The document herewith deals with the geography, geology, and climate of the Mexican territory as the basis to further explain the development of Limnology as a science in this country. An early knowledge started with the Aztecs, with evidence of practical solutions for a life within a lake. After the conquest of the American territories by the Spaniards, the exploration of the new territories provided the main source of information relative to natural resources. In 1938, the Mexican government established the Estación Limnológica de Pátzcuaro and the pioneer studies appeared under the name of Spanish scientists not only here but also at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and the Instituto Politécnico Nacional. During the 1970s, the participation of Mexican limnologists began and the attempt to build-up a conceptual framework in its own for lakes, reservoirs, and rivers. This article outlines the main limnological characteristics of Mexican water bodies, highlights the peculiarities of a transitional zone between the tropics and subtropics, and describes the government structure for management and administration. A fast development in this area of knowledge got underway with the creation of the Asociación Mexicana de Limnología in 1997 and the collaboration with international counterparts.  相似文献

This study presents limnological and morphological characteristics, physical and chemical properties of waters, and geochemistry of surface sediments for 63 aquatic ecosystems located on the karst Yucatán Peninsula and surrounding areas of Belize and the Guatemalan highlands and eastern lowlands. Our principal goal was to classify the aquatic systems based on their water variables. A principal component analysis (PCA) of the surface water chemistry data showed that a large fraction of the variance (29%) in water chemistry is explained by conductivity and major ion concentrations. The broad conductivity range, from 168 to 55,300 μS cm−1 reflects saline water intrusion affecting coastal aquatic environments, and the steep NW–S precipitation gradient, from ~450 to >3,200 mm year−1. Coastal waterbodies Celestún and Laguna Rosada displayed the highest conductivities. Minimum surface water temperatures of 21.6°C were measured in highland lakes, and warmest temperatures, up to 31.7°C, were recorded in the lowland waterbodies. Most lakes showed thermal stratification during the sampling period, with the exception of some shallow (<10 m) systems. Lakes Chichancanab, Milagros, and Bacalar displayed sulfate-rich waters. Waters of sinkholes had relatively high conductivities (<3,670 μS cm−1) and a broad range of δ18O values (−4.1 to +3.8‰). Ca, HCO3, and SO4 dominated the waters of the lowland lakes, whereas Na was the dominant cation in highland lakes. Coastal aquatic ecosystems were dominated by Na and Cl. Cluster analysis based on surface water variables classified aquatic environments of the lowlands and highlands into three groups: (1) lowland lakes, ponds, wetlands, and coastal waterbodies (2) highland lakes, and (3) sinkholes and rivers. A broad trophic state gradient was recorded, ranging from the eutrophic Lake Amatitlán and the Timul sinkhole to oligotrophic Laguna Ayarza, with the highest water transparency (11.4 m). We used major and trace elements in surface sediments to assess pollution of waterbodies. Lakes Amatitlán, Atescatempa, El Rosario, Cayucón, Chacan-Lara, La Misteriosa, rivers Subín and Río Dulce, the wetland Jamolún, and the sinkhole Petén de Monos showed evidence of pollution and urban development. Their surface sediments displayed high concentrations of As, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Se, Zn, and Zr, which suggest moderate to strong pollution.  相似文献

Antarctica is an extreme continent composed of cold environments but also of several geothermal sites, among them is Deception Island, an active stratovolcano located in the South Shetland archipelago. From this island, few microbiological studies have been performed, and the presence of archaea has not been reported. In order to investigate the archaeal diversity in hydrothermalism from Deception Island, different submarine samples were taken from the flooded caldera. Samples were analyzed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of the 16S rRNA gene in conjunction with culture-dependent methods at hyperthermophilic temperatures. Analysis from DGGE band sequencing showed the presence of archaea belonging to the hyperthermophilic genus Thermococcus and different uncultured archaea closely related to environmental clones from hydrothermal vents. Archaea from the psychrotolerant genus Methanococcoides were also detected. Additionally, we have successfully isolated an anaerobic hyperthermophilic archaeon closely related to Thermococcus celericrescens. Cells were irregular cocci with a diameter between 0.6 and 2 μm and grew at 50–90 °C and at a NaCl concentration of 1–5 %. Here, we present, based on culture-dependent and culture-independent approaches, the first report on archaea from marine hydrothermal sites of Antarctica.  相似文献

Biodiversity patterns in cladoceran communities were investigated in urban waterbodies in relation with residential land use, pond management, and waterbody environments. We evaluated species richness in the pelagic and littoral zones of eighteen waterbodies of a large Canadian city. Gamma diversity (26 species) observed at a small scale in the urban survey was important comparatively to large-scale surveys of lakes. Beta diversity ranged from 1 to 8 species among waterbodies. We tested if littoral species greatly contributed to regional diversity in urban waterbodies. Littoral species (Chydoridae, Ilyocryptidae, Macrothricidae, Polyphemidae) accounted for 58% of the total species pool. We distinguished five cladoceran assemblages associated to different waterbodies (temporary ponds, permanent lakes, and wetlands). Cladoceran communities were more diverse and variable in permanent lakes than in temporary ponds. Changes in cladoceran species assemblages among waterbodies were driven by variations in waterbody size and phosphorus enrichment, macrophyte and algal biomass, urban density, pond management practices, and the presence of potential predators as fish and macroinvertebrates. Our study indicates that both artificial ponds and lakes and natural wetlands are valuable habitats for the conservation of cladoceran biodiversity and rare endemic species in urban regions. Further research on pond management strategies promoting urban aquatic biodiversity should be undertaken.  相似文献

We surveyed the diversity of cultivable fungi isolated from cold and hot volcanic soils of Deception Island, Antarctica. Seventy-four fungal isolates were identified; these belonged to 17 taxa in the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, Pseudogymnoascus, Purpureocillium, and Mortierella. The fungal assemblages showed low diversity, richness, and dominance indices. The Aspergillus taxa were dominant in the soils at 0 °C, 50 °C, and 100 °C. Aspergillus lacticoffeatus, Aspergillus cf. ruber, Penicillium citrinun, and Purpureocillium sodanum were present only in soils having a temperature of 100 °C. Aspergillus calidoustus was present in all thermal soils and displayed the highest densities. The majority of fungi displayed mesophilic behavior; however, different isolates of Aspergillus lacticoffeatus and Aspergillus niger were able to grow at 50 °C; these are phylogenetically close to the causative agents of aspergillosis in immunocompromised individuals. Deception Island perhaps represents one of the most visited regions in Antarctica and the tourism there has increased over the last 20 years, especially by elderly tourists, probably with weak immune systems, come in contact with the resident microorganisms, including the thermo-resistant opportunistic Aspergillus species.

Summary Water samples from coastal lakes and ponds on Ross Island (77°S) and from the adjacent Ross Sea were analyzed to determine nutrient supply relative to the population size of planktonic algae and bacteria. An enrichment test was applied to each water to measure N and P accumulation by the seston as a guide to nutrient demand and deficiency. In all waters, including the sea, the dissolved inorganic N-to-P ratios were low, but inorganic nitrogen was generally present at concentrations that satisfied or exceeded the current growth requirements of the algae. None of the samples responded to added P, and only 3 of the 13 plankton assemblages tested responded positively to nitrogen enrichment. These waters are therefore characterized by an abundance of resources relative to demand. This apparently r-selecting coastal environment contrasts markedly in many ecosystem properties with the inland meromictic lakes of Antarctica.  相似文献

The geology and physiography, climate, soils and vegetation of the saline lakes region of southern Saskatchewan are briefly reviewed. The location and morphometry of 60 saline lakes was determined. Some of them are large (307 km2) but mean depths do not exceed 10 m and many are very shallow. Light penetration varied considerably from very turbid shallow lakes to Redberry Lake where the 1% light level was below 16.5 m. Light extinction coefficients for the entire water column of deeper lakes (7) varied from 0.256 to 2.558. Shallow lakes failed to stratify thermally but a dozen deeper lakes stratified for at least several months. Higher salinity tends to prolong stratification. Thermal stratification augmented chemical stratification in two meromictic lakes. Maximum temperature up to 30 °C in very saline shallow waters was recorded while temperatures as low as-3 °C occurred under the ice. Freezing was delayed and thawing accelerated in more saline lakes. Annual heat budgets varied from 3350 to 13,900 g cal cm-2 in seven lakes. Oxygen concentration was reduced below thermoclines and was virtually absent below the ice in very shallow lakes and, at times, in a very productive lake.  相似文献

Abstract. Investigations of the responses to acclimation of upper and lower lethal limits and limits to activity in insects have focused primarily on Drosophila. In the present study, Halmaeusa atriceps (Staphylinidae) is examined for thermal tolerance responses to acclimation, and seasonal acclimatization. In summer and winter, lower lethal temperatures of adults and larvae are approximately −7.6 ± 0.03 and −11.1 ± 0.06 °C, respectively. Supercooling points (SCPs) are more variable, with winter SCPs of −5.4 ± 0.4 °C in larvae and −6.3 ± 0.8 °C in adults. The species appears to be chill susceptible in summer and moderately freeze tolerant in winter, thus showing seasonal acclimatization. Similar changes cannot be induced solely by acclimation to low temperatures in the laboratory. Upper lethal temperatures show a weaker response to acclimation. There are also significant responses to acclimation of critical thermal limits. Critical thermal minima vary between −3.6 ± 0.2 and −0.6 ± 0.2 °C in larvae, and from −4.1 ± 0.1 to −0.8 ± 0.2 °C in adults. By contrast, critical thermal maxima vary much less within adults and larvae. These findings are in keeping with the general pattern found in insects, although this species differs in several respects from others found on Marion Island.  相似文献

Deception Island (62°57′S, 60°38′W) is one of the most frequently visited locations in Antarctica, prompting speculation that tourism may have a negative impact on the island’s breeding chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica). Discussions regarding appropriate management of Deception Island and its largest penguin colony at Baily Head have thus far operated in the absence of concrete information regarding the current size of the penguin population at Deception Island or long-term changes in abundance. In the first ever field census of individual penguin nests at Deception Island (December 2–14, 2011), we find 79,849 breeding pairs of chinstrap penguins, including 50,408 breeding pairs at Baily Head and 19,177 breeding pairs at Vapour Col. Our field census, combined with a simulation designed to capture uncertainty in an earlier population estimate by Shuford and Spear (Br Antarct Surv Bull 81:19–30, 1988), suggests a significant (>50?%) decline in the abundance of chinstraps breeding at Baily Head since 1986/1987. A comparative analysis of high-resolution satellite imagery for the 2002/2003 and the 2009/2010 seasons suggests a 39?% (95th percentile CI?=?6–71?%) decline (from 85,473?±?23,352 to 52,372?±?14,309 breeding pairs) over that 7-year period and provides independent confirmation of population decline in the abundance of breeding chinstrap penguins at Baily Head. The decline in chinstrap penguins at Baily Head is consistent with declines in this species throughout the region, including sites that receive little or no tourism; as a consequence of regional environmental changes that currently represent the dominant influence on penguin dynamics, we cannot ascribe any direct link between chinstrap declines and tourism from this study.  相似文献

The first studies of phytoplankton in inland waterbodies of Sakhalin Island by electron microscopy have revealed 19 representatives of the class Centrophyceae, including some that are new for the flora of the region (Aulacoseira subarctica, Coscinodiscopsis commutata, Stephanodiscus delicatus, S. makarovae, Thalassiosira baltica, and T. cf. hyalina). Species of centric diatoms that are new for these waterbodies have been documented in lakes Vavaiskiye and Tunaicha, and the species composition of Centrophyceae have been revised. The first complete data on the taxonomical spectrum of Centrophyceae in Lake Sladkoye, lakes of Mount Spamberg, and the Tym River have been obtained. A revision of the species composition of Centrophyceae in the waterbodies of Sakhalin Island has been made, and the list of the class has been broadened to 44 taxa from 17 genera.  相似文献

Epiphytic, epilithic, and surface sediment diatom assemblages were identified and enumerated from 35 study ponds on CapeHerschel (78°37″N, 74°42″W), east-central Ellesmere Island, Canada. All the sites are shallow (maximum depth <2 m), clear, oligotrophic, and freshwater. The ponds freeze completely for 10 months of the year. Major ion concentrations are relatively similar among the 35 sites, although environmental gradients exist. Over 130 diatom taxa from 28 genera were identified in the periphyton samples. Marked differences in species composition were evident among the ponds. Moreover, many of the diatoms exhibited varying degrees of microhabitat specificity. Variance partitioning by canonical correspondence analysis showed that 26% of the total variance exhibited by diatom species composition could be accounted for by the measured environmental variables (i.e. 10.2% by habitat and 15.8% by water chemistry). Pondwater alkalinity best explained the distribution of taxa, and weighted averaging regression and calibration were used to develop a transfer function to infer pondwater alkalinity from the diatom assemblages. Other important environmental variables included [Na+] for the epilithic and [SiO2] for the epiphytic assemblages.  相似文献

Cyanobacterial blooms are on the rise globally and are capable of adversely impacting human, animal, and ecosystem health. Blooms dominated by cyanobacteria species capable of toxin-production are commonly observed in eutrophic freshwater. The presence of cyanobacterial blooms in selected Ohio lakes, such as Lake Erie and Grand Lake St. Marys, has been well studied, but much less is known about the geographic distribution of these blooms across all of Ohio’s waterbodies. We examined the geographic distribution of cyanobacterial blooms in Ohio’s waterbodies from 2002 to 2011, using a nested semi-empirical algorithm and remotely sensed data from the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) onboard the European Space Agency’s Envisat. We identified: 62 lakes, reservoirs, and ponds; 7 rivers; 6 marshes and wetlands; and 3 quarries with detectable cyanobacteria pigment (phycocyanin) concentrations. Of the 78 waterbodies identified in our study, roughly half (54%; n = 42) have any reported in situ microcystins monitoring results from state monitoring programs. Further, 90% of the waterbodies identified reached phycocyanin pigment concentrations representative of levels potentially hazardous to public health. This gap in lakes potentially impacted by cyanobacterial blooms and those that are currently monitored presents an important area of concern for public health, as well as ecosystem health, where unknown human and animal exposures to cyanotoxins may occur in many of Ohio’s waterbodies. Our approach may be replicated in other regions around the globe with potential cyanobacterial bloom presence, in order to assess the intensity, geographic distribution, and temporal pattern of blooms in lakes not currently monitored for the presence of cyanobacterial blooms.  相似文献

The distribution of archaeal amoA and 16S rRNA genes was evaluated in two marine-derived, meromictic lakes in the Canadian High Arctic: Lake A and Lake C1 on the northern coast of Ellesmere Island. The amoA gene was recorded in both lakes, with highest copy numbers in the oxycline. Sequence analysis showed that amoA from the two lakes shared 94% similarity, indicating at least two phylogenetically distinct clusters. Clone libraries of archaeal 16S rRNA genes from Lake A revealed strong vertical differences in archaeal community diversity and composition down the water column. The oxic layer was dominated by one group of Euryarchaeota affiliated to the Lake Dagow Sediment (LDS) cluster. This group was absent from the oxycline, which had an extremely low archaeal diversity of two phylotypes. Both belonged to the Crenarchaeota Marine Group I (MGI), the marine group that has been linked to archaeal amoA ; however, there was a low ratio of amoA to MGI copy numbers, suggesting that many MGI Archaea did not carry the amoA gene. The anoxic zone contained representatives of the RC-V (Rice Cluster-V) and LDS clusters of Euryarchaeota. These results show the strong vertical differentiation of archaeal communities in polar meromictic lakes, and they suggest archaeal nitrification within the oxycline of these highly stratified waters.  相似文献

Arctic freshwater ecosystems are important habitats for northern wildlife. Arctic climate impact studies suggest that global change could result in major modifications and perturbations of lakes, ponds and wildlife. Most studies focus either on freshwater ecosystems or on animal populations, but few have investigated the links that exist between them. Animal populations have the potential to alter the nutrient inputs in lakes and ponds via faeces. The present study is the first to reveal the impact of an expanding Greater Snow Goose (Chen caerulescens atlantica) population on the limnology of arctic lakes and ponds. A survey of 27 freshwater ecosystems was performed on Bylot Island (Nunavut, Canada) in order to identify patterns in limnological conditions. Using a multivariate statistical approach, our study shows that the presence of birds in the catchment of lakes and ponds has an impact on their nutrient status. Concentrations of major ions that were related to the distance from the sea were the main environmental variable explaining the limnological differences observed among lakes and ponds. Nutrient variables that were mostly related to the presence of Snow Geese played a secondary but significant role. N and P concentrations were different among impacted and non‐impacted sites, underlining the impact of animal populations on northern freshwater ecosystems. (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The New Zealand distributions of three species of Boeckella (Copepoda, Calanoida), B. triarticulata, B. dilatata and B. hamata are mapped. B. triarticulata is primarily a pond dweller but is also found in reservoirs and shallow lakes. B. dilatata is mainly found in the deeper glacial lakes and ponds in the central region of the South Island and B. hamata has a more widespread distribution in lakes and ponds in the South Island and lower half of the North Island. Differences in temperature optima, food requirements and dispersal ability among the three Boeckella species are related to vicariant events to explain their distribution in New Zealand.  相似文献

Active volcanoes in Antarctica have remarkable temperature and geochemical gradients that could select for a wide variety of microbial adaptive mechanisms and metabolic pathways. Deception Island is a stratovolcano flooded by the sea, resulting in contrasting ecosystems such as permanent glaciers and active fumaroles, which creates steep gradients that have been shown to affect microbial diversity. In this study, we used shotgun metagenomics and metagenome-assembled genomes to explore the metabolic potentials and survival strategies of microbial communities along an extreme temperature gradient in fumarole and glacier sediments on Deception Island. We observed that communities from a 98 °C fumarole were significantly enriched in genes related to hyperthermophilic (e.g. reverse gyrase, GroEL/GroES and thermosome) and oxidative stress responses, as well as genes related to sulfate reduction, ammonification and carbon fixation. Communities from <80 °C fumaroles possessed more genes related osmotic, cold- and heat-shock responses, and diverse metabolic potentials, such as those related to sulfur oxidation and denitrification, while glacier communities showed abundant metabolic potentials mainly related to heterotrophy. Through the reconstruction of genomes, we were able to reveal the metabolic potentials and different survival strategies of underrepresented taxonomic groups, especially those related to Nanoarchaeota, Pyrodictiaceae and thermophilic ammonia-oxidizing archaeal lineages.  相似文献

The dietary composition of the antarctic fish Notothenia gibberifrons Lönnberg in a depth gradient was studied, from sea level until 200 meters in South Bay, Doumer Island, West Antarctic. The diet of this species varied across the depth gradient. Stomachs from specimens captured between the surface and 100 m. depth usually contained mobile benthic organisms, principally Amphipods. Those from below 150 m. had eaten almost sesile benthic organisms, principally Bivalvia species. Specimens sampled in the layer between the above-mentioned levels contained a mixture of items, some corresponding to the upper and others to the lower sections. Based on the presented evidence the feeding pattern of this species is discussed.This study was supported by the Instituto Antártico Chileno, and a grant IV-2-1 of the Universidad Austral de Chile.  相似文献

Aim We tested the hypothesis that construction of lakes and ponds has facilitated both inter‐ and intracontinental invasions of calanoid copepod species. Location North Island, New Zealand. Methods We sampled both natural and constructed lakes, ponds and reservoirs for calanoid copepods in the North Island, New Zealand. Species records were supplemented by examining historically collected samples and literature review. Distributions of non‐indigenous calanoid copepod species were compared between constructed and natural waters. Species distributions of native species were compared with the basement terranes (microplates) of the North Island to determine if they possess ‘natural ranges’, and to assess whether construction of new water bodies had altered these distributions. Results Ten calanoid copepod species have been recorded. At least four, and possibly five, of these species are non‐indigenous and were restricted to constructed water bodies. Occurrences in constructed water bodies were not restricted to dammed valleys, but also included ponds constructed on farms, ornamental ponds, disused quarries and retired mines. Four Boeckella species had distributions in natural waters closely related to the North Island basement terranes, and therefore possess ‘natural ranges’ on the island. One species, Boeckella propinqua, was found in natural lakes over a small geographical range only, but has spread with construction of new water bodies to now be widely distributed over the island. Main conclusions Construction of lakes and ponds has facilitated the invasion of calanoid copepod species at both inter‐ and intracontinental scales. Our findings suggest that resident native calanoid copepod species may reduce the risk of invasion to natural water bodies, as similar‐sized species are commonly unable to co‐occur. Spread of the non‐indigenous representatives from constructed into natural waters is inevitable, with established populations providing local propagule supplies for regular introductions.  相似文献
