The Computational Modeling in Biology Network (COMBINE) is an initiative to coordinate the development of community standards and formats in computational systems biology and related fields. This report summarizes the topics and activities of the fourth edition of the annual COMBINE meeting, held in Paris during September 16-20 2013, and attended by a total of 96 people. This edition pioneered a first day devoted to modeling approaches in biology, which attracted a broad audience of scientists thanks to a panel of renowned speakers. During subsequent days, discussions were held on many subjects including the introduction of new features in the various COMBINE standards, new software tools that use the standards, and outreach efforts. Significant emphasis went into work on extensions of the SBML format, and also into community-building. This year’s edition once again demonstrated that the COMBINE community is thriving, and still manages to help coordinate activities between different standards in computational systems biology.  相似文献

The annual meeting of the French Ion Channels Society, held on the Mediterranean coast of France, is aimed at gathering the international scientific community working on various aspects of ion channels. In this report of the 19th edition of the meeting, held in September 2008, we summarize selected symposia on aspects of the ion channel field from fundamental to clinical research. The meeting is an opportunity for leading investigators as well as young researchers to present and discuss their recent advances and future challenges in the ion channel field.  相似文献

Cairns, Queensland, Australia provided the venue for the 5th annual meeting of the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR), June 17-20, 2007. Consonant with the young society's mission to serve the international stem cell community, this meeting was the first held outside North America. The meeting drew attendees from 44 countries, with excellent representation from the Asia/Pacific region. The more than 120 presentations and 1000 posters covered virtually all aspects of the stem cell field and provided a snapshot of current areas of investigation. Here we review some of the newest findings in an effort to convey the energy and excitement of the meeting and the tempo of stem cell science.  相似文献

The Computational Modeling in Biology Network (COMBINE), is an initiative to coordinate the development of the various community standards and formats in computational systems biology and related fields. This report summarizes the activities pursued at the first annual COMBINE meeting held in Edinburgh on October 6-9 2010 and the first HARMONY hackathon, held in New York on April 18-22 2011. The first of those meetings hosted 81 attendees. Discussions covered both official COMBINE standards-(BioPAX, SBGN and SBML), as well as emerging efforts and interoperability between different formats. The second meeting, oriented towards software developers, welcomed 59 participants and witnessed many technical discussions, development of improved standards support in community software systems and conversion between the standards. Both meetings were resounding successes and showed that the field is now mature enough to develop representation formats and related standards in a coordinated manner.  相似文献

As usual, large numbers of Drosophila scientists working in fields as different as immunology and evolution descended on the venue. The meeting showed that the fly community is still vibrant and diverse even with the funding crunch at the NIH and the renewed rumors that Drosophila may have outlived its usefulness. This short review will focus on one session of platform presentations detailing the recent advances in the field of pattern formation. This session offered a variety of topics reviewing the formation of pattern in various tissues through diverse mechanisms. I will focus on early embryonic patterning through pair-rule genes, specificity of FGF signaling, and tissue regeneration.  相似文献

Over 200 scientists with a common interest in proteomic techniques and their application to fundamental biological and biomedical problems participated in the 7th East Midlands Proteomics Workshop. This annual one day meeting was held in Nottingham in November 2008 and is a joint venture of colleagues from three local Universities: The University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University, and Loughborough University.  相似文献

Five years after the first meeting held on Centrosomes and Spindle Pole Bodies, a second meeting was organized by Tano Gonzalez, Eric Karsenti, Kip Sluder, and Mark Winey in Heidelberg, Germany. Sponsored by the gracious European community (EMBO/EMBL), the meeting was both spectacular and exhausting. The wealth of information delivered, the plethora of model systems and unique approaches described, and the free exchange of information by a cooperative and excited community of scientists overwhelmed all participants. Even the best prepared scholars could not have anticipated the avalanche of data and insights that poured from the presentations from beginning to end. Daily posters by young and senior scientists added dimension to round out the well-planned series of presentations. The meeting began with opening remarks by Eric Karsenti and Michel Bornens who reminded participants of the historical questions of the field. Where does the centrosome come from? What are the mechanisms that control centrosome assembly and duplication? How is duplication coordinated with the cell cycle? Why do some cells have centrosomes, while others do not? What are the components of the centrosome? Does the centrosome play an important role in disease?  相似文献

The French Ion Channel society has existed since 1989 and its main goal is to annually organize a scientific meeting. This meeting, which gathers young and senior French scientists, provides a great opportunity for the exchange and interaction among the ion channel research community. Additionally, for many years, the French ion channel meeting has attracted a significant number of scientists from different European countries, elevating the discussion of new insights and advances, as well as aiding in the establishment of collaborations. In this report, we summarize the five symposia selected for their novelty and importance in human channelopathies, neuroplasticity, ion channel regulations, intracellular ion channels and plant physiology.  相似文献

The Alpine Forest Genomics Network was formed in 2011 and held its first annual meeting on June 24–26, 2012, in the Natural Park Adamello Brenta in Trentino Region, Italy. The meeting was attended by 30 researchers from the alpine region of Europe and had two primary goals: (1) for researchers to introduce each other to current and planned research activities in forest landscape genomics and (2) to develop a strategic vision for the network. A steering committee was elected and will develop a white paper over the next year. The next annual meeting will be held in Austria in June 2013.  相似文献

The ability to internalize macromolecules by endocytosis is a property of all eukaryotic cells. Frontline research on endocytosis has been presented in a successful series of biannual meetings in Europe. This year's meeting on "Membrane Dynamics in Endocytosis" was held September 13-18 in Acquafredda di Maratea, on the coast of southern Italy. Four key questions were addressed: What are the molecular mechanisms of endocytic membrane trafficking? How does endocytosis modulate receptor signaling and vice versa? In London, Ontario, the 8th Annual Joint meeting of the Great Lakes GPCR Retreat and the Club des Récepteurs à Sept Domaines Transmembranaires (now known simply as the GPCR Retreat) was held September 27–29, 2007. This meeting gathers together a core group of investigators from Michigan, Ontario, and Québec and has steadily increased its attendance in both the eastern (Europe) and western (USA, Canada) directions. The highlight this year was a sneak preview of the β2AR crystal structure provided by Brian Kobilka, but as can be seen below, many other cutting edge talks were heard as well.  相似文献

The 3rd annual 'Cancer Proteomics Conference', organized by Select Biosciences (Sudbury, UK), was held in Berlin, Germany, 8-9 June 2010. With the aim of strengthening the links between scientists from Europe, as well as international investigators worldwide, more than 200 delegates attended, representing various countries. The Conference covered many topics in proteomics, including the use of proteomics for cancer therapeutic development, diagnostic applications, biomarker discovery, post-translational modifications and clinical proteomics, as well as new proteomic technologies, which may facilitate future progress. One distinct feature of this meeting was that the Conference was co-located with the 'Advances in Antibody and Peptide Therapeutics' meeting. Delegates had access to both meetings, allowing for enhanced interaction among investigators from the closely linked fields of research.  相似文献

In a history that goes back to 1999, the Transgenic Technology meetings started out in Sweden and over the years began to attract a growing community of technicians and researchers mainly from Europe. As the meetings started to attract an expanding worldwide audience, the community decided to found the International Society for Transgenic Technologies at the Barcelona meeting in 2005. The 2007 convention was held at Brisbane, Australia, and in 2008, the 8th Transgenic Technology meeting was held for the second time on behalf of ISTT and for the second time outside of Europe in Toronto, Canada. Due to its excellent program with over 400 participants the meeting was able to attract the highest number of delegates of all past TT meetings. With extended times for plenary discussions about technical and organizational aspects, as well as top level scientific presentations, both technicians and scientists enjoyed this as an extremely fruitful meeting from which they could take home solutions for daily routines as well as new insights and ideas for coming projects.  相似文献

Endocytosis was studied in the seminal vesicle secretory cells of castrated and control hamsters in order to investigate the effect of testosterone withdrawal in the endocytic activity of these cells. Horseradish peroxidase was injected into the glands lumen after removal of their contents, and tracer distribution was qualitatively studied, and the number of labeled endocytic vesicles quantitatively analyzed, following 5, 20, 40 and 60 min incubation. The following compartments are labeled both in castrate and control cells: 1), endocytic vesicles; 2), vacuoles with or without secretory material; 3), multivesicular bodies; 4), Golgi cisternae; 5), intercellular spaces; 6), sub-epithelial space. The pattern of labeling is lighter in castrate than in control cells and the labeling of Golgi cisternae, which correlates with a significant peak in the number of endocytic vesicles, is observed later in castrated animals than in controls: 40 min vs 20 min. Exocytosis, as evaluated through the fraction of secretory protein released in vitro, decreases following castration. Endocytosis performed in castrated, pilocarpine treated animals shows that the Golgi labeling, coinciding with numerous labeled endocytic vesicles, is advanced from 40 to 20 min after stimulation of exocytosis. The results show that, in the seminal vesicle secretory cells a) the endocytic pathway does not depend on testosterone; b) testosterone withdrawal decreases endocytosis and delays the kinetics of labeling and; c) endocytosis couples to exocytosis, probably so regulating the apical cell membrane area.  相似文献
