The composition and structure of the epibiotic flora of the Japanese scallop Mizuhopecten yessoensis were studied on the basis of data from long-term (1979 to 2007) observations on the scallop beds in Peter the Great Bay (Sea of Japan). In all, 52 species of macroalgae belonging to three phyla were found on the scallop shells; 3 species were new records for the benthic flora of the area studied. Red algae constituted the bulk of the species richness of algal epibionts; brown algae were represented by the lowest number of species. Species of Chlorophyta predominated in terms of biomass; species of Rhodophyta were found in lower numbers. The main form of the thallus of epibiotic algae was bushy or filamentous. The ratio of common to rare species was 30 : 70. As compared to the benthic flora, the epibiotic flora on the scallop shells was characterized by a greater number of warm-water species.  相似文献

The nature of the ancestral red alga: inferences from a cladistic analysis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A cladistic analysis of the orders of Rhodophyta is presented. Sixteen taxa and 34 characters comprise the data matrix. Included in the analysis are biochemical and ultrastructural features of pigments, cell walls, cell organelles, mitosis and pit connections as well as vegetative and reproductive characters. The traditional recognition of two classes or subclasses, Bangiophycidae and Florideophycidae, is not supported regardless of whether Porphyridiales, Rhodochaetales or Bangiales is designated the outgroup. Florideophycidae, however, appears to be monophyletic with Bangiales as its sister group. Relationships among taxa with one or two plug cap layers, i.e. Acrochaetiales, Palmariales, Corallinales, Nemaliales, Batrachospermales, Gelidiales and Hildenbrandiales are unresolved. Rhodochaetales, Bangiales and possibly Erythropeltidales are monophyletic, but Porphyridiales is polyphyletic. The class Cyanidiophyceae is not recognized and the included genera are considered to be unicellular red algae belonging to Porphyridiales. Taxa that have been proposed as sister groups for red algae, including Cyanobacteria, Cryptophyta, Glaucophyta and Chlorophyta, and Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes are discussed in relation to the proposed phylogeny of Rhodophyta.  相似文献

Monthly collections of benthic algae were made during 1 yr at 11 stations between the mouth and the salt water limits of the Patos Lagoon estuary, Brazil. A total of 94 taxa of algae were recorded, including 40 Cyanophyta, 26 Chlorophyta, 1 Xanthophyta, 3 Phaeophyta, and 24 Rhodophyta. Although the number of Rhodophyta and Phaeophyta decreased towards lower salinities, due to local salinity patterns, species substitution among the Chlorophyta and increase of Cyanophyta in the estuary, the species number remained approximately the same between the mouth and the upper saline reaches of this estuary.

The distributional limits of 64 species in the flora resulted in the formation of three algal groups of negative correlation. The horizontal distribution of each group of species was related to type of substratum, wave exposure or salinity, or a combination of these factors. The individual evaluation of the factors demonstrated that, apart from salinity, substratum and degree of exposure are of primary importance for the horizontal distribution of a large part of the algal flora in this estuary.  相似文献

A Cladistic Outline of the Eumycota   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract— A cladistic classification of fungi determined by a parsimony method with 21 terminal taxa and 51 characters is presented. Outgroup comparison with Oomycetes determined polarity assessments. The group Eumycota, including the traditional taxa Hyphochytriomycetes, Chytridio-mycetes, Zygomycetes, Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes, is defined by two synapomorphies, molecular weight of 25S RNA, and chitin cell walls. Some groups are supported as monophyletic; Eumycota, Amastigomycota, Dicaryomycotina, Ascomycetes, Protobasidiomycetes, Basidiomycetes, Euascomy-cetidae, Hymenomycetidae and Homobasidiomycetales. The Hyphochytriomycota is the sister group to remaining groups. The Taphrinaceae and Saccharomycetaceae are more closely related to the Basidiomycetes than to any of the ascomycetous groups. In the absence of unique character sets groups such as the Mastigomycotina, Hemiascomycetes, Ustomycetes, Holobasidiomycetes, Heterobasidio-mycetes, Phragmobasidiomycetes and the Teliomycetes cannot be maintained and are abandoned as paraphyletic. Characters and terminal taxa used for the analysis are defined and discussed.  相似文献

Summary Twelve macroalgae belonging to the Chlorophyta, Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta were collected from the Arabian Gulf. Field samples and samples that were first incubated at 5° C and 24° C in the light for 1 week were analysed for lipids and fatty acids. The lipid contents varied according to the macroalga and, within the Chlorophyta and Phaeophyta, some representatives accumulated more lipids at 5° C and others at 24° C. All samples of algae had similar lipid composition with only quantitative differences. The temperature did not have a common effect on the lipid composition of representative algae, although changes in the relative concentration of specific classes were recorded. The Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta were as a rule richer than the Chlorophyta in eicosatetranoic (20:4) and eicosapentaenoic (20:5) but poorer in linolenic (18:3) acids. In most of the algae, incubation at 5° C was associated with lowering the proportion of palmitic acid (16:0) in the total lipids, and, but only in the Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta, increasing the concentration of 20:4 and 20:5. These polyunsaturated fatty acids occurred in high levels in monogalactosyldiacylglycerols (MGDG) and digalactosyldiacylglycerols (DGDG) of the Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta but not the Chlorophyta, the MGDG and DGDG of which were rich in 18:3 and hexadecatrienoic acid (16:3). The spatial and temporal abundance of epiphytic dinoflagellates associated with ciguatera was studied over two annual cycles (March 1999 to March 2000 and March 2001 to March 2002) in the northwestern coast of Cuba. From 14 species of macroalgae (Phaeophyta, Chlorophyta, and Rhodophyta), 1340 samples were obtained identifying seven species as potentially noxious; five of them are new reports for Cuba's phytobenthos: Prorocentrum belizeanum Faust, P. concavum Fukuyo, P. mexicanum Tafall, Coolia monotis Meunier, and Ostreopsis lenticularis Fukuyo. ANOVA/MANOVA analysis showed significant spatial differences: lower cell abundance near the shoreline adjacent to a river inlet and higher cell abundance in the deepest area. Prorocentrum lima (Ehrenberg) Dodge 1975 was found mainly on Phaeophyta followed by Chlorophyta and Rhodophyta. Gambierdiscus toxicus was found mainly on Phaeophyta followed by Rhodophyta and Chlorophyta. All the species reported in the study area were mainly on Padina spp. (Phaeophyta). Acanthophora spicifera (Rhodophyta) did not host dinoflagellate species. Environmental conditions in summer (higher temperature, more nutrients, greater water transparency, and low wind intensity) are suitable for macroalgae development, which serves as a substrate for potentially harmful dinoflagellates, and possibly the main vector for spreading ciguatera along the coast of Cuba.  相似文献

The study of macroalgae antimicrobial agents is limited to Mexico and scarce in the Veracruzano Reef System (SAV). It is necessary to devote efforts towards this field of applied phycology. The aim was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of some phyla of Rhodophyta, Chlorophyta and Ochrophyta from SAV. Methanolic extracts from 23 marine macroalgae species (7 Chlorophyta, 4 Phaeophyta and 12 Rhodophyta) from the Veracruzano Reef System (SAV) (Mexico) were evaluated for antimicrobial activity. Antibacterial and antifungal activity were assessed by agar diffusion and agar dilution methods. The differences between mean values obtained for experimental groups was done by analysis of variance (ANOVA multifactorial model), p-values of 0.001 or less were considered statistically significant. Two new records are recognized for SAV (Laurencia gracilis and Sebdenia flabellata) and Compsothamnion thuioides for the Gulf of Mexico coasts. 16 species showed antibacterial activity, of which Caulerpa sertularioides, Ulva lactuca and Laurencia obtuse had significant activity on Gram-positive bacteria. 43.7% belong to the phyla Chlorophyta (7 species), 50% Rhodophyta (8 species) and 6.25% Ochrophyta (1 species). This indicates that the extracts of the algae of the Rhodophyta and Chlorophyta are the ones that showed the greatest activity. Regarding the yeasts, 16.6% of the total algae collected were active in the different yeast strains. 43.7% belongs to Chlorophyta species and for Rhodophyta were 60%. The macroalgae with the highest antifungal activity were: Cymopolia barbata, Ulva lactuca and Laurencia gracilis. The macroalgae of the Veracruzano Reef System present antimicrobial activity. This study is the first investigation of macroalgae's bioactive components from SAV, where they could be sources for future medical applications.  相似文献

Checklists of the marine algae of Malaysia have been published. The last checklist included the marine algae of Singapore. The checklist recorded 212 taxa for the region. This paper lists an additional 7 taxa of Chlorophyta, 18 taxa of Rhodophyta and 5 taxa of Phaeophyta, which had been left out of the last checklist. These include marine algae from Pulau Pinang, Pulau Redang and Pulau Sibu. In addition, new records of Cyanophyta (2 species), Chlorophyta (4 species), Rhodophyta (10 species) and Phaeophyta (3 species) are reported.  相似文献

Apophlaea lyallii Hooker f. et Harvey and A. sinclairii Harvey in Hooker et Harvey, endemic Rhodophyta from New Zealand, were found to harbor a systemic fungus, Mycosphaerella apophlaeae Kohlmeyer. The algae occur on rocks in the upper intertidal zone and are resistant to desiccation and insolation. These suspected symbiotic associations which are similar to, but different from, lichens, are considered mycophycobioses. This is the first report of a supposed mycophycobiosis in members of the Rhodophyta.  相似文献

We present the results of an intensive sampling program carried out from 2000 to 2007 along both coasts of Costa Rica, Central America. The presence of 44 species of benthic marine algae is reported for the first time for Costa Rica. Most of the new records are Rhodophyta (27 spp.), followed by Chlorophyta (15 spp.), and Heterokontophyta, Phaeophycea (2 spp.). Overall, the currently known marine flora of Costa Rica is comprised of 446 benthic marine algae and 24 Cyanobacteria. This species number is an under estimation, and will increase when species of benthic marine algae from taxonomic groups where only limited information is available (e.g., microfilamentous benthic marine algae, Cyanobacteria) are included. The Caribbean coast harbors considerably more benthic marine algae (318 spp.) than the Pacific coast (190 spp.); such a trend has been observed in all neighboring countries. Compared to other Central American countries, Costa Rica has the highest number of reported benthic marine algae; however, Panama may have a similarly high diversity after unpublished results from a Rhodophyta survey (Wysor, unpublished) are included. Sixty-two species have been found along both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of Costa Rica; we discuss this result in relation to the emergence of the Central American Isthmus.  相似文献

Fatty acid composition of ten marine algae from australian waters   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Detailed fatty acid analyses are reported for ten benthic algae from Australian waters of which the data for Cladophora fascicularis (Chlorophyta); Polysiphonia pungens, Porphyra sp., Centroceras clavatum (Rhodophyta); Hormosira banksii, Ralfsia sp., and Dictyota dichomota (Phaeophyta) are presented for the first time. The analyses report the exact molecular structure of component acids which is essential for taxonomic and food chain studies. The acid 16:4ω3 could be taxonomically distinguishing for species of the Chlorophyta. The occurrence of cis-vaccenic acid (18:1ω7) in the algae reported here suggests a distribution in marine benthic algae which is wider than hitherto realised, with particular taxonomic importance for Chlorophyta species in which it occurs in high levels. Corallina officinalis was found to contain the non-methylene interrupted acids 20:2 and 22:2.  相似文献

The mechanisms by which algae disperse across space on coral reefs are poorly known. We investigated the ability of four common Caribbean herbivorous fish species to disperse viable algal fragments through consumption of macroalgae and subsequent defecation. Fragments of all major algal taxa (Phaeophyta, Rhodophyta, and Chlorophyta) were found in 98.7 % of the fecal droppings of all fish species; however, the ability to survive gut passage and reattach to a substrate differed between algal taxa. While survival and reattachment approached zero for Phaeophyta and Chlorophyta, 76.4 % of the fragments belonging to the group Rhodophyta (mostly species in the order Gelidiaceae) survived gut passage, and were able to grow and reattach to the substrate by forming new rhizoids. Our results thus show that Gelidid algal species are dispersed by swimming herbivores. While the relative contribution of this mechanism to overall algal dispersal and recruitment in a wider ecological context remains unknown, our findings illustrate a previously undescribed mechanism of algal dispersal on coral reefs which is analogous to the dispersal of terrestrial plants, plant fragments, and seeds via herbivore ingestion and defecation.  相似文献

Tidal pools in the Mexican Tropical Pacific coast have received relatively little attention in spite of their considerable richness in species and wide distribution in the region. This paper presents the first characterization of the algal flora of this region. It analyzes the number and composition of species of the tidal pools of six localities with regard to geographical distribution and its seasonal variations as well as tidal level. 97 species are reported, 25 Chlorophyta, 23 Phaeophyta, 34 Rhodophyta and 15 Cyanophyta.Of that total of species, 63% were found in one locality, 23.7% in two, 11.3% in three and 1 % in 4 or 5 localities. Not one species was common to all of the pools. The highest number of species was found on pools of the middle and low intertidal where the Chlorophyta, Rhodophyta and Phaeophyta were the most abundant algae. Cyanophyta was more common in the supralittoral and high intertidal pools.  相似文献

The Archaeplastida consists of three lineages, Rhodophyta, Virideplantae and Glaucophyta. The extracellular matrix of most members of the Rhodophyta and Viridiplantae consists of carbohydrate-based or a highly glycosylated protein-based cell wall while the Glaucophyte covering is poorly resolved. In order to elucidate possible evolutionary links between the three advanced lineages in Archaeplastida, a genomic analysis was initiated. Fully sequenced genomes from the Rhodophyta and Virideplantae and the well-defined CAZy database on glycosyltransferases were included in the analysis. The number of glycosyltransferases found in the Rhodophyta and Chlorophyta are generally much lower then in land plants (Embryophyta). Three specific features exhibited by land plants increase the number of glycosyltransferases in their genomes: (1) cell wall biosynthesis, the more complex land plant cell walls require a larger number of glycosyltransferases for biosynthesis, (2) a richer set of protein glycosylation, and (3) glycosylation of secondary metabolites, demonstrated by a large proportion of family GT1 being involved in secondary metabolite biosynthesis. In a comparative analysis of polysaccharide biosynthesis amongst the taxa of this study, clear distinctions or similarities were observed in (1) N-linked protein glycosylation, i.e., Chlorophyta has different mannosylation and glucosylation patterns, (2) GPI anchor biosynthesis, which is apparently missing in the Rhodophyta and truncated in the Chlorophyta, (3) cell wall biosynthesis, where the land plants have unique cell wall related polymers not found in green and red algae, and (4) O-linked glycosylation where comprehensive orthology was observed in glycosylation between the Chlorophyta and land plants but not between the target proteins.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Multicellular eukaryotic algae are phylogenetically disparate. Nuclear DNA content estimates have been published for fewer than 1 % of the described species of Chlorophyta, Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta. The present investigation aims to summarize the state of our knowledge and to add substantially to our database of C-values for theses algae. METHODS: The DNA-localizing fluorochrome DAPI (4', 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) and RBC (chicken erythrocyte) standard were used to estimate 2C values with static microspectrophotometry. KEY RESULTS: 2C DNA contents for 85 species of Chlorophyta range from 0.2-6.1 pg, excluding the highly polyploidy Charales and Desmidiales with DNA contents of up to 39.2 and 20.7 pg, respectively. 2C DNA contents for 111 species of Rhodophyta range from 0.1-2.8 pg, and for 44 species of Phaeophyta range from 0.2-1.8 pg. CONCLUSIONS: New availability of consensus higher-level molecular phylogenies provides a framework for viewing C-value data in a phylogenetic context. Both DNA content ranges and mean values are greater in taxa considered to be basal. It is proposed that the basal, ancestral genome in each algal group was quite small. Both mechanistic and ecological processes are discussed that could have produced the observed C-value ranges.  相似文献

Extracts from 44 species of Vietnamese marine algae, including 15 Chlorophyta, 18 Rhodophyta and 11 Phaeophyta species, were examined for hemagglutination activity with a variety of different animal and human erythrocytes that were untreated or treated with enzymes. Almost all extracts showed activity toward at least one type of erythrocytes, although those from three Chlorophyta and two Rhodophyta species showed no hemagglutination with any type of erythrocytes examined. Strong activity was detected in extracts from two Chlorophyta (Anadyomene plicata and Avrainvillea erecta) and four Rhodophyta species (Gracilaria eucheumatoides, Gracilaria salicornia, Kappaphycus alvarezii, and Kappaphycus striatum) with enzyme-treated rabbit and sheep erythrocytes. The hemagglutinins of seven Chlorophyta and eight Rhodophyta species were examined for sugar-binding specificity, pH- and temperature-stability, and divalent cation-independency of hemagglutination using ammonium sulfate-precipitates prepared from their extracts. In a hemagglutination-inhibition test with various monosaccharides and glycoproteins, none of the hemagglutinins had affinity for monosaccharides, except the Codium arabicum and Gracilaria euchematoides hemagglutinins, whose activities were inhibited by both N-acetyl-d-galactosamine and N-acetyl-d-glucosamine. On the other hand, all of the hemagglutinins activities were inhibited by some glycoproteins. The inhibition profiles with glycoproteins were different depending on hemagglutinin species, and suggest the presence of lectins specific for high mannose N-glycans, complex N-glycans, or O-glycans. The activities of these algal hemagglutinins were stable over a wide range of pH and temperature, and independent of the presence of divalent cations. These results indicate that Vietnamese marine algae are a good source of novel and useful lectins.  相似文献

Choline and inositol distribution in algae and fungi   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Inositol and choline were present in varying amounts among the species of Rhodophyta, Phaeophyta, Chlorophyta, and Euglenophyta examined. However, in the two members of the order Fucales (division Phaeophyta) examined, no detectable amounts of choline were found. In contrast, the species of Cyanophyta examined contained no detectable amounts of either choline or inositol. All species of the fungal classes Phycomyceteae, Ascomyceteae, and Basidiomyceteae collected contained both inositol and choline in varying amounts. The red, brown, and blue-green algae usually contained much less inositol and choline than do plant and animals sources, but the fungi and the algae Chlorella and Euglena contained amounts comparable to those present in plant sources.  相似文献

Some common properties of lectins from marine algae   总被引:10,自引:1,他引:9
Hori  Kanji  Miyazawa  Keisuke  Ito  Keiji 《Hydrobiologia》1990,(1):561-566
Twelve kinds of lectins isolated from four species of marine algae, Boodlea coacta (Chlorophyta) and Hypnea japonica, Carpopeltis flabellata and Solieria robusta (Rhodophyta), were compared for their chemical and biological properties. These lectins were proteins or glycoproteins, similar to terrestrial plant lectins. However, unlike most terrestrial plant lectins, they had a small molecular size (4,200 to 25,000 daltons), were mostly monomeric, and had no affinity for monosaccharides. They strongly agglutinated trypsin-treated rabbit erythrocytes, and their activities commonly were inhibited by glycoproteins bearing N-glycans. From hemagglutination-inhibition tests with various glycoproteins and related compounds, it was found that B. coacta lectins recognize high-mannose N-glycans; H. japonica lectins complex N-glycans, and C. flabellata and S. robusta lectins recognize both types of N-glycans.  相似文献

The presence of d-aspartate (d-Asp), a biologically rare amino acid, was evaluated in 38 species of marine macroalgae (seaweeds). Despite the ubiquitous presence of free l-Asp, free d-Asp was detected in only 5 species belonging to the Sargassaceae family of class Phaeophyceae (brown algae) but not in any species of the phyla Chlorophyta (green algae) and Rhodophyta (red algae). All other members of Phaeophyceae, including 3 species classified into the section Teretia of Sargassaceae did not contain d-Asp. These results indicate that the presence of free d-Asp in marine macroalgae is restricted only to the Sargassaceae family, excluding the species in the section Teretia.  相似文献
