stomatal conductance (g s) and water-use efficiency (WUE) were greater at high irradiance, about 260 mmol(H2O) m–2 s–1 and 2.15 g(C) kg–1(H2O), respectively. In the dark, g s values were about 30% of maximum g s. Leaf nutrient contents on a leaf area basis were 131, 15, 36, 21, and 12 mmol m–2 for N, P, K, Ca, and Mg, respectively. Ochroma also accumulated a greater amount of soluble saccharides than starch, 128 versus 90 g kg–1 (DM). The availability of N and Mg, but not P, Ca, or K, may limit photosynthetic rates of Ochroma in this site.  相似文献

Juniperus woodlands are widely distributed in western North America. Few studies of seedling emergence, long-term survival, growth or mortality of the dominant Juniperus spp. in these woodlands have been carried out. Consequently, regeneration dynamics in these woodlands are poorly understood. Juniperus ashei is the dominant woody plant in the majority of woodland and savanna communities of the Edwards Plateau region in central Texas. We examined the emergence, mortality and growth of various spatial and temporal cohorts of J. ashei seedlings over an eight or nine-year period. Greatest emergence was found during the cool, mostly winter months and under the canopy of mature J. ashei trees. Emergence was significantly inversely related to temperature and significantly linearly related to rainfall, but only if the monthly rainfall and emergence were offset by one to four months. Greatest survival occurred below the J. ashei canopy, but greatest growth was at the canopy edge. Emerging seedlings were not from the current years seed crop, but from one or more previous years seed crops. Greatest mortality occurred mostly during the summer months and in the grassland habitat. There was a significant inverse logarithmic or exponential relationship between mean monthly temperature and mean monthly mortality. A large number of J. ashei seedlings or immature plants with reduced growth were found beneath the canopy of mature trees. These plants seem to serve as a seedling bank, providing the source of recruitment into the population should the overstory trees be removed. Survival of the two canopy cohorts with known emergence dates declined with time (negative exponential function) and was 1.0–3.4% after eight or nine years depending on the cohort. The pre-existing cohort seemed to have constant mortality (and presumably replacement), with about 8% of the population dying each year. Higher growth rates for seedlings were found at the edge of the established woodland canopy, which suggests that conditions in the edge habitat or possibly in canopy gaps are best for growth beyond the seedling stage.  相似文献

Three filamentous fungi were examined for the ability to biotransform phenanthrene to oxidative (phase I) and conjugative (phase II) metabolites. Phenanthrene metabolites were purified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and identified by UV/visible absorption, mass, and1H NMR spectra.Aspergillus niger ATCC 6275,Syncephalastrum racemosum UT-70, andCunninghamella elegans ATCC 9245 initially transformed [9-14C]phenanthrene to produce metabolites at the 9,10-, 1,2-, and 3,4- positions. Subsequently, sulfate conjugates of phase I metabolites were formed byA. niger, S. racemosum, andC. elegans. Minor glucuronide conjugates of 9-phenanthrol and phenanthrenetrans-9,10-dihydrodiol were formed byS. racemosum andA. niger, respectively. In addition,C. elegans produced the glucose conjugates 1-phenanthryl -d-glucopyranoside and 2-hydroxy-1-phenanthryl -d-glucopyranoside, a novel metabolite. [9-14C]Phenanthrene metabolites were not detected in organic extracts from biotransformation experiments with the yeasts,Candida lipolytica 37-1,Candida tropicalis ATCC 32113, andCandida maltosa R-42.  相似文献

Summary We evaluated both the photosynthetic plasticity and acclimation to light of seedlings of five co-occurring tropical tree species in the Moraceae,Cecropia obtusifolia, Ficus insipida, Poulsenia armata, Brosimum alicastrum, andPseudolmedia oxyphyllaria. Distinct differences in the species' abilities to respond to increasing irradiance correlated with their known habitat breadths and successional status. The early successinalsCecropia andFicus exhibited the highest photosynthetic rates and conductance values in high light. There was a several-fold difference in assimilation across light regimes, consistent with a high physiological plasticity. When individuals grown at low light were transferred to higher irradiances, seedlings of bothCecropia andFicus produced leaves which photosynthesized at rates as high or higher than those of plants continuously grown in high light, indicating a high photosynthetic acclimation potential. In contrast, the late successionals were characterized by both a more restricted physiological plasticity and acclimation potential. Higher light levels resulted in only moderate increases in assimilation among the late successionals, and onlyBrosimum acclimated fully to increased irradiances. NeitherPoulsenia norPseudolmedia increased appreciably their photosynthetic rates when transferred to high light. This suggests that acclimation potential cannot always be inferred from plasticity responses, and calls for a reevaluation of arguments developed solely from plasticity studies. Finally, differences between the early and late successional species in the allocation of nitrogen into RuBP carboxylase and thylakoid nitrogen pools or non-photosynthetic compounds are suggested by the distinct relationships between maximum photosynthetic capacity and nitrogen content.  相似文献

Taxonomic composition and variations in density and biomass of the plankton community in the Öregrundsgrepen, a shallow coastal area, were investigated from June 1972 to November 1973. The phytoplankton biomass was large in spring but small during the rest of the year. The spring bloom was dominated by diatoms and dinoflagellates, especially byThalassiosira spp. which were also important during other seasons. Small forms, such asCryptomonas spp.,Rhodomonas spp. and monads, dominated during summer. Blue-green algae were never of any major importance. During the summer, the trophogenic layer exceeded 10 m in thickness. The metazoan fauna was of lower diversity than the plankton flora. The dominating species, the copepodsAcartia bifilosa andEurytemora affinis, constituted on the average 83% of the standing crop. The low salinities, 5–6 S, were regarded as the principal pertinent limiting factor. The metazoan fauna reached large biomass values from July to October. The protozoan fauna (in the case of ciliates), obtained biomass maxima during the spring bloom. It is suggested that the Öregrundsgrepen represents an area of elevated productivity within a region of low overall production, presumably due to local upwelling. From June 1972 to May 1973, the average biomasses were: phytoplankton 0.464 g C m–2, ciliates 0.040 g C m–2, copepod nauplii 0.010 g C m–2, micro-rotifers 0.004 g C m–2, and mesozooplankton (larger than 0.2 mm) 0.312 g C m–2. It is estimated that about than 60% of the phytoplankton production is consumed by the microzooplankton (<0.2 mm).  相似文献

The tolerance of halophilic archaebacteria towards bromide was tested in view of the fact that bromide occurs in natural brines in concentrations of up to 66 mM. It was found that, while concentrations of up to 0.8–1M are tolerated well by all halobacterial types examined, great differences exist between species with respect to bromide tolerance. WhileHalobacterium (H. salinarium, H. halobium, andH. sodomense) andNatronobacterium species are only moderately tolerant,Haloarcula (H. vallismortis, H. marismortui), andHaloferax species (H. mediterranei, H. gibbonsii) tolerate higher concentrations.Haloferax volcanii proved extremely tolerant and showed growth in bromide media at very low chloride concentrations (below 50 mM). No correlation was found between bromide tolerance and the bromide concentration in the habitat from which the strains were isolated. Iodide proved much more toxic than bromide. Bromide-tolerant strains also proved relatively resistant to growth inhibition by iodide.  相似文献

I analyzed nest site preferences and whether these preferences were linked to nest success of five bird species breeding in an arid area of southern South America. Most nests (90%) were located in three plant species (Geoffroea decorticans, Capparis atamisquea, and Atriplex lampa). Serpophaga griseiceps, Poospiza ornata, and P. torquata nested in plants with size significantly different from randomly selected plants. At the mesohabitat scale (i.e., habitat patch surrounding the nest), four species showed clear differences from random patches within the general habitat, and the remaining species (Saltatricula multicolor) showed a non-significant trend. The daily survival rate of S. griseiceps nests placed in the preferred plant species (i.e., G. decorticans) was lower than those in the other nest-plants. In the other four bird species, nest survival did not differ between preferred and other plants used for nesting. At the scale of microhabitat (i.e., plant size and location of the nest inside the plant), no significant differences were detected between unsuccessful and successful nests. Similarly, unsuccessful nest patches did not differ significantly in habitat features from those that were successful. High nest predation rates found in this habitat (around 85% for the total assemblage) and a relatively high diversity of predators (and of predation tactics) appear to impede the presence of safe sites for nesting (i.e., there are trade-offs between avoidance strategies).  相似文献

AxenicTrentepohlia odorata was cultured at three different NH4Cl levels (3.5 × 10–2, 3.5 × 10–3, 3.5 × 10–4 M) and three different light intensities (48, 76, 122 µmol m–2 s–1). Chloride had no effect on growth over this range of concentration. High light intensity and high NH4Cl concentration enhanced the specific growth rate. The carotenoid content increased under a combination of high light intensity and low N concentration. WhenD. bardawil was exposed to the same combination of growth conditions, there was an increase in its carotenoid content. The light saturation and the light inhibition constants (K s andK i, respectively) for growth, and the saturation constant (K m) for NH4Cl were determined. TheK s andK i values were higher inT. odorata (66.7 and> 122 mol m–2 s–1, respectively) than inD. bardawil (5.1 and 14.7 µmol m–2 s–1, respectively). Seedling densities and the mortality of fleshy-fruited species under 10 European tall-shrub species and the tree Sorbus aria were analyzed in 10-year-old experimental scrub for one growing season. The mean total densities of seedlings of 18 fleshy-fruited species differed under the different hosts, being highest under Crataegus monogyna, Viburnum opulus and Rosa canina (24–20 m–2); intermediate under Sorbus aria, Rhamnus catharticus, Cornus sanguinea, Ligustrum vulgare and Juniperus communis (17–12 m–2); and lowest under Euonymus europaeus, Viburnum lantana and Prunus spinosa (10–9 m–2). This ranking was similar for the 11 planted species and for nine bird-dispersed, non-planted species which invaded the site, notably Hedera helix and Solanum dulcamara. Within the experimental scrub as a whole mortality of seedlings differed significantly among species, being highest in those with the smallest number of recruits. Mortality ranged from 94% and 89% for Solanum dulcamara and Viburnum opulus to 26% for Hedera helix and Ligustrum vulgare. The mean mortality across all species of seedlings did not differ significantly between host species, although it was slightly higher under Juniperus and Cornus (56%, 53%) and lower under Viburnum lantana and Rhamnus (42%, 41%). In four species, the mortality of seedlings was significantly higher under conspecific adults. Mean topsoil water content after a dry spell was negatively correlated with the diffuse site factor (DSF). The mean density of accumulated seedlings of the most abundant seedling species (Hedera) was positively correlated with the topsoil water content. Densities of other species showed no strong correlations with either topsoil water content or DSF. The probable factors controlling recruitment are discussed.  相似文献
