Rapid rebreeding of winter- and spring-lambing ewes is essential if ewes are to lamb more than once per year, but fertility of lactating ewes is often low and early weaning of lambs may be undesirable in forage-based production systems. Selection to improve fertility in spring matings has been successful and led to development of ewes with a reduced seasonal anestrus. Potential for rapid rebreeding of lactating out-of-season breeding (OOS) ewes was tested in three studies. In Experiment 1, effects of short-term lamb removal on rebreeding was evaluated over 2 years using 71 January-lambing OOS ewes. At an average of 63 days postpartum, 36 ewes had lambs removed for 72 h, and all ewes were joined with rams. Circulating progesterone levels indicated that 74% of ewes ovulated before lamb separation; 91% of ewes mated within 5 weeks of ram exposure, 85% were diagnosed as pregnant and 75% lambed. The average interval between lambings was 225 days. In contrast to results observed in cattle, none of the measured variables was affected by lamb separation (P>0.20). Experiment 2 compared rebreeding performance of 24 OOS and 23 St. Croix ewes that lambed in January and averaged 60 days postpartum at ram introduction. More OOS ewes ovulated, mated and became pregnant during the first 21 days of ram exposure (83.3%, 58.3%, and 41.7%, respectively; P<0.001) compared with St. Croix ewes (26.1%, 0%, and 0%, respectively). After 39 days of ram exposure, pregnancy rates still favored OOS ewes (66.7% v. 39.1%; P=0.06), but the percentage of ewes that lambed did not differ (P>0.20) between OOS (47.8%) and St. Croix ewes (34.8%). In the third study, 34 March-lambing OOS ewes were exposed to rams on May 3 at an average of 40 days postpartum to characterize their reproductive performance. After 39 days of ram exposure, 52.9±8.7% of the ewes had mated, and 38.2±8.5% were diagnosed as pregnant. However, only 20.6±7.0% of the ewes produced viable lambs, suggesting a high level of uterine insufficiency. Spring fertility of lactating OOS ewes in these studies was one of the highest reported in the literature and indicated that selection for fertility in spring mating would improve reproductive performance in accelerated lambing programs. However, exposure of lactating OOS ewes to rams at 30 to 50 days postpartum was associated with high prenatal lamb mortality.  相似文献

Limited research has suggested that higher lambing densities increase interference from foreign ewes at lambing which disrupts the ewe-lamb bond and compromises lamb survival. This may be particularly evident in mobs of twin-bearing ewes compared to single-bearing ewes because a greater number of lambs are born per day. Therefore, we hypothesised that; (i) decreasing the mob size of ewes at lambing has a greater impact on the survival of twin-born lambs than single-born lambs; (ii) the relationship between mob size and lamb survival can be explained by differences in the rate of interaction with foreign ewes and lambs at lambing; and (iii) ewes will utilise a limited area of the paddock at lambing and thus lambing density will be defined by the distribution of ewes in the paddock rather than the paddock area. Merino ewes were allocated into a 2×2 factorial combination of ewe pregnancy status (single- or twin-bearing) and mob size (high (n=130 ewes) or low (n=50 ewes)) on day 140 from the start of joining. Each treatment had two replicates excepting the low mob size for twins which had a third replicate. Ewes lambed at a stocking rate of 11 ewes/ha. Feed-on-offer during lambing exceeded 2400 kg dry matter (DM)/ha. Ewe-lamb behaviour was observed and dead lambs were autopsied over 11 days during the peak of lambing. The distribution of ewes in each paddock was recorded every 2 h during daylight hours by counting the number of ewes occupying 2500 m2 grids. The proportion of ewes and their newborn progeny which interacted with foreign ewes at lambing did not differ between the high and low mob sizes for single- (24.9% v. 20.8%) or twin-bearing ewes (14.3% v. 19.6%; P=0.74). Similarly, interaction with foreign lambs did not differ between the high and low mob sizes for single- (14.5% v. 25.2%) and twin-bearing ewes (34.5% v. 26.4%; P=0.44). The distribution of ewes within the paddock did not differ between treatments (P=0.95). On average, single-bearing ewes which lambed at the high and low mob sizes occupied 34% and 36% of the paddock during daylight hours, and the corresponding values for twin-bearing ewes were 40% and 43%. Survival of twin-born lambs was lower than single-born lambs (75.3% v. 87.9%; P<0.01), however, lamb survival was not influenced by mob size regardless of birth type. These results suggest that higher mob sizes may not compromise lamb survival when feed-on-offer during lambing exceeds 2400 kg DM/ha.  相似文献

Low pasture allowance during gestation affects ewes’ BW at parturition, the bond with their lamb, lamb development, and thus also may affect their responses to weaning. The objectives were to determine if native pasture allowance from before conception until late pregnancy affects ewe–lamb behaviours at lambing, ewes’ milk yield, lambs’ BW, and the behavioural and physiological changes of ewes and lambs at weaning. From 23 days before conception until 122 days of pregnancy, 24 ewes grazed on two different native pasture allowances: high (10 to 12 kg of dry matter (DM)/100 kg of BW per day; HPA treatment; n=12) or low (5 to 8 kg of DM/100 kg of BW per day; LPA treatment; n=12). Thereafter, all ewes grazed on Festuca arundinacea and received rice bran and crude glycerine. Ewes’ body condition score (BCS) and BW were recorded during pregnancy and postpartum periods. Milk yield was determined on days 32, 41 and 54 after lambing. Lambs’ BW was recorded from birth until 72 days after lambing. Latency from parturition until the ewe licked her lamb, maternal behaviour score (a test that evaluates maternal attachment to the lamb) and latency for lamb to stand up and suckle were determined. The behaviour of the lambs and ewes was recorded before and after weaning (at 65 days). The ewes’ serum total protein, albumin and globulin concentrations were measured before and after weaning. The HPA ewes presented greater BW (P<0.005) and BCS (P<0.005) than the LPA ewes during pregnancy and postpartum (P<0.04), and had a greater milk yield than the LPA ewes (P<0.03). Treatments did not influence any behaviour at lambing, lambs’ BW, neither the ewes’ behavioural and physiological changes at weaning. HPA lambs paced and vocalized more than LPA lambs (P<0.0001). The variation of albumin concentration before and after weaning was greater in the HPA lambs than in the LPA lambs (P<0.0001). In conclusion, although ewes’ BW, BCS and milk production were affected by pasture allowance until late pregnancy, this did not affect the behaviours that lead to the establishment of the mother–young bond, nor the ewes’ behavioural responses at weaning. Lambs reared by ewes that grazed on low pasture allowance during pregnancy presented fewer behavioural changes and a lower decrease of albumin concentration after weaning. Lambs’ BW was not affected by the feeding received by their mothers.  相似文献

Postnatal photoperiodic experience plays a pivotal role in determining the timing of ovarian activity in female lambs. This study examines whether a photoperiodic history gained while in utero is able to influence this timing.Pregnant Soay ewes were maintained in either long days (n = 7, 18 h light : 6 h dark; group PLD) or short days (n = 12, y h light : 18 h dark; group PSD) from 25 days of gestation. At birth, female lambs (n = 8 per group) were transferred to long days for 10 weeks, and then placed under short days until the end of the experiment at 38 weeks of age. Blood samples were collected from lambs on the day of birth and three times weekly for the duration of the study and the resulting plasma assayed for progesterone and prolactin.Although both gestational photoperiods produced, at best, abbreviated periods of ovarian activity, lambs born to ewes which experienced long days during gestation (group PLD) exhibited elevated plasma progesterone concentrations significantly earlier (P < 0.05) than lambs born to ewes exposed to short days during gestation (group PSD) (mean ± SEM, 193 ± 17 versus 244 ± 14 days for PLD and PSD groups, respectively. Plasma prolactin concentrations in newborn lambs born between late December and early April were not affected by the ambient photoperiod, but reflected the artificial daylength experienced by their mothers during gestation. Lambs born to ewes maintained under long days during gestation (group PLD) had significantly higher prolactin concentrations on the day of birth than lambs born to ewes maintained under short days during gestation (group PSD) (45 ± 5.4 ng/ml versus 7 ± 3.7 ng/ml respectively, P < 0.001). The mean birth weight, rate of live weight gain and live body weight of lambs at the end of the experiment did not vary significantly between treatment groups. These results suggest that the ovine foetus is sensitive to photoperiodic information prior to birth, and develops a photoperiodic history which, under the present experimental conditions, modulates the subsequent endocrine status of the neonatal lamb.  相似文献

The research has shown the interesting contributions of shearing in mid-gestation on the performance of lambs from birth to weaning. Other studies have reported that shearing at early pregnancy influences the development of the placenta and lamb live weight at birth. However, there was a lack of information on the effect of early-prepartum shearing on the behavior of the offspring from weaning onward. This study evaluated the effect of shearing ewes at 50 days of gestation on the growth, reproductive behavior and response to a gastrointestinal parasite challenge in the female offspring from weaning to 18 months old. Fifty-seven Polwarth female lambs were used, 22 being singles and 35 twins born to ewes either shorn at 50 days of pregnancy (PS, n = 23) or shorn at 62 days postpartum (U, control, n = 34) resulting in four subgroups: single lambs born to PS ewes (n = 8), born to U ewes (n = 14), twin lambs born to PS ewes (n = 15) or born to U ewes (n = 20). All progeny were managed together under improved pasture with a minimum forage allowance of 6% live weight on dry basis. Body weight, body condition score and fecal eggs count were recorded every 14 days from weaning to 18 months of age. Concentrations of progesterone were measured weekly (from 4 to 10 months of age and from 14 to 18 months of age) to establish the onset of puberty. Ovulation rate at an induced and a natural heat (545 ± 1.0 and 562 ± 1.0 day old) was recorded. Prepartum shearing did not affect the age at puberty or the ovulation rate of female offspring, but those born as singles were more precocious ( P = 0.03) and heavier ( P = 0.02) at puberty than twin born lambs. Both the average value of parasite egg count ( P = 0.0 7) and the Famacha index ( P = 0.02) for the entire study period were lower in lambs born to prepartum shorn ewes than those born to postpartum shorn ewes. In conclusion, shearing at 50 days of gestation did not affect the growth or the reproductive behavior of female offspring. However, female lambs born from ewe shorn during gestation showed a better response to the parasitic challenge, and further research is required to confirm this.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted in consecutive years in which recently (Experiment 1) or temporarily (Experiment 2) weaned ewes and matched post-partum non-lactating flockmates (DRY) were exposed to a stimulus group of rams and oestrous ewes (10 and 20 in Experiment 1, 20 and 20 in Experiment 2) for 28 days in spring. Lactating ewes (n = 130) in Experiment 1 were isolated from their lambs 4 (W-4), 2 (W-2), 1 (W-1) or 0 (W-0) days in advance and exposed along with a group of 32 DRY flockmates. Lactating ewes in Experiment 2 (n = 230) were allocated to an unreplicated factorial of two levels of temporary weaning before stimulation (B0: control; B24: lambs removed 24 h before stimulation) by four levels of ewe-lamb contact imposed at the start of the stimulation (A0: control; A12, A24 and A36: lamb-ewe separation during the initial 12, 24 or 36 h of exposure); DRY ewes (n = 54) acted as an augmented factorial control. Oestrus (rump marks) and ovulation (laparoscopy on day 5 and on day 28 (Experiment 1) or day 32 (Experiment 2)) were recorded. Ovulation and oestrous responses in Experiment 1 were similar for DRY (90.6% and 55.2%, respectively) and recently weaned ewes (83.8% and 53.7%, respectively). Amongst recently weaned ewes, the immediate ovulation response to the rams and the proportion of ewes still cycling by day 28 tended to be lower (P = 0.065 and P = 0.011) in ewes weaned on the day of ram exposure (71.9% and 54.8% v. 87.8% and 80.0%, respectively). Ovulation rate was lower (P < 0.003) in W-2 ewes (1.3 ± 0.10) than in the other recently weaned groups. In Experiment 2, ovulation (83.3%) and oestrous (68.9%) responses in DRY ewes were higher (P = 0.022 and P = 0.053, respectively) than in lactating ewes (66.2% and 51.0%, respectively). More ewes ovulated (P = 0.036) in B24 (70.5%) than in B0 (61.8%). Ewes having their lambs returned 12 h after the onset of stimulation (A12) had poorer ovulation responses (54.9%) than control ewes (A0, 72.9%, P < 0.05); this was probably associated to lamb restitution after the sunset. Main conclusions were that (i) the presence of the lambs is a depressing factor of both ovulation and oestrous responses to the ram effect in lactating ewes, (ii) the ovulation response of lactating ewes will probably benefit from removing lambs for a period of 24 h before the onset of stimulation, (iii) until additional information becomes available, temporary weaning protocols should be designed avoiding lamb restitution during the night.  相似文献

A nutritional strategy for increasing lamb survival in Merino ewes mated in late spring/early summer was evaluated in a commercial flock over two consecutive years (Year 1, n=680; Year 2, n=325). The strategy combined the `ram effect' to synchronise oestrus and hence parturition, plus supplementary feeding of lupin grain for 14 days in the expected early post-parturient period. Supplementary lupin feeding commenced 12 days after the expected start of lambing. Lambing was highly synchronised over a 14-day period commencing 17–19 days after the expected start of lambing, in both years. Supplementary feeding did not affect lamb birthweight in either year but subsequent increases in weight were observed at weaning in Year 1 (1.4 kg; P=0.06) and tail docking in Year 2 (1.3 kg; P<0.05). Lamb survival was increased by 7 lambs per 100 ewes exposed to rams in both years. (Year 1 at weaning, NS; Year 2 at tail docking, P<0.001). It was concluded that the strategy improved both lamb survival and lamb performance possibly due to an effect of lupin supplementation on colostrum and subsequent milk production.  相似文献

Ewes of the Préalpes-du-Sud breed (n=112) were mated with fertile rams and were used to investigate the effect of the presence of vasectomized rams during pregnancy on reproductive outcomes. Ewes in the control group (n=56) were isolated from rams during the whole period of pregnancy, whereas those in the experimental group (n=56) were kept with vasectomized rams from day 10 post-mating until lambing. At day 10 post-mating, a series of blood samples was collected every 15 min for 8 h from five control ewes and five experimental ewes to determine their patterns of LH secretion. The introduction of the ram was associated with a rapid increase of pulsatile LH release. The lag between the introduction of the ram and the onset of the first episodic LH release was less than 15 min. The mean(±sem) number of LH pulses/4 h after the introduction of the ram (2.8±0.4) was significantly higher (P<0.01) than that observed/4 h before the introduction of the ram (1.4±0.2). Although more ewes were pregnant in the control group (87.5%) than in the ram-exposed group (82.1%), the difference was not significant. The presence of rams did not affect gestation length (145.8 days), overall lamb mortality (3.5%) or birth weights of single (3.96 kg), twin (3.24 kg) or triplet (2.59 kg) lambs. The proportion of ewes with multiple births in the control group (69.4%) was significantly greater (P<0.05) than that in the ram-exposed ewes (47.8%). The ewes in the control group had significantly more (P<0.01) twin lambs born alive (72.3%) than the ewes in the ram-exposed group (50.0%). In conclusion, the presence of vasectomized rams during early pregnancy affected the incidence of multiple births but did not affect pregnancy rate or gestation length. The altered fertility of ewes exposed to vasectomized rams may reflect changes in embryonic loss during early pregnancy.  相似文献

Perinatal mortality of lambs is on average 20% of lambs born in extensive Australian grazing systems, constituting a substantial production loss and welfare concern. Hypoxia resulting from prolonged or difficult births contributes to lower rates of lamb survival, and caffeine may reduce the effects of hypoxia. This study evaluated whether oral supplementation of grazing ewes with caffeine could improve lamb survival. Pregnant Merino ewes (n=492) which had been naturally mated to Merino rams in February/March were allocated to three replicates of control (no caffeine) or caffeine treatments. Caffeine was fed daily in troughs in each paddock at a rate of 1.6 g/ewe per day (estimated at 20 mg/kg live weight) from the day before the first lamb was born, for 14 days, with lambing continuing for 6 weeks. Intake was facilitated using 320 g/day per ewe of barley grain with molasses, which was fed to both treatments. The proportion of lambs born alive during the period of supplementation did not differ (P>0.05) between treatments. The proportion mortality of lambs to 1 day of age was lower (P=0.029) in the caffeine (0.01) compared with the control (0.16) treatment for lambs born during the 1st week of supplementation, but not in later weeks. This difference in mortality for lambs born in the 1st week of supplementation was maintained to marking age (caffeine 0.09; control 0.30; P=0.027). Extreme weather during the 2nd week of supplementation may have prevented any reduction in mortality due to caffeine in that week. Feeding caffeine to a naturally lambing flock of grazing ewes may be a highly effective and commercially practical method of increasing lamb survival, but further research is needed to confirm these results, and caffeine be regulated for use.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the energy restriction of gestation of adult ewes from day 45 to day 115 on lamb live performance parameters, carcass and meat traits. In experiment I, dietary energy was restricted at 70% of the metabolizable energy (ME) requirements, after which ewes were re-fed ad libitum until lambing. In experiment II, dietary energy was restricted at 60% of the ME requirements, and ewes were re-fed to ME requirements until lambing. All ewes grazed together from the end of the restriction periods to weaning. Lambs were weaned and lot fed until slaughter. Feed intake, weight gain and feed efficiency were recorded, and body fat thickness and ribeye area (REA) were measured in the longissimus thoracis muscle. After slaughter, carcass weight and yield, fat depth, carcass and leg length, and frenched rack and leg weights and yields were determined. Muscle fiber type composition, Warner-Bratzler shear force, pH and color were determined in the longissimus lumborum muscle. In experiment I, energy restriction followed by ad libitum feeding affected lamb birth weight (P<0.05); however, no effects (P>0.05) were observed on later BW, REA, BF or carcass traits. Lambs born to non-restricted-fed ewes had higher (P<0.05) weight and yield of the frenched rack cut and their meat tended (P=0.11) to be tender compared with that of lambs from restricted ewes. The percentage of oxidative muscle fibers was lower for lambs born to non-restricted ewes (P<0.05); however, no effects of ewe treatment were observed on other muscle fiber types. For experiment II, energy restriction followed by ME requirements feeding, affected (P<0.01) pre-weaning live weight gain, weaning and final weights. Lambs from restricted ewes had higher (P<0.05) feed intake as % of leg weight and a trend to be less efficient (P=0.16) than lambs from unrestricted dams. Ribeye area and BF were not influenced by treatment. Treatment significantly affected slaughter weight, but had no effects on carcass yield and traits or on meat traits. The results obtained in both experiments indicate submitting ewes to energy restriction during gestation affects the performance of their progeny but the final outcome would depend on the ewe’s re-feeding level during late gestation and the capacity of the offspring to compensate the in utero restriction after birth.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to examine the changes in colostral production and composition in Karakul ewes fed at different nutritional levels. Pregnant ewes were randomly allotted to one of four groups (n = 20 per group) 90 days after artificial insemination. Three groups were fed with total mixed rations supplying 90, 100 and 110% of the NRC requirements, respectively, and the last group served as the control feeding on natural vegetations until parturition. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein during late pregnancy, and soon after lambing. Fifteen singleton ewes from each group were hand-milked completely at 1, 12 and 24 h post-lambing. Samples of colostrum were obtained and the lambs were fed with their ewe's colostrum (30 g/kg BW) at each milking. Blood samples were taken from the lambs before receiving their first colostrum, and again at 24 and 48 h post-lambing. Ewes on 110% NRC diet produced significantly (P < 0.01) more colostrum than did the ewes in other groups. Feeding level did not have a significant effect on the IgG level of the colostrums and blood sera of ewes and lambs. Mean IgG concentration in the ewe serum was greatest during late gestation (1–2 months before lambing) and were significantly reduced at 1 h post-lambing. Non-immunoglobulin composition of colostrum was not significantly affected by the treatment. There was a significant correlation between IgG levels of the ewe serum and colostrum (r = 0.64, P < 0.0001). Mean weight of the ewes on the control ration at lambing and the mean birth weight of their lambs were significantly lower as compared with other dietary groups. The results suggested that hand-feeding of Karakul ewes on poor rangeland vegetation with 110% NRC for 2 months before parturition increased colostral production, decreased the ewe loss and increased lamb birth weight which is beneficial to lamb survival.  相似文献

The Muzaffarnagari sheep, a mutton-producing breed of India, is generally known for its fast growth rate and high feed conversion efficiency. The study identified the causes of perinatal and postnatal deaths and factors contributing to the cause of mortalities in lambs. Data were recorded for 4628 lambs born to Muzaffarnagari ewes in single-sire matings from 165 rams, between 1978 and 2002. The least-squares means for overall lamb mortality from birth to 1 year of age in the flock was 12.6% (582/4628), while the overall pre- and post-weaning mortality rate averaged 6.6% and 6.0%, respectively. The mortality rate of the lambs declined as the lambs grew older. The major causes associated with lamb losses were pneumonia (31.4%), digestive disorders (14.6%), starvation (9.6%), endoparasitism (5.0%), septicaemia and toxaemia (10.1%), accidental (2.1%) and undetermined causes (27.2%), respectively. The main causes of early lamb mortality (within 15 days of birth) were pneumonia followed by starvation. The highest lamb mortalities occurred within the first 15 days of life. The year of birth of the lamb significantly affected (P < 0.01) the cumulative lamb mortality rate at all ages. The sire of the lamb also had a significant (P < 0.01) effect on lamb mortality rate at all ages. Lambs reared under an intensive feeding management system had a remarkably (P < 0.01) lower mortality rate than lambs maintained under a semi-intensive management system, at 3 months of age and later. The lamb losses were significantly (P < 0.01) higher in ram lambs than in females during the post-weaning stages. The linear regressions of lamb birth weight and dam weight at lambing were highly significant (P < 0.01) with lamb mortality rate during pre- and post-weaning stages. Logistic regression analyses revealed lambs maintained under a semi-intensive system, to be at a greater risk of dying from all ailments than lambs maintained under intensive feeding systems. Male lambs had greater risk of death from respiratory, digestive and other causes, compared to their female counterparts. The findings of this study revealed causes of pre-weaning lamb mortalities to be mainly due to a low birth weight and non-parasitic diseases (predominantly pneumonia). We tested the ability of Merino and Merino × Romanov ewes and lambs to recognise each other at a distance when given the choice between an alien partner and their own. Two groups of animals were studied. In the first group, multiparous ewes and their lambs were housed permanently indoors at a stocking-rate of 1 ewe/2 m2. In the second group, ewes and lambs were run permanently outside in a paddock at a stocking rate of 1 ewe/500 m2. Of animals living outside, 87% of ewes recognised their own lamb (100% of multiparous dams versus 84% of primiparous ones, P = 0.02). This differed significantly from a random choice. By contrast, the proportion of correct choices by ewes living inside (all multiparous) was significantly lower (64%) and did not differ from a random choice at the 5% level. Lambs reared outside recognised their dam in 95% of cases, versus 72% in lambs reared indoors (P = 0.01). Both frequencies differed significantly from a choice at random. It is concluded that the environmental conditions in which ewes and lambs are maintained can influence their ability to select their partners at a distance with the help of auditory and visual cues.  相似文献

Vitamin E and selenium have been reported to improve immune function across a range of species. Ewes lambing on poor-quality dry pasture in autumn in Western Australia are at risk of being deficient in vitamin E and selenium at lambing thus predisposing their lambs to deficiencies and increasing the risk of infection and disease. This study tested the hypotheses that (i) supplementation of autumn-lambing ewes with vitamin E plus selenium in late gestation will increase the concentrations of vitamin E and selenium in plasma in the ewe and lamb and (ii) that the increased concentrations of vitamin E and selenium in plasma in the lambs will improve their innate and adaptive immune responses and thus survival. Pregnant Merino ewes were divided into a control group (n=58) which received no supplementation or a group supplemented with vitamin E plus selenium (n=55). On days 111, 125 and 140 of pregnancy ewes in the vitamin E plus selenium group were given 4 g all-rac-α-tocopherol acetate orally. On day 111 the ewes were also given 60 mg of selenium as barium selenate by subcutaneous injection. The concentrations of α-tocopherol and selenium were measured in ewes and/or lambs from day 111 of pregnancy to 14 weeks of age±10 days (weaning). Immune function of the lamb was assessed by analysing the numbers and phagocytic capacities of monocytes and polymorphonuclear leucocytes and plasma IgG and anti-tetanus toxoid antibody concentrations between birth and 14 weeks of age±10 days. Maternal supplementation with vitamin E plus selenium increased the concentration of α-tocopherol in plasma (1.13 v. 0.67 mg/l; P<0.001) and selenium in whole blood (0.12 v. 0.07 mg/l; P<0.01) of the ewes at lambing compared with controls. Supplementation also increased the concentration of α-tocopherol (0.14 v. 0.08 mg/l; P<0.001) and selenium (0.08 v. 0.05 mg/l; P<0.01) in lambs at birth compared with controls. There was no significant effect of supplementation on immune function or survival in the lambs.  相似文献

It is difficult to separate an age-dependent fall in nitrogen use efficiency (NUE; N balance/N intake) in growing ruminants from a progressively decrease in animal protein requirements over time. This study examined the effect of dietary protein content on N partitioning, digestibility and N isotopic discrimination between the animal and its diet (Δ15Nanimal-diet) evaluated at two different fattening periods (early v. late). Twenty-four male Romane lambs (age: 19 ± 4.0 days; BW: 8.3 ± 1.39 kg) were equally allocated to three dietary CP treatments (15%, 17% and 20% CP on a DM basis). Lambs were reared with their mothers until weaning, thereafter housed in individual pens until slaughter (45 kg BW). During the post-weaning period, lambs were allocated twice (early fattening (30 days post-weaning) and late fattening (60 days post-weaning)) to metabolic cages for digestibility and N balance study. When diet CP content increased, the average daily gain of lambs increased (P < 0.05) while the age at slaughter decreased (P = 0.01), but no effect was observed on feed efficiency (P > 0.10). Diet CP content had limited effect on lamb carcass traits. Higher fibre digestibility was observed at the early v. late fattening period (P < 0.001). The N intake and the urinary N excretion increased when diet CP content increased (P < 0.001) and when shifting from early to late fattening period (P < 0.001). Faecal N excretion (P = 0.14) and N balance (P > 0.10) were not affected by diet CP content. Nitrogen digestibility increased (P < 0.001) as the diet CP content increased and on average it was greater at late v. early fattening period (P = 0.02). The NUE decreased (P = 0.001) as the diet CP content increased and as the lamb became older (P < 0.001). However, the age-dependent fall in NUE observed was lower at high v. low dietary CP content (CP × age interaction; P = 0.04). The Δ15Nanimal-diet was positively correlated (P < 0.05) with N intake (r = 0.59), excretion of faecal N (r = 0.41), urinary N (r = 0.69) and total manure N (r = 0.64), while negatively correlated with NUE (r = −0.57). Overall, the experiment showed NUE was lower in older lambs and when lambs were fed high diet CP content, and that Δ15Nanimal-diet was a useful indicator not only for NUE but also for urinary N excretion, which is a major environmental pollution factor on farm.  相似文献

Gastrointestinal parasitism places serious constraints on small ruminant production. The situation has been exacerbated by development of drug resistance in many parasite populations, leading to interest in identification of animals with genetically mediated resistance or tolerance to nematode infections. This study assessed the response to natural infection with gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in Djallonké sheep during the rainy season in the Sudan-Guinea Savannah region of Burkina Faso. Haemonchus contortus is the most prevalent GIN at this site and time. Djallonké lambs (n=434) were sampled from 40 households and evaluated at a common location in southern Burkina Faso. Lambs were dewormed with levamisole at 2 to 6 months of age and returned to infected pastures. Fecal egg counts (FEC), packed cell volumes (PCV), and FAffa Malan CHArt (FAMACHA©) scores were determined 28 and 35 days after deworming. Lamb mortality was monitored throughout the experiment. Least-squares means for BW increased from 13.8±0.2 kg at 28 days to 14.0±0.2 kg at 35 days (P<0.01). Simple means and medians for FEC were 615 and 100, respectively, at 28 days and 850 and 175, respectively, at 35 days. The FEC exhibited strong right skewness. Following logarithmic transformation and back-transformation of resulting least-squares means to the original scale, FEC were higher (P<0.01) for males (208±27) than females (122±10). Least-squares means for PCV decreased (P<0.001) from 28 (36.3±0.5%) to 35 days (33.7±0.5%), and were higher (P<0.01) for females (36.0±0.4%) than males (33.9±0.7%). Correlations (r) between repeated measurements of BW, FEC, PCV and FAMACHA scores at 28 and 35 days were all positive (P<0.001). The correlation between FAMACHA scores and PCV was negative at 28 (r=−0.14) and 35 days (r=−0.18) (P<0.001). This study revealed that BW was an easily measured predictor of the ability of the lamb to resist infection with GIN and maintain PCV, and confirmed that FAMACHA scores are useful indicators of differences in FEC. Approximately 40% of female and 30% of male lambs did not show detectable levels of infection (i.e. FEC=0) under field conditions. The great variability that was observed in FEC and PCV suggests potential to use Djallonké sheep in breeding programs to enhance resistance to GIN.  相似文献

The reproductive characteristics of Chinese Hu sheep are reviewed. Male and female lambs reached puberty at a mean age of 120 days and 180 days, respectively, with an average body weight of 18.54 ± 1.48 kg (n = 31) and 22.75 ± 1.98 kg (n = 24). Adult male and female sheep reproduced throughout the year. On average, ewes lambed 1.65 times per year (n = 1482). The mean ovulation rate of adult ewes was over 2.2 (n = 46). The average litter size of 150863 ewes raised under extensive conditions was 2.06. The early sexual maturity of male and female lambs was respectively related to high concentrations of testosterone and 17β-E2 in blood plasma in the earlier postnatal period. In the first of three experiments, eight ovariectomised Greyface ewes primed with exogenous progesterone were used to provide quantitative data on the effects of two contrasting feeding levels (0.3 vs. 1.4 × maintenance) on plasma progesterone concentrations. Over the 9 day study period, mean (± SEM) daily progesterone concentrations were 4.3 ± 0.13 and 3.3 ± 0.17 μg l−1 for the low and high feeding regimens, respectively (P = 0.06), indicating that high feed intake suppressed circulating progesterone levels. The second experiment examined the effect in superovulated Finn-Dorset ewes of a diet supplying either 0.6 (Group L, n = 8) or 2.3 (Group H, n = 8) times their daily energy needs for maintenance, from 1 day before introduction of exogenous progesterone to the time of insemination, on plasma progesterone concentrations and the viability of ova recovered 4 days after insemination. Mean (± SEM) plasma progesterone concentrations were 4.5 ± 0.17 μg l−1 and 2.8 ± 0.16 μg l−1 for L and H ewes, respectively, during the 12 day priming period (P < 0.001). Eight hours after progesterone withdrawal, levels had fallen to 0.9 ± 0.06 μg l−1 and 0.8 ± 0.07 μg l−1, respectively, then rose to 17.8 ± 3.01 μg l−1 and 12.9 ± 2.50 μg l−1 (P > 0.10) at ovum collection. Intervals (mean ± SEM) to oestrous onset (14.5 ± 0.38 h) and the luteinising hormone (LH) surge (27.1 ± 0.98 h) were unaffected by feed intake. Mean (± SEM) ovulation rates (8.1 ± 1.57 vs. 7.8 ± 1.10) and numbers of ova recovered (5.0 ± 1.39 vs. 4.8 ± 1.11) were also similar for each group. However, the proportions of ova considered viable (over 32 cells) at recovery were 0.53 and 0.22 for L and H groups, respectively (P < 0.005). Following 72 h culture (Tissue Culture Medium-199 (M199) + 10% foetal calf serum (FCS)), 0.55 and 0.27, respectively, had developed to blastocysts (P < 0.025). Of ova assessed as viable at recovery, similar proportions (0.86 vs. 0.75) from L and H treatments developed to blastocysts, with corresponding nuclei counts (mean ± SEM) of 55 ± 5.2 and 55 ± 13.2. The third experiment used 12 superovulated Greyface ewes, each offered a different feed level within the range 0.6–2.5 × maintenance, to determine the nature of the relationship between feeding level, pre-ovulatory progesterone concentrations and ovum development at Day 2 following insemination and subsequently during 7 day co-culture (M199 + FCS). Increases in feeding level were accompanied by linear decreases in plasma progesterone (r2 = 0.79, P < 0.001), the interval to oestrous onset (r2 = 0.52, P < 0.01) and timing of the LH surge (r2 = 0.32, P < 0.06). Although undetectable at ovum collection, and somewhat equivocal after 4 day culture, high feeding levels prior to ovulation reduced the proportion of ova (0.16 vs. 0.58) developing to or beyond the expanding blastocyst stage after 7 day culture. Quantitative indices of cell division and protein synthesis confirmed this. In conclusion, excessive feeding during follicular recruitment and oocyte maturation in superovulated ewes imparts a legacy of embryonic loss and developmental retardation.  相似文献

Concentrates-fed lamb meat is often associated with an unfavourable lipid profile (high levels of saturated and/or n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids; SFA and PUFA). For this reason, Spanish sheep producers from Mediterranean areas are turning to traditional grazing by ewes to obtain healthier lamb meat. The objective of this research was to determine the effects of maternal grazing on the fatty acid (FA) composition of weaned lamb meat. The ewes (Segureña breed) were allocated to two different rearing systems during pregnancy (5 months) and lactation (45 days): (i) feeding indoors on barley grain and lucerne pellets; (ii) grazing on cereal stubble, fallow land and seasonal pastures consisting of Mediterranean shrubs, herbs and trees. Two groups of 20 autumn and spring lambs were sampled. The lambs were weaned at 13.1±0.9 kg and 45.0±4.1 days age and fed on grain-based concentrates until they reached 24.8±2.1 kg live weight (light lambs slaughtered at 98.3±3.6 days of age). The FA content was determined in the intramuscular loin fat by gas chromatography using a flame ionization detector. The ewe diet did not affect the levels of the main lamb FAs (C18:1c+t, C16:0 and C18:2c), and so did not provide any additional reduction in fat saturation. Saturated fatty acids represented around 40% of total FAs determined in the meat. Ewe grazing acted as an n-3 PUFA-promoting diet, providing a lamb meat with a lower n-6/n-3 ratio. Spring lamb meat had higher proportions of n-3 PUFA (C18:3n-3, C20:5, C22:5 and C22:6) and conjugated linoleic acid (C18:2c9t11+c11t9) to the detriment of the n-6 PUFAs (C20:4, C20:2 and C22:4), while autumn lamb meat also had higher levels of C18:3n-3 and C18:3n-6, and lower level of C20:4, which points to little seasonal differences. The n-6/n-3 ratio achieved by ewe grazing fell from 8.2 to 4.1 (Spring) and from 7.6 to 5.5 (Autumn), values which are close to those recommended in human diet for good cardiovascular health. These n-6/n-3 reductions were associated with lower levels of total PUFA and C20:4n-6. Our research concluded that grazing on stubble and Mediterranean shrubland by ewes, a sustainable rearing practice involving local agro resources, contributed to obtaining weaned lamb meat with a more favourable lipid profile and so can be recommended to sheep farmers.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing corn with an increasing concentration of high-purity glycerol (>99%) on growth performance, economical efficiency, blood constituents and nutrient digestibility of growing lambs. In experiment one, 24 male lambs (initial BW=33.6±6.0 kg; age=6.75±0.75 months) were randomly assigned to one of the three experimental treatments containing 0%, 5% or 10% glycerol to replace corn in concentrate. In experiment two, nine lambs (initial BW=44.7±2.2 kg, age=8.84±0.32 months) were used in a digestion trial with three treatments (three lambs per treatment) with glycerol replacing corn at 0%, 5% or 10% in the concentrate. Total dry matter (DM) intake decreased quadratically (P=0.003) with increasing concentration of glycerol in the diet. Lambs fed glycerol diets had greater average daily gain (P=0.005) and better feed efficiency (P=0.002) compared with the control. Feed costs were also reduced with glycerol inclusion. Glycerol supplementation did not affect serum concentrations of total protein, albumin, globulin, total lipid, cholesterol and glucose concentrations. Glycerol supplementation had no effect (P>0.05) on organic matter and CP digestion, but improved DM (P=0.0003), crude fiber (P=0.10), ether extract (P=0.0002) and nitrogen-free extract (P=0.05) digestion. In conclusion, glycerol can replace corn up to 10% of DM in the diets of growing lambs.  相似文献
