A great concern exists about the lifetime, cost, low-temperature performance, and safety of Li-ion batteries. Na-ion batteries (NIB) are an alternative to the Li-ion batteries due to the wide availability of sodium, its low cost, and nontoxicity. Here, we examined the Na and Na+ adsorption on nanosheets of carbon (graphene), AlN, BN, and SiC to explore their potential use as an anode in NIBs. The interaction of atomic Na was found to play the main role in producing different nanosheet cell voltages. Unlike the graphene and SiC nanosheets, the lone pairs on the surface of the AlN and BN nanosheets hinder the Na adsorption and significantly increase the cell voltage. The order of magnitude of the nanosheet cell voltage as an anode in NIBs is as follows: AlN (1.49 V)?>?BN (1.46 V) >?>?C (0.69 V)?>?SiC (0.61 V). The AlN and BN nanosheets may be appropriate compounds for NIBs and their cell voltages are comparable with carbon nanotubes.  相似文献

Purpose

The demand for household batteries is considerable in the European context with just over five billion placed on the market every year. Although disposable batteries account for the largest market share in Europe, the use of rechargeable batteries is promoted as a less waste generating and a more environmentally friendly practice. A comparative life cycle assessment was therefore carried out to verify this assertion.

Methods

The study compared, with a life cycle perspective, the use of disposable alkaline batteries to that of rechargeable NiMH batteries, considering the AA and AAA sizes. The comparison focused on the factors that were expected to have an higher influence on the results: consumer choices during the purchase for disposable devices (typology of battery pack, selected brand, which affects the production country, and mode of transport of batteries for the purchasing round trip) and during the use phase for rechargeable batteries (number of charge cycles and source of the electricity used for the recharge). The waste generation indicator, 13 midpoint impact indicators on the environment and the human health, and the Cumulative energy demand indicator were calculated in support of the assessment.

Results and discussion

For waste generation, the choice of NiMH rechargeable batteries is highly convenient also with a reduced number of uses. On the contrary, for the environmental indicators and the energy consumption, the picture is less straightforward, being heavily dependent on the number of charge cycles. For the impact categories Acidification, Human toxicity (cancer effects), and Particulate matter, an “inefficient” use of the rechargeable devices (for only 20 charge cycles or less) could cause higher impacts than the employment of disposable batteries. Moreover, for the Ozone depletion, NiMH batteries are hardly environmentally better than alkaline batteries even with 150 recharges.

Conclusions and recommendations

The number of uses of rechargeable batteries plays a key role on their environmental and energy performances. When compared to disposable batteries, a minimum number of 50 charge cycles permits a robust reduction of the potential impacts for all the analyzed indicators excluding the Ozone depletion. Hence, the use of rechargeable batteries should be mostly encouraged for high consumption devices such as cameras, torches, and electronic toys.

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are expected to fulfill a crucial role in the renewable energy systems of the future. Within current regulatory frameworks, assessing the sustainability as well as the social risks for BESS should be considered. In this research we conducted a social life cycle assessment (S-LCA) of two BESS: the vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) and the lithium-ion battery (LIB). The S-LCA was conducted based on the guidelines set by UNEP/SETAC and using the PSILCA v.3 database. It was found that most social risks related to the life cycle of the batteries are associated with the raw material extraction stage, while sectors related to chemicals also entail considerable risks. Workers are the stakeholder group affected most. These results apply to supply chains located in both China and Germany, but risks were lower for similar supply chains in Germany. An LIB with a nickel manganese cobalt oxide cathode is associated with considerably larger risks compared to a LIB with lithium manganese oxide cathode. For a VRFB life cycle with an increased vanadium price, the social risks were higher than those of the VRFB supply chain with a regular vanadium price. Our paper shows that S-LCA through the PSILCA database can provide interesting insights into the potential social risks associated with a certain product's life cycle. Generalizations of the results are not recommended, and one should be careful with assessments for technologies that have not yet matured due to the cost sensitivity of the methodology.  相似文献

Industrial corn starches modified with an oxidant, acid or enzyme have been analyzed by a high-performance size-exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) technique. The procedure involves derivatization of the starch to the corresponding tricarbanilate with separation afforded by commercially available polystyrene-divinylbenzene (PS-DVB) gel columns. Separation time was under 30 min and UV detection at 235 nm allows the analysis of microgram quantities. The elution behavior of amylose and amylopectin tricarbanilates appears to depend on allowed conformational states. Amylopectin tricarbanilate (APTC) is hindered by branching and elutes much earlier than the exclusion limit of the column system according to linear polystyrene standards. Observation of an apparent hydrolysis resistant region of starch and the effects of the various hydrolytic treatments are discussed. Relative molecular weight data are presented utilizing the carbanilate of monodisperse pullulan polysaccharides as primary standards.  相似文献

The organization of amylose and amylopectin within starch granules is still not well elucidated. This study investigates the radial distribution of amylose and amylopectin in different corn starches varying in amylose content (waxy corn starch (WC), common corn starch (CC), and 50% and 70% amylose corn starches (AMC)). Corn starches were surface gelatinized by 13 M LiCl at room temperature to different extents (approximately 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%). The gelatinized surface starch and remaining granules were characterized for amylose content, amylopectin chain-length distribution, thermal properties, swelling power (SP), and water solubility index (WSI). Except for the outmost 10% layer, the amylose content in CC increased slightly with increasing surface removal. In contrast, amylose was more concentrated at the periphery than at the core for 50% and 70% AMC. The proportion of amylopectin A chains generally decreased while that of B1 chains generally increased with increasing surface removal for all corn starches. The gelatinization enthalpy usually decreased, except for 70% AMC, whereas the retrogradation enthalpy relatively remained unchanged for CC but increased for WC, 50% and 70% AMC with increasing surface removal. The SP and WSI increased with increasing surface removal for all corn starches, with WC showing a significant increase in SP after the removal of the outmost 10% layer. The results of this study indicated that there were similarities and differences in the distribution of amylose and amylopectin chains along the radial location of corn starch granules with varying amylose contents. More amylose-lipid complex and amylopectin long chains were present at the periphery than at the core for amylose-containing corn starches.  相似文献

Adsorption of water and ethanol on four starches has been studied in the temperature range of 50-90 degrees C. The results show that adsorption of water on starch-based materials is enhanced when the amount of amylopectin is highest. Adsorption of ethanol is not significantly affected by the kind of starch used. Heats of adsorption calculated from retention data are in the range from -9.3 to -13.7 kcal/g mol for water and -5.6 to -6.76 kcal/g mol for ethanol. Calculated free energies of adsorption suggest that adsorption is most spontaneous at lower temperatures as expected.  相似文献

Granular starches of nine botanical origins were exposed to low-pressure glow plasma generated in the air from either a high voltage DC supply or an AC inductor. Experiments with low energy air-plasma (10−2 Torr) and starches provided insight into some details of their surface structure. Starches were partly oxidized to carboxylic starches and partly depolymerized. Their affinity to plasma depended on their botanical origin. The structure of starch granules seemed to be a crucial factor, which determined the behaviour of starches in plasma. Lipids and/or proteins stabilized polysaccharides to plasma being preferentially decomposed.  相似文献

Inhibition of bacilli in industrial starches by nisin   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The properties of Bacillus coagulans and of other bacilli that contaminate paper and paperboard manufacturing processes were investigated under simulated industrial conditions. Nisin (0.05 to 0.125 μ2g ml−1) blocked growth of indigenous bacilli that contaminate sizing starches. B. coagulans starch isolates, B. licheniformis, B. amyloliquefaciens, and B. stearothermophilus grew at ≥250C in industrial starch and produced α2-glucosidase and cyclodextrins. The industrial isolates and reference strains of B. amyloliquefaciens, B. cereus, B. coagulans, B. flexus, B. licheniformis, B. pumilus, B. sporothermodurans, B. stearothermophilus and Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris were inhibited by ≤20.125 μ2g of nisin on agar. B. coagulans and B. stearothermophilus were similarly inhibited by ≤20.025 μ2g of nisin ml−1 and by 3 μ2g of the biocide DBNPA ml−1 in industrial starch. B. licheniformis and B. amyloliquefaciens strains were less sensitive. About 40% of nisin added to starch was retained after cooking. Fifty percent of the nisin remained active after 11 h of storage at 60C. The results show that nisin has potential as a preservative for modified industrial starches. Four different series of nucleolipids or bola-nucleolipids were synthesized or re-synthesized. Most of the compounds were studied with respect to their gelation properties toward either water or aromatic, hetero-aromatic, and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Bola-nucleolipids 6 and 7 do not gelate any solvent tested, neither as sole additive nor by adding up to 10 wt% of a 1:1 mixture. The nucleolipid 22 carrying the antiviral acyclovir as a head group proved to be a potent organogelator for aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene, but not for hetarenes, aliphatic hydrocarbons or water. The mono-tailed nucleolipid 24 exhibits excellent organogelator properties for both aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons. These were studied as a function of concentration and temperature.  相似文献

Utp9p is a nucleolar protein that is part of a subcomplex containing several U3 snoRNA-associated proteins including Utp8p, which is a protein that shuttles aminoacyl-tRNAs from the nucleolus to the nuclear tRNA export receptors Los1p and Msn5p in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Here we show that Utp9p is also an intranuclear component of the Msn5p-mediated nuclear tRNA export pathway. Depletion of Utp9p caused nuclear accumulation of mature tRNAs derived from intron-containing precursors, but not tRNAs made from intronless pre-tRNAs. Utp9p binds tRNA directly and saturably, and copurifies with Utp8p, Gsp1p, and Msn5p, but not with Los1p or aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases. Utp9p interacts directly with Utp8p, Gsp1p, and Msn5p in vitro. Furthermore, Gsp1p forms a complex with Msn5p and Utp9p in a tRNA-dependent manner. However, Utp9p does not shuttle between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. Because tRNA splicing occurs in the cytoplasm and the spliced tRNAs are retrograded back to the nucleus, we propose that Utp9p facilitates nuclear reexport of retrograded tRNAs. Moreover, the data suggest that Utp9p together with Utp8p translocate aminoacyl-tRNAs from the nucleolus to Msn5p and assist with formation of the Msn5p-tRNA-Gsp1p-GTP export complex.  相似文献

Granular potato starch and amylopectin potato starch were methylated to molar substitutions (MS) up to 0.29. Extensive alpha-amylase digestion gave mixtures of partially methylated oligomers. Precipitation of larger fragments by methanol yielded mainly alpha-limit dextrins (84-99%). Methanol precipitates were extensively digested with beta-amylase yielding alpha,beta-limit dextrins. The average substitution level of branched glucose residues in the dextrins thus obtained was determined after per deuteriomethylation by using FAB mass spectrometry, and compared with that of the linearly linked glucose residues. The present work demonstrates that methylation does not show any preference for substitution at either branched or linearly linked glucose residues, taking into account the inherently lower amount of substitution sites at branched residues. The results corroborate earlier studies wherein it was found that substituents in branched regions are distributed almost randomly. In addition, the data enable the determination of the average degree of branching of partially methylated dextrins.  相似文献

There is a compelling clinical need for adjuvants suitable for human use to enhance the efficacy of vaccines in the prevention of life-threatening infection. Candidate populations for such vaccine-adjuvant strategies include normal individuals at the two extremes of life, as well as the ever increasing population of immunocompromised individuals. In addition, adjuvants that would increase the efficiency of vaccination with such vaccines as those directed against hepatitis B andStreptococcus pneumoniae would have an even greater general use. Cytokines, as natural peptides intimately involved in the normal immune response, have great appeal as potential adjuvants. An increasing body of work utilizing recombinant versions of interleukin-1, -2, -3, -6, -12, gamma-interferon, tumor necrosis factor, and granulocyte-monocyte-colony stimulating factor has shown that cytokines do have vaccine adjuvant activity. However, in order to optimize adjuvant effect and minimize systemic toxicity, strategies in which the cytokine is fused to the antigen, or the cytokine is presented within liposomes or microspheres appear to be necessary to make this a practical approach suitable for human use. There is an increasing awareness of the role of certain nutritional components, including dietary flavonoids found in fruit, vegetables and beverages, in the maintenance of health and prevention of chronic diseases. In this regard, recent studies highlight an exciting role with respect to their potential neuroprotective actions, in particular towards deficits commonly observed with aging, such as reduced performance of cognitive, memory and learning tasks. These neurological functions, and possible mechanisms involved in controlling them, can be influenced by supplementation of single dietary flavonoids, or as part of a flavonoid-rich preparation. With this, a renewed emphasis is aimed at further understanding their modes and sites of action. Moreover a common theme among many in vitro studies examining mechanisms of neuroprotection is the failure to include biologically relevant metabolites of the flavonoids known to enter the circulation, and thus most likely to be bioavailable to cells and tissues. This oversight will ultimately influence the mechanisms of action proposed to explain the neuroprotection observed in animals and human studies. As such, emerging findings suggest a variety of potential mechanisms of action of flavonoids and their bioavailable metabolites in cytoprotection against oxidative stress, which may be independent of conventional antioxidant reducing activities. Such mechanisms might involve their interaction with cell signalling cascades, their influence on gene expression and the down regulation of pathways leading to cell death.  相似文献

The general oxidation mechanism by hypochlorite on starch has been well studied, but the information on the distribution of the oxidation sites within starch granules is limited. This study investigated the locations where the oxidation occurred within corn starch granules varying in amylose content, including waxy corn starch (WC), common corn starch (CC), and 50% and 70% high-amylose corn starch (AMC). Oxidized corn starches were surface gelatinized by 13 M LiCl at room temperature to different extents (approximately 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%). The surface-gelatinized remaining granules were separated and studied for structural characteristics including carboxyl content, amylose content, amylopectin chain-length distribution, thermal properties, and swelling properties. Oxidation occurred mostly at the amorphous lamellae. More carboxyl groups were found at the periphery than at the core of starch granules, which was more pronounced in oxidized 70% AMC. More amylose depolymerization from oxidation occurred at the periphery of CC. For WC and CC, amylopectin long chains (>DP 36) were more prone to depolymerization by oxidation. The gelatinization properties as measured by differential scanning calorimetry also supported the changes in amylopectin fine structure from oxidation. Oxidized starches swelled to a greater extent than their unmodified counterparts at all levels of surface removal. This study demonstrates that the locations of oxidation and physicochemical properties of oxidized starches are affected by the molecular arrangement within starch granules.  相似文献
