Development time, reproduction, survival and sex ratio were determined for the omnivorous mite Amblyseius swirskii at nine constant temperatures (13, 15, 18, 20, 25, 30, 32, 34 and 36°C) on pepper leaf disks with cattail, Typha latifolia, pollen for food. These data were used to derive life table parameters at these constant temperatures. No development was observed at 13°C. The lower development threshold, based on the fit to the linear portion of the development curve, was 11.3°C. The upper development threshold was 37.4 ± 1.12°C, and the optimum temperature was calculated to be 31.5°C. Average lifetime fecundity ranged from a low of 1.3 ± 0.24 eggs/female at 15°C to a high of 16.1 ± 0.34 eggs/female at 25°C, and r m was greatest at 32°C. Non-linear regression of the relationship between temperature and r m produced an estimate of 15.49 ± 0.905°C for the lower threshold for population growth and 36.99 ± 0.816°C for the upper threshold for population growth, and an optimum temperature of 30.1°C. These values suggest that A. swiskii populations should grow quickly in response to food availability (pollen or prey) between 20 and 32°C, but that, especially below 20°C, population growth could be slow and impacts on prey populations should be monitored carefully.  相似文献

Ninety‐nine swordspine snook Centropomus ensiferus (9.80 ± 0.3 g, mean ± SE) were studied in order to evaluate the influence of salinity on physiological properties under rearing conditions. Growth performance, survival rates, and ion concentrations (Na+, K+, Cl?) as well proximal composition were measured over 76 days. Fish were exposed to three experimental salinities (0, 10, 20 ‰ , three replicates per treatment) and maintained in plastic tanks with a recirculation system equipped with flow‐through aquaria pumps (533 L per tank). Fish were fed twice daily to apparent satiation; at the end of the experiment the weight of fish kept in 10 ‰ was higher than that of fish kept in 0 and 20 ‰ , however no significant differences (P > 0.05) were observed among the experimental salinities. Survival was significantly lower in 10 ‰ salinity than in fish kept in 20 and 0 ‰ salinities. No significant differences (P > 0.05) were found in the Condition factor (K), specific growth rate (SGR), or in plasma Na+, K+, or Cl? concentrations among treatments. Salinities also did not affect body composition (P > 0.05), but were significantly lower (P < 0.05) than at the start of the experiment. However, towards the end of the experiment a large accumulation of visceral fat in fish farmed in the three salinities (VFI > 4%) was observed. Water quality was within the optimum range (T: 28.7 ± 0.1°C; O2: 5.6 ± 0.1 mg L?1; ammonia: 0.2 mg L?1) for the growth of swordspine snook. Data indicates that Censiferus is an ionoregulator fish and able to cultivate successfully in various osmotic conditions, and in turn, maintain high levels of survival in captivity.  相似文献

The biological control of Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell) on citrus can be achieved with periodic releases of the parasitoid Aphytis melinus DeBach. A. melinus is normally reared on parthenogenetic strains of the scale Aspidiotus nerii Bouché. The developmental rate, crawler production and survival of A. nerii were studied at two temperatures (25±1 and 30±1°C) and two levels of relative humidity (RH; 55±5 and 85±5%) on squash. Temperature had an important effect on developmental rate, but RH did not. At 30°C, no growth was observed and no crawlers were produced. At 25°C, development of the L1, L2 and young females’ stages required 24.4±0.7, 11.1±0.8 and 13.2±0.3 days, respectively. At 25°C, times until the appearance of mature females, the start of crawler production and the peak of crawler production were 48.7±0.1, 50.1±0.7 and 63.3±1.0 days, respectively. Crawler production lasted 42.6±1.9 days, and the 50% production level was reached on day 13. Initially, crawler survival was higher at 30°C (65.9±2.8%) than at 25°C (51.7±4.8%), but by the end of development survival was much higher at 25 than 30°C (88.0±2.1 vs. 22.9±2.7%). RH had no effect on either initial or final survival. Average progeny production was of 28.0±2.8 crawlers per female at 25°C. The relationship between the weight of groups of crawlers and their number was: Number=1031+835,500×weight of group (g) (R 2=0.826), which can assist in colony management. The importance of selecting the correct strain of A. nerii is emphasised.  相似文献

A complementary approach of stomach content and stable isotope analyses was used to characterize the foraging ecology and evaluate niche overlap between pygmy (Kogia breviceps) and dwarf (K. sima) sperm whales stranded on the U.S. mid‐Atlantic coast between 1998 and 2011. Food habits analysis demonstrated both species were primarily teuthophagous, with 35 species of cephalopods, and 2 species of mesopelagic fishes represented in their overall diets. Pianka's Index of niche overlap suggested high overlap between whale diets (On = 0.92), with squids from the families Histioteuthidae, Cranchidae, and Ommastrephidae serving as primary prey. Pygmy sperm whales consumed slightly larger prey sizes (mean mantle length [ML] = 10.8 cm) than dwarf sperm whales (mean ML = 7.8 cm). Mean prey sizes consumed by pygmy sperm whales increased with growth, but showed no trend in dwarf sperm whales. Significant differences were not detected in δ15N and δ13C values of muscle tissues from pygmy (10.8‰ ± 0.5‰, ?17.1‰ ± 0.6‰), and dwarf sperm whales (10.7‰ ± 0.5‰, ?17.0‰ ± 0.4‰), respectively. Isotopic niche widths also did not differ significantly and dietary overlap was high between the two species. Results suggest the feeding ecologies of the pygmy and dwarf sperm whales are similar and both species occupy equivalent trophic niches in the region.  相似文献

The identification of the environmental conditions inducing different ecophysiological responses in the different strains and populations of the brine shrimp Artemia should improve the understanding of their biogeographic distribution. Nauplii from two Argentinean brine shrimp populations, Artemia persimilis from Salinas Grandes de Hidalgo (province of La Pampa) and Artemia franciscana from Laguna Mar Chiquita (province of Cordoba), were grown up until adulthood at different salinities (30, 60, 90, 120 gL−1) and temperatures (12, 21, 28°C). The aim was to assess the effects of these different conditions on prereproductive life span and reproductive traits. Results evidenced that at 21 and 28°C, at any salinity, A. franciscana from Laguna Mar Chiquita attained higher survival and fecundity, after a shorter prereproductive period, than A. persimilis from Salinas Grandes de Hidalgo. These data support that A. franciscana, considered a superspecies, exhibits higher phenotypic plasticity than A. persimilis, and that A. persimilis is better adapted to lower temperatures than A. franciscana. These differences in temperature and salinity tolerance could explain the present distribution of these two species in the South Cone in South America. Handling Editor: J. Melack  相似文献

Abstract. In this study, the impact of acclimation (1 month at 15 °C vs. breeding at 30 °C) and fluctuating thermal regimes (daily transfers from low temperatures to various higher temperatures for 2 h) on the cold tolerance of the tropical beetle, Alphitobius diaperinus Panzer (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) was examined. Acclimation increased significantly the duration of survival (Lt50) at a constant 5 °C (7.7 ± 0.3 days to 9.7 ± 0.5 days). Survival of acclimated and nonacclimated beetles increased slightly at alternating temperatures of 5 °C/10 °C or 5 °C/15 °C. When daily transfer to 20 °C was applied, survival (Lt50) was improved markedly (nonacclimated: 15.5 ± 0.7 days, acclimated: 19.6 ± 0.6 days). The higher temperatures may allow progressive repair of injuries, and the effects of chilling may be repaired completely at 25 and 30 °C, a phenomenon recorded here for the first time. It is estimated that the theoretical upper threshold of chill injury (Th) of nonacclimated beetles is 15.1 °C whereas it is shifted down to 11.2 °C in acclimated beetles, which might enable this temperature to allow effective repair of injury.  相似文献

This work aimed to study the biology of Clitostethus arcuatus (Rossi) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) under different temperatures and evaluate the optimum temperature for its mass rearing. Studies were carried out in the laboratory at four constant temperatures (15°C, 20°C, 25°C and 30°C), 75 ± 5% relative humidity and a photoperiod of 16 h light:8 h dark, in which C. arcuatus was fed ad libitum with nymphs of all instar of Aleyrodes proletella L. (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) on Brassicae oleracea L. (var. Costata). The following biological parameters were evaluated: development time and survival rates of pre-imaginal stages, adult longevity (female and male), length of the pre-oviposition and oviposition periods, fecundity, fertility and percentage of egg hatching. Population growth parameters, the lower development threshold and the sum of effective temperatures were estimated. Temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C were suitable for the development of C. arcuatus, suggesting that this species is well adapted to the temperatures usually found inside greenhouses or in open fields in temperate regions. Although the intrinsic rate of natural increase and doubling time were similar at 25°C and 30°C, the temperature of 25°C was shown to be the most suitable for mass rearing and development of populations under field conditions, since the percentage of egg hatching and the accumulated survival rates of the pre-imaginal stages were the highest. Considering the estimated lower threshold for pre-imaginal development (7.9°C) and the sum of effective temperatures [293.6 degree-days (°D)], it is predicted for Ponta Delgada (Azores, Portugal) that the first adults of C. arcuatus should emerge by the first fortnight of February and that up to 12 generations per year can occur.  相似文献

The vaquita (Phocoena sinus) is the world's most endangered cetacean and has experienced a 60% reduction in the size of its population in the past decade. Knowledge of its basic ecology is essential for developing successful management plans to protect and conserve this species. In this study, we identified vaquita foraging areas by creating an isoscape of the Upper Gulf of California (UGC) based on sediment and zooplankton carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope values. Our results confirm that this species is confined to the western region of the UGC, which is characterized by relatively high δ15N values (sediments: 10.2‰ ± 2.0‰, zooplankton: 15.8‰ ± 1.3‰), higher sea surface temperatures (~16°C–25°C), higher concentrations of silt in sediments, and the highest turbidity. In contrast, the eastern region of the UGC had relatively low sediment (7.7‰ ± 2.4‰) and zooplankton (14.6‰ ± 1.0‰) δ15N values, and the highest concentrations of sand in sediments. Our approach is an effective use of marine isoscapes over a small spatial scale (<200 km) to identify the environmental characteristics that define the critical habitat for an extremely endangered marine mammal.  相似文献

1. The objective was to determine the thermal limits for feeding and survival in the bullhead, Cottus gobio, using juveniles (total length 20–30 mm, live weight 0.5–1.5 g) from one population and adults (50–70 mm, 3.5–5.5 g) from three populations. 2. Fish were acclimated to constant temperatures (3, 7, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 27 °C) and the temperature was then changed at a rate of 1 °C /30 min to determine the critical limits for feeding, survival over 7 days (incipient lethal temperature), or survival for 10 min or less (ultimate lethal temperature). The rate of 1 °C/30 min was the optimum value from preliminary experiments, using nine rates from 0.5 °C/48 h to 18 °C h?1. As values for adults were not significantly different between populations, they were pooled to provide arithmetic means (with 95% CL) for the thermal limits at each acclimation temperature. 3. Feeding limits increased with acclimation temperature to upper and lower mean values (± 95% CL) of 26.5 ± 0.16 °C and 4.2 ± 0.20 °C for adults, 26.6 ± 0.59 °C and 5.0 ± 0.55 °C for juveniles. Incipient lethal levels defined a tolerance zone within which fish survive indefinitely; upper limits increased with acclimation temperature to a plateau of 27.6 ± 0.22 °C for adults and 27.5 ± 0.47 °C for juveniles, lower limits increased from near 0 °C to 2.5 ± 0.31 °C for adults and 2.7 ± 0.47 °C for juveniles. Ultimate lethal levels increased with acclimation temperature to a plateau of 32.5 ± 0.24 °C for adults and 32.6 ± 0.46 °C for juveniles, whilst the lower limits increased from near 0 to 0.9 ± 0.29 °C. Upper feeding, incipient and ultimate lethal values were significantly lower for juveniles than those for adults at acclimation temperatures < 20, < 20 and < 15 °C, respectively. 4. The thermal tolerance of bullheads was slightly lower than that of stone loach, similar to that of juvenile Atlantic salmon and higher than that of brown trout; the thermal limits for feeding were much wider than those for salmon or trout.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on the development and fecundity of Sancassania polyphyllae fed on tissues of Polyphylla fullo larvae was studied at 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 ± 1°C and 65 ± 10% RH in a dark incubator. Mean developmental period of immature stages decreased significantly with increasing temperatures from 15 to 30°C. Developmental periods at 30–35°C were not significantly different. The estimated lower developmental thresholds of the various immature stages ranged between 10.1 and 11.5°C. The thermal constant for the egg-to-female adult was 93.5 degree-days. The pre-oviposition, oviposition, and post-oviposition periods and female longevity were significantly longer at 15°C than at higher temperatures. Mean total and daily fecundity were the highest at 25°C, which were significantly different from those obtained at 15, 20 and 30°C. The net reproductive rate (R 0) was the highest at 25°C (588.3 ♀/♀). The longest mean generation time (T 0) occurred at 15°C (36 days) and the shortest occurred at 30°C (9.2 days). The highest intrinsic rate of increase (r m) for S. polyphyllae was observed at 25 (0.61 ♀/♀/day) and 30°C (0.62 ♀/♀/day).  相似文献

The rate of development from winter diapause to initial oviposition for Tetranychus urticae on strawberry, Fragaria × ananassa, in southwestern British Columbia, Canada, was linearly related to temperature above 9.4 ± 0.71°C. Initial oviposition (IO) in the field, defined as the day at which half of the leaflets with T. urticae also had T. urticae eggs (IO0.5), was determined for 21 populations between 1988 and 2006 by logistic curve fitting to sequential field samples. Prediction of IO0.5 required adjustment of air temperatures for the effects of cloud opacity on microclimate, otherwise predictions were 20–30 days late. A thermal summation start date of 27 November was determined by iteratively summing day-degrees (>9.4°C) from different start dates until IO0.5, for 10 calibration populations, and observing when the coefficient of variation for the mean thermal requirement was minimal. The thermal requirement for the 10 calibration populations was negatively correlated with accumulated cold-rest hours (<4.0°C). Model predictions of IO0.5 were not significantly different from the validation data. Predictions for 1954–2003 were positively correlated with the mean monthly Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) during September–December and negatively correlated with year (R 2 = 0.36, P < 0.0001), indicating some potential for prediction of IO0.5 2–3 months in advance. Estimated IO0.5 in 2003 was 12.8 days earlier than in the mid-1950s, and variation in IO0.5 related to the SOI was 25.2 days. These results may be generally applicable to other temperate arthropods that emerge at the same time as T. urticae, such as the aphids Chaetosiphon fragaefolii on strawberry, and Ericaphis fimbriata on blueberry.  相似文献

The marcoalga Ulva pertusa was cultured under (20 ± 2)°C, (20 ± 4)°C, (20 ± 6)°C, (20 ± 8)°C and (20 ± 10)°C circadian rhythms of fluctuating temperature conditions, and constant temperature of 20°C was used as the control. The growth rate of macroalga at (20 ± 2)°C, (20 ± 4)°C and (20 ± 6)°C were significantly higher than that at constant temperature of 20°C, while growth rate at (20 ± 8)°C and (20 ± 10)°C were significantly lower than that at constant temperature of 20°C. The growth rate of macroalga was a quadratic function of the thermal amplitude. Such a growth model can be described by G = β 0 + β 1(TA) + β 2(TA)2, where G represents the relative growth rate, TA is thermal amplitude in degree Celsius, β 0 is the intercept on the G axis, and β 1 and β 2 are the regression coefficients. The optimal thermal amplitude for the growth of thallus at mean temperature of 20°C was estimated to be ± 3.69°C. Analysis of biochemical composition at the final stages of thaulls growth revealed that diel fluctuating temperature caused various influences (P < 0.05). The content of chlorophyll, protein and total solute carbohydrate at (20 ± 2)°C and (20 ± 4)°C were slightly higher than those at constant temperature of 20°C, however no statistically significant differences were found among them (P > 0.05). While osmolytes (total solute carbohydrate and free proline) at (20 ± 10)°C were significantly higher than that at 20°C (P < 0.05). Therefore, more chlorophyll and carbohydrate production might account for the enhancement in the growth of macroalga at the diel fluctuating temperatures in the present study. Handling editor: S. M. The activity coefficient (1000/righting time in sec) was measured to indicate the functional state of Lytechinus variegatus (Lamarck) after exposure to combinations of temperature (22°, 28°, and 34°C) and salinity (25, 30, 35, and 40 ‰). Environmental levels of these variables were 30–33°C and 34–35 ‰. The results indicate that the species lives closer to the upper than lower lethal limits of temperature and salinity. The maximal activity coefficient (18 ± 8) was at 28°C and 35 ‰. A reduction in salinity was probably responsible for a recent mass mortality of the echinoid reported in the eastern Gulf of Mexico.  相似文献

Aim This paper reports the presence of Artemia franciscana ( Kellogg, 1906 ) in Mar Chiquita (CHI) salt lake and in Las Tunas (TUN) lagoon, as well as at a shallow lake in Salinas Grandes (Province of Córdoba) in Argentina. To date, this species has been considered absent from Argentina. This study also provides further data on the characterization of the A. franciscana populations from this area. Location Province of Córdoba (Argentina). Methods The cyst samples collected at the three hypersaline environments were measured to assess its mean diameter with a dissecting microscope. The length of the nauplii hatched from the cysts was also determined with the microscope. The adults raised from these nauplii under strictly controlled conditions were analysed for 12 morphological parameters and compared through multivariate discriminant analysis with other American populations. Fatty acids from the total lipids were analysed by gas chromatography. Reproductive compatibility was evaluated from single‐pair intraspecific and interspecific crosses of adult specimens. Results The results endorse the morphometric assimilation of the Artemia populations of this area to other American populations of the A. franciscana‘super‐species’, together with its morphometric differentiation from the species A. persimilis ( Piccinelli & Prosdocimi, 1968 ). The more conspicuous population from CHI shows cross‐fertility with A. franciscana original from San Francisco Bay (California, USA). Both populations from CHI and TUN show cross‐fertility between them and reproductive isolation with A. persimilis from Hidalgo (Province of La Pampa), which to date is considered to be endemic or exclusive of hypersaline ecosystems in Argentina. The reproductive characteristics displayed by the population from TUN lagoon suggest the existence of an occasional hybridization between A. franciscana and A. persimilis ( Papeschi et al., 2000 ). Artemia cysts from CHI and TUN show a fatty acid profile rich in eicosapentaenoic acid differing markedly from the fatty acid profiles found in A. persimilis cysts. Main conclusions: Artemia franciscana is present in Argentina at 36° S and north of this latitude. Artemia persimilis is confined to the south of latitude 37°10′ S. There are different pieces of evidence that point to a certain level of hybridization of the two species taking place in the land belt between these parallels.  相似文献

In this study, we developed an oviposition model of Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) with Tetranychus urticae Koch as prey. To obtain data for the model, we investigated the longevity, fecundity and survivorship of adult female N. californicus at six constant temperatures (16, 20, 24, 28, 32 and 36°C), 60–70% RH and a photoperiod of 16 : 8 (L : D) h. Longevity (average ± SE) decreased as temperature increased and was longest at 16°C (46.7 ± 5.25 days) and shortest at 36°C (12.8 ± 0.75 days). Adult developmental rate (1/average longevity) was described by the Lactin 1 model (r2 = 0.95). The oviposition period (average±SE) was also longest at 16°C (29.8 ± 2.93 days) and shortest at 36°C (6.7 ± 0.54 days). Fecundity (average±SE) was greatest at 24°C (43.8 ± 3.23 eggs) and lowest at 36°C (15.9 ± 1.50 eggs). The oviposition model comprised temperature‐dependent fecundity, age‐specific cumulative oviposition rate and age‐specific survival rate functions. The temperature‐dependent fecundity was best described by an exponential equation (r2 = 0.81). The age‐specific cumulative oviposition rate was best described by the three‐parameter Weibull function (r2 = 0.96). The age‐specific survival rate was best described by a reverse sigmoid function (r2 = 0.85).  相似文献

Isotopic values of two Caribbean sharpnose shark Rhizoprionodon porosus litters (Poey, 1861) with two and three embryos and one litter of 11 smalltail shark Carcharhinus porosus embryos showed enriched 15N and 13C compared to their mothers. In R. porosus, embryonic isotope values were 3.06 ± 0.07‰ and 0.69 ± 0.15‰ greater than their mothers' for δ15N and δ13C, respectively, whereas in C. porosus, δ15N and δ13C were 1.79 ± 0.09‰ and 1.31 ± 0.17‰ greater in embryos than their mothers.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate under a controlled environment, the effect of temperature on the survival and infectivity of Pseudotheraptus devastans Distant, a cassava anthracnose disease vector. The insect P. devastans was collected from young cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) field plots, at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria. A mixture of the different developmental stages of eggs, first to fifth instar nymphs, and adults, were incubated in controlled environment chambers, under various constant temperatures of: 15, 17, 22, 25, 27, 30, and 35°C. Relative humidity at different temperature conditions were recorded and maintained at 90%, 85%, 80%, 75%, 70%, 65%, and 60%, respectively. A significant increase in insect survival was observed between 22 and 27°C temperature conditions while a significant decrease in survival was observed at 15°C and above 30°C. Lesion number, lesion diameter and infectivity among the insect stages varied as a function of temperature and relative humidity. Infectivity was highest at 22–25°C maintained at 75–80% RH and lowest at 15°C and above 30°C maintained respectively, at 65% RH and 90% RH. There was considerable low vector infectivity due to low survival of the insects at extreme temperatures.  相似文献

Brassica insularis is a perennial plant growing on both coastal and inland cliffs. Three seed lots from Sardinia were analysed using an image analysis system to detect differences in seed morphology, both within and among populations. Germination requirements at constant (5–25 °C) and alternating temperatures (25/10 °C), both in light and in darkness, were evaluated for all populations. In addition, the effect of a dry after‐ripening period (90 days at 25 °C) was also investigated. Morpho‐colorimetric analysis clearly identified seeds from different populations and discriminated three chromatic categories for seeds belonging to the Isola dei Cavoli coastal population, but not for the inland Masùa and the coastal Planu Sartu. Inter‐population variability was also observed in germination behaviour. B. insularis seeds germinated, with percentages up to 60%, in a wide range of temperatures (5–25 °C), and neither light nor dry after‐ripening affected final germination percentages. Moisture content measurements were made for seeds of each colour, but there were no particular differences among colours. Inter‐populational variability in germination behaviour may be a survival strategy for species growing under unpredictable environmental conditions, such as under Mediterranean climate, while heteromorphy may be due to independent evolutionary divergence processes of the Isola dei Cavoli population.  相似文献

Reproduction, survival, and life table parameters of the predatory mite Cheyletus malaccensis Oudemans were evaluated at six constant temperatures: 17.5, 20, 25, 30, 32.5 and 35°C, feeding on Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank). Preoviposition period of fertilized and virgin females varied with temperature from ca. 9 days at 17.5°C to ca. 1.5 day at 32.5°C and then increased to ca. 3 days at 35°C. Virgin female oviposition period was significantly shorter than for fertilized females at the temperatures examined with the exception of 17.5°C. The mean total number of eggs per fertilized (169.7 ± 6.6) and virgin female (60.7 ± 4.3) was highest at the temperature of 30°C. The data indicated a significant positive and nearly doubling effect of fertilization on female fecundity at the temperatures examined with the exception of 17.5°C. Age-specific fecundity was described by a temperature dependent model from which the maximum daily fecundity rate was estimated for fertilized and virgin females at 10.3 (at 30°C) and 6.8 (at 32.5°C) eggs/female, respectively. Virgin female longevity was significantly shorter than for fertilized females at 20, 30 and 32.5°C, and decreased from ca. 57 days at 17.5°C to ca. 17 days at 35°C. The Weibull function that was used to describe the age specific survival of fertilized and virgin females produced excellent fits to the survival data. Estimates of intrinsic rate of increase, net reproductive rate, mean generation time, doubling time and finite rate of increase, were obtained. The rm value increased with temperature from 0.03 (day−1) at 17.5°C to 0.21 (day−1) at 32.5°C, after which it decreased to 0.15 (day−1) at 35°C. These data indicate that C. malaccensis can reproduce at temperatures between 17.5 and 35°C and can be used for biological control of astigmatid mites within the temperature range where the pest occurs.  相似文献

We have studied by Raman spectroscopy the thermal behavior of associated polyguanylic acid [poly(G)] and polyguanylic–polycytidylic acid [poly(G) · poly(C)] in self‐pressurized aqueous solutions contained in sealed capillary tubes. The associated polynucleotides were found to be very resistant to heat, but evidence of thermal degradation was observed after melting of the helical structures. The cooperative melting transition of the four‐stranded complex of poly(G) was located at 141°C in 0.5M KCl, 135°C in 0.5M NaCl, 129°C in 0.5M LiCl, 123°C in 0.1M tetramethylammonium perchlorate, and 105°C in 0.1M tetraethylammonium bromide solutions. The transition was observed at 130°C in poly(G) · poly(C) (in 0.5M NaCl).
