It has been known for a few decades that European rabbits consume seeds and fleshy fruits of native woody plants, but relevant factors in the endozoochory processes such as seed predation (chewing and digestion), sexual differentiation, or the temporal pattern of seed recovery have been little evaluated until now. In this study, we examined seed dispersal of three Mediterranean shrub species by wild rabbits through monitoring of seed retrieval and germination after gut passage. Twelve adult wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus; six males and six females) of similar size and age were fed seeds of three shrub species with fleshy fruits (Crataegus monogyna, Myrtus communis and Pistacia lentiscus). After ingestion of fruits, seeds were retrieved from dung every 12 h for a day and a half. The viability and germination of retrieved seeds were tested along with that of uneaten seeds. Between 5% and 76% of ingested seeds were retrieved from dung, with significant differences between species and sex. Most M. communis seeds were retrieved with 12–24 h after ingestion; almost all C. monogyna seeds were recovered with 0–12 h after ingestion; no seeds of P. lentiscus were recovered. Only in the case of M. communis seed was the recovery rate greater in female than in male. Passage through the rabbit gut significantly increased seed germination in M. communis, and decreased it in C. monogyna. In conclusion, wild rabbits acted in this study as predators of C. monogyna and P. lentiscus seeds and potential dispersers of M. communis seeds.  相似文献

We study the effect of ingestion by birds on seed germination and theconsequences of absence of dispersal, with the persistency of the seedsinside the fruit. We collected seeds of four woody species ofthe temperate rainforest of Chiloé: Gaultheriamucronata, Luma apiculata, Myrteolanummularia, and Myrceugenia planipes. The seedstested had the following origins: 1) Ingested seeds: seeds collected fromthe feces of birds, 2) Extracted seeds: seeds obtained directly from thefruits, and 3) Intact fruits: fruits collected directly from the plants.Germination of Myrceugenia planipes under greenhouseconditions, Luma apiculata, and Myrteolanummularia under laboratory conditions, and Gaultheriamucronata under both conditions was analyzed. We found that the seedsreach their maximum germination between 15–20 days after sowing, withthe exception of those of G. mucronata sown in the greenhouse,which showed a low germination rate. In the greenhouse assay, seeds ofG. mucronata ingested by birds, seeds extracted manuallyfrom the fruits, and seeds inside the fruits did not show significant differencesin their germination percentages. In the laboratory assays, the seeds ofG. mucronata and M. nummulariaingested by birds and the seeds extracted manually from the fruits also did not show anysignificant difference in germination. Under laboratory conditions, theseeds of L. apiculata ingested by birds presented astatistically greater percentage of germination than the seeds extracted manually.Under greenhouse conditions, seeds of M. planipes ingestedby birds did not present a statistically different germination percentage fromthose seeds extracted from the fruits. The seeds of M.planipes, and L. apiculata inside the intactfruits did not germinate. We conclude that birds do not affect the seedviability of any of the four species studied.  相似文献

Most plants with fleshy fruits have seeds that are ingested by animals, but a less well-understood mode of seed dispersal involves fleshy fruits containing seeds that are discarded by frugivorous animals because they are too large or toxic to be ingested. We studied the seed dispersal biology of Haemanthus deformis, an amaryllid lily species found in a mosaic of bush clumps in a grassland matrix in South Africa. We asked whether seed dispersal is directed in and among bush clumps and whether germination and survival are greater for seeds dispersed to bush clumps than for those dispersed into grassland. Using camera trapping, we found that fruits are consumed mainly by birds and rodents. The pulp was removed from the seeds which were then discarded without ingestion. While many seeds were dispersed close to the parent plant, most (c. 78.5%) were dispersed further than 1 m away from the parent plant. Longer distance dispersal resulted mainly from birds flying off with fruits in their bill or from rodents engaging in scatter-hoarding behavior. Seedling survival was most successful within bush clumps as compared to grasslands and shade was identified as a primary requirement for seedling survival. Seeds from which the fruit pulp had been removed germinated faster than those in intact fruits. Haemanthus deformis deploys a system of directed seed dispersal, whereby both birds and rodents contribute to the dispersal of seeds within patchy bush clumps that are favorable for seedling survival.  相似文献

Many invasive plant species have fleshy fruits that are eaten by native frugivorous birds which disperse their seeds and may facilitate their germination, playing an important role in plant invasion success. The fleshy‐fruited shrub Cotoneaster franchetii (Rosaceae) is an important invasive alien in the mountainous regions of central Argentina. To determine the role of avian frugivorous in fruit removal of this species, we conducted a frugivore exclusion experiment including bagged and unbagged branches in 75 plants of C. franchetii. At the end of the dispersal period, we compared the percentage of missing fruits (removed by birds + naturally dropped) in unbagged branches with the percentage of naturally dropped fruits in bagged branches. To assess whether any mechanism acting on seeds during their passage through bird guts (de‐inhibition by pulp removal and/or seed scarification) affects seed germination of this species, we compared percentage and speed of germination among seeds obtained from faeces of the native frugivorous Turdus chiguanco, from manually de‐pulped fruits, and from intact fruits. The percentage of missing fruits per shrub in unbagged branches was significantly higher than the percentage of naturally dropped fruits in bagged branches, suggesting that frugivorous birds play an important role in fruit removal of C. franchetii in the study area. Seeds from bird faeces and from manually de‐pulped fruits germinated in higher percentage and faster than seeds from intact fruits. Germination percentage and speed of seeds from manually de‐pulped fruits were significantly higher than those of gut‐passed seeds. These results indicate that T. chiguanco increases and accelerates seed germination of C. franchetii through pulp removal, but not through seed scarification. Overall, our findings indicate that native frugivorous birds facilitate the dispersal and germination success of C. franchetii, likely playing an important role in its invasion throughout the mountainous region of central Argentina.  相似文献

The loss of seed-rich wintering habitats has been a major contributory cause of farmland bird population declines in western Europe. Agricultural grasslands are particularly poor winter foraging habitats for granivorous birds, which have declined most in the pastoral farming regions of western Britain. We describe an experiment to test the utility of fertile ryegrass (Lolium) swards as a potentially rich source of winter seed for declining farmland birds. Four patches of final-cut grass silage were allowed to set seed and were left in situ overwinter. Half of each patch was lightly aftermath grazed in an attempt to increase the accessibility of the seed to foraging birds and reduce the perceived predation risk. Large numbers of yellowhammers (Emberiza citrinella) and reed buntings (E. schoeniclus) foraged on the seeded plots throughout the winter. They preferred to forage on ungrazed seeded plots, where the accumulation of senescent foliage resulted in a 14% average loss in silage yield in the following season. However, seed produced on the plots also led to sward regeneration, increasing subsequent yields on some plots. The technique offers clear benefits as a potential future agri-environment measure for declining granivorous birds, with wide applicability, but requires further development to minimise sward damage and costs to the farmer. Autumn grazing should reduce sward damage, but at the cost of reduced usage by buntings. Using the technique just prior to reseeding would be one way of avoiding any costs of sward damage.  相似文献

Although prominent examples exist of non-native species causing substantial ecological harm, many have neutral or positive effects, including filling surrogate roles once performed by extinct native organisms. We tested the ecological roles of two non-native mammals as seed dispersers or seed predators in Guåhan, which, due to invasive brown tree snakes (Boiga irregularis), is devoid of native seed dispersers–birds and bats. We conducted feeding trials with captive rats (Rattus spp.), which are present but uncommon due to predation by snakes, and pigs (Sus scrofa), which are abundant. We examined if and how they interacted with common forest fruits. We then compared how any gut-passed or animal-handled seeds germinated compared to seeds left in whole fruit or depulped seeds. Rats and pigs interacted with most of the fruits and seeds (>80%) that they were fed. Of those, most seeds were destroyed—78% for rats and 90% for pigs, across both native and non-native plant species. Compared to seeds germinating within whole fruits, rats improved germination of the seeds that they handled without ingesting, while pigs diminished the germination of seeds that they handled. The small percentage of seeds (approximately 1.5% for rats and 5% for pigs) that survived gut passage germinated in higher proportions than those in whole fruits. Percentages of seed survival to germination are lower than found in similar studies with native avian frugivores. Our results indicate that pigs and rats have mixed effects on seeds, but are not suitable surrogates for native seed dispersers.  相似文献

Questions: (i) How do large proportions of seeds pass through the guts of goats without damage? (ii) What is the temporal pattern of seed defecation? (iii) Does ingestion by goats enhance or depress seed germination? Location: Doñana Natural Park, SW Spain. Methods: Six female goats of similar size and age were fed with 1000 seeds of four common Mediterranean shrub species (Cistus salvifolius, Halimium halimifolium, Myrtus communis, Pistacia lentiscus), which were retrieved from the goat's dung 96 h after ingestion. The seeds retrieved were tested for germination and viability, along with seeds not eaten by the goats. Results: Less than 30% of the seeds eaten were retrieved from the dung, with significant differences between species. No seeds of P. lentiscus were retrieved. The major part of the seeds was retrieved between 48 and 72 h after ingestion in all other species. The passage through the goat gut significantly increased seed germination in C. salvifolius and H. halimifolium, and depressed it in M. communis. Viability was significantly lower in the eaten seeds of M. communis than in the uneaten ones, while there were no differences in C. salvifolius and H. halimifolium. Conclusions: Goats can potentially disperse seeds of the plants that they eat. This should be taken into account when designing management plans in order to prevent shrub invasion in undesired areas. It could also be used as a management tool for spreading populations of desireable shrub species.  相似文献

Forest species can have their seeds damaged by granivorous insects, especially by those in their larval stage. In this context, this study aims to report the occurrence of Amblycerus species in Cordia trichotoma seeds, to describe their main damage to seeds and effects on germination, as well as their associated hymenopteran parasitoids. Therefore, seven trees were selected in the municipality of Taquaruçu do Sul, RS, Brazil. Fruits were collected weekly from the medium third of the tree crown, from the beginning of their formation until total dehiscence. To examine the damage caused by granivorous insects within the fruits, 15 fruits from each tree were sectioned with a scalpel. Furthermore, 10 fruits from each tree were stored individually in clear plates to verify the occurrence and identification of granivorous insect species. Evidence of the damage caused to seeds was verified through the germination test by comparing preserved and damaged seeds, with four repetitions of 25 seeds each. The species Amblycerus longesuturalis and Amblycerus profaupar (Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae) were found associated with fruits of C. trichotoma. Female insects predominantly laid eggs on the superior part between the marcescent calyx and the fruit, and larvae perforated the fruit tegument to start consuming seed embryos and reserves. Bruquine larvae are parasitized by Hymenoptera of Bracon, Mirax, Omeganastatus and Triapsis genera. In conclusion, the germination of C. trichotoma seeds is significantly affected by emergence orifices caused by granivorous species.  相似文献

In Pieris napi, female fitness increases with number of matings, but wild females mate at an unexpectedly low rate. From a sexual conflict perspective this could be because males manipulate female remating, or alternatively, because wild females experience costs associated with remating which are not applicable under laboratory conditions. To get an indication which sex controls remating and/or the different sexes’ relative costs and benefits of remating, we here test whether female mating frequency is affected by male courtship intensity. We found no effect on female mating frequency or lifespan. This indicates that (i) females control remating and their optimal mating frequency is lower compared to males, or (ii) males can manipulate female remating. We argue that both these alternatives may apply simultaneously to P. napiand that they are inseparable.  相似文献

Abstract The Grey-headed flying fox Pteropus poliocephalus Temminck 1825 is the only mammalian frugivore to occupy substantial areas of the subtropical rainforests of eastern Australia. The composition of the P. poliocephalus diet and diet specialization in the species are therefore pertinent to studies of trophic structure, seed dispersal and evolutionary processes in these forests. During a three-year diet study, P. poliocephalus used fruits from 44 species of canopy and edge plants. Their taxonomically diverse diet was dominated by the Myrtaceae and Moraceae. Dietary specialization by P. poliocephalus was examined using two criteria: the influence of fruit morphology on diet choice and dietary overlap with sympatric avian frugivores. There was no evidence from either approach that they were specialist feeders. Initial analyses comparing the morphological characters of diet fruits with fruits available to P. poliocephalus during the study period showed a preference for white fruits, berries, syconia and fruits with multiple seeds, and avoidance of black fruits and drupes. However, these significant results were not sustained when the confounding effects of correlations between fruit morphology and other traits were considered. All, except the response to berries, could be attributed to either avoidance by P. poliocephalus of secondary compounds in the Lauraceae or selection for the beneficial phenology of Ficus. Dietary overlap with frugivorous birds was notably high and the fruit diet of P. poliocephalus formed a subset of the avian diet. Associations between fruit colour, size and protective mechanisms have been documented in other rainforest areas and have been proposed as indicators of coadaptive relationships between vertebrate frugivores and their diet plants. However, these associations were not apparent in the morphological characters of fleshy fruits from Australian subtropical rainforest trees. An explanatory hypothesis of primarily avian influence on fruit traits is presented.  相似文献

Females often mate with several different males, which may promote sperm competition and increase offspring viability. However, the potential benefits of polyandry remain controversial, particularly in birds where recent reviews have suggested that females gain few genetic benefits from extra‐pair mating. In tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor), we found that females with prior breeding experience had more sires per brood when paired to genetically similar social mates, and, among experienced females, broods with more sires had higher hatching success. Individual females breeding in two consecutive years also produced broods with more sires when they were more genetically similar to their mate. Thus, experienced females were able to avoid the costs of mating with a genetically similar social mate and realize fitness benefits from mating with a relatively large number of males. This is one of the first studies to show that female breeding experience influences polyandry and female fitness in a natural population of vertebrates. Our results suggest that the benefits of polyandry may only be clear when considering both the number of mates females acquire and their ability to modify the outcome of sexual conflict.  相似文献

By means of DNA barcoding and microsatellite analyses, we studied the species and individuals of legitimate seed dispersers of the Mediterranean shrub Pistacia lentiscus, a keystone species that represents the main source of food in winter for frugivorous birds. We collected dropping of birds containing seeds, and after DNA extraction we amplified and sequenced a fragment of the mitochondrial COI gene. Through BLASTN queries of the sequenced fragments against registered sequences in the GenBank database we identified the bird species that are currently dispersing P. lentiscus seeds. Further, through the amplification of specific nuclear microsatellite loci we calculated standard genetic diversity parameters of the population of birds from the genus Sylvia (the blackcap and Sardinian warbler), the most important dispersers of P. lentiscus. Five bird species were identified as seed dispersers through their barcode match. Further, we found that S. melanocephala displayed slightly lower levels of genetic diversity than S. atricapilla. In this study we show how the genetic analyses of environmental faecal samples can be a useful and convenient tool for the study of plant-frugivore interactions through the ascertainment of the identity of the species involved and through the analyses of genetic variability of their populations.  相似文献

To determine the effects of ingestion by birds on seed germination, we performed germination experiments in the field and laboratory with Sorbus commixta. The germination of four groups of seeds was compared: ingested seeds, seeds defecated in feces after feeding of fruits to birds; extracted seeds, seeds deliberately extracted from the fruit pulp; juiced seeds, seeds plus the juice of the pulp after seeds had been deliberately extracted from the pulp; intact seeds, seeds in untreated intact fruits. In the laboratory, intact and juiced seeds hardly germinated, but ingested and extracted seeds germinated. Thus, the pulp and its juice appeared to inhibit germination, but seeds could germinate without ingestion by birds once the seeds had been manually extracted from the pulp. In the field, intact fruits did not germinate in the first spring, because the seed was still covered with pulp. The pulp of intact seeds decomposed during the first summer, and thus, the seeds had the potential to germinate during the second spring. In fact, most intact seeds do not germinate during the second spring either, since they lose their viability during the first summer. Behaviors of 18 species of birds eating fruits of Hippophae rhamnoides spp. sinensis were observed from September 2003 to March 2004. Their foraging patterns were found to be very different and can be divided into five classes: (1) direct swallowing the fruits on crown of the shrubs and sometimes regurgitating seeds soon after; (2) carrying the fruits to their perching sites and swallowing; (3) pecking the fruits from the shrubs to the ground, eating pulp and seeds but leaving pericarp; (4) pecking through the pericarp, eating pulp and leaving pericarp and seeds; (5) pecking through the pericarp on the top of fruits, and only eating seeds. These foraging patterns have different effects on seed dispersal of H. rhamnoides spp. sinensis. The germination experiment of three groups of seeds (seeds from feces, dry fruits and extracted seeds from dry fruits) was carried out. Although ingestion processes of birds had some adverse effects on the seed germination of H. rhamnoides spp. sinensis, the seeds from feces still have a relatively higher germination ratio. H. rhamnoides spp. sinensis provides food to a variety of frugivorous birds, and the birds disperse its seeds. Considerable variation in the duration of serotiny exists among species of both Australian and South African Proteaceae. ‘Weak’ serotiny (pre‐fire loss after <3 years) could be dictated by the costs (water or carbon) of cone/fruit retention or by benefits accruing from pre‐fire seed establishment. We determined that cones/fruits of a range of Australian and south western Cape Proteaceae species (Leucadendron xanthoconus, Aulax umbellata, L. linifolium, L. gandogeri, Hakea drupacea, H. sericea) are not sealed dead wood, but that they continuously lose H2O and CO2. Water loss from cones/fruits was poorly controlled, occurring in both light and dark. The rates of both H2O and CO2 loss from mature cones/fruits were negatively correlated with the degree of serotiny (r2 = 0.59 and 0.18, respectively, P < 0.001 both). However, the amounts of H2O and CO2 lost per weight were small relative to the fluxes from leaves (13–29% for H2O and 3–10% for CO2). The [N] and [P] in the cones/fruits and seeds was substantial. Despite 25% of N and 38% of P being recovered from the cones/fruits following maturation, the loss of the cones/fruits and seeds would still incur a substantial nutrient cost. The seed [P] was positively correlated with the degree of serotiny (r2 = 0.24, P = 0.001). We suggest that maintenance costs (water and carbon) of serotiny, although exceeding those of soil stored seeds, are relatively low. The correlation between the degree of serotiny and seed [P] indicates that stronger serotiny is required, much like sclerophylly, for survival under low nutrient availability in frequently burnt vegetation.  相似文献

We studied avian dispersal of seeds from the hemiparasitic mistletoe Plicosepalus acaciae (Loranthaceae) to its tree hosts Acacia raddiana and A. tortilis in the Syrian–African Rift (Arava) valley, Israel. The Yellow-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus xanthopygos) was the sole avian visitor observed feeding on mistletoe fruits. Bulbuls consumed mistletoe fruits whenever they were available, but the fruits only constituted a significant portion of the diet (71% of foraging attempts) when they were most abundant. These birds are potentially good dispersal vectors of P. acaciae because they swallowed the fruit whole and defecated viable seeds that were covered in a viscid pulp, which allowed the seeds to adhere to substrates when voided. In addition, bulbuls spent a large proportion (66–93%) of total observation time perched in Acacia trees, allowing for directed dispersal. Ephemeral river valleys (wadis) with high mistletoe infection were adjacent to those containing no infections, demonstrating that mistletoe dispersal is common within, but not among wadis. This is consistent with the flight behaviour in bulbuls, which do not typically move among wadis. We combined data on bulbul movements between Acacia trees with transit times of mistletoe seeds to create a hypothetical seed shadow as a function of distance from the parent mistletoe plant. Because they are directed dispersers, the movement patterns of bulbuls may explain the current distribution of P. acaciae in the Arava valley.  相似文献

This study analyzes dispersal effectiveness of understory birds that feed on fruits of the tropical tree Dendropanax arboreus in a fragmented forest at Los Tuxtlas, east-central Mexico. The quantity and quality components of effectiveness were estimated in three different sites: continuous forest, 40 ha forest fragment, and 3 ha forest fragment. The quantity component was estimated through relative abundance, frequency of visits to fruits, and number of seeds in fecal samples. The quality component was estimated by analyzing germination of seeds defecated by birds and seed deposition patterns by birds. Seed deposition patterns were estimated by comparing the number of seeds found in fecal samples and the number of reproductive adults of D. arboreus in each site. Results showed that dispersal effectiveness of birds varied among sites. Turdus grayi was the most effective disperser in continuous forest, while Hylocichla mustelina was the most effective one in 40 and 3 ha forest fragments. These birds are contributing to the gene flow between fragments and continuous forest because they are able to use forest or riparian remnants, living fences, and isolated trees.  相似文献

In the frugivory networks of many arid and semi‐arid Mesoamerican ecosystems, columnar cacti act as keystone species that produce fruits with a high content of water and nutrients attractive to numerous vertebrates. The aim of this investigation was to assess the fruit removal patterns of two guilds of frugivores on the fruits of the woolly torch Pilosocereus leucocephalus. We assessed fruit pulp removal in two ways: by estimating the consumption of seeds given the amount of pulp removed per visit and by estimating the percentage of pulp removal over time. We put exclosures on unripe, intact fruits to keep frugivores from removing material. Once ripe, we removed the exclosures and tracked animal visitation of 69 fruits using camera traps. We obtained a total of 2,162 hr of footage (14:47 hours of them with effective pulp removal). The highest number of visitors is that of diurnal species (n = 12, all birds) versus only four nocturnal (three bats, one rodent). The most effective species in pulp removal are birds. Bats play a modest role in frugivory of this cactus. The significance of this work is twofold: (a) birds and bats consume the fruit pulp of this cactus and likely disperse its seeds, and (b) although bats rank high in pulp removal effectiveness, birds as a guild far outweigh their importance in this system, as they are not only more frequent but also remove more pulp and seeds. Both groups are known to be important in cacti seed dispersal, and our findings are essential in understanding the population dynamics of the woolly torch and in elucidating its seed dispersal ecology.  相似文献

Birds are important granivores in the Australian arid zone, and this paper reviews their role by assembling available data on diet and habitat selection of the granivorous species occurring in the region. Paucity of dietary information is alleviated by a study of the food of the zebra finch (Poephila guttata) at two sites in the eastern arid zone. Zebra finches subsisted entirely on grass seeds of a relatively narrow specific range; 17 classes of seeds (at least 19 species) were eaten, but one class dominated the diet at each study site and only five classes (probably six species) were significant overall. Comparative information concerning granivorous species- suggested that the seeds of grasses and shrubs are of most importance in diets, that larger species tended to eat larger seeds from a wider variety of plants because of the addition of shrub species to the diet, and that Acacia shrublands contained most species. Characteristics of the arid zone that are of particular importance to granivorous birds appear to be the abundance of grasses and the patchy and erratic nature of the rainfall.  相似文献

Rooikrans Acacia cyclops is an aggressive invasive tree that threatens natural resources in South Africa. The seeds of A. cyclops have a prominent aril which attracts birds that ingest the seeds and disperse them endozoochorously. Two biological control agents, a Seed Weevil Melanterius servulus and a Flower‐galling Midge Dasineura dielsi, were released on A. cyclops in 1991 and 2002, respectively. Together these agents have substantially reduced seed production and generally far lower numbers of seeds are now available to birds. A consequence of this transition from historically bounteous quantities of seeds to scanty seed availability is that birds may no longer associate with the trees and seed dispersal may be disproportionately reduced. To assess whether this has happened, seed attrition was measured by comparing the amount of seeds that disappeared from two groups of branches, one available to birds and the other enclosed in bird netting. Other types of granivores (mainly field mice) were excluded from both groups of branches with a plastic funnel placed around the stems. Mature seeds were also harvested and fed to caged bird species to determine gut retention times and germination rates of ingested seeds. Attrition rates of seeds showed that birds continue to remove seeds but that only a proportion of the crop is taken. Only two frugivorous species (Knysna Turaco Tauraco corythaix and Red‐winged Starling Onychognathus morio) and two granivorous species (Red‐eyed Dove Streptopelia semitorquata and Laughing Dove Streptopelia sengalensis) ingested A. cyclops seeds during feeding trials. Ingestion by birds enhanced seed germination except for those ingested by Laughing Doves. There were no apparent effects of length of gut passage time and avian body size on seed germination rates. Despite the diminished seed resource due to biological control agents, birds continue to disperse A. cyclops seeds.  相似文献
