Wild bird feeding often results in high densities of birds, potentially facilitating transmission of disease. Wild birds are major reservoirs of many zoonotic diseases, and although a number of avian disease outbreaks have been linked to bird feeders, urban bird‐feeding and its role in disease systems remains poorly studied. We examined the impacts of typical supplementary feeding practices on the health status of feeder‐visiting birds at experimental feeding stations in an urban area of New Zealand. Over an 18‐month period, we screened birds captured at feeding and non‐feeding properties for three pathogens and four groups of parasites to determine whether feeding altered disease dynamics. We also assessed body condition. All pathogens and parasites were detected in at least one garden bird species. Feeding stations tested positive for Salmonella enterica Typhimurium on ~7% of occasions, confirming that structures used in feeding are a potential transmission pathway. Feeding influenced some parasite infection parameters; these effects varied among host species. In silvereyes Zosterops lateralis, helminth prevalence and abundance were lower at feeding properties compared to non‐feeding properties. In contrast, Eurasian blackbirds Turdus merula at feeding properties had a higher abundance of helminths. House sparrows Passer domesticus at feeding properties had a higher abundance of feather lice. Furthermore, our feeding regime significantly affected body condition in house sparrow and silvereye, though no associations between parasite parameters and body condition indices were found. Our results demonstrate that feeding practices can have varied effects on avian health, including no observable effects for some disease agents in some host species. Disease risks are present, however, thus understanding and reducing these risks should be a key goal for all stakeholders to protect birds that use feeders and other wildlife.  相似文献

When neuropeptide Y (NPY) is administered centrally, meal-anticipatory responses are elicited. If an increase of endogenous NPY is a signal that heralds an imminent large caloric load, timed daily NPY injections may be expected to condition meal-anticipatory responses that facilitate ingestion. Rats received 4-h access to food beginning in the morning and then timed (1600 h), daily third-ventricular injections of NPY or saline for 7 days. On test day (day 8), animals received the conditioning drug (NPY or saline) or the opposite drug. Food was available immediately after injection on test day, and intake was measured. Rats conditioned with NPY and then given saline ate significantly more than rats conditioned with saline and then given saline; they ate the same amount as rats given NPY. Although they ate more, rats trained with NPY did not have changed plasma glucose, insulin, or ghrelin. These data suggest that NPY plays a role in mediating conditionable food-anticipatory responses that help to cope with the effects of large caloric loads.  相似文献

A systems approach to the analysis of the process of fermentation of erythromycin is demonstrated. On the basis of biochemical and bioengineering data obtained in hydrodynamic tests and pilot plant fermentations of erythromycin a mathematical model for optimal technological parameters of growth of Streptomyces erythreus and product formation was postulated. The optimal regime was simulated and subsequently verified. The production of erythromycin increased to 112 %. Rice production is known to be severely affected by virus transmitting rice pests, brown planthopper (BPH) and green leafhopper (GLH) of the order hemiptera, feeding by phloem abstraction. ASAL, a novel lectin from leaves of garlic (Allium sativum) was previously demonstrated to be toxic towards hemipteran pests when administered in artificial diet as well as in ASAL expressing transgenic plants. In this report ASAL was targeted under the control of phloem-specific Agrobacterium rolC and rice sucrose synthase-1 (RSs1) promoters at the insect feeding site into popular rice cultivar, susceptible to hemipteran pests. PCR, Southern blot and C-PRINS analyses of transgenic plants have confirmed stable T-DNA integration and the transgenes were co-segregated among self-fertilized progenies. The T0 and T1 plants, harbouring single copy of intact T-DNA expression cassette, exhibit stable expression of ASAL in northern and western blot analyses. ELISA showed that the level of expressed ASAL was as high as 1.01% of total soluble protein. Immunohistofluorescence localization of ASAL depicted the expected expression patterns regulated by each promoter type. In-planta bioassay studies revealed that transgenic ASAL adversely affect survival, growth and population of BPH and GLH. GLH resistant T1 plants were further evaluated for the incidence of tungro disease, caused by co-infection of GLH vectored Rice tungro bacilliform virus (RTBV) and Rice tungro spherical virus (RTSV), which appeared to be dramatically reduced. The result presented here is the first report of such GLH mediated resistance to infection by RTBV/RTSV in ASAL expressing transgenic rice plant.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available to authorised users in the online version of this article at .  相似文献

In this paper a deterministic differential equation system is proposed to model the population dynamics of a biological community in which two species on the same trophic level compete for a common food, taken to be in limited supply. Food limitation is assumed to be the only inhibition of the growth of the populations and food quantity is assumed to be only affected by consumption. The model is thus designed to mimic a closed experimental situation rather than a natural community.Analytical properties of the solution of the differential equation system are developed and corresponding biological interpretations suggested.Cited laboratory data on the experimental batch community consisting of the marine ciliates Euplotes vannus and Uronema marinum feeding on bacteria motivated the model and supported its analytic properties.  相似文献

Peripheral administration of butorphanol tartrate markedly enhanced feeding from 0800 to 1400 hours when compared with vehicle controls. Butorphanol tartrate feeding was not antagonized by doses of naloxone as high as 10 mg/kg. These data support the concept that the kappa or sigma opiate receptors are involved in feeding behavior. It is well recognized that the endogenous opiates play a role in the central regulation of appetite (1, 2, 3, 4). Numerous studies have shown that The endogenous opioid peptides and morphine can initiate feeding under various conditions (5–12) whereas the opiate antagonist, naloxine can reduce food consumption (13–20). Recently, the endogenous opiod peptide, dynorphin, has been reported to enhance food intake (12–25).Much evidence has been accumulated indicating that a number of opiate receptors are present in the brain, each one having a high affinity for a specific endogenous opioid peptide (26, 27). Both the cyclazocine related compounds (28) and the feeding enhancer, dynorphin (29–32), have been reported to be specific kappa receptor agonists. In the present study, we report on the effect of the morphinan congener, butorphanol tartrate (33), on ingestive behaviour.  相似文献

We employed a novel method to exercise rats: making them rise to bipedal stance for feeding using raised cages. We studied its effects on the skeletons of 6 and 10-month-old intact or orchidectomized (ORX) rats. Body and hindlimb muscle weights, tibial BMC and periosteal cortical bone formation increased after housing in raised cages, but more so in 6-month-old animals than in 10-month-old ones. In 6-month-old orchidectomized rats, raised cages partially prevented ORX-induced bone loss by stimulating periosteal cortical bone (TX) formation and decreased bone resorption next to marrow. In 10-month-old male orchidectomized rats, raised cages also decreased the endosteal and trabecular bone resorption, but not enough to prevent completely ORX-induced net bone losses. Because the osteogenic effects of raised cages alone were only partial, we also studied the interaction between raised cage and prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) in 10-month-old retired female breeders. When treated with combined raised cage and PGE(2), both cortical (TX) and trabecular bone mass of the proximal tibial metaphysis and lumbar vertebral body increased over either raised cages or PGE(2) treatment alone, that was accompanied by dramatic increased bone formation at periosteal and endosteal surfaces. Thus making rats rise to erect bipedal stance for feeding helps to prevent bone loss after orchidectomy; it amplifies the anabolic effects of PGE(2), and it provides an inexpensive, non-invasive and reliable way to increase mechanical loading of certain bones of the rat skeleton.  相似文献

Beach-cast kelp (the most widely used feed for commercially grown South African abalone) is plentiful during winter months when periodic storms cause kelp to wash ashore. During summer, however, this resource is not always readily available and farmed abalone are often starved for short periods. The aim of this research was to assess how periodic kelp starvation influences growth of the commercially grown abalone, Haliotis midae Linnaeus. Growth of grow-out abalone was monitored on a commercial abalone farm over a period of six months and consisted of 3 treatments with 2 replicates (n = ±250 abalone per replicate). The treatments were: Control (abalone always given more kelp than what they typically needed); Treatment 1 (abalone fed their weekly ration only once a week); Treatment 2 (abalone fed half their weekly ration every 3 and then 4 days respectively). While the data at first suggest that the control animals outperform the treatment animals, after undergoing an initial adjustment period to the new feeding regime, the treatment animals perform better. Weight gain and feed conversion efficiencies show that the treatment animals perform better overall. The control animals generally required much more feed to produce comparable increases in both length and weight compared to the treatment animals. This study has shown that periodic bouts of starvation is beneficial to Haliotis midae, allowing variable growth spurts when returned to full feed rations. This paper has not been submitted elsewhere in identical or similar form.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary zinc deficiency and diet restriction on bone development in growing rats, and to determine whether any adverse effects could be reversed by dietary repletion. Weanling rats were fed either a zinc-deficient diet ad libitum (ZD; <1 mg zinc/kg) or nutritionally complete diet (30 mg zinc/kg) either ad libitum (CTL) or pair-fed to the intake of the ZD group (DR; diet-restricted) for 3 weeks (deficiency phase) and then all groups were fed the zinc-adequate diet ad libitum for 3, 7, or 23 days (repletion phase). Excised femurs were analyzed for bone mineral density (BMD) using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, and plasma was analyzed for markers of bone formation (osteocalcin) and resorption (Ratlaps). After the deficiency phase, ZD had lower body weight and reduced femur BMD, zinc, and phosphorus concentrations compared with DR; and these parameters were lower in DR compared with CTL. Femur calcium concentrations were unchanged among the groups. Reduced plasma osteocalcin in ZD and elevated plasma Ratlaps in DR suggested that zinc deficiency limits bone formation while diet restriction accelerates bone resorption activity. After 23 days of repletion, femur size, BMD, and zinc concentrations remained lower in ZD compared with DR and CTL. Body weight and femur phosphorus concentrations remained lower in both ZD and DR compared with CTL after repletion. There were no differences in plasma osteocalcin concentrations after the repletion phase, but the plasma Ratlaps concentrations remained elevated in DR compared with CTL. In summary, both ZD and DR lead to osteopenia during rapid growth, but the mechanisms appear to be due to reduced modeling in ZD and higher turnover in DR. Zinc deficiency was associated with a greater impairment in bone development than diet restriction, and both deficiencies limited bone recovery during repletion in growing rats.  相似文献

A purified hydrated gelatin diet was developed for feeding dietary fibers to Wistar rats. A dry fiber mix was prepared that consisted of 54.91 dextrose, 13.80 casein, 2.97 AIN mineral mix, 1.28 AIN vitamin mix, 0.17 dl-methionine, 6.80 lard and 5.10 gelatin (g/100g total dry feed). Either cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, or pectin (15 g/100 g total dry feed) was added to the hydrated dry fiber mix and blended until complete distribution and hydration of the fiber was achieved. After gelling, these hydrated diets were stable for up to 24 hours in environmental conditions commonly encountered in animal facilities. Gel weep was minimal thus permitting feed consumption to be monitored conveniently by weighing the residue in the feeders. In situ examination of stomach contents after feeding such hydrated diets to rats indicated that the gelatin gel was readily degraded and did not confound gel formation by fiber itself. Feed efficiency values (g gain/100 kcal digestible energy) for these diets following a 26-day feeding trial were as follows: no fiber, 6.21; cellulose, 6.38; hemicellulose, 6.23; lignin, 6.52; and pectin, 5.53.  相似文献

The fundamental approach to the biological control of Aedes albopictus requires the mass rearing of mosquitoes and the release of highly competitive adults in the field. As the fitness of adults is highly dependent on the development of immatures, we aimed to identify the minimum feeding regime required to produce viable and competitive adults by evaluating three response parameters: development duration, immature mortality, and adult wing length. Our study suggests at least 0.60 mg/larva/day of larval diet composed of dog food, dried beef liver, yeast, and milk powder in a weight ratio of 2:1:1:1 is required to maximize adult fitness. With standardized protocols in mass rearing, intensive studies can be readily conducted on mosquito colonies to facilitate comparisons across laboratories. This study also evaluated the differences in response of laboratory and field strains under different feeding regimes. We found that strain alone did not exert substantial effects on all response parameters. However, the field strain exhibited significantly lower immature mortality than the laboratory strain under the minimum feeding regime. Females and males of the laboratory strain had longer wing lengths under nutritional constraint due to the higher mortality that resulted in reduced interactions with the remaining larvae. Meanwhile, the field strain exhibited heterogeneous duration of immature development compared with the laboratory strain. The disparities demonstrated by the two strains in this study suggest the effect of inbreeding surfaced after a long term of laboratory colonization. Despite the trade‐offs resulting from laboratory colonization, the competitiveness of the laboratory strain of Ae. albopictus is comparable to the field strain, provided the larvae are fed optimally.  相似文献

The satiety effect of intraperitoneal injections of the synthetic tetradecapeptide bombesin (BBS) was examined in rats equipped with chronic gastric cannulas. BBS produced potent, dose-related suppressions of both sham feeding (on days when gastric cannulas were open) and feeding (on days when gastric cannulas were closed). BBS not only suppressed sham feeding, but also elicited the behavioral sequence characteristic of normal satiety. The results demonstrate the potency of BBS in eliciting behavioral satiety under conditions in which gastric, intestinal and postabsorptive mechanisms are minimally activated by ingested food. These findings are consistent with previous reports suggesting a role for BBS in satiety.  相似文献

Diazepam will induce feeding in rats. This feeding has a rather stable latency and does not wane with repeated doses. Naloxone hydrochloride, in doses as small as 0.25 mg/kg, subcutaneously, inhibited the feeding induced by diazepam, 25 mg/kg, intragastrically.  相似文献
