Light intensity preferences of Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852) were evaluated in an indoor fiber glass trough, consisting of five equal length (4 m) zones with light intensities varying from dark to 1,000 lux (L), situated at the ‘Las Vegas del Guadiana’ fish farm in Extremadura (Spain). Four trials were performed, with different light zones set in three at sections of the trough, and the fourth providing a control with one light density (300 L) throughout the trough. Whereas the highest intensity (1,000 L) was preferred in trials 1 and 2, the dimmest condition (D) was favored in trial 3. Crayfish showed a strong preference to both outside ends of the trough, and the “end effect” of the trough on position of the crayfish was found to be stronger than the impact of light intensity.  相似文献

The introduction of some crustacean species has produced alterations of freshwater environments and declines of native species worldwide. The red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii Girard, was introduced in the Southwest Iberian Peninsula in the 1970’s, producing severe impacts on rice agriculture and on native biota such as macrophytes, gastropods, native crayfish and amphibians. We studied the distribution of P. clarkii in two areas of SW Iberian Peninsula: the Sado River basin (SW Portugal), an area colonized by this species around 1990, and the Parque Natural del Entorno de Doñana (SW Spain), colonized soon after its introduction in the Iberian Peninsula, in the 1970’s. Our main goal was to determine which factors limit crayfish distribution, which could help to identify the most effective management practices to contain its spread. Procambarus clarkii was found in most types of water bodies, including small and shallow ones. Distance to a crayfish source was the single predictor variable explaining crayfish occurrence in most types of habitats and in both areas. The only exception was for the Sado permanent stream points, where crayfish presence was negatively affected by an interaction between elevation and flow velocity. Other habitat characteristics have apparently little or no importance for its successful colonization. Moreover, this study indicated that overland dispersal is apparently a frequent phenomenon in this species. Our findings can be used to determine which habitats are most likely to be colonized by the crayfish and to develop practical measures which may limit its spread and minimize its impacts.  相似文献

Red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, presently is an important aquatic commercial species in China. The crayfish is a hot area of research focus, and its genetic improvement is quite urgent for the crayfish aquaculture in China. However, the knowledge of its genomic landscape is limited. In this study, a survey of P. clarkii genome was investigated based on Illumina’s Solexa sequencing platform. Meanwhile, its genome size was estimated using flow cytometry. Interestingly, the genome size estimated is about 8.50 Gb by flow cytometry and 1.86 Gb with genome survey sequencing. Based on the assembled genome sequences, total of 136,962 genes and 152,268 exons were predicted, and the predicted genes ranged from 150 to 12,807 bp in length. The survey sequences could help accelerate the progress of gene discovery involved in genetic diversity and evolutionary analysis, even though it could not successfully applied for estimation of P. clarkii genome size.  相似文献

The American red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852) was introduced in 1973 into the Iberian Peninsula for commercial purposes. As a result of both the expansion from the Iberian Peninsula and, probably, further introductions in other European countries, now it is widely distributed throughout much of Europe. The ecological impacts of this invading crayfish have received increasing attention, but nothing is known about its symbiotic entocytherid ostracods outside the American continent. The present survey has examined more than 200 crayfishes from 12 localities distributed over a wide area of Eastern Spain. Entocytherid ostracods were extracted from individual crayfishes and they were identified, counted, assigned to developmental instars and sexed. In all the study locations but one, we found at least one crayfish individual infected by entocytherid ostracods and the species determined was the same in all cases: Ankylocythere sinuosa (Rioja, 1942). The number of ostracods on individual P. clarkii varied notably in relation to crayfish size and also differed significantly among sampling sites. The crayfish size effects on ostracod densities might be related to the amount of resources and to the crayfish age and moulting frequency affecting ostracod distribution and population structure. In addition, the spatial variation in ostracod densities could also be related to site-specific habitat traits and the variability of crayfish population dynamics. Our study represents the first citation of an alien entocytherid species in Europe and demonstrates its wide distribution in the Iberian Peninsula. Further research is needed to know the potential effects of this ostracod species on the ecology of P. clarkii and of native species, with implications on the management of this aquatic invader.  相似文献

In 2006 an unusual find of Procambarus clarkii, today considered one of the most dangerous exotic crayfish, was made within the preserved brackish Mediterranean biotope “Palude di Torre Flavia” (Rome, Italy). Here the investigation on the population structure and dynamics of P. clarkii inhabiting this brackish wetland is presented in an attempt to describe the life history pattern in this type of habitat. The present study showed that this species has a lower growth rate and higher longevity than other studied European P. clarkii populations, and that it can damage brackish habitats and human livelihoods. The main results of this study chiefly concern the differences found between several life-history parameters of the studied population and those obtained in previous studies. These results showed the high ecological plasticity of P. clarkii, indicate the need to intervene before the species spreads further in brackish water, for the conservation of Mediterranean coastal habitats.  相似文献

This study examines the expression of the photopigment gene in the developing retina of the freshwater crayfish Procambarus clarkii(Crustacea, Malacostraca, Decapoda). Both sense and anti-sense RNA probes were used for in situ hybridization (ISH) of whole embryos collected at various stages during development. A characteristic of retinal development is the formation of screening pigment in the retinular cells of the retinal ommatidia. This pigmentation is seen as a band that begins at the lateral side of the retinal field and progresses medially. At hatching the retina is approximately 50% pigmented. ISH of whole embryos shows that expression of the photopigment gene by the retinular cells correlates with the extent of the screening pigment band in the retina and with the presence of rhabdoms within the ommatidia. Sections taken through embryos after being hybridized indicate that staining is localized in the cytoplasm of the retinular cells and in the axonal region below the basement membrane. No staining reaction was seen in the rhabdoms of older ommatidia. ISH staining was also seen at the anterior midline of the protocerebrum where extraretinal photoreceptors have been reported. The data presented here show a close correlation of opsin expression within the retinular cells of the ommatidia and the formation of the very early rhabdoms, similar to Drosophila. The results will be discussed in relation to recent studies in Drosophila that suggest rhodopsin plays a role in effecting the organization of the terminal web-like cytoskeleton at the base of the developing rhabdom microvilli.  相似文献

This study analyzes the population structure and dynamics of an invasive population of Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852) in a Mediterranean wetland using the Bhattacharya’s and Von Bertallanfy’s analytical methods. The main purpose was to collect biological data necessary for the management of this nuisance species. A maximum of five age classes were identified for both sexes, three of which being composed of a few or zero individuals. Age classes were classified into two subgroups––spring (SpL) and summer (SuL) lines––on the basis of the different hatching periods. Individuals of SpL showed a faster growth rate and reached a larger body size than those belonging to SuL, probably because they were able to grow for a longer time. No between-sex differences were found in growth patterns except for the asymptotic length (L), which was reached faster by the females. Other population properties were analyzed, such as a high mortality rate, a maximum longevity of 4 years, and a low mean life-time (<12 months). Finally, a relatively small fraction of individuals seemed to survive after the first reproductive peak in spring. Consequently, the structure and dynamics of the study population seem to reveal its stability and spreading potential, as a confirmation of the invasiveness of P. clarkii in Mediterranean wetlands. The red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, is a paradigmatic invader of freshwater systems. Several attempts have been made to mitigate its multiple impacts but none was successful. Among the different methods proposed, the use of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) as an indigenous predator is promising but the available information about its predatory ability on crayfish is to date scanty. To fill this gap in knowledge, we ran three experiments in wetlands and irrigation ditches in Italy. The first experiment, in the laboratory, was aimed at quantifying the extent of predation by eels on crayfish, the second, in enclosures, the size classes of crayfish mainly preyed and the possible effect of the eels on P. clarkii behaviour, and the third, in the field, its ability to effectively reduce crayfish populations. Results showed that eels prey on small-sized or soft crayfish, attacking them from the back; an indirect effect was to reduce crayfish trophic activity, which in turn might increases crayfish mortality due to starvation and decreases impact on the community. However, as shown in the field, the use of eels should be appropriately calibrated to the context of application. Taken together, our results show that eels might be used as a complement to the traditional trapping method. However, additional studies are necessary to understand the adequate number of eels to be introduced and to develop appropriate methods for quantifying such effects.  相似文献

Impacts of invasive species may manifest most strongly if these organisms are highly distinct functionally from the native species they often replace. Yet, should we expect functional differences between native and invasive species of generalist organisms like freshwater crayfish? Some existing evidence has pointed to native and invasive crayfish species as ecologically equivalent. We contribute to this literature by comparing the trophic niches of the globally invasive crayfishes Pacifastacus leniusculus and Procambarus clarkii, by applying carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses to replicated allopatric (alone) and sympatric (together) lake populations in western Washington State, USA, where P. clarkii has been recently introduced and P. leniusculus is presumed native. Our study corrected for potential inherent differences in lake food webs as a consequence of lake abiotic or biotic characteristics using random effects in linear mixed effects models. We found that although overall trophic niche size or area of these species was not significantly different, P. leniusculus was significantly higher in trophic position than P. clarkii when also accounting for the effects of body size, sex, and lakes as random effects. This pattern of increased trophic position of P. leniusculus over P. clarkii was conserved over time in one sympatric lake for which we had data over multiple years. Cumulatively, our findings point to trophic differences between the globally cosmopolitan crayfishes P. leniusculus and P. clarkii, particularly when accounting for the ways that ecosystem context can affect food web structure of communities and the trophic resources available to these consumers.  相似文献

Crayfish establish social dominance hierarchies through agonistic interactions, and these hierarchies are maintained through assessment of social status. Chemical signals influence several aspects of fighting behavior, but the specific chemosensory sensilla involved in detecting these signals in crayfish are unknown. The goal of our study was to examine the importance of aesthetasc sensilla—olfactory sensors on the antennules of decapod crustaceans—in regulating changes in fighting behavior in crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, over the course of repeated pairings. We selectively ablated aesthetascs from pairs of crayfish after the first day of trials and compared the behavior of these ablated animals to that of pairs of intact controls. Results show that unablated crayfish significantly decreased the number and duration of fights over repeated pairings, whereas crayfish lacking aesthetascs continued to engage in similar amounts of fighting across all three trial days. This difference shows that aesthetascs regulate fighting behavior in P. clarkii.  相似文献

Aphanomyces astaci (Saprolegniales, Oomycetes) is classified among the 100 world’s worst invasive species. This species is endemic to North America and has been introduced into Europe by imports of their hosts, the North American crayfish species. As a consequence, extensive mass mortalities involved several populations of the European crayfish. Here, we checked its occurrence in four Italian populations of Procambarus clarkii, the most widespread alien crayfish in Italy. Digital image analyses and image processing techniques were used to select micro-melanized areas in the subabdominal cuticle of 2–10 crayfish per population. All the selected areas tested positive for A. astaci ITS nrDNA specific primers; moreover, the obtained sequences clearly corresponded to A. astaci, thus revealing that P. clarkii is an active carrier of this oomycete in Italy. Decisions are to be urgently made to control the spread of both P. clarkii and A. astaci for the conservation of the indigenous crayfish biodiversity.  相似文献

Introduced populations of Guekensia demissa occur on the west coast of North America. They have been reported in San Francisco Bay, four southern California wetlands, and in Estero de Punta Banda (EPB), Baja California Norte, Mexico. We randomly sampled benthic invertebrates in four habitat types within EPB: marsh, channel, mudflat and pan. Geukensia demissa was the most abundant bivalve in the wetland at EPB. It was significantly associated with the native cordgrass, Spartina foliosa, and occurred at higher average densities in vegetated marsh sites (24/m2) and Spartina-dominated tidal channels (35/m2), compared to mudflat (0/m2), and pan (0/m2) sites. We estimated that the total biomass of this invader was over four times that of the next most abundant bivalve, Tagelus spp., in EPB. We examined G. demissa for parasites and found that only a few native parasites colonized this introduced host at very low prevalences and intensities. We performed bird surveys to determine the habitat overlap and potential impact of this mussel on the EPB population of light-footed clapper rails (Rallus longirostrus levipes), an endangered species in the United States. The high abundance of G. demissa in EPB, its presence in clapper rail habitat, and its known effects on salt marsh habitat in it’s native range, warrant further investigations of the impact of this invader in EPB and elsewhere.  相似文献

Temporary ponds, acknowledged for their conservation value, are colonized by the invasive crayfish Procambarus clarkii. We have tested the consequences of this colonization for the ecosystem under two contrasted scenarios: one single individual arrival or three individuals arrival. We recreated the temporary pond ecosystem in 1 m2 tanks to investigate the impact of the two crayfish densities. We studied the macrophyte community composition and abundance, chlorophyll a and total suspended solids concentrations, and the diversity and functional composition of micro-crustacean and macro-invertebrate communities. We observed a reduction of macrophyte biomass in experimental crayfish mesocosms in comparison with control tanks, nearly 80 and 40% less in 3 and 1 crayfish/m2 tanks, respectively. The macrophyte community shifted, followed by a filamentous algae development, an increase of bare sediment and turbidity in crayfish tanks. The macro-invertebrate community suffered a richness loss of 28 and 22%, in 3 and 1 crayfish/m2 tanks, respectively. Functionally, macro-invertebrate diversity reduction most strongly affected the grazer, detritivore and predator trophic groups. Microcrustaceans seemed not to be affected by the introduction of the crayfish. The introduction of the crayfish greatly altered the ecosystem structure and subsequently the ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

The influence of body size on the consumption of live zooplankton (Daphnia spp.) by freshwater crayfish was examined using yabbies (Cherax destructor) ranging from 5 to 45 g. Food preference between live zooplankton and inert pellets was also assessed under experimental conditions. In experimental tanks, yabbies of four size classes (<15, 15–24.9, 25–34.9 and 35–45 g) were presented with live Daphnia. All yabbies were held in separate tanks with five animals per size class. In yabbies less than 15 g, the feeding mode on zooplankton involved rapid searching and probing with the first two pairs of walking legs. Once a prey was located, the chelae on the end of these walking legs would grasp the zooplankton and then rapidly move it towards the mouthparts. Yabbies larger than 25 g tended to use their walking legs to push the Daphnia nearer to their third maxilliped which would then force or scoop the zooplankton towards the mouthparts. A short-term feeding trial showed that there was no significant difference between size classes in regards to zooplankton consumption (P > 0.05). Capture efficiency of live Daphnia by yabbies less than 15 g was significantly lower (76%, P = 0.008) than the three larger size classes (93.6%). Yabbies less than 15 g consumed a significantly (P < 0.001) higher percentage (5.2%) of their body weight than the other size classes (1.1%, 0.8%, and 0.6%, respectively). In the presence of both live zooplankton and a pellet diet, yabbies spent significantly (P = 0.005) more time feeding on zooplankton (85%) than on inert pellets (15%). This was the first study to quantify zooplankton consumption by yabbies and the results provide insights into understanding the trophic role of freshwater crayfish in structuring zooplankton communities and the husbandry management of crayfish farming. Two fungi collected from submerged woody debris were found to represent hitherto undescribed species of the ascomycete genera Clohiesia and Paraniesslia. They are described as Clohiesia curvispora sp. nov. and Paraniesslia aquatica sp. nov. based on morphological characters. Clohiesia curvispora is characterized by immersed ascomata under a clypeus, and unitunicate, cylindrical asci containing one-celled, curved, elongate-fusiform ascospores. Paraniesslia aquatica is characterized by small, superficial, setose ascomata, and unitunicate, clavate asci containing verrucose, brown ascospores. Each species is illustrated with light micrographs and compared with similar taxa in this article.  相似文献

The predation potential of the indigenous leech Glossiphonia weberi on the snail Pomacea bridgesii, introduced in India, was evaluated in the laboratory. Snails used belonged to the size-classes ≤‰3.0, 3.1–5.0, 5.1–7.0 and 7.1–9.0 mm in shell height, using them both separately and together (mixed) in combinations. In each experiment lasting 24 h a single leech belonging to the size-classes 2.0–3.9, 4.0–5.9, 6.0–7.9, 8.0–9.9 and 10.0–11.9 mm in length was used. Except the 4.0–5.9 mm size-class, leeches were able to capture and kill P. bridgesii irrespective of latter’s size; the predation, however, was confined to snails ≤3.0 mm. The rate of predation varied with the size of the predator and the prey, and a leech was able to kill a maximum of three snails per day. In India, in nature G. weberi feeds mostly on the pulmonate snail, Lymnaea (Radix) luteola. Experimental studies, however, revealed that G. weberi prefers the snails P. bridgesii and L. (R) luteola at the same rate from amongst the many other either less or not-preferred native operculate and non-operculate snails.  相似文献
