Four species of Amansia Lamouroux were initially found in Natal. More Complete studies on these species revealed a new genus, Melanamansia, Which is described on the basis of presence of two dorsal pseudopericentral cells in two new species from Natal (M. seagriefii sp. nov. & M. fimbrifolia sp. nov.) in addition to other structural characters and features of pigmentation and reproduction. Pseudopericentral cells are not present in the type species of Amansia, A. multifida Lamouroux. The other two species of Amansia occurring in Natal, A. glomerata C. Agardh & A. loriformis sp. nov., have characters similar to the type species. Comparison of species from other regions of the world has shown that eight additional species, previously assigned to Amansia, belong to the new genus.  相似文献

The vaquita ( Phocoena sinus ) manus was examined in 16 individuals. The carpus has a proximal row of three bones and a cartilaginous accessory carpal element distocaudal to the ulna. Five metacarpal bones are present. A process in distocaudal aspect of Metacarpal III and an additional digital ray were present in all individuals examined. The number of phalanges in the additional digital ray varied among individuals and, sometimes, between the left and the right flipper of the same individual. The suggested phalangeal formula is I-1, II-7-8, III-6-7, IV-0-3, V-3-4, VI-1. The presence of this particular form of polydactyly may be the result of genetic drift in the small vaquita population.  相似文献

Study of plant microfossils and additional macrofossils collected from sediments in the vicinity of Sucker Creek along the Oregon-Idaho boundary has provided additional data on the composition of this fossil flora. A total of seven taxa new to the flora have been recognized. These include colonies of Botryococcus; pollen of Podocarpus, Pachysandra, and the Onagraceae; and leaves of Cephalotaxus californica and Vaccinium sophoroides. The occurrence of Podocarpus in this mid-Miocene flora is particularly significant in view of the limited number of records of this genus in the Tertiary of North America. In addition to these new records, the presence of three additional taxa—Castanea, Nyssa, and Ilex—previously recognized on the basis of leaf remains, is further substantiated by the occurrence of fossil pollen in the sediments.  相似文献

Twitch and slow muscle fibers, identified morphologically in the garter snake, have been examined in the electron microscope. The transverse tubular system and the sarcoplasmic reticulum are separate entities distinct from each other. In twitch fibers, the tubular system and the dilated sacs of the sarcoplasmic reticulum form triads at the level of junction of A and I bands. In the slow fibers, the sarcoplasmic reticulum is severely depleted in amount and the transverse tubular system is completely absent. The junctional folds of the postsynaptic membrane of the muscle fiber under an "en grappe" ending of a slow fiber are not so frequent or regular in occurrence or so wide or so long as under the "en plaque" ending of a twitch fiber. Some physiological implications of these differences in fine structure of twitch and slow fibers are discussed. The absence of the transverse tubular system and reduction in amount of sarcoplasmic reticulum, along with the consequent disposition of the fibrils, the occurrence of multiple nerve terminals, and the degree of complexity of the post junctional folds of the sarcolemma appear to be the morphological basis for the physiological reaction of slow muscle fibers.  相似文献

Most of the exploited fish stocks in the North Sea are also used as a food supply by a number of seal species; the same is true for some fish and invertebrate stocks in the Antarctic—although the fisheries there are, at present, much smaller than those in the North Sea. The information needed for a critical assessment of such interactions is reviewed. Using existing techniques it is possible to estimate the quantity and size-classes of each fish or invertebrate species consumed by seals and to compare this with the commercial catch. If fishing mortality is known, these estimates can be used to calculate the level of mortality imposed by the seals. However, a realistic evaluation requires information on the distribution and movements of the fish, the seals' feeding effort, and the fisheries effort in time and space. At present it is difficult or impossible to obtain this information, but recent technological developments in telemetry equipment will soon make it feasible. To assess the economic effects of changes in seal numbers on the fishery, or the ecological effects of changes in fisheries effort on seal populations, requires additional information on the responses of the fishery and the seals to changes in fish abundance, and of the commercial market to changes in the supply of fish.  相似文献

All of the roots of Selaginella selaginoides are attached laterally to the base of the shoot, which has monopolar growth as is characteristic of Selaginella. The first three roots are produced by meristematic activity in the cortex of the hypocotyl as in several other species of Selaginella. The fourth root is produced in the same way as the first three, except that not all of the cortical cells which become meristematic mature into root tissue. Some of the meristematic tissue remains undifferentiated and continues to produce additional roots. Potentially an unlimited number of roots could be produced, but no plant was found to have more than eight. There is some secondary growth in the cortex of the basal swelling on the hypocotyl, but no secondary vascular tissue is produced and no cambium of any sort is ever organized. On the basis of comparisons with other living species of Selaginella. the centralized root system of S. selaginoides is interpreted as having been modified from a noncentralized type of root system by the persistence of the juvenile mode of root production.  相似文献

Abstract: The ichnotaxonomy and stratigraphic, geographic and environmental distribution of fish (Undichna) and amphibian (Lunichnium) swimming traces are reviewed. The ichnospecies of Undichna consist of various combinations of sinusoidal waves of differing complexity. Some of the more complex ichnospecies are made up of elements of the simpler forms, and morphological subset relationships between them are presented. Such subset series represent potential taphoseries relationships (i.e. preservational variants that reflect, for example, undertrails), or series of minor behavioural variations. Such a system can be used to highlight that different ichnospecies occurring at a locality may be taphonomic or minor behavioural variants of each other. Caution should, therefore, be exercised before erecting new ichnospecies on the basis of limited material if its morphology is a subset of an existing ichnospecies. However, the naming of such simpler ichnospecies is valid if they represent a recurrent morphology, and it is valid to erect new ichnospecies whose morphology is not a subset of an existing ichnospecies. Specimens that demonstrate intergradation between ichnotaxa can be used to justify their synonomy. Ichnotaxonomic revisions reduce the number of ichnospecies in Undichna from 14 to nine. U. radnicensis, a highly variable ichnospecies, is synonymized with U. britannica on the basis of material from China that demonstrates they can intergrade. U. prava is a partial U. tricosta, which falls within the minimum diagnosis of U. simplicitas. U. gosiutensis is regarded as a subjective junior synonym of U. quina. U. westerbergensis, originally attributed to a ‘crossopterygian’ fish performing a tetrapod‐like gait, is reassigned as a distinct ichnospecies within Lunichnium because it demonstrates the same morphology, representing similar behaviour, albeit by a different producer. L. anceps and L. gracile are synonymized with L. rotterodium. New specimens of U. bina and L. rotterodium are also described from the Lower Permian Robledo Mountains Formation of southern New Mexico, USA.  相似文献

Abstract: The genus Biatora is still undercollected in many parts of its distributional range. On the basis of recent collections made by the authors and additional herbarium material not studied previously, more detailed statements on the ecology, distribution and conservational status of Biatora species in Central Europe are possible. Distribution maps are provided for B. fallax , B. mendax , B. ocelliformis , B. rufidula , B. sphaeroidiza , and B. vernalis . Biatora species are almost exclusively non-saxicolous and, in general, prefer humid habitats. Many species are chionophilous and extremely shade-tolerant. Three main distributional patterns can be observed: (sub-)arctic-alpine species, sub-oceanic-montane species, and species of montane coniferous or mixed coniferous forests. Biatora efflorescens , B. flavopunctata and B. subduplex are relatively frequent species and are not threatened. Biatora rufidula and B. vacciniicola must be regarded as extinct in Central Europe. The following species are reported for the first time from the respective countries: B. chrysantha from Romania, B. efflorescens from Romania and Ukraine, B. fallax from Austria and Ukraine,B. mendax from the Czech Republic, B. ocelliformis from Romania, and B. sphaeroidiza from Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Romania.  相似文献

Atropinesterase was found to exist in approximately one out of every four rabbits, and no relation could be observed between the incidence of the enzyme and season, sex, color, age, or weight. The occurrence of the enzyme was also shown to be unrelated to that of cholinesterase. The distribution of atropinesterase in the blood and organs of rabbits was studied; the animals devoid of the enzyme in their blood contained no demonstrable activity in any of the organ extracts tested. The presence of atropinesterase in frog liver, and its absence from the serum, has been confirmed. Hydrolysis of homatropine, but not atropine, by guinea pig liver was observed, while the serum was without action on either of the compounds. On this basis the possibility arises that guinea pig liver contains a homatropinesterase enzyme separate from atropinesterase. It was shown that lack of atropinesterase activity in certain rabbits is not likely to be due to the presence of a naturally occurring inhibitor. It has been demonstrated that contrary to previous indications neither fresh egg white nor yolk possess atropinesterase activity. The specificity of tropinesterases was investigated and evidence was presented for the possible existence of two distinct enzymes, cocainesterase and tropacocainesterase.  相似文献

—Putrescine, spermidine, spermine, RNA, DNA and protein concentrations were determined in 14 parts of the rat nervous system. If the concentrations are expressed in DNA units, putrescine and spermidine concentrations change concomitantly in the different brain parts, with the exception of hypothalamus, where relatively higher putrescine than spermidine concentrations are observed. The constancy of putrescine/spermidine ratios indicates the value of putrescine concentration as an index of spermidine biosynthesis. Spermidine correlates with RNA, except in medulla, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. It is assumed that the relative excess of spermidine in these structures indicates an additional functional role. Spermine/DNA ratios are remarkably constant in the diencephalic and telencephalic regions; they are also nearly constant, but significantly lower in midbrain, medulla, spinal cord and cerebellum. This observation gives additional support for the preferential interrelation of spermidine with RNA and spermine with DNA; i.e. for different functional roles of these two narrowly related polycations.  相似文献

This paper describes a preliminary study of the feeding behaviour of the territorial Blue Duck. The bird is unusual in possessing lateral bill flaps and, in a number of head and skull characters, differs from a typical dabbling duck. Herbst's corpuscles are absent from the outer 60% of the width of the flaps and this is thought to indicate that any tactile function is subsidiary. It is tentatively suggested that an additional function is protective, and that the flaps cushion the jaw edges during vigorous food searching beneath stones on rocky stream bottoms. Food taken in summer was analysed from remains in droppings and from gut contents and was found to consist of aquatic insects, principally case-living and free-living caddis larvae, and algae. Some short-term variation in the diet was noted. It is suggested, also tentatively, that the decline in Blue Duck numbers since the 19th century has been associated with the introduction of trout which are potentially direct food competitors. Further ecological research on this unique species is required.  相似文献

从1974年8月至1985年6月在黄渤海沿岸9个港湾进行了污损生物挂板实验,同时调查了船只、码头、浮标等水下设施的污损生物,共获得992号苔藓虫标本。经鉴定有35种,分别属于3目17科,它们大部分是我国沿岸水域的广分布种,有些是印度—西太平洋暖水种。在长江口外吕泗洋水文平台发现4种,连云港17种,烟台港18种,蓬莱港12种,渤海海峡的砣矶岛8种,塘沽新港14种,族顺港15种,丹东港是鸭绿江下游河港,未发现苔藓虫。 黄渤海苔藓虫主要附着季节6—10月,高峰期7、8、9三个月。 文章最后论述了苔藓虫作为污损生物主要成员之一在污损生物中的意义。  相似文献

Abstract— Inspection of trees of varying lengths (by the option ALL TREES, which produces a histogram for tree lengths in PAUP 3.0) has been used to evaluate cladistic data and results. For example, a result may be judged more effective if the groups supported in the most parsimonious tree are preserved in trees that require increasingly greater amounts of homoplasy. Evaluation of grouping purely on the basis of this stability criterion ignores other highly relevant aspects of cladistic results. In particular, some data sets may incorporate additional taxa that introduce homoplasy to the shortest tree in a manner that concurrently allows for a revised understanding of character optimization patterns. These taxa may render groups preserved in the shortest tree less stable, but this result is not necessarily deficient if the homoplasy underlying such instability reveals possible character state changes for the given taxa irretrievable from the original matrix. The hypothetical example described here is relevant to so called "stem", "basal" or "plesiomorphic sister" taxa that are commonly considered in studies of both fossil and extant taxa.  相似文献

Gas chromatographic analyses of the nut oils of 155 samples, representing 15 taxa of Carya, confirm the basic uniformity of fatty-acid composition within the walnut family. All taxa contain small amounts of the saturated fatty acids—palmitic and stearic—and variable amounts of the unsaturated oleic and linoleic acids, and at least trace amounts of linolenic. Quantitative differences in the relative amounts of the five fatty acids support the morphologic recognition of two sections within the genus. Members of the section Carya are characterized by higher linoleic and lower oleic acid percentages than are those of section Apocarya. It is also true, however, that tetraploids of section Carya tend to have higher linoleic and lower oleic acid percentages than diploids within the same section. Numerical analyses of the oil data reveal close similarities between certain members of the more “primitive” section Apocarya and the diploid members of section Carya. The highly heterogeneous assemblage within section Apocarya could be split into three groups on the basis of oil data. It is equally obvious, however, that the American taxa of the genus Carya have had a long and reticulate phylogeny and that recognition of additional categories above the species level would not result in natural assemblages.  相似文献

We have examined the motile cell ultrastructural features of several green algal species having filamentous or foliose thallus morphology and probable affinities with the Ulvophyceae, and compared them with the structural, reproductive, and life history features known for these taxa. We separate the algae studied into the orders Ulotrichales and Ulvales on the basis of consistent variations in terminal cap and proximal sheath structure that correlate well with life history patterns and certain features of sporangial and gametangial structure and development. Body scales are present only in certain members of the Ulotrichales. Both orders encompass a variety of thallus forms, demonstrating parallel evolution of thallus morphology. Flagellar apparatus features common to all the motile cells examined include 180° rotational symmetry, counterclockwise absolute orientation, the positioning of the basal bodies in an apical papilla, and the presence of one or more sets of striated bands associated with the X rootlets. Additional features that are usually present include basal body overlap and orientation roughly perpendicular to the long axis of the cell during forward swimming, striated distal fibers, and a single, striated, microtuble-associated component underlying each two-membered rootlet. These similarities indicate to us that the two groups are closely related members of the Ulvophyceae. We suggest that the Ulotrichales is the most primitive ulvophyceous assemblage known, but that all groups studied have advanced features relative to those supposed to have been present in the ancestral members of the Ulvophyceae.  相似文献
