Clonal plants of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) were grown in a controlled environment with either low or high rates of applied nitrate-N (providing, notionally, insufficient or sufficient N for unrestricted growth), or in the absence of applied N. Plants receiving no nitrate-N were inoculated with Rhizobia and fixed their own N2. All plants were maintained with a maximum of three fully unfolded leaves per apex (lenient defoliation) until day 68 when half of the plants were severely defoliated. The export and translocation of carbohydrates from the first fully unfolded main stolon leaf was measured three days later using 14C.Reduced carbon translocation to stolon tissue and roots, and increased translocation to young branches, occurred following severe defoliation in all three nitrogen treatments. However, N-deficient plants showed large reductions in total export of carbohydrates (44 vs. 17% of 14C assimilated for lenient vs. severe defoliation) whereas N-sufficient plants (either receiving nitrate-N or fixing their own N2) showed small increases in total export (means of 54% vs. 62% in the respective defoliation treatments). Furthermore, carbohydrate translocation to old branches ceased altogether in severely defoliated, N-deficient plants, but increased in severely defoliated, N-sufficient plants, illustrating that plant responses to multiple-factor stresses may differ greatly from those seen as the result of single-factor stresses. Interactions between nitrogen nutrition and defoliation in total carbohydrate export, and in carbohydrate supply to old branches, could have serious negative effects on the short-term C economy and physiological integration, and hence on the adaptability, of clonal plants growing with a mineral deficiency in the presence of grazing animals.  相似文献

The growth, morphology and carbon allocation patterns of F1progeny white clover (Trifolium repens L.) plants selected foreither low (‘LBF’) or high (‘HBF’) frequencyof stolon branching were compared in two controlled-environmentexperiments. Selections from within both a small-leaved (‘GrasslandsTahora’) and a large-leaved (‘Grasslands Kopu’)clover cultivar were compared, and plants were grown under arelatively lenient defoliation treatment (expt 1) or under threelevels of defoliation seventy (expt 2). Carbon allocation patternswere measured by 14CO2 pulse-chase labelling using fully unfoldedleaves on the main (parent) stolon. LBF and HBF displayed consistent differences in the selectedcharacter though, within cultivars, the difference between selectionswas most pronounced for Kopu. The selections developed fundamentallydifferent branching structures resulting from differences inbranching frequency, with total branch weight per plant averaging122 mg for LBF and 399 mg for HBF (mean of both experiments).More C moved from parent stolon leaves to branches in HBF thanin LBF (mean 22.6% vs. 15.1% respectively of the 14C exportedfrom source leaves). More C also moved to stolon tissue in HBF,but, counterbalancing this and the difference in allocationto branches, less moved to developing leaves and roots on theparent stolon itself compared to LBF. However, the total weightof developing leaves and roots per parent stolon was generallygreater in HBF than in LBF, probably reflecting greater C importby these sinks from the higher number of branches present perplant in the former selection. HBF plants were consistentlylarger at harvest than LBF plants. There were no defoliationtreatment x selection interactions in C allocation patternsin expt 2. The implications of the results for plant performancein grazed pastures are discussed. Branching, carbon translocation, defoliation, growth, morphology, Trifolium repens, white clover  相似文献

The Carbon Economy of Clonal Plants of Trifolium repens L.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Fluxes of carbon between sources and sinks were quantified forclonal plants of Trifolium repens L. (cv. Blanca) in two glasshouseexperiments. Carbon sources were (a) leaves on the parent (=main)stolon apex, or (b) leaves on either young or old branches, and the major sinks of interest were the parent stolon apex, branches, and the adventitious root arising at the same parentstolon node as a young source branch. Defoliation treatmentswere applied to the parent stolon and/or branches (excludingsource branches). Carbon moved freely from the parent stolon to branches and vice-versa;these bidirectional exchanges of C provided important supplementarysources of carbohydrate for the sinks and buffered them againstthe effects of defoliation. Young branches exported more C tothe parent plant (mean=6.3µmol d–1) than they importedfrom leaves on the parent stolon (5·2µmol d–1)which, in turn, exceeded the amount fixed by leaves on the branchand utilized within the branch itself (2·7µmold–1). In contrast, the C economy of old branches was largelyself-contained with, on average, 25·4µmol d–1exported to the parent plant, 1·8µmol d–1imported from the parent, and 63·0µmol d–1fixed and utilized by the branch itself. Thus the growth ofyoung branches was immediately reduced by removal of parentstolon leaves, but old branches were unaffected. An estimated 42% of the C utilized by the main stolon apex originatedfrom branches, while by far the largest proportion (84%) ofthe C used for growth of young nodal roots originated from theassociated branch and not from leaves on the parent stolon towhich the root was directly attached. The assimilation of carbon (C) by, and distribution of 14C from, leaves at each end of an unbroken sequence of ten mature leaveson the main stolon of clonal plants of white clover (Trifoliumrepens L.) were measured to identify intra-plant factors determiningthe direction of C movement from leaves. Leaves at two intermediatepositions were also measured. Localized movement of 14C to sinks at the same node as, or atthe one to two nodes immediately behind, the fed leaf accountedfor 40–50% of the total 14C exported by all measured leaves.A further 50–60% of exported 14C was therefore availablefor more-distant sinks, and the direction of translocation ofthis C was determined by the relative total strength or demand(number x size x rate of activity or growth) of sinks forwardof, or behind, the leaf in question. Thus 85% of the 14C exportedfrom the youngest measured leaf moved toward the base of thestolon, while about 60% of the 14C exported from the oldestleaf moved acropetally. Defoliating plants to leave just one mature leaf on the mainstolon (at any one of the same four positions studied in undefoliatedplants), and no leaves on branches, resulted in: (1) increasednet photosynthetic rate in all residual leaves: (2) increased%export of fixed C from one of the four leaves; (3) increasedexport to the main stolon apex from all except the eldest leaf;(4) increased export to branches from three of the four leaves;and (5) decreased export to stolon tissue and roots from allleaves, within 3 d of defoliation. These responses would seemto ensure the fastest possible replacement of lost leaf areaand, thus, restoration of homeostatic growth. The observed patternsof C assimilation and distribution in both undefoliated anddefoliated white clover plants are consistent with the generalrules of source-sink theory; the distance between sources andcompeting sinks, and relative sink strength, emerge as the mostimportant intra-plant factors governing C movement. These resultsemphasize the need to consider plant morphology, and the modularnature of plant growth, when interpreting patterns of resourceallocation in clonal plants, or plant responses to stressessuch as partial defoliation. The fourth fully expanded leaf on the main stolon of white cloverplants was exposed to 14CO2. Thereafter, quantitative and fractionalanalysis of the partitioning, storage and remobilization afterdefoliation of the 14C labelled assimilate was sequentiallyconducted over a 2- to 3-week period. In undefoliated plants, most 14C reached its final destinationwithin 24 h of feeding. Forty percent of assimilated 14C waslost through respiration, while the rest was exported, predominantlyto meristems, but also to roots, stolons and leaves. The 14Cinitially translocated to meristems was subsequently recoveredin stolon and leaf tissue as the plants matured. Approximately 10% of assimilated 14C was invested into long-termstorage in roots and stolons. These reserves were remobilizedafter both partial and total defoliation, and a portion of theremobilized 14C was incorporated into new growth, Partly defoliatedplants regrew more rapidly than totally defoliated plants, butmore 14C reserve depletion took place in the totally defoliatedtreatment. Reserve depletion took place from both stolons androots, but stolon reserves were preferentially utilized. Bothhigh and low molecular weight storage compounds were involved. To assess genotypic variability in nutrient supply of shoot branches, the distribution of 32P and 45Ca exported from a source nodal root (24-h uptake period) was measured within a genotype of a large-leaved (Kopu) and a small-leaved (Tahora) cultivar of Trifolium repens. Source-sink relationships of plants were modified by root severance, defoliation, and shade treatments. In control plants of both genotypes distribution of 32P and 45Ca closely followed the pathways that could be predicted from the known phyllotactic constraints on the vascular system. As such there was little allocation of radioisotopes (3.1% and 2.5% of exported 32P and 45Ca, respectively) from the source root to branches on the apposite side of the parent axis (far-side branches). However, genotypic differences in nutrient allocation were apparent, when treatments were imposed to alter intra-plant source-sink relationships. In the large-leaved genotype, the imposed treatments had minor effects on the allocation to far-side branches: whereas, in the small-leaved genotype, root severance and defoliation treatments increased lateral transport to far-side branches to 30% (32P) and 10% (45Ca) of exported radioisotopes. Genotypes with low (8–9) and high (12–13) numbers of vascular bundles were selected from within the large-leaved cultivar. Distribution of 32P was then measured after plants had been pre-treated by removal of all far-side roots two days prior to labelling. Genotypes with low vascular bundle number allocated 20% and those with high vascular bundle number 3.2% of exported 32P to far-side branches. It was concluded (1) that genotypic variation exists within T. repens for potential to alter intra-plant allocation of mineral nutrients, in response to treatments that modify source-sink relationships within plants; and (2) that this variation is correlated with differences among genotypes in the organisation of the vasculature of their stolons.  相似文献

A technique for reliable labeling of the carbon reserves of the trunk and roots without labeling the current year's growth of grapevines was developed in order to study retranslocation of carbon from the perennial storage tissues into the fruit in response to defoliation stress during the ripening period. A special training system with two shoots was used: the lower one (feeding shoot) was cut back and defoliated to one single leaf (14CO2-feeding leaf) while the other (main shoot) was topped to 12 leaves. The potted plants were placed in a water bath at 30 °C to increase root temperature and therefore their sink activity. Additionally, a cold barrier (2–4 °C) was installed at the base of the main shoot to inhibit acropetal 14C translocation. Using this method, we were able to direct labeled assimilates to trunk and roots in preference to the current year's growth. On vines with root and shoot at ambient temperature, 44% of the 14C activity was found in the main shoot 16 h after feeding whereas only 2% was found in the temperature-treated vines. At the onset of fruit ripening, and at three-week intervals thereafter until harvest, potted grapevines were fed with 14CO2 using the temperature treatment described above. Sixteen hours after feeding, half of the vines of each group were defoliated by removing all except the two uppermost main leaves. Three weeks after each treatment, vines were destructively harvested and the dry weight and 14C incorporation determined for all plant parts. Under non-stressing conditions, there was no retranslocation of carbon reserves to support fruit maturation. Vines responded to defoliation stress by altering the natural translocation pattern and directing carbon stored in the lower parts to the fruit. In the three weeks following veraison (the inception of ripening in the grape berry), 12% of the labeled carbon reserves was translocated to the fruit of defoliated plants compared to 1.6% found in the clusters of control vines. Retranslocation from trunk and roots was highest during the middle of the ripening period, when 32% of the labeled carbon was found in the fruit compared to 0.7% in control plants. Defoliation during this period also caused major changes in dry-matter partitioning: the fruit represented 31% of total plant biomass compared to 21% measured in the control vines. Root growth was reduced by defoliation at veraison and during the ripening period. Defoliation three weeks before harvest did not affect dry matter or 14C partitioning.  相似文献

In order to improve the basis for utilising nitrogen (N) fixed by white clover (Trifolium repens L.) in northern agriculture, we studied how defoliation stress affected the N contents of major plant organs in late autumn, N losses during the winter and N accumulation in the following spring. Plants were established from stolon cuttings and transplanted to pots that were dug into the field at Apelsvoll Research Centre (60°42′ N, 10°51′ E) and at Holt Research Centre (69°40′ N, 18°56′ E) in spring 2001 and 2002. During the first growing season, the plants were totally stripped of leaves down to the stolon basis, cut at 4 cm height or left undisturbed. The plants were sampled destructively in late autumn, early spring the second year and after 6 weeks of new spring growth. The plant material was sorted into leaves, stolons and roots. Defoliation regime did not influence the total amount of leaf N harvested during and at the end of the first growing season. However, for intensively defoliated plants, the repeated leaf removal and subsequent regrowth occurred at the expense of stolon and root development and resulted in a 61–85% reduction in the total plant N present in late autumn and a 21–59% reduction in total accumulation of plant N (plant N present in autumn + previously harvested leaf N). During the winter, the net N loss from leaf tissue (N not recovered in living nor dead leaves in the spring) ranged from 57% to 74% of the N present in living leaves in the autumn, while N stored in stolons and roots was much better conserved. However, the winter loss of stolon N from severely defoliated plants (19%) was significantly larger than from leniently defoliated (12%) and non-defoliated plants (6%). Moreover, the fraction of stolon N determined as dead in the spring was 63% for severely defoliated as compared to 14% for non-defoliated plants. Accumulation in absolute terms of new leaf N during the spring was highly correlated to total plant N in early spring (R2 = 0.86), but the growth rates relative to plant N present in early spring were not and, consequently, were similar for all treatments. The amount of inorganic N in the soil after snowmelt and the N uptake in plant root simulator probes (PRSTM) during the spring were small, suggesting that microbial immobilisation, leaching and gas emissions may have been important pathways for N lost from plant tissue.  相似文献

Single plants of white clover (Trifolium repens) were establishedfrom stolon cuttings rooted in acid-washed silver sand. Allplants were inoculated with Rhizobium trifolii, and receivednutrient solution containing 0·5 mg 15N as either ammoniumor nitrate weekly for 12 weeks (i.e. 6 mg 15N in total). Plantswere then leniently defoliated or left intact, and the labelledN supply was replaced with unlabelled N. Lenient defoliationremoved fully expanded leaves only, leaving immature leaveswhich accounted for 50–55% of the total; growing pointnumbers were not reduced. Nodules, leaves and growing pointswere counted over the following 21 d period, and d. wts, N contents, and 15N enrichments of individual plant organs were determined. Defoliated plants had fewer nodules, but numbers of growingpoints were unaffected by defoliation. The rates of both leafemergence and expansion were accelerated in defoliated plants;in consequence the number of young leaves remained less thanin intact plants until day 21. Total dry matter (DM) and N accumulationwere less in defoliated plants, and a greater proportion oftotal plant DM was invested in roots. About 97 % of plant totalN was derived from fixed atmospheric N, but there was incompletemixing of fixed and mineral N within the plant. Relatively moremineral N was incorporated into roots, whereas there was relativelymore fixed N in nodules. There was isotopic evidence that Nwas remobilized from root and stolon tissue for leaf regrowthafter defoliation; approximately 2 % of plant N turned overdaily in the 7-d period after defoliation, and this contributedabout 50% of the N increment in leaf tissue. Hedysarum laeve, a rhizomatous clonal half-shrub, commonly dominates in inland dunes in semiarid areas of northern China. This species propagates vegetatively by the extension of horizontal rhizomes resulting in programmed reiteration of apical and/or axillary meristems. In this study, 14C labeling and experimental defoliation were employed to test the photosynthate translocation within the interconnected parent–daughter ramet pairs. A proportion of 14C-photosynthates was transported from the parent ramet into the daughter ramet, the roots of the daughter ramet, and the rhizome; these three components showed more than 70% sink activity after 24-h translocation. On the other hand, the basipetal translocation (from daughter ramet into parent ramet) was relatively small with sink activity of less than 5%, but sink activity of the rhizome exceeded 10%. Defoliation had an influence on the photosynthate translocation between parent and daughter ramets. The intact parent ramets significantly increased their 14C-photosynthate translocation into defoliated daughter ramets when compared to intact daughter ramets. The daughter ramets transported significantly more 14C-photosynthates to the defoliated parent ramets than to the intact parent ramets. A portion of 14C-photosynthates was transported into the rhizome from both parent and daughter ramets, indicating that the rhizome is supported by both ramets for photosynthates. The clonal integration between ramets of the species through rhizome connection may confer benefit both to the ramets and the genet in adverse environments. Summary Two perennial tussock grasses of savannas were compared in a glasshouse study to determine why they differed in their ability to withstand frequent, heavy grazing; Cenchrus ciliaris is tolerant and Themeda triandra is intolerant of heavy grazing. Frequent defoliation at weekly intervals for six weeks reduced shoot biomass production over a subsequent 42 day regrowth period compared with previously undefoliated plants (infrequent) in T. triandra, but not in C. ciliaris. Leaf area of T. triandra expanded rapidly following defoliation but high initial relative growth rates of shoots were not sustained after 14 days of regrowth because of reducing light utilising efficiency of leaves. Frequently defoliated plants were slower in rate of leaf area expansion and this was associated with reduced photosynthetic capacity of newly formed leaves, lower allocation of photosynthate to leaves but not lower tiller numbers. T. triandra appears well adapted to a regime where defoliation is sufficiently infrequent to allow carbon to be fixed to replace that used in initial leaf area expansion. In contrast, C. ciliaris is better adapted to frequent defoliation than is T. triandra, because horizontally orientated nodal tillers are produced below the defoliation level. This morphological adaptation resulted in a 10-fold higher leaf area remaining after defoliation compared with similarly defoliated T. triandra, which together with the maintenance of moderate levels of light utilising efficiency, contributed to the higher leaf area and shoot weight throughout the regrowth period.  相似文献

The allocation of carbon to shoots, roots, soil and rhizosphere respiration in barrel medic (Medicago truncatulaGaertn.) before and after defoliation was determined by growing plants in pots in a labelled atmosphere in a growth cabinet. Plants were grown in a 14CO2-labelled atmosphere for 30 days, defoliated and then grown in a 13CO2-labelled atmosphere for 19 days. Allocation of 14C-labelled C to shoots, roots, soil and rhizosphere respiration was determined before defoliation and the allocation of 14C and 13C was determined for the period after defoliation. Before defoliation, 38.4% of assimilated C was allocated below ground, whereas after defoliation it was 19.9%. Over the entire length of the experiment, the proportion of net assimilated carbon allocated below ground was 30.3%. Of this, 46% was found in the roots, 22% in the soil and 32% was recovered as rhizosphere respiration. There was no net translocation of assimilate from roots to new shoot tissue after defoliation, indicating that all new shoot growth arose from above-ground stores and newly assimilated carbon. The rate of rhizosphere respiration decreased immediately after defoliation, but after 8 days, was at comparable levels to those before defoliation. It was not until 14 days after defoliation that the amount of respiration from newly assimilated C (13C) exceeded that of C assimilated before defoliation (14C). This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Single plants of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) were grownfrom stolon cuttings rooted in sand. All plants were inoculatedwith Rhizobium trifolii, and for 14 weeks received nutrientsolution containing 0.5 mg N each week, as either ammonium ornitrate. Plants were then leniently defoliated or were leftintact and a 15N-labelled N source was applied at intervalsof 4 d to replace the unlabelled N. Lement defoliation removedfully expanded leaves only; the remaining immature leaves accountedfor 39–44% of the total. At harvests over the following21 d, leaf numbers were counted and dry matter (DM), N contentsand 15N enrichments of individual plant organs were determined. Rates of leaf emergence and expansion were accelerated in defoliatedplants; numbers of young leaves were similar in defoliated andintact plants. Total DM and N content were less in defoliatedthan intact plants and were not affected by form of N supplied.DM of young leaves, growing points and stolons and N contentof young leaves were, however, greater when ammonium ratherthan nitrate N was supplied. Rates of increase in the contentof plant total N were 8.2 ± 1.36 mg N d-1 and 10.2±1.82 mg N d-1 in defoliated and intact plants respectively. The increases were predominantly due to N2 fixation, since recoveryof 15N showed that less than 1% of the increment in plant totalN was assimilated mineral N. Nevertheless, the contributionof mineral N to plant total N was 50% more in defoliated thanin intact plants; higher amounts of mineral N were found particularlyin young leaves and growing points. Partitioning of mineralN to nodulated roots increased over time and was greater whenammonium rather than nitrate N was present. White clover, Trifolium repens L. cv. Detailed analysis of the interrelationships between sourcesof photosynthate production and sites of utilization in thetaxonomically closely related species Ranunculus bulbosus L.and R. repens L. showed that leaves whether present on rosette, stem, or stolon had similar levels of 14CO2-fixation but thepattern of distribution of radiocarbon to the rest of the plantdiffered. Fruits of R. bulbosus had a lower fixation rate thanleaves but were characterized by total retention of the fixedradiocarbon. Rosette leaves of R. bulbosus supplied the youngleaves, developing apices in the rosette, roots, and corms, whereas the labelled assimilates from cauline leaves were evenlydistributed between reproductive and vegetative parts. The cormwas the major sink both at the flowering and fruiting stages. When plants were treated with 14CO2 in the field even higherlevels of radiocarbon moved into the corm than in comparableexperiments under greenhouse conditions. The rosette leaf ofR. repens exported mainly to actively growing stolons in plantswith many stolons bearing rooted ramets although growth of astolon was also substantially supported by photosynthates producedby its own ramets. A proportion of the radiocarbon fixed byleaves of mature ramets was exported and moved in a predominantlyacropetal direction into the stolon apex, stolon axis, and youngramets of the same stolon. The stock in R. repens had a muchlower demand for assimilates than the corm in R. bulbosus. The results are consistent with the concept that R. bulbosusoperates a conservative policy involving the replacement ofthe parent in situ by a daughter from the corm, coupled withextensive fruit production. In R. repens the emphasis is onlateral spread and exploitation of substantial areas of groundby vegetative spread and replacement of the parent by daughtersmany of which may occupy sites some distance from the parent.  相似文献

Patterns of carbon integration in aclonal species are poorly understood in spite of their potential to influence individual fitness. To provide more information about these patterns, we performed a defoliation experiment with P. aristata. We examined, at the metameric level, the reproductive responses to the removal of the major carbon sources within metamers. Bracts on marked reproductive spikes and leaves subtending these spikes were removed at three stages of reproductive maturity: spike elongation, flowering, and fruiting. Spike dry weight and length, capsule number, seeds per capsule, and seed weight were measured. We tested the hypothesis that seed weight would respond least to defoliation. We also performed a complementary 14C translocation experiment to measure the amount of radioactive carbon moving into the marked spikes from outside the metamer. Defoliation depressed all components of reproduction within marked spikes, and little 14C was translocated from outside the metamer into the reproductive spikes, even those that were defoliated. Both results support the view that reproductive metamers in this species are largely autonomous with respect to their carbon budget. Defoliation during spike elongation most depressed reproduction, and bract removal depressed reproduction more than did leaf removal. The data suggest that bracts compensate for leaf removal by increasing their photosynthetic rate; however, the ability to compensate differs among plant populations. Of all the reproductive components, seed weight was least affected by defoliation. The data show, however, that the time of defoliation relative to reproductive development influences which reproductive components are affected.  相似文献

In this study the influence of nitrogen nutrition on the patterns of carbon distribution was investigated with Urtica dioica. The nettles were grown in sand culture at 3 levels of NO?3, namely 3 (low), 15 (medium) and 22 (high) mM. These levels encompassed a range within which nitrogen did not affect total biomass production. The ratio of root: shoot biomass of the low nitrogen plants was, however, significantly higher than that of the nettles grown at medium and high N supply. Carbon allocation from one leaf of each pair of leaves was examined after a 14CO2-pulse and a subsequent 14C distribution period of one night. Only the youngest two leaf pairs did not export assimilates. Carbon (14C) export to the shoot apex and to the roots, as measured at the individual nodes responded to the nitrogen status: At medium and high nitrogen supply the 3rd, 4th and 5th leaf pairs exported to the shoot apex, while lower leaves exported to the root. At low nitrogen supply only the 3rd leaf exported towards the shoot apex. The results illustrate the plastic response of carbon distribution patterns to the nitrogen supply, even when net photosynthesis, carbon export from the source leaves and biomass production were not affected by the nitrogen supply to the plant.  相似文献

A quantitative analysis of the 14C-labelled assimilate suppliedby the expanded leaves on the primary shoot to growing leaves, stem, lateral shoots (branches or stolons) and roots in redand white clover was conducted during vegetative growth. Stem growth of the primary shoot was inhibited in both cloversand utilized no energy resources. The growing leaves at theprimary shoot apex of white clover imported 4 per cent of theshoot's assimilate compared with 10 per cent in red clover. At the basal end of the primary shoot, the tap root of whiteclover imported 16 per cent of the shoot's assimilate comparedwith 22 per cent in red clover. Branches in red clover and stolonsin white clover were by far the largest sinks for primary shootassimilate, importing 39 per cent and 63 per cent of the labelledassimilate, respectively. Analyses of the translocation of assimilate from individualprimary shoot leaves demonstrated that in both clovers olderleaves exported more of their assimilate to branches or stolons, whereas younger leaves exported more of their assimilate toroots, and possibly in white clover, to growing leaves at thetip of the shoot. Of the labelled assimilate exported to branchesor stolons, each primary shoot leaf exported preferentiallyto the branch or stolon in its own axil, but in addition exportedsubstantial quantities of assimilate to all other axillary shoots, particularly those arising from basal axils where the subtendingleaf had died. The source:sink ratio of clonal white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) plants was manipulated by shading or removing leaves, and the consequences for carbon export from, and for the weight, area and net photosynthesis of, developing leaves were determined. When treatments were imposed just before young leaves usually change from C sinks to C sources, no effect on the point at which the sink-to-source transition occurred was observed, Leaves exported a similar proportion of the C they fixed, irrespective of stresses imposed upon the rest of the plant. However, differences in the destination of exported C were observed. More C moved to the stolon apex, and less to the stolon tissue itself, from leaves at Carlson stage 0.8 (leaflets about 60% unfolded) when mature leaves were removed or shaded. When 2 out of 3 mature leaves were removed from a stolon, short-term responses such as a 10% increase in net photosynthesis of the residual mature leaf, and greater export of C from this leaf to the apex, partially compensated very young leaves for loss of C supply. The result was that, when these young leaves were fully unfolded, they had similar surface area to those which had developed on undefoliated plants, but weighed nearly 20% less. Thus the immediate response to defoliation was an increase in the speeific leaf area [cm2 (g of dry weight)−1] of new leaves, and the assimilation rate (net photosynthesis×area) of these leaves remained unchanged.  相似文献

The causes of sectoriality and consequences for clone behaviour are examined using data from the stoloniferous herb Glechoma hederacea. The proximal causes of physiological integration patterns are investigated using anatomical studies, acid fuchsin dye to reveal patterns of xylem continuity between ramets, and 14C as a label to reveal quantitative photoassimilate translocation patterns in the phloem. Dye movement in the xylem was acropetal and sectorial, and the sectoriality was determined by phyllotaxy. Patterns of 14C-labelled photoassimilate allocation were qualitatively similar to those of xylem based resources, although there was some basipetal movement of photoassimilate. The patterns of physiological integration and independence between ramets are shown to be governed by rules which depend on vascular continuity and discontinuity between ramets. Physiological support to stolon apices results in acquisition of relative branch autonomy (branches become semi-autonomous integrated physiological units, IPUs).This paper evaluates whether observed physiological integration patterns may be modified by altering normal source-sink relationships or by modifying environmental conditions. An experiment using different defoliation intensities, and different defoliation patterns at the same overall intensity, demonstrated that the precise positions of leaves removed from a clone had unique consequences for its subsequent development. Individual ramets of a given clone may be located in microhabitats of differing quality. An experiment in which competition was either present or absent throughout the space occupied by the clone, or patchy in distribution, showed that G. hederacea did not respond to competition at the whole clone level. Instead, connected stolons (IPUs) responded independently to local competition. Sectoriality may promote the restriction of lethal, localised environmental factors within the affected IPU. A study investigating the uptake and translocation of zinc by clones revealed that quantified patterns of zinc distribution resembled patterns of 14C movement in the phloem, and that there was no significant transport of zinc from one stolon to another.Although sectorial patterns of resource movement in G. hederacea can be modified in the short term, in the long-term, physiological integration may not allow this species to integrate the effects of environmental heterogeneity. A mobile clonal species with a high growth rate and relatively short-lived ramets, such as G. hederacea, is likely to benefit from a semi-autonomous response to patch quality at the level of the stolon, since the alternative of widespread intra-clonal support may increase the residence time of the clone in unfavourable pathches.  相似文献

Long-term carbon dioxide enrichment, 14CO2 feeding, and partial defoliation were employed as probes to investigate source/sink limitations of photosynthesis during the development of symbiotically grown alfalfa. In the mature crop, long-term CO2 enrichment does not affect the rates of net photosynthesis, relative growth, 14C export to nonphotosynthetic organs, or the rates of 14C label incorporation into leaf sucrose, starch, or malate. The rate of glycolate labeling is, however, substantially reduced under these conditions. When the mature crop was partially defoliated, a considerable increase in net photosynthesis occurred in the remaining leaves. In the seedling crop, long-term CO2 enrichment increased dry matter accumulation, primarily as a result of increases in leaf starch content. Although the higher rates of starch synthesis are not maintained, the growth enhancement of the enriched plants persisted throughout the experimental period. These results imply a source limitation of seedling photosynthesis and a sink limitation of photosynthesis in more mature plants. Consequently, both the supply and the utilization of photosynthate may limit seasonal photosynthesis in alfalfa.  相似文献
