The influence of weather and egg contamination on the dynamics of herbage contamination with infective larave of Cooperia oncophora was investigated on artificially contaminated grass plots and in a grazing experiment with 24 first-year grazing calves from May to October 1987 in Lower Saxony, Germany. On the experimental plots the larval translation was highest at the beginning of July and in the second part of September, following high mean weekly temperatures. Between July and September peak recovery of larvae from herbage occurred 4 weeks after contamination. A seasonal pattern of larval translation similar to that on the experimental plots could be demonstrated on the grazed pastures when the number of larvae per m2 of pasture had been adjusted to the previous egg output by means of a contamination index. The resulting 'relative larval density' is regarded as a good indicator for larval development on pasture. From July to September the larval population on pasture resulted mainly from the egg contamination 2-3 weeks earlier. The short persistence of the infective larvae on herbage was probably due to the frequent and heavy rainfall throughout the season, causing a passive washout of larvae into the soil. On single pastures the larval density started to increase within 1 week after the calves had first contact with these fields. The impact of the calves on the distribution of larvae is discussed.  相似文献

Between December and June, six paddocks that had been contaminated naturally with infective larvae of nematode parasites of cattle, were each subjected to one of six grazing treatments. The effects of these treatments on the infectivity of the pastures were assessed by slaughter and total worm counts of calves which subsequently grazed the paddocks, and by counts of larvae on pasture samples. Grazing by sheep during autumn resulted in reduced populations of Ostertagia ostertagi and Trichostrongylus axei, both in calves and on the pasture for up to 12 months after treatment. Similar effects were noted on pasture grazed by cattle repeatedly dosed with anthelmintics, and on ungrazed pasture. There was little effect of any treatment on numbers of Cooperia oncophora. It was concluded that the level of autumn contamination was of importance in determining the numbers of O. ostertagi in the following spring and summer.  相似文献

Gastrointestinal parasites, and egg and oocyst output in the faeces of captive white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus yucatanensis) were recorded in Yucatan, Mexico. Feces were obtained from from January through December 1995 (ten samples every two weeks per place). Samples were processed by flotation and the McMaster techniques. Faecal cultures for L3 larvae were made by the Corticelli-Lai technique. Oocysts in faeces were cultured in 2% potassium dicromate. Seven genera were determined (Haemonchus spp., Cooperia spp, Isospora spp., Eimeria spp., Trichuris spp., Strongyloides spp. and Moniezia spp.) which represent five orders. The most frequent genera were Haemonchus, Isospora and Eimeria. The genus Isospora is reported for the first time in deer of this region, although it was not possible to explain the source of this parasite. The frequency and level of faecal egg and oocyst outputs were variable during the year and increased during the rainy season. There was a positive correlation between relative humidity, environmental temperature and rainfall with the coccidia and strongylida orders. In the central zone of Yucatan the meteorological conditions during the rainy season are favourable for the development of gastrointestinal parasitism which enable an increased risk of infection for deer.  相似文献

Development of an in vitro culture system for infectious Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae made it possible to study the potential cross-transmission of D. viviparus between white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and cattle (Bos taurus). Between 26 September 1995-29 February 1996, six parasite-free bull calves were individually inoculated with 15 to 50 infective third stage larvae (L3)/kg of body weight cultured from adult D. viviparus collected from white-tailed deer. Three bull calves were simultaneously inoculated with 45 L3/kg of body weight recovered from cattle either by the Baermann technique or by in vitro culture as above. All three calves inoculated with the homologous cattle strain became patently infected while all six calves inoculated with the heterologous deer strain remained negative for the presence of D. viviparus in the feces and in the lungs upon necropsy.  相似文献

Extracts of adult Oesophagostomum radiatum were resolved into four fractions by gel filtration chromatography on a Superose 12 column. ELISA assays on these four fractions showed that the antibodies produced by naturally infected calves predominantly reacted with the void volume fraction (VV). Three trials were conducted in which calves were vaccinated with the VV fraction of adult extract. When compared to untreated controls, vaccination with the VV of adult extract significantly (P less than 0.05) reduced worm establishment and faecal egg output after challenge infection relative to untreated controls.  相似文献

The effects of low levels of both biting and sucking lice, a mixed population of nematodes, and a combination of all these parasites were evaluated in calves held in a barn with no environmental controls in central Texas. Observations at 122 sites on each animal for 16 wk consecutively in 1987 revealed that the largest numbers of all louse species [Haematopinus eurysternus (Nitzsch). Linognathus vituli (L.), and Bovicola bovis (L.)] occurred 3-7 wk after infestation. In 1988 L. vituli populations decreased rapidly after the 3rd wk and B. bovis remained fairly constant for 20 wk consecutively. Average nematode egg counts increased to approximately 300 eggs per gram of feces in 1987 and approximately 600 eggs per gram of feces in 1988. The nematodes Ostertagia ostertagia, Haemonchus placei, Oesophagostomum radiatum, Cooperia spp., and Trichostrongylus spp. were present at the end of the study in both years as determined by necropsy. No significant differences in erythrocyte count, mean cell volume, hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration, leukocyte counts, or serum albumin concentration were detected. However, significant increases in total serum protein concentration and serum globulin levels in calves harboring both groups of parasites were observed. Mean weight gain in calves infested with lice and nematodes was 11.4 and 10 kg less than that of uninfested controls during 16 wk in 1987 and 20 wk in 1988, respectively.  相似文献

A total of 3,235 Dermacentor variabilis (Say) specimens were collected from birds, mammals, and by dragging vegetation, and 2,683 D. albipictus (Packard) ticks were collected from deer from 1993 to 1996. Peak seasonal occurrence of adult D. variabilis was from May through July with a precipitous decrease in August. Nymphal D. variabilis populations peaked in June. Peak activity of larvae was bimodal, with one activity peak during late summer (September) and a second peak in winter or early spring. The raccoon, Procyon lotor (L.), was the principal host of adults followed by the Virginia opossum, Didelphis virginiana Kerr. Rodents and the eastern cottontail rabbit, Sylvilagus floridanus (J. A. Allen), were the primary hosts of nymphs. The marsh rice rat, Oryzomys palustris (Harlan), was the principal host of larvae followed by the pine vole, Microtus pinetorum (Le Conte), and white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus (Rafinesque). All stages of D. albipictus were found only on white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus (Zimmermann). Numbers of adult and nymphal D. albipictus peaked in November, whereas larvae peaked in September.  相似文献

Investigation of seasonal changes in the composition of nematode populations, principally Ostertagia oslertagi, was conducted over 3 years at three locations in Louisiana. This is the most commonly occurring parasite of cattle in the state. Naturally infected yearling cattle were killed monthly over extended periods and tracer calves were grazed for monthly intervals from late autumn to summer at two locations in 1978–1979. Major objectives were to determine seasonal incidence of common gastrointestinal nematodes and for O. ostertagi, in particular, the time period during which larval inhibition was prevalent, circumstances under which larvae were conditioned to inhibition, and the duration of inhibition. Small numbers of inhibited O. ostertagi were recovered between November and February. Large numbers were found initially in March and increased numbers in April and May. Both normally developing and inhibition prone larvae were acquired during late winter-early spring, with the proportion of the latter being more prevalent in April and May. Evidence from tracer calves indicated that few O. ostertagi larvae were acquired after early June. Large burdens of inhibited larvae persisted in yearling cattle through summer; numbers of developing larvae and adults were minimal. Maturation of inhibited larvae occurs from August to October and in one instance was associated with cases of clinical parasitism. Factors responsible for inhibition were not defined, but increasing temperatures of late winter-early spring, host resistance, and density-dependence of populations were considered. Other abomasal genera were most prevalent in spring while intestinal genera were most common during autumn through spring.  相似文献

Changes in the numbers of infective larvae available on pasture and the development of helminth infection in spring-born lambs were studied in an environment with a mild winter and where pastures are grazed throughout the year. Prior contamination of pastures in autumn and early winter was compared with egg deposition by lambing ewes as sources of infection. Larvae derived from eggs deposited by lambing ewes did not appear on pasture until 8 weeks after the beginning of lambing but were present in increasing numbers for the last 7 weeks before weaning at 11–15 weeks of age. Lambs exposed to prior contamination became infected earlier than those exposed only to ewe contamination, but lamb egg output made no contribution to larval numbers on pasture before weaning. Lamb growth rates to weaning did not differ between groups exposed either to prior contamination alone, to ewe egg output alone or to both, but all groups carried appreciable infections at weaning. After weaning, lambs remained on the same pastures, and those exposed to ewe contamination suffered severe trichostrongylosis 5 weeks after weaning. Lambs exposed only to over-wintered contamination also developed severe trichostrongylosis 9 weeks after weaning. The results are compared with those of similar recent studies in Britain and their implications for control of infection are discussed.  相似文献

Eight Swedish Red Breed cattle, about 2 months old, were experimentally infected with a Swedish isolate of Dictyocaulus viviparus (Dviv-Se) from cattle and D. capreolus from roe deer. The aims were to determine whether the roe deer lungworm is infective to cattle or if it can induce seroconversion in cattle against D. viviparus as measured with an ELISA. Four calves which were given 500 Dviv-Se infective larvae (L3) each by larval dosing for two successive days developed patent infection between days 23 and 25 post-inoculation (PI). Larval output varied among the calves and during the patent period. However, maximum recovery occurred between 28 and 56 days PI with peak shedding on day 37 PI. Shedding ceased at day 58 PI and adult worms were recovered from one calf at necropsy (day 67 PI). No immature worms were recovered from the lungs at necropsy. Seroconversion was detected on days 35-42 PI. One Dviv-Se infected calf became seronegative on day 67 PI whereas the other calves still remained seropositive during this period. Prepatency and patency periods of D. viviparus and serological findings in this study basically conform to previous studies. Each calf that was infected with 400 L3 of D. capreolus for two successive days, and about 800 L3 of the same species about 8 weeks later, did not develop to patency based on faecal and post-mortem examinations. Consequently, under the conditions of this study, D. capreolus was not infective to cattle. Two of the four calves that were infected with L3 from roe deer were challenged with L3 cultured from faeces of the Dviv-Se-infected calves. This infection did not develop to patency. Whether this was due to cross-protection as a result of the prior priming with L3 from roe deer is not clear. However, if it is so, it opens up the possibility of using D. capreolus L3 for preventing bovine dictyocauliasis.  相似文献

From February 1998 to January 1999, 106 red deer in the Autonomic Organism National Park "Quintos de Mora" (Toledo, central Spain) were evaluated to determine the prevalence and dynamics of infection with Hypoderma sp. by detection of subcutaneous larvae. Between six and 13 deer shot in selective hunting were examined monthly. Hypoderma sp. larvae were detected throughout the period except in June, July and August of 1998. Excluding the period during which no subcutaneous larvae were detected, the number of animals sampled was 80 (52 males and 28 females), belonging to three age classes: 12 calves (<1-yr-old), 19 yearlings (1-yr-old), and 49 adults (2- to 10-yr-old). All the third instar (L3) collected were identified as H. actaeon. Total prevalence during the period of larval detection was 61%. Prevalence in yearling and adult deer shot during the official hunting season was 89%. Monthly prevalence increased from September to January and decreased from February to May. In September and October, a small percentage of larvae were classified as first instar (L1). The rest of larvae collected between September and December were second instar (L2). Third instar (L3) predominated in January and February and was the only stage collected from March to May. Intensity ranged from 1 to 145 larvae. Intensities were >100 larvae in 6% of animals. Possible relationships of intensity or prevalence of infection with sex or age of the animals were evaluated. Significant differences in prevalence were observed among different host age classes. Prevalence was higher in yearlings (84%) than in adults (63%) and lowest in calves (17%).  相似文献

Pott J. M., Jones R. M. and Cornwell R. I. 1979. Observations on parasitic gastroenteritis and bronchitis in grazing calves: effect of low level feed incorporation of morantel in early season. International Journal for Parasitology9: 153–157. Twenty-four castrated Friesian calves were divided into two equal groups on a body weight basis and grazed separate halves of an infected pasture. One group was given 1.5 mg/kg per day morantel tartrate in the feed over a period extending from 2 weeks before turning out in early May to early July. The other group of calves received an equivalent amount of unmedicated food as controls. Pasture larval counts showed a similar pattern and level of infection from February to July on both pastures. This consisted of a fall from moderate winter levels to very low levels in April/July. The control pasture then showed a typical sharp rise in August to high levels extending through September and falling to moderate levels in October. The pasture being grazed by treated calves showed only a small rise in larval counts in August. The total pasture contamination was reduced by 85% compared with controls during August/October. Faecal egg and larval counts showed similar differences between treated and control calves. Mild clinical signs of parasitic gastroenteritis and bronchitis were seen in controls but not in the treated group. The latter had a weight gain advantage of 20.5 kg the difference becoming marked in the last month of the trial.  相似文献

Intestinal blood loss in calves infected with various numbers of Oesophagostomum radiatum was measured using 51Cr-labeled erythrocytes, and compared with the subsequent changes in the packed cell volume of jugular blood. Emergence of histotropic fourth-stage larvae from the submucosal cysts was associated with intestinal hemorrhage in all infected calves but only in the calves given a near lethal dose of larvae was the bleeding sufficient to cause anemia. At the lower infection rates the hemorrhage caused by larvae was considerably less than that produced by the ensuing adult population. The proportion of adult worms recovered from the infecting dose diminished as the dose increased.  相似文献

The effects of immunization of sheep with Trichostrongylus colubriformis larvae on worm burdens acquired during grazing. International Journal for Parasitology 19: 177-181. Romney sheep, reared helminth-free in pens to 5 months of age, were immunized against Trichostrongylus colubriformis by giving two doses of 200,000 T. colubriformis infective larvae at 15 day intervals to assess protection from natural challenge during grazing. Five immunized sheep and five unimmunized sheep were grazed on infested pasture for 4 weeks, and were then returned to the pens for 4 weeks before slaughter. Worm burdens, gastrointestinal histology and mucus antiparasite activity were examined at slaughter. Faecal egg counts and haematological examinations were carried out at regular intervals throughout the trial. Significant protection (P less than 0.05) was afforded immunized sheep against adult T. colubriformis (87%), T. axei (67%), Nematodirus spathiger (91%) and Ostertagia spp. (42%). Greater numbers of immature Nematodirus spp. and Ostertagia spp. were present in immunized sheep Overall, a significant (P less than 0.05) 42% reduction in total nematode burdens was afforded by immunization of the sheep with T. colubriformis larvae. Immunized sheep had significantly (P less than 0.05) more globule leukocytes, mast cells and eosinophils in gastrointestinal tissue and significantly (P less than 0.05) higher levels of mucous antiparasite activity than unimmunized sheep. Haematological observations showed some sheep had transient eosinophilia during immunization or grazing. Both immunized and unimmunized sheep showed depressed (P less than 0.05) total leukocyte counts during grazing which returned to pre-grazing levels within 1 week of return of the sheep to the pens. Overall, haematological parameters reflected parasite challenge and were unrelated to worm burdens acquired.  相似文献

A survey of helminth infection was conducted in a flock of 290 ewes distributed into Romanov (R), Merinos d'Arles (M) and Romanov x Merinos (R x M) genetic types, grazing irrigated pasture in the south of France. Faecal egg and larval counts were done seven times per year from 1981 to 1984 on homogeneous groups of ewes and then individually once to four times every autumn from 1985 to 1988. Helminth fauna was diverse and more abundant during autumn. High levels of strongyle infection occurred in the ewes that remained on the same irrigated pastures during summer. Moving to Alpian pastures during the summer lowered autumnal infection. Significant differences between genotypes in intensity of infection were observed in the order R > R x M > M for strongyles (Teladorsagia circumcincta and/or Trichostrongylus vitrinus, Chabertia ovina and/or Oesophagostomum venulosum, Nematodirus spp.), Moniezia spp. and Dictyocaulus filaria. The hierarchy was reversed for Fasciola hepatica infection and not consistent from one year to another for protostrongylid infections. The effect of lactation intensity on the postparturient rise was studied by equilibrating number of ewes according to reproductive status (zero, one or two lambs in lactation). Merino ewes with two lambs in lactation, as well as primiparous Romanov ewes, had significantly higher strongyle infections than the others. The repeatabilities of the larval and egg counts between the four trial years were 0.24, 0.23 and 0.16, respectively, for protostrongyles, Nematodirus and strongyles, with higher intra-annual values for protostrongyles and inconsistently significant results for strongyles due to the presence of several species.  相似文献

Development, migration and survival of infective larvae (L3) were studied in the Western Pampeana Region. Faeces of naturally nematode infected cattle were deposited as artificial pats on plots during mid-spring-summer of 1994/1995 and 1995/1996. Since the start and during 1995, the study coincided with a severe drought, rainfalls being 29% below the 45-year means. The predominant genera recovered were Cooperia, Ostertagia and Haemonchus. Initial and peak recovery of L3 from pats occurred 8-15 and 15-21 days later respectively. A low percentage of L3 survived from November (0.3% L3) and January (0.06% L3) to the following autumn and winter. The mean persistence of larvae detected in pats or herbage was around 200 days from deposition. The migration of L3 from faecal pats to herbage started 15 to 30 days after deposition according to rainfall occurrence. Maximum herbage recoveries of L3 from pats deposited in late summer occur during autumn rainfalls. Only, few L3 were occasionally recovered from soil. Summer conditions were associated with rapid development and translation of L3 to herbage, but also with low L3 detection after initial recoveries. Faecal pats deposited from mid-summer were the main source of autumn herbage contamination.  相似文献

The removal, by anthelmintic treatment, of adult worms from calves that had been infected daily for 204 days with larvae of Ostertagia ostertagi, stimulated the resumed development of inhibited early fourth stage larvae. The calves remained susceptible to the establishment of worms and the continued administration of infective larvae after the 204th day reduced the rate at chich the burden of inhibited forms decreased. The relevance of these findings to the regulation of worm burdens is discussed.  相似文献

Eighty-six adult female white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus (Zimmermann), collected over a 12-mo period in the Texas Edwards Plateau, harbored six species of nematodes (Haemonchus contortus, Gongylonema pulchrum, Oesophagostomum venulosum, Ostertagia ostertagi, Cooperia sp., and Apteragia odocoilei), and two cestodes (Moniezia sp. and Taenia hydatigena). The patterns of distribution of the three common species of gastrointestinal helminths (H. contortus, O. venulosum, and G. pulchrum) were overdispersed. When analyzed for the main and interactive effects of the extrinsic and intrinsic variables of season and physical condition, respectively, aggregated abundances in H. contortus and O. venulosum appeared to result from the main effect of seasonal changes operating over the collective populations of these two species rather than from the intrinsic factor of physical condition operating within selected subpopulations. Abomasal parasite counts do not appear to be a useful index for monitoring herd condition of white-tailed deer from this geographic region.  相似文献

The peri-parturient period is crucial for controlling worms as the acquired immunity of ewes is disrupted, resulting in an increase in faecal worm egg counts. Two hypotheses were tested in this experiment - that ewes bred for worm resistance would have lower faecal worm egg counts than unselected control ewes, during late pregnancy and lactation, under similar but separate grazing areas; and also that numbers of infective nematode larvae would be lower on pastures grazed by resistant ewes than pastures grazed by unselected control ewes. Faecal samples were collected from resistant and unselected ewes in late pregnancy and early lactation, during the winter rainfall season, and analysed for numbers of Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Teladorsagia circumcincta. Pasture samples were taken 1 week before and 7 weeks after lambing started and analysed for infective larvae. In all sheep, worm egg counts rose 2 weeks prior to lambing and continued into lactation. Worm egg counts were significantly lower in the resistant ewes from 1 week before lambing to 2 weeks after lambing. There were no differences in egg counts between single- and twin-bearing ewes in the resistant line. However, twin-bearing control ewes had significantly higher egg counts than single-bearing control ewes. Following lactation, plots grazed by resistant ewes had substantially less contamination with T. colubriformis larvae, but there were no differences in numbers of T. circumcincta larvae. Our results demonstrate that sheep bred for worm resistance has lower worm burdens during the peri-parturient phase and that lambs born to resistant ewes face a lower larval challenge during their introduction to grazing. In our environment, selection for low worm egg counts has produced sheep highly resistant to T. colubriformis, but has had less impact on resistance towards T. circumcincta.  相似文献

Four- to 6-mo-old calves raised on clean pastures were allowed to graze for about 30 days on pastures naturally contaminated with Ostertagia ostertagi, Cooperia spp., Haemonchus placei, and Nematodirus helvetianus. The calves were then housed on concrete for 3 wk before slaughter. At necropsy the eggs per gram of feces (EPG) and the total worm burdens from the abomasum and small intestine were determined. Blood samples were also obtained for serum pepsinogen (PEP) assays. A total of 44 calves was sampled over 27 mo. Adult worm totals were distributed more normally after logarithmic transformation (LOGTOTAL), and EPG and PEP were distributed more normally after square root transformation (SQRT--EPG; SQRT--PEP). Correlation between LOGTOTAL and either SQRT--EPG or SQRT--PEP was about 0.7. These correlations were higher than those obtained with nontransformed data, suggesting that either EPG or PEP are easily measured variables that explain a significant amount of the variation observed in total worm burdens. Polynomial regression models of a cubic order using the SQRT--EPG accounted for 78% of the variation observed in the LOGTOTAL, whereas SQRT--PEP accounted for 58% of the variance. Within the range of worm burdens observed, these results indicate that EPG has value in estimating total worm burdens of naturally infected calves, and that pepsinogen levels are of less value for analysis of total worm burden in calves with a limited previous exposure to trichostrongyle nematodes.  相似文献
