Summary The structural characteristics, water relations, and photosynthesis of Ferocactus acanthodes (Lemaire) Britton and Rose, a barrel cactus exhibiting Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM), were examined in its native habitat in the western Colorado desert. Water storage in its succulent stem permitted nighttime stomatal opening ot continue for about 40 days after the soil water potential became less than that of the stem, a period whe the plant would be unable to extract water from the soil. After 7 months of drought and consequent unreplenished water loss from a plant, diurnal stomatal activity was not observed and the stem osmotic pressure was 6.4 bars, more than double the value measured during wet periods with nighttime stomatal opening. F. acanthodes had a shallow root system (mean depth of 8 cm) which responded within 24 h to rainfall. When the nocturnal stem surface temperature was raised from 8.0° C to 35.0° C, the stomatal resistance increased 4-fold, indicating that cool nighttime temperatures are advantageous for gas exchange by F. acanthodes. Moreover, the optimal temperature for CO2 uptake in the dark was only 12.6° C. CO2 uptake at night became maximal for 3.0 mEinsteins cm-2 of photosynthetically active radiation incident during the preceding day, and the minimum number of incident quanta absorbed per CO2 fixed was 68. The transpiration ratio (mass of water transpired/mass of CO2 fixed) had the relatively low value of 70 for an entire year, consistent with values obtained for other CAM plants. The total amount of water annually diverted to the floral structures was about 6% of the stem wet weight. The annual growth increment estimated from the net CO2 assimilation corresponded to about 10% of the stem mass for barrel cacti 34 cm tall, in agreement with measured dimension changes, and indicated that such plants were about 26 years old. 相似文献

- 1. 1. Desert bees do not show significant differences in most thermal parameters; mean endothermic warm-up rates are similar to those of temperate species, with no special cooling mechanisms, and normal upper critical temperatures (unlike desert ants and beetles). Thermoregulatory abilities may however be improved.
- 2. 2. They show the whole range of possible water balance problems; small species are acutely water-stressed when foraging, but large bees suffer from excessive generation of metabolic water in flight.
- 3. 3. Activity patterns are therefore either matinal, crepuscular or bimodal; essentially desert bees avoid heat and adapt to cold desert dawns and dusks. Desert plants must be coevolved to offer appropriate rewards and match the physiological constraints on their pollinators.
- 4. 4. Endothermy in bees may have evolved primarily in arid zones, and served as a pre-adaptation for subsequent invasion of cool temperate biomes.

The Jornada del Muerto basin of the Chihuahuan Desert of southern New Mexico, USA, has undergone a marked transition of plant communities. Shrubs such as mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) have greatly increased or now dominate in areas that were previously dominated by perennial grasses. The replacement of grasses by shrubs requires an establishment phase where small shrubs must compete directly with similar-sized grass plants. This is followed by a phase in which large, established shrubs sequester nutrients and water within their biomass and alter soil resources directly under their canopy, creating “islands” of fertility. We hypothesized that these two phases were associated with shrubs having different physiological response capacities related to their age or size and the resource structure of the environment. As a corollary, we hypothesized that responses of small shrubs would be more tightly coupled to variation in soil moisture availability compared to large shrubs. To test these hypotheses, we studied gas exchange and water relations of small (establishing) and large (established) shrubs growing in the Jornada del Muerto as a function of varying soil moisture during the season. The small shrubs had greater net assimilation, stomatal conductance, transpiration, and xylem water potential than large shrubs following high summer rainfall in July, and highest seasonal soil moisture at 0.3 m. High rates of carbon assimilation and water use would be an advantage for small shrubs competing with grasses when shallow soil moisture was plentiful. Large shrubs had greater net assimilation and water-use efficiency, and lower xylem water potential than small shrubs following a dry period in September, when soil moisture at 0.3 m was lowest. Low xylem water potentials and high water-use efficiency would allow large shrubs to continue acquiring and conserving water as soil moisture is depleted. Although the study provides evidence of differences in physiological responses of different-sized shrubs, there was not support for the hypothesis that small shrubs are more closely coupled to variation in soil moisture availability than large shrubs. Small shrubs may actually be less coupled to soil moisture than large shrubs, and thus avoid conditions when continued transpiration could not be matched by equivalent water uptake. 相似文献

Seasonal patterns of growth, water relations, photosynthesis and leaf characteristics were compared between obligate seeders (Cistus monspeliensis and Cistus ladanifer) and resprouters (Arbutus unedo and Pistacia lentiscus) from the first to the second year after fire. We hypothesized that seedlings would be more water-limited than resprouts due to their shallower root systems. Regarding water use strategies, Cistus species are drought semi-deciduous and A. unedo and P. lentiscus are evergreen sclerophylls, therefore, comparisons were based on the relative deviation from mature conspecific plants. Seedlings and resprouts had higher shoot elongation and leaf production than mature plants, and over an extended period. Differences from mature plants were larger in resprouts, with two-fold transpiration, leaf conductance and photosynthesis in late spring/early summer. Seedlings of C. monspeliensis exhibited higher transpiration and leaf conductance than mature plants, while those of C. ladanifer only exhibited higher water potential. Growth increments and ameliorated water relations and photosynthesis after fire were attributed to an increase in water and nutrient availability. The small differences in water relations and photosynthesis between seedlings and mature conspecifics are in accordance with the prediction of seedlings experiencing higher water limitation than resprouts. We attribute these results to differences in root systems: resprouters benefited from an increase in root/shoot ratios and the presence of deep roots whereas Cistus seedlings relied on very shallow roots, which cannot provide assess to deep water during summer. Nevertheless, seedlings did not show evidence of experiencing a more severe water limitation than mature conspecifics, which we attributed to the presence of efficient mechanisms of avoiding and tolerating water stress. The results are discussed in relation to post-fire demography of seeders and resprouters in Mediterranean communities. 相似文献

Due to extreme variability in patterns of rainfall, plant seed banks are an important component of desert habitats. Here I report on effects of standing vegetation and three different microhabitats (channel, bank and terrace) on the soil seed bank of a desert wadi ecosystem in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. A total of 450 soil samples at 45 stands were collected to represent the different wadi microhabitats. The germinable seed bank was estimated by controlled counts of seedling emergence. The floristic composition, functional properties and diversity of the soil seed bank, as well as its similarity with the standing vegetation varied among wadi microhabitats. Such variation could be attributed to differences in disturbance intensity among microhabitats (terrace < bank < channel) and variation of soil factors along the microtopographic gradient. Channel showed the highest species richness and size of soil seed bank, followed by bank and then terrace. Moreover the Shannon index of diversity of the seed bank and its similarity with standing vegetation were significantly greater in both channel and bank microhabitats than in terrace. At the level of plant functional groups, number of seeds of annuals was higher in both channel and bank than in terrace. Shrubs were more abundant in seed banks of channel compared to terrace. The size and species richness of seed bank were increased with the total plant cover, annual/perennial ratio and species richness of the standing vegetation. 相似文献

The potentially mineralisable nitrogen extracted from 10 soils by two methods involving boiling with dilute KCl were compared with the actual uptake of soil N by spring barley in the field, as determined with the use of 15N-labelled fertiliser. Generally good correlations were found for those soils which had previously been cropped with cereals (defined in Great Britain as either N-Index zero, or low nitrogen status soils, for fertiliser recommendations), with the results obtained by the more severe of the two methods being somewhat better than by the other method. When organic matter content was also taken into account, correlations were improved. Mineral nitrogen in the soil at sowing was highly correlated with potentially mineralisable nitrogen, and with uptake, but this relationship did not hold for soil samples taken in January, well before the likely sowing date. This suggested that early measurement of soil mineral nitrogen (when decisions on cropping are normally made) was not a practicable method for determinining spring fertiliser applications, and that the measure of potentially mineralisable nitrogen appeared more promising in this regard. 相似文献

Effects of high temperature on photosynthesis, and its interaction with water relations in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), faba bean (Vicia faba), and five cultivars of field pea (Pisum sativum) were investigated. Responses of all species were compared at 20/15, 30/15, or 30/25 °C day/night, and cowpea and pea were compared at 20/15 and 30/25 °C under well-watered and limited-water conditions. Response of pea to 20/15 and 30/25 °C during flowering was ascertained, and sensitivity of the photosystem of pea and faba bean to 40 °C was determined.High temperature decreased chlorophyll variable fluorescence (Fv), a measure of injury to photosynthesis, in all species except cowpea, which was highly tolerant. Leaf chlorophyll and most measures of growth were favored by high day temperature but not by high night temperature, and photosynthetic rates were enhanced by high temperatures that increased leaf chlorophyll and nitrogen (N) contents. High temperature diminished growth less than water deficiency and increased water use of all three species but only lowered the water potential in faba bean. Water deficiency generally decreased growth, water use, and water potential more at 30/25 °C than at 20/15 °C. Stress from high temperature during flowering of pea decreased all components of yield at maturity, particularly at nodes that flowered latest. Whole-chain photosynthetic activity in thylakoids of pea, faba bean, and wheat (Triticum aestivum) were equally sensitive to high temperature, suggesting that Photosystem Il was the most labile component. The results show that high temperature affects photosynthesis, growth, and water relations of grain legumes, and sensitivity to the stress differs among species and genotypes. 相似文献

Needle water potential at noon and diurnal variation in needle water potential was measured with a pressure chamber during the growth seasons (1974, 1975 and 1976) in a 20-year-old stand of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), subjected to daily irrigation and nutrient treatments at Jädraås, in central Sweden (60°50'N).
In unstressed conditions there was little difference in water potential amongst the treatments. However, during a dry spell in 1976 the diurnal curves of water potential in the control and combined irrigated and fertilized treatment diverged by up to 6 bar in the middle of the day. Irrigation alone resulted in higher midday water potentials (Ψn ) than in the controls only during this period. At other times in 1974, 1975 and early 1976, the values of Ψn in the irrigated treatment were similar to the controls. Fertilization alone resulted in higher Ψn than in the controls in both 1975 and 1976 during both wet and dry periods. However, the largest difference between treatment and control occurred in the combined, irrigated and fertilized treatment during the dry spell in 1976.
Several possible explanations for the effect of fertilization on leaf water potential are discussed, including changes in hydraulic conductivity and water storage. The most likely explanation is a reduced transpiration rate as a result of more effective stomatal control of water loss. 相似文献

Water storage and osmotic pressure influences on the water relations of a dicotyledonous desert succulent 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:2
Abstract Water storage and nocturnal increases in osmotic pressure affect the water relations of the desert succulent Ferocactus acanthodes, which was studied using an electrical circuit analog based on the anatomy and morphology of a representative individual. Transpiration rates and osmotic pressures over a 24-h period were used as input variables. The model predicted water potential, turgor pressure and water flow for various tissues. Plant capacitances, storage resistances and nocturnal increases in osmotic pressure were varied to determine their role in the water relations of this dicotyledonous succulent. Water coming from storage tissues contributed about one-third of the water transpired at night: the majority of this water came from the nonphotosynthetic, water storage parenchyma of the stem. Time lags of 4 h were predicted between maximum transpiration and maximum water uptake from the soil. Varying the capacitance of the plant caused proportional changes in osmotically driven water movement but changes in storage resistance had only minor effects. Turgor pressure in the chlorenchyma depended on osmotic pressure, but was fairly insensitive to doubling or halving of the capacitance or storage resistance of the plant. Water uptake from the soil was only slightly affected by osmotic pressure changes in the chlorenchyma. For this stem succulent, the movement of water from the chlorenchyma to the xylem and the internal redistribution of water among stem tissues were dominated by nocturnal changes in chlorenchyma osmotic pressure, not by transpiration. 相似文献

We used the doubly labeled water method to measure the field metabolic rates (FMRs, in kJ kg?1?day?1) and water flux rates (WIRs, in ml H2O?kg?1?day?1) of adult desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii) in three parts of the Mojave Desert in California over a 3.5-year period, in order to develop insights into the physiological responses of this threatened species to climate variation among sites and years. FMR, WIR, and the water economy index (WEI, in ml H2O?kJ?1, an indicator of drinking of free water) differed extensively among seasons, among study sites, between sexes, and among years. In high-rainfall years, males had higher FMRs than females. Average daily rates of energy and water use by desert tortoises were extraordinarily variable: 28-fold differences in FMR and 237-fold differences in WIR were measured. Some of this variation was due to seasonal conditions, with rates being low during cold winter months and higher in the warm seasons. However, much of the variation was due to responses to year-to-year variation in rainfall. Annual spring peaks in FMR and WIR were higher in wet years than in drought years. Site differences in seasonal patterns were apparently due to geographic differences in rainfall patterns (more summer rain at eastern Mojave sites). In spring 1992, during an El Niño (ENSO) event, the WEI was greater than the maximal value obtainable from consuming succulent vegetation, indicating copious drinking of rainwater at that time. The physiological and behavioral flexibility of desert tortoises, evident in individuals living at all three study sites, appears central to their ability to survive droughts and benefit from periods of resource abundance. The strong effects of the El Niño (ENSO) weather pattern on tortoise physiology, reproduction, and survival elucidated in this and other studies suggest that local manifestations of global climate events could have a long-term influence on the tortoise populations in the Mojave Desert. 相似文献

Summary In the Chihuahuan Desert of southern New Mexico, both water and nitrogen limit the primary productivity of Larrea tridentata, a xerophytic evergreen shrub. Net photosynthesis was positively correlated to leaf N, but only in plants that received supplemental water. Nutrient-use efficiency, defined as photosynthetic carbon gain per unit N invested in leaf tissue, declined with increasing leaf N. However, water-use efficiency, defined as the ratio of photosynthesis to transpiration, increased with increasing leaf N, and thus these two measures of resource-use efficiency were inversely correlated. Resorption efficiency was not significantly altered over the nutrient gradient, nor was it affected by irrigation treatments. Leaf longevity decreased significantly with fertilization although the absolute magnitude of this decrease was fairly small, in part due to a large background of insect-induced mortality. Age-specific gas exchange measurements support the hypothesis that leaf aging represents a redistribution of resources, rather than actual deterioration or declining resource-use efficiency. 相似文献

Abstract A greenhouse experiment was conducted to examine the salt-induced changes in some key physio-biochemical attributes in eggplant (cv. New Noble) plants. Eggplant plants were grown under varying levels (0, 50, 100, and 150 mM) of sodium chloride under greenhouse conditions supplied with natural light and other climatic conditions. Varying saline regimes in growth medium significantly reduced the shoot and root fresh and dry weights, shoot and root lengths, relative water content, chlorophyll a and b pigments, photosynthetic rate (A), water-use efficiency, stomatal conductance (g s ), leaf and root K+, total phenolics, total soluble proteins, activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), and leaf water and osmotic potentials in all eggplant plants. However, in contrast, saline regimes of the root growing medium did not affect transpiration rate (E), internal CO2 concentration (C i ), C i /C a ratio, photochemical quenching (qP), non-photochemical quenching, efficiency of photosystem-II (F v /F m ), leaf and root Ca2+ as well as ascorbic acid (AsA) contents in eggplant. A significant increase was observed in leaf turgor potential, free proline and glycinebetaine contents, leaf and root Na+ contents, malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) contents and activities of peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) in eggplant plants under varying saline regimes. Overall, salt-induced growth reduction in eggplant plants was found to be associated with high accumulation of Na+ in both roots and shoots, which adversely affected photosynthetic capacity, chlorophyll pigments, K+ and Ca2+ contents, H2O2 and AsA levels and activities of SOD, POD, and CAT. 相似文献

Potassium deficient (−K) and potassium sufficient (+K) plants were exposed to four days of water stress. Well watered −K and
+K plants had comparable rates of transpiration. But +K plants had a larger leaf area and depleted the soil moisture to a
greater extent on day 1 of stress. For days 2 and 3 their transpiration rate, leaf water potential and relative water content
fell below those of −K plants. Well watered −K plants had a significantly lower rate of photosynthesis than +K plants. Photosynthesis
of −K plants was more sensitive to reduction in plant water potential than that of +K plants. Reduction of photosythesis in
−K leaves was due to impairment of photosynthetic capacity and not to stomatal closure. Growth was significantly reduced in
−K plants. 相似文献

The stl1 and stl2 mutations confer low and high levels of NaCl tolerance to gametophytes of the fern Ceratopteris richardii, respectively. As an initial characterization of these mutations, the levels of various organic solutes, tissue ion content and water relations were examined in the wild-type and mutant strains in the absence and presence of 60 mol m-3 NaCl stress (a level which results in a 20, 15 and 0% reduction in gametophyte growth in the wild-type, stl1 mutant and stl2 mutant, respectively). All strains exhibited major changes in organic and inorganic solute levels and water relations in response to 60 mol m-3 NaCl stress. Differences in organic solute levels and water relations between the wild-type and mutant strains in the absence and in response to 60 mol m-3 NaCl stress were minimal. Analysis of tissue ion content showed that stl1 was associated with a slight reduction in Na+ accumulation during 60 mol m-3 NaCl stress. stl2 was associated with (1) higher constitutive levels of K+ and (2) continued selective accumulation of K+ and reduced accumulation of Na+ during 60 mol m-3 NaCl stress. A K+/Na+ ratio close to 1 was observed in the wild-type during 60 mol m-3 NaCl stress, while higher ratios were detected in stl1 and stl2 (1·7 and 4·0, respectively). The findings of this study suggest that the tolerance imparted by stl1 and stl2 is associated with altered ion accumulation during NaCl stress, rather than an enhanced ability to accumulate organic solutes to be used for osmotic adjustment of the cytoplasm. 相似文献

Summary Water and nitrogen regimes of Larrea tridentata shrubs growing in the field were manipulated during an annual cycle. Patterns of leaf water status, leaf water relations characteristics, and stomatal behavior were followed concurrently. Large variations in leaf water status in both irrigated and nonirrigated individuals were observed. Predawn and midday leaf water potentials of nonirrigated shrubs were lowest except when measurements had been preceded by significant rainfall. Despite the large seasonal variation in leaf water status, reasonably constant, high levels of turgor were maintained. Pressure-volume curve analysis suggested that changes in the bulk leaf osmotic potential at full turgor were small and that nearly all of the turgor adjustment was due to tissue elastic adjustment. The increase in tissue elasticity with increasing water deficit manifested itself as a decrease in the relative water content at zero turgor and as a decrease in the tissue bulk elastic modulus. Because of large hydration-induced displacement in the osmotic potential and relative water content at zero turgor, it was necessary to use shoots in their natural state of hydration for pressure-volume curve determinations. Large diurnal and seasonal differences in maximum stomatal conductance were observed, but could not easily be attributed to variations in leaf water potential or leaf water relations characteristics such as the turgor loss point. The single factor which seemed to account for most of the diurnal and seasonal differences in maximum stomatal conductance between individual shrubs was an index of soil/root/ shoot hydraulic resistance. Daily maximum stomatal conductance was found to decrease with increasing soil/root/ shoot hydraulic resistance. This pattern was most consistent if the hydraulic resistance calculation was based on an estimate of total canopy transpiration rather than the more commonly used transpiration per unit leaf area. The reasons for this are discussed. It is suggested that while stomatal aperture necessarily represents a major physical resistance controlling transpiration, plant hydraulic resistance may represent the functional resistance through its effects on stomatal aperture. 相似文献

Coffea canephora plants (clone INCAPER-99) were submitted to low N (LN) or high N (HN) applications and two watering regimes (daily irrigation and irrigation every 5 days for a month). Although water potential was not altered significantly by N, HN plants showed higher relative water content than did LN plants under water deficit. Only HN plants exhibited some ability for osmotic adjustment. Plants from both N treatments increased their cell wall rigidity under drought, with a more pronounced augmentation in HN plants. In well-watered plants, carbon assimilation rate increased with increasing N while stomatal conductance did not respond to N supply. Under drought conditions, carbon assimilation decreased by 68-80% compared to well-watered plants, whereas stomatal conductance and transpiration rate declined by 35% irrespective of the N applications. Stable carbon isotope analysis, combined with leaf gas exchange measurements, indicated that regardless of the watering treatments, N increased the long-term water use efficiency through changes in carbon assimilation with little or no effect on stomatal behaviour. 相似文献

Summary
Prosopis tamarugo, a tree native to the Atacama desert of Chile apparently has unique water relations. It is proposed that in its native habitat, where there is essentially no precipitation, establishment occurs during the rare flooding periods, with water coming as runoff from the Andes. These plants subsequently exist as phreatophytes tapping the relatively shallow ground water. Although phreatophytic, the plants appears to come under increasing drought stress as the growing season progresses. Because of the very low water potentials of the salty surface soils, water evidently moves from the plant into the soil under certain conditions. This water may be reabsorbed subsequently and used by the plant as the water table capillary fringe is depleted toward the end of the leafy period. 相似文献

Drought stress effects on three cultivars of Eragrostis curvula: photosynthesis and water relations 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Water stress effects were studied on three cultivars ofEragrostis curvula. Leaf water potential, RWC, total plantleaf area, green dry weight mass percentage and CO2 gas-exchangeweremeasured during the onset of stress and after recovery. After 3 days of waterstress, RWC of cv Tanganyika plants was around 30–40% of controls, while RWC of cvs Ermelo and Consol was around 50–60% of controls. However midday and predawn water potentials were lower in cvs Tanganyka andErmelo than in cv Consol. After re-watering, RWC and water potentials recoveredonly in Consol plants. A strong decrease of leaf area was recorded in cvsErmeloand Consol during water stress (about 91–94% less than the leafarea of controls). Photosynthesis decreased as a function of the degree ofwaterstress severity in all cultivars. Also, light saturated photosynthesis,CO2 quantum yield and light at which saturated photosynthesisoccurred, were strongly reduced by water stress. Recovery of photosynthesis wasfound in cv Consol after five days re-watering. Cv Consol showed a betterconservation of water and higher resistance to water stress than the other twocvs. 相似文献
