Foraminifera were recovered from 18 samples collected in the Pitcairn Islands, 12 from Henderson Island (including the best and most comprehensive collections) and three each from Oeno Atoll and Pitcairn Island itself. Although both algae and sediment samples were collected, the living Foraminifera came, almost exclusively, from phytal (attached or clinging) habitats. Foraminifera in the sediment samples are mainly thanatocoenoses. The fauna is an exclusively calcareous, relatively low diversity assemblage, dominated by large soritids [Marginopora, Amphisorus, Sorites) and Amphistegina , all of which are ubiquitous throughout the tropical Pacific. These larger Foraminifera are usually accompanied by small miliolids in particular, as well as by small attached Foraminifera (discorbids and the like). Typical reefal Foraminifera are generally under-represented. So far, no endemic species have been found. Of more significance, perhaps, is the apparent absence of Calcarina , small rotaliids, elphidiids and agglutinating species, so common in the western Pacific islands. One sample of fossil Foraminifera was analysed, from a shelly sand (c. 30 m above present sea-level) on Henderson Island. Though, for the most part, like the Recent assemblages, this was characterized by Archaias , a soritid which was not found in any of the modern collections made by the 1991– 92 Expedition. The marls of Gelinden (Heersian stratotype or lowest part of the Landenian) contain rich assemblages of microplankton (98 species), including 73 species of dinoflagellates and 12 species of acritarchs. Some, probably new, are described in open nomenclature.Comparison between Gelinden assemblages and others from the Lower Tertiary and Upper Creataceous confirms the fully Tertiary aspect of the microplanktonic assemblages.Our results added to data obtained from macroflora and Foraminifera more accurately define the conditions of sedimentation into the “bay of Gelinden”: open sea, relatively deep water, not far from shore.  相似文献

Marine benthic Foraminifera are abundant and thus represent a potential food source for fish. Previous studies of Foraminifera in fish diets have examined only small samples, with significant input reported only for a single surface-feeding species of fish. The present study is the first based on a significant sample (247 fish belonging to 83 species, 291 species of Foraminifera identified from more than 20,000 specimens examined). It provides new information on the contribution of Foraminifera to fish diets, and on the impact of fish predation on Foraminifera. The planktonic Tretomphalus phases, selectively ingested by Pomacentrus amboinensis, were the only significant nutritional input from Foraminifera. Herbivorous fish accidentally ingested living epiphytic Foraminifera, which were still living after digestion, and were defecated, with a significant effect on their dispersion. Carnivorous fish ingested a small number of tests, which were generally altered by the acidic phase of digestion and had no impact on foraminiferal assemblages. Sediment feeders ingested large quantities of empty tests that were released elsewhere, suggesting a possible bias in paleontological interpretations by mixing the thanatocoenoses. Observations on gut contents showed that the fish sometimes fed on a wide range of food, changing with food availability and individual preferences of fish.  相似文献

Accurate and precise estimation of divergence times during the Neo-Proterozoic is necessary to understand the speciation dynamic of early Eukaryotes. However such deep divergences are difficult to date, as the molecular clock is seriously violated. Recent improvements in Bayesian molecular dating techniques allow the relaxation of the molecular clock hypothesis as well as incorporation of multiple and flexible fossil calibrations. Divergence times can then be estimated even when the evolutionary rate varies among lineages and even when the fossil calibrations involve substantial uncertainties. In this paper, we used a Bayesian method to estimate divergence times in Foraminifera, a group of unicellular eukaryotes, known for their excellent fossil record but also for the high evolutionary rates of their genomes. Based on multigene data we reconstructed the phylogeny of Foraminifera and dated their origin and the major radiation events. Our estimates suggest that Foraminifera emerged during the Cryogenian (650-920 Ma, Neo-Proterozoic), with a mean time around 770 Ma, about 220 Myr before the first appearance of reliable foraminiferal fossils in sediments (545 Ma). Most dates are in agreement with the fossil record, but in general our results suggest earlier origins of foraminiferal orders. We found that the posterior time estimates were robust to specifications of the prior. Our results highlight inter-species variations of evolutionary rates in Foraminifera. Their effect was partially overcome by using the partitioned Bayesian analysis to accommodate rate heterogeneity among data partitions and using the relaxed molecular clock to account for changing evolutionary rates. However, more coding genes appear necessary to obtain more precise estimates of divergence times and to resolve the conflicts between fossil and molecular date estimates.  相似文献

The aim of this study was describe functional faunal assemblages occurring in streams with high influence of urbanization in USA and Brazil to answer the question whether similar biological traits of fish assemblages would be found between streams with high influence of urbanization in USA and Brazil. We compiled data on the structure and composition of freshwater fishes in 46 urban streams in the USA and 10 urban streams in Brazil. Data on functional traits was established in accordance with ordinal data on abundance. Cluster analysis was conducted to examine relationships among species composition across all sites sampled and to uncover patterns in functional traits of the fish assemblages by nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS). The cluster analysis separated the biogeographic regions in relation to the fish fauna composition. However, the ordination analysis (NMS) did not reveal differences between functional traits in Brazil and USA urban fish assemblages, suggesting functional similarity of very disparate zoogeographic assemblages.  相似文献

Analysis of a large database of the stratigraphic distribution of fusulinacean Foraminifera reveals an Early Permian event of significant decline of species diversity in South China. Data from Late Carboniferous to Early Permian sections without apparent unconformity in southwest China were evaluated to determine if the apparent pattern of species disappearance was caused by bias in fossil preservation associated with Early Permian sea-level changes. Statistical analysis suggests that the Early Permian event started in the Late Sakmarian with a significant drop of species diversity in the Robustoschwagerina ziyunensis Zone and continued through the Pamirina darvasica Zone of the Artinskian and into the Brevaxina dyhrenfurthi Zone of the Early Kungarian, resulted in a total loss of about 40% species diversity in the fusulinacean fauna. The Early Permian event is the most extensive bioevent in the history of fusulinacean Foraminifera at the species level although it is less significant at the generic level. Because a similar faunal change has been found among the fusulinacean assemblages in North America and in various regions of Tethys, this event may represent a major faunal turn-over in response to the Early Permian changes in sea level and could be of a global nature. Previous recognition of this event was hampered by Early Permian unconformities in North America and other regions of Tethys.  相似文献

Aim   To examine the issue of Beringian steppe-tundra from an entomological standpoint, using fossil beetle data collected from late Pleistocene sites.
Location   North-eastern Siberia (Western Beringia), the Bering Land Bridge (Central Beringia), and Alaska and the Yukon Territory (Eastern Beringia).
Methods   Analysis of habitat preferences of beetle species found in fossil assemblages, leading to classification of major habitat types characterized by the faunal assemblages.
Results   Fossil beetle assemblages indicative of steppe-tundra are found mainly in the interior regions of Eastern Beringia, whereas these assemblages dominate nearly all late Pleistocene fossil sites in Western Beringia. Eastern Beringian faunas contain a much larger proportion of mesic to hygrophilous species and very few arid-habitat species. In contrast to this, the habitat requirements of the Western Beringian faunas are more evenly spread across the moisture spectrum.
Main conclusions   The taxonomic patterns of the two sets of fossil assemblages are remarkably different. Eastern Beringian faunal assemblages contain substantial numbers of mesic tundra and riparian rove beetles (Staphylinidae); this element is almost entirely lacking in the Western Beringian fossil assemblages. Taphonomic bias tends to overemphasize moisture-loving species at the expense of dry, upland species in the fossil record. Both Western and Eastern Beringian landscapes undoubtedly contained mosaics of habitats ranging from dry uplands (steppe-tundra) through mesic tundra to bogs and riparian corridors.  相似文献

鄂尔多斯盆地东缘关家崖剖面奥陶系马家沟组五5亚段地层中保存大量无脊椎动物遗迹化石,可识别出居住迹、牧食迹、觅食迹三大类,共7个遗迹属、14个遗迹种,分别是Arenicolites isp.,Cylindricumisp.,Helminthopsis abeli,Helminthopsis isp.1,Helminthopsis isp.2,Lorenziniaisp.,Planolites isp.,Planolites beverleyensis,Planolites montanus,Teichichnus rectus,Thalassinoides isp.1,Thalassinoides isp.2,Thalassinoides isp.3,Thalassinoides isp.4。根据遗迹化石特征及其沉积环境,可划分3个遗迹组合:1、Helminthopsis-Planolites组合,该组合以觅食迹为主,部分为居住迹,出现在潮间带和潮下带;2、Thalassinoides-Teichichnus组合,该组合遗迹化石种类较单一,主要为觅食迹,分布于潮间带和潮上带;3、Thalassinoides-Helminthopsis组合,该组合出现在潮间带。基于遗迹化石组合的分布特点,提出山西兴县奥陶系马家沟组五5亚段的沉积环境模式。  相似文献

The Middle Jurassic palynoflora from the two wells of PUl and CN1 of Turpan-Shanshan area in Xinjiang consists of 97 species of fossil spores and pollen grains referred to 45 genera, of which 2 species are newly described. Three palynological assemblages including: 1) Cyathidites-Cycadopites-Quadraeculina (CCQ), 2) Cyathidites-Classopollis-Picites (CCP) and 3 ) Granu-latisporites-Classopollis-Podocarpidites (GCP) assemblages are established in the Xishanyao, Sanjianfang and Qiketai Formations, respectively. Comparisons have been made between these assemblages with those of the adjacent regions in Xinjiang and other domestic areas and at abroad. The geological age of the CCQ assemblage is suggested to be at early Middle Jurassic (corresponding to Aalenian to Bajocian age); while the CCP and GCP assemblages are considered to be at late Middle Jurassic (corresponding to early to late Bathonian age, respectively).  相似文献

The ostracod fauna collected from the Cherahil formation that crops out at the Jebel Serj section (central Tunisia) contains 24 species belonging to 12 genera. These ostracods are associated with 9 genera of benthic Foraminifera (including 4 Nummulites species) and 7 genera of planktonic Foraminifera. The biostratigraphic study of ostracod assemblages results to the recognition of 6 biozones which are correlated with Lutetian-Priabonian. The Shannon Weaver, Margalef and equitability indices point to internal platform netritic conditions, with minor fluctuations in depth and oxygenation. The palaeobiogeographic distribution of ostracod species found in the study area of Central of Tunisia establishes a good connexion with the basins developed in Northern Africa (Tunisia, Algeria, Libya and Mauritania) and the Middle East (Egypt and Jordan).  相似文献

The meiobenthos inhabiting an intertidal mud bar were disturbed by hand-turning the sediment of a 9-m2 area with a shovel and monitoring the subsequent recolonization process.The immediate impact of the disturbance on this community dominated by Nematoda (91%), Copepoda (4%) and Foraminifera (4%), was to remove more than 70% of the meiofauna. However, after only one tidal cycle, total numbers of nematodes, copepods, foraminiferans and other meiofauna taxa were at predisturbance and control (similar 9-m2 site on the same flat) density values. Nematode species assemblages rapidly adapted to the disturbance and changed little over time. Foraminifera showed insignificant fluidized flocculent upper layer of sediment was probably the major dispersal mechanism in this community, and foraminiferans seem to be the least able to use this mechanism.The meiobenthos of this habitat is described as a well-dispersed and dynamic community able to rapidly adjust to small-scale disturbances. However, the meiobenthos may not recover from all disturbances, because resilience was only determined for a limited physical disturbance.  相似文献

Three trace fossil associations have been identified from facies interpreted as low wave energy upper, middle and lower shoreface deposits, transitional shoreface/shelf deposits and open epicontinental shelf deposits. These were developed in pre-regressive, regressive and transgressive phases associated with eustatic sea level changes caused by the upper Ordovician glaciation. The three associations are the Skolithos-Diplocraterion association, the Diplichnites-Phycodes association and the Thalassinoides association. The Skolithos-Diplocraterion association inhabited upper, middle and lower shoreface environments, the Diplichnites-Phycodes association a lowermost shoreface environment and the Thalassinoides association inhabited offshore epicontinental shelf environmcnts. The Skolithos-Diplocraferion and Diplichnites-Phycodes associations bear strong affinities with previously described Skolithos ichnofacies assemblages (indicating shoreline environments) and the Cruziana ichnofacies forms (indicating shallow water environments down to wave base) respectively. The Thalassinoides assemblage, however, closely compares with assemblages described from Mesozoic epicontinental shelf sequences. Trace fossil diversity achieves a maximum in the lowermost shoreface environment and reduces in deeper water and shallower water environments. This accords with diversity patterns identified in analogous Jurassic epicontinental palaeonvironments. The stratigraphic distribution of some trace fossil association boundaries accords with those of contemporary body fossil associations. The fossil bat assemblage from the Lower Red Unit of Sima del Elefante (TELRU) in Atapuerca (Burgos, Spain) has been exhaustively analysed for the first time. Bat fossil assemblages are of particular relevance to palaeoenvironmental approaches to sites. Here we integrate our new data on the chiropteran fauna with the data provided previously by other authors on the basis of the small-vertebrate assemblages and the palynology of the site. Our results are consistent with the earlier results in that they indicate a generally warmer climate than at present in the area and stable environmental conditions throughout the major part of the TELRU sequence. However, fossil bat assemblages sometimes lead to problems when they are used in landscape reconstruction. These problems are discussed here and should be taken into account in future works.  相似文献

通过昆明海口马房村同一个采坑的化石连续采集和统计,对澄江化石库中两种埋藏相(以事件层泥岩和背景层泥岩所代表)内化石保存和组合特征进行定量研究,结果表明:(1)事件层内化石量并不随单一事件层厚度变化而变化。物种在剖面上不同层位的事件层内分布不均匀,表现为单层富集现象;而背景层内的化石含量与背景层的沉积厚度有关,背景层的沉积厚度越厚,化石数量就越多。(2)事件层与背景层内化石组合和结构存在很大差异。事件层内化石组合与背景层内化石组合相比具有更多的物种组成和更复杂的古群落结构;而背景层内化石组合面貌单调,在剖面上保持稳定。(3)事件层内化石生物体腐烂发生在埋藏之后,绝大多数化石生物是被活埋后保存下来的;而背景层内化石主要表现为外壳和弱矿化有机质生物表皮在海床表面长时间停滞而堆积形成,明显受到时间均衡作用(time-average)的影响。(4)事件层内化石在埋藏前无搬运作用,或发生近原栖息地的快速搬运,埋藏后无生物扰动。背景层内大量壳体相连的双瓣壳节肢动物化石和完整海绵体化石的存在则表明,背景层代表一个低氧、低能并具有有限生物扰动的沉积环境。  相似文献

Because the Foraminifera are very sensitive to various environmental parameters (e.g., water temperature, salinity, light, etc.), there are important proxies used for palaeoenvironmental and palaeogeographic reconstructions. The evolution of the structure, shape and size of the mineralized tests of Foraminifera can directly reflect the variation of these parameters through geological time. Furthermore, their biostratigraphic value has been widely demonstrated. In this context, the systematics, evolution and ecological behaviour of the first mineralized Palaeozoic Foraminifera are important to discuss in order to have a clearer picture of former shallow marine environments, and finally understand their distribution through space and time. The systematics of the fossil group of Foraminifera that first developed a mineralized test remains under discussion. These early foraminifers are considered as Textulariata (as generally admitted), recrystallized Fusulinata or an independent group, sometimes called Astrorhizata. In this paper, we argue to assign the early foraminifers to the Fusulinata, and to subdivide this class into six orders: Parathuramminida, Archaediscida and Earlandiida (forming together the subclass Afusulinana n. subcl.), and Tournayellida, Endothyrida and Fusulinida (subclass Fusulinana nom. translat.). These subdivisions are discussed and linked to the first occurrences of the later classes: Miliolata, Nodosariata and Textulariata. The environmental living conditions of the first fossilized foraminifers remain enigmatic during the Early Palaeozoic (Cambrian-Silurian). During the Late Silurian, the unilocular Parathuramminida started to colonize the inner parts of ramps and platforms. The first plurilocular microgranular foraminifers (Semitextulariidae, Nanicellidae, and Eonodosariidae) developed in back-reefal systems and in deeper-water environments (“griottes”-type nodular limestone) from the late Early Devonian to the early Late Devonian. The Moravamminida, another group of possible Protista, are typical markers of Devonian inner ramp systems. The Semitextulariidae, Nanicellidae, and Eonodosariidae did not survive the Frasnian/Famennian crisis. From the Tournaisian to the Serpukhovian (Mississippian subsystem or Early Carboniferous), numerous new genera and species of Archaediscida, Tournayellida and Endothyrida flourished but remained confined to inner ramp environments. In deeper water depositional systems (i.e. coral thrombolite microbialites and/or nodular limestones), a few opportunistic Foraminifera were living up to the disphotic zone. During the Pennsylvanian (Bashkirian to Gzhelian), the habitats extended to more confined, shallower areas of the inner ramp (with Staffelloidea). During the Late Carboniferous and Permian, the larger Fusulinida (Schwagerinoidea) reached the outer platform as they have been commonly reworked in calciturbidites. During the Late Permian, some taxa were even able to live in hypersaline environments such as sabkhas and hypersaline lagoons. Two major biotic crises occurred during the Permian (post-Middle and post-Late Permian crisis), but the number of survivors after the PTE (Permian/Triassic Extinction) is probably higher than previously admitted. From the Cambrian to the Serpukhovian, the Foraminifera were probably all infaunal or living at the sediment/seawater interface. The TROX and TROX-2 models are consequently applicable. Anoxia, often suggested as triggering environmental crises, was likely not systematically lethal for many infaunal foraminifers. The late Tournaisian-Changhsingian Tetrataxis genus was probably the first epiphyte foraminifer, because of its conical, limpet-like test. The Tetrataxidae (e.g., Tetrataxis, Pseudotaxis and Abadehella) constituted the unique trochospirally coiled plurilocular foraminiferal family of the Palaeozoic. The Bradyinoidea, Ozawainelloidea, Staffelloidea, and the Pseudoschwagerinidae (Schwagerinoidea) are other examples of Pennsylvanian-Permian epiphytes but cannot be considered as planktonic taxa. All the other Schwagerinoidea are related to high-energy environments and coarse-grained substrates. Their history, as well as that of the Neoschwagerinoidea, was likely subject to the vicissitudes of their endosymbiotic algae.  相似文献
