The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of using different floor types to accommodate growing and finishing beef cattle on their performance, cleanliness, carcass characteristics and meat quality. In total, 80 dairy origin young bulls (mean initial live weight 224 kg (SD=28.4 kg)) were divided into 20 blocks with four animals each according to live weight. The total duration of the experimental period was 204 days. The first 101 days was defined as the growing period, with the remainder of the study defined as the finishing period. Cattle were randomly assigned within blocks to one of four floor type treatments, which included fully slatted flooring throughout the entire experimental period (CS); fully slatted flooring covered with rubber strips throughout the entire experimental period (RS); fully slatted flooring during the growing period and moved to a solid floor covered with straw bedding during the finishing period (CS-S) and fully slatted flooring during the growing period and moved to fully slatted flooring covered with rubber strips during the finishing period (CS-RS). Bulls were offered ad libitum grass silage supplemented with concentrates during the growing period. During the finishing period, bulls were offered concentrates supplemented with chopped barley straw. There was no significant effect of floor type on total dry matter intake (DMI), feed conversion ratio, daily live weight gain or back fat depth during the growing and finishing periods. Compared with bulls accommodated on CS, RS and CS-RS, bulls accommodated on CS-S had a significantly lower straw DMI (P<0.01). Although bulls accommodated on CS and CS-S were significantly dirtier compared with those accommodated on RS and CS-RS on days 50 (P<0.05) and 151 (P<0.01), there was no effect of floor type on the cleanliness of bulls at the end of the growing and finishing periods. There was also no significant effect of floor type on carcass characteristics or meat quality. However, bulls accommodated on CS-S had a tendency for less channel, cod and kidney fat (P=0.084) compared with those accommodated on CS, RS and CS-RS. Overall, floor type had no effect on the performance, cleanliness, carcass characteristics or meat quality of growing or finishing beef cattle.  相似文献

Accommodating cattle indoors during the winter is widely practiced throughout Europe. There is currently no legislation surrounding the space allowance and floor type that should be provided to cattle during this time, however, concerns have been raised regarding the type of housing systems currently in use. The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of space allowance and floor type on performance and welfare of finishing beef heifers. Continental crossbred heifers (n=240: mean initial live; weight, 504 (SD 35.8) kg) were blocked by breed, weight and age and randomly assigned to one of four treatments; (i) 3.0 m2, (ii) 4.5 m2 and (iii) 6.0 m2 space allowance per animal on a fully slatted concrete floor and (iv) 6.0 m2 space allowance per animal on a straw-bedded floor, for 105 days. Heifers were offered a total mixed ration ad libitum. Dry matter intake was recorded on a pen basis and refusals were weighed back twice weekly. Heifers were weighed, dirt scored and blood sampled every 3 weeks. Whole blood was analysed for complete cell counts and serum samples were assayed for metabolite concentrations. Behaviour was recorded continuously using IR cameras from days 70 to 87. Heifers’ hooves were inspected for lesions at the start of the study and again after slaughter. Post-slaughter, carcass weight, conformation and fat scores and hide weight were recorded. Heifers housed at 4.5 m2 had a greater average daily live weight gain (ADG) than those on both of the other concrete slat treatments; however, space allowance had no effect on carcass weight. Heifers accommodated on straw had a greater ADG (0.15 kg) (P<0.05), hide weight (P<0.01) better feed conversion ratio (P<0.05) and had greater dirt scores (P<0.05) at slaughter than heifers accommodated on concrete slats at 6.0 m2. The number of heifers lying at any one time was greater (P<0.001) on straw than on concrete slats. Space allowance and floor type had no effect on the number of hoof lesions gained or on any of the haematological or metabolic variables measured. It was concluded that increasing space allowance above 3.0 m2/animal on concrete slats was of no benefit to animal performance but it did improve animal cleanliness. Housing heifers on straw instead of concrete slats improved ADG and increased lying time; however carcass weight was not affected.  相似文献

Chicken tibiae were chosen as a model for human second metatarsals. Local surface bone deformation in a 4-point bending configuration was measured in vitro by both strain gauge instrumented staples and strain gauges bonded to the bone's cortical surface. A series of staple bridge dimensions (0.5, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 mm) was compared to test for staple influence on bone characteristics and greatest measurement validity and reliability. Thicker staple inhibition of bone deformation was the greatest but differences to thinner staples were not statistically significant (p>0.05). All staples except 0.5 mm had maximum deviations from linearity less than 1%. The 1.0 mm staple had an R2 value of 0.992±0.006 plotted against the 4-point bending input force and 0.994±0.002 plotted against the surface strain gauge signal. The mean intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) calculated with four input forces (30, 60, 90 and 120 N) and for loading and unloading conditions for the 0.5, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 mm staples were 0.75, 0.83, 0.87 and 0.92, respectively. Finally, the differences in slope of the staple strain gauge signal plotted against surface strain gauge signal between input force loading and unloading conditions (0.32), and between input compression and tension conditions (0.79) was least for the 1.0 mm staple which also resulted in the lowest standard deviations. These results suggested the appropriateness of the 1.0 mm staple for in vivo application.  相似文献

Carcass traits and meat quality of rabbits reared in conventional cages (0.385 m2), small pens (0.662 m2) or large pens (4.052 m2) at a similar stock density of 15 rabbits/m2 were compared (n = 30 per group). Pens contained an elevated platform. Slaughter weight (SW; P < 0.01) and cold carcass weight (P < 0.05) decreased in the order of Cage < Small pen < Large pen groups. SW and cold carcass weight were 7% lower in rabbits housed in large pens than in cages. Dressing out and meat-to-bone ratio were not influenced by the housing system. Percentage of fat deposits was highest in caged rabbits (+0.15 point for scapular fat and +0.26 point for perirenal fat compared to rabbits reared in large pens P < 0.05). Rabbits housed in large pens had a bigger proportion of hind part (+1 point), and meat colour was shifted towards greater a* values (P < 0.01) compared to caged rabbits. Water holding capacity and shear test parameters in longissimus lumborum muscle, lipid content and shear test parameters of abductor cruralis cranialis, biceps femoris and semitendinosus muscles were not affected by the housing system. Tibia and femur bone moment of inertia increased in the order of Cage < Small pen < Large pen groups (P < 0.05), whereas elastic modulus, which is a measure of intrinsic stiffness, was highest in caged rabbits. This study showed that large pen housing altered carcass traits independently and increased meat redness and fracture resistance of tibia and femur.  相似文献

A total of 190 rabbit females were used to evaluate five feeding programmes from 9 weeks of age to the first parturition: CAL, fed ad libitum with a control diet (C: 11.0 MJ digestible energy (DE) and 114 g digestible protein (DP)/kg dry matter (DM)) until first parturition; CR, fed ad libitum with C diet until 12 weeks of age and then C diet restricted (140 g/day) until first parturition; F, fed ad libitum with a low-energy, high-fibre diet (F: 8.7 MJ DE and 88 g DP/kg DM) until first parturition; FC, fed with F diet ad libitum until 16 weeks of age, and C diet ad libitum until first parturition; FCF, fed with F diet ad libitum until 16 weeks of age, then C diet ad libitum until 20 weeks and then F diet ad libitum until first parturition. The rabbits were artificially inseminated at 18 weeks of age. CAL group had a higher mortality rate compared with the other groups between 9 and 12 weeks of age (34% v. 3%; P < 0.05) and during the last 3 weeks of first pregnancy (14% v. 3%; P < 0.05). The CAL and FC females presented higher BW and perirenal fat thickness (PFT) than CR females at 11 days of pregnancy (+0.41 kg and +0.6 mm; P < 0.05), with F females showing medium values. The type of feeding procedure did not affect the fertility rate of young females at first artificial insemination. Differences in BW disappeared at parturition, when only CAL females presented a greater PFT than CR and FC females (+0.3 mm; P < 0.05). In comparison with FCF, CAL females had smaller and thinner live born litters (−2.5 kits and −139 g, respectively; P < 0.05), with CR, F and FC females showing medium values. The low number of kits born alive for CAL females was because of their lesser total number of kits born (−1.7 kits; P < 0.05) and the greater mortality of their litters at birth (+13.9%; P < 0.05) compared with FCF females. Non-esterified fatty acid was higher in the blood of females fed C diet (CAL and CR) than in others at partum day (on average +0.15 mmol/l; P < 0.05). In conclusion, the ad libitum use of diets for lactating rabbit does throughout the rearing period could lead young rabbit females to present a higher risk of early death and smaller litter size at first parturition. Feed restriction or earlier use of suitably fibrous diets led females to achieve the critical BW and fat mass at first mating to ensure reproduction.  相似文献

This study aimed first to evaluate the effect of recombinant human FSH (rhFSH) with and without recombinant human LH (rhLH) on fresh and frozen-thawed embryo development and also to analyze the immune response of rabbit does (Oryctolagus cuniculus) subjected to repeated rhFSH treatments. Nulliparous New Zealand White does were used. In Experiment 1, 120 does were superovulated with 25 IU rhFSH alone or in combination with 5% or 10% rhLH (1.25 IU or 2.50 IU rhLH). A total of 1116 embryos at the compacted morula stage were cultured at 38.5 °C, 5% CO2, and saturated humidity for 48 h. The embryo development to hatching blastocyst was significantly lower for the group with 10% rhLH versus that of the control group (65.6 vs. 79.5 for rhFSH + 10% rhLH vs. control, respectively). However, no significant difference was found in development to hatching blastocyst for the control, rhFSH alone, and rhFSH + 5% rhLH groups. The developmental potential of frozen-thawed embryos obtained from all groups was similar, with an 83.5% in vitro development rate until the expanded blastocyst stage. To detect anti-FSH antibodies, in Experiment 2, does were subject to four superovulation treatments. The hormone administration had a significant effect on immune response in the superovulation group after two treatments (0.14 ± 0.074 and 0.15 ± 0.076 vs. 0.46 ± 0.078 and 0.50 ± 0.078 optical density for the first, second, third, and forth cycles, respectively). Nevertheless, none of the treated does had an immune response in both the first and second treatments; on the contrary, a significant increase in the antibody levels was observed in these females at the moment of the third and fourth superovulation treatments. In conclusion, rhFSH superovulation treatments increase the reproductive potential of rabbit does.  相似文献

Researchers have debated whether the presence and frequency of wormian bones (sutural bones, supernumerary bones, and ossicles) are attributable to genetic factors, environmental factors, or both. This research examines the effects of many different kinds of cranial deformation on the incidence of wormian bones. A sample of 127 deformed and undeformed crania from New World archaeological sites was examined. An undeformed cranial sample (n=35) was compared to the following cranially deformed groups: 1) occipital, 2) lambdoid, 3) annular, 4) fronto-vertico-occipital, 5) parallelo-fronto-occipital, and 6) sagittal synostosis. Three levels of degree of cultural cranial deformation were qualitatively determined. Type and number of wormian bones along each major suture were recorded for each cranium. Group means were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis one-way ANOVA statistical tests to test the null hypothesis that cranial deformation does not have an effect on wormian bone incidence. Results indicate that all forms of cranial deformation affect the frequency of some types of wormian bones. In particular, all cranially deformed groups exhibited significantly greater frequencies of lambdoid ossicles. Apical, parieto-mastoid, and occipito-mastoid wormian bones also appeared with greater frequency in some groups of culturally deformed crania. Further, varying degrees of cultural deformation all had more lambdoid wormian bones than the undeformed group. These results suggest that wormian bone development in posteriorly placed sutures may be affected more by environmental forces than are their anteriorly placed counterparts.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of feed restriction during pregnancy on reproductive performance of rabbit does and growth performance and meat quality of their offspring. A total of 26 primiparous non lactating does were equally divided into two treatment groups: the control group (C, n=13) that was fed ad libitum throughout gestation and the feed restricted group (R, n=13) that was fed to 75% of maintenance energy requirements from the 7th to the 26th day of gestation. Rabbit offsprings were weaned at 35 days of age and grown until the 72 days of age when they were slaughtered for meat quality assessment. Meat quality traits measured were pH24, colour (L*, a*, b*), percentage of released water, cook loss, shear values and intramuscular fat. At kindling, R does produced smaller litter weights compared with those of does from group C, 447.8 and 591.4 g, respectively, and smaller individual kit birth weights, 56.2 and 71.5 g, respectively (P<0.05). Ratio of stillborn kits and mortality rate from parturition until weaning was higher (P<0.05) in the R group, 21.4% and 11.1%, respectively, in comparison with the C group, 8.1% and 3.5%, respectively. Litter size and gestation length were unaffected by maternal undernutrition. Kit birth weight treatment differences were eliminated at weaning because of compensatory growth (P>0.05). Performance and meat quality characteristics of fattening rabbits at 72 days of age were not influenced by gestational feed restriction of their mothers (P>0.05). Taking into consideration that, simultaneous gestation and lactation in rabbit does may be simulated by gestational feed restriction, results of the present study suggest that lactating does can support a simultaneous gestation without any adverse effect on the offsprings’ quantitative and qualitative performance at the expense of increased mortality rates at parturition and until weaning.  相似文献

骨髓间充质干细胞(Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells,BMSCs)已被广泛应用于治疗脊髓损伤,但目前对其治疗机制了解甚少。BMSCs被移植至脊髓钳夹损伤模型大鼠,以研究其保护作用。通过LFB(Luxol fast blue)染色、锇酸染色、TUNEL(Td T-mediated d UTP nick-end labeling)染色和透射电镜对白质有髓神经纤维进行观察。免疫印迹检测BMSCs移植对脑源性神经营养因子(Brain derived neurotrophic factor,BDNF)和caspase 3蛋白表达的影响。通过脊髓损伤后1、7、14 d三个时间点移植BMSCs并进行后肢运动评分(Basso,beattie and bresnahan;BBB评分)和CNPase(2′,3′-cyclic-nucleotide 3′-phosphodiesterase)、髓鞘碱性蛋白(Myelin basic protein,MBP)、caspase 3蛋白水平的检测。免疫荧光观察BMSCs移植到受损脊髓后分化情况及CNPase-caspase 3~+共表达情况。骨髓间充质干细胞移植7 d后,部分移植的BMSCs可表达神经元和少突胶质细胞标记物,大鼠后肢运动能力和髓鞘超微结构特征均明显改善。骨髓间充质干细胞移植后BDNF蛋白表达水平增加,caspase 3蛋白表达水平则降低。相对于脊髓损伤后1 d和14 d,7 d移植BMSCs后MBP和CNPase蛋白表达水平最高;caspase 3蛋白表达水平则最低。骨髓间充质干细胞移植后CNPase-caspase 3~+细胞散在分布于脊髓白质。结果表明,急性脊髓损伤后,BMSCs移植到受损脊髓有分化为神经元和少突胶质细胞的倾向,并促进BDNF的分泌介导抗少突胶质细胞凋亡而对神经脱髓鞘病变有保护作用,且最佳移植时间为脊髓损伤后7 d。  相似文献

The regional distribution of catalytic NOS activity was studied in the lumbosacral segments of the spinal cord of the rabbit during single (8-min), twice (8-, 8-min) and thrice repeated (8-, 8-, 9-min) sublethal ischemia followed each time by 1h of reperfusion. Single ischemia/reperfusion induced a significant increase of cNOS activity in almost all spinal cord regions, with the exception of non-significant increase in the dorsal horn. Sublethal ischemia repeated twice produced a significant decrease of enzyme activity in the intermediate zone and ventral horn and an increase in the white matter columns. Within thrice repeated ischemia, the activity of cNOS in the gray matter regions was similar to that found after a single ischemia/reperfusion. For all the animals subjected to single and twice repeated sublethal ischemic insults, there was no neurological impairment. Following thrice repeated ischemic insults, four out of five of the experimental animals recovered only partially and one was completely paraplegic. Our results do not indicate a cumulative effect of repeated sublethal ischemia on cNOS activity and, consequently, on NO production. The NO generated during thrice repeated ischemia/reperfusion appears to have a detrimental effect on the neurological outcome.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to compare production and welfare of rabbit does and their kits housed in various types of cages. Female rabbits were randomly allocated to four groups with the following cage types: CN: common wire-mesh flat-deck cage, without footrest; CF: cage similar to the CN but with plastic footrest; ECWP: enlarged cage with wire-mesh platform; and ECPP: extra enlarged cage with plastic-mesh platform. All does were inseminated on the same day, 11 days after kindlings. Reproductive performance was evaluated during the first five consecutive kindlings. Severity of sore hocks was scored at each insemination. Location preference of the does and the platform usage of their kits were evaluated. Kindling rate, litter size (total born, born alive, alive at 21 and 35 days) and kit mortality were not significantly influenced by the cage types. The litter weight at 21 days was higher in ECWP and ECPP cages than in the CF group (3516, 3576 and 3291 g, respectively; P<0.001), and at 35 days the difference was only significant between the groups ECPP and CF (8712 and 8060 g, respectively, P<0.05). At 21 and 35 days of age, the kits were heavier in large (ECWP and ECPP) than in conventional cages (CF and CN) (P<0.001). At the fifth insemination, the percentage of rabbits with sore hocks’ score of 1 to 2 (0=intact foot pads; 1=no hairs, callus formed, <2.5 cm; 2=no hairs, callus formed, >2.5 cm) and 3 to 4 (3=callus opened, cracks present; 4=wounds) were 58%, 60%, 78% and 48%, and 0%, 5%, 0% and 48% in groups ECPP, ECWP, CF and CN, respectively. Higher number of daily nest visits was observed for CF does than for ECWP does (12.5 v. 5.9; P<0.05). The frequency of multiple nursing events (>2/day) was higher in the CF group than in the ECWP group (12.1 v. 3.2%; P<0.01). Within large cages, the does were observed on the platform more frequently in the ECPP cages compared with the ECWP cages (56.9% v. 31.7%; P<0.001). Similarly, 2.7% and 0.2% of kits at 21 days of age, and 33.2% and 5.2% of kits at 28 days of age, were found on the platforms of ECPP and ECWP cages, respectively. In conclusion, cages larger than the conventional ones improved kits’ weaning weight, plastic footrests and plastic-mesh platforms in conventional and/or large cages reduced sore hocks’ problems, plastic-mesh platforms were more used by both does and kits compared with the wire-mesh platforms.  相似文献

Bone quality as well as its quantity at the implant interface is responsible for determining stability of the implant system. The objective of this study is to examine the nanoindentation based elastic modulus (E) at different bone regions adjacent to titanium dental implants with guided bone regeneration (GBR) treated with DBM and BMP-2 during different post-implantation periods. Six adult male beagle dogs were used to create circumferential defects with buccal bone removal at each implantation site of mandibles. The implant systems were randomly assigned to only GBR (control), GBR with demineralized bone matrix (DBM), and GBR with DBM + recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) (BMP) groups. Three animals were sacrificed at each 4 and 8 weeks of post-implantation healing periods. Following buccolingual dissection, the E values were assessed at the defects (Defect), interfacial bone tissue adjacent to the implant (Interface), and pre-existing bone tissue away from the implant (Pre-existing). The E values of BMP group had significantly higher than control and DBM groups for interface and defect regions at 4 weeks of post-implantation period and for the defect region at 8 weeks (p < 0.043). DBM group had higher E values than control group only for the defect region at 4 weeks (p < 0.001). The current results indicate that treatment of rhBMP-2 with GBR accelerates bone tissue mineralization for longer healing period because the GBR likely facilitates a microenvironment to provide more metabolites with open space of the defect region surrounding the implant.  相似文献

Many studies have indicated that serotonin and its transporter play a role in bone metabolism. In this study we investigated the effect of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI), fluoxetine (Prozac) on bone architecture and quality in growing female rats. We therefore administrated rats with clinically relevant doses of fluoxetine for a period of 6 months. DXA scans were performed during the treatment period in order to follow parameters as body weight, fat percentage and BMD. After 6 months of treatment, femurs were used to analyze bone architecture and bone strength, by means of microCT scans and three-point bending assays, respectively. We found a slightly diminished bone quality, reflected in a lower bone tissue strength, which was compensated by changes in bone geometry. As leptin and adiponectin could be possible factors in the serotonergic regulation of bone metabolism, we also determined the levels of these factors in plasma samples of all animals. Leptin and adiponectin levels were not different between the control group and fluoxetine-treated group, indicating that these factors were not involved in the observed changes in bone geometry and quality.  相似文献

Background aimsHeparin-conjugated fibrin (HCF) is a carrier for long-term release of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) and has been shown to promote bone formation in animal models. We performed an experimental study to determine the optimal dose of BMP-2 with an HCF carrier that promotes bone formation comparable to that of autograft while minimizing complications in spinal fusion.MethodsTwenty-four rabbits underwent posterolateral fusion of the L5–6 spinal segments. Different concentrations of HCF BMP-2 (1/10, 1/20, 1/30 or 1/40) were implanted in the spines of experimental rabbits, and autograft or INFUSE was implanted in the spines of control animals. Eight weeks after treatment, spinal fusion efficacy was evaluated by plain radiography, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), mechanical testing and histomorphometry.ResultsSimilar to autograft, the 1/40 HCF BMP-2 showed significant bone formation on micro-CT and histomorphometry with mechanical stability. However, the other HCF BMP-2 concentrations did not show significant bone formation compared with autograft. Although conventional BMP-2 (INFUSE) led to higher bone formation and stability, it also led to excessive ectopic bone and fibrous tissue formation.ConclusionsThis study suggests the optimal concentration of BMP-2 using HCF for spinal fusion, which may decrease the complications of high-dose conventional BMP-2.  相似文献

The use of modern prolific lines of rabbit does in intensive production systems leads to an increase in productivity but also causes a rise in several problems related to the does’ health status. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the litter size on the metabolic, inflammatory and plasma amino acid profile in rabbit does. The blood of 30 pregnant does was sampled on the 27th day of pregnancy. The does were retrospectively grouped according to the number of offspring into a high litter size group (HI, does with ≥ 12 kits; n= 16) and a low litter size group (LO, does with ≤ 11 kits; n= 14). Data were subjected to Pearson’s correlation analysis. Further, data were analysed in agreement to a completely randomized design in which the main tested effect was litter size. The linear or quadratic trends of litter size on parameters of interests were post hoccompared by using orthogonal contrasts. In addition, compared with the LO group, the HI group had lower levels of glucose (−5%; P< 0.01), zinc (−19%; P< 0.05), albumin (−6%; P< 0.05) and total cholesterol (−13%; P< 0.07), but the total bilirubin level was higher in the HI group (+14%; P< 0.05). Regarding the plasma amino acids, the HI group had lower concentrations of threonine (−15%), glycine (−16%), lysine (−16%) and tryptophan (−26%) and a higher level of glutamic acid (+43%; P< 0.05) compared with the LO group. The exclusively ketogenic amount of amino acids was lower (P< 0.06) in the HI (55.8 mg/100 ml) does compared with the LO does (56.8 mg/100 ml). These results show that a few days before delivery, rabbit does that gave birth to a higher number of offspring had a metabolic profile and an inflammatory status that was less favourable with respect to does who gave birth to a lower number of offspring. Moreover, the plasma amino acid profile points out that there was an enhanced catabolic condition in the rabbit does with a high number of gestated foetuses; it was likely related to the greater energy demand needed to support the pregnancy and an early inflammatory response.  相似文献

The design of total shoulder arthroplasty implants are guided by anatomy. The objective of this study was to develop statistical models to quantify shape and material property variation in the scapula. Material-mapped models were reconstructed from CT scans for a training set of subjects. Statistical shape (SSM) and intensity (SIM) models were created; SSM modes described scaling, changes in the medial border and acromial process, and elongation of the scapular blade. SIM modes captured bone quality changes in the anterior and inferior glenoid. Bone quality was independent of scapular morphology. Variation described by the statistical representations can inform implant design and sizing.  相似文献

Four morphologically distinct kinds of NADPHd-exhibiting axons (2.5–3.5 m in diameter) were identified in the sulcomarginal fasciculus as a part of the ventral column in the cervical and upper thoracic segments and in the long propriospinal bundle of the ventral column in Th3–L3 segments. Varicose NADPHd-exhibiting axons of the sympathetic preganglionic neurons, characterized by widely spaced varicosities, were found in the ventral column of Th2–L3 segments. A third kind of NADPHd-positive ultrafine axons, 0.3–0.5 m in diameter with numerous varicosities mostly spherical in shape, was identified in large number within Lissauer's tract. The last group of NADPHd-exhibiting axons (1.0–1.5 m in diameter) occurred in the Lissauer tract. Most of these axons were traceable for considerable distances and generated varicosities varying in shape from spherical to elliptical forms. The majority of NADPHd-exhibiting axons identified in the cuneate and gracile fascicles were concentrated in the deep portion of the dorsal column. An extremely reduced number of NADPHd-exhibiting axons, confirmed by a computer-assisted image-processing system, was found in the dorsal half of the gracile fascicle. Axonal NADPHd positivity could not be detected in a wide area of the lateral column consistent with the location of the dorsal spinocerebellar tract. Numerous, mostly thin NADPHd-positive axonal profiles were detected in the dorsolateral funiculus in all the segments studied and in a juxtagriseal portion of the lateral column as far as the cervical and lumbar enlargements. A massive occurrence of axonal NADPHd positivity was detected in the juxtagriseal layer of the ventral column all along the rostrocaudal axis of the spinal cord. The prominent NADPHd-exhibiting bundles containing thick, smooth, nonvaricose axons were identified in the mediobasal and central portion of the ventral column. First, the sulcomarginal fasciculus was found in the basal and medial portion of the ventral column in all cervical and upper thoracic segments. Second, more caudally, a long propriospinal bundle displaying prominent NADPHd positivity was localized in the central portion of the ventral column throughout the Th3–L3 segments.  相似文献
