Populations of the colonial hydroid Obelia geniculata in the White Sea reproduce asexually by frustule formation. Young medusae appear in the plankton during July and August. The number of medusae rarely exceeds 36 per m3, and the average number varies every year from 0.4 to 10 per m3. The size of medusae is smaller than reported from other regions. The umbrella of the largest recorded medusa was only 0.57 mm in diameter and the specimen had just 35 tentacles. Only a few mature medusae were found during the study. The colonies in the White Sea are epiphytic and grow only on laminarian thalli. At the beginning of July there are no colonies on thalli from the upper subtidal zone. By the end of August, colonies of O.␣geniculata had increased in density to 30 per m2. Hydroid recruitment was attributed to active frustule production by colonies living below that zone. The frustules detach from the stems of the hydroids and are found in plankton. Production of frustules on branches occurs continuously during colony growth until water temperatures climb above 0 °C. We found that water temperature in this Arctic environment is generally too low for medusa maturation and planula development in the species. Propagation by frustule formation is the principal means of reproduction in Obelia geniculata within the White Sea, and this phenomenon accounts for the species being a dominant epiphyte on laminarian thalli there.  相似文献

Aulacoseira skvortzowii sp. nov. is a diatom taxon present in modern plankton assemblages and sedimentary deposits from Lake Baikal, Russia. It has been previously reported as A. islandica (O. Müll.) Simonsen, A. islandica ssp. helvetica (O. Müll.) Simonsen, a sporangial frustule of A. baicalensis (K. Meyer) Simonsen, and Aulacoseira “spore”. However, its microstructure, ecology, and ability to form true resting spores provide ample criteria to describe this diatom as Aulacoseira skvortzowii sp. nov.  相似文献

Stephanodscus invisitatus Hohn and Hellerman, studied by means of light, transmission, and scanning electron microscopy, shows a range of frustule diameters from 6.4 to 13.3 μ. Variation in valve ornamentation can be correlated with specimen diameter. The striae number ranges from 16 to 20 in 10 μ. Various processes difficult to observe by light microscopy alone are described which arise from the inside and outside of the frustules. 2 2 Note added in proof . The authors endorse the terminology of G. R. Hasle (1972, Beih. Nova Hedw., 39 :55–78.) in which the designation strutted tubulus has been employed for the structure referred herein as tube or tube-like process.

The cell wall (frustule) of the freshwater diatom Pinnularia viridis (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg is composed of an assembly of highly silicified components and associated organic layers. We used atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate the nanostructure and relationship between the outermost surface organics and the siliceous frustule components of live diatoms under natural hydrated conditions. Contact mode AFM imaging revealed that the walls were coated in a thick mucilaginous material that was interrupted only in the vicinity of the raphe fissure. Analysis of this mucilage by force mode AFM demonstrated it to be a nonadhesive, soft, and compressible material. Application of greater force to the sample during repeated scanning enabled the mucilage to be swept from the hard underlying siliceous components and piled into columns on either side of the scan area by the scanning action of the tip. The mucilage columns remained intact for several hours without dissolving or settling back onto the cleaned valve surface, thereby revealing a cohesiveness that suggested a degree of cross-linking. The hard silicified surfaces of the diatom frustule appeared to be relatively smooth when living cells were imaged by AFM or when field-emission SEM was used to image chemically cleaned walls. AFM analysis of P. viridis frustules cleaved in cross-section revealed the nanostructure of the valve silica to be composed of a conglomerate of packed silica spheres that were 44.8 ± 0.7 nm in diameter. The silica spheres that comprised the girdle band biosilica were 40.3 ± 0.8 nm in diameter. Analysis of another heavily silicified diatom, Hantzschia amphioxys (Ehrenberg) Grunow, showed that the valve biosilica was composed of packed silica spheres that were 37.1 ± 1.4 nm and that silica particles from the girdle bands were 38.1 ± 0.5 nm. These results showed little variation in the size range of the silica particles within a particular frustule component (valve or girdle band), but there may be differences in particle size between these components within a diatom frustule and significant differences are found between species.  相似文献

The frustule of Actinocyclus subtilis (Greg.) Ralfs has been examined in detail with light and electron microscopy. The complex valve structure can only he appreciated fully by means of thin-sections. The loculate areola is closed to the inside by a basket of organic material, which is supported by a system of radiating, lightly silicified ribs. The basket is easily destroyed by acid cleaning, thus leaving an open hole (foramen). The loculus is connected to the outside by a system of interconnecting channels, whose external openings are too small to be resolved by the SEM. Between the locules of the valve face is a complex system of bullulae. The labiate processes are slightly tilted from the vertical axis vis à vis the valve mantle. Fibrillar material and mucilage are present within each labiate process, observations not reported previously. Histochemistry indicates that acid mucopolysaccharides are present within the lumen of the labiate process. We propose that the secretion of mucilage is related to the rotational, but directed movement noted in this centric diatom. The pseudonodulus is a solid silica plate subtended on the inside by a disc of organic material external to the cytoplasm. The relationship between Actinocyclus, Hemidiscus, Roperia, Charcotia and Azpeitia is discussed based on these new findings of valve morphology. Also the relationship between the families Hemidiscaceae and Coscinodiscaceae is discussed.  相似文献

Diatoms are single‐celled microalgae that possess a nanostructured, porous biosilica shell called a frustule. This study characterized the micro‐photoluminescence (μ‐PL) emission of single living cells of the photosynthetic marine diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana in response to UV laser irradiation at 325 nm using a confocal Raman microscope. The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum had two primary peaks, one centered at 500–510 nm, which was attributed to the frustule biosilica, and a second peak at 680 nm, which was attributed to auto‐fluorescence of photosynthetic pigments. The portion of the μ‐PL emission spectrum associated with biosilica frustule in the single living diatom cell was similar to that from single biosilica frustules isolated from these diatom cells. The PL emission by the biosilica frustule in the living cell emerged only after cells were cultivated to silicon depletion. The discovery of the discovery of PL emission by the frustule biosilica within a single living diatom itself, not just its isolated frustule, opens up future possibilities for living biosensor applications, where the interaction of diatom cells with other molecules can be probed by μ‐PL spectroscopy. On the basis of results of stratigraphic and comparative morphological studies on the diatom frustule, the Surirellaceae is generally assumed to be the endpoint of the evolution of the Pennales. The present study shows that a line of development, based on frustule construction and which parallels the search for optimum design of comparable elements in engineering, can be traced from the Naviculaceae to the Surirellaceae. In both cases lightweight construction is achieved through economy of material and energy expenditure. This leads to structural stability and in the case of the diatom valve, a larger area for metabolic exchange. From the functional-morphological point of view, three construction principles can be distinguished in the genus Surirella: 1. valves with pennate costal framework, raphe keels and fibulae (Surirella gemma group); 2. frustules where all supporting elements are in the form of corrugations, with raphe keel and fibulae (Pinnatae, Fastuosae, Surirella striatula group); and 3. as in 2, but with true alae with alar canals (Robustae) instead of keels with fibulae.  相似文献

The diatom assemblage associated with the Antarctic sponge Mycale acerata was studied through an analysis of the diatom frustule and pigment concentrations in both the sponge ectosome and choanosome. Sponges were sampled weekly from November 2001 to February 2002 at Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica, at a depth of 25–35 m. The most abundant diatoms were Porannulus contentus, Fragilariopsis curta, Thalassiosira cf. gracilis, T. perpusilla and Plagiotropis sp. High abundances of P. contentus were found on the sponge ectosome up to the beginning of November, before the ice melted, while later frustules were incorporated inside, indicating that P. contentus lives epibiontically on M. acerata and represents a potential food source for the sponge. The presence of other diatom species was mainly related to the summer phytoplankton bloom. The sponge incorporates diatoms from the water column and utilises them as a food source, accumulating frustules inside the choanosome. The lack of planktonic diatom frustules at the beginning of the summer indicates that they are expelled or dissolved during the cold season.  相似文献

This paper describes a new diatom species, Aulacoseira calypsi Tremarin, Torgan & Ludwig, from specimens in plankton samples from Água Preta lake. This Amazonian lake is a shallow mesotrophic environment situated in northern Brazil. The species is characterized by long filaments united by spatulate linking spines, obovate to conic separation spines, a valve surface variably ornamented, straight striae on the mantle, a narrow ringleist, and one row of sessile rimoportulae near the ringleist. Aulacoseira calypsi's morphometric features are compared with the following similar species: Aulacoseira nygaardii (Camburn) Camburn & Charles, Aulacoseira lacustris (Grunow) Krammer, Aulacoseira coroniformis Pearce & Cremer, Aulacoseira occulta Siver & Hamilton, Aulacoseira lancea Siver & Hamilton, Aulacoseira gessneri (Hustedt) Simonsen, and Aulacoseira islandica (Müller) Simonsen. The species shares similarities as to frustule size, striation pattern, and narrowness of ringleist; but differs in the morphology of separation and linking spines, and the number and position of the rimoportulae.  相似文献

The structure of the frustule of auxospores, resting spores and vegetative cells of Chaetoceros muelleri Lemm. are described with LM and SEM. Vegetative frustules are relatively small and lightly silicified, are not united into filaments, and appear unornamented under LM and SEM. The setae are circular to subcircular in transverse section with spines and puncta arranged in a spiral pattern. The resting spore and auxospore frustules are more silicified than the vegetative frustules and appear unornamented under LM and SEM. The auxospores of C. muelleri were previously unknown.  相似文献

Guillet, A. 1979. Aspects of the foraging behaviour of the Shoebill. Ostrich 50:252-255.

The foraging behaviour of the Shoebill Balaeniceps rex. in relation to the bird's habitat and morphology, is described. The Shoebill preys on fish in shallow water, and uses platforms of floating vegetation as fishing sites. The Shoebill's behaviour in stalking, detecting and capturing prey is compared with foraging techniques used by herons and storks. The Shoebill uses a peculiar and complicated technique, called “collapsing”, for capturing prey.  相似文献

Although diatom extracellular matricies are usually thought of exclusively in terms of the beautiful, architecturally complex silicious frustule, polymers exuded through the frustule are critical mediators of interactions with the external environment. In several species, complex proteoglycans appear to be the primary components involved in adhesion and motility. When viewed with high‐resolution cryo‐scanning electron microscopy methods, the ubiquity and pervasiveness of these polymers was revealed in both freshwater and marine taxa. Monoclonal antibody mapping of carbohydrate epitopes characterized by NMR, methylation and monosaccharide analysis and correlated with structural observations by EM revealed an organizational pattern far more complex than previously proposed. Modeling assembly of extracellular “stalks” in the marine biofouling diatom Achnanthes longipes involves intracellular sequestering of multiple components, deposition at the protoplasmic membrane/diatotepum interface, transport through the multilayered diatotepum and holes in the silica, extrusion from the frustule, and assembly into a very complex multi‐laminate biocomposite structure. The mechanism of extracellular polymer participation in motility is complex in a different way, as some current models of raphe associated motility involve cytoskeletal interactions and molecular motors.  相似文献

The taxonomy, distribution, and ecology of the diatom genus Tabellaria Ehr. from a portion of the northcentral United States were studied from collections made from August 1968 to October 1971. Using the transmission electron microscope with carbon replicas of the frustule surfaces, taxonomically significant characters were identified and related to those visible with the light microscope, four morphologically distinguishable taxa were recognized. The frustular morphology of T. fenestrata (Lyngbye) kütz. em. Knudson var. fenestrata was confirmed by both light and electron microscopy. T. flocculosa (Roth) Kütz. var. flocculosa is composed of 3 morphologically distinguishable strains. One of which is sufficiently different from the nominate variety to be described as T. flocculosa var. linearis var. nov. Also, a planktonic ecotype of one of the strains was identified.  相似文献

Light and electron microscopy were used to investigate the complex structure of the frustule of Paralia sulcata (Ehrenb.) Cleve. Rimoportulae are reported for the first time in this diatom and two types of linking processes are described. The ease with which the cingulum is lost is explained with regard to its attachment to the valve. Two kinds of heterovalvy were observed and the taxonomic significance of one of these is discussed. The validity of Heiberg's genus Paralia is confirmed and a type slide of the species is designated.  相似文献

Ethmodiscus spp. is an important contributor to oceanic tropical-ooze sediments and thus might be an important transport vehicle of carbon from the ocean surface to sediments. The knowledge of its cell cycle and growth rate, which is still lacking, is necessary to evaluate the importance of Ethmodiscus in nutrient cycling and to solve the discrepancy between its high sedimentary abundance and rarity in the plankton. We used immunofluorescence of a cell cycle protein, prolqerating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), and DNA-specific staining to study the progression of the cell cycle and roughly estimate the growth rate for E. rex (Rattray) Wiseman and Hendey in the southwestern North Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea in June 1994 and January 1995. During the cell division cycle, the chloroplasts appeared to synthesize DNA before the nucleus (S phase). Following the S phase, the nucleus moved from one end of the cell toward the center underneath the midline of the girdle band (G2 phase) where it divided (M phase). During a very brief period, the parent cell split and moved apart from the girdle midline, and two new valves were produced (late M phase). The two daughter nuclei apparently remained attached at the joint of the two newly produced valves, where they appeared to be responsible for coordinating the symmetrical formation of the new valves. The morphologically complete daughter cells remained joined for a short period of time before separating into solitary cells whose nucleus was located at one end of the cell. Derived from the phase fraction curves, the duration of the cell cycle phases decreased in the order from G1, S, G2, to M. A conservative estimate of the growth rate in the study area obtained by using PCNA immunostaining was 0.39–0.46 d?1 in June and 0.15 d?1 in January. The validity and implication of the growth rate estimates are discussed.  相似文献

The marine centric diatom Biddulphia levis produced uniflagellate fusiform male gametes completely within the parent cell frustule. These gametes lacked both a central pair of microtubules in the flagellar axoneme and chloroplasts but did contain a cone of microtubules which passed posteriorly from the base of the kinetosome along the nuclear envelope. The gametes were released through a specialized pore in the girdle band leaving behind a cytoplasmic mass which contained chloroplasts and other cytoplasmic components. Tubules which resembled the flimmer hairs on the gamete flagellum occurred in cisternae of the cytoplasmic reticulum in the residual cytoplasm and in the nuclear envelope of the gametes. Gametogenesis in B. levis is compared with similar processes in other centric diatoms.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that silicification occurs under acid conditions in the silicon deposition vesicle (SDV), the acidity of the SDV of the pennate diatoms Navicula pelliculosa (Brébisson et Kützing) Hilse, N. salinarum (Grunow) Hustedt, and Nitzschia sigma (Kützing) Smith was determined during development of new frustule valves. Cells were incubated with the weak base 3-(2,4-dinitroanilino)-3′-amino-N-methylpropylamine (DAMP) followed by immunocytochemical localization in whole cells and on ultrathin sections. After resupplying silicate to cells synchronized by silicon depletion, the uptake of this nutrient from the medium was the same with or without DAMP; new valves developed without morphological aberrations that could conceivably have been caused by the probe. DAMP was found in cellular compartments known to be acidic, such as vacuoles active as lysosomes, the lumen of thylakoids, and microbodies. In the nucleus and mitochondria, which are circumneutral and basic compartments, the probe did not appear. Besides its presence in acidic compartments, DAMP was specifically accumulated within the SDV during formation of new valves; during the process of valve maturation, the SDV seemed to become increasingly acidic. In control experiments using the ionophores chloroquine, valinomycin, and nigericin, the compartmental location of DAMP was clearly disturbed, resulting in a random intracellular distribution. Accumulation of the fluorescent probe rhodamine 123, which can be translocated over membranes by a reducing potential, confirmed that the SDV can translocate weak bases. The results with DAMP suggest that the pH of the SDV is important in the silicification of diatoms: It facilitates a fast nucleation and aggregation of silica particles, thus increasing the rate of formation of the mature frustules. In addition, the acidic environment might protect the newly formed valves against dissolution before completion and coverage by the organic casing prior to their secretion.  相似文献

The influence of different culture systems on the amount of plankton consumed by fingerlings of three carp species (Labeo rohita, Catla catla and Cirrhinus mrigala) was examined in outdoor culture tanks during a 90 day growing period. The fish were raised under two basically different feeding conditions: (a) fed with allochthonous live plankton; (b) fed with plankton grown autochthonously in the fish growing tanks fertilized with manures. Both feeding regimes were compared with control groups. It was found that the plankton intake for carp held in the live food system was significantly higher than with the manured and control systems. Related to maximum intake, maximum abundance of plankton in the live food system was a consequence of improved water quality expressed in terms of lower values of BOD and COD and higher values of DO and pH; this was conducive to fast reproduction of some of the zooplankton which constituted the major food items for the test carp, as well as to the regular exogenous introduction of live plankton. The ingestion of plankton was found to be related to carp body weight raised to the power b. The exponent b ranged from 0.29 to 0.93 during the 90-day growing period.  相似文献
